"We've done this a couple of times. They will do it all week and we're heading to Nashville, where Bryce Smith from the Vanderbilt hustler joins us. Vanderbilt opens a season or earlier than everyone else at Hawaii, Bryce, thank you for the time, great to have you on. So what's it been like getting ready for this football season as a sports editor? Yeah, thanks for having me on Paul. Definitely interesting this year for Vanderbilt as you mentioned to start out in week zero and go out to Honolulu for our opener. I think really interesting to go into year two of Clark Lee, obviously it's been a pretty big rebuild over the last few seasons, but now that Lee has one season under his belt, I think that there's a lot of fans and alumni excited to see kind of where he takes the program this season. Yeah, Bryce, I mean, this is literally your program that disappeared off the face of the earth other than for people like you who follow Vanderbilt closely. Last year there were some signs of pull up, but some what reason is there to believe that this year is going to be marginally or significantly better? Yeah, so I think last year you can kind of look at the season in two separate parts. So first 6 games of the year, Vanderbilt started Ken seals and also kind of mix in a little bit of mic right. Two varying degrees of success, obviously they won two games in that first 6 stretch, but they also lost to east Tennessee state. They lost to Georgia. 62 to zero and they lost to Florida 42 to zero. So not great to start off the year. And then halfway through the year at South Carolina, Mike Wright got the start from there on out. And for the rest of the season, I think Vanderbilt was a lot more competitive and as you mentioned really showed some signs of life. With right under center, the average about 6 points more per game, which is almost a touchdown, so that's a pretty significant difference. So I think if you're looking at signs of hope for this season, Clark Lee at SEC media days a couple of weeks ago has already named Mike red as the starter. So kind of having that continuity having the locker room understand who the QB one is from the jump in someone like Mike Wright, who was able to kind of rally the troops and be able to give Vanderbilt a little bit more of a punching chance throughout the back half of last season. I think that that has Vanderbilt fans and coaches excited. And Bryce, I think it's important to have moments. I'll never forget four or 5 years ago. We did our show from Vanderbilt when Alabama was there. And there was a genuine general feeling that maybe maybe, maybe this could be the year and then it all disappeared and we know what's happened since then because there was a there was a lot of quarterback issues and it grew into war. So today, you look at this schedule, Hawaii is not a great opponent. I'm just doing some math here. You should be able to get by Hawaii, then you have a law and then you have a legitimately big weekend with wake forest, the ACC team last year that everybody was raving about. We don't know about the quarterback situation, whatever it is, their star quarterback. But what does Hawaii look like from a Vanderbilt standpoint and how winnable is this game? I think Vanderbilt may be a favorite. Yes, the Vanderbilt is favored. They had a lot of off season turbulence. You could say with, I believe, the state legislator getting involved in terms of the firing of Todd Graham. So they've had a lot of turnover out there. I know just making the trip itself for this week zero game is something that's required a lot of logistics for the vanity team. But I think it's a game that they should handle comfortably. And like you mentioned, there really is an opportunity at the beginning of the season here to kind of get on a roll. You open up with why you get to Elon for your home opener and then as you mentioned Sam Hartman, the star quarterback for wake forest, out indefinitely. So we'll see what happens there. So there's a real chance, I think, and excitement to kind of start off with some momentum. And coupled with that, something Clark Lee is mentioned, a lot of this preseason is really getting off to a fast start after that 23 embarrassment that happened in last year's home opener in the first game of his coaching career. Against east Tennessee state. So I think a couple that all together, and you have a chance for vandy to kind of get off on the right foot and see where things go from there. You mentioned the offense. You need a defense too. Obviously. What are you saying? What are you sensing? What are you seeing? Yeah, so I think the biggest thing on defense is really continuity. There's not a lot of star players. Obviously, on that side of the ball, but there weren't last year either. And so it was a really young defense. They brought in a transfer from Clemson, Kane Patterson, to kind of to kind of anchor that linebacker position, as well as his brother, who they recruited in their freshman class. And then I think really the biggest loss will be kind of in the personnel department. The defensive coordinator, Clark Lee's handpicked coordinator for his first year, Jesse minster has moved on to Michigan. So he's tabbed former Virginia defensive coordinator, Nick Hal to kind of lead that unit, but the schemes should be similar, as I mentioned, the players have all been in the system. Obviously, leads the defensive guy. So he has his input there. He's been in the system, or they've been in the system rather for two years now. So I think really just kind of looking to have a better understanding of the tactics and adjustments that need to be made as they go through their SEC schedule.

"I think they're probably done. Yeah, I mean, there's still this transformation committee, which is in the process of revolutionizing college athletics. It's a great gesture. I'm afraid it's way too late to really make any meaningful impact other than press conferences where administrators get to stand up and pat themselves on the back. But ultimately, I think that that part of the game is over. I wonder if there won't be two separate leagues someday, a non NCAA and maybe an NCAA college league and something like that. I think that's entirely possible. Hey, thanks for the call. Jeffrey is in Hawaii. Hello, Jeffrey. Hello, mister pine, bob. How are you? Pleasure to hear from you. Thank you. Question, I believed in Hawaii for about ten years and I followed the football team and the sports university of Hawaii this last year, they kind of forced out that former ASU coach Todd Graham. I don't know if you heard about it. The players kind of did a little mutiny and it was wasn't a good scene. And there are all these issues everywhere that yeah, but anyway, there are always talking at UH about this culture that it's hard for a mainland guide to come in here and adapt to the culture of Hawaii and they do this with all their sports basketball and I don't really I don't really see it. I don't see that isn't football football once you get on the field and all this other stuff about acclimating there's other there's other schools in the country that also are supposedly harder for an outsider to come into what you're feeling on that. Is that a real thing or is it an excuse or what would you think of that? Well, I've been to two football games in Hawaii and I other than the scenery. It seemed the same to me. I think it's a, I would defer to people that live there and I certainly understand the cultural differences, but I don't think there's any difference between going coaching and Honolulu versus somebody who grew up in West Virginia and spent most of his life in the Midwest going down to Baton Rouge and winning a national championship or something like that. I think with all due respect to Hawaii, I think going to I think going to Baton Rouge is a totally different totally more difficult culture than going into Hawaii. Right, right. And it almost seems like they eliminate 90 percent of their potential candidates because they don't have some sort of a tie, either high school or grew up here or went to school here and I don't know, I just wanted another opinion on that. I will say too and obviously you've had successful coaches out there, but I think the biggest issue for Hawaii is keeping players there as opposed to going to USC or Alabama to be a star quarterback or elsewhere. And I don't think that's going to be very easy. If you had somebody who's part of the culture, is that going to keep tongue of eye lower from leaving? No, absolutely not. Young players are going where the action is right now. Right. Well, Hawaii will open at home against Vanderbilt this year. The aloha stadium was condemned so they put up a sort of temporary on campus. Oh, really? Stadium, yes. It's only got 15,000 seats. I think they're going to expand. Yeah. So what would you I mean, I'm not asking for a prediction, but Hawaii's picked last in their division in the mountain west. I don't know what Vanderbilt is. What do you see? Jeffrey, they're picked last and its division as well. I think it's a critical game for Vanderbilt because they don't have many chances to win this year. And considering that Clark recently said that he's trying to become one of the best programs in the country. They better beat Hawaii. That's a must win game for the commodores. Yeah. Okay. Well, thank you very much for talking to me about that. Yes. So who you got in that game? I think Vanderbilt should win that game. They did Vanderbilt beat last year in one of those they beat somebody way out west. I can't remember. Yeah, maybe Colorado state. But yeah, of course, Vanderbilt does not have many opportunities. So that's week zero big game. And it doesn't sound like Hawaii is in very good shape at all. Lucas is in Ohio. Hello, Lucas. Hey, how you doing, Paul? Lucas, thank you. We're doing great. Good, hey. I'm actually calling here as a Notre-Dame fan out of Ohio. Essentially my question is, I want Notre-Dame to get to the Big Ten. I want these mega conferences to happen. It'll help the college football playoff. But essentially, what it comes down to is I would love to see the SEC schools come up and play up north in the Big Ten Conference late in the season when it's cold. I think this would be awesome for the game. The pros do it. You got to go up to Lambeau, late in the season, play in the snow. And I would be curious as to what your take is on that happening once all this stuff rolls out. So let me take it from there. Yeah, I mean, I would love to see that Lucas in a playoff. I can't see any reason to see that during regular season. I mean, they're used to be a window in November because I've been to a number of games in November in South Bend and in State College where you would have these great intersectional games. And yeah, it was always more challenging for a southern team to go have to play those games. But you're never going to see that again. It makes no, it makes no sense whatsoever to play those games outside of the beginning. But yeah, I think it would make a fascinating aspect to an expanded playoff to have first and second round home games, which was what the original plan was. It got shot down by the three conferences who needed it the most. And I mean, can you imagine a Clemson Michigan game in Ann Arbor or something like that? I think it would be great for the sport and the sport needs things like that as opposed to the sterile stadiums that we currently have, the biggest games of the year in and don't forget this year, the national championship game is in the ram stadium in California. I went to that game four years ago in Santa Clara and I've never been to a worse sporting event in terms of a lack of interest in the actual event where we were. Thanks for the call. Bill is in Napa was not too far from where that game was. Hey Bill guard ahead. I remember that game. It was at the sterile Levi stadium. I remember that game was talking about these. I

So as to why the talent might not be producing, it's quite simple. Women weaken legs. And as for Herman the ship, I'm just visually thinking of a GIF where the Titanic's going down and he's just shoving staff members overboard and that's what's transpired here. He has definitely not been shot. Everybody loves is not what you think he is. Yeah, he's definitely not been shy about throwing guys in front of the bus. To get them chewed up and spit out as a result. So Arizona state a team to your point that took massive amounts of money under the total and a team that appears to be fracturing at the seams. We'll see if Florida transfer Emory Jones can be the difference maker there. But there you have it. 7 relevant teams as far as the PAC 12 is concerned with a little bonus breakdown of my beloved Oregon state beavers, but pain before we get out of Dodge and put a bow on the pack 12. If you want to hear any more of the breakdown, there's about 15 minutes of it. It'll be timestamped above, but going over 8 and a half -40 for a team that we have favored in every single game. Is really interesting to me. There's very few times you're going to have that ability. And I know, again, perception might be a little bit different when you hear public folks talking about making college football playoff run. I don't necessarily believe that to be the case. We just have to get 9 wins here. And it's shocking that you have that ability. It's at FanDuel as Todd alluded to the link in the description, click that, sign up, bet Utah over 8 and a half. "I can't say I disagree with it. Is clay Hilton because of all the guys on here with the exception probably of Jim Mora and Jerry kill. We probably know the most about clay helton. Now he's in a very different job in a very different place. I don't know. Were you tempted to give him worse than us? No, because you know, sometimes the way people talk about play health and you were thinking he went like 12 and 40 at USC. You know, he did win a rose bowl. Things went south from there. And this isn't going to be USC. You know, I'm not ruling out the possibility that he has some success at Georgia southern. I don't think I realize this. Georgia southern has a very proud football tradition going back to their FCS days. I think people realize that they know the legend, you know, I hear it a lot whenever I mention shellenberger, hey, shouldn't our cross will be in there. And the right hand should be in there. They fire coaches there. They're not going to minor bowl games or 7 and it's not good enough there. The guy they just fired went ten and three a couple years ago, Chad lunsford. So I think the bar that clay Alton's gonna have to hit is like the sun belt version of what the bar he was gonna have to hit at USC and I think that's gonna be hard to do. Of all the coaches in the group of 5, give me two that you're very fascinated to see how they do. Don't say more head. One is Stan drayton. Who, if you follow college football, you know him as a very successful running backs coach for a very long time, one of the most coaching Ezekiel Elliott at Ohio State, bijan Robinson now. He was Brian Westbrook's coach at Villanova and but, you know, I think, has remained to how many running back coaches become household names. Not really, right? So he's getting a shot at temple, which you talk about, you know, hires that felt doomed from the start, rod Kerry did not impress anybody. He didn't make a very long he had some ties he, like I said, he went to college in Pennsylvania, he coached a villain over that was a long time ago. I'm just curious to see how he does. Now he has a shot running a program and a program that's, you know, in the AAC and has had recent success, so I'm curious on that one. I think the most, this is totally gone under the radar, but what happened at Hawaii with Todd Graham? Being run out of there. And then June Jones bowed out of the coaching search. So now you got Timmy after a lobby after lobbying for the job and then getting offered it, getting offered a very unrealistic set of circumstances. Who he could hire as assistant coaches? I remembering that right? Yeah, I mean that right. There was just a lot of things that were kind of unrealistic for him to take the job and under those circumstances, and then it became very public that he talked about it and they talked about it in ways that usually don't happen and then Timmy Chang was a great player there. Great player 4 June Jones. Ended up getting the job. Yeah, I mean, if you're a college football fan, like maybe 35 years or older, you remember Jimmy Chang. He was a legend there. He was putting up, I mean, now there's a lot of quarterbacks that hit those kind of numbers, but he was putting up insane passing numbers every year in that offense. And so I think it made a lot of sense for them to bring him in, you know, the fan base, the actually, even more than the fan base, the community, the former players. Everybody very fractured from the Todd Graham experiment. And so of course you're gonna unite behind Timmy Chang, he's Hawaii football. I just don't know if he's has the experience to run a program. He was wide receivers coach. So and hadn't been in coaching for that long, frankly. So will he, I think it would be a great story if Timmy Chang leads Hawaii to glory. He's there. He's their pat Fitzgerald, you know? He would be that kind of guy. I just don't know if he can do it. Well, I know that as much as you would love to go to Hawaii our editor has put you on. I guess from what I understand three of the stops you were going to, first this spring, as we can share with our listeners, you are going to see Don Brown at UMass. Jerry kill in Las Cruces and then our buddy Jim Mora in stores. I'm going to take on that. Itinerary quite quite, but yeah, so now that we've given away all the story has the article, but if I'm not saying what the athletic dot com slash the audible $1 a month right now. $1 a month for 6 months, tremendous deal. And then you'll also be able to read this story that Bruce and Antonio Morales are writing that's going to go up Monday as well. Tell us about that. All right, so we have been working on what coaches look for when they turn on the film in recruits from every position. What's the thing that jumps out at them, why? And it's been fascinating. I've talked to a ton of coaches this week for this. And so you get a kind of get into this and I appreciate Antonio for enlisting me on this with him is you just it's a good way to look under the hood of college football programs and hear a lot of insight, especially this time of year, and so I feel like after this story goes up, Elijah can't see will probably be more of a household name among college football fans. I don't know if unless you're an ACC fan, if you know much about him, I'm not saying he's Aaron Donald ish, but I think there's definitely some parallels from Peter has another short super explosive D lineman who probably was a three star guy with a lot of people missed on just because he was not a measurable guy, but maybe that has changed. So in the course of this, there's just some really, really rich material. You know, talking to position coaches. And some head coaches. I mean, one of the guys on your list, Mike mcentire is the new head coach at FIU, but what he really got on my radar was he was the old miss assistant coach who found Patrick Willis, and so he was a good ideal person to ask about what you're looking for. Any coach in the NFL and what you look for in linebackers and how the game has changed. And I think the things that a lot, like what I've heard and what I think Antonio has heard is a lot of this stuff coaches maybe coveted and looked for, not that long ago aren't things that they're looking for as much now because the game has changed. And Aaron Donald to some degree has changed the way a lot of coaches evaluate D linemen and some of the rules have changed the way people. You know, it's like so it's been a really fascinating cross section to see what people look for and to get in the weeds of the recruiting process. You had a story a couple years ago. The one year that Mel Tucker was at Colorado, right? You talk to him in depth about his evaluation process. And it was interesting to me because it kind of went against the grain of what you're talking about. He didn't want to find the undersized Aaron Donald type. He was, you know, this is the Nick Saban Kirby smart. He was adamant. You have to recruit big dudes. Thank you. Well, what was interesting for me at that point? And he and I had talked a lot for that story was I remember thinking in pretty much asking him at this point..

"Looked this back up and my goodness, why you went zero and 12 that year. And if you remember, Bruce, that caused them to fire their coach and bring in June Jones the next year. And I believe to this day, the single biggest turnaround from one year to the next was June Jones, right? Yeah, speaking of which, I'm glad you brought that up. Not that June partner necessarily, but so the next year Hawaii in 1999, they played they played Washington state and it was the week after the Apple cup. So there's definitely that was a Hawaii thing. It's interesting how that unfolded. Good question, Michael. Thank you. And you said, well, actually, oh, never mind. Yeah, Washington state. Yeah, Hawaii turned around from 12 to go 9 in four the next year. And I don't think Timmy Chang was there quite yet. But he would be soon enough and now full circle, Timmy Chang is now Hawaii's head coach after the ouster of Todd Graham. Can I ask you another question? Sure, because this is from James in Seoul, Korea still being so confident Wayne tiffin could win a national title at Georgia was bizarre to me. He was the head coach at USC. I think he's a great exynos offensive coach and he recruits well, but he's been a head coach since 2007, except for two years under Saban at Bama and what's his biggest accomplishment? Okay, stew. Go to bad for your buddy. Okay, well, first of all, you know, he's not the same coach he was at USC. He's a better coach and I think you'd have to be, you'd have to be pretty stubborn to be hung up on the USC era lane given at this point. Because what happened from there was he went to the Nick Saban car wash, if you will, and I think the most significant part about that, though, I didn't realize so much later. When lane kiffin was at USC, he was still pretty much running your traditional the West Coast offense that USC always ran. It wasn't until saving hired him and told him, hey, go study what Hugh freeze is doing what art briles is doing and giving me that. And ever since then, I think he's been really ahead of the curve offensively. He went to FAU and won two conference championships in three years, that program had done nothing before that. He goes to Ole miss, they were pretty down in the dumps and last year they go tended to and go to a near 6 bowl. So I think he's a really good coach now. Not without controversy, obviously. And so I'm saying like, he can recruit well to illness, but I think there's a reason he's going so heavy on the portal, as he knows he can't recruit Alabama talent on the whole at all miss. But at Georgia, he could. I think you did. I agree with you. Lane Kevin has evolved quite a bit. I think he deserves credit for that. So I don't know if I yeah. You think his USC tenure would have gone differently if they didn't have the sanctions. He got the job and then 6 months later, the hammer came down. I do. I don't know if he would have, it wasn't gonna be a Pete Carroll run. I think that the sanctions can not be having been around there. It was a huge deal. It was devastating. Now, some of the how it was handled. You know, I think there's a lot of stuff he could have done differently in regards to around the rest of the program. But yeah, I don't think people can just shrug their shoulders as it was like nothing because it was a real deal. All right, just a couple of quick things before we wrap Bruce. Remember last week, somebody asked you in the mailbag, what you thought was a better chance of happening Miami winning the coastal or finishing in the top 15 of the recruiting rankings when they were like 36th. Tom and Delray Beach and I didn't realize this, Miami did finish in the top 15 in recruiting. Does that mean they are guaranteed to be in Charlotte come December? Guaranteed? No, but I think some of the things that have gone on in the last couple of weeks. I mean, look, they didn't get shamar Stuart, just stay home. They did get trevante citizen to leave Louisiana. That was a big pickup for them. He's a top 100 running back. He adds to a really dynamic running back room. Josh gaddi says a lot of good pieces to work with there as he gets to I think that what tells me what that tells me is there's not much gap between 15 and 35 because it's not like they went out and added ten guys on signing day. They just added a few big names and jump 20 spots. Yeah, I don't quite understand how the rankings formula necessarily is. And look, I mean, we referenced, especially the two four 7 rankings all the time. We think those guys do a terrific job. I honestly didn't know how, like you said, it wasn't like they got oh wow, they got the number two, number four, and number 9 ranked recruit. And so they jump from the 30s to leapfrog a bunch of schools. But as you said, when we did this last week, they didn't have a ton. This was a light on bodies class. You know, it was like, you know, it was a high percentage of really well thought of recruits, but it wasn't like it was like they had 23 guys.

"Who have gone on to the gone on to the NFL and been stars. CD lamb Mark Andrews, you've got a lot of playmakers who've come through there in recent years. And so you got to sustain that. What'll be interesting? And this is kind of a little bit in the weeds, but one of the knocks on as prolific as the system that Jeff lobby is coming from is some of the receivers who've come from that system have really underwhelmed when they've gone on to the NFL. It's not to say that the system doesn't work. Is an effective in college, but I think that will be something to keep an eye on because, you know, is that going to be something that will get recruited against them? I think that's a point that's out there in coaching circles. You know one of the kind of going around at the national title game, we thought last summer for sure, there's no way Oklahoma in Texas are going to stay in the big 12 for another four years. And what's starting to become apparent is, at least OU is not looking to get out early. They're content to wait till 2025. They don't want to pay all that money. And I and I don't know if this is part of the reasoning or not. But this does give you a nice opportunity. Brent venom is a nice opportunity to ramp up to go through several recruiting cycles of possibly transforming the roster to fit better in the SEC because at the end of the day he had some really good teams that ran through the big 12 and then got to the playoff and got killed by an LSU. So am more physical team with certainly better players in the defensive front. You've got Jeff levy who is shown you can run a really wide open offense in the SEC. Yeah, maybe he's the guy more so than Lincoln Riley to turn them into more of an SEC team. Or SEC ready team, but man, that is some tough. That is a tough act to follow. Well, let's put it that way. Michael donlin says with Deion Sanders pulling such high level talent to Jackson state, how long before and I assume he means FBS schools start courting him, which schools do you think would be interested? And do you think he would be interested? I think he would be interested in, and the one that will be very interesting to keep an eye on. And look, I think there were some rumblings about Mike norwell's tenure at Florida state. He's gone heavy in the portal. He's done pretty well in the portal, but he's got a win soon, right? And I think he hasn't been in a bowl game yet. He's 8 and 13 and two years. He had a really rough start to 2021. Dion has been open about his intrigue and the situation there in Tallahassee. I think they'll keep winning. You know, if he goes from three ones to 5 wins and gets them to 7 or 8, I think that would be encouraging enough to Florida state. But if he has another year where don't go to a bowl game, I think that would be very hard for them to be like, okay, we're gonna ride it out, especially if Dion looked the other one was like the FCS coach of the year. If he keeps winning and keeps getting bigger recruits, I could see there being a lot of push right now, or at least for the first half of Dion's relatively brief tenure. In FCS, has really come from people he knows in NFL circles talking about why people are making a mistake by not higher in Dion. And a lot of them have been like what they've said, Dion's been a lot better than most people who are skeptical have thought. I think if he keeps doing that and Florida state doesn't get it going soon, I think that would be a very there'll be a lot of pressure put on Florida state to go. You guys need to bring Dion home. But what happened on signing day of him not just pulling the number one recruit in the country would have been a big deal no matter who the guy was, but the fact that he was a Florida state commit, was kind of like an audition to for that Florida state job. And I agree, Mike and ralston had a tremendous pressure. Because not only will there be calls for his job, there will be calls for a very specific candidate to replace him. And I've no doubt there will be a strong push for Dion. If that situation plays out, but I also don't think Dion we should mention has interviewed for a few FPS jobs, including TCU. So he's already on some AD's radar. At least he was already on some 80s radars even before that signing day massive headline that I'm sure is going to make even more schools to take him seriously. The last one from Michael galvin and Agora hills, California, with the news coming out about Todd Graham, who was who resigned from Hawaii late last week after just nonstop. I feel like over the last month players, former players coming out and alleging mistreatment, how did this guy have top level jobs to begin with? It sounds like there's an open secret in the coaching world. How did this get passed? All of his 80s, including the current. Well, as it relates to the current one at Hawaii, from everything I've heard, there's just a staggering amount of incompetence in that athletic program and really just it has very limited resources. Todd Graham, for all his faults, and we're going to get into some of them in a minute. You know, at least he won some games on the field. I think the aspect of him being in control, he was such a bad fit in terms of culturally out there. You hear a lot of stories about how a lot came out on that Friday night three hour meeting, but there's a lot of other stuff that hasn't come out about. And this has been like, I remember when he got to ASU and I felt like I got a lot of at least on social media blowback from fans because I was pretty critical because all the people I've heard from whom either coached with them or played for them or worked around them who the only other coach that I know of in major college football over the last decade who has as close to a bad reputation amongst his peers as Todd Graham does is Bobby petrino. It's like those two. And there's like a gulf between. I'm not saying it's pretty rare where you won't find other coaches to have something negative to say about somebody in the business, but the depth of the disdain for Todd Graham in about what they think of him like petrino is the only one I've heard who kind of get is into that space and petrino he's won a lot more games. So I think that's why he ended up getting some probably better jobs and still was getting jobs. But you talk to not anyone. You talk to a lot of people who've worked with them and it is next level venom you get. Yeah, and it's not just coaches. People who've covered him. TV people, I've never there's rarely anybody that just has so many so many people that come into contact with him are just totally turned off. Now, so to me, to his question, that speaks to how little vetting the Hawaii AD must have done. Because it should not have taken many phone calls. I'm sure Tod Graham has friends and people in the profession he's worked with who vouch for him. But it doesn't seem to be able to take in many phone calls to find people who are like, no, no, no, no, no. You don't want to do that. And here's why. I think you probably got caught up in all this guy was a PAC 12 head coach. By the way, people forget this, but ASU fans were not pleased when they fired him. I think that kind of went away once they got Herm Edwards. But they felt like he was doing a good job. So, but to your point about fit. I mean, I've spent a lot of time in hawai go every year and you get a window into this also through even if you've never been to Hawaii, if you think of Marcus Mariota or some of the other players that have come from there, the people in Hawaii are the nicest, most welcoming people and I just can't think of better worse fit in terms of personality than for him to go in and coach a bunch of guys in Hawaii. And wow, I mean, the pile on. They had a hearing. They had a state Senate hearing about this guy. That's how troubling it was to people. Yeah. As always, you can send.

Behind the Bets

"Moran is back. He didn't play amazing in his first game back, of course, after being injured. But I think tonight will be a better game for him. Memphis Grizzlies actually have been playing well. So I see them covering on the road against a warriors team that's also dealing a little bit with COVID injuries right now. Russian say injuries could just COVID related issues because sometimes when you see a ton of players go out, you're just waiting for the stars to be rolled out. And Steph Curry's rolled out for this game for some reason, then you know the grizzlies have a way better chance of winning it. The grizzlies have given the warriors fits over the last few seasons. You mentioned the game earlier in the year, but in that play in game last season too, that everyone thought the warriors were gonna smack them around. Griz won out and went to the playoffs and the warriors ended up. It's a team that even when Golden State gets up, they're not able to solve the puzzle that is the Memphis grizzly. So I like that bet and I can see why the light's moving where it is. Two bowl games for you. First one is December 24th that's Friday night. I call it my joy to the world special because as everyone is standing up in church singing joy to the world, you can check your phone to see what the score is in the Hawaii Memphis game. We're going to the Hawaii bowl here. Memphis has been skyrocketing. When we first started talking about this game a couple weeks ago, you could have met this -5. Now it's 8 and a half. I'd still lay it here because I don't think Hawaii wants anything to do with this game. There's been somewhat of a mutiny against head coach Todd Graham, starters wanted him fired school didn't fire him. So now I don't know how much his team's gonna care to show up to play for him in this game. Keep in mind the team's starting quarterback and their leading Russia, both entered the transfer portal at the end of November. They don't want to be a part of this team anymore. And even if they were all on the same page, they are an awful defects. And they're going to get set to go against a Memphis passing attack that ranks 16th in the country. I think Memphis puts it on on Christmas Eve, later in the late 8 and a half with the tigers over the rainbow warriors on Christmas Day. Georgia's state -6 over ball state, the Mac is having an awful bull season so far. Absolutely dreadful. And that's not the reason here. The reason is styles make fights. And Georgia state is a great rushing attack. They're number 9 in the country, excuse me, number 8 in the country in rushing. They love to run it and they're very good at doing it. They're going against the ball state defense that is 93rd in the country defending the rut. All right, Georgia state's got a lot of big game experience this year. They're not going to be shook here. They played all burn, they played North Carolina. They played Louisiana. They played Appalachian state. This is nothing for them. Open four now 6, anything shy of a touchdown I'm in on the Panthers, so it's Georgia state -6 over ball state. Because no one's going to hear from anyone on daily wager until Sunday, we can probably dabble with NFL Saturday. Packers lay in a touchdown at home against the browns, Arizona laying a point at home against the Cardinals, anything catcher I there. I think if I'm gonna play either of these games, I'm going cardinals moneyline. I think everyone is going to look at this loss.

"You don't know this, but so while we were talking, I was like, let me find an old stew report on not an actual one. No, this is going to go well for you, actually. So let's look back ten years. Now, some of these. Can you say ten years ago? Thankfully, thankfully, whatever SI has become has not scrubbed your presence entirely. But there were some no brainers in this class. So, all right, so yeah, please do not look up anything. Okay. So I'm going to say a name you tell me what you think you graded them. Michael leads to Washington state. I bet I get on a you did. You gave it an a plus. And honestly, that you hit that. I mean, because they were awful and did some amazing things there. Urban Meyer to Ohio State. If I didn't give that an a plus, I shouldn't have had the job. Well, you shouldn't have had the job. You gave it an a, I don't know why you didn't give it an a plus? Probably because of the way he you know, the weird nature of the end of his Florida tenure. It was probably the only hold up. Rich Rodriguez two Arizona. A minus. You gave it a you might be starting to cheat now. Well, you better move it around here. If you're going down, I know, I realize that. Bill O'Brien depends. Oh, I pan that. Oops. Oops. Kevin someone to Texas a and M a now B really? Yes. You freeze to old mess. I'm not good. B minus. Yeah, there you go. Hopefully not cheating. No, I'm not. Jim Morrison, UCLA. C D, you hear that? You can't do that. But let me ask you something. He was not a D, let's make it clear. He wasn't a day. But if you're giving him a grade on how his tenure went, what would it be? I would give him a B minus. That's what I was gonna say to you. All right. Illinois hired Tim beckman. Oh no. And you loved it. Oh no. Where do we even know about to jump back then going into that job? It wasn't even the coach of Toledo for like two years. Back men a berea Ohio native knows the Midwest and the Big Ten. He coached at Ohio State under Jim trestle. The 46 year old went 14 and two in the Mac, the past two years, reaching the conference title in 2011. He shows promise those head coaching experiences limited to three years. So I gave it what a you gave him a B, a B okay, that was not a B that was a big fat D that was like a D minus. Here's the one. Whenever it comes down to your tires, this is not exactly inspiring people to read it. Kansas hires Charlie wise. What did you give it? Yeah. No stew. You gave him a C plus. No, I didn't. But after you give it up. Todd Graham, Arizona state. Okay, if I recall that was under somewhat controversial circumstances, I'm going to say give forget the unseemly way he exited. Nobody forgot it, so certainly not me. By the way, now he's in another, you know, hot water situation, why he players are going public with accusations of him being verbally abusive. I'm going to say I gave it a C you gave him a D you gave him a I wouldn't say his Arizona state tenure was a D no, I wouldn't be either. It was probably closer. If we said more was it B minus, then I would say Graham was B minus. I would give him a C plus. Larry fedora, North Carolina. I bet I love that one. I bet I gave it an a minus. You gave him a B plus. I think that's on the gam, and I think there might be one or two. We've missed here, but that was the gist of it. It's a crapshoot. I mean, unless it's an urban Meyer to Ohio State, right? That's obvious. You should you give me so much crap about our bodies. You should go find the one I wrote when he was hired. I think I gave an a plus. Well, why would you not? Everybody would have at that point. So there's the ones that are obviously most of these aside from your backman fanaticism. Was pretty pretty astute. Although again, you gave urban an a I mean, even people hate urban. I wonder why I gave leech a higher grade than urban. Leach have been out of coaching for a couple of years at that point. I don't know. You know, yeah. Look, I can't say that every year. There's some obvious ones at the high end. I will be giving U.S. south I right now who are giving USC an a plus for link O'Reilly. And then there's some obvious Charlie Weiss to Kansas at the low end. Everything in between is a crapshoot. There is no Charlie Weiss to Kansas in this cycle. No, there hasn't been. But they're still could be. No, I don't think there can be. I think that was I think that was an epic fiasco. What's crazy is that there aren't that many epic fiasco hires, but Kansas. One of our colleagues, I think it ranked the worst hires in the big 12 over whatever it was. A man Kansas was like, Kansas was like me in school, which is why I ended up. I believe that was max. Maybe teamed up with somebody else. I can't remember. We did that for every conference, I think. We did ranking all of the coaching hires since 1992. I don't remember what the earliest date was on those. And it was always the main thing is you would get to maybe halfway through and you'd be like, gosh, this guy is high enough to be half only halfway through because so many of these don't work out. All right, that was a fun little trip down memory lane. Thanks for that. Bruce from Mike and be North Carolina pretty simple and straight to the point should they rethink early signing day. It's causing complete chaos with coaches having to take the jobs..

"They want to tell people. They want to tell people because the information is currency, it's fun. It's fun to be in the know. It's fun to kind of know what's going on. You know, I like having information about the NBA, you know? It's a fun thing to actually have access to. And in this world, it's the exact same thing. So there's no way to ever really control the information path on this because it's too much fun to know about it. So whenever we look at the exit and be like, okay, well it should have been done this way. Which way should it be done? I'm all ears. I'm open to any suggestion you have on the right way to handle an exit when you're talking about, in this case, a $100 million to go coach somewhere else. I don't know how it can be done to make everybody happy. Because if the coach ever told us he was totally open to going to bigger programs, then you alienate your fan base while also fucking up your current recruiting because if you don't get that next job, there was like this guy just said he might go somewhere else. He admitted it, it would all be used against him. We would all use it against these people. So I don't really know the better way of doing it. Now there are extremes, right? You've got the Todd gram situation where he went to pit for one year left went to Arizona state. That was in 2011. People destroyed Todd Graham. You want to know why I went back and read those stories because he sent a text message to everybody. Man, ten years later, that didn't even sound that bad. But you go one place one year, and then you bounce you go to Arizona state. Maybe it was a pit Arizona state thing. I don't know, but I remember being on the air when this was happening. Vampire and I were doing the show together and it was like just understood Todd Graham. This guy's the worst. At the other extreme, I think people will tell you that Matt rules handled it well. Whether it was from temple to Baylor or Baylor to the pros or maybe it was because people at temple were like, well, you got to go to Baylor and then maybe people at paler were like, well, he got to go to the NFL. And every time he made more and more money, I just don't really know which way it can be done the right way. But it's also college football's fault because they are selling us and have been for decades they've been selling as righteousness while hiding free labor. They've been selling us the emotional ties that is this better altruistic brand of entertainment when you could argue it's actually the most fucked up of any of the sports entertainment products that we consume. It is the most screwed up of all of them. So it's kind of college football's fault. You tell us you want these things to be important. You say student athlete, strategically instead of athlete student. You brag about graduation rates when you lose. You fought any compensation for players for decades. You finally gave in on the NIL because that way you don't have to share the money with them. We were on the freeze money thing last week because I couldn't believe that it wasn't even getting any attention. He went 7 and 5 at liberty and is now making over $4 million a year and nobody even says anything about it. This money is going to get crazier and crazier. People spend and I'll ask you this when you know you're about to make more money, a Christmas bonus, or more money next year or however, you're finances work. Don't you start to spend a little bit before. Now, some of you can say, I don't. Congrats to you. I think most people human natures, you start to spend the money you think or know you're going to get before you actually get it. I think there's another part of this where college football, as I've said, it has all this TV money coming in. So they're like, you know what? I'd rather pay a guy 11 or 12 than pay the wrong guy 7 and have to buy him out. And you still don't even know if you're right when you're paying the guy at 11 or 12. So this is all college football's fault on top of everything else because it's been branded as this thing that's beyond the money, right? It's this community, which I believe in some of the community stuff here too, but this is why I don't want any transfer restrictions. That's why I want the players to make every last dollar they can, and I want even more compensation going to players that play for revenue generating sports. So part of the angst and reaction to Brian Kelly is because it's like, wait, this is all bullshit. None of you guys care. And what I'm telling you is that it's always been bullshit and I've been kind of okay with it. I'm not even rooting for anyone. And what I think I'm doing here is I'm rooting for everyone while simultaneously not rooting for anyone. But I think the only thing I'm actually rooting for here is reality. Is whenever I see a story like this happening up, here we go. Everybody's going to get their pound of flesh for a guy who handled it basically the only way it can be handled and likely the way we would handle it if we were lucky.

"Don't know for sure. Like you said, it's not an unrealistic scenario. I mean, I don't think Alabama's gonna get it in as a two lost team at this point. So all you need is bailer to beat Oklahoma state or Cincinnati loses to Houston or Michigan loses to Iowa. Any of those three? No names in the playoff probably with an interim coach. That's insane. Could you imagine if Notre-Dame, which has gotten blown out on big stages close to the playoff? And somehow they get in and they leave and win one game in the playoff much less win two. That might be, you know, it's weird and I don't know if Notre-Dame typically as a school that obviously has a huge fan base, but also has a lot of people just are inclined to root against them. I suspect there'd be a lot of people rooting for Notre-Dame because they're wrong. Because, well, I don't know, just because I think, you know, this is, you know, this is the players really get jerked around here more than anything else. You know? And so I think there's going to be a lot of people who probably will be rooting for them. This may be a mood point. They may not get into the playoff anyway. But I just think the aspect of like, I remember thinking that this came up actually today at the USC. It didn't come out the press conference, but it came up with a conversation I had to somebody where, you know, that bedlam game was really close and back and forth. If Lincoln Riley's team, Oklahoma, it won. Lincoln Riley's probably not the head coach at USC, or he's definitely not the head coach right now. Matt Campbell might be the head coach at UFC right now. So it's kind of crazy how it plays this plays out like this, but man, Notre-Dame and Brian Kelly, it's just like, and then, you know, like I think our colleagues both Pete Sampson and Matt fortuna had the text message that Brian Kelly basically sent them and at one point I got a text from a head coach I know who basically was like, did he really break up with them over text? And I wrote back, you know, I kind of included the tweet from, I think it was fortuna. And he was like, man, this is smacks of Todd Graham. And I was like, those are four words, no coach ever wants to be associated. We did that coaching carousel series a couple months ago. We could have done a whole one just on messy exits. "I remember they got an AD search they have to get going. It's complicated right now. I think if the people around South Florida make it known, hey, we really think we can learn Mario to come back here. I think no matter, no matter what happens with many JS, they're going to make a change. If they do not get that strong sense. And there's enough people there around Miami who I think would be able to have a keep in mind. Two of the guys I think who are legit candidates for the AD job, one is Alonzo Heisman's former legendary player at Miami knows everybody there. The other one is Gino toretta. Heisman Trophy winner. Juno is one of Mario Cristobal's old teammates. I think they will have enough Intel to know where that stands. Now if they couldn't get Mario, I think there's enough people at who are very intrigued with the idea of a lane Kevin being their head coach. And they say, hey, we're going to roll with it. And I think lane would have a hard time saying no to Miami. I know he was enamored with that job when he was an assistant coach. A lot has changed since then. I'm not sure he would look at it and go, it's basically all I got to do is compete with Clemson in this conference. And I know the talent around there. For those two reasons, that's why I think Miami will end up making a change. Because I think they know, and if we can't get Mario, we could probably get lame. So lane you think would leave the SEC where I feel like he's really, you know, become a fixture, if you will, a personality for Miami. I'd be surprised if he said no, here's the thing. Here's the thing, too. The only time all miss has had much much success there, they've either gotten on probation or it's not gotten very far. Within the last 50 years. Miami people have one national titles there and they want a bunch of them. You can get players there. And he knows all the talent that's in the Florida. Obviously, he coached at, he spent a lot of time in the state of Florida. I don't think he's saying no to that to stay in Oxford. From come to the to come to the U. It would be that would be a huge win for Miami, frankly. He's about to if they win the egg roll this week it'll be the first ten win regular season in all this history. And then you're going to a place where he's such a great recruiter. He certainly knows that that state, it would be, I know it's been 17 years or so of misery for Miami and going they thought Mark Rick could do it. They thought Manny Diaz was good to do. They thought Randy Shannon could do it back in the day. I'm fairly confident lane would get that. Would get them going in the right direction. Is there any final? Is there any I think our tradition of that Sunday after Thanksgiving is there's always at least one that comes open that you're like, wow, I didn't even know that guy was on the hot seat. I'm thinking of Todd Graham on ASU fire Todd Graham. I'm thinking of the year NC state fired Tom O'Brien. It was like, really? Any possibility there? Well, you hear some little whispers about possibly David cutcliffe stepping down at duke. And that's one that comes up. I feel like that's almost expected at this point. I don't know. We'll have to see what happens how this stuff at ASU plays out. I know Matt zenith, who's a very good reporter at on three has reported that he thinks he's hearing that they're going to keep harm. We'll see. I don't know. I mean, I'm not saying that's not true, but I think that's one to definitely keep an eye on. The thing about herm that I've never quite. People who would assume they're going to fire him. Are they assuming they're going to fire him for performance or for the NCA stock because if it's the NCA stuff, you really got to let that play out. You can't just assume that's wrongful termination suits have been won over schools that fire to coach while the investigation was still ongoing. And as you know, the NCA, who knows how long that could take another year for that whole thing to win through. It could. Now, the interviews are going on now. I don't know how much documentation. This is whatever 2021 version of the NCA. It's not like they're going to show their homework to the president of ASU and say, what are you going to do about this? This is not how the NCA operates, even though they have squeezed out three lower level assistance. And it seems like there's a line of former staffers willing or ready to. Hold ASU and herms and maybe some other people high up there, feet to the fire. I don't know. I don't know how that part plays out. If they're still just interviewing people now, it's probably going to be months. They've been interviewing stew. They've been interviewing their people stew for like 5 months now. I know. But then, you know, like all the steps, right now that you first need a notice of allegations, then it has to go before the committee. There's not going to be a resolution on that anytime soon. No, I don't think there is on that either. What I could see though is her stepping stepping down. Yeah. Yeah, I don't know. I don't know. I'm not sure, you know, look, if your Arizona state is a very good chance that they're going to beat Arizona to go to 8 and four, that would be their second 8 when the season and basically do the last year as a two and two. It's hard to read much into anything because it was such a small season. But they're not firing them for performance. Probably not even though I think this has been a disappointing season to the fans. And they want to eat games, your Arizona state. It's not like the Jake plumber. You want a games in this year's pact. You know, they felt like this was their chance. And look, I don't know what I don't even know their personnel on snow like who's coming back next year or whatnot. But they felt like this was their chance to go to the PAC 12 title game at the very least. And it wasn't like, you know, it wasn't a murderous row of teams. They had to play. They lost to Washington state at home, badly. They scored ten points at Oregon state last week. I would say it's been a disappointing season. Okay. But it's not just not like you screwed up so badly at the fire you. I mean, I think the NCA stuff wasn't happening. That would be not even a consideration, but between the two, it just feels like that program is just, I don't know. What's this one step? I don't want to say dumpster fire, but whatever one step below dumpster fire is. Just a mess. That's a big mess..

"So Paula, these are obviously massive sums of dead money. Where does all of it come from? It comes from boosters. It comes from ticket sales. It comes from TV contracts. It comes from all of these outside places. When you say booster, Paula, that's a term that we hear a zillion times. I think I know what it is, but I'm also not entirely sure. So how would you define what a booster is? I would define a booster as someone who is a graduate of the university or who has very strong ties to the university who has a lot of money who has a lot of influence, politically and within the social environment of the fan base. I think sometimes people use the term booster and donor interchangeably, although I think the difference is a donor is someone who gives a lot of money to the university, a booster is someone who gives a lot to the university and then expect some leverage. They're the ones who can pick up the phone and call the AD or call the president. And in that sense, I think they do have a lot of influence. Let's not forget the fact that if they're offering to donate X amount of money, so the school can afford the buyout. I mean, that's clearly pretty big message. So ultimately, Paula, when you talk about the decision to hire these coaches at enormous salaries to fire these coaches and pay out those enormous salary still. Who makes those calls knowing that the implications are this absurd? Well, technically, the signatures that appear on these documents and the decision makers on paper are the athletic directors, the university presidents, a Chancellor is the boards of regents, and so forth. You know, realistically, I would have to say, in many cases, it's the boosters, you know, there's fan pressure. There's all the outside influences on these programs. And the other thing I would absolutely throw in here is the fact that these coaches have agents. And these agents are very powerful. Yes. And I think when you started seeing that, I think that's when you really started seeing these contracts and these buyout provisions balloon. So all of these agents that representatives, they get cuts of all of this at significant percentages. Everyone is incentivized to boost the payouts here. I mean, when you spoke to some of the power brokers involved here in this dynamic Paula. And you look beyond the numbers, you actually got to hear from them, what do they have to say about how this really works? So the two I focused on were Harvey Perlman who had been the Chancellor at Nebraska during a lot of these coaching changes. And Steve Lee, who had been the president auburn until recently. And Perlman, he really reflected on this saying, this is not something he ever he sees the ridiculousness of these numbers. And one of the things he said to me and he was kind of laughing when he said it, he said, we have a lot of football coaches on our salary. A lot of people about coaches on our channel. Yeah, I was horrible. I didn't like it. And of course, you get a lot of public platform, which I did. But as I say, it's part of the competitive context in which you're operating. And if you're not going to do it, then you're not going to get coaches. And that's similar to what leaf was saying. And he was talking about in negotiating with Jimmy Sexton who was Gus agent. Yeah, super agent very infamous and impressive in this world. Yeah, absolutely. And he was talking about the dynamic of having to deal with the agent versus dealing with his employee. And how he said it really changed the dynamic. He sort of speaks to that how that really puts a lot more pressure and doesn't allow at least in his opinion, the employer to really negotiate in good faith or in what's best for the university. He says, it changes the team spirit of working together for the common goal of advancing the program to much more of an unfund business negotiation. I mean, you know, I guess, I guess it depends on whose side you're on there. I mean, if you're on the coach's side, then that's great for you, but yeah. Paul, it occurs to me as you say this, right? Like, you know, a university professor typically doesn't have an agent. You know, you're working for a big state school teaching. I don't know. Biology, you're not getting a bidding war generated when your contract is up. I mean, this is, again, as much as there is an innocence that we should have all been sort of over in terms of its ruination by now, it's glaring to imagine how these public employees are building marketplaces that drain public institutions of their funds in ways that typically other public employees never even dream of doing. Right. I guess to be devil's advocate there. You could say, well, that biology professor that physics professor, no matter how good he or she is, is not bringing in millions of dollars to the university through ticket sales and TV contracts. And so forth. So that's the other side of it, right? So Paula we had just established, the ESPN daily college program power poll as dead money is concerned, but I want to get to a Hall of Fame for these individuals here. Who is in the dead money Hall of Fame among coaches, what names are we looking at? All right, so keep in mind this is within our cutoff time, but here we go. So at the very top, we have wheel at 19 $.2 million. That includes 12.9 million from South Carolina and 6.3 million from Florida. We have Charlie strong who the total is 11.8 million, 10.1 million is to exit Texas tacked on another 1.7 million after three years of South Florida. Just to clarify and to just give even more shine to will must champ, you're telling me that the South Carolina pay out a 12.9 million that much champ is getting, that's number one, even before you factor in what Florida's given them. Right, that's the exactly. He's sort of gets a little bonus there from Florida. Third on the list is Todd Graham at Arizona state with 11.1 million I guess you don't get three straight bowl Gibbs, a couple of ten with seasons, but man, tag ram with 11.1. All right, good on you or the opposite I suppose. And then you have Kevin someone with a total of 10.8 million, and that is a combined 7 million from Texas a and M and 3.8 million from Arizona. And that Paula is 10.8 million just to keep the math in order here. That's 10.8 million in the Kevin someone's getting without a winning record. At either school over those 7 years he coached it. Right. And we have the aforementioned guest melson with 10.7 million. And keep in mind that this is our cutoff. So he had a $49 million contract that he signed after the 2017 season and 75% of that was guaranteed. And it was kind of funny because in my conversation with Steve leith, the auburn president, he said, he's the credit for getting that down to 75%. So I guess there's a win there. I didn't know Aubrey graded on that generous of a curve at its institution, but.

"It is what it is, by the way. Clay Helton is sixth. On the all time Pac 12 list winning percentage. Clay Helton. He's the think about USC coach to ever have to 10 win seasons in a row. Yeah, like his first two years, So yeah. Here. The other the other ones on that list in order number one Alzheimer's Pete Carroll. Pretty good success. Henry Sanders. He was a la right John McKay, USC legend. Our own. Andy Smith, speaking of legendary and again the name of pop Warner. I know him. I went to school. I went to Pop Warner women, two different schools together. Yeah. Um, so five of the top nine in the Pac 12 list are from USC. Not that surprising, but the fact that Clay Helton's number six is on there. These are there. Yeah. All right. We got a game in a couple of games in progress. You got us. CRS should say Oregon state. In West Lafayette, taking on Purdue and produce leading that ballgame 13 to 7 in the third quarter, the quarterback for Oregon State Is Sam Neuer. Sam Neuer was the quarterback at Colorado. He's in Oregon. E went to Colorado played safety and his first team, especially they didn't play and then was second team All league last year as a quarterback and transfers out, Yeah. Two Oregon State, So they're down by six late in the third quarter in Seattle, the Huskies taking on Montana. The Huskies offense hasn't shown up yet. They scored early 7 to 3 at the half right now, so Jimmy Lake As first of all, he's not lost The game as head coach at Washington is four and oh, And he's not played a game that was not contested at Husky Stadium. They played all four their games last year, that Husky State at Husky Stadium Now once again, and once again they do it again. So interesting for Jimmy Lake and Huskies. You see LA And LSU. It's the big one. As far as the Pac 12 is concerned. Non CONFERENCE game today 77 u. C. L A and LSU. A lot of people thought. Well, you say they beat Hawaii last week. Hawaii. Not that good under Todd Graham. But LSU would be the real test. Well, so far. The strength of that U C. L A team has been their defense. I mean, they got all after last week, and they're playing pretty well again today. They looked good last week in that opener against Hawaii there, you know, I got nice running back to in chardonnay like that Dude can roll from Michigan Transfer comes in. He is a very good running back so I'm pretty impressed with useless so far this game will It'll show you where they're at athletically. LSD was awful in their first game last year, they lost the Mississippi State. I don't know how if Ed Orgeron gets that team going early if he doesn't have that national championship caliber team, right, so We'll see. They travel out here. I don't know what this is going to tell us about your cell. Except they can go ahead to have with a big opponent. I'll say this kind of overall Pac 12 view for me from what I've seen in the first week. Jaden Daniels is for real. This year, My jury was out on Jane Daniels because he was he was not a great decision maker. That first game wasn't a great opponent. But his decision making was very, very good. He was crisp. He looked very clean. Based on what's going on Arizona State. I'm guessing this is going to be his last year in the conference, so enjoying while he's here. Because there's going to be some issues going on down there after the season's over. He is really good. UCL has a running back and a defensive line. That means is going to be very good this year so they can be something SC. Jury's out right there pick to win this whole thing because here's Alabama goes and beats Miami 44 to 7, I think today That's what a team who is in that national championship picture does Good opponent. Bad opponent doesn't matter S C win 32 7, but they didn't do it very impressively, Oregon Barely squeaks went out past Fresno ST. Fresno State's good Are they better than Miami? I don't think so. And Oregon very barely gets past Fresno State is the Pac 12 ready to compete the national level? Don't know. Right now. Alabama is the epitome of what you do in your first game. If you're playing an opponent that shouldn't be on the field with you, right. The Pac 12 hasn't done that. And so that's my take on the Pac 12 right now. I'm really interested in seeing what cow does here today. They got a good opponent. Think it's an opponent they can handle, but I'm really interested in seeing what happens tonight. A couple of all games later on tonight, BYU and Arizona going at a jet fish his first game as head coach of the Wildcats, he's already brought in 17. FBS transfers to upgrade that depleted roster and Washington state posting. Utah ST Nick Rolovich has made more news. With the vaccine. No vaccine. Am I taking it? Am I going to say anything about it? I mean, that's become a national story now what he's doing because it's mandated at all. State of Washington. I believe employees, certainly Washington.

"Ask you about chip kelly. Because i've always liked him very much admired him but the reports on his tenure at ucla have been abysmal. What did you hear from him today. What do you. What do you think it's this team is capable of doing and kenny. Do it quick enough. Yeah this is. The this is the year and Just met with chip kelly so cerebral but i think a lot of people forget because they try to compare his time at oregon to you know his time here. He's going into your four. The expectations are there. This is make or break it year for him. They know that he knows that. But i think people forget that when he came in you know eighty seven freshman and sophomore. Years is what they played their their first couple of years. You know he only had. I didn't realize this. We are talking about it today but he only had fifty seven scholarship players his first year at ucla. Fifty seven and slowly but surely they've kind of built up so this will actually be the first season that they have filled every single available scholarship. This is the very first season they were able to do that. Last year they were kind of mid seventies the year before that they were low seventies but fifty seven his first year. So all of that. The expectations are fair in. I think by steal from coach. Kelly is that he really likes this team. He really Is confident in the veteran leadership that they have he. I think knows the expectations are there and things that he has a team that can possibly meet. Those expectations starts at the quarterback position. Enduring and thompson robinson. Dt are who you know. This is a kid who came out only played one year in high school only started one year at quarterback in high school You know and then was kinda thrown into the mix his second game. You know his freshman year he has to go in and play and and so his maturity. I talked to him this week to and that's what really stood out to me about him. It's just his maturity him realizing. Oh okay. I don't have to do everything i don't have to. You know make a play. I don't have to hang onto the ball and try and do something with my legs and then turn the ball over. I think he realizes now at this point. He's got some veteran guys at wide receiver. So i'm really honestly some stuff running backs over there that he can count on to so this team actually for the first time in chip kelly's tenure at ucla. He's got veteran and they have some experience so the expectation are understandable. But i think within this program they feel really good about where they are to and they talked about taking last year because think about it. They didn't have any students on campus at all last year. Still don't have any students on campus until they start school and they don't start school to like september twenty third or something so this team has been like the only people on campus this entire time there super close. It's a veteran group. And i think they feel really good about where they are and and i talked about that debt. That's a big part of it. Offensively defensively for the first time. They feel like they have that depth to be able to do something else on a podcast two days ago don with berry and he understands the west coast very well and he. He frankly ted on on the on the interview that he thought. Ucla would be the biggest surprise team in the country this year. So we're eager to watch it Before you go hawaii Do they have much or should this game favor yorker because because obviously paul. A big question right is well. Are you going to show everything kaz. Lsu sitting at home watching everything play right getting ready for you. Well that's the big one. That's the one all the friends and family members talking about you know well. Lsu is coming up and he's like here's the deal. All we had to do pop in the tape of hawaii and our players are like. Oh okay day. This is a good football team. You know todd graham and you're too has everything kinda clicking. His son is the offensive coordinator program over there and he has talked about just the progress. They've made offensively. Big time. Quarterback is is the guy you might Might recognize his high school but shoving cordeiro who played behind to And so he's another guy that only had a year of starting in high school because let's be honest. He played one of the best quarterbacks college quarterbacks around so but you know he's a junior now he's gotten that experience And they feel really comfortable in what they can do. And they've got a guy calvin turner. Who can you know. Run the ball. Catch the ball do all kinds of things. And and if you're you're not familiar with what todd graham does offensively You know it all starts with a quarterback and he's a guy that can throw and run so you have to account for him and and that's that's hard to deal with so it is not a walkover game You know. I think it's gonna be a good game and not hawaii defense was. They've struggled big time last year and they actually feel like at this point they actually have you know some edge guys and A defense that can can play much better than they did last year. So i think it's going to be a good game. It's definitely not a hey overlook hawaii and get ready for lsu for ucla real serious legitimate college football conversation here on the friday before dawn. Thanks for making time..

"Eight hundred gambler back to the games week. Zero hawaii playing right down the street at ucla. We will be going to the ucla game week. One vs lsu at home here in the in the rose bowl but we zero. Is this a look ahead. Spot for ucla. They're laying seventeen. Hawaii comes in as a plus five fifty dog sitting at seventy and a half. I'm taking. I'm taking the rainbow warrior's here in seventeen chip kelly's ucla team. Because they've had issues with and i'm with colby overall that Ucla is going to surprise. Some people going to be better than expected but they still have issues with defense and he's only had chip. Kelly only two wins or more of seventeen points in the chip kelly. Ucla year now. Some of that's skewed a little bit because they only played pac twelve teams last year. But i still think. This is an easy spot to overlook a hawaii team. That's not horrible on the road. So i'll take. I'll take hawaii catching the big number. Kobe are you with me. You all in on the bruins on the bruins here. Look last year. Hawaii came to l. a. They played at dignity health sports park. One of the greatest places to stayed to catch a game and then twenty four to san diego state. Hawaii is great on the island when they go away. Where i worry about this. I guess mass just seventeen feels a little high for me. I mean t- to your credit chevron cordeiro that quarterback that todd graham had was a freshman last year. He's only going to get better but i just think. Ucla from an experienced point. I think this is the year that chip. Kelly turns out corner. Gimme the bruins. Think at halftime. you're going to be believing. Oh man we're you hawaii's only downtown. We got this. I was gonna say sean. Did you forget the return. It almost all their starters. Those five school offense. I know chip kelly. That's what i know. That's not the chip. Kelly knowledge is what i'm bring into cry. Okay i'm again. I'm i guess this is the smart side of the table. And i let me guess the public's all over hawaii run uh the public i would say my analysis would be the. The money is split closer to fifty really. Yeah all right. that's surprising. I bet i bet the public's going to be all over ucla. I also feel the same way about chip kelly. There's a stone. i'm not the only one who aids chip. Kelly you ask around. There are a lot of people out there that hate them them. Some chip kelly. You tap heads. The las cruces new mexico square off against new mexico state new mexico state the battle of attention. He looked out. Yeah can't new mexico state nine point home dog plus two seventy on the money line. New mexico state did play in the spring. Unfortunately for them played a couple of games didn't look good. They're like you mentioned kobe. The new mexico state is joining the sec. Coming up here before they do. Though what do you think of them as a home dog against tip. I like it. I mean look. I don't like it. I like it like a new mexico. State teams dog. Everyone transferred out. I mean they literally have like one returning star which is a very unique scenario because they couldn't practice everyone left last year because of the governor's orders and and you know just a disastrous Thing but i do believe that dog martin's not a horrible head coach youtube dana demo in a big year for him. If he doesn't win this year he's going to be fired. I they just didn't pass the eye last year they'd be abilene christian seventeen to thirteen. They they beat the they'd beat stephen f. Austin twenty four. Fourteen in that score was even closer than than what what that shows. Knowledge is on peril. So i am going to take doug martin getting nine points in las cruces battle of i ten rivalry game. But you don't ever games you take the points guys you take the points but colby you also told us repeatedly how bad new mexico status are both. These teams are you. Tip is not to the point where they should be a nine or even there's some nine and a half south there road. Favorite dad is crazy and again new mexico sneaky elevation so Maybe these youtube minors quite in and incomplete shape. So they're coming in odd. Shark has fifteen point three to twelve point. Zero new mexico state gets the cover. That's horrible. I'm gonna call me. I think i think new mexico state rivalry home dog. That's right up my wheelhouse just just Colby an ira on the same page over here. Just like What's that movie. Where the swing. The sword at the same time inside the big coach each book. Yeah el paso thirty seven hundred feet whilst cruises thirty nine hundred feet. So that's a two hundred foot elevation job. I forget el paso had also sneaky elevation. I mean look you got a gas. seventy seven. Hundred is completely different. You where the players coming from that are gonna make this new mexico. State got a transfer on the line. That's i'm really excited about that. One chalky is the place. Should i mean you know what my instincts. Tell me to follow the money. I'll take new mexico. State only getting thirteen percent of the money shot. Martin has just a couple years ago. He took a mexico's state to a ball. Game proven good kreider die. We're on the same sides of everything. Uh-huh wow i'm already feeling good about my position fading to games you guys are going to go to. I'm to go out. That's that's my prediction. That's my locked. We do have a couple. Other games team came bro. We do have other Games on the board here. Southern utah san jose state colby. What are your thoughts here. Lines not out. While san jose state was undefeated in the regular season won the mountain west last year they lost the ball game but they had like thirty plays out including their coordinators I was scout and southern utah earlier in the summer. The thunderbirds great nickname. I'm on san jose state to rule. They're wondering what that line will. What do we predicted going to be. I even thinking like twenty five point. Five something like that My power rating has it at twenty four and a half but brent brennan it look nick starr calls back in your thirty five at san jose state. That they're running back. Tyler evans is a physical team. I think they could win the mountain west again so i'm excited to watch that one. What do you think buddy thunderbirds. I told you. I was in utah. I saw the southern utah football team or a team practicing on a field near the southern utah campus. He could have just been a random high school. I have no idea one of the worst football teams. I've ever seen in my life so i my my note was we're gonna fade southern utah. There's an opportunity there. Fcs right yeah they are. They are well. God bless week zero because now we get to fade so hopefully these cowards. Put a number so we can come back. Come on you got three lines. they needed. Drop this come on now. Vegas does a state. Yeah they're solid team especially at home and how late in the season were undefeated musher until the game..

"Don't hate that under mitt. I just saw. I just saw the total. I was like that is way too high. I especially hawaii traveling. That far distance like all the way to the states. Just kind of a struggle so. Ucla's defense last year was top. Twenty five against the run number sixty against the past. Hawaii was actually number twenty six against the past number one hundred against around. That's why i thought. Ucla was just gonna keep it on the ground. Fucking classic chip kelly oregon it was spread and it was uptempo but it was a lot of running. This wasn't a ton of blood pass chip. Kelly likes to run the ball. They ran the ball sixty percent. I'm last year. Ucla did I'm seeing a number where opened nine and a half and now it's up seventeen and a half. That scares me a little bit. But i've been watching this for weeks and it's been like eighteen. Nineteen for a little bit. So that at that this What am i trying to say if it opened that the summer. Maybe or something like that. Yeah i'm gonna. I'm gonna stay away from that one but i wouldn't not taking i'm not taking hawaii put it that way. I'm not trusting. Yeah i also did lose their quarterback somewhere in the nfl camps. And so i think just under all the way. I think that's the best player todd graham's. It's you actually so what's up. What's going on walk man on. I nobody at we one yet. Top three too early for this weekend. Footy twenty-five written down on the sheet here twenty five of those. I mean. i will take all twenty-five will i give twenty-five out is another question. I will stay some to jump on early if i get a chance here. If this thing moves lester money. Line against norwich on saturday mice one twenty. Five norwich has been dog. Walked both games. Lester loss yesterday card red card to west and west handsome very good. I would take that west ham. Money for crystal palace's minus one sixty. This will not stay at that for long. Crystal palace has hasn't look great. west ham. Has everton double chance again against brighton. I think everton's better than brighton. Minus one seventy man you wolves. I might stay away from manu's mice one twenty-five money lines it. I don't this was menu as impressive week to go. South hampton look very good against the wolves lick against tottenham taught him well. I like this walls team. Might stay away from that one. That's just epl. I mean we can go through this later but tomorrow. Let's just say if you had because you don't want to today jump on as before they. I'm into this sunday here but go back to saturday. Bundesliga leverkusen moneyline mice. One forty against augsburg leverkusen dog walk mushroom gladbach. Yep i mean this leverkusen team looks good. That's good value stood guard. Draw no bet against freiburg stewart. Very good squad. Freiburg doorman last week. I think at draw no bet at minus one sixty stick arts worth the shot here. Union berlin the double chance heroes again this year so far there against masha glad back i might stay away from that one. They were double chance. Mice one seventy. They're double chance mice to thirty. Now do that and then probably hop on real madrid against real betis. Real betis hasn't looked good real tied last week. So that's why you're gonna get reality one twenty five money line. Athletico madrid against villarreal mice twenty-five money line. Anytime you can get athletico up money line. I'm gonna take it and then severe minus one thirty five money line against l. che. I mean severe is a good squad. They won yesterday late. But guy from tottenham has been very good. I banged in a few goals. Lamella has played very well for sarah. So i like severe. Their league has been. It's been tough so far. Yeah i mean. Leon can't win. A game. niece has looked very good. Look at them money line against bordeaux saturday their minds one sixty right now niece. I mean they beat marseille in a bit of a turned into a bit of a dust up and then i might not know. There's a lot of other games here but league has been very interesting a lot of dogs but we'll have more closer to the weekend before. Get out of your odds. Boosts bluejays brewers cardinals all to win. Plus three seventy bluejays have the white sox so like that's not guaranteed brewers have the cincinnati reds definitely not guaranteed and the cardinals have flaherty going against who they playing cards. Yeah flared against the miz. I'm not taking that post that. Reds beer brewers game. I got a weird feeling about that. One maybe burns might get god i. There's no reasoning behind it. He's been lights out. But i just feel like maybe due to give up. A few zero runs scored first inning of mets and giants plus one thirty No thank you dow. Probably stay away. oh fucking double both the seattle storm in the washington mystics to win plus two hundred. Who was at the white house today. Bill and beer don't was it was. It was a bill in beer. What team is bill. Nba coat celtics for double play so the seattle at the white house. They're playing tonight yesterday. you know. Maybe maybe they're resting on there. I'm not taking. I don't do. This often. Told me. But i might sit out at wnba odds boost. Call me crazy tonight. Just usually i would but tonight i sit this one out. We should probably tweet out the rollover Yeah things fifteen hundred. Fifteen hundred fifteen hundred. We'll do that Good luck on that. Yeah ten teams ten leg mice one thirty or worse yes sir.
