So to me, there is immense pressure on Derek Carr, not to be careless with the football not to hone in too much on Davante Waller and Darren Waller to consider more hunter Renfro perhaps and take what's giving to him not to force it because he has skill players who can easily pick up yards up to the catch. It's the oldest rivalry in the league and can the packers avoid falling to O into after a very disappointing start last week, while some good news could be on the way in the form of wide receiver Allen lazard plus two star tackles and left half of left tackle David bakhtiari and Elton Jenkins, all three of those players are listed as questionable, seemingly closer to playing this week than they were last week. Saquon Barkley and Christian McCaffrey have been the kings of fantasy football in previous years. Saquon Barkley was the highest corn running back in fantasy and all of week one. Christian McCaffrey has been incredible, even after a quiet week one, it would be great to see these two on the field and can Christian McCaffrey restore order and be back atop the running back fantasy score leading board would not be surprised. Field, let's go to ravens versus dolphins, both Lamar Jackson and villa are coming off of week one wins in Baltimore three and a half point favorites in this one it is at home for them. "They can win games by playing defense and running the football. They did hold Tom Brady and company to 19 points during that frustrating game on Sunday Night. So that's a viable formula in the short term. And for the forty-niners, who might not want to trade Jimmy Garoppolo a way to an historic rifle in the NFC, who didn't exactly get a great game from their offense in those terrible conditions in week one against the bears, they might not be quite as dashboard to trade Garoppolo as they would have been three or four weeks ago. So, outside of first take, I don't see this one happening, but I guess Stranger Things have occurred in the NFL. Yeah, I do want a Stephen a Smith quotient to be considered as an advanced metric and evaluating football decisions. I do want value over replacement take to matter when it comes to constructing your football team. But the other injury here, the other replacement that we got to talk about is what happens with TJ watt and the Steelers and him tearing his pec against the Bengals. While painting a masterpiece, it felt like at the time to me, Bill, just watching him be the best offensive player in the league, seemingly leading the best defense in the league. And so what does this do to the Steelers D right now? Yes, and speaking of Lehman doctors, TJ watt came off the field and immediately said, I tore my pec, which is pretty impressive, frankly. Get that man a giant cowboy hat. This is a really interesting one. I asked to find a bell who does excellent work at ESPN, breaking down injuries, said what might be able to come back after rehab without surgery and reports today have suggested that what does not require surgery and could come back after 6 to 8 weeks, which sounds great. The Steelers obviously would rather have TJ white for the entire season, but getting it back after two months would be great. Also, and this is maybe not appropriate medical science, but I'm not a doctor. I don't have a big cowboy hat so I can say this. The wat family is not built of the same stuff as normal human beings like you and I Pablo. And we have one very notable exception to the track record of torn pictorials causing season ending injuries and it happens to be TJ Watt's brother JJ watt, who tore his pectoral muscle in mid season for the Texans. That's right. Why not IR for 8 weeks, came back for practice and forced way back onto the field at the very end of the season? Was expected to play a few snaps and because he's JJ watt and basically does not have to listen to anybody because he's a freak of nature. Basically played in every down role in the playoffs, helping the Texans get to the second round of the postseason that year. But hold on, just be very extra clear here about the injury prognosis. So saying that unlike with Andy Reid's preferred style of rib. Oh, tough. TJ watt does not want his meat here to be falling off the bone. No, he does not. But I also think if you told TJ watt, we could just slap some barbecue sauce on it and he'd be fine. I think he'd probably go with it and play the upcoming Sunday. Yes. And even though they're not going to have TJ one on Sunday and probably not for a few more weeks, it's a huge victory for the Steelers to have TJ watt coming back at all in 2022, because this is not a very deep defense. And it's a defense that is going to have to win this team games as we saw on Sunday. Alex highsmith, who plays across from watt in the Pittsburgh defense, did rack up three sacks in the season opener, but it's difficult to imagine him being quite as effective without the reigning defensive player of the year drawing attention away from him. Malik read just joined the Steelers last month. He's likely going to be there starting outside linebacker coming up this Sunday. But when you talk about the lack of depth on defense Bill, which is a little jarring for me to hear given how good I consider that unit to be, what are the Steelers really as they are now at this ecstatic one to know? Guess Pablo on one hand, when you win a game, you beat the AFC defending champions, you force 5 takeaways. That's all good. There's nothing wrong with doing that. But let's compare this to history Pablo. When you look back over the last 20 years and see what happens when a team wins the turnover battle by 5 takeaways, like the Steelers did on Sunday, they went a lot. They're 97 three in one historically. Those teams win by an average of more than 20 points. You blow teams out when you win the turnover margin by 5. The Steelers did not pull out the Bengals popular. They needed overtime, they needed a blocked extra point. They needed a miss 29 year old field goal by the swaggiest kicker in football, Evan McPherson. And that only happened because the Bengals had an injured long snapper and could not get a snap down for that 29 yard field goal attempt. The Steelers needed all of that to win the game on the final play in overtime on a field goal of their own. Pablo, that happened because the offense is bad. It is a bad offense in Pittsburgh. They scored 16 points. Against the Bengals, on 13 possessions. And that was mostly with naji Harris their first round picket running back from a year ago who appeared to re aggravate the list Frank injury to his foot, he suffered during the preseason. Harris, who apparently has a big hat, said he expects to play this weekend, but it's unclear whether he's with 100%, or likely to make it through the entire game, which he did not do last week. The Steelers just do not have much at running back behind their star runner, who averaged 2.3 yards per carry while maybe struggling with this foot injury in the opener. And on top of that, miss trubisky, who was making his first start. Yes, we meet again, mister biscuit. His first start since leaving the Chicago Bears looked a lot like the midstream whisky we all know and love. The former MVP played like an envy covered in slime. It felt like he was getting the slime off after a year in Buffalo. In Cincinnati last week. The average just over 5 yards per pass of time. That's just really bad as bad as it gets for a quarterback in 2022. And the big plays he made that pushed that number two 5 came on a screen where he didn't do much work. A flea flicker, a free play, and a ridiculous one handed catch from Deontay Johnson on what was admittedly a terribly thrown past Pablo. We will see eventually in the long term if the Steelers do turn to Kenny Pickett, their first round pick, who looked excellent during the preseason and starts the year as Pittsburgh's backup. But nothing about trubisky's performance on Sunday, suggests he's going to be even an average quarterback in 2022. So if the Steelers say don't force 5 takeaways again and for the second week in a row, I don't think the offense can hold up their end of the bargain moving forward. But Bill, you know that the most important statistic of all, of course, is that mister biske is want to know. That's true, Pablo, I don't know if you want to point out. The bills went want to know, Mitch trubisky, who played for the bills last year, won his first start, writing table, who was the offensive coordinator from the bills, won his game with the Giants of his debut as the head coach, maybe the NFL solution is just to rub some more bills on it. "At the quarterback has led the team on a 6 game winning drive on 6 game winning drives this season. Second most in the NFL he's been clutch when it matters most. For both of these quarterbacks, it will come down to who will play better under pressure as both of these teams have two of the league's best pass rushers raiders max Crosby and Bengal spray hendrickson ranked first and fourth respectively in total pressures this season. So a lot of pressure no matter what, but Ryan can Crosby and the Raiders de line get after Joe burrow. Listen, they can get after Joe burrow and we've seen that happen throughout the season. And when you go back to last week and watch the Los Angeles chargers. I mean, obviously, Justin Herbert had a phenomenal day, but he was under pressure. He was under siege the entire day, and that's with rashon slater locking down one side of the field. So they're gonna have to get after Joe burrow and one thing you know about Joe is he doesn't give up on plays. Joe burrow is gonna hit that spin move. Try to scramble, get outside the pocket and create second play opportunities for his skill players downfield and that's when guys like max like Yannick can get to him, try to force funds or even hopefully get bad passers thrown on the fields to get intercepted. If you can turn over to Cincinnati Bengals, I think that's when we've seen this team struggle. You saw it against the Los Angeles chargers. You saw it against the Cleveland Browns. If those things begin to happen, those are the best chances for the Las Vegas Raiders to capitalize, gain leads and then make the Cincinnati Bengals play from behind. It Ryan is absolutely right. The biggest mismatch the Raiders have in this game is their edge rushers versus the Bengals tag was particularly on the right side, having lost O'Reilly reef for the season. However, the biggest mismatch for the Bengals is their wide receivers TA is Jamar chase against and that is why. I am betting the exact Taylor. You took the governor out the go kart man. There's no going back now. I do not want to see a different game plan. I do not want to see early down runs because you're afraid of your quarterback getting hit. Joe burrow is going to get sacked in this game, but it doesn't matter because he's going to make enough place to keep this offense humming. This is the offense that got them into the postseason and see offense I want to see in this game. Yeah. It just warms my heart to see my colleague talk about D line play. One of those ways to keep Joe burrow in this explosive offense on the sideline is Josh Jacobs y'all. He had a phenomenal game kind of got lost in the shuffle a little bit because Justin Herbert made so many tremendous plays throughout the end of that game, but if you think about how he was able to control, like let's point at the perfect example, the last possession of the game. Against the Los Angeles. When you had the habit, when you had to move the change, Josh Jacob was that guy. And I seen by it seems to me that we forget about him. I know he's had some injuries in being hampered, but when Josh Jacobs is healthy, this is a physical run game. This is a grand UI run game. So I'll be interested to see how much they put that forward in Las Vegas to make sure they can keep Joe burrow in the sideline a little bit longer. I mean, there's more than one reason that's important. It's obviously important for ball control, but it's also important because it leads to the play action pass of Derek Carr. And we're talking about Joe burrow and those skill players, but we can not forget what Derek Carr has done this entire season and especially down the stretch. So if Josh Jacobs get going, gets going and now you open up that play action pass, that's a great way to attack the secondary of the Cincinnati Bengals without having to worry about Trey hendrickson so much up front. Yeah, during the Raiders win streak right Waller's big two during this four game win streak Josh Jacobs averaging over a 110 scrim yards per game at 6 most in the NFL since week 15, he's been really good, also got healthy at the right time. Let's show who we're picking in this day. You know, I try to fix the curse the last time, but I didn't try to do it this time. So we're all in the Bengals. Uh oh. Uh oh, good luck. There you go. I don't think he'll create enough explosive place for them to score outside of the red zone and we know the New England Patriots when they get down and have opportunities to score. They're gonna lead heavily on this run game and the offensive line and you mentioned it early allure. The captain said it Damien Harris has been big for this team against the Buffalo Bills. I expect him to get the ball in scoring territory. Marcus, he set a regular season sack record last week, does TJ watkin another on Sunday against the chiefs and Patrick Mahomes? "The second half for mason Rudolph. But I'm strangely going to be a tiny bit more optimistic than Ben Roethlisberger appears to be about his own team and his own career. In this situation, because I feel like that game was a really unlucky outcome for the Steelers. No, I don't think they should have won that game by any means. I lost by 26 points. That's they deserve to lose. Let's go. What happened though, then? What happened was fumbles essentially. The evidence tells us Pablo, whether it's the numbers, whether it's looking back at history, whether it's just watching a football bounce around on these incredible athletes desperately try to pick it up with limited success. We know that fumble recovery rates are random from game to game from drive to drive from year to year. You can't count on recovering a particularly high or low percentage of the fumbles. And then NFL game. There are 5 levels in that game. We'd expect each team to get about two and a half instead, the cheese got 5 of those fumbles, the Steelers got zero. In a game where you're a huge underdog, like the Steelers are against the chiefs. You have to have that luck go your way for you to win that game. The game we saw a couple of weeks ago, that was an example of what happens when all the bouncers go the chiefs way. The Steelers can afford to win a game where not only a better team than them, but also getting lucky in the process. So you've got to figure that's not going to happen again. The reason I think the Steelers are going to fail to recover every fumble in that contest. And I think we're sort of making some illusions between the Steelers chiefs game and the Bengals raiders game. I think there's another application here as well. And I think it's the fact that a pass rusher might be the difference maker. Next cross may be flying underneath the radar a bit. You can't say that about TJ watt the presumptive defensive player of the year. And I think the guy who could flip this game for the Steelers. Mike Crosby, TJ white lines up on the left side of the defense, across from right tackle. Like the Bengals. The chief of down to a backup tackle, not just their second stringer, but their third stringer Pablo, an Andrew Wiley, who played by tackle for the chiefs in the Super Bowl, where we saw a great defensive line, pick the chiefs apart and win. Phil, I love the idea of like, you played for this team in the Super Bowl being something that's actually a grand indictment. If you remember that Super Bowl. It takes about two seconds to think, oh no, I don't want to repeat that time where I did the greatest thing I'll ever do by playing in a Super Bowl. I think that tells you how bad it went for the chiefs in that game. I mean, I think if we're talking about a crazy steelers I've said Monday morning, it's almost impossible for me to imagine that happening without teaching what playing one of the best games of his entire career. So if you're gonna be watching TJ watt in particular in this one on the defensive end, I want to ask you about how the chiefs are shaping up on offense because I know the chiefs offense is the chief's offense. You know, that's tautological, but also accurate. I feel like, you know, but if they do win this one as Big Ben predicts and they get onto the divisional round, what is the deal with tyreek hill gonna be like, what's it like right now actually? Because I know he has this heel injury, but he also has not had a play apparently over 50 yards since week one, so what's going on here? I do like that you're explaining that Big Ben predicts the chiefs will win because this leads to a possible Tom Brady paradox where Tom Brady says he predicts the other team to win and then says nobody believed in us when they upset. It's very troubling to us as content producers as it might be a possibility. With tyreek hill, I think it's a combination of things. I mean, first and foremost, I feel like it's almost agnostic at this point, bringing up the words too high in relation to the chief's offense. But the word cloud of NFL discourse Bill has two and high in like a 150 points. It's all we had. It's all we had during the 2021 season. It was that in COVID to work with. I mean, during the regular season, this would happen though, the chief saw a ton of 2D coverages to date safeties, take away those big plays. Other teams were kind of going to let them do anything else they wanted an offense that you said I think the highest third down conversion rate in league history or close to it based on how they open space they had to work with underneath. But teams were willing to do that to take away those big plays from tyreek hill. And then I think on top of that, it's clear hillside a 100%. I mean, go back to week 16. "Their home opener this past sunday. Ceiling their eighty ninth straight season without going undefeated only five. Nfl franchises have a longer streak of losing at least one game. Yes that is me telling you to settle down and find some perspective after disappointing steelers loss. It is after all along season at this point. The steelers could still win the super bowl or they could lose sixteen games. There's lot more of this story to right but that doesn't mean there isn't anything to talk about today. We're gonna talk about what went wrong. Against the the las vegas raiders from the steelers defense to the run game to ben rothlisberger. I'm your host jeffrey benedict. Welcome to the cutting room floor. We're start with what we saw this weekend. And before we dig in too much. I just wanna say that. Now it's time for a little braggadocio. While i wave my arms like ralph macho My keys to this game heading into week. Two i gave an x factor for the raiders. I was with marquis de on the steelers. Touch down on die in that show. I called henry runs the third as being a potential game changing player. Because with the steelers paying attention to darren waller rudd's was that guy that could break a huge play and break open what i expected to be a largely. A close scored defensive battle. Well yeah that kind of happened. That kind of happened with the steelers. Don't have a ton of speed in the secondary. Terrell edmonds is their fastest defensive back so if you get isolation on the outside and i believe the play Rugs broke for sixty. One yard touchdown. He he was on a callow. Witherspoon was on him again. I predicted that before. I knew joe haden was going to be out for the game But they got they got. Henry runs the third on. Are number four defensive back which really really. He's our number six. We're just missing are one of our top guys and we were sat james. We sat justin lane. Sorry lots his name for a second. We justin lane forever and boom sixty. One yard touchdown. That really broke that game open. So i kinda caught that one. Not that i'm happy about that One of my other main keys to this game was the steelers winning the interior line battle. i made that my kids game. 'cause watching the the ravens raiders games. What stood out to me. Is that while. Derek carr was getting pressured around the edge quite a bit second half of the game. He starts being able to step up into a clean pocket. And when derek carr can step up into a clean pocket. He's a really good quarterback when you put people in his face is not nearly as good so car against the steelers. One of my things was we. Gotta we gotta keep guys in his face. We can't step up into the pockets. So that the pressure from the edges can get to him well. Tj wise was absolutely crushing. When he was in this game he was playing phenomenal. He was doing a fantastic job. And for those snaps the longest pass. Play with watt on the field with seventeen yards and there wasn't a single deep attacked a deep throw attempt by derek carr with tj lot on the field through the point tj. By got injured. There was not a single deep pass through by car. Tj what left the field the very first play after tj Left the field with his injury was a twenty five yard. Pass to second tied foster moreau. And when worse from there by the end of the game derek carr had thrown eight deep passes connected on five of them for one hundred sixty four yards and a touchdown the reason he was able to do. That is because with tj white gone and simply cam hayward in there being the only real big time threat. The raiders were able to give. Derek carr a clean pocket and he was able to look downfield. See what was happening and make take take shots. Take good shots. Downfield step into his throws make throws without being hit. They won the game. The moral of that story is even with steph onto it out. Even with bud duprey gone end. Advertisement is a good player. But we've seen. He's he's struggling this season. A bit with this step up responsibility and the step up in in attention. The he's gotten he's not getting socks he doesn't even have a. Qb hit yet this season. But even with him there with tj with steph onto it out tj white and cameron. Heyward are a lot to deal with. And what hayward and supporting staff of chris warmly. Alex highsmith marlin ingram. Melvin ingram is playing really well but he's not tj. Why he's not cameron heyward. He's not on their level. Hayward watt and supporting staff is a lot to deal with just cam hayward and supporting staff wasn't not too much for a banged up raiders. Offensive line they were able to shift the pocket to count for hayward Hayward's penetration and really the offensive line. Just had to steer cameron heyward to one side of the pocket and let derrick walk. Go the other way. Well when cameron heyward can say okay You know i'm gonna rush. I'm going to penetrate. And i'm going to go to the right side from the defensive perspective. I'm gonna rush to the right side of the pocket and cause havoc. There will have tj one on the left. You can't just be like okay. I'll take a step to the left. No you're taking a step towards teach what you're taking a step towards getting lit up. You're taking a step towards a fumble. You know you are taking a step towards a big defensive play. You can't do it with just hayward gable step outside. That was a huge problem for the ravens. That's big reason. The ravens lost is they were not able to contain derek. Carr they were. They were not able to crash his pocket. They were not able to put people around his legs bodies around his legs people in his face hands on you know threatening to swat the football away. They weren't able to do that. And the raiders came back on with car. Throwing deep downfield the steelers. Despite the success they had defending. Darren waller like i said before. They're one of the best at defending tight ends in the national football league the last three seasons since they Drafted devin bush brought in Tara lawson and brought in a mega fitzpatrick. They've been one of the best they did again. That was different. But it didn't matter because in the end when they could not disrupt derek cars pocket derek carr was able to throw downfield for five of eight for one hundred sixty four yards and a touchdown. You're not gonna win a game when you give that up to the opposing quarterback and you're offenses in scoring. Yeah that's a shootout. If you're giving up deep passes like that. That's a shootout as over twenty yards per attempt on deep balls. You don't even know what the steelers putting up on. Those numbers was it was awful talking about darren. "I had the jets winning twenty four twenty one so was all the way wrong on that one right next game was a solid one though very good competition between two great organizations pittsburgh steelers versus the buffalo bills for this game. I had buffalo winning twenty six twenty I wasn't terrible on the score. But i was wrong on. Who's gonna win Yeah pittsburgh steelers took this one twenty three to sixteen actually And i mean stand out performance from linebacker. Tj why with two sacks five qb hits and a tackle for a loss all over the place. There's still somebody out there that had a better performance in him but very solid situation for him absolutely and the steelers. Let's talk about the steelers. Defense was always going to be the strength and that was especially evident. Has it kept the game. Close in the first half in spurred the second half comeback Yeah they needed to warm up. First half was a little shaky for pittsburgh. Second half is definitely when it got it done. It made his win. Happened of pittsburgh's twenty unanswered points. Seventeen were the result of two bills. Turnovers on downs and a block plant slash return touchdown which was put into motion when cameron heyward had a third down sack on josh allen. One play early. Tj white just off. The mass of payday had sex and was disruptive forced out the afternoon. The bills managed to convert seven of sixteen third downs. But they were oh into on fourth downs. The offense has work to do all right. They have to work out some of these pains that they had early on but the defense showed sunday. It's more than capable of basically buying off some time. I think they were having a lot of confidence in what they're bringing to the table in the rain game immediately and it just didn't it didn't clock out that way. It's just not high went down as for the bill. Despite a dominating defense defensive effort in the first two quarters the bills allow twenty straight points to the steelers coming out of the half and lost a commanding lead The defense allow pittsburgh to put together three drives of nine plus plays in the second half along and failed the Generate assistant pressure against a young offensive. So it's a tough team to beat if you're not completely prepared warm everything like that Accuracy downfield proved to be a problem for josh allen. One passes a career high in pass attempts for two hundred seventy yards against the steelers and had trouble connected with both stefan digs air colby's The offensive line one of the teams biggest questions. coming incidents also struggled with allen's limited movement which played a part in the steelers not needed to blitz release. So they just you know he's gonna stay the pocket they didn't have to keep them in the pocket But we also know what josh cable of outsider pocket. So was this. Josh was coaching thing. Not sure but i'm sure going forward we will learn more about the team This is a team that i feel like we still. We still have high expectations for them as being a conference champion contender for sure for for sure. Okay that that's out of the question. That should be very obvious But it is not easy to make a decision on really both teams yet. Really both teams. We need to see like just come back in the second half and come back with a win. That doesn't say enough of bain was looking real sloppy in the beginning in run game gotta have often. I mean defense wind championship but offense deadly helps get you there as for sure. So that's something that both sides can look into san francisco versus the detroit lions. I had the oh. I had a winning twenty eight to seven will towards the end of the game. It's big place can turn games around now. Who makes big plays great. Athletes make big plays steelers have some great athletes particularly on defense looking at minka fitzpatrick. "Know on the steelers favor it's really not tj. What has a lot of leverage simply because you one you can't replace him to you have a lot of stuff tied up in him. And if you if you play hardball with him you you're gonna lose a ton of money of ton of money spent on the team. The team's not going to spend the money but they're not going to be able to spend that money to improve the team and they're not going to have a player for that money they're going to get nothing for it just like they did in two thousand eighteen would instead of addressing holes at the defense. They played hardball with love. You on bell seriously hurt us in a season where ben roethlisberger led the nfl in passing. We have added another running back any running back on free agency that we wanted. We could've added a better inside linebacker. Jon bostick we have added a safety. We could've added cornerback. You added a running back and linebacker in pretty much any other player you wanted and still had more cap space than they did with levy on bell sitting now. My point is the money. Tj white wants. Pittsburgh needs to pay it. And i think they're going to. I honestly don't think we're going to see these hardball situations. Fans are going to right now because we approached the season and tj wad isn't signed but those hardball situations. Don't make sense for the team. It's not like oh. Tj what you screwed up steelers are going gonna win this and you're gonna lose no you don't you don't win by having less talent on the field right. You don't do that so for me. It's an easy choice. "The steelers inside linebacker. They signed in free agency in two thousand. Eighteen was named john bostick. His first year cap was under seven hundred thousand dollars. He was cheap. The highest first year cap hit for two thousand inside linebacker. Free agent was six million dollars. I went through. It looked at the two thousand eighteen contracts in their first year. Hits for that fifteen million dollars. The steelers could assigned any inside linebacker. Running back and safety. They wanted and their cap. It would have been less than they paid to not have levy on the field though restate that they could have signed any inside linebacker safety and running back free agent that season and the cap hit in two thousand eighteen would have been lower than what the steelers paid to play. Hard ball with le vian bell if they do this with. Tj why and tj white says. Look i already showed you. I'm not playing this game right. You're gonna pay me and i'll be the best. I'll be the ideal player. i'll be the ideal teammate. I'll be everything you want me to be. But you're going to pay me what i want. And they say no. We're going to franchise tag you in tj watson. I'm gonna sit out then. I'm not gonna play not okay. You're two thousand twenty two. The projected cap it for outside linebacker. Which is for. I should say it's all linebackers is eighteen million right. You're gonna put eighteen million of a cap hit into playing hardball with tj. Y and you're not gonna be able to spend that money until you start getting back in the middle of season. I don't know if you know this. But there's a lot of great high end free agents available in november no one size too high priority free agents in november when that money from levian bell came off the books in twenty nineteen. The steelers won out and they signed steven nelson. They signed mark barron. Both those players played a role in the steelers solving the problems. They had the year before in two thousand eighteen. The steelers were one of the worst teams defending titans in two thousand nineteen. They were one of the best complete flip they signed. They drafted devon bush. That played a pretty good role labor and they signed mark baron. That played a pretty good role to they had steven nelson other receivers didn't need as much help make of. It's patrick played a role in that but mostly it was the guys covering the tight ends which vault mark barron he did that. A lot though signings signings like that occur when you have cap space. We've seen the steelers us cap space. Well in twenty twenty one. Twenty twenty two tj. Let's no. i'm not playing on this franchise tag and the steelers say we're tagging you anyways. The steelers aren't going to be able to replace teachers. They're going to tie up so much. Money in tj y and get nothing for it except a rollover for the next season that they can use to again spend a whole bunch of money out of their cap to simply play hardball with tj. Meanwhile if you know this ben rothlisberger might be gone. Tj tj want to sit out this year that would actually be less bad for the steelers enfranchise tagging him like how. How far does this go. Everyone everyone talks. Tj white has no choice but just to play for the next three years in the steelers have control over how much he gets paid with the franchise tag and with this year option. But when you sit and you have a large chunk of your salary cap with no productivity out of that money even if you don't actually spend the money and you get that cap hit back at the end of the year. "The pittsburgh steelers played their third preseason games the twenty twenty one season their first at heinz field. And the first one to see almost all of the starters play today we will look at what the steelers showed us and their matchup against the lions both the good and the bad. An last week show talked a lot about the inside linebackers then at heinz field this week we got to see devon bush and new steeler joe schober play together for the first time as a pairing. They showed promise but also showed that they need more time than bush still needs time to get back fully from his injury and get up to. Nfl speed joe. Schober needs time to get accustomed to his defense to the steelers defense and his new teammates. Bush looked a little rusty. Like you would expect. He had a few plays where he approached a gap in the run game wrong. At least one time. He overran a play shumpert for his part. Look slow on his reactions and his assignment something you expect when a player is thinking about their role on a given play what their assignment is instead of. Just being able reaction la- relax employees. These are things that are going to work themselves out. These two guys need time. Need time in the steelers defense and they need time together. They're going to be all right. Now in bush and schober off the field they were replaced by roberts poulain and marcus allen those who played the rest of the game that was the steelers played. Four linebackers devin bush. Joe show bert roberts lane and marcus allen buddy. Johnson didn't play on defense at all. He only played on special teams where he does has looked good and he made a tackle in that game. Roberts spelane looks like he's locked down the job of the number three linebacker after you know. We thought he was going to be the number two guy. He's moved back to number three with the addition of schober. And i like him a lot better in that number three linebacker role. Marcus allen looked good. He has looked a lot better than he looked last season in this. Preseason he's really good in coverage on running backs and tight ends and even when he's thrown on a a you know a depth wide receiver. He's looked good He also has improved at hud. Blitzing where the steelers you know if you're on the running back especially if you're on the running back and the running backstays into block the is covering them turns into a blitzer and adds into the pass rush. Marcus allen is looking good there we saw him with a couple of pressures and with half a sack in this game. I think marcus. Allen is leading the battle to be the number for linebacker over buddy johnson over any of the camp bodies over anybody else. I think it's right now. It's devon bush. And joe schober is your starters. You've got roberts splaine as your number three linebacker and i think marcus allen is really solidified his hold on the number four linebacker spot and that pushes buddy johnson to number five on the linebacker list. Now the steelers generally keep four to five inside linebackers and forty-five outside linebackers for usually right around nine linebackers. Total is what they keep and that fifth the fifth at each position either position. Normally you've got you've got four outside linebackers four inside linebackers and then usually you get one more either outside or inside linebacker. Who's mostly gonna play special teams now with buddy johnson being fourth round. Pick and frankly he's looked good. He's looked talented. He shows a lot of promise he's just also showed he may not be ready for. Nfl snaps right now. But he's not. He's not ready to be a player. You rely on marcus. Allen roberts plane. They're ready. they're ready to be that player. So while buddy. Johnson really isn't one of the top four inside linebackers. He's a fourth round. Pick who shown promise. He's playing on special teams. He's playing while he had a special teams tackle against the detroit. Lions i think buddy johnson makes squad as the number five linebacker with a bit of a redshirt season. because i mean he's a fourth round. Pick any looks good and he looks like what you want to be like next year. He could be an upgrade on both splaine and marcus allen the way he looks right now he just needs experience he needs that seasoned to learn to grow. By the end of the season he could be moved up into a higher tier. The right now. He's not there by his promise. Says you can't really let him go. Which means for me. Seals are keeping five inside linebackers. They almost have to you. Can't you can't send your number four linebacker off the team. you're not. you're not cutting marcus allen. You're not cutting robert spelane. You're gonna keep them. You're going to have to keep buddy johnson too. What stands out to me. In that is we're now looking at if we're keeping five inside linebackers. We're only likely to keep four outside linebackers and three of those are set. Tj what's gonna comeback at some point. They're going to pay him. He's going to be he's going to be back playing for the steelers. Not just practicing by himself. Alexander smith has looked. Phenomenal and melvin. Ingram is a lock. He's our number three guy and he looked really good against the lions which is also allow the steelers to ease. tj white back in if he sits out most of the preseason you know if he misses if he misses the whole season they can still eat him in to game action. Because they have melvin ingram behind those three why highsmith in ingram the steelers have two young edge rushers who are competing and playing well in jamir jones and quincy roce. Now the buddy johnson marcus allen situation. Where really buddy. Johnson's almost locked to make this team as the number five inside linebacker in his all night opinion guys. It does if you want but but honestly is hard to argue against that top ten. I mean again. There might be a guy here there. You wanna put in there. But i do have a huge problem with that.
