"A great show on tap, including a hall of Famer dick towel coming up to talk about an amazing night. In college basketball across the Commonwealth of Kentucky both in Louisville in Lexington. We have a big one tonight in Knoxville's number one team goes back onto the court in about three and a half hours. We have plenty to do. But let's start with some headlines right now on this Wednesday afternoon. Berry Odem is frustrated with SEC coaches trying to poach Missouri seniors, and he has some stinging comments for one coach in particular who resides in. Knoxville, Tennessee, I wonder who we talking about. Meanwhile, Florida DC. Todd Grantham interviews for the Bengals DC job. We saw the similar situation with the Kentucky coach leaving. Now. We'll Todd Grantham make another move. You all should LSU's game winning tip in Kentucky's big battle last night. Have counted? Why not? It was good. Wasn't it? Oh, there may be some conversation about that. What do you think? This is how it ended in Rupp. We'll get dick five tells opinion in was that goaltending offensively. Not reviewable. I don't know could have been. Doesn't matter. Now. LSU wins. What about LSU football last-second tip in Kentucky never seen that before? That was a long time ago. I was quite a win. The miracle. Meanwhile, it just means more how the SEC built itself into a great basketball league. This is in the ethnic. Greg Sankey gets a lot of credit for that. And baseball is underway this weekend and LSU baseball is back with Scott high expectations. They are numerous no number one. Yeah. Eight SEC teams in the top twenty. Why does anyone even bother when anyone other than the SEC? I mean. Anyway, we are glad you're here on this Wednesday afternoon, and we have a lot to do today. And as I mentioned dick by towel among the guests. It was announced yesterday the Dickie v would get the lifetime achievement award at the sports Emmys in late may in New York, and we'll talk to him about that coming up here. Shortly to listening to the Paul finebaum show podcast what a pleasure when when I heard yesterday that our next guest was going to be a word of the lifetime achievement word award by the sports Emmys in New York, and may I just started thinking back on my own personal relationship with him meeting him for the first time and here was a legend in the game already. Just being nice to somebody that no one had really ever heard of. And that's really been the story of his entire career. And what an honor it is to welcome him to our program. Dick vitelle. Thank you very much. Congratulations. I know many of Senate, but it is an amazing honor that you were given. And we'll. Continue to be lauded until the the event in New York. Good afternoon. Well, thanks love. Paul really, nice you. Yeah. We go back a long way remember discussing many thing with you. And I tell you to be a starter because he really had that a -bility to communicate in Tavoy for an opinion as far as the award goes that award belongs to everybody at ESPN. Because really when I think about it and pull always tell a friend of mine today. Larry, wait, a buddy of my we're having lunch. I said, you know, when I started ESPN Beck in nineteen seventy nine all I ever wanted to do was get another gig. I would walk into our trail, and we had a trail in the big campus that existed and Ellen Beckwith who's in charge of a Siamese at the time. I'd say L give me some games giving some giving you two three four we company with you. What I said not enough. I mean, it was a believable. And it really saved me in a way because you know, I was really down can be. I mean, I I was so depressed. My career was exploding..

"I get it Missouri fans ticked about the pass. Interference penalty Kentucky gets one more chance. They win. The reality is Kentucky control that second half. I'm in Missouri. Didn't have a single I down in the second half a single I down on offense. I'm awful fading. Drew? Lock. I I mean a hundred and sixty five passing yards last week whenever he plays. Somebody worth a damn. He's not worth a damn I o and nine now in his career against op twenty five teams last I checked Florida still in the top twenty five give me the gainers here. And I don't know if you have it handy, but since the numbers didn't change last week because drew lock no touchdowns and no interceptions. You gave out this stat last week regarding drew lock against you know, good teams that against bad teams. I don't know if you have that handy at you probably had it in last week's newsletter. But if you do I'd love to hear that stat again. Yeah. Against you know, FCS team 'cause Missouri plays a lot of them against group of five teams against bad power five teams power five teams that don't go to bowl game sixty four touchdowns in his career nine interceptions. So against bad teams, sixty four nine ratio against good teams. And my only qualify for a good team. They go to a bowl game there in the power five so power five bowl teams. Drew lock in his career twenty one touchdowns. Twenty eight interceptions. Twenty one twenty eight show against good teams. I twenty one twenty eight ratio against good teams sixty four nine ratio against bad teams. I just don't trust your lock. I that was one of my main things coming in the season. It's played out yet again against bad teams. There looked like all world leaders against good ones. They're not. Well, correct me if I'm wrong here, Brad. But Florida's got pretty her defense. Don't they? I can get pressure on the quarterback. And I get Todd Grantham kind of feast or Fanta, you know, defeat famine there as far as the defense coordinator for Florida. But yeah, I would say this is one of the better defenses Missouri is gonna play this year. So I just trust Florida to go in and get the W in Florida should have a little bit of revenge, and I get a new coaching staff and whatnot. But Missouri absolutely there as Florida last year, I gotta think at least from a player aspect, and they'd wanna get even with the Tigers. And also to hear I think having a guy like Dan Mullen helps because I think last year with somebody like Jim mcelwain who didn't really have a whole lot of control over this program. I would not take Ford off mcelwain was still the guy here. But with Dan Mullen, a proven head coach guy that I mean, look when you go to Mississippi State, you have a lot of tough setbacks because you're there in the SEC west so you develop that skill set for helping players overcome. Those bad losses..

"They want this to be a new gator team with starting a new legacy and. And I think that they're believing in themselves are believing in the coaching staff, and if they followed their plan to win that they're going to be successful. And I think it has started with the mindset that Dan wanted to imprint on on these players and they finally bought in. And I think they're they're on the other side this week ago. And like everyone was critical of Georgia had done or not done against LSU awfully always a mystery. What's your best guess on? What curvy has been working on and his staff? Offense. A couple of things I think on the defense. Nice stopping the run on the offensive side being able to handle pressure because they there's eleven times LSU brought pressure against Georgia and on those eleven place Jake from keep you are was one group was one that you can't win that way. And guess what? You don't Florida likes to do is bring pressure. Todd Grantham his IMO and what he's done. So well this year is hill disguise in he'll play off a little bit. But then when you're not expecting he's bringing pressure. And when he finds a weakness he attacks he attacks attacks he attacks, and that is something that George is gonna have to figure out because there's going to be pressured. They're going to Florida is going to be bringing corners. They're going to be bringing safety are going to bring a linebackers and Jake from going gonna have to be able to read recognize offense lines going to have to protect and then you're gonna win on the outside. And I think it's gonna come down to a lot of the big plays on the outside. Ridley Meco Hartman coming up with big place because floor. Trust their corners. They're gonna put them on an island, truly an island and say we trust you. You're good out. There may Jake from a perfect throw to beat us. Tim Tiba with chimp all week long on this program. There's been so much conversation about next week with Alabama and LSU most of it about Devon white. And one thing I always liked to do is bring every imaginable Shah of the story. Most people have have said the SEC was really not in a position to do anything, bad caller. Good call. But but I I was talking to you earlier. And I was really impressed with your passion for what you would like to have seen happen this week. First of all, I think the rule is ridiculous. I think it's it is it's stupid. It's it's absolutely stupid that you're gonna take. Football players in violent game. And you're going to say that all these calls are the same. If I touch my face vast touch your face masks in its head to head, and he he was trying to pull off you can very clearly see he's trying to pull off heat. It wasn't trying to demolish Nick FitzGerald, he could have but he wasn't trying to. And I think we have to be able to sit back and Sarah. You know the rules. Not perfect. We need to look at intent. We need to look at a lot more things in this rule. But then even if there is a penalty, we can't say, okay, Devon, white. You're the best player in LSU. It's not even close probably the best linebacker in the country. But you're not gonna play in the biggest game of your season that your coach is probably going to be defined for that all their coaching staff. They get paid for games. Like this all the money that they make everything you're taking their best player away from the Alabama LSU game. And I think he's probably the second best player on the field. I think two is the best. And I think Devon whites the second best and you're saying LSU, you're. Being your best because he touched his face mass against Nick FitzGerald, when he's trying to pull off when you really sit back and you look at it..

"You didn't like that. Well, the frapp rose when the down twenty three. No, I agree, especially, I mean, it's vandy you're supposed to beat them by three scores. It was. And did you see their specialists were doing like a fake kneel down on the sidelines after? Yeah, that was weird. Yeah. I know. Built. I exactly when vandy earlier this early you see team, that's true, but like Derek Mason like fighting like that, it's like, oh, yeah, Derrick Mason? Yeah. I mean, he was screaming at Todd Grantham and Dan Mullen like, fuck you, fuck you, fuck you. I wanted to see him actually fight. The crazy thing that hit wasn't that bad by three years ago, that's on a penalty. I mean, it's a pretty bad that I mean they're trying to take that out the cry, but I don't know what they're mad about being on the field, checking on them in. Yeah, that game ended in horrific fashion for me with the I had that actually. So basically I had Vanderbilt nine and a half and Florida had the ball like third and one at maybe the thirty. So again, one yard the game was over. There's no timeouts for Vanderbilt, but they got stopped and then kicked a field goal in covered the same exact thing happened in the pros with who was it Carolina in Washington washing? No, no, no, no, no, Atlanta and all land. The box? Yeah. I had bucks plus, I think three it was like they're losing and they in Atlanta had third and like half an inch, and they got stuffed and then kicked a field goal. I, I got to witness that bad beat up front like he and Dan, which videos were funny. Yeah, I think they pose Maria. That was real. Yeah. Yeah. You don't get that other places. No, that was carnage. Luckily, I had a big comeback. I didn't win. Yes in the NFL, but whatever. How did you get who'd you lose yesterday? Bad. Did you get beat his bad yesterday as any of those mentioned, but we'll that one was bad for the pats? The pats was bad. I thought Broncos score at the end. You bet on the Red Sox? No. What other did I lose? Oh, so one, the Redskins you've got the Redskins lost that fell cans game. I forget the others. Oh, I pushed the Vikings and I lost is somebody I lost. Oh, it was kinda bad. I got mad at Scott Hanson..

"For LSU to have upset win over Georgia today at two thirty what zealous you have to do? I know I've got to protect football. We know that sounds like coach speak with it. That's the truth. Get a couple of turnovers. They got us play specialties big return that that's one thing that's been lacking for this LSU team. They brought in Greg McMahon from the saints after they let him go. And he's had an impact on the special teams unit recruited, coal, Tracy, etc. But where's the big play? The big return. Maybe it's a trick. We'll see that'll be I think a defining moment in this game of L shoes able to pop off along return. Whether it's the punt returner kick return, maybe a trick play that could be the difference for LSU against Georgia force a turnover. Jake Frahm maybe get if you get in to throw you one fumble. What have you you? You're going to need something to beat this Georgia team, even her Iran if you're playing even if the turnover ratios even Georgia wins this game. Well, here's the thing. You gotta play the win. You can't play them that you know, what I mean? So in that at all costs so that's on special teams offense. And so if you have an opportunity to make a pick go for the pick versus back in the ball, though, if you have an opportunity for a punt return. You know, and it may be a little bit difficult. If you will like the guy maybe ten yards in front of you versus twenty in front of you, maybe take that return to go man at four three speed was on display. Just now you went to right across the street to the grocery store to grab some food. He made it right on time. I'm gonna tell you it's really four three nine. It wasn't really four three six with. I'm used to. All right, man. You know, the sun's out a little bit and people walking around a little bit side dodge a couple of cars and stuff so doing Heisman Trophy poses and stuff. And it was great. You're breaking some ankles. Oh, man. But the one thing I am disappointed about they don't sell vitamin water over there. I got your PowerAde that works that works. Ray lacomb what's going on? Ray you're on tiger tailgating here on wwl. Yeah. Little on it. I mean back and. When moral which catching the ball and feel I still think. Lax discipline and practice skill. I'm not looking forward yard. I don't know if that's discipline. I think that they just got beat last week. Really good by Florida pass rush. That defense that Todd Grantham put together is incredibly quick if you go back and watch Todd Grantham in general, his MO, even when he goes back at Georgia. He likes he likes to get after the passer with speedy guys undersized, but speedy. Well, the thing about it man is they were ready to play, you know, Florida was ready to play defensively, especially so and they came out and they play like that. So that that showed a lot. You gotta be ready to play Florida or Georgia, and we weren't ready last week. I kind of disagree with you. I think that at times Florida's seemed a little bit more eager in certain situations. But ultimately we had every opportunity to win that game. We were in that game until the very end. So it wasn't like we got fat out beat Florida made those additional plays that we did not make Ray I didn't see a an energy level dip or anything like that. That's not right. When you say they're not ready to play. I talked about their practice, ability, etc. I just don't I don't think you're reading this one, right? Because the energy was there for LSU all week long. I think so I trust I now trust coach, oh, certainly have his team prepared. He's shown you weekend and week out that he has appeared. Look, we just gotta admit that Florida out executed LSU pivotal moments of the game. That's the way. And that's the way it comes down in the SEC. That's what happens in the southeastern conference teams are so equally balanced with talent. I mean everywhere I mean, sometimes you you went up against a team. That's just on fire that day. They may not play the same way this week. Last week. So it's once again, that's what makes you you. Great is when you know when you can overcome those that type of game or that type of play or that quarter or whatever it is that half if you can you can make the plays. And that will that's what coaches talk about all the time. We have to make the plays when they come to us. So we didn't make all of the plays last week when they came to us, and they did which ended up being a loss. Fail issue. Tired tiger tailgate here? Randall and applause, you're up next. You can jump in the conversation as.

"Express be the radius times always ready and Tom getting ready to be part of the broadcast from our early in the afternoon, actually noon eastern Florida, going Vanderbilt, Tom. Thanks. This used to be a game after the Georgia game. It's a game that if you go back through history, Florida has always struggled in Nashville. Any reason if you're gator fan to be concerned tomorrow. I would hope not. I think if you're a gator fan right now, you see the bigger picture, you see a light at the end of the tunnel, but maybe you didn't see three weeks ago. And if you're paying attention to the final score of the Vanderbilt a Georgia game, you'd be sorely mistaken. That was a game where if you watch the tape, there was a few plays here and there that dramatically changed with the final score would have been. I'm not saying that Vanderbilt by any means would have won that football game, but Vanderbilt moved the ball up and down the field on Georgia's defense, and they struggled in the red area. They weren't able to punch the ball in on some third and fourth in shorts that would have changed the entire momentum of the game. So if you're a Florida fan, do you need to take Vanderbilt seriously? Absolutely. And I think you need to because moreover, this is a Vanderbilt team that for whatever reason, we just got meeting done meeting with Derek Mason. Their kids get up to play Florida. And I think Florida will acknowledge recognize that and be prepared for it as well. Let me get just your thought on Florida today because you know, after that really difficult game against Kentucky, the the old Mullen magic is back. It is, but I would almost give more of the credit to what they've been able to establish on Defense. Paul, I think Todd Grantham has realized that with the pieces of the puzzle that they inherited and the type of player that they have that they needed to become a pressure team and they needed to find out who their best eleven were in. If that meant giving up some size, maybe giving up some beef on the interior particularly on the defensive front because that's not what this Florida team is. They've been that in the past, but not this one. They've realized that we are going to be a cover one or covers zero all out pressure team and Todd Grantham. The defensive coordinator is not concerned with down down a distance. He is not concerned with area of the field. That's how they beat Mississippi State on the road. That's how they created havoc for for LSU. And now all of a sudden the kids are buying in from Dan Mullins perspective on the offensive side of the ball. I think he's doing a wonderful job masking deficiencies and essentially strings, and he's doing it through scheme, not asking fleet bay Franks to do what he's not capable of. Doing getting the ball into the hands of the perimeter people and let them do the rest. This hasn't been a flashy offense. It's a ball control. Don't make a critical air at a critical time type of offense. They overcame the interception in the end zone, which is a bone head throw by Felipe a French to come out of the second of the halftime to start the third quarter, and then they recovered from it. So they seem to understand how to deal with adversity. We're gonna find out now with a lot of pats on the back over the last three weeks, how well this Florida team can deal with success because people are talking about him. Now. Talking to Tom Lugar Bill. He's in Nashville to do the game tomorrow between Vanderbilt and Florida. I do under direct you to Baton Rouge, Tom. And I, I mean, you've got an LX team coming off of a very difficult loss Georgia team that really some people are underwhelmed by in spite of the rankings in spite of everything else, your assessment of Georgia. I. Two things stand out to me and in our scouting preview piece. The one I put together for PM.

"You know, then we get out there on the field and and you know, the guy started to see themselves improving football players, and you know, we, we come out and we have a tough loss to Kentucky early. And I, I don't know. They knew how to react to that or or they thought, you know, okay. Oh, we lost to Kentucky. What's going on. You know, as you everybody sees now and I knew go into play him and that's an excellent Kentucky football team for this year. But you go turn on the practice me and say, here's us not executing a practice. Here's us not not living up to the standard. Here's us not playing at the highest level at practice, and then here's the same playing a game and. Guys, tell me how it looks different and it didn't. And so all of a sudden, you know, then they start realizing, okay, now I understand. Now why you're honest about every day, every detail of practice in the strain and the effort in which we have to play with, you know, and all of a sudden they start practicing better. They start practicing harder. The effort increases in our performance increases. And so I, I think it's, you know these guys when you when you can show them physically show them the gains they're making improvements. They're making. It helps them buy into what we're doing in the future. The decision to bring Todd Grantham with you from from starkville had been there for a year and had some success and you get this job. And he's known throughout the SEC really throughout the country is a guy who's an aggressive coach and likes to mix it up, likes to try to confuse the offensive line, but really gets his players to buy in and play with kind of a chip on their shoulder. He talked about what he's brought to the table when and that defense that that seems right now to be planned with a with a ton of competence. Actually, you know, I mean, it wasn't even a consideration for me when I got here. I mean, I just called, I said, hey, you know what I mean? Unless you unless you're hitting the, you know you, you're, you're getting the invite to come to Florida. You know, I mean, that's not even a discussion unless you get named head coach at Mississippi State, and you tell me what you need to come here, and I'm gonna bring a here. But Todd, I think we have very similar philosophy. I think you know, I wanna fast physical aggressive defense and he's going to do that. He's going to attack and get off, says out of their comfort zone, not going to be shy about coming after you and politically and key moments of the game and and really put pressure on. He's going to try to win. On defense, and I love that aggressive mindset that that he brings. He does a great job motivating and holding players accountable out there on the field. And you know, one thing I think that that though that that is the most important to me is that people don't always see as we're very sound defensively, you know, I mean, now I am by by sound when you talk to them, we'll take some chances, but we, you know, I mean, it's not a guy that's just going, hey, let's just roll up this blitz and see what happens. You know, we're, we're when we roll out and we come after you..

"Sec west and not having certain advantages like save alabama albert in lsu it's tough for everybody and the fact that historically mississippi state has had some down chunks of years and he was able to have the success both in developing specific talents like dak prescott and now nick fitzgerald's and winning games against big teams and now he goes home to a place or home is relative but he goes back to florida where he had so much success offensively as the coordinator ferber meyer knows that to rain is should be able to navigate s an enormous enormous program and you would assume has some sort of experience in knowing temperament stuff i think it's a very very good higher even though florida swum for the fence with chip kelly who ultimately wasn't to fit with the sort of magnifying glass that exists in gainesville pure huge program but i i think it's a very very good higher and his assistant hires now todd grantham coming with them from mississippi state defensive coordinator is known so i i am i would be very happy if i were a florida fan you know the socks are knocked off yacht floored because it's been a long rumor but i i think it should be satisfying does this we were going to get a little thirteen grantham thirteen gainesville i think that's the think that's what's happened to ask now i look at smart higher he wanted the job and somebody out there road it forgive me for not properly citing it but the point of the article was look if he can fix the quarterback situation echoes an awful long way um an awful long way florida has been dominated so much by defense in recent years if you can fix a quarterback situation inject a little life into that program it doesn't need to be the sexiest higher and the world to just needs to be functional and i think that's what the since i like the move.

"Really has them in its todd grantham the defensive coordinator for mississippi state is the only person of the motions they're very very big emotions you ahmed are is i didn't know blitz was in a motion but okay unsee on his looks good warren todd how are you feeling blance blitzing is what you do that's pretty accurate where should yaoming it's tell men show emotions okay you know men their unstable you know they just get so emotional that everything and todd grantham he's he's a man with a lot of feelings and right conohere how here though he'll be an amazing president he would be just day three a mob owls are all backed up soon launch all the dukes wants all them this is the most damning thing okay because they larry delaware it's bad enough lien denmark ib bows when you get into this situation where there is a a believe what what was was third in thirteen was third it was neither it was third in fifteen there were thirty one seconds left in the game and alabama had the ball and its own forty three said they were not in position to kick a field goal to win the game and the obviously had a long way to go to either get into that position or keep the drive going alabama lines up they are uh the probably gonna pass to calvin ridley now this is just a guess because his played never happened okay blood calvin ridley pretty much bill that alabama on any third and longer second along situation that they were fakes right well it's also good guess because they completed ten passes and five of them went to calvin rib correct pretty much their best offense of tool in the passing game is calvin ridley the balls go to him a mississippi state lines up their shown blitz all right that they're they're going to bring heat.

"There there will be fund moments just because shape patterson does have that much talent and our final team in the sec west the other mississippi team mississippi state now how dare you dave either isis sasid i'm sorry hype i mean no disrespect to the bulldogs they've got nick fitzgerald a quarterback he is six five to thirty he's a mac truck back there um fred ross has gone the rest of the wide receiving corps is back shut out to the fredge occasion that's right the line has to replace three starters i feel very confident that nick fitzgerald we'll take it upon himself to do some damage in the sec and find ways to win games for mississippi state i'm not sure what their ceiling is you might only be a six and sixteen this year because it's tough schedule by it i am oddly excited to see what they can put out in the field this year they've and they're a little bit of a mystery just because they recruit a lot of junior college guys who are going to help out with positional needs on both offense at events were particularly defense where they took a definitive step back and shout out dan mullin his ability to hire defence of coordinators it's many ds jeff collins and peter surman didn't work out made his way to level but todd grantham makes his way to what feels like the his seventh team and three here straight up a straight up trade at the deadline peter chairman two louisville murder lol ville depaul point of view yep in exchange for todd grantham dave recruited really well upfront they have legitimate bluechip star power up front which is something you always like to see in the second person uh in the back end it's sort of an unknown quality because of the the jc guys coming and there are only okay last year need to improve back there especially since quarterback play will be better this year schedules y'all schedules rough but.

"But i coherence about the new coordinators brand and wimbledon has promised on on on on on on a not don't don't no k weight i could definitely do i've got i know you could i've got something in the oven i've got something in the oven it needs another day okay anyway stay tuned about to pick them poll also end of the week the shirts sales clothes so as you're interested or to salvageable dot com slash store by your shirts okay okay finally or sent follow us on facebook on twitter on instagram all of those fun places dale let's talk some essy's all right i am up i'm yell at it to the mic because we're talking sec what are your general takeaways for the sec in 2017 mr rubinstein lot of new coordinators lot of returning quarterbacks and the top looks the same the bottom could shift around a little bit and the middle should be a mess in a good way because there's a lot of uncertainty surrounding would even just the west if you just look at the west the new coordinators obviously highlighted by our our dear friend paul roads taking over the defence anarchy so proud yeah so you have the search of the coaching situation generate ole omiss and fill longo's new offense coordinator comes from sam houston state um chip lenzi takes over in auburn from arizona state a short trip they're mack canada of course to lsu todd grantham to mississippi state alabama loses both lane kiffan and hence chiefs her keysan and they hire a patriots assisted and brian debacle so i think the uncertainty surrounding scheme surrounding quarterback play surrounding personnel and how that all fits with these new coaches i think that's pretty interesting to me yeah there there are no teams in the sec that i'd consider a stinker.

"Every quarterback is different book you've worked with a two of the best sec quarterbacks in recent history tim tibo and indect prescott too how do you compare if it's even possible uh compare and contrast to those two with what you have now it's just hard to compare amal you know i mean a they're all such differed players but you know i to me all of them are very successful quarterbacks uh you know have the opportunity to be group become great players nick has as the opportunity to become just as good a player as those other two and you know i it just comes down to his work ethic and what he does on a daily basis within his development and you know i know people as a he has the talent to make the special place just like those other guys do did but you know the quarterback development has more as is a lot more than just making a special play every once in awhile it's the it's kind of doing a lot of the unspectacular things that make you a great quarterback talking to dan molin a little bit of a shift on defense with todd grantham no certainly a unit to you're you're looking and counting on give us a progress report how's it going so far but i like what i'm seeing you know untied on understands sheet at one of the things it's important to me is developing depth getting a lot of different players you have to be ready to play a lot of different guys in the southeastern conference and just keep your fresh and get you through the year i you know i really like what i've seen out of our defense so far we got a really young unit on that side of the ball and there's only three seniors on the.
