Who Decides Which Sports Are in the Olympics?

"So the delayed twenty twenty tokyo olympics happened the other week complete with thirty three sports and three hundred thirty nine events including four new sports and to discontinued sports. Brought back from the dead. That's the funny thing about the olympic games. The games themselves change almost every time in terms of new events. You might have seen the karate skateboarding sport climbing or serving you might have. I didn't what i saw. The olympics was mostly clips on my favorite memes site. The resurrected sports were baseball and softball. Last seen at the two thousand eight beijing olympics the international olympic committee had decided to make a commitment to the youth by bringing sports to them in urban environments. A pretty new point of view for the i. O. c. as well as to increase engagement for youth fans who are passionate about different sports from all over the world or dispassionate about sports as a whole these sports are also not coincidentally quite popular in japan so who decides what stays in. What goes that would be the aforementioned international olympic committee they oversee all aspects of the olympic. Games they run in it in the common parlance of the associations. Ninety nine members many are former athletes or current leaders in athletics from all over the world bonus fact one of the founders of buffalo wild wings was a lifelong figure skater who served on the ioc for a time. The ios's executive board proposes which sports will be included and the rest of the votes on them. A sport must cut certain muster to sway. Those voters there are five factors split into a further thirty five criteria. Such as. How long has the sport existed. How popular is the sport in the host country. How much would it cost to hold and broadcast the event and how much value the sport would be to the olympic legacy.

Japan Ekes Out Economic Growth in Recovery From Pandemic

"To japan. Now where the economy rebounded faster than expected from its pandemic driven slump. The pickup in the second quarter was largely due to preparation for the tokyo olympics. Figures out today show. The economy grew at twice the rate forecast. From april. To june as the bbc's will bain reports. It may not be all smooth sailing for the world's third largest economy the good news. Preliminary data showed japan's gdp grew by zero point three percent quarter-on-quarter reversing zero point nine percent drop in the first three months of the year. The less good news well when your economy minister declares they have very mixed feelings over the figures you know. There may still be trouble ahead. Yes toshi. Nishimura pointed to a recent spike in delta varian cases around the tokyo olympics plus the slowing economic recovery of its larger neighbour china as reasons to be cautious. Our priority is to prevent the spread of the virus is very bad for the economy for this situation to drag on. He said how successful japan is too. That ends looks likely to be the key to what the next three months of economic output look like. I'm the bbc's will bain

The Tokyo Olympic Games Come to an End

"More than two weeks of competition in thirty three sports across forty six disciplines in forty three venues for a total of three hundred thirty nine medal events. The tokyo olympics formerly came to an end on sunday with the closing ceremony. We'll joining me now. Is monaco tokyo bureau. Chief of funeral. Wilson you're not as we know. These games were delayed for year because of the pandemic when they did finally go ahead. It was in the face of a great deal of opposition from the japanese people. How do they feel now hydrogen. Well that's very question. I think you know the early polls saying that slight majority of people were okay with with the government going ahead with the games. But i wouldn't say that was a lot of enthusiasm over for the games are very pleased with the way japan did for good. Tv viewing figures. Appreciate good. but i think just going out and about in tokyo you sat and you felt like the city was slightly disconnected from the event. It was almost like the event was happening. Somewhere else People around tokyo couldn't go and see the event you weren't seeing athletes around the city so bit of a mixed picture Thrilled with the the tally of goals for japan. Which is the highest ever. But i don't know there's a slight feeling that You know. I felt like once it started. People just thought they were bit resigned. You did still see some protesters outside the stadium last night but i think the really hard opposition was worn away by the time the the event came around

Tokyo Olympics Conclude, Marking End of Strangest Games on Record

"Flame has been extinguished, signaling the end of Tokyo 2020, an event delayed one year by the global pandemic. NBC's Jim Ryan was covering the game from the empty stadiums to the quarantines to the masks on every face. Coronavirus was as much a player at the games of the 32nd Olympiad as any gymnast, swimmer or skateboarder. Given the rising covid numbers, many Japanese remained sceptical about the wisdom of hosting the Olympics outside the closing ceremony. In fact, public protests raged on, but for better or worse, the games were held over the course of 16 days, records fell, winning streaks were broken or extended. And athletes from countries as big as China and as small as Turkmenistan became Olympians. Jim Ryan, ABC NEWS Tokyo The next

"Not really. I haven't really been now much marvel. Shit it'd be honest with you and then I've been watching bad batch with a little bit. I guess but batches batches like white noise. I throw it on whenever i'm bored shows. Okay i guess. I'm not a is is the trailer seasonably in dexter really hits. It's stride like is that like windex. Kinda that's best because i think it's really awesome right now. This is particularly. I not gonna. I don't want to like give any like quality. It gets bad at some point. I'll just say you'll know when it's bad. It's good enjoy when his good would you'll know when it's bad potato for blue. What a few tests for someone wanting to try and get into a fantasy but is scared to getting without friends to play with. It's a very social game so if you don't guess go on this go bomb. I don't think. I don't think you should worry too much about the first thing you should do is enjoy just like going through the main story. Like if you're it's daunting or anything don't worry about doing anything else. Just play the main story. Play like you're playing like a normal fancy game story. The game is real social. Though so i would highly recommend you play with someone else at least because i don't know it's just like any social coop game like you're there's always going to be a little sense of and have anyone to play with you know so i feel like this guy be like discords or cheese or something like that like bill into the game. Almost there's tons of jeez but like having a friend definitely makes it easier. So i don't know and maybe maybe maybe we'll start playing it and you'll find friends in the game you know who knows Chupak as what is the best time of day in. Why is it the best. I like like evening. Like sunset like seven to eight. 'cause more often than not. I'm like okay. My days done like now i get to just literally sit here and do nothing like i just finally Here and just sit so yeah. Probably that attorney nighttime gang Just always nighttime gang. Mr barry will tell you. Mr fruit will tell you the morning. Yeah he's a morning guy loves mornings. I've i've gotten appreciation for the mornings But like it still sucks waking up. Like i'm never just like wow okay. Yeah let's just hop out of bed and skippy do like. That's a great another day. It's like i. I guess i'll go stream today. I want to wait for this question. for mr fruit to get back. But i'll go for it and we'll try and dissect it as he comes back as us questions for the podcast. Let's say you have a lamp on and it's a two minute two what you've heard this before. No it's going to be a long question do this but let's do this. Okay if you turn the lamp on wait one minute then turn it off. Then wait thirty seconds then turn it back on then wait fifteen seconds then turn it back on then wade seven point five seconds then turn it back on and so on and so forth when the two minute timer is finished with a lampy on or off. This question is called a super task. This question is called. Bullshit is what i don't like this and i'm going. What am i supposed to figure out. Okay so we weigh one minute to turn off so at one minute its off. I wait thirty second so at one thirty. It's off okay. Right so one thirty. It's on okay. So one thirty s on and then one fifth forty five okay here is. Hey we need you. We need you hotdogs. I pay attention. This question is specifically like for you. Not really but you know what i mean. Ask questions for the podcast. Let's say you have a lamp and a two minute timer came. If you turn the lamp on then wait one minute. Then turn it off then wait thirty seconds then turn it back on then wait fifteen seconds then turn it back off then wait seven point five seconds then turn it back on and so on and so forth when the two minute timer is finished with a lampy on or off this question. It's called super task. Was what does it mean super task. I don't know just kind of question. Is i guess john. Copy paste it okay. 'cause i'm way more visual a put it in subscriber chen okay. Boom turn the lamp on the land is on at a minute right off. I turned off at a minute. So it's off at a minute and then it's on at one thirty right and then at one forty five. It's off and then at one fifty two point one fifty two point five. It's on okay. So what's half of one. What's half of seven point. Five three point or three point five so now three point seven okay so three three point seven five plus one was one fifty four one fifty two point. Five is one fifty five so at one fifty five. It's back off so now what's half of three point. Five.

Now they played a game in the qualifiers for the For these olympics and again not having watched a single kick all i can do is look at scoreboard. They lost badly three. Nothing to switzerland or sweden or somebody. I don't care whoever they are. I cheered for them because they were beating up on people who hate my country even though they were wearing the colors that represent my country. You see. I believe in the mathematical equation of a negative. Negative is a positive if a negative anti-american Like meghan were. Pinot is speaking ill of my country. I am going to be negative towards her and root for her opponent. And that makes me a proponent of my country. Because i don't want anti americans representing america so mega on the soccer team. "Fun to have a great race like that. So both katie. J. litherland raced to silver in the four hundred individual medley and 'em away and did the same on the women's side. Y'all look so good with those medals on both. Can we start with you pay. You got it hanging around your neck. I like how it looks. How did it feel in that moment to watch to you and your team to win gold like i've been telling people just like an unforgettable moment Lot of emotions Just a really really awesome experience especially to see like you know a raised a lot of those guys in college and they're my competitors for really long time and now they're going to be my. They were my teammates. Just awesome brooks part of the team. To help them qualify. You're going to get your metal tomorrow. What did it feel like to be watching and cheering. I mean were you nervous. We excited I knew these guys had in the they could bring it home. It was super awesome to be able to be there in person and watch it and watch these guys gig old. There were so many cool things that happened. But i had to say after you guys had won gold. Caleb took his gold medal and he looked up he looked for you in the stands. He tossed it underhand to you. When you caught. It was an awesome. What did describe what that was about for people who didn't quite get So they got their mental during the During the podium. So i get mine Some time and he wanted me to experience that with them at the same time and so he toss it up so i could hold it and where and it was. It was awesome. I gotta ask you about the final touch on the rate on the relay newest tight i think our analysts. It was just five hundreds of a second. Did you watch it back. A little concern thought. Oh well you know i. I wasn't too worried We train for for this. You know we've done plenty of exchanges. I told sack you know through training camp and like dude. I always finish long. It'll be ready for that. So zach knows what he's doing and he's he's on it a man that was by the way we were there screaming for you. I don't know if you've heard us. But we will possibly could jay congratulations. Usa one two. You have family. That was freaking out because you were like workshop to did you know how close to getting that silver when you were in the pool. Get to see people on the way back a for this race. I was just seeing the crowd or like the stand so i just felt the energy. Usa stands were going crazy. So i just with the well. I mean the gold went to your teammate chase. Kalia who's also your teammate. At georgia and your training partner and your buddy i mean what does that mean to you Meat so much So actually like two years ago. We made a bit To get the olympic tattooing. So i didn't get it in sixteen But he was saying if we go one two in tokyo after. Get it so. It looks like you're going to learn. You should go to the tattoo parlor to congratulate years old first olympics. You've got that you got that hardware draped around your neck would mean to you when you wind. I mean this whole experience has been so like this kind of stuff. You jayme of when you're a little kid in the sport to actually have a become a reality kind of insane to me And you know like being there without looking up and seeing our teammates and the stands meant the world. I think that energy and watching jay chase before us really got going for the race. Were real quick. I know you guys miss your folks at home when you're on the today show you want to get quick. I'm on everybody that he did. It did it. They're so proud of you back at home. I don't know if you can feel it. But everyone in the united states is tyranny. You guys on congratulations proud. Thanks guys all right. We'll send it to you all right. Thanks ladies so for more on the of these games for more than usa and what to keep an eye on in the days ahead. We're joined by our pal might tweak. Oh nbc olympics time owes always good to say circuit to be here in in the morning the evening here. So we've seen some swimming. We've seen some gymnastics softball. We've seen some skateboarding now. Forty eight hours in compared to other countries compared to team. usa's pass. How are we well. That first night usually see the us win and swimming and it didn't happen but the us ended up with a pretty good hall at the end of that first full session. And i think that starts some of the momentum. The united states actually has won more medals shooting gold three than they have in swimming too. But swimming's won eight medals and that's really where the lion share comes from and you saw some of the folks over there for the eight who've won medals the decky dresser will be key to this and katie winning silver and caleb in the goal of the four by one hundred sets a good tone for the rest of the team as they go through the rest of the week. Hone in on your talking. Please welcome in. I haven't seen enough of each other to go. He's taught gymnastics. That's a big focus. A lot of people are wondering there was a little bit of a stumble Nobody's infallible but do you think that they're going to be able to bounce back. You would think they can because you know the individuals involved. We've seen them all do better. So is it a little bit of the pressure is a little bit of a reality check. It's once you can't play defense and the russian team was really good. So the americans they have to be sharp ho to the best news for simone and everybody else it all wipes away. All resets was qualifying. Those scores carryover so clean mind. Positive thoughts gives them the great chance to have a great couple of days. I'm levin these gold medal games that are about to experience the the women's softball. There's here's one thing about not being able to leave the hotel. I'm watching so much ladies. Their incredible and they're going to have a huge game with japan. Every game has been tight and the game against japan that they played this. Walk off homer to win the game. Let's them be the home team in the gold medal match here.

"And you'd want to buy fisher so we can both agree that that that's a winner. I'm looking at the notes that have been sent over and i'm guessing That you've written him jimmy. Because this is a very jamie wards phrase says worst and it says canada and just next to it says truly awful. So i'm going to click through to the link. I'm seeing a lot of denim. I'm seeing graffiti. I'm already feeling uncomfortable. What's going on with canada's uniform. Yes those those were my words unfortunately your this is quite a good following from the skateboarding. Point because that one's showed is what happens when you try to be young and cool and you get it right. That's what we've seen with the skateboarding uniforms. What we're seeing is when you try to be kind of young and cool and edgy and you get it wrong. These uniforms have had a lot of press. I'm sure a lot of painful of saying them and which they had but they basically done a play on the canadian tuxedo with. We see kind of famous for like denim jackets. There's nothing wrong with a denim jacket. Nothing wrong with some double denim. It's more just how they've decorated jockettes. So they've there's like graffiti on the back in read. That says like tokyo in canada but the lead is kind of mixed about it just a lot of graphics printed all over the place. It's quite punkish quite aggressive. Which seems to be odd for the olympics. i think they also just look naff. They look like someone much older has done. What they think kids are wearing. These days has just kind of missed it. that were designed by hudson's bay huge canadian retailer. And yeah i just think it's tried to be youthful and cool and edgy. And that just aren't they've also got on one of the other outfits they've got like a bum bag slung across the show so i think they've really tried to think about what young people wearing at the moment. But where designed to like halos that because he's defining what young people are wearing these. Unfortunately the canadian designers haven't so yeah. I do feel sorry for those athletes. No the gone so badly wrong here and you know you can just imagine these poor athletes. They've worked whole lives probably from being kids to get to this olympic games and you know the games a bit of a disaster with covert and then they have to wear these ridiculous outfits. I'm very worst of all the bad denim jacket. This is not good so maybe let's just wrap up on a positive. There's a few others that you've you've said on your best list not your worse list. You've got china and france on there. Which would you like to talk about. I think we can kind of took them together. Actually because i think what they do is that kind of simple and understated the design. So i think if you have a really agenda-setting designer lack attell far or like you know the nike cleberation. You can do something really cool and fun. But i think a lot of the time. There's nothing wrong with a really simple classic uniform. The french designed you know they've just done like block colors. Red widened blurt. France has good colors. they work well. They've got these kind of polo shirts. That look a little bit. Is that the slaves a quite long down to the elbow that sort of blocked off in navy reds navy trousers. They look like the nice ikat that just sort of seem understated. Flattering very french and the chinese designs. That by the oscar-nominated costume director team yip who was nominated crouching tiger hidden dragon and he's designs a predominantly white with the reds kind of trim. It looks like is some kind of traditional fastening to the jackets on again. They look slake quite understated. And i think part. The french and chinese designs safe effective and fluttering safe effective unflattering. That's olympic design. Should really be all about. But it's amazing to to chat to you jamie and i think you know we've kind of gone across the board if you're rooting for country which is which apparently has bad colors. You told me earlier that we're going to block that one out. Who do you think is going to looking the best at the olympics liberia. I can't wait to say the liberian team. i would. Of course like you know both you at i can be looking out for the ozzy's and i think that uniforms a bad. I don't think that the i mentioned before that grain goats. It's fine but it's just like a lot. It's a law so not my favorite color combo. That's not assurance vote. I'll be looking out for ozzy's but my is also looking to liberia. Because i think that will definitely be best on the truck that was jamie waters. They're running through some of the best and worst uniforms. You're going to see at this year's games and that's all the time we have on today's show if you're keen for even more designed related listening than catch a five minute. Midweek's is to show multiple on design. Extra it as every thursday. Today's show was produced and edited by mainly evans. Thanks to a research nick. Minnie's and charlie film a court. "Talk about being privy to the design. I'm working with the design is what was your involvement on oil your relationship with the design team. Yeah so i wasn't a part of the cooling technology. But i had a meeting with the design team after rio. And they're just asking what were some of my favorite pieces. What did i see a lot of the other athletes wearing. Was there anything that i saw. Athletes didn't like perhaps. What are we want. more of what's going to be more beneficial for us. And so i got to kind of give a little bit of feedback on my thoughts on the rio stuff and they said thanks and i talked to one of designers last week in new york and she said she used some of the thoughts and ideas when they're designing the suffer tokyo so it's cool to be part of that and learn a little bit about behind the scenes because there is a lot that goes into it so as a fun experience so i. I guess i'm curious. What sort of insight did you give them was it. Was it just about the fact that you're having to stand in the hate for a long time like six hours. Those opening and closing ceremonies or was this something more to it with some of the village. Whereas we'll talk about how figuring out if like a way to customize it to where it's like it's still team usa but it has a little bit of flare wherever it is you're competing and that way. It's it's team usa shirt for tokyo. And obviously you're going to want some neutral stuff that kind of fit across any games but one of the things they did for tokyo. There's some shirts. Sat usa but then it says tokyo in japanese right so it's a little bit of that flair to kind of be able to say. This is a tokyo shirt and.

"Today's show in japan home to this year's olympic games and i'm joined down the line by our asia bureau chief in tokyo. Fiona wilson fiona. We are trying to be as positive as possible in terms of telling the olympic story. Because we're looking at it through the lens of design but maybe just before we kick off you. You have to be a little bit honest with what's happening in tokyo. At the moment honestly is pretty bad news the olympics. It seems blood from one bad story to another. It's quite hard to find any good news. I was absolutely startled the other day to be walking through yogi park. Which is where. I want my dog and see the most enormous hot-air balloon it was in the shape of a head don by an art collector and it was part of the cultural olympiad which i didn't really know about and then this thing kind of it didn't really take off. They had instant on road but he was absolutely spectacular. But i think some people felt disembodied head was maybe not the best symbol of the olympics at the moment. So we're looking for some good news but that to me was the most exciting thing scifo. Let's look at the positive. Let's look at some of the design elements because every olympic games always has such a strong synergy with design. They they really try and tie to up together all the way through to the little picture grounds that they use to show the events to the stadium design big and small so what are the highlights from tokyo. One of the things. I liked just mentioned them. It's the pictograms. And i think what's really interesting about. The turkish ground is the sporting pictograms started in tokyo. Nineteen sixty four olympics on dot sixty four weeks just such a huge influence on a whole generation of designers. One of whom was jackie here. Amora who was commissioned to do a sets a tokyo twenty twenty and i went to see him so interesting talking to him i think he said he's you know he felt the pressure. Because it's just such an important but if designed to tom and not to be nostalgic not back but to create a new standard for these pictograms and they really are dynamic. It's quite different if you put them side by side the nine hundred sixty four set with a new set. There is quite big difference. One of which is the main call. He's used as this emblem blue they call it. Which is this sort of indigo blue. That we're seeing a lot of. It's one of the official colors of the olympics and of course for him as much harder there any twenty sports back in nine hundred sixty four. This time he had to design seventy-three pictograms so it was a much bigger project and he had a whole team of designers. He said he did eleven design proposals before they hit the one that worked and yeah it took forever to go through photos really capturing the essence of each spore. He said he looked to thousands of photographs to find. the shops. really encapsulated the sports and the other thing this year is the first time ever doing animated pictograms. That wasn't done by him. That was quoted iguchi but this really dynamic of pictogram. They're actually moving and they all quite spectacular. It's funny how such a small thing make such a big difference. Because you got to see these. Old over the games now obviously. They were really hoping the spectators would enjoy them designed for the tickets. The sign age all over the stadium so unfortunately not many people will say them. But you know it's really worth having a look at them even if you're doing on a small screen we all watched the the euro's and many people in the uk disappointed but you could see all these little quirky additions like this. I think there was like remote control. Cars bring the ball onto the pitch. I imagine that things are going to be a little bit more classy and well done in tokyo. And one of these elements is the podiums fearing it. Can you take us through the design. I understand these recycled pieces. Yeah well you know. I think interestingly some ways some of the elements that this olympics. It's actually about the way things made more than almost than the end result podiums of very simple classic looking podium to. What's interesting is made from marine plastic ways. Which has become a big subject here and people just donate tons of old plastic and all the podiums recycled. And that's been a big element of this olympics. Talking about sustainability and sometimes people slot turned off by but here when they ask people for example metals a made from recycled phones and home electric's they also people to donate their old phones and bits and pieces from around the house and they had more than they needed to do as so many people were so excited about is i think he's also reminder of how three years ago people with real to have olympics is slightly different pension today but these medals all in themselves sustainability as it turns out it looks like the athletes will now be presenting themselves with medals. They will be putting the metals around their necks. But i had the the sustainable angle okay. Let's finally try and a few plusses from this. I've spent a bit of time in tokyo and it. But i haven't been there for a while but talking to architects there in the past the idea about thinking really truly about sustainability and trying to kind of enforce it into a lot of their work didn't seem to be so pronounced maybe not so much with the general public either. Do you think all of these efforts around sustainability and the games have raised it up a level. Do you think that this is really kind of a good moment. For these types of ideas around circular design and sustainable design in japan right now. Sustainability is a big discussion. Here i think whether you know the olympics ebi truly sustainable is a completely different subject because obviously if you think about just the The amount of people flying in and that's not sustainable and a lot of people feel it's really just lip service to i think in terms of the buildings the has been some really interesting movement on that you know the aquatics venue huge amounts solar energy being used. The is really state of the all the way they're lowering flows moving wolf and it can change the size and depth the pool. That's quite interesting. I think one of the big things is the you know. There are forty three venues in this olympics. In only eight of them on new. So i think that's something to look at really brand new structures. That will stay there. The restaurant temporary and also does a load of venues from nineteen sixty four olympics which you know just deserves a designed book of its own in fact i think he probably has about ten already. But you know the architecture. I'm not olympics. Was phenomenal and i think that's sustainability. Isn't it longevity using things for a long time don't demolish what can we use again and i think some of these structures from the sixty four olympics. A science fantastic that. It's a shame not to see them against. You've got the budak hand. Which is amazing outs hole. Which is also very famous. Concer venue yoyogi national gymnasium. Which you just talk rain from monaco office which is really really one of the best. Modern buildings he suddenly in japan. It's fantastic building by kenza time. Gay that's going to be used again in this olympics saying these buildings live again. They've tried to do a bit of a heritage zone. Sinkhole it these buildings from the sixties with the new buildings like the ariake gymnastics sent. Which i did gun meet the structural engineer for that. And that's an amazing story. That's modern building in a way that you really can get your teeth into united. They spent so long making this incredible wooden structure. And it's just a shame that spectators won't be able to enjoy it but that building initially was going to be possibly just a temporary venue but now being turned into a convention center helpfully after the olympics people will get to see. Its go just a mess. Spectacular wooden roof that architects realized it was almost impossible to build until they burrow on this very very experienced structural engineer. And he worked out how to do it and he'd actually catch tanguy sixty four buildings so he was really the best person for the job so if you take time to look at the architecture it's fantastic and i think longevity is becoming really big conversation in japan you've got all these architects buildings have been around forever and you've got the craftsmen. Who know how to make these things law. So i think japan is well placed for that particular discussion. My thanks to our asia. Bureau chief.

All i said was i respect my people enough to nightstand or acknowledge something that disrespects them. I love my people period. That was american hammer. Thrower gwen berry talking about the backlash she faced for turning your back to the us flag on the podium at an olympic trial last month now some house. Republicans have asked the us olympic committee to remind athletes not to use the world stage to make what they call quote. Divisive hateful anti american statements. If you know your history you know the full song of the national anthem. The pair graphs speaks. The slaves in america are blooming slang and pilfered all over. The floor is disrespectful and it does not speak for black. Americans is argues. There's no there's no question. Gwen berry was protesting in the us. In tokyo olympic athletes will not be able to do what she did. The international olympic committee has updated a longstanding rule which banned protests and political statements. During the games olympians. Ken protest in interviews or social media even before a competition. But certainly not on the podium under threat of fines. I'm joined now by three canadian. Olympians one corn miller is eat mohawk water polo player who competed in the sydney games. Angela white is a hurdler who competed in athens. Rio and beijing and mark tewksbury has one gold silver and bronze and swimming and competed in the barcelona and seoul olympics. He's also the vp of the board for the canadian olympic committee. Good morning to you. All good morning when he when he clemmie start with you and we heard from bury their that was one thing for her to make her gesture to turn her back but then came the backlash what. What did you make of that being. An athlete doesn't make you a non-political being doesn't make you sensitive noor actually victim to racism and communal experience of your people. It's what drives a lot of us to succeed. We want to prove the world wrong. We wanna make our our statement. We wanna you know we want to show the world how strong we are but it doesn't insulate us from the impacts of what is happening on a daily basis to Indigenous people black people people of color the lgbtq community. Everybody and so this backlash to be expected is also i think it's it's an unrealistic expectation to think that these athletes are not going to after an entire lifetime of struggle and putting everything they have their passion so much work into achieving basically the top of their field to not want to raise awareness about who they are and that feeling of needing justice and to find justice and user platform is extremely strong and it is expected in many ways of people from the those communities from the indigenous community. But even she has expressed her opposition to the tokyo olympics. What are some of the other big voices. we've been critiquing. Japan's senior medical advisor in the past said that this is not a normal situation to be holding. The olympics expressing doubt the ceo of really big japanese retailer called it a suicide mission. And i do think for japanese athletes. They have felt torn about it. Is there have been public pressure for them to speak out against it and some of them don't feel comfortable because they've put a lot of sweat and tears into it. You know there have been some concerns that they've received messages from social media at asking them to speak out against the olympics. The international olympic committee president has said in interviews that there are sacrifices quote unquote that would have to be made and that has really not gone over well with japanese public. They have their olympic stars. There are some heroes of the olympics that the japanese would definitely be rooting for. But it's a matter of who bears. "Urban areas tripled between nine hundred ninety nine and two thousand nineteen with that increase in deaths in farm country. There's also a race. Gap blacks have the highest mortality rates per capita but that's been halved in the past twenty years although other news is good after hyder voyage is a physician and associate director at the veterans affairs. Boston healthcare system head researcher on this. Study dr the study was pre pandemic. We'll get to what impact might be. But why is this happening in rural areas. The reason wide the gap between urban and rural areas has essentially tripled over. Two decades is because of many different reasons. The reason that i think many might be familiar with. It is perhaps the opioid epidemic. We've also seen this. We saw this in some of our previous work is that chronic conditions of the heart and lung even conditions such as dementia death rates from these conditions are really have been skyrocketing in a rural areas. So it's a combination of both. That's from what have been called diseases of despair such as drug overdoses suicide and alcohol but also chronic conditions of heart lung that are responsible for This gap tripling at the same time. What we're seeing. Is that the access of rural americans. Do not just heiko healthcare but any healthcare has been eroding. I mean you say diseases of despair. They lead to the deaths of despair substance abuse or suicide. We've talked before here about how life expectancy has actually dropped among some rural americans. Many white men. Why are they having more. Chronic disease heart disease lung disease liver disease reason why chronic diseases on the rise in rural america is because many of the conditions that are risk factors for these diseases are are much higher in rural america than they are in urban areas. The nutrition overall is poorer enroll america than urban areas. The amount of exercise people get is lower. Smoking rates are much higher. Diabetes rates are much higher the debts or as the tip of the iceberg. What you're really seeing is is that the other duration of health in rural america. Sure you live in a city. You might walk for miles every day but we understand. You started looking to this when you were working in. North carolina and spital on the verge of bankruptcy that fits into this to hospitals closing in rural areas. Talk about that. I work in a rural hospital in ashburn north carolina. This was the only hospital for about one hundred fifty thousand people. And when i was there i realized that this hospital was in fact on the verge of bankruptcy and in fact since then it declared bankruptcy last year the more i dug into the story the more i realize that really. It wasn't just a one off event hospitals around the country. Rural hospitals around the country were either declaring bankruptcy closing or on the verge of doing so talk about the racial component. Black seem to make great health progress. A having their gap with white americans again per capita when it comes to mortality wise that overall if you look at the gap between blessing non hispanic whites and black americans that gap has have over the twenty years between nineteen ninety. Nine two thousand nine hundred however black americans still have the highest rates of debt amongst essentially all racial and ethnic groups and rule. Black-americans are the one group the highest rate of debt amongst all of the groups that we looked at this is before the pandemic. I'm thinking of people of color who worked and died on the front lines. How do you think factoring in the pandemic years is going to either alter or magnify. What's happened here robin. I am very worried about the impact of the pandemic on rural america. We know that a lot of racial and ethnic minorities living in rural areas have ended up working in fields such as meat packing plants et that. Were hit disproportionately the pandemic and now. What we're seeing is that rural america is lagging behind the rest of the country in vaccination rates. And what i also worry about. Is that the economic recovery that we might see in large. Urban areas is going to even further outpaced that of rural areas who post delegate findings at here now dot org. It's quite disturbing hydrofluoric. Lead researcher on the widening gap of deaths tripling in rural areas compared to urban areas. Got voracious thank you. Thank you robin okay. So maybe your state has lifted pandemic restrictions. And you're itching to hosted get together have a few folks over so many of us are feeling the desire to get social again. But we're not quite sure how to do it. And what to serve that keeps everyone safe because after all we are still in a pandemic well for more on this we have with us here. Now chef resident chef. Kathy guns with some suggestions. Hey kathy higher tanya so you did a little research on your own. You asked folks on facebook about their feelings on entertaining. And what did they tell you. Well there were certain themes that emerged. One friend wrote that she had a super party to celebrate a year and a half of missed holidays. They had grabbed blocks for new year's and lot for hanukkah and lamb chops for greek easter. And how it was all about love and food and connecting which seems to be a theme other people wrote that they're just keeping things simpler having fewer people over people who might normally have ten or twelve people over now on only having to people and finding that they're enjoying it more that there's more satisfaction and better conversations. Other people acknowledged that their only entertaining doors and that means they don't have to clean their house. A win win. Yeah that's a win win no matter what but what are some things you suggest for folks who are thinking about. Maybe all of those scenarios. Well you know. I think the idea i. I'm always up for keeping things simple and keeping them fresh and it's summer so being outdoors is the obvious choice. I have three recipes that all can be done ahead of time and are really seasonal. The first is actually a drink. A watermelon cherry lime and meant agua fresca which is means freshwater and agua friscos really popular fruit based drink throughout mexico. This is so refreshing you just throw chunks of seedless watermelon with pitted cherries which are in season with lime juice and meant. You barely need sugar at all. And it's an instant drink and for the adults if you wanted. You could throw a little tequila or rum in there but literally a five minute recipe also done. Yeah right on his he loss. It is so easy. They're right and you have such gorgeous fruit in california. A lot of other people wrote to me and said you know my kids are not vaccinated. So i still feel hesitant to have people indoors. So that's perfect outdoor recipe for kids and adults. Yeah it feels special. There was a little bit of effort. Put into it. But it's simple. You also have a noodle dish for us i do. This is a play on colt sesame noodles you make a sauce with fresh ginger me so pays peanut butter rice wine vinegar and at the last minute.
