Forte is 3-1 favorite for Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs
"Todd pletcher trained colt forte and Brad Cox's Philly wet paint are the morning line favorites respectively for the 149th Kentucky Derby and Kentucky oaks at Churchill downs. Forte, the two year old champion who led the Derby qualifying trail drew the number 15 post at three to one odds on Monday for the $3 million premier race for three year olds. He brings in a 5 race winning streak and has won 6 of 7 starts, including last month's Florida Derby, won by a length over a match who will start from the number 8 post at 15 to one odds. Wet paint drew the number 7 post for the oaks at 5 to two odds. I'm geffen coolbaugh.

Again, that was March 11th, 1943, and tomorrow, march 12th, 1966, the anniversary of Johnny Logan. It was in the last race of his 40 year career that Johnny longden won the San Juan capistrano handicap at Santa Anita park aboard George royal. He retired with a then record number of victories, 6000 32. Again, that was March 12th, 19 66, and those are historical dates in racing history as they apply to this weekend. A lot of great things happening, including the tip may Derby this afternoon, and you heard Todd pletcher in the previous segment talking about his two runners. He has the two morning line favorites in that race. As you would expect, that the road to success in the Tampa Bay Derby is going to go through Todd pletcher. So that is absolutely not surprising. I want to thank everybody who took time here over the first two hours of the show. But so many of you taking time to weigh in and cast your votes there. The updated scoring beholder, 82% over azeri with 18% minimum girl 51% of the vote over lady secret. That's a shocker to me. "Radio network. Todd, before I let you go, how about an update on your Sam F Davis winner litigate what's going on there? We're kind of deciding between the Louisiana Derby and possibly the wood memorial talk to the guys that's Nintendo and will firm it up. We like the idea of the mine three sixteenths and Louisiana and we also like the idea of going back to New York with them. So we're kind of just going to kind of see how things unfold here in the next couple of weeks and it looks like we'll probably take kings barns to the Louisiana Derby and maybe classic catch to the wood memorial. So we're going to just try to figure out which direction to go litigate. Yeah, he kind of litigate kind of has that Louisiana pedigree too, right? He's a son of blame out of a mineshaft mayor. They both had success in New Orleans. So why not? That's a good point. Yeah, yeah, we'll find out, but he certainly looks talented too and Todd pletcher is his talented as they come when it comes to trainers in the sport of thoroughbred racing. Todd, I really appreciate the visit. I know you've got some other things to get to. So I'll let you go. All the best my friend and keep it rolling. All right, thanks very much. Always fun to catch up with Todd pletcher and as I mentioned at the beginning of the conversation, just like Tim yak teen and Ben colebrooke and all the trainers on the road to The Kentucky Derby now just trying to keep their fingers crossed. Hope everything goes well. Stays on track and still trying to figure out where they're going to go with some of these horses. Keep them separated and put them in the right spots. And the best spots to have success. So my thanks Todd for taking the time for that interview, always fun to catch up with the Hall of Famer. When I come back, I'll take a look at a couple historical dates in racing history as they apply to this weekend and I'll get you ready for hour number three. This is the equine forum. "Him being done at one point in the race pretty much would have to wait for another day and then running again at the end came back on one by a nose over schoolyard dreams, super saver was third. Super saver, for Todd pletcher, would go on and win The Kentucky Derby that year. Todd is in search of his 6th win in the Tampa Bay Derby later today. His 5 previous winners have not won The Kentucky Derby, but it was the horse that finished third in the Tampa Bay Derby. That would give him that win in the run for the roses. Well, Todd also has a pretty good one in forte, who won the fountain of youth last weekend, and Tim yakin, you heard him say in the last segment in that interview that they're not going to run in The Kentucky Derby. They're going to win The Kentucky Derby if they go. Well, in order to do that, you may have to take down champion forte, who looked every bit the part of a Derby favorite last weekend, and Todd pletcher took time yesterday to talk to me about forte, talk to me about the Tampa Bay Derby, and then look ahead to the run for the roses. Well, Todd pletcher is going to be busy on Saturday afternoon. He has a couple of horses going in the Tampa Bay Derby. Both of those are morning line favorites. He has the morning light favorite and the second choice on the morning line as he goes in search of a 6th win in that race, but last weekend he sent out two year old champion forte. His three year old debut was ultra impressive and provided him with a fourth win in the fountain of youth and Todd. he looked every bit the part of a leading Kentucky Derby contender. What was your reaction as you were watching things unfold? Well, I was really pleased going into the first turn that we were able to get the position that I read and I had talked about trying to get before the race. And he got toppled around a little bit at the start, but I was able to kind of put himself in a good stocking spot very similar to position himself in the breeders cup juvenile and the breeders utilities. So I was very pleased when we got to the first turn the way we did and then just traveling down the backside my only concern was when they kind of showed that they've got that head on view down the back stretch and kind of looked and you could see it was in behind kind of a wall of horses. So I was just hoping you'd find a place to go and eventually what I read was able to work him out into the clear he just kind of had to sacrifice and go 5 wide to do it, but you know he had a lot of worse underneath him and looked like he really accelerated nicely and kind of came to the finish line with his ears prick. So it was it was everything that we were hoping for, but also kind of based on the way he had been training. It was what we were expecting. What boxes were you hoping that he was going to check in that race? And did he check all of the boxes you wanted him to? Well, we wanted him to show that he'd still maintained his form from his two year old year and like I said, based on the way he had been training, we felt very confident that he had improved since last year. And really, we just wanted to show we wanted to go over and behave well in the paddock and behave well in the paddock ring and the walk ring and the warmup and the gate and do all those things professionally like you always have. And then we wanted to see him perform the way he the way he was performing and even then some. So I think to me he checked he checked every box you'd like to see he showed that he's improved from two to three showed that the layoff was no concern. He handled the environment really well and it was a hot day and he maintained his composure really well and so yeah, I think it was everything that we could have hoped for. Well, not at least answered those questions. We know that the fountain of youth is not the ultimate goal. That will come on the first Saturday in May. What do you have to do now to make sure that over the next couple of months that everything goes the way you want it to go and that he's ready to peak on the first Saturday and may. Well, the plan that we had talked about was running in the fountain of youth evaluating how that goes. And then deciding if we want to come back in the Florida Derby or if we felt like we needed a little more time, the bluegrass and based on the way he handled everything at Gulfstream and the ways that he's come out of the race so far, we're kind of leaning towards the Florida Derby, we'd like the idea of having 5 weeks after the Florida Derby, The Kentucky Derby. We like the idea of being able to stay in Florida a little bit longer with more reliable weather and so that's kind of what we're thinking right now. Every indication so far is he's taking the race great bounced out of it with good energy and it's back training with enthusiasm.

We edge ever closer to the first Saturday in May. Now just 56 days, 8 hours, 45 minutes and 11 seconds until that run for the roses should be fantastic. "Over the course of the past year. And I thank you for tuning in each and every week. While the road to the Derby is starting to get to the next level. One more 50 point race, then we start looking ahead to the 100 point races, 56 days, 9 hours, 42 minutes, and 44 seconds, remaining until the run for the roses on Saturday May 6th. The Tampa Bay Derby is the lone points race slated for this weekend, and as you might expect, if you want to get the 50 points, which go to the winner of that race. You have to beat Hall of Famer, Todd pletcher. The race goes through Todd, Todd is in search of his 6th win in the Tampa Bay Derby, and he's going to saddle the top two choices on the morning line. Tap it trace. And it's just. And to give you a little more perspective on what Todd's doing, his dominance in this race. Consider that no other trainer has won the Tampa Bay Derby more than twice. And with this being the 43rd renewal later today, Todd's 5 wins in the previous 42 runnings is good for 14%. That is ridiculous. Todd has won 14%. Of all the Tampa Bay derbies ever run. Tod took time to join me for an interview yesterday, which you're going to hear coming up at 9 40 eastern. And he talked about why this particular race has been so good for him and for his program. He also spent plenty of time talking about two year old champion forte and if he's right in his opinion of where this horse is right now, you can pretty much forget about anyone else. I think Todd's feeling extremely confident, with forte, as he should, and again, you're going to hear that full interview coming up at 9 40 eastern with Todd pletcher. Today's stakes calendar also honors two of the best female horses in the history of our sport, with the azeri stakes at Oakland, and the beholder mile at Santa Anita. We always talk about how difficult it can be to compare horses or teams from different eras. But who would you take if both of those horses were in the same race? Azeri and beholder. And let's put their resumes side by side. I was trying to think about how I might answer that question. And I did a deep dive into both of their careers. Both horses are in the Hall of Fame, so that's a push. Both received four eclipse awards during their careers. So that's a draw. Although azeri was voted, horse of the year in 2002. So maybe that carries a little more weight for some of you. Azeri one 17 of her 24 starts beholder, one 18 of 26, so not a big difference there, almost identical. Grade one victories, how about this? Dead even. Both horses recorded an incredible 11 grade one wins. So maybe maybe the deciding factor to help answer my initial question lies in the number of breeders cup wins. Tallied by each. Beholder won the juvenile Phillies at two, then went on to win the breeders cup distaff. Not once but twice. As there is only breeders cup win, came in the 2002 diss staff, and she likely would have won another in 2004, but her connections opted for the breeders cup classic, where she finished 5th in a race one by fellow Hall of Famer, ghost sapper, and that was a loaded edition of the breeders cup classic that year. But that's about the only real difference between azeri and beholder, and your nitpicking. But if you're going to answer that question and you have to pick one, I'm going to give the edge to beholder. Three breeders cup wins. And the way that she did them, and accomplish those three wins, especially her last one, simply magnificent. And when Dale and Tim join me on today's edition of I asked the answer at ten 30 eastern, I'm going to present them with several head to head matchups to debate. Featuring some of the greatest diss staffers in the history of our sport, including azeri versus beholder. I'll get their thoughts on who they feel. Would win if both of those horses were in the same race. In the meantime, I want to know your thoughts on those matchups. And you can do it right now on our Twitter and Facebook page. It's going to do it a little bit differently this morning. Typically, I will throw out a single poll question. And update the results throughout the show, but this week is going to be a little different. In honor of these great dist staffers being remembered today, I want you to vote. On the matchups that I'm going to bring up with Dale and Tim later. So here's your choices, and

"James, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention this before we start looking ahead. Biggest race of the weekend actually was not a race for the three year olds. It was the big cap out at San Anita the San Anita handicap still a big deal. Maybe not quite as big a deal as it was in the past. But we saw a really good renewal this year and an exciting stretch run with stiletto boy proxy and defunded battling in the final furlong stiletto boy getting the win with kenta sormo aboard a little bit of a surprise, my friend. He was, I mean, having won only one of his, I think, previous 13 starts. Definitely a double digit upset. But his form had been trending in the right direction, I thought he ran second to country grammar in the San Antonio and then ran third in the Pegasus World Cup behind art collector into funded. So he did have something going for him in a sense off those two races and really finished gamely to out basically out finished proxy who was also finishing. The real story was to fund it had a clear lead and upper stretch and just, you know, basically gave it up a little bit. It looks like a little bit of a scenario with him where it sort of reminded me of life is good in the Dubai World Cup last year where, you know, ten furlongs might be just a little bit too far for him. But he remains a real top class horse. I think for Bob Baffert. And I thought hopper had a troubled trip in fourth. He still lightly raced for baffert. So I agree with you. I thought it was a strong rendition of it. I do want to mention real quick. I forgot earlier. I want to thank Jim for his comments and I want to actually also say congrats to Vince for picking Darth Vader. She was a Philly Bobby where you had to draw a line through her last race. She ran a complete conquer and a stake, but in her two starts before that had won back to back stakes. And at 46 to one, Vince, you know, snuffed that out, so congrats to him. Yeah, nice picks there. And certainly makes you feel good when you can walk away with the track with a lot more money than when you walked in through the turnstiles. Okay, the biggest race coming up this weekend is the only Kentucky Derby prep in the United States this weekend. It is the grade three Tampa Bay Derby. And if I would have told you, James, after the running of the Sam Davis, back on February 11th, the trainer Todd pletcher was going to win the Tampa Bay Derby this year. You just said, well, look what litigate just did. He just beat the field fairly handily in the Sam Davis, which is the big local prep for the Tampa Bay Derby makes sense that he would show up and he would be the one to beat. Well, he's not back for the Tampa Bay Derby, but Todd Fletcher does have the favorite. In fact, he may have the first two choices in the race and tap it price and chest erkin. Is it just me, James or does tap it prices last race just tower over everyone in this field? Yeah, I think it does. I mean, granted it came in at one turn mile, but you know, you look at him he's by tap it and he looks like he'll handle mom of 16th to me and that was just a monstrous performance. Really sort of gutted out his maiden win two starts back. The O.C. beats came right back and one is made and ran second in the Gotham. So he beat a decent horse that day and took a huge step forward at Gulfstream on that undercard like you were referenced. A Todd putcher, yeah, I thought this other horse is adding bleecker's and was like rated a little bit just darken and I think he's going to try to show speed from the outside. So that's attractive Tampa has favored speed a little bit, so be interested to see what kind of trips I works out with tap a price. But there's no reason why he can't be sitting like fourth or 5th and just sitting in a catbird seat in a sense because there could be a few horses out there trying to contest in the pace. I think Bobby. So if I were to tell you that tap it tries will not win the Tampa Bay Derby, who were the horses that you would focus in on. Well, I'm going to mention a couple horses. I mean, one thing about litigate, you know, it looks like putter's pointing him for Louisiana Derby. And putters had a stranglehold on this Tampa Bay Derby. He's looking for his 6th. He's already won a record 5 of them. But I look at some inside horses, I think are going to show positional speed are going to be up close towards the front because I think that's the best place to be. I'm going to start off with number four groveland who, you know, it's just made nice progress for Ian hardy, a street sense Cole. He ran second in a deep allowance race to starts back and then he ran second in the same F Davis. I don't see why he can't have a similar trip and have a chance, perhaps to keep improving a little bit. And the other one that's a little intriguing to me is in post three and that's classic legacy, because Bobby, he recorded a front running win to starts back. And I just thought he sort of got away slowly in that Sam F Davis and, you know, came around in the okay to be fourth, but I look for more aggressive up close trip with Iran Ortiz taken over the mount for Belmont on classic legacy. Once again, it points qualifier on the road to this year's Kentucky Derby 50 points to the winner of the Tampa Bay Derby this year. It's one of 5 stakes on the Tampa Bay downs card on Saturday. That goes as race 11. In fact, race is 8 9 ten. I'm sorry, 7, 8, 9, ten, and 11 are all stakes. And I know a race that you're really interested in race that has your best bet of the weekend is the grade three Florida oaks for the three year old Phillies going a mile in a 16th on the turf 14 were entered 12 will run goes as race ten on the card. How did you see the Florida oaks? Well, I'll just say when I looked when I first saw the field, I was surprised to see dreaming of snow. I just thought you would stay on the dirt off that upset win in the sun coast over wonder wheel and Julia shining. But she is scheduled to make her turf debut. And she's listed at 8 to one. The favorite in this race is number ten free look. And she's returning off a layoff having run 5th in the breeder's cup juvenile Phillies. And Bobby, this is like a this has been something that I've followed for years. I like playing against horses that are like one for four or one for 5 or so off of long layoffs at short odds. I like that strategy. I liked seeing free look, draw outside where she's going to have to work a trip. I'm telling number two all American Beauty. I thought that this is affiliate $700,000 well bred Philly by Indonesia. She got bent down to favor schism in her debut at the aqueduct ran for. I thought that last time out that she didn't really start to, you know, like she had her head sideways on the turn was a little bit ranked, but when she freaking put it together, I like the way she finished up in the stretch. And I look forward to keep moving forward off that race. 8 to one with Edgar ziya's number two all American Beauty. I'm taking a shot at an upset in the Florida oaks. Okay, certainly respect your opinion. And I don't want to give away too much as I'm going to be talking about this race with pay Freeman as part of our weekend stakes preview tomorrow night from 6 to 7 p.m.. I can say this. I'm intrigued with the Philly outside of her number three alpha Bella. I thought she looked pretty good in the sweetest chant. Last time out, tell me what I'm missing is why alpha Bella can't win this race or do you think she can win the race? Yeah, I mean definitely I thought Bella and navy goat who ran second and third and even there's another one in here. Those horses were running against Cairo consort in those in those terse states that Gulfstream and that was a really solid effort. I think alpha Bella as opposed to some of those

"There was a little bit of a shift there with forte, because according to Todd pletcher, the plan all along had been to run in the fountain of youth and then very likely go back to keenland for the bluegrass where he's already won twice and then go to Churchill with the Florida Derby kind of being the backup selection as far as an option to the bluegrass. But after winning the fountain of youth, it sounds like something has changed because now the floor to Derby is there is their main goal ahead of The Kentucky Derby instead of the bluegrass, have you heard anything why the switch in plans? I saw on Sunday afternoon where he spoke to Mike Welsh of the racing form Sunday morning after the race and he said he preferred the 5 week gap on April 1st from the Florida Derby to the Derby instead of the four weeks. I mean, it was non weeks. The Derby was 9 weeks from Saturday. So they either had to go 5 weeks to the bluegrass and then four to The Kentucky Derby and given he had run so well over both tracks. It was the spacing that made the difference with the Florida Derby. Very interesting. Out on the West Coast, we saw another big performance from three year old with Derby aspirations, the Tim yak teen trainee practical move, backed up a graded stakes when at Los alamitos with a win in the San Felipe stakes. And the funny thing was Tim yak team was getting a whole lot of publicity before this race, but it was mainly it seemed for being taking over some of the former Bob Baffert trainees on a temporary basis. I don't think he was really getting any sort of pub for the horse that he's had all along practical move, but he's going to have plenty of publicity now going forward. I agree and in fact, despite having won that Los Alameda for charity by open lens, he was ten to one that day in a 5 horse field and he wound up drifting up to 4.20 to one Bobby and that was the actual fourth choice in the San Felipe field. The two horses were in second and third were the favored in the second choice. And Haji, who wound up forth, set the pace. The thing with the baffert horses, there were four transferred entered in that race, only three went to the post and arguably the most accomplished, most respected Derby contender was national treasure. He scratched with a minor foot issue, but apparently acting said he could make back can still make the final prep and be okay and sets for the Derby. I just thought, you know, to me, practical move is not grinding out those wins. He's offering an explosive turn of foot into the stretch and granted he got a great trip in that same Felipe along the inside, but I thought that was pretty impressive to come back and win that race like he did and bodes pretty well for him. He's still got to stretch out to a mile and 8th next time, but that was a good-looking one. Yeah, the positive is that he looked really, really good doing it. I guess if you're a glass half empty kind of a person you're saying, yeah, well, he was beating horses that were stretching out or maybe just coming off their maiden winds and didn't have quite the bottom that some of the other horses who were running around the country had, but listen, he did what he needed to do and he continues to improve and he certainly looks like a major player when he goes in the Santa Anita Derby next. He doesn't need to run in the scene. I need a Derby to qualify for The Kentucky Derby. He's already got plenty of points right now, but plenty of money on the line in the Santa Anita Derby en route to that first Saturday in May. All right, we're going to take our first break. When we come back, we've got two other big Derby prep from this past weekend to look at or to recap. We're going to look forward to the big races at Tampa Bay downs this weekend. "That's our producer Lee. That is bad. I'm going to say that I'm in this race, but I want to sell him for the Derby. I don't think this race will produce it to everyone. Okay. How about the San Felipe stakes at Santa Anita, the favorite is national treasure, first start for trainer Tim yak teen after being transferred from the barn of Bob Baffert, Dale by or sell. I'm going to buy him, I think, voice that go ahead, Lee. I'm going to buy the source. That's a good horse. He could be bought in the race, and he possibly could be bought for the Derby. Timmy? Well, this is I'm going to agree with Dale. I'm going to buy this one. In this race, one of Tim yak teen has, I think it's 5 total, but four of them are formerly baffert horses and American treasure was third in the breeders cup juvenile last year. Second in the American Farrell last year last year, and he was in his debut, he was third in the sham at odds on. So I think that he's going to be a horse that I think should win this race, but he's going to have competition. I mean, my butchered this name had jazzy, who was also from bob's barn is now with the act in the New York bread, the New York horse that went for three and a half million bucks. He's eligible, I think, to do something pretty cool in this race, but as far as national treasure goes, I'm going to buy. All right, Timmy, we'll stick with you for the fountain of youth. I think this one is maybe I'll be surprised by your answers to this one, but the juvenile champion forte returns in this one for Todd pletcher by or sell. So in light of our little competition, I have to buy, don't I? Yes. And he's one of my stable fantasy stable horses in here. And he's the defending juvenile champ from last year. Todd Fletcher has said on record that he's been trading better than he's ever been trading, but also it's his first start since the juvenile last year. I mean, the source doesn't have to be ramped up to his full potential in this race because the bigger goal is down the line. And he's already got 40 points in the Derby standings. He's probably going to get in off that. I'm not saying that forte's going to just lay an egg here. I think he's the horse to beat. And there's some stiff competition in here. And I also hope that another horse, a cyclone horse rebounds in this race, but for my standpoint, the fact that he's on my fantasy team, I hope he wins. Well, there you go. Again, I want to sell him in his race. But I'll buy him for a Derby prospect, because he's a real deal. And you know, we've seen the two best two year old Phillies come back and throw a little clunkers first time back and I bought both of them. I think you're going to rebound. And I think the same thing could happen here. Dale, does your decision to sell forte have anything to do with what Timmy just mentioned in the fact that you're saddling cyclone mischief against him later today? 100%. That's all. I can't buy the competition. I'm buying Dell Romans later today in that fountain of youth. So Dale, good luck there. One more for you, the John battaglia memorial at turfway. Don't dismiss this race, rich strike came out of this race last year to win the Derby. Gilmore, his first start for Brendan Walsh is the favorite in here, runner up in the el Camino real Derby with Bob Baffert last time out. Dale, what do you think? Buy or sell Gilmore. I want to buy him in this spot. Brendan is a good friend of mine. Brennan's, we're country club buddies. We go the same club. We play playing together, hang out together. As far as next to my Churchill, one of the great guys of the game, kind of an under the radar guy, I think he's going to do a great job of the source. I want to buy. I did a lot of thinking on this one, and I'm giving him a lukewarm buy on this one. I mean, he's already proven on a synthetic surface when he was second in the el Camino real. And. This should be right up his alley. And Richard, like you mentioned rich strike was fourth in this race last year and I think he's the only horse that's ever come out of this race to win the Derby and of course no one ever saw that coming. But for this race, I'm going to take a buy on the Gilmore man, not the Gilmore girl. All right. There you go. We'll do it all over again with buy or sell as we get closer to The Kentucky Derby. We'll maybe do it with the top 5 list for The Kentucky Derby as we get closer. But that wraps up this week's edition. Now we had to another fun segment that we like to do every single week. And then race number 13, which is the grade two Mac derma stakes mile and three eighths on the turf, that's the race proceeding, race number 14, of course, which is the fountain of use. So a lot of things to get to, my friend. It's going to be one hell of a day of racing down at Gulfstream. Absolutely. And it looks like Todd pletcher is really loaded for bear on that card. He's going to have at least three very heavy favorites for obviously the key one in the fountain of youth and so yeah, and he's got three horses in the first race. I'm looking at it in the colonel Liam race number 5 and the one on gravitating toward his number two okay boomer from the team valor stable, okay, boomer enters this as stakes debut two for two. I went back and looked at his allowance win is mid January at Gulfstream and I was impressed by this colt's potential. He kind of was making a move into contention at the quarter poll kind of got stopped a little bit in behind horses, but him and jockey lily sayas did not panic kind of waited until the turn for home switched out. For running room and then came on late and won by a length and okay, boomer was, I think, I don't think he's totally he's totally mentally in the game yet. He's still a young horse still learning, but I was rather impressed by what I saw in that allowance race. I think this is a good spot for him to make his stakes debut and I think his stablemates in here due to Colorado and Santorini, both have some speed here and if they set anonymous honest enough pace, I think they could certainly help okay boomer come from behind in this race. There is a European in here Vance and this is always a topic I like to bring up when I am visiting with a handicapper here on the show because so many people will look at the European past performances and of course I use the bris past performances and there aren't running lines. There isn't a lot of information like we get with the U.S. past performances and I'm talking about number three and correct me if I'm wrong Bologna is how I'm going to go with the name. I could be completely butchering it. I hope not. But that European making his U.S. debut later today, how do you decipher that form? On paper, I tend to not kind of I can not to give too much emphasis to, for example, this horse is coming in from France. And he's been running at the provincial tracks of Leon and Vichy now those are those tracks are obviously not on the high circuit Parisian circuit where you have a courses like longshaw and dove and shanti, now if this horse had been running it at those courses, I think I would probably give him a closer look, but in general, if they're running at the French provincial tracks, I'm not quite as impressed as I would be. Otherwise and however, you know, Chad Brown, of course, has many, many years of experience getting horses to run well in America off basically anywhere in France or Europe for that matter. So I could be underestimating the form that ballooning has shown in France, however, it's a Chad Brown. He's going to be a European import. And I think the value probably generally will lie elsewhere. All right, well you are going to go with value. Number two, okay boomer 5 to one on the morning line for trainer Todd pletcher to win a race, by the way, named for colonel Liam, a horse that Todd trained. So it would be pretty special if he could pull off the victory in this one later today. That's the top pick for Vance and race 5. We moved to race number 7, the second leg of the twins fires triple play. Again, 7 furlong sprint on the main track, Vance, how'd you see this one? My main opinion in this race is that I'm fading the heavy favorite here. Number two white a barrio at 6 to 5. Greater barrio, of course, won the Florida Derby last year. He hasn't won since and he turned in the worst performance of his career at Gulfstream in the last time in the Pegasus World Cup. So he was sitting a great trip and then just fizzled out and finished 8th and that was his first loss at Gulfstream and 5 attempts. Now, obviously the connections are probably looking for a confidence boosting win in this allowance race. However, I'm taking a somewhat jaundice view of this placement because two races back way to Mario finished a very good third in the cigar mile, which makes me wonder why they're not letting this horse back in the Gulf Stream park mile later in the card on Saturday. It could be basically they just don't want to face charge it. I can understand that, but something tells me that the connections maybe don't like what they're seeing and put them in the spot that might be below

"That's our producer Lee. That is that. Talking over the sound effects. Who cares? I'm in this race, but I want to sell him for the Derby. I don't think this race will produce it to everyone. Okay. How about the San Felipe stakes at Santa Anita, the favorite is national treasure, first start for trainer Tim yak teen after being transferred from the barn of Bob Baffert, Dale by herself. I'm going to buy him, I think the voice that go ahead, Lee. I wouldn't buy him. I think bob can still have some. So I'm going to buy the source. This is a good horse. It could be bought in the race. And he possibly could be bought for the Derby. Timmy? Well, this is I'm going to agree with Dale. I'm going to buy this one. In this race, Tim yakin has, I think it's 5 total, but four of them are formerly baffled horses and American treasure was third in the breeders cup juvenile last year. Second in the American feral last year last year. And he was in his debut this year he was third in the sham at odds on. So I think that he's going to be a horse that I think should win this race, but he's going to have competition. I mean, my butcher, this name, a jazzy, who was also from bob's barn is not with the XT, the New York bread winner, the New York horse that went for three and a half million bucks. In light of our little competition, I have to buy it, don't I? Yes. And he's one of my stable fantasy stable horses in here. And you know, he's the defending he's the juvenile champ from last year. Well, there you go, Lee again. I want to sell him in his race. But I'll buy him for a Derby prospect, because he's a real deal. And we've seen the two best two year old Phillies come back and throw a little clunkers first time back and I bought both of them. I think they're going to rebound and I think the same thing could happen here. Dale, does your decision to sell forte have anything to do with what Timmy just mentioned in the fact that you're settling cyclone mischief against him later today? 100%. That's all. I can't buy the competition. I'm buying Dell Romans later today in that fountain of youth. So Dale, good luck there. One more for you, the John battaglia memorial at turfway. Don't dismiss this race. Rich strike came out of this race last year to win the Derby. Gilmore, his first start for Brendan Walsh is the favorite in here, runner up in the el Camino real Derby with Bob Baffert last time out. Dale, what do you think? Buy or sell Gilmore. I want to buy him in

"He's got 12 other ones in his barn that he needs to sort out and try to figure out which ones he wants to represent him in The Kentucky Derby, which I'm guessing they'll be maybe a half dozen. There's a half dozen of them. He'd be the first ever trainer to have that many. I think Todd Fletcher's at 5 twice and D Wayne Lucas has had 5 ones. Nobody's running a half dozen horses in The Kentucky Derby before. And Brad Cox has got about 12 or 15 of them that might be capable of getting there. Speaking of Todd pletcher, we don't see him run maidens in grade two races very often. But he's doing that with croupy. You sent out a tweet earlier this week. Pointing out the fact that croupy has faced some really good competition, even though he's zero for 5 and that this could be a really nice spot for him this afternoon. Ran against disarming the debut, I think he's one of the better ones Steve asthma and has. I believe he's going to run next to Oakland, Steve told me, instant coffee, the winner of the lacan, classic catch who beat them two races ago ran really well to do it. And then we talked about Brad Cox. Brett Cox has ten horses in The Kentucky Derby future wager pool four. Slip Mahoney isn't one of them. But he's good. And he lost to him narrowly last time and made this monstrous move slip Mahoney narrowly lost to Tampa thrice in his start before that. If you look at the pedigree kerlin, she'll get better with age, damn side of the pedigree. She's a half sister to beautician Motown and red ruby. So the pedigrees there, the connections are there and top ledger said 9 for a long long stretch fairgrounds. I don't care if the source is the maiden or not. He deserves a chance. Yep, he certainly does, and he's in there. He's 15 to one morning line, and we'll see if he can pull off a bit of an upset there in the risen star later today. But for Joe, it's going to be number 6 angel of empire who is 8 to one on the morning line as his top pick in that race, which again would be another mild upset in this year's risen star. So just to recap, Joe, you're going to go with the 8th race at fairgrounds today. You'll take number one who is 8 to one on the morning line. In the grade three fairground stakes racing 11, you'll go with number two, two Emmys, who is three to one, and in the risen star, as we just mentioned, number 6 angel of empire, and that will round out the twins by triple play that you can bet any way you like at twins buyers dot com. Other than the pick 5, Joe, anything else from twins buyers happening today that bears bears watching? Yeah, they've got a $2500 headed in split it, promotion on the late 6 5 with that $500,000 guarantee. You mentioned it already. You're going to play that pick 5, play it onto inspires. There's a free $2500 up for grabs as a bonus of your to hit it. And then the twin spires leaderboard competition rolls on earning points along with the horses on the road to Kentucky Derby one 40 9. $100,000 in that price pool. If you haven't played already, I suggest you get in now because this is where the 50 point race is start. If you're already involved in it, keep playing $25 win bat. You earn points along with the horses. The fun competition and $100,000 split amongst the top 100 and the top two players get that dream trips to Kentucky Derby one 49 and get to sit on the set with shap and I and maybe handicap a race too. What a treat that's going to be. Joe, I appreciate the time here this morning. I want to bring you on this set one time, Mike. Oh my goodness. You know what? Promote the show. All that stuff. Yeah, but you know what they say. I mean, the whole face for radio thing. It's 100% true with me.

"To eight one range. So i don't mind taking a shop with him at that price. I just ended up defaulting to some other horses instead I have no problem with the horse. That you mentioned mir mission. I agree he ran pretty. Well asked time behind public sector. Who looks like he could be the favourite on sunday in the manila stakes at belmont park and he was kind of compromised by the slow pace of that safe conduct race to back. So i do think mir mission has some ability but i ended up going to a different horse out of that public sector as from belmont stakes week. And that's the number one moon cod. Who's actually drawn all the way on the outside which is not a great post position for this distance on the inner turf But i thought moon cod ran a lot better than it seems last time in that public sector raised He was just caught outside the entire way. That was a time when the rails were down on the tour of course and you did not want to be in that position getting caught four or five wide around the far turn and he was just didn't have any cover always out of position and still finished up decently that day. All things considered He's not a word that i had much of it affinity for early in his career but it seems like he's one of these pletcher horses that it's actually come around slowly and his maiden gulfstream to back was actually pretty nice. He didn't settle that day and still produced in nights late finished so seems like a horse that might still have some proven in just hoping that it gets better trip this time yet. Seems like a perfectly reasonable case and he certainly has improved since getting to the turkish Which you know when when todd pletcher moves to the turf it's not always simply because they can't run on the dirt might be because they will prefer deter from. This one looks to be of that type. And i would say that his stablemate restored order should probably ensure that there's at least a decent early clip and we'll see how much pressure he puts on wolfenstein ago so it looks like an honestly run race you know. I guess what i would wonder about. As far as we'll sign it goes goes is that it's going to be. They're going to be hard pressed to get a one other than on dirt for straight threes..

So I'm pretty sure that when trainer Todd pletcher and owner Vincent Viola learned that the Belmont stakes would be shortened from a mile and a half to a mile and an eighth. They were probably not to dismayed. Dr Posts next start might come in the Belmont and Soda Talk About Him to talk about the return of racing in New York and other related topics we welcome in the gate. The man who has the best seat in the House to watch Dr Post his rider the two time defending clips award winning writer Iran Ortiz Junior. Tell us about all that. He overcame in winning that race at Gulfstream. Well he John Hord. I is learning by racist Green Green. Like I'd have to stay on him and but he everything's good in the behin. He wasn't bitching horses. I gotTA using monitor be to keep their then. Golly talk was the intimidate. Then we get through then. What getting now because he was seeing the horse. And what's more comfortable for me to start going because I can ride then. Finally when he gets. Put THE HEAD IN FRONT. You just take off like he got some work. Your go no yet can be a nice sort down the road will. You've said that when he grows up a little mentally it'll help him now. What shows you that. He's not yet mature in his mind. Not You know not Betty Serious on the do can feel it when do right. We'll fill their own horses. Datum care they. They know what they're doing he's Joan hordes talent but he don't know yet what he's doing you know he's looking. He spoke from the hotel sometimes. he running away from from the horse when he go by. When went to go by you look him? He's like drifting earlier so that mainly feel he's agreement. Nothing happen you just follow. Whatever I went through you know you raised it said Anita on Memorial Day you've run at Gulfstream and Churchill and will soon be returning to New York. How difficult is it to go through the testing process at each track to be cleared to come in and race? It better for you know like that's thing. I just really like three or four times. It's not too bad for me and I'm happy because like that. I'm okay to see my family. You know after I check from other also. I'm Don T my baby so I'm glad they do. They do hopefully they keep doing it their way to how challenging has it been to learn the different procedures that each track is taking to make sure that you follow all those safety and health rules. Post Time: Fountain of Youth is leap day for Derby hopefuls
"Happy Fountain of Youth Day. Thank you thank you starting early today for so eleven. Thirty fourteen racist today so should be a good one. I don't know if people think chancellor card yet but I mean it's just stacked start to finish so we're we're gearing up for a day. How's the weather down there today? Good conditions it's great It was very breezy and on the chilly side yesterday. Obviously not Florida are rolling their eyes at US saying that it's cool but it feels different when it gets colder down in Florida will definitely say that. But it's gorgeous. Today it's going to be low. Seventies son is out a little bit less windy than yesterday as well. Let's start with the Fountain of Youth. That will be the final of the fourteen races on this Saturday program. Twelve horses are entered. There was some conversation about chance it potentially coming out because of the outside post position As of just a little bit ago I think he is still in so some decisions yet to be made but twelve horses set to go. How did you see this one? Yeah he is still and he does have until forty five minutes before the race as is the protocol for Great. It's so he's got some time There was one scratch just of the number two horse in there but This is a tough race chance. It's been really impressive. And Ultra talented and and obviously Fun Horse to watch down here but I did go with the Horse. That actually finished second to him in the Home Watch. Oh man and that is as you know on. Tv For Kelly Brian. I just thought that this course who I had not actually seen him physically before leading into that last race and he really showed me. Both in the flesh needs performance that he was the type that could handle the stroud and distance effectively. I think he's drawn well and he's going to be really tough. Obviously done this moment. It's going to take a lot of attention. Chance it as well and those are some good horses but I'm GonNa land on as seen on TV seen on. Tv Ninety two on the morning line has been extremely consistent. You mentioned the forest arts. Two wins two seconds and that runner up in the mutual macho man last time to to under pokka. Lopez here this afternoon. I'd like to spend more time talking with you about some of the other contenders but in the interest of time here this morning. Let's move on to the race. For the three year old girls we don't want to neglect the phillies The Dow is race number ten one mile on the main track. It will go right around that four o'clock eastern time. Yeah this is an exciting race. You've got tunnel shape city outside Saffy. Joseph's junior has obviously really burst onto the scene this year with the likes of math wizard and then of course potential Derby contender and Chan said and he's also got affiliate that Again is undefeated and turned out to be the first graded stakes winner for Tony. Lists and sire and she even though she's been so impressive it does kind of feel like even in this race that she still has a little something to prove. It'll be interesting I think that the race really revolves around the todd. Pletcher Philly in spices nice. I mean she was just a monster in her debut and I spoke to todd yesterday and he said that she was the phillies but they obviously really had high hopes for given the purchase price and her breathing out of the Dorsey and she not only showed up in her debut. But I watch pretty much all of her recent workouts at Palm Beach downs and I spoke to todd about this too and that she's been training for the most part with some of the really highly touted colts and his part including the point. Who was really well tipped out market analysis. Just some very talented horses. That have won first time out. And she's been training with the colts. A Lotta Sense. Kinda dwarfs inside too. She's a very very big Philly but she has a nice way of moving and they taught it said that was a way of them kind of testing. Just how good is she? And she's really responded to retest. Yeah that I start. She dominated her maiden race on January twelve. She won by twelve ran away from the field. That probably could have been more if they wanted it to be. That was at the same one mile distances. Today's Dimona del Was there a obviously? She was the favourite that day ACACIA but was a palpable buzz around spices. Nice when she walked into the paddock that day there was and you know she would not necessarily be the type of horse that I would pick out in a lineup Just face off of you know looks for a Horse. That would win first. Came out like I said. She's very big she by curl and She has kind of a long stride along next to her and I thought that she was going to win. But I was almost wondering puts. You need a race which you need to turn. And she's just so talented that she was almost kind of able to overcome. Maybe not looking like the precocious sharp I out type of winter so I thought that was really interesting as well. And and obviously this is going to be a tougher spot going right into graded stakes company but think that she is really one of the box. Office potential superstars on the undercard today. And I'm excited to see her. I also use underneath though in Second. I use five reluctant bride. Who I think is good and I like her switching to stay. She's got dirt pedigree and I spoke to Patrick the cone the other day and he said he tries a lot of his horses that he thinks are good. On the turf I F. A. Indian and sold allante being perfect examples and He says he thinks it's an easier trip. And then you switch them to dirt and that just might be where they're most comfortable and that's what he's doing with this one today who just closed so impressively in her first race. And I think that she's got some ability to talking with ACACIA. Courtney from Gulfstream Park here on the Horse Racing Radio Network Again Fountain of Youth Day Fourteen races. We have time to look at one more case you have about a minute or so. Just over that for we have to get to the next segment The Gulfstream Park Mile is race number. Twelve another big field. Eleven horses entered one mile on the main track. And this is a very interesting race gear. Mclaughlin had to including Hi Collin true. Kimber I really like hike. Second also layoff. I think he's GonNa be a big improvement for him today. And I think that it's kind of always flies under the radar is how Creek Hustle. He's actually my top picks some paddock school the other day for Vicki Foley. I think he's actually going seven furlongs. One Turn My. Oh which is what he gets today. just a side note. It's the treat to see Pegasus World Cup runner up MR freeze back. And he'll turn back and distance as well for for Dale Romans who could potentially have a big day. Yeah it could be a huge day for Dale and ACACIA. Has a very busy day ahead of her. So we'll let her go. Acacias squeezed me in this morning. I appreciate you taking a few minutes. Go enjoy the rest of the day and we'll talk soon. Thanks for being here all right. Thanks guys take care. She's the best Acacia Courtney. The little a here on the horse racing radio network do miss having her with us on the network but she's doing good things down there Gulfstream and on some of the other national. Tv
