Toby Harnden Shares a Story From on the Ground in Afghanistan
"You mentioned this story, the prison uprising, Mike spann, a former marine CIA paramilitary. For those who know nothing, give us the story of that incredible event and what that man did. Yeah. It is incredible. And so November 25th, 2001. Two CIA officers walk into this fort called calla jangi, which means literally like fort of war outside mazar I Sharif. Now, backing up a little bit mazarin Sharif had fallen to northern alliance forces, aided by our allies. Our allies aided by the CIA green berets and air force combat controllers and the awesome might have U.S. air power overhead on November 10th. Now, less than a month earlier, Mike spann had been one of 8 CIA officers who landed in the Darius souf valley, aboard two Black Hawk helicopters that had flown in from Kashi Khan about K two, a former Soviet air base that Uzbekistan government had given over to the Americans for this post 9 11 mission. So October 17th, 2001, they land at dropped into the unknown. First Americans behind America. So we are barely barely a month out since 9 11. Yeah. First Americans behind them enemy lines. Now there had been a CIA team called jawbreaker that had landed in the pantry of Ali on September 26th, but that was, you know, relatively speaking safe territory controlled by the northern alliance. But this was enemy territory, Taliban controlled territory. So 8 of them, four of them were paramilitaries, one of those was Mike span. So when paramilitary is somebody who's been seconded, usually from the military and is working in the CIA using their skills for the CIA. Yeah, usually they actually in the CIA sometimes their contractors or people who've been seconded and on some of the other teams that were actually serving members of the Delta force and seals. But the four paramount trees on team alpha were serving CIOs special activities, division. Scott spellman, who was on the cover of the book, he was later became very senior, it was the senior CIA guy on the National Security Council during the Trump administration. He became station chief in Kabul, but then a young officer, but already battle hardened he had been wounded in the battle of Mogadishu in Somalia in 1993. It was a guy called Alex Hernandez, who was the deputy chief, who was a sergeant major, gone full career in special forces and then joined the agency and two case officers, JRC, who was the chief who'd worked with the CIA out of Islamabad in the 1980s against the Soviets for the supply and stinger missiles to the mujahideen and David Tyson who you mentioned at the beginning who was with Mike span on November 25th 2001. So they're in unfriendly territory. This is the Ford of war, walk us through that event. So David was a case officer based in Tashkent and spoke Uzbek almost fluently. And so he's the linguist and the main linguist on the team, although JR, seger also he spoke diary, which was the sort of lingua franca in Afghanistan. But on that day, the team split, there's a big fight, a hundred miles to the east. It expected in Kunduz so the bulk of American forces are there. But the night before 400 Al-Qaeda prisoners had arrived on the eastern edge of mazarin reef to surrender, and it was extremely murky why they were there. They should have been surrendering in Kunduz. And basically, I mean, what I was able to establish almost beyond doubt is that this was a Trojan horse operation. It was a deliberate trap. Yeah, it was a Taliban Al-Qaeda operation to put pretend that for these 400 fighters had surrendered, but in fact they were made up remained armed. They sort of exploited Afghan custom to keep their weapons with them and they were planning an uprising. Because you can have lots of people surrender at once if it's a regular army during the Gulf War, we had thousands of Iraqis surrender at once. When it's irregular fighters, you don't usually get hundreds of them surrendering at the same time. It's a little bit

Who Is 'First Casualty' Author Toby Harnden?
"Before we get into these amazing stories, Mike span, David Tyson, John walker lind, who is Toby Honda. Tell us about what you did in the British armed forces and your life as a journalist before you became an author. Yes, well, you know, we share a somewhat similar accent as listeners and viewers will detect. You still got yours. Our minds kind of rubbing off a little bit, but I don't know. I'm worried. I'm worried about mind getting a little bit Americanized. But I trust yeah, you're a bit soggy in the middle of the Atlantic somewhere. Yeah, I mean the ace. So yeah, I'm 56 years old, I was born in 66. My father was in the navy. We moved around, we sort of ended up in Manchester, industrial city in the northwest. You don't have a mancunian accent. I think the Royal Navy actually did for the mancunian accent, which was pretty skin deep anyway. But you know, I sort of, you know, I wanted to follow in my father's footstep, I guess there's so many sort of young men do. And I also wanted to get out of Manchester and see the world and it just seemed like a very kind of insular sort of small sort of place. And so all that teenage angst was just channeled towards working hard to get out. And so I got a sponsorship from the I joined the navy at 18. Went to Dartmouth, which is the Britannia royal naval college, kind of the equivalent of the U.S. naval academy at Annapolis, but not really because it's more basic officers training. It's like santas is shorter. Yeah, that's right. I mean, I was there for less than a year. And I threw the navy I got a sponsorship to Oxford to study modern history, so I went off whilst serving naval officer, although I barely wore the uniform for those years apart from a few months sailing around sort of Hong Kong and the far east and Australia. So I had some good times. Yes, exactly. So I was serving naval officer for three years at college and then graduated from college and was pitched in to a career. Which I enjoyed immensely, but you know, it was after the Falklands War, which was 1982, I was joining and supplying to join just sort of join the Falklands actually, age 16. But I missed that. I was stationed in Scotland for the Gulf War, tried very hard to get involved. They managed to that's a long way away from Iraq. I know. They managed to win it without meeting my services. And I remember my boss at the time said, listen to, we don't worry about it. There's going to be plenty of time for medals. And I remember thinking, no, there won't. And of course I left after ten years of service without a single
'First Casualty' Author Toby Harnden on the Early War on Terror
"Him. He is toe behind and he's the author of a book called first casualty the untold story of the CIA mission to avenge 9 11. Toby, welcome to one on one. Thanks very much to the best in great to be with you. So we could you have kind of reinvented yourself in the last year or since this book came out. I see this very, very nicely curated posts on Instagram elsewhere with these iconic photographs from the battle zones from the mountains of Afghanistan, where you're taking a snippet of this incredible story and illustrating an individual and event. Let me start with the big picture. So I came to this issue of the gwa as a guy who done can a terrorism stuff. I was in the reserves in the British territorial army, then worked at the Rand corporation on Al-Qaeda issues. And then I looked at this question of insurgency and counter insurgency foreign internal defenses brack calls it. And I was convinced of the following. For all the weaknesses of the last 21 years, what America, with a very select number of allies and locals did, in the October of 2001, was absolutely incredible. In terms of small footprint, special operators paramilitaries with a tiny investment of manpower, creating a strategic effect, should be a case study of how it's done. And I think your book shares that analysis. I think in a way it is that case study, I agree with you absolutely. I mean, this is a period in time when we had hundreds of Americans on the ground. We're a handful. Yes. Not the 100,000 we had a decade later. And they were CIA paramilitaries, CIA case officers, green berets, U.S. Air Force combat controllers, and they were working by with and through. Which is the phrase. If you're not familiar, this is the, you know, the green berets, the in theater, irregular warfare, by with and through is how you look at the locals. That's right. By with them through the indigenous allies, and the indigenous allies were the northern alliance in the north a few pashtuns in the south, who were the resistance to the foreign invaders. The Americans weren't foreign invaders. My sort of contention really is that there wasn't an American invasion of Afghanistan until
Bart Herbison Tells Us About the Nashville Songwriters Association
"When I talk about the Nashville songwriter association, they asked, well, what is that? So let's start off here, but just won't tell a little bit about how you got into this and also about the national songwriters as well. Well, me first a little hoity toity. My father was a painter in Paris. A house painter in Paris Tennessee. And look, we grew up in a rural area, somewhat poor, and music was the thing. Music, my grandma played piano in our little Methodist Church, and everybody was musical in my family. Three brothers played Trump at I blew mine, the other two played theirs. And I guess it's 16 years old. I got a job as a dish jockey at the local radio station, which was an NBC affiliate, and ended up doing some work on a national show they had. But a guy that grew up with me became a very famous songwriter named Jimmy Stewart, he wrote brotherly love, the last number one for Keith. Whitley, a little less talk for Toby, and I just was always drawn to that. I always drawn to they just make this up out of thin air and I said as a child some day somehow I'll work with American songwriters, and I did. For us, the origin story, I don't sing, but remember please release me let me go. The waste our lives would be a sin, release me and let me love again. That was written by Eddie Miller. Yeah, singing was not part of that too at bar. It takes a while to pass the bill. And he was a real southern gentleman, and he thought we can orgas the songwriters. There were only 80 songwriters total 80 in the entire town of Nashville in 1967. And he reached out to all of them and a lot didn't want to risk their career because even our friends within the music industry didn't necessarily want to see the songwriters quote unquote organize. But Eddie got married John wilkin Chris Christopherson fully and boulevard Bryant Liz and Casey Anderson, a bunch of really important songwriters and 42 risk their careers to become an advocate advocacy group for American
EQT Corp. CEO Toby Rice Defends U.S. Natural Gas Prices
"Now, Toby rice is a CEO, oil and gas, listen to this. It's an old stale left wing argument. It's like gas stations are going to collude to have higher prices. But have you responded to that or what would you say if she comes at you for that? If referring to Kamala Harris also talking about price price gouging on the part of oil and gas companies. I think it's an amazing argument. It's a tough argument to make because the reality is natural gas is a commodity. The price is set by supply and demand. And if people were able to set the price for this product, tell that to the dozens of energy companies that went bankrupt over the last 24 months. Clearly there's no ability to control gas prices. But what people can do to influence gas prices is what a lot of anti infrastructure people have done, which is prevent our products from getting to market. And it's as simple as blocking pipeline infrastructure, and this is a reason why Elizabeth Warren is importing gas into her state of Massachusetts and by the way, penguins, international prices. When she's got the biggest natural gas deposit in the world, 200 miles away in Pennsylvania. It's all about just connecting this market with the demand. Isn't it Russian gas? By the way. Yeah, it's Russian gas and actually a lot of it's coming from Trinidad and Tobago. So we're talking about moving gas 3000 miles away to get it to actually my mom's where my mom lives in Boston. It's completely ridiculous. Actually, when you think about it, we're exporting around 12 and a half BCF of gas a day. That's an amazing thing. But our tankers with LNG are passing as they're heading to as they're heading to Europe. They're waving as Russian LNG cargoes are bringing gas to Elizabeth Warren's home state. I know it's a remarkable bizarre approach. So when the prices go up, the left accuses the olding gas company of price gouging when the price goes down. Well, they change

"Joy Reid believes in suppressing the truth She's a hater And worse And she and her friend what is a Toby Tiffany and others and so forth It is there in my view who are blood on their hands It is people like that will never allow this country to come together Ever And it's because big corporations and these corporatists the CEOs and COOs and CFOs and these board members they want this They want the ratings increased If they can get them But if not they figure they're covering their asses They're protecting themselves because we don't spend enough time going into their damn shareholder meetings raising hell Whereas the other side does They do And they trash mouth and they smear and they slander and they libel We pretty much scratch our heads and complain to each other

I can't believe to say it's been six months already. And in settling in pretty well. I still feel like i'm in my on boarding phase. I think toby road something a year or two ago. Adobe look at the ceo saying something like it takes a year to onboard. But i thought that was just like a thought leader kind of concept. But i certainly do still feel like i'm on boarding to the company in a good way. So what have you been up to chapel find now that you are. Let's say halfway on boarded. "Really funny. That is really funny. I want you guys to know that. I have a garage that we use as a home office and for a long time we would just raise the door and then there would be amazing light. No so it did get great light but you had to raise the door and then years later we actually just removed the door. Because we're like this is never going to be a garage again. We've sort of made it into this little home office and put an actual sliding glass door. But i get it does have great lighting. You just have to open it up. But he does present it like this. Garage has great lighting. As if the other garages that you open. The whole side of the building wouldn't have great lighting. He's presenting as if it's like a special feature kind of applies to every garage. That doesn't have like a giant tree planted in front of it which it wouldn't 'cause it's a garage right. Most garages or just boxes with no windows. I have to tell you two things about shooting these scenes at the house. This scene where. Jim is trying to take the clown painting off the wall. Pam is one of the hardest. I've ever laughed on the show. It is the second hardest time the first was when we did. The scene in dinner. Party were michael's showing us the tiny. Tv on the wall. This is the second every time. John tried to lift the painting on the wall. I could not stop laughing. I don't know what it was tears tears choking on our laughter. We laughed so hard. I looked for it in the bloopers. And it's not there. And i'm so upset it's not there. It took us like an hour to shoot that tiny moment of him trying to take trying a off the wall the painting off the wall. John is also so funny at physical comedy yes. I laughed out loud when he pulled back that fake wood paneling and it kinda startled him yes so then at the end of the scene in the garage. When we're hugging. I improvised the line. What about the clown and it. May john laugh. And that's why he's like burying his head into my neck and then when he said yeah. I can't do anything about that. It made me laugh. And so i'm like smashing my face into his shoulder. You can totally tell we're breaking and that's why it was because we were still anytime we brought up the clown painting. We lost it. I love that moment. It made it intimate and funny and sweet. I think it's time to talk about the greatest white talking head of all time. That's saying a lot because there are some amazing dwight talking heads but this one really is like top five. He's going to describe his perfect crime. And i think we have to hear it. What is my perfect crime. Break into tiffany's and midnight. Do i go for the vault. No i go for the chandelier. It's priceless as i'm taking it down. A woman catches me. She tells me to stop. It's her father's business. She's tiffany i say. No we make level night in the morning the cops common escape in one of their uniforms. I tell her to meet me in mexico. But i go to canada. I don't trust her. Besides i like the cold thirty years later. I get a postcard. I have a son. And he's the chief of police gets interesting. I tell tiffany to meet me in paris by the trocadero. She's been waiting for me all these years. She's never taken another lover. I don't care. I don't show up. I go to berlin. That's where i stashed the chandelier. Yeah i do not know how rain got through saying. This is where the story gets interesting every time i watched this episode. I laughed at that line. And i watched it like three times this entire talking head was scripted and it was delivered as scripted. I think this is one of the most brilliantly written pieces ever. it's just so good. it's so good. And who better to deliver it than rain wilson. as dwight. It was just perfect. I agree there. You have it. Everyone that's frame toby. Did you have anything else angela. I don't have anything else. I do want you guys to know because gin and i both watched the bloopers next week on the surplus was one of the hardest. I've ever laughed in scene. Oh i can't wait. Thank you so much to randy. Cordray james carey and gentle paul lieber. I traded some emails with them as well man. That was fun. That was a delight. I will be trying to clean my microwave using your method. It's such a sloppy. make out to. It is not that tidy make out would have made it any better at work exactly. Well ryan wants out a. He doesn't wanna sloppy. Make out he doesn't want to tidy one. He's going to thailand with some friends from high school. A high school you know. He has to break up with her because if he doesn't he'll always resent her if he didn't go he would like them to be adults about it. Maybe they could have sex one more time and does she have any cash. The let's be adults about it but we could also have sex one more time. It's such a dude move. I feel like. I've heard that so many times i know. Do you want to have some good by sex now. Oh just goodbye. Get your sorry ass out of here. Yeah exactly fan. Question from gracie are when orion is telling kelly. He's going to thailand. Why are they both wearing different clothes. I'll tell you gracie because this scene was originally supposed to be the tag at the end of the episode and it was meant to be a new workday so in the script. This scene was not during the same day that we were framing toby. It was the next day but in editing they moved it up and we are going to end instead with a delicious dwight talking head. We'll get to it but i. Jim needs to show pam what he's done. That's right gems nervous but excited. He is as my daughter. Says nervous cited And she's like. Why are we stopping at your parents house. And he says i bought it and then jonah at eighteen minutes two seconds. Jim says let's go inside. I'll show you inside has never been inside the house. We got so much mail about that. People wrote in. They said if pam knew they were jim's parents house when they pulled up wouldn't that means she's been there before and she's probably been inside. You would hope pam has been inside his parents house. They've been dating for a while. They live in the same town. Yeah and it's interesting because his parents have moved out but they've left some furniture also how rough or they on this house. I know and jim says i was helping my mom out. Where's his dad. I don't know. I have a lot of questions. There were a lot of questions. Rachel am and megan l. Said questioned for jenna in this episode. When jim is showing pam his parents house. I was wondering what went into how you decided to play this scene. Because she seems really worried and unexcited but then in the end. She says she loves it. Any input you could give about how you decided to play this or what. The director told you would be super appreciated. We'll guys we've already discussed my personal opinions on someone buying someone else a house without telling them so. This was a little bit of a mental gymnastics for me to get pam to the place where she's gonna say she loves it and where she says that line. I mean you bought me a house. Because it was like not how i would react as jenna. You know i had to really play the character and play the characters truth and in the script i was being told that my characters truth was that she loved this gesture and it made her feel loved. Yeah why i mean. I think we often did that. Obviously we had to play the truth for the character. I mean i hope you guys know. I'm not very much like angela. Martin and how. I would react to things but it makes sense to me jennifer pam. You know and jim made the garage into this art studio. And he's really putting down some roots with her. And i think pam wanted a family and she wanted all of these things that jim is offering her. She had wanted that. You know i had thought a little bit back on the talking head. Were pam discusses. What her perfect home with look like how she always wanted a home with a terrace. You know picking her home seemed like something that pam was attached to. So i did bring that up. I said we've established that pam. His daydreams about what her home would look like. And now this person taken her out of the process you brought that up to the writers at the time of when we were filming. Yeah and so. I was saying like help me understand. Why pam now is so happy and so excited an angela. We got to exactly what you just said which was that. It was a vulnerable thing for pam to give up the art school track and she did that because of two reasons. One graphic design wasn't what she meant. She wanted to do as an artist and to. she's ready. She's very very ready to start living. This married life to be in the season of family and marriage with this man that she's been waiting years for and so this home is her fast track to that season of her life and she's just ready. Yeah and you know. They're going to get to fix it up together. So there's still that element of nesting that's going to happen. And so that's kind of what i was thinking was like i'm ready. And you have to think. Think when pam talked about her dream house with this tower in the terrorists and all of that she was in an unhappy relationship. When you're in a place you feel stuck in life or you're unhappy you daydream. And you daydream about these fantastical things and they're coping mechanisms. And then when you're with someone you really love. You don't need the fantasy anymore at such a good point angela. You're just ready to have a life and she's ready to have that life. Yeah now we did get some mail about that. Garage katie c. Kriss gee said. When jim is showing pam has parents house. He says the garage has great lighting. He then proceeds to open a windowless garage door revealing completely windowless garage space. Where's the great lighting. Jim where okay. we'll have. That was.

"Says i'm totally on your side. But the truth is he went to make a cup of noodles in the microwave is still a mess and he wants her to clean it up and she delivers some real pam sas pam. I just want to let you know. I'm totally on your side with a home microwave situation. Thank you. I was just back there to make some cup soup. The thing is still huge mass. Can you believe it. It's crazy. But i guess the thing is at some point notes or no notes. Someone's going to have to just get their clean it up. I guess that's my. We haven't tom palm. I would just make it worse. How would wiping with the paper towel cars. I would find a way seem things clean before pam. I'm hopeless at stuff. i. I'm yeah some good pam saf that was all scripted. I know it sounds like genesis. It was scripted. I just brought my self to it. You brought some real truth to it. I did well and we got a lot of fan questions asking who did clean the microwave because this never gets wrapped up we never find out. Did it get clean. Who cleaned it. This would have wrapped up. Its in the script and we filmed the big scene that would have explained all of it. It was a fun scene to it. Why isn't it has a great pam angela. Moment at the top. Yeah so it starts with angela. She's storming in from the kitchen. She's super ticked off and she's holding up a note. Someone has drawn a penis on the note and she confronts pam. I know she thinks pam drew the penis. Why did she always blame. Pam for this kind of stuff. I don't know here's how it went pervert usual. I didn't do that. So is this what they taught you at your fancy art school. Why would i draw penis on my own note. Maybe wear bright colors for retention payments. Everyone i have an announcement to make. I'm the person who put the first note on the microwave. Pam comes clean. And i remember shooting this because pam kinda goes on to take charge of the room after. She admits that she wrote the note. She's like an. I guess. I just have to say what's so wrong about the note. Why is everyone so offended by this note. Shouldn't you be more offended by a consistently dirty microwave. She gets on her soapbox. It's pam soapbox. it's pam soapbox. And you guys as an actor when we got to have a moment where we commanded the whole bullpen. It was exciting and also we would like kind of terrified. Oh yeah 'cause you're in charge of like the pace of the scene. This only happened to me a handful of times when angela makes a big announcement or something. But i remember jenna watching you and you were so good in this moment because everyone is like throwing you little curve balls you know oscar and stanley and kevin. You know they're all kind of sassan. You and you know. The last time that i had a scene like this was back in beach games when panelist gonna confront the whole group about her feelings and how. They didn't come to her art show. But in this instance people were interrupting me. And they're coming at me. And i got such a window into. What steve's every day was yeah at one point. The group starts hazing pam about being in new york and pam gives this speech. That kinda takes jim off guard. And i think we should hear it. Listen new york. That might fly. Why because i went to new york for three months and the black sweater manhattan. Okay yes. I went to new york. Everybody i'm not gonna apologize for it. I experienced more. They're in one week than i experience here in three months. I love new york. You know i especially love the people. They're cleaned up after themselves. Well jim has just her sale. That yeah and the camera is pushing in on his face and he's realizing at the end of today he's gonna tell her he bought them a house in scranton. She's not going back to new york anytime soon. This place she loves. I really wish this moment had made it into the show. Because i feel like it just sets up the stakes for jim. Because he's doubting his decision from the very beginning. Did i do the right thing. Is she gonna like this. I don't know. And i feel like he needed to hear this. And i feel like the audience needed to hear it. I do too. I think it's a shame that it got cut out and you know at the end of this whole scene. Pam says fine. Go clean it. So it is pam in the end. Who cleaned the microwave. Yes in the script the very last line of this big scene. This pam marches over to the kitchen and stanley starts to slow clap here. We have a slow clap. That didn't make it. Oh that's right. Oh that's bringing back that memory of me walking to stanley. Slow clap So good it's time for michael to plant. What he thinks is two pounds of marijuana in toby staffs and at the same time. Dwight is going to call the police and report that there is a drug dealer named toby. Flender sohn on the premises and when asked to give his name. Dwight says his name is andy. Bernard dwight is gonna throw andy under the bus. Any chance he gets there was this deleted scene. Jonah for michael to be able to have the time to go plant the drugs. They needed to get toby away from his desk. So dwight asks toby to show him his photos from costa rica. Let's go to the conference room. A look at your photos. Toby is thrilled that someone wants to see his photos. And then michael sneaks off to plant the drugs but in true michael fashion. He can't keep the secret he has to share with someone that he might have done something. This is what he said. I think it's really cool that he wanted us to see my father's my sister thing on that white oval. It's meows boogie boarding. Can't wait. Who took his picture. Did you make some friends I had a kid to toss snap it. Tell me about this monkey. I'm not at liberty to talk about it. Let's just say that. I something something in somebody something and if discovered then someone will get something said too much. You can't say anything. He can't containment is not his strong suit. No and then. I have to say that scene with dwayne toby to me. It sounded like rain. Wilson improvising questions trying to stump polly burstein jenner. You're not wrong. I'm looking at the script right now. The part with what's the red thing crawling on that oval that was scripted. Okay but the tell me about this. Monkey is not in the script okay. Also what about that question. Who took these pictures. That's in the script. Oh it is yes funny. Line the improv moment is the monkey. Okay now the police arrive and they are going to look into this. Possible narcotic situation. Pam doesn't know anything about it. Dwight's gonna take charge and then michael starts freaking out. Yes and then they realize it's ziplock.

"Today on the app store or google play. That's friends without our best beans. It's time for michael to do his best. This is michael best Michael approaches toby's desk to welcome him back. He's asking questions about costa rica. Toby says it was amazing but he came back because it was kind of hard to meet people. It was hot. But michael can't stand it. He cannot stand this incredibly innocent small talk with toby. No he can't. He goes back to his office. He has this talking head or he's like. I tried i tried. I tried to talk to toby and his friend. But it's like trying to be friends with an evil snail. Wanted to who in. The writer's room came up with evil snail. His so funny. It's such a description of tova good description. And then he goes onto say feels like neve campbell and scream to has very funny talking head where he learned a lot. I guess from the screen movies jenna. There was another talking head in the script. So the one you see with the neve campbell. Yep that was not in the script so that must have been an alternate talking head. They handed him on the day. Okay in the script. This is michael's talking head. It's almost the same right up until the evil snail so evil snail was in the script. Yes evil snail was a keeper. We've always had that but this is how it changed in the script. The last four months without toby have been absolute bliss. I fell in love with a beautiful blonde woman. I fell out of love. I tried scallops. The office was broken into. I became a father. I grew goatee. The olympics were a great success for china. And now that i've tasted freedom. I can never go back. I'm going to kill him. No too far but i will do something no too little. I will get rid of him. I like it. I love his breakdown. Of what all happened. And i love that he included. He grew goatee me too. It's true fact that michael is going to try to get rid of toby. He is looking for fireable offenses. Dwight says there are two that he can find in this binder workplace violence or sexual harassment. So i guess michael's first plan is to try to get toby to sexually harass pam. He goes up to pam's desk. He hands pam note and he says go give this note. Toby don't read it. Don't read it pam. reads it In the note it's written as if it's from pam and it says please hug and kiss me no matter how much i struggle. I'm too shy to confess my love to you. Can you imagine if toby read that. Now his brain would have exploded Yeah well that doesn't work. Yeah no. I'm not going back there so now. The new plan is to get toby to beat up. Michael yes so. They marched back to the annex and michael sort of confronting toby and trying to sort of antagonize him to hit him and dwight's like hit him and then kelly johnson so quickly hit them. I know first of all her and ryan were making out. Oh yeah the. They've stopped making out so that they can weigh in and therefore fight. They're like do it. Hit him hit him. Toby refuses it's not working. None of these plans are working. So you know what they're going to have to do. They're gonna have to go big. They're going to have to frame toby for drugs. Like on the shield that dwight that i framed. Many animals framed a raccoon opening a christmas gift. White wall michael thinks it sounds mean but sometimes the end justifies the mean. That's such a good line. Such a good line at so smart. It's smart funny. it reminds me of the gem. I'm not superstitious bits dishes. Yes that it's right in line with that. So yeah michael's gonna go and hit up leo and gino over in vance refrigeration for some drugs. They give him what they say is two pounds of weed and they want five hundred dollars. Michael has five hundred dollars in his wallet. I thought the same thing. This a lot of cash in your wallet and for my background catch people. Did you see the lackawanna library card in michael's wallet. Yes when he opens his wallet. There's a lackawanna county library card. Do you know what. I found recently when i was cleaning out my closet. What pam's wallet you did and in it. There's a credit card that says pam beesley. There's all these cards they made for my wallet. My prop wallet. I'll take a picture. We'll put it in pod. Yeah we put it in stories. That's so fun. How crazy is that they did that. That's how detailed phil shay was. Yup if you had a prop wallet it reflected your character. Although is michael going to the library and why what set for i mean. I feel like michael's probably that library card for like twenty years in his wallet. Yeah maybe there was a time where he didn't have internet and he'd have to go to the library await. We didn't have internet. Maybe he used to go to the library to make copies because the copier in the offices crap. We'll get to that next week. Yeah so and you know how when sometimes we're watching an episode or were breaking down our document to prep to do the podcast will get curious about something and we'll do a deep dive. Did you do on on something. I didn't our associate producer. Ainsley ainsley what you dive. This is what she wrote me. she said. According to a regrettable. Google search the price of one pound of recreational marijuana in pennsylvania ranges from nineteen hundred dollars to two thousand five hundred fifty dollars. She had to know she was like okay. They're selling michael two pounds of weed for five hundred dollars. Inslee got curious. How much is a pound of weed in pennsylvania. And now i looked in. We shot this in september of two thousand eight. So how much was it in two thousand eight. I'm not sure but today that's gonna run you quite a bit of money with today's prices. Michael gotta deal because it would cost him close to five thousand dollars to get two pounds of weed today. I also wanna say that's clearly not two pounds of anything in that baggy. No it's green but it's not two pounds. I mean two pounds. I have two pounds of things oliver. My house like two pound weights to pound bag of flour. That's not to pounds of anything it's not. I've had two pound bag of spinach and my house before it's much bigger than that. It takes up the whole crisper drawer. You're very passionate about painting a very clear picture of what two pounds is. I mean it's so glaringly obvious that that's not two pounds. There are so many signs that michael missing. Don't get started token we started on. What two pounds of something is. I'll tell you about my two pounds of spinach. I just ordered two pounds of epsom salts and that was a large package as well. Where do you making warm soothing bath. Well listen we're about to find out. That pam has an ally in this whole microwave. Business does she. She has ryan who is pretending to be an ally and he's laying it on thick and i love it. He.

"Alike. Yes i noticed. That pam is doing that thing that angela always does where she wears like a weird short sleeve sweater over a blouse. They both have v-neck short sleeve. Sweaters over short sleeved. Blouses angela's is like brown on brown and pans is black over purple. But this short sleeve sweater. I have to believe that was a genius. Wardrobe choice by alesia ray craft. I think so because that is funny. I screen grabbed them. I'm going to put him on side by side and stories. Well we got a fan question from maddie and laura. They asked in the episode. Both pam and angela agree that the note on the microwave was acceptable and correct. Where do you guys stand in real life. As jenin angela. Note are note you go. You go you go. Why don't you go first. I'll tell you what. I'm probably a no note. I'll just sort of like stu and resent you forever. I probably a note but here is my reaction to the note. When i see the note. I'm like you know what you needed that. Whoever you are out in the world You needed to get it out. So i'm okay with it one time jenna. I'll never forget this. I was in high school. And i had finally got my driver's license and we went to the mall. You know you're going to go to the mall. And i think judy because i was so excited. I had my friends in the car with me. Were at the mall. I was a little distracted. And maybe i didn't do the best parking job. Okay and after our day of going to clair's boutique and hitting up five seven nine. Maybe the candle store we go back out to my car and there is way haute. I'm so sorry you you bought candles as a teenager. It goes that far back for you. I and the cane. Angela went to the mall and she went to the candle store. She loved yankee candles. Jenna okay i sorry go on you. Get to your car yankee candles. It was right next to the hallmark store. I could get myself a card. Maybe a knickknack go get a candle. I'm sorry older. You'll your your your side that again. This story i've been grandma my whole life anyway. I walked back out to my car with my friends. My first outing in my car to the mall. Yeah there's a note under my windshield wiper. what's it say. This is what it said. Hey dickhead next time. Leave me a can opener. So i can get into my car. Sorry what of sandwich. The guy's car. I don't know oh but you know what i was like. He needed that. Whoever year she was they needed this they needed to get it out. Okay so basically where you stand on notes is you wouldn't right when yourself but you don't have a big kind of reaction you don't take him personally when they're out you sort of like that person needed to get it out the time it takes to sit down and ride note are type it out and print it on a piece of colored paper like pam. Did she had two different colors. She had black ink. She had red ink. It was on a yellow piece of paper. She clearly needed to be heard in this moment. Yeah so i would just hear her. Would you clean the microwave. If it was dirty. I probably would. Wow i would probably just clean it as i mean who needs and then it's done. Well i would just clean it. If i go into the little kitchen here at ear wolf. And there's like a mess around the sink in it's not mass. I just wipe it up. Here's what i would do okay. You look very serious. That's why i'm like okay. Well i'm thinking about it in my head. I'm really trying to you know ask myself. Who am i what would i do. I'm problem-solver right. So if i kept going in the kitchen and they're kept being dirty microwave and there was no system in place for who cleans it. I would want to create that system or create that rule one hundred percent. You would make a chore wheel. Yes and we would all like on mondays. I would be in charge of cleaning the office sink yes more. It's monday microwave day. We'd give it a fun name asked. That's the cleaning day and it would rotate around. And you know part of that would be cleaner. You keep the microwave. The less work on the day you have to clean it so it'll incentivize us all to keep cleaner microwave because no one's going to want clean it on their clean day. I like that very much. Value your solution. Based i am well in the script. The microwave storyline continues. There is now another note on top of pam's original note in it says this. Hey anonymous coward. Who left the note. Be a man. Spend less time writing notes and more time cleaning up the microwave. Yeah and then. It continues throughout the episode. There would have been more notes piling up on the microwave. Not just on the microwave there on the cabinets. They ran out of space on the microwave. They're taping him to the cabinets around the microwave. There are so many notes that clearly people have written multiple notes. Because there's not even that many people in the office to weigh in on this right right. So here's one of the notes. Hey whoever was bashing the first note grow up. The microwave is filthy and no one here is made. And then there's another one that says you are all a bunch of idiots. Am privileged asks wipes who weren't raised. If i find you. I'm going to knock your teeth out. That's gotta be meredith right. Do you think it's creed. I think it's merita. I mean meredith is the obvious choice. But i think we could find out that creed wrote it lady. I think we should take a break because when we come back. Michael is about to serve up some high caliber acting. I mean watch out kurt russell. Yeah michael scott's coming for you. He sure is all right. We'll be right back lady. There are two things i like to do when i'm in a summer lounge chair. Oh okay one of them is that. "Inside so great. I did something similar. One time on the show called haters back-off we filmed the exterior in one house in the interior in another and when we were filming their exterior it was cold and kind of misty raining and they let us step inside. Just the front room. Yes we waited. We didn't go throughout their house at all but we stopped in front room. And i was steve little and we weren't really sure what to expect. We open the door to step in and there was maybe four thousand tiny dolls. Yes let their were dolls in cases all kinds of fancy dolls in every kind of case you could imagine cases on the wall little case stand on the ground they were everywhere and stephen. I stood right on the other side the door. And we're like case so somebody likes to. Oh my gosh. I would be like run and run now. It was like okay all right if you have that many dolls. There's a very good chance that one of them is gonna come alive and try to kill you. I mean if we've learned anything one of them is possessed. One of them is possessed. And you know who's on the case. The mom detective detective's we got that covered. We've got it covered. We'll hide in the bushes will figure it out. That's right so this house was so cute. What michael gallon. Berg did our set designer. He added a broken rain gutter to the outside. He changed the front door so that it would match the other location. Okay where we go inside. And he also added that swinging screen door that banks into the overhead awning. Oh that was really funny. I know and then they also asked the homeowner to turn off their sprinklers for a week leading up to the shoot to make the grass look kind of dry weather beaten and they did. They kind of killed their lawn for us. Thank you now for the interior of jim's parents house and for the garage scenes. They found unoccupied home on alad avenue which is also in van. Nuys was only a few blocks away from the other house and for this one they went in. They added the shag carpeting. They added the wood paneling. They changed the front door like they bought a front door and they put it on both houses so it would match you know so he was able to go in and completely set design. The interior of the home is it a l. l. o. T. a. l. And you say a lot or allitt Ought allitt allitt from everything. I said the thing that we're going to discuss is the street name and how to prevent it. I want you to know something. Whenever i think about like where i'm gonna live. I think about the name of the street and having to tell it to like the pizza delivery guy. I live on a lot lot. A l l oh no not allitt not a lot. I play it out in my head. You guys don't do that clearly. You'd rather live on calvert street calvert. Yes much easier for you to get your pizza on cal that's right. I'm not spelling that every single time in this is like how strongly i felt about pockets in women's clothing. This is your soapbox moment angela. Yeah i can't tell you like how many times i've had to spell my street name out the knowing not gonna say it don't need creepers you don't want anyone in your bush. I don't want anyone. Well i might want someone in my bush. But i think you already lives with you i think. Oh jeez louise oh my gosh no more or less. I don't know. I don't know we had some more questions because jim during this talking head. He's showing us as parents house and sam k. Would like to know police. Explain the clown picture in. Jim's parents house please explain yeah in the script it just says. Jim examines a hideous painting of some clowns putting out fire. He tries to pull it off all his might nothing. Jim grimaces randy. Cordray told me that that clown painting was provided. It was made original for us by one phil shays goto artists. He did not have the artist's name in his files. So we'd like to put it out there if you are listening and you are the person who painted the clown painting. Will you contact us on office. Ladies pod we want to know more but randy courtray said that the artist actually provided them with multiple preliminary choices. And that mindy. Greg paul and jen all had to stand and look at multiple clown paintings. And that's the one they chose. That was their job that day. Pick the clown painting. I was your day I had to pick a clown painting so crazy. It cracked me up that it was on the wall like that and that he couldn't remove 'cause i feel like that's such a dad move. You know it's like that moment where your mom is like. That painting is always tilted. It's always tilted. And then your dad goes and super glues it to the wall tired of it tilting. It just made me laugh. I want to know the story behind why they bolted it down. Yeah what is the story there. There's a story we don't know what it is. We don't know well now. Guess what oscar. And andy discover a note on the microwave. It's very shaming note. It is they think that the note is worse than the mass. Angela likes the note. She does meredith. Thinks that the person who wrote the note is really rich and should get off their high horse. I love this moment with this note on the microwave. I do too. It's so relatable. If you've ever worked in an office there is at least once in your time of working that office. A note stuck to something about something that people are like. Yeah and also the note where the person leaving. The note has clearly reached their limit. Yeah yeah they can't take it anymore. No the note is masking a deep. Like river of anger. just pissed. Well i think this is such a fun moment. Because we get to see pam and angela in agreement about something i think pam starts to doubt her note a little bit when she realizes that angela's on her side. Do you think out. I do well. The cool thing is that this moment at the microwave would have continued in the script. There are two talking heads here. One from pam and one from angela. and lady. I thought we could read them. I did too and they really further the story. It's so fun okay. Here was pam's talking head from the script. She's holding up the note. This is the front of the note. And then it says pam holds up a memo. This is the front of my latest office memorandum. This can only lead anyone to believe that. I wrote the note which i did and then immediately it would cut to angeles talking head and this was what was in the script. Everyone keeps asking if i wrote the note on the microwave. It was perfectly worded and a little bit snotty. I wish i had written it now. There were even more candy bag talking heads which we'd filmed as well and they ended up in deleted scenes but these are the two that were in the script. Yes and you guys. What cracks me up as well. "Know it did you really. Yeah oh yeah i did. Were you a psycho girlfriend. You know what he was cheating on me that night. Also you knew you knew. I knew it. We broke up after that. Oh man yeah. I wouldn't light up the pager. I'm like sitting here calling you psycho. I wouldn't light up the pager. But i would drive over and like hideout in a bush so much more elaborate than texting on one. Here's my plan. I was like. I know he's cheating on me so i am going to light up that pager and make it buzz so that while. They're whatever they're doing the pagers zineb. Zine yes i'm just going to ruin their good time he probably just turned it off. I guess i'm just gonna jump out of a bush and be like. Hey why did you do it. Gotcha now i'm gonna go home. Because i got twigs and my hair. And i'm embarrassed. Is this plotline for mom detectives. Should we set mom. Detectives in the past were all. We have our pagers and bush hiding. Yes oh bush hiding that can be something else. What's wrong with us. can we call it. Bush haider's we can't make any sense doesn't make any sense you. Yes hi our show. It's called bush haider's and one of your old because this is gold. And they're like what's it about and we're like it's too mom detectives. It's to older women and comfortable clothing. Yeah we're not wearing any designer clothes. We want like thirty minute. Wardrobe sessions it won't be fitted and we want a lot of old tech that no one watching it will really understand and we're going to hide in some bushes. Yeah do you want it. Okay where are we. We shouldn't have shared that on the air. Because someone's going to steal it. I guarantee you in two years you're gonna turn on. Hbo max and there's gonna be to twenty year old starring in a show called bush haider's mark my word. Mark my word and they're going to be young hot detectives and designer clothes. That's how it works in this business. I'm not jaded. Alright should we on what's happening. Who am i here. I don't know he just took a big swigert coffee. And you're like that's how it works in the business. Well listen you know what david voice tells michael. He's just going to have to deal with it. Yeah and he couldn't believe that one of his employees had been so long and he didn't know and michael let them know the annex zeki. It's icky back there. Yeah and he really wants david to get rid of toby. David says i can't get rid of him without and michael says he has caused. It's because i hate him because but that is not. Obviously 'cause they're going to find something but jonah another issue is happening. Yeah it's a day of drama in the office. Pam is preparing food in the kitchen and she discovers a mess in the microwave. Jenna yeah did you see what pam was preparing. I know it. Pam was preparing cher. This is maybe one of my most frequently asked questions outside of what was in the teapot note. No way yes. People are like what is pam microwaving in the episode with the dirty microwave. Here are some guesses we got mail. Here what people are guessing that i was microwaving. Okay apple juice. A probiotic drink k. Egg whites bone broth soup milk. Porridge and yogurt. Well i had no idea. So i look at the script but jonah you tell us it's egg whites it's eh glides which by the way knowing my bff in real life thought was kind of fitting. Yeah because you can buy egg whites in these little cups. And that's what she's doing. She's gonna microwave herself. Some guedes a lot of people also asked what was in the microwave that is also in the script and it just says like a saucy mess basically i typed it out. It says pam opened some microwave door to put in some egg whites. But the microwave is splattered all over with red sauce. Yeah now we're in the break room and whatever we title. This gyms exposed in the break room does impose your in the break room exposure in the break room. Andy i guess has peepers like a hawk and read. Jim's email and found out that jim is buying his parents house and hasn't told pam. Yeah or as kevin puts it the same house used to pee the bed in. Phyllis thinks it's romantic until she asked jim where it is. Jim says it's on linden app. And phyllis makes a face and then in the background you see me kind of roll my eyes like ooh i looked up linden avenue scranton. I couldn't find a linden. I've i found a linden street but it's sort of like in the heart of the city. There's like shops and churches and definitely no quarry nearby. Oh interesting we got a lot questions from for example brittany y and jenner be. Whose house did they use for. Jim's parents house was the interior is set or was it actual house that they used for the exterior. This is where randy cordray really came through for me and bring it home randy. I remembered that it was two different houses. We used one for the interior. And one for the exterior and randy said that our location manager kyle alexander had found several choices and that randy had really hoped that they could find a single residence that they could do both interior and exterior just because it would be so much easier to shoot it. Just one location. But it didn't work out that way. Randy said everything. They looked at either worked for the interior. But not the exterior or vice versa. So for the exterior we used an occupied home on calvert street in van nuys california but the interior was not suitable to shoe. This was because it was absolutely adorable inside and it needed to look a little jenky. Yeah it was so cute and when we were shooting there they would let john. And i step in to the house to kind of get our makeup refreshed and touched up but we would just stand right inside that front door and then we would go back outside again and that was it and it was cute inside. Oh my god. It was so cute. It was decorated like like an english professors home like just cozy cozy literary book shelves. Just beautiful kind of restored home.

Every time i worked in an office and someone brought in a baked good. It was the whole exciting moment. Heck yeah i loved it. We're not sure why they're brownies. But everyone's real happy about it. It's true we had a fan question from jessica l. That says why are they're brownies. And the conference room at the beginning of that zone was someone's birthday and then jessica would like to know. Did angela bring the brownies. Because we've heard a lot of references to angeles famous brownies. Yeah well. I looked at the script. Yeah because i had it. That's right. It says phyllis is giving away brownies but there is no further explanation as to why but it does make a note that angela is not eating. The brownies yet in the script is like angela. Why aren't you having any. Yeah pam low bit of a stir. Andy says she's dieting. My baby's trying to fit into a child size wedding gown for our big day and jim says why. And why do those exist and then angeles says it's from my pageant days. I was missed tiny mid atlantic bride. When i was ten. Why was i actually and you guys remember. This is a callback. Remember performance review season to. Angela had a talking head where she said. And i quote. I actually look forward to performance reviews i did the youth beauty pageant circuit and i enjoyed that quite a bit. I really enjoy being judged. I believe i hold up very well. Even to severe scrutiny. Well we know that you won miss tiny mid-atlantic bride when you were ten And that's my wedding dress there. I wonder how many more of these that you one. I wonder where you a big winner in your mind as the character of angela. Do you think she won quite often. Yes i think that angela. Martin like peaked at thirteen. Okay like she was. She won all like the young pageant junior pageant and then she retired. I see okay. Let us move on while we're in the conference room. Kelly is going to take to brownies one for toby. Wright and michael scoffs at this but nobody else seems to think. It's a joke now. He calls her weirdo. He's like whatever weirdo. I know and jim is like michael. Toby is back and michael's okay and so he walked back to the annex and no one's there but then suddenly someone is there and it is toby toby. I want you guys to know at one minute. Twenty three seconds as michael turns to see toby and he has that look of horror and his face. If you look at the wall behind him you will see that. There are three framed sort of things on the wall for toby. There is an award for toby. Lender sohn a certificate and diploma from the california coastal college. So do i. He had been back long enough to hang up his framed items and in the script. Toby how to talking head or he said this. I've been back for six days. I think i've even talked to him. I wish that stated me too. I wish so much had stayed in for my background. Catch folks the california coastal college. I don't think that's the thing i googled. It couldn't find it. I did find the california coast university which is a private online university based in santa ana california. Oh there you go my background people. Well we got a lot of fan mail. People wanted to know if michael's screaming no and all of that was improvised or if it was in the script in the script it just says michael turns and screams in all caps. Yeah but that whole like no god. No that was steve. That was steve's interpretation of that script note. And how was that. You guys if you read that you scream. I think most of us would just be like right yes. Steve made a meal out of that moment in the best way. He's a comedy genius. Yes you know. Screen rant did a list of the top fifteen pop. Culture references created by the office. And the meam of steve saying no is one of them. I don't doubt it. I haven't been online. Where i see people that i don't even know like respond to other people. Would just steve's face going no amazing well episode starts and michael is spiralling. He's gonna call david. Wallace is watching stupid. Toby as he shows a stupid photos of costa rica to fill us. Yeah he manages to get david on the phone by texting him. Nine one one. Call me but you know what michael said. He's learned that people will not return his calls unless he texts nine one one and now everybody does because they think something horrible happened. So i had a pager when i first got to la. So did i. You had to because you didn't know like really have cell phones. You had a pager and the only reason you had a pager was so that your agent could page you. If you got an audition and then you would have to find a phone. You'd have to find a pay phone. Call them back. Yeah i used to keep a ziplock bag full of change in my car for two reasons. One for all of them metered parking. That didn't accept credit cards coins and two so that i could find a pay phone and call my agent back when my agent paged me. Which was maybe twice a year. Oh yeah i remember one time distinctly. I was driving through santa monica with some friends. And my pager went off. I almost swerved off the road my happening. I've hit the big time. I've been paid each. We're supposed to be going to the beach. I was like i. We can't do that. I have to find a payphones. Were all like driving the streets looking payphone. I pulled over a ran into the payphone. Put my quarters in called them in there like all right. Have you ever needed any kind of glasses. I'm like what no and they're like. We have an audition for for lenscrafters. They would like people who wear glasses like. It's not me all right by him. Yeah that's pretty much it But then i did have a boyfriend. Wants who was not calling me back. Did you light up that pager. I sure did with a bunch of nine one one. You.

That's right today. we are talking about frame toby. It is season five episode nine. It is written by mindy kaeling and directed by jason reitman. That's a good deal. I'm gonna give you a summary. I was hoping you would. Michael reacts poorly to the revelation that toby is back at the scranton branch. Like the use of the word poorly. No that's an understatement. So he and dwight hatch a plan to frame toby for drugs. That michael has purchased from the to vance refrigeration employees. Gino and leo pam is incensed by a mess that is left in the microwave by one of her coworkers. We don't know who she leaves. Appointed note which elicits mixed reactions from the fellow employees. Meanwhile ryan breaks up with. Kelly and jim surprises pam with the news that he bought his parents house for them. That's a lot it's a lot. These headphones are tight. The headphones are tight new york. I fixed them under pair now. I fixed them you guys. That was jared in new york. Yep jared sam of new york. Yeah sam say hi. La there are loose headphones. Why some loose. I like a loose. Take that jared. Jared squeezing my brain with the headphones here in new york. Should we go into fast facts. I think we should alright fast fact number one. You might remember because we shared this earlier that nbc ordered twenty eight episodes for season five. It was our longest season. I remember jenna win. We wrap season five. We all got sick. Oh yeah like we all got the flu or something. Because i remember the next week texting a few people in like i have a cold. Kate was like yeah me too. Like i think our bodies were just like. Yeah a standard network. Television season usually runs on television from september to. May we work from july to march right so that we can get the episodes ready and a standard television schedule is usually where you do three weeks on one week off of filming so usually a show. We'll take one hiatus week a month but the writers always continue to work for that week week off is meant so that the writers and the producer. They have a sort of catch up week. Because they're constantly writing editing delivering the episodes. They would have these episodes in multiple forms. There like doing an outlying for one but they're writing another punching up another one. They're doing post editing on another one. They've got like five episodes going at once. We would just like be like. What are we filming this week right this year with this crazy. Twenty eight episodes season. Steve carell also had a commitment to do a film. I think it was get smart and he needed like six to eight week break from the show in the middle of that july to march filming schedule so he could film get smart. How did we ever do that in order to do that. We had to film nineteen episodes in a row. That's when we got sick. When we got sick i just have a memory punch of us getting a cold. Buck that was it. Yeah so frame. Toby was a right in the middle of this crazy. Nineteen episodes schedule oil. Yoy and here's why. I think this is significant. It's really crazy to me that they decided to bring toby back in the middle of this nineteen episodes stretch because remember he was now are show runner because greg was doing parks and rec so paul. Labor stain is now show running and acting in an episode. Again 'cause they gave him that break and now they're like sorry bud. You need to be toby again. You're back in the mix. So i reached out to jen's lada. Who's running the show with him. And i said d. You know why you did that. did you. Just want paul to never sleep. What was your plan there. And she said she can't remember exactly the reasoning but because holly had left they were either going to have to cast someone new or bring toby back and that dynamic between toby michael was beloved. She said as a fan of the show. She wanted toby to come back to that role as a co show runner. She was freaked out at the idea of paul having to wear both hats but she said he did it. So well and paul said he doesn't remember sleeping a lot off but also he enjoyed doing it you know. He liked his time on set with us. We'll i love toby coming back just because watching. Michael spiral is delicious. This is one of my favorite episodes of the season for that reason. So thank you paul for doing but thank you. My fast number two is a big. Thank you to james carey. Because he gave us the shooting draft for frame. Toby yes james. This was so fun to watch it with the shooting draft gin and i were texting each other and calling each other. Like oh my god. That's not an but this is but did you see that. It was really fun and this is a particularly amazing episode. Have the script for because this microwave runner. The dirty microwave runner. It was a much bigger in the original script. Yes and it was full of angela and pam stuff. Yes so we get to share about all that today. So thank you. James kerry thank you james kerry. We are also going to have some great location details. Thanks to randi cordray. He told me all about jim. And pam's new house. And i have to share something that randy said in his email to me when i reached out to him about this episode. Are you ready yet. He said a particular delight of looking forward to your questions. Each week is that. I get to revisit each episode to refresh my memory of what we collectively accomplished. Here's what his processes. When i write him an email. Oh he says. My process is to reread. The shooting draft watched the episode. Watch any deleted scenes and listen to any commentary that might have been recorded randy. This is what i do every week. This is too and i are doing. I said you are an office lady. You are an office lady in jena every time you email him a question. Now i'm going to be like. Don't ask them i. Don't wanna send them down a rabbit hole. I know but he really said he's really been liking it and remember when our podcast for weight loss came out and randy wrote us that nice email. Euro does the most lovely email. Yeah he was just like ladies. You nailed it. You got every bit of information. That could be known about how we did that. Engagement scene with the.

"We've not had a session in at least thirty years that we haven't had an anti lgbt bill. That's been queued up now. Most of the time were able to defeat him because moderate reasonable people realize. This'll be bad for oklahoma but the message is still out there. It's still picks up news and it still is used to volley ball back and forth between the conservatives and progressives and the liberals and the you know the folks who are trying to not live in the twenty first century and it can be very draining very discouraging but it also requires this somebody stand up and say this is not all right and you're not run me off. I'm gonna outlast you. i'm gonna wear you down. I love to tell the story. We just recently lost bill. Gaddis which was Had been state with state. Representatives karen gazza's husband. She was defeated in the election. Last fall i loved her work at the state capital and i went to church with her husband and so i attended her. Her husband's funeral this past weekend. And the one thing that stands out to me about that couple is karen. Gaddis was on the floor of the house and there was an adoption. Bill that would have said The state can give dollars to Agencies who can refuse to let lgbt people adopter foster parent and it was We had so many brave democrats and and republicans Many who stood saying this. This is a bad bill. They were trying to kill it on the floor. And so i can remember sitting there looking at karen goddess. And they're being about thirty five. You know all the democratic caucus and the republican several republicans were standing there and it sounded like some wildlife film because they were. They were saying mr speaker. Mr speaker mr speaker. And so you have about thirty five people doing that in this big statehouse building and is very resonant and i'm sitting up there and i'm watching there. And they were trying to get the speaker's attention so they could address the dangers of the bill and run out the time and of course the speaker refused to even let them speak and we had to legislators that gotten a pushing match with each other on the floor and they were on the same team. That was what was odd to me is even. They were fighting of the tension in the room and i'm sitting up in the balcony. The gallery watching this and tears. Were just running down my face and representative karen gaddis. She sends me this text and she says toby toby. I'm so sorry you're having to see this. I feel so bad for you. And i said oh no no no no. I'm absolutely thrilled. I have never.

"Toby's dinner Fader in Colombia. Is now back in action movie or the play is Elf. Yeah, my thinking, Why are they doing a Christmas show in the middle of the summer? Well, that's what they were playing last year when all this happened, so it was on the schedule. They rehearsed and you know, as as the lyrics of mangoes, we need a little Christmas. It's a great show. They're They're a little different now than before. For example, there's no salad bar. They bring you the salad. There is a buffet and you go up and you serve yourself but everybody wears Gove. You have to put a glove one. As you touch the utensils there close to 100%. Not quite. Maybe the max amount about 290 people. It's also no ice cream sundae bar like they used to have that they will bring you dessert. To the table. Um The director mark, medics, said the show the musical has a lot more than the movie. This was a movie back. Remember the movie? It was, will Farrell right? Well, fire wasn okay. Godspell is their next show, And this is one of the few dinner theaters that has live music. So that's Toby's innovator in Colombia. According to Entertainment magazine. Here are the 10 best movies. Currently playing or had recently played a new particular order. According to entertainment in the heights. Judas, Judas and the Black Messiah. Writers of Justice that's from Denmark. Zola Mo. I don't hate Kristen wig. Isn't that one? Jamie Durant? Do you know what would Barb and star to Barb and Star go to Vista Del Mar? That's okay. And opening back on Broadway on the not 14th of September. Break it Chicago and Hamilton. That's great. That's that's great news. Okay, events around town this weekend if you want to go out include a murder mystery. Called And then there were none over at Essex Community College. The Germans festivals at the Maryland fairgrounds. The BSO will be before me in Oregon Ridge Park this Thursday at seven o'clock. Don't forget the big farmers market every Sunday morning under the jfx. Howard County Restaurant Week begins Tuesday. Here's something I found out in most major cities. If you push the crosswalk button, you know, walked and walk. Chances are it really doesn't do anything. It's just they're the reason why is there they say it's just too expensive to remove them. According to statistics by the Highway Administration, you have a one in six chance of getting a speeding ticket. And the fine depends on where you live. For example, North Dakota. It's about $10. But if you're caught going 85 or more in Virginia, you could pay as much as $2000. For a ticket. And you feel old Ira and Bob? Well. Ringo Starr is now 81. And Doc Severinsen is now 94. Alright. And finally My dentist. We're not my dentist was voted dentist of the year. Now he didn't get a trophy, but they gave him a little plaque. Uh, well, he also he also got that plaque because he's probably the only person that can shut your mouth. Oh, yeah. You know what That's that's really not funny. That is funny. I'm a good judge of humor, and that's not okay. Bob before we get on fire, and I were talking about Richard Donner and also died. Who was the other guy? Robert Downey Sr So we we got to thinking about Famous Children who came from famous adults, and we came up with a list here. And if you if you want China, maybe we forgot one for it doesn't have to be in movies. It could be in television. It could be in recording, for example, Jerry Lewis. Hi, Gary. Frank Sinatra had three of them. Tina Nancy and Frank Jr. Debbie Reynolds, said Carrie Fisher. It was a Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson. Alan Arkin, Adam Arkin, car writer, Rob and we Have You had Alan Ladd's and, uh, Alan Ladd Jr. Who was Robert Alda and Alan Alda? Yes, right, Okay. Lucie Arnaz and Lucy, Judy Garland and Elizabeth Nellie. Tippi Hedren and Melanie Griffin, and that's all I have. But there's probably a lot more Bob from I give any Kirk Douglas and Michael Douglas. Okay. All right. Look, It just proves one thing. Hollywood is a bunch of nepotism. Of course. Well, some of these people like Liza are pretty pretty, uh, a sword. Talented. I think, but we have a lot of people, um, calling in here now, some of you folks, we probably won't get too because we have a right answer. For example, let's go to Tim and Savannah Park. Hey, how you guys doing? Hello? Okay. Yeah. I think the answer is the Gregory Peck and Lee Remick. Correct. You are a winner. Hey, There we go. Okay. And where do you usually go to the movies? We have down in Annapolis, Okay. Yeah. Yeah. So you go in apple small in the harbor? That's exactly right. Okay, Alright. I'm sorry, Wanda and callous. We wanted to give somebody else a chance. Yeah, well, our our theaters are not that far from you. We have a Marley station and in Sun Valley in Pasadena. They're perfect. That's great, Okay? Well, stay on. And somebody who, uh, take all your information. Vernal. Get your stuff. Okay. Thank you. Here's somebody named Victory. Is that the right name in silver spring? Some of the victor. Okay, Go ahead. Go ahead, Victor. There you go. Um, I'm calling in because, um, I'm legally blind and I just don't watch new t V or movies that much at all anymore. Um, it's become much much too visuals, and I prefer watching the old T V shows of YouTube when my fiance is over at the House. And the few times I have gone to the movies in the last few years. The audio description never works right and she has to end up describing. What's what's going on. And I really and truly wish that the script riders would do what they used to do. Um, when television first came out They were so used to writing radio scripts that I could follow the dialogue and know what was going on. For instance, if there was a fight scene, one of the characters will say, beaten and sobbing. Made this guy tell me where he hid the gold. And, you know, stuff something like that. Or if there's a letter being read, Um you'll hear the person reading the letter. Um, as you know, thinking out loud. It sounds like a little bit of an echo, and you can Hear her reading the letter. Now someone's got to read that because they don't even bother, uh, doing that anymore. So I guess that's my big beef with With Hollywood make the movies more audio descriptive. Just write it into the script, and then you don't have to have audio descriptions. Okay? Alright. Victor's follows wcbm night and day, So thank you, Victor. Kate, I know you have something. Someone that died this week. What? We're gonna do a break first, right then. And then we'll get back to kill. Okay again. This is movie talk. We're coming back..

With ‘The Underground Railroad,’ Barry Jenkins looks squarely at Black trauma
"Underground railroad was a network of abolitionists routes to free slaves. But what if it was an actual railroad with a train chugging toward freedom? That's the premise of Colson Whitehead's Pulitzer Prize winning novel, now adapted by Barry Jenkins into a 10 episode miniseries. This isn't a straightforward, inspirational narrative like Harriet. This combines the brutality of roots with the social commentary of watchman and a hint of magical realism like the Polaroids. Press to some ADO is empathetic as the lead Joe Edger tennis sinister as the villain, slave catcher and child star chased Dillon is his precocious psychic. I still have eight episodes to go. But judging by the first two were in for a powerful train ride by a master conductor. I'm Toby Toby film critic Jason Fraley, giving the underground railroad for five stars. So far, dolphin

"Toby and chilies crazy for his day. He is Joe from Sterling. Run it down for us, Joe. What happened? Well, it was a simple as it was a bumble day. I decided that I had always wanted to go to being up in Harpers Ferry. So asked her to go and she was game for it and so awfully headed. We're getting to the edge of the rapid. She looks up River and she says it looks like there's a storm on its way. I looked and I said, Ah, you know, well out run, it will be on the run. Happens here, she says. I don't know. I think we should go back. I'm not having it because I paid for the date and it's not really a cheap date. I said no, we're doing this. We're going down the rapids and then the storm starts coming. So she says, I'm going on these rocks with these other people. And I said Fine by now. I knew it was really not going too well. I went on ahead well, the storm breaks and people are clinging to the rocks in the middle of the river and stuff covering themselves and me and a study group of Of other paddlers kept on with it, and I mean it rained so hard you couldn't see 20 ft. It's lightning, and it's just a heck of a storm. My only last 10 minutes, you know, blows right over us. And finally I get down to the end of the rapid and I'm looking for my date, and I don't fear and people keep coming ashore. And so finally, after about 30 minutes, I see two tubers with two guys and a girl in between them and they're bringing order show and she does not look places. And she staggers up onto the shore. And I'm like, Oh, boy, I was I was kind of great. I didn't know where you work. She doesn't say a word to me. When we get back on the past, we go back to the staging area and we get to look to the car to come home. She turns to me. What point did you think this was a good idea? Shrug and I dropped her off at her apartment. You know, after I pulled away, I laughed so hard. I had to pull into the Wegmans parking lot. I laughed and So I cried because because of such a disaster that itwas and that's my story, and there was never a second day. I should add that no Tex return. No calls were picked up. That was it. I never thought that would be it, Joe. You know, you really are such a chivalrous man. What the heck were you thinking? How do you think she'd react? You just you just completely deserted her. It wasn't that fun of a date, and I wasn't terribly broke. Hard about it. No kidding, Right. So everybody beware. Tubing on shit in Doha at Harper's Ferry. Perhaps not a good idea for first. Well, maybe next time you could try taking them to glory Days. Grill. Here's a $50 gift card for you to come.
