"With three options, 59% said. Cancel 59%. This is a Yoma you're a poll conducted over the weekend. Now new poll shows support for Prime Minister Go She hit Asuka! Slipping to its lowest since he took off as J and and finding 40% support Now, which is down about 4.4%. This, by the way, as a Tokyo Olympic Committee is holding test events to try and see how things would play out if, in fact there are games Sidney extending covert restrictions for another week, India's capital is extended its locked down for another week and adopted stricter restrictions. While saying the U. S may have turned the corner on the covert fight, Dr Anthony Fauci, commenting on new research indicates the U. S total U. UK reporting Just two virus deaths A zoo of yesterday says more than a third of the population has been vaccinated in San Francisco. I'm Ed Baxter, this is a Bloomberg All right, Brian Juliet. Thanks very much the time here 10 minutes before the top of the hour. Let's get to Garfield Reynolds. Bloomberg M Live Asia Markets Team leader and take a look at some of the action today. So we've had the Wall Street session on Friday and then a little bit of performance here today, Garfield. I guess playing off the weak jobs report number of things happening for you What's chief among them? Why, you mean the chief thing that seems to be happening is that as far as the risk on mood and equities are concerned, is mostly weak jobs means you don't have to worry about C P I causing a disturbance when a prince the highest inflation in the decade that's coming tomorrow. I believe in the U. S session, and you also get a boost to Biden's infrastructure programs, his capacity to push through extra spending and you get the Fed's staying lower for longer, so Trade is looking at that and saying they have all the usual elements to drive equities higher in the equity space. Also, of course, were saying some figure strong performances from materials companies has iron a war explodes in China said the HP, for example, is at a record high. So if we're looking for ways to play it, we've got a lot there. You've got long equities. You've got the dollar weaker. I assume the end as a haven currency to would we can hear the dollar and then might weekend Currency, like the the Aussie dollar might strengthen pretty sharply. Any chance that you could see a repeat for the Ozzy like we saw what happened from 2009 to 2011 win it. It spiked. Well, you mean the one thing that's restrained ideology Now that was not then is that you've got the Reserve Bank of Australia firmly committed to holding rates down for the foreseeable future. Back in 92,011 p R B. A was Quite determinedly ahead of the curve. They were still fighting the inflation battles, which is it turned out where all the past on at the moment you've gotten Harvey A. That is very firmly in the camp off. We're gonna wait for actual inflation, too. Sustainably exceed our target before we act, so rates are going to stay down. I do think the although he is likely to jump above 80 cents sometime the next month or so, if I am always going to stay even anywhere close to where it is now, and the general commodities complex is going to keep rising, But it does have the RV acting as a brake rather than as A strong push down the accelerator, which was what was happening back in a period you mentioned. All right, Garfield. There's so much to talk about, but we've got a truncated session here, so we'll save it for the next time. Many thanks for joining us here live on the program. Garfield Reynolds there Bloomberg M Live Asian markets Team leader Juliet Alright, let's stay in today and join Angus sweetly now to talk more about Star entertainment, offering to merge with its casino rival Crown Resorts, and this sets up a bidding war with a rival suitor. Blackstone. Angus Whitley is Bloomberg's global business reporter and is in Sydney for us. So a proposed $12 billion casino merger here, Angus Tell us the details of the proposal and what it means for shareholders. Morning, Judy as you say, a bidding war for for crying resorts now, with its offer from the star stars, essentially offering a nail premium all stock merger with cran that would create a new Australian gambling and hospitality giant, really with gaming resort largely across Australia, and it plans Tonto cut costs in marketing in corporate office on it plans to sell and He's back a large chunk of export property portfolio as well on it says if you incorporate all that the value that's hidden in this proposal that the violence offered implies $14 a share for Crown resorts, and that's obviously where above Blackstone offer, but you have to competing bids. Blackstone's offering $12.35 in cash for for crying child is to take right now stars offering a long term bet on Australian gambling industry and you know what they're doing is really circling Crown and its lowest ebb. Crying, of course, was found in February to be unfit to run it. Sydney Casino in the one it just built and yet opened on its not facing similar probes in Perth on in Melbourne, its flagship casinos so that they Macon catch crime while it's cornered by regulator investigations across its portfolio. What does it mean? In terms of the approval from James Packer? Who wants 37% of Crown? I guess this is going to be critical here. Yeah, he's rolling. His status is critical here. Packard, of course, has failed at least twice to exit crown in recent years on and stars proposal for him and a new path for do you like Because it's an All Star proposal. James Packer instead of vaccine completely could retain a stake in the in large group. Now there is a cash component to Starr's offer. But that's not enough to cover Packers entire state. So you know, pack it will have a lot away here doesn't Want to stay in in the corporate life. He stepped back because of mental health concerns in recent years, you step back from all this post so he he could take the cash from from Blackstone, or he could feasibly remain in the game if he stays with Starr's offer. You mentioned with Starr's offer. There could be some cost benefits here and and saving on things like marketing, perhaps joining loyalty programs as well. Have we heard much from what analysts are saying as to whether or not this could be a better offer? Well, stars being being very detail about how much he could cut it Z estimating between 150 million in $200 million every year, which they say could amount to about $2 billion in market value on do they Laid out a very detailed presentation this morning sitting exactly where they're getting these. The savings from chunk of them. Biggest chunk is from corporate another functions in head office, but they're also overlaps. If you look at Crown and Sydney in loyalty programs across the two gambling groups, procurement, operations and marketing, and that kind of that kind of thing, it's not clear yet whether analysts of picked a winner from these two Eating bids, but both shares up mark sharply and Sydney stars up 8% now on Graham was up 6% a moment ago. Yes. Oh, Crown. I think training at its highest level since November. 2019 R. Angus. Thank you so much for bringing us up to date on this Star Entertainment offering to.

"32 Year old missed his last start with the right lab issue on Dan Sportsmen that your Bloomberg World Sports Update Markets headlines and breaking news 24 hours a day at Bloomberg, calm the Bloomberg business at hand and Bloomberg Quick tape. He's a Bloomberg business Flash. Let's begin in Australia. We have shares in Crown resorts up by more than 4.5% right now. This after Star Entertainment offered to merge with Crown, the Australian casino rival. Now Starr is proposing a mill premium share exchange. The ratio would be 2.65 are 2.68 star shares for each crown share. This offer is now set up a bidding war with crowns. Other suitor Blackstone Group. If you look at the overall market in Australia ASX 200 ahead by a half of 1%. In Tokyo. The Nikkei higher by 8/10 of 1% and in Seoul, The Cosby Up just 6/10 of 1%. So we had this huge mess in US nonfarm payrolls data. On Friday that created quite a bit of dollar weakness. The Bloomberg dollars spot Index was down Friday by 7/10 of 1%. And the dollar remains a little on the back foot here with the Bloomberg Dollars spot down about 1/10 of 1% yields actually are pushing higher in the Tokyo session with the 10 year Treasury building 1.5. 9% gasoline futures trading up the active contract ahead by about 1.7% right now, this after we had a massive disruption to distribution, the nation's largest fuel pipeline here in the states shot operations because of a cyber attack. On Daybreak Asia right now in Update on Global News, Baxter covering it all from the Bloomberg 9 16 years room in San Francisco, Eddie All right, Thank you. Douglas. This is a Tokyo Olympic Committee is holding test events to try and see how things would play out if in fact there are games, Sidney is extending covert restrictions for another week. India's capital, is extended this lockdown for another week and adopted stricter restrictions. Well, saying the U. S may have turned the corner on covert fight. Dr. Anthony Fauci, commenting on new research indicates the total U. S death toll could be as high as 900,000. Singapore now testing thousands of people as unlinked virus cases are persisting, their UK reported Just two virus deaths yesterday said more than a third of the population has been vaccinated. And China maintaining the pieces of the long March five Be rocket landed in the Indian Ocean in San Francisco. I'm Ed Baxter, This is Bloomberg. Bry and sir. Well, 20 minutes here past the hour. I'm Brian Curtis, along with Juliet. Solly. Juliet? Yeah, thanks for him. Let's get back to Van Pal, Chief, a pack strategist of BlackRock Investment Institute on the line for us from Singapore and talk a little bit more about your strategy for markets in Asia. We were talking about CPR daughter coming through in the US. We've also got China and India to report inflation daughter this week and We're seeing quickening growth in the region. But of course, there's also the big concern as it was talking about in the news that the virus is far from Daniel Thoughts on APEC markets and what you like What you don't like. That's right. So I think the dollar back topples is important with said. I think it's gonna continue to air on the side of doing too much to support growth. That's obviously quite a positive factor for risk and in particular for Fraser and and waffles. So with that being said in the detail against the winos are we are overweight Asia expand equities on fixed income in the equities. Suppose. Unfortunately, the virus Just remaining with us, but tiny getting boss and there certainly is also sauce and substance does. It does seem that the administration Preference, I suppose, with China on then the electoral winds of two million that Taiwan, of course, continuing to benefit from being directed at the right side of this chip shortage. I'm younger for prevents basements and talking, considering Yes. So the chip shortages definitely been a big theme in markets. Chinese equities have underperformed since February. What's the main cause there? Do you think? I think a couple of things regulation plant down, I suppose on some of the tech names. Obviously, she's waiting in the Chinese equity index of the idea of the clamp down on on some of those takes him off. So I think, understandably gave the market pause for thought. On a similar but different sort that the PBOC that the monetary authority could make something of a policy the steak and indulge in too much tightening. First now with the Black Bloc Investment Institute. Both of those important off course, but with is fine with the sell off that we've seen in Chinese equities. They seem much better discounted. Now than they were just a couple months ago. On from here. We actually think the outlets the Chinese equities, given the growth recovery that we expect to see on the relatively stable backdrop. We think it's quite encouraging China Equity's from here. Where are you saying yields move in this environment, particularly as you've mentioned yourself the 10 year up about 66 basis points this year as we continue to look towards what we might see from the Fed talking about potential changes to their policy, But also, I guess just this overall story of the global growth recovery being a little bit more patchy. You know, I think this is a critical question. So for us that the big move discounting the sharp economic recovery that we call the activity restart has happened. So from here on the strategic correlation, we think yields Congileo higher over time. In the shorts and the big movie is done, and we expect to see this kind of stable concepts that for yields on for the dollar to continue, which clearly is quite an encouraging backdrop. For level risk a nature amongst them. I'm curious. You know, this job's report leads to the idea that perhaps yields will stay. We'll stay down here for a while, and that's part of what we've seen s O in terms of equities. Would you think that a lot of houses might move back into some of the Long duration tech stocks that they had shunned over the past many months. I think the race it is. It is a key question and well, there is nuance. Of course, there is something there is some truth to the plane that a lot of markets are rates. Trade in disguise. So it's true that it's true that so years they're going to be stable from here than some of those longer duration asset classes, of which tech equities would be. Significant component. A significant feature of the I guess then. Yes, if it's true that yields going to continue to be stable from here, some of those duration names which have sold officer A few reasons, but amongst them the fact that you'll have your fire. If that Nell done, then we think that there.

"In all stop deal that potentially values the bidding $14 for ground share. And Starr also included a cash alternative. That would be a 12 50 a share for as much as 25% of crowns. Issued shares right so numbers for you. China futures up 3/10 of a percent. Hong Kong futures up about a half of 1% Nikkei futures suggest maybe a 2/10 of 1% gain at the open, and that is a look at markets off San Francisco. Let's get a news update with that, Baxter. Ed. Yeah, Brian just up in the past Well, half our new Tokyo Olympics fall down by Yomi Yuri. Shows overwhelmingly support for canceling the games altogether. There were three options. But 59% of the responses came back saying Cancel this is Tokyo Olympic Committee is holding test events to try and see how things would play out if in fact there are games, Sidney is extending covert restrictions for another week, India's capital, extending its locked down for another week and adopted Stricter restrictions while saying the U. Singapore is now testing thousands of people is on linked virus cases are persisting. UK reported just two virus deaths yesterday. Saying more than a third of the population has been vaccinated in San Francisco. I'm Ed Baxter, This is bloomer. Right, Paul? All right. Thanks very much. It's I guess for the half hour is, Sean wrote, she's Asia Pacific chief economist. That s and P global ratings and Sean we've been discussing India that's turn our attention to the rest of the Asia Pacific. More broadly, and specifically China. What do your expectations for growth and the outlook there? We see growth this year 8%, which is a bit lower than most people in the market, I think, and we'd agree with the recent Politburo statement that came out and said that the recovery so far Is unbalanced on its not yet on a solid foundation in China's recovery has been built on three engines, infrastructure of the property market and exports, and I think the government is worried that Each of those is not sustainable, and we'd agree. I think consumers have to come to the fore. And that's taking a little bit longer than many people thought in China for a variety of reasons. Consumption is not picking up, but we think it's going to take a little bit of time. So Roast is gonna be good to share. The recovery's going to continue, but it's going to be a little bit slower than many people think. So What is the policy prescription in a situation like that? Do you do adjust? Let's say what's happening on the monetary side. Given the the PBOC has been trying to take out some of the liquidity from the system do they need to reconsider that as as a tactic Yeah, I don't think they have much room too tight in monetary policy, for sure given where the economy is, but at the same time, there's not much room to ease either because I think they're still very worried about debt levels, particularly in local governments and in the property sector on those two areas that have been driving growth. So I think really, the focus should be on fiscal policy and trying to get help to households who are still struggling to a large extent and certainly in some areas of the country, But I think that's going to be hard. China doesn't really have the physical framework set up to do that easily. So really, I think policymakers are willing to be quite Home quite quite patient this year. Just simply wait for the growth to come through. You mentioned there might be some concerns about the level of debt building up dizzy simp E have concerned about the level of debt building up in these persistent fiscal deficits. Because, of course you're first it was the GFC. Now there's the pandemic, which is even worse. Well, certainly, you know that debt GDP ratio is over all the economy gonna rise about 20% points from the four covert and that that is a concern, but I think what we are is encouraged by The ongoing focus by the government on de leveraging and de risking the financial system. More broadly, in fact, much of the policies that we've seen over the last 6 to 9 months have been directly focused on trying to rotate those vulnerabilities. Cadet school of everywhere in the world. But China is at the moment pretty focused on making sure these things don't get out of hand and we think that's quite encouraging. Well, you talked about the three pillars on which the Chinese economy is based. Exports being one of them. Where is the currency right now? As strong as it is here, it's 6 41 67. Is that unnecessarily? Headwind in any way. It is, certainly I mean, the currency is still important for China. Even though it's a big, large domestic economy these days. It is very important for largest exports, but investment in the manufacturing sector and that was pretty weak. You to the trade war before we went into covert. It may well pick up now given all the demand was seeing for semiconductors, an electron IX, but I think the currency remains quite important. I think the government will be keen not to see too much Maura appreciation but in some senses a little bit out of their hands, and they're gonna have to wait and see what happens with US Dollar interest rates. How's your outlook for inflation around the age of Pacific region and the risk of that, forcing some tightening from central banks? Yeah, we don't see inflation is a big issue for for Asia Pacific. More broadly, some of the pressure that we're seeing now of beauty supply bottlenecks..

"Right now, if you look at what's happening in terms of latest ICO news We have January producer prices for Japan down of 1.6%. That's year over year smack in line with estimates, Meantime, in South Korea, the adjusted jobless rate Up in the month of January to the highest level since 1999. So if you look at the equity price action in Tokyo, the Nikkei down 1/10 of 1%, Japan tobacco shares off 7%. The company is cutting jobs and closing factories. Looking at the price Action and Sydney We've got two big stocks moving to the downside. Commonwealth Bank of Australia first half profit declining 11%. They had some bad loans, the bank's net interest margin also shrinking. However, Ciba raised its dividend shares her down The 1.3% Crown resorts weaker by about 3.5% in Sydney trading. The casino operator found unfit for a license. In spite of these declines, the ASX 200 is pushing up by about a half of 1% in Seoul. The Cosby down 2/10 of 1% right now. We had a record setting session here in the safe states. Although it was a mixed finish some Dow weakness the S and P. 500 did drop from a record high as well. But the NASDAQ Comp and the Russell 2000 finished at all time highs in the Tokyo session. We've got a 10 year Treasury yielding 1.16%. Let's get an update on global news. Now Denise Pellegrini is in the Bloomberg newsroom. Denise. Thank you juggle the impeachment trial of former President Trump is underway. The Senate has voted. The proceedings are constitutional. But Democratic efforts to actually impeach Trump will likely fail without GOP support. Ah, World Health Organization official in Wuhan says it looks like coronavirus did not come from a Chinese lab. And the official says there's no need to investigate that theory. Further. Hong Kong officials have reportedly scheduled a meeting for this afternoon Sing, Tao says they'll be looking at whether to approve China's sign of AC vaccines for emergency use there. Governor. Cuomo says the U. S government plans to start increasing covert 19 vaccine allocations by 5% in the US in the coming weeks, and the Tokyo Olympic Committee has scheduled an emergency meeting. We'll be discussing the reaction to comments by the head of the committee. He's also a former prime minister there, and, he said women talk too much at board meetings. Global News 24 hours a day on Erin on Bloomberg quick take part by more than 2700, journalists and analysts. More than 120 countries. I'm dizzy. Spell a greeting. This is Bloomberg. Julia. Thanks, Denise. All right, let's get back to our guest. Rajiv D'Mello Development Committee chair of I'm as joining us from Singapore with the global market strategy and all the thoughts as well on Central bank Action China about to go into this very long Lunar New Year break. We think back to last year when this happened and the world was very different. When China came out of that break. We know the PBOC s signal signaling stability in Iran. But I guess does the PBOC have time to start normalizing policy or look at it now that we're seeing this rebound in the economy? Yes, a central bank all around the world always challenged to change policies on after a period of easing policy by the PBOC. It has signal to us that you know it is it is tightening. Oh, it is moving to bias. The Titan. I would note that speech on generally 18 by the PBOC Governor Yu Gang. And he said, I called from the macro perspective to stabilize the macro leverage ratio, so that's very important for them. And that's why we've seen some tightening at the margins. And we've seen short term rates go up a little bit at the end of January as well. On de so I think that it's no more going to be that same easy policy coming out of China. It is going to be one which is going to try to get down that mackerel. Average duration would use credit world Onboard is that will be a bit more challenging for the PBOC to communicate and clear. Wait. We're about to get to C P I and P p I for January as well. Some expectations. We could have seen CP I fall back towards deflation. What is your kind of raid on on what we're seeing in the economy. Well, yeah, in in China. I think we're seeing a very strong recovery that Q four was a very strong number. Maybe 2 to 1 will be a slightly less strong. But still, nevertheless, the V shape of revolution going on in China is is very clear and does have impacts worldwide so very optimistic on the recovery from from that side. Specially with easy policies perfectly into place Last year, I wanted to talk to what you're thinking. People are missing in this environment as we look to a recovery out of the pandemic, and you say that one of the things that concerns you the most is a shortage here of computer chips. Yes, indeed. That's something that we've heard a lot about from various spots off the after value train in in technology. There's been a tremendous surge in technology products coming off with women during the time of the pandemic. Onboard. It's being absolutely fantastic for for a lot of companies were involved in that supply chain. But more and more buyers as well as produces are commenting. On shortages on that may be a significant problem. That church is so important right now so many aspects of our lives. The way he thought two years that merely to higher prices or that authority being higher prices. May flowing into the technology with the meat slow down, you rolled out his products. I mean, some car manufacturers have announced problems and delivering because of the shortages. Just sign off on exuberance and one part of the economy, but it's very important part Yeah, absolutely. Let's also get your thoughts on the dollar moves we heard from Stanley Druckenmiller, saying that he's very, very short the U. S dollar here. He's also short Treasuries long commodities. The consensus view a stronger recovery could lead to a weakening dollar. So would you be a sort of in that same campus Stanley Druckenmiller? No. I can disagree with him on on that you I think that the dollar has indeed plunged a lot doing 2020 on Tao. It's probably time for some stabilization. And the reason for that is that Dollars. Sell a lot with us really, really of going negative, So no nominal yields rose very slightly, but inflation expectations went up, so the really of went down quite significantly. And that was weakening factor for a dollar in the past now going forward with this huge stimulus that we are about to get another one if it's somewhere between even one a half on 1.9 trillion That will lead to a rise in really off. Especially if the economy as I expected, recovering on unlocking and consumers spend some of their savings. And in bad faith. I would expect higher real years to support the dollar on me for that, back in the eighties as well, an example that the mid eighties We're gonna have to leave it there. But thank you so much Always great to chat. Rashid D'Mello Development Committee chair of Emma's on the line for us from Singapore here on Bloomberg. "The Senate is voted. The trial itself has constitutional. But as we've been reporting without Republican support, Democratic efforts to actually impeach the former president will fail. The World Health Organization says it is unlikely Corona virus came from a Chinese lab who officials in Wuhan, China today, telling reporters the virus most likely came from an animal host. Or from frozen wildlife. The Tokyo Olympic Committee is holding an emergency meeting this week to take a look at the controversy over former Prime Minister Yoshiro Modi's comments Matias head of the Olympic committee, but he's under fire for telling reporters. Women talk too much at board meetings. He's apologized, but he's been refusing to resign from the position and public broadcaster NHK says 36 of the 54 Olympic sponsors, who responded to its survey said Moody's comments were unacceptable. 18 declined to comment. Little those 24 hours a day on aired on quick take by Bloomberg, powered by more than 2700, journalists and analysts and more than 120 countries. I'm to these Pellegrini, this is Brooke Burke, Juliet. Thank you so much today. So let's get now to a guest. Rajiv D'Mello Development Committee chair of I'm asked to discuss the market news off the day joining us from Singapore. So we saw Tech stocks continue to rise a little bit of a pullback in the key US indexes. But of course, as we know they're all it records small caps having their best start to a year since 1991 What kind of signals if any. Would trigger some kind of meaningful correction here. Thank you for having me on the show. I mean those key risks. There are a few of them and I think for me the most important one is really central banks changing the tone. It doesn't seem to be need likelihood right now for any tone change by the Fed. But I would look beyond the Fed to the PBOC and China's. Well, either of these two central banks. I think change in tone would be material and could be triggered by, you know, higher inflation or shop of growth recovery. The big stimulus which seeing in the U. S. Could have effects on on that tone by central banks. The other worry which I have is, Of course, these covert variants, which which could become more harmful so far, they seem to be Okay. And vaccine injury was to treat them. But what if that was less the case of going forward? And and finally, I would also think that bubble risk. We saw a little bit of that concern of the end of January. Something many markets. I would say extreme valuations and could be susceptible to shop of us of triggered by by anything, really. So, um, it's dies, Risks and these expensive valuations. Do you pull back here or you stay invested. No, I stay invested because while I think that those are listed the rest, I do think the underlying stories still that we inflation recovery trade. We haven't sleep price that in. We are getting surprises. Like, for example, this 1.9 trillion stimulus package. Initially there was we talked about a compromise. Now it's one more likely that the Democrats segment of push for the full package by reconciliation. If that goes through it at levels around there, or maybe just seemed like there, that's huge. That's a huge Component of GDP of the 89% stimulus on if you know we're hoping economies and vaccines are being rolled out on good accepted That leads to a surgeon pent up demand. And certainly pent up demand in a lot of these areas that have bean struggling during the pandemic. We look at the likes of airlines the travel industry. I note that their areas you're looking at potential overweight here. Where do you see further normalization in in crude and energy stocks in particular, given, we're now getting back towards trade war levels for crude. Absolutely so that that creates started really well, initially started in May when food the job and then really accelerated afterwards in early November. Andre it is really linked of economic cycle. So when there's a global recovery, energy prices will start rising special expectations. Travel will be Looser restrictions and travels will be Lucien's on. So that means all those sectors which were really badly affected will recover some of the case right now, But the stock market is forward looking on when we see the number of vaccinations going on every single day. Just give us hope that this can't continue further on the money to spend is that saving the high on stimulus checks are all over the place. And just quickly your topics in emerging markets. Well, Generally, I like emerging markets Overall, I would rotate to them one No one's, which are more sensitive to growth. I mean, all emerging markets are but we've seen really great performance from China from from Korea from Taiwan on the technology side. That should be time for the others to catch Oppa's well. So anything linked to commodities linked to this global recovery Boarding off it are good. The cyclic defectors energy. Will you mentioned financials as well. All those in in with an emerging markets will continue to do well on every trade. Let's talk more about central banks that in a moment you touch there before and China going into this Lunar New Year holiday tomorrow. The PBOC certainly trying to signal Lot of stability is the key focus. Rajiv DeMello Development Share committee chair of I'm Us with us here from Singapore. Canada is not list of the self styled proud Boy Group, a terrorist organization. Million. More military has filed their first formal charge against on Sans Souci possessing illegally imported walkie talkies. The Tokyo Olympic Committee along with the IOC of issue their first of four playbooks of navigating through the games in a pandemic and a lot of attention being paid to the head of the Tokyo Olympic Committee, former prime minister Yoshiro Mori getting a social media backlash for saying on live stream on the issue of adding more women to the Olympic Committee that quote he had found the Japan Rugby Football Board meetings took twice as long after number of women participants were increased, He says women are highly competitive and if one speaks Then others also feel they must do so in San Francisco. I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg. Paul. Yeah, breathing in through my teeth it thanks very much for that. We're joined now by my Cranfield. He is Bloomberg, Emma Life strategist to discuss some of the market news of the day. And, um, acquiescing some pretty big moves in the bond market. The yield on the 10 year creeping up further again, and we're seeing those yield curve steepening too. What's driving this Well, it doesn't help that you've heard some central bank speakers, particularly people from the Federal Reserve in the past couple of days, saying that they're willing to be soft on their inflation target. So what they're saying is, they're happy to see Economy run hot and if inflation goes about 2% even towards 3%, that's okay. Now, so that's really a green light. Do people at the long end of the bond market, really just to go and sell bonds because it's saying that the central bank is is going to stand back there. The typical reaction function of the central bank is that when they see inflation coming, they would increase short term interest rates to try and Send that off. But those things for the time being, then they're not going to do that. So Since they have short term interest rates pretty much under control in year. 0% is only one thing that can happen, and that's the long end of the curve has to take the brunt of the activity. And then that is why We'll have any kind of steepening. So until you see central bankers come out with a bit more the hawkish tone, there's certainly no incentive for people to stand back from pushing the Yoko steeper. Is there something that may be influencing the price action beyond just fed speak? I'm looking at the 80 P number today, Many more jobs than forecast in the month of January were added to the American economy and we have the employment report. Talking with someone earlier in the week, saying that there is really the potential for upside surprise in this non farm payrolls data, and that could rip maybe spoil the markets. E could guess. Acquiescence with this idea that inflation is sanguine and growth remains moderate. Yeah, absolutely. But those those numbers will be important and they would certainly have an impact and you throw on top of that. The fact that the vaccine rolled out in major countries seem to be going better than than expected. If you look at the global numbers, particularly for the United States and the UK, which are Two of the most significant places that had very, very high virus cases. But the rollout of excellent think very good and they're ahead of schedule, so the quicker they can get They're the nation's vaccinated and protected Then obviously he's gonna lead to more activity or the economic output. So but of course as well, you're going to see GDP numbers eventually start Tomo proving even better than than we've seen recently. So all of that Is also going to help to push bombs in the same direction. So definitely vaccines and jobs are all playing a part in this this whole picture. We do get a variety of opinions on the future of the U. S. Dollar and 2021 on the show and say the consensus probably revolves around the dollar weakness story. But despite their the green bag, holding up pretty well, but the Bank of England's meeting on Thursday could that change the picture? It'll They probably don't have a big role to say in the dollar. Overall, people will certainly be looking at what it means for the pound. The Bank of England has been one of those central banks that has opened the door to the possibility of negative short term interest rates really have it in Europe and Japan. On the Bank of England have hinted that they would do so if if the U. K economy was weak enough. The fact that the UK is so well on rolling out the vaccines will property make the Bank of England stop and think, because that would help? Certainly Seo improve the economic outlook in the UK for the second half of this year. They think of England might want a bit more time to digest. How is going to impact the situation locally, so they may talk about negative. Us, But they probably not going to give any timetable for when that's gonna happen, in which case the pound will probably not be too affected by that. But certainly the dollar has had a bit of a squeeze, and some of that is because positioning Towards the end of last year was so skewed towards people they were short of the U..

I'm Ed Baxter, This is Bloomberg guys. All right. Thanks so much. Let's get now, too. I guess Stephen and his chief market strategist at Mexico joining us from Bangkok, Stephen, We had that kind of rollercoaster 30 minutes or so around this time yesterday on the Navarro induced comments. So we've also got concerns about new virus infections and then Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin saying that he expects the US recession will end by the end of the year. How do you Kind of position yourself amongst all of this noise, but also attention. Very carefully. It's Courtney Building markets and, you know, trying to pinpoint what's going on at any moment. It's quite difficult because it's just a huge disconnect between you know the economic Forward looking indications versus You know where we are in stock markets right now, all over starting to see some piece of data overnight. I mean, that could just be a pent up demand issue. We start at in the P investigators released yesterday against her some inclination that some participants view that is appreciate V shaped recovery. I'm sort of a little bit rather down, not you. His only confusion, indexes and coming from the plummeting the depths where we were a month ago to raising up this month. I don't think we should be celebrating two wildly just yet. And we're rates being where they are, Stephen. I mean, there are very few alternatives. And I was looking at the price action today in gold. I mean, we're at the highest level since about 2012 on a few of these contracts, and I'm Going back to the beginning of the year. I mean, 25% gain. Really? So do you think this is maybe another one of the areas where that fear of missing out trade is playing into into the market? It certainly feels like if you look at the the way that the market's going, I think highlighted exactly is this fear of missing out? I think we're also seeing that tendency and stock markets right now we're starting to see people leave the money market funds scared to miss out on rising stocks. I think some of that money coming out of money market buying, it's for you to go BTS. So there's a big retail pent up than that, I think Arguably you go into any wealth management shop right now they're gonna be pumping a gold is a primary defensive strategy. And I think that's out into the lustre. But getting back to the fact that things here I think this Mark it on the broader scales, positioning for currency, the basement on the expectation that inflation could go raging quite higher. And I think even the stronger day university this is sort of encouraging that notion that we could see hyperplasia of the economy. Maybe not next week, of course, but six months to one year down the road. So, with all of those points in mind, what assets do you see out perform in the second half? But it's you know, I'm still fairly optimistic that we're going Tio. We're going to get a bit of a reality check on the Q three data. I think you know the growth and the unemployment issues are probably going to revert from Main Street issues. Wall Street problems. I think that's for the check. And the reality check for the incredulous amount is going to be effective. I would be a little bit defensive going into the queue three. I think the strategy is still to remain in gold. For those reasons that I mentioned before. You do avoid the fixed income markets at all costs just because of how far yields have come down. That's the scary part. I mean, you know you're basically buying into negative territory and a real a real yield based on that's quite scary. I mean, the only other alternative really just to sort of broaden your horizons, too. Other carry traits, for instance, for singer large propensity over here in agent to buy into the Indonesian rupee on detention rupee itself and the underlying bonds. This is quite a convincing argument. You're looking at very low volatility in the U. S rates market currency markets. Quite frankly, you know what that dollar selling off? It's not just taking a risk. Being short dollar in Ojai Currency guard are yielding currency, so that seems to be resonating the global investors right now. Let's talk about in terms of what we are expecting from further stimulus from central banks, because we know a lot of this liquidity has been underpinning what we're seeing in market action. We do have a couple of central banks this week or today, I should say a peon said coming up shortly. And and where where you are the Bank of Thailand. What are you expecting? Well, I think they're both corners remain on hold..

Oh, I wantto speaking of that. I want to mention to. You broke about 1/2 an hour ago. Officials in Charleston, South Carolina, now have voted to remove a statue of former vice president and slavery advocate John C. Calhoun from a down to town square. In San Francisco. I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg back to Hong Kong and Brian Curtis. Thanks very much. Ed. Let's take a look at the media review from the South China Morning Post. Senior mainland officials yesterday met with 120 representatives from abroad section of Hong Kong Society. No critics, though, but anyway, in the end what China said, was that it has unanimous support for the new National Security law. And here's the story also from the post that knew you leaders take a tough line in talks with China. So Ursula von early, and when she spoke in front of the cameras at at or in Brussels on Monday, she really laid it out against China. She said that China had under the delivered on its promise is, she said it's a long list from bilateral investment to World Trade Organization reforms, climate change targets, and she said there were many irreconcilable differences over issues like Hong Kong's national security law, human rights and disinformation campaigns attributed to Chinese cyber actors. That's a quick snatch of some of the stories that I've been looking at here in the media. Doug and Kathleen back to you. Ryan. Thanks so much. We want to get right to a guess. I am very eager to be speaking to today. Henrietta Trays is director of economic policy at Veda Partners, would I You wouldn't know from that, however, is that she said about 10 years or so in the U. S Senate Finance Committee that tarp so many things that happened during the crisis and has worked in politics and in many roles for a long time, And she's going to discuss what it's not only the markets but the latest on but so much in the news. The China phase one trade deal, words going or not going, particularly after the story about Peter Navarro? Saying it's over. Henrietta. Welcome. It is great to meet you by radio. In a nutshell. You agree that back when Navarro said, this trade deal is over, is that right? Yes, Thank you so much for having me and for that lovely introduction when Navarro spoken, said that the trade deal was done the reason the market responded because it's distinctly within the realm of the possible. It is where everyone's head is that the question I get most investors and our clients. Not, you know, Are we going to see a phase to deal which was, you know really going to be the crux of the U. S. China negotiations But rather whenever we going to pull out of phase one, China's purchasing somewhere in the range of about 45% of what they said they were going to purchase in 2020 and the farmers themselves are sending letters to the president, encouraging him to stay in phase one. Because she's clearly showing signs of, you know, stressing the couple ing and questioning where China is, If you heard Navarro's commentary, it was pretty obvious that he was sort of speaking out of turn, and, Ah, it tends to get a little for lack of a better word. Just excited when he's in front of a camera. So I don't think he was necessarily speaking directly to that question. But the gist of his argument was essentially exactly what he said. Which was, you know, the U. S and China are headed in a very bad direction. There's no good news on the trade front for anyone in favor of free markets. There is just news. That's less bad. So you have life Kaiser, who in front of the House Ways and Means Committee on Wednesday and the Senate Finance Committee on Wednesday. Really made it clear that he supports tariff. He actually went out of his way to rebut the opinion and the view of 74% of economists in early Janey in early 2019. That the US is going to go into a recession, in part because of these terrorists. Indeed, it was a really aggressive line of commentary on something that ruffled a lot of feathers on Capitol Hill. So, Henrietta word is that places in terms of the election? I mean, we've got a couple of months till November. There is going to be a lot of support that the administration is going to expect from some of these agricultural states. Is that at risk right now? You know what? I'll let the number shock about this in the last two months, actually, just a month and 1/2. Since early May, the Trump Administration has spent $2 million On Iowa and Ohio. That's not what you should be doing if you won the state by a very comfortable margin just four years ago, so the Trump administration in their campaign team are telling you directly that they have problems in those states. The bigger issue that I look at, and I think investors should watch because it's more important to know what the Senate makeup is going to be in 2020 as opposed to who the president is. Because they'll actually be the ones getting legislation through the issue for the Republicans right now and for President Trump in particular, and I think really the on ly leash, keeping him in the face one trade deal until at least November 4th..
