"Here's the Jacksonville Jaguar safety in year four talking plainly. I'm just like so happy for Trevor because a, he had to deal with urban Meyer last year as a rookie and I don't even know if he had a rookie year and to see the growth he's made, not just on the field, but just like his preparation. His demeanor, all that. And you knew, when The Rock breaks, it's not that one chip, it's all the chips that stacked up before that. And I'm so happy for him. That throw on fourth down to say it was like, I knew we were winning the game. Honestly, like I could feel it. It was so cool. And then you believe that your coach all that year and for him to go for two. What was that like when he does it? The stones on that guy. It's like, I would die for Doug Peterson. I swear. I would run into battle with Doug Peterson, 100%. I love the guy and just his attitude, you know? It's like you're three and 7 and it's like, you know, you want to make playoffs and stuff and it's like he hasn't changed his attitude whatsoever. It's like we come into work. We keep working. We just keep chipping away and eventually it's going to pay off and it did today and it's like the feeling in the locker room is just awesome. I love this team. I love this thing. Wow, man. That was cool. Interesting. Making sure you had the right season. Not even sure he had a rookie season. Damn. I mean, this is week 12 in the NFL. Good lord three months of football games on top of training camp on top of many camp on top of off season workout program. The page has been turned, man. Has it been the coach for a long time? Age has been turned in that locker room. With urban rom Myers a rookie. They're still remembering. I mean, that's so funny. It's unbelievable. That's crazy. So yeah, bring back the guy who had the worst flame out embarrassing flame out. Social media viral flame out. In the history of National Football League coach, bring that guy back to college. In college, different guy. Yeah, 'cause he could just put his authoritarian stamp and thumb on the kid. Have the kid show everyone what his resume is made of. I mean, for that to happen, the day after Michigan curb stomps Ohio State in the horseshoe and urban sitting there saying they're going to stop the run. They'll stop the run. They fix the defense. Doesn't happen, the fan base is in full pitchfork and torch mode, begging for urban to come back on national television, embarrassing Ryan day, and then this little gem, this little hidden gem and Duval county on Sunday. What an Easter egg for me. On Thanksgiving weekend. It's just awesome. This is great. I wish I had a big hat like Brian Robbins. That could be mine too. Oh, the world's my oyster. Ryan Shazier Believes a Positive Mindset Is the Key to Success
"Just want you all picture this. You're one of the top athletes in the world, playing for one of the most storied franchises in the world. And in one second, you are now a couple of weeks later going your 80% chance you're not going to walk clotting, throwing up, hitting your head, I mean, imagine what that does to your mindset, yet brother. You end up coming back and walking across the stage, not that long after this, to announce the draft pick for the freaking steelers. Take me from the moments when you were your lowest then to walking again. First you were using a walker or the crutches thing all the way up to walking up for the draft pick, but what was it? Was it your mindset? I think a lot of times people watch pro athletes say, all right, and even I do this, and a lot of them would become friends of mine. I'm like, well, he's physically just gifted. Not everybody is 6 three two 40 and runs a four 5 40, right? So they got a lot of blessing. But I think what is discounted is mental toughness. Is overcome an adversity, right? How did you get from there, throwing up, hitting your head, clots, you're not going to walk 80% to now in your life, you're got an agency, you've got other businesses. You've got all this stuff. What was the mental process like for you during those really hard weeks? So I love how you said that. So I like to use two people and these two people are good friends and moss. And then obviously everybody gonna say this about that, but they're not the most athletic guys. They're not the most gifted guys, but they're the two best in the world right now. Okay. Right. And Aaron Donald and TJ watt. So both of them are tremendously blessed. I'm not going to lie. They're both tremendously blessed. But air is not the strongest guy. He's not the fastest guy. He's not the biggest guy. You know what I'm saying? Definitely not the tallest guy. He's definitely got a tallest guy. But he out wheels everybody. Literally out wheels everybody. And then TJ is the same way. If you really look at TJ and his brother, his brother is the one that's the really big one. The bigger one. Of two super physically gifted dudes, but he's the mut of the two of them for sure. Right, right. And you know, TJ, he's super athletic, but he, you know, he had two ACL tears when he was in college, you know, and he just literally just out hustles everybody. And so like when I think of about me and how I made it to the NFL is just like literally my whole life, people told me I couldn't do something. So it was just like, my whole life, I was like, I don't care what you say, I'm going to do this. Like, I'm going to do this. And then I'm really positive with everything I do. I tell people all the time, I don't know anybody that's successful. And then believe in themselves.

How are you TJ? I'm doing really well. Thank you for having me on. Thanks for coming on right now. How is everything with this team right now? It seems like you are on a nice stretch. Certainly compared to the beginning of the season, would you agree with that assessment, TJ wad? Yeah, I would. And I think these last few games, especially getting into the biweek at an even 500 was kind of our goal once we started out at 1.3 and then obviously being able to get a win in the division was huge this past week and we just want to continue to take it one week at a time and stack these wins. How would you categorize your role with this team? I know what I would call it, but I'm on the outside. I wonder what you would say on that front? As an outside linebacker in a three four defense for the Pittsburgh Steelers, you have to be a playmaker. And I think that's something that I take on what's great pride and trying to bring as much splash we like to call it, whether it's in tackles for Los getting Sachs, punching the ball out, tip and passes up in the air interceptions. Anything like that, I'm trying to be a tone setter for our defense..

"I mean you can force a fumble but not recover it for instance and thus it's not a takeaway right so if things even out over time you still have to have the good core defensive principles but i think you make a really good point gary that if you're a defense that's going through a transition like the cowboys are i mean. They had a historically bad defense last year. They've been a lot better so far under dan. Quinn but it always takes a while to get used to a new scheme and get really comfortable in ed's oftentimes taking the ball away can kind of bolster you as you go through that transition period it do. They have multiple takeaways in all six of their games so far that season they had. They had a total of six games with multiple takeaways last year. And they didn't get their first one until november first. So it's just it's a new day here for the cowboys. Dak prescott is back And yeah this is. You gotta be feeling good if you're down in dallas right now yeah one of the things that came up when we reported the t. J. watt story last year that was kind of cheesy but in an endearing way and that has always stuck with me is that mike tomlin likes to refer to the ball as his team's hopes and dreams and it basically reinforces to your players. How important the ball is so if you are carrying the ball you have the hopes and dreams in your your arm and your grasp. You can't let them go and if you're on defense you're trying very hard to get the hopes and dreams back and certainly that situation with at the end of the game. I mean the steelers had their backs up against the wall. They're worried the season is slipping away on their way to a tie with the seahawks without russell wilson and tj. Watts disabled to snatch the hopes and dreams back for his team. So i think it's pretty apt analogy..

"And that is such a remarkable stat. Gary because even now the single season record for interceptions has held up since nineteen fifty two when dick night train lane. Had fourteen. Interceptions xavien howard. We saw had an excellent year last year with ten before that no one had even had ten in a season since two thousand seven so that really highlights just how exceptional what digs has been able to do this season as far as taking away. The football boy i that fourteen interceptions for a night train lane. I thought that was one that would never be broken. That's just one of those. That's in across eras record where it's almost like you. You almost wouldn't asterisk on it because it's like well game was played different back then. So of course. No one's ever gonna threaten this record but we will see with digs one thing. That is really interesting and we're just talking about counting stats at this point which are fun. One thing that's really interesting with digs is like you saw the patriots. After the pick six on sunday to give the cowboys the lead in the final minutes there they went right back after digs because they know how aggressive he is and they know that maybe he susceptible to a double move coming off that pick six so i mean he might have enough opportunities to end up making a run at fourteen. When it's all said and done your those still he'd have to get what seven more and eleven games here which is still an incredible rate. Yeah i mean he's been obviously averaging at least one per game so far. But i think you make a really good point gary in that taking the ball away is so important in today's game because it's become harder than ever but it still only one of playing cornerback and plays like that double move against the patriots where you could tell. He was fuming on the sideline. And maybe the safety should have also played that a little bit differently but after the game digs to his credit. Put it all on himself. He said he needed to play it. The right way and be in the right position but you know is some of that aggressiveness. Tamped down a little bit. You know did a play like that sort of force them to do that or is that going to be something that helped talk about with this coaches. I mean the best all around season. I've seen from a cornerback. Was durell regis in two thousand and nine with the jets and i have only been covering the nfl since about two thousand seven. So i know there are a lot of these before then but what rivas did that season was remarkable and taking the assignment of basically one on one man coverage with the opponents top receiver with no help over the top and a lot of situations and just blanketing them and he only had six interceptions that season because his coverage was so good..

"We'll just make a mistake. A quarterback Fires high and wide on a throw or misreads. A defense or or maybe. Just a fumbled snap that sort of leads to chaos. You know pass rushes can can do a lot to to cause takeaways in in the nfl right now but when you're talking about what it's just so unique because he's one of the few guys who he literally takes the ball away he is. He is elevated this thing to to almost the science and art the ability to force these fumbles. Yeah and a really great point you made. When we did the story last year that stuck in my mind is just how impactful a strip sack is or any kind of forced fumble. Because you're getting the ball where it happens versus an interception. Oftentimes the quarterback is throwing it down field so there is a little bit of a flip in field position but when you force the ball out you get it right there and it can really set up score or obviously in the case of the steelers game it was the game clinching play but a lot of times. It happens in the in the flow of a game. Defenses trying to get an edge. You put your offense in a really great position to score for what this skill of his really started taking off as did his career in his second season. And that's when mike tomlin had him switched sides so he and bud duprey who is in his teammates. Swaps watt headlined. Up mostly on the right side are almost exclusively on the right side as a rookie. But they thought he would be a mismatch against the league's right tackles and the part of that was that he could see. The quarterbacks is better because of the way that quarterbacks drop when they're right handers and he could bat passes down and he could see the football. "Get news that a deal has been agreed to in principle. Not sign but agreed to between. T. j. watt and the pittsburgh steelers. This was first broken by ian rapoport of the nfl network was also adam schefter. Espn that they have the deal in principle. I think they just have to put pen to paper. But it's agreed moving forward. Here's the deal. It's a four year extension worth just over our right around just over one hundred and twelve million dollars for tj. What would this has him as the highest paid defensive player in football now you can manipulate the numbers one way or the other to say how much it is per year. We'll get there all right. It's basically he's just over twenty eight million dollars per year from that extension and there's also eighty million dollars fully guaranteed at signing. He had to win over his teammates and earned their respect veteran tight end. John smith saying he's earned it. We're ready to ride with him. Fellow tight end hunter. Henry said he's becoming a leader as he grasps the offense and when you think about john who smith and hunter henry that's fifty five million dollars guaranteed to them in free agency. The patriots guaranteed one hundred sixty three million overall in free agency a reminder that they were all in to build this team and they feel like they built a better one entering the regular season open yet megawatt at times people think. Oh you spend all this. Money does a really pan out. Actually history tells you that it does key lots of pieces around mack jones to help him certainly but how good you think. This team realistically can be probably good. It'd be really good. Lord i look back at the two thousand one two thousand two super bowl. Champion new england patriots. They started off at one in three in eight. Have offensively nearly talent. That's on this offense for bill bell. Check in the new england patriots. I'm going to support the rooney family and the steelers. Tj watts not going to be able to be. You can't bankrupt the team. Then there's the players say dj. Y you gotta you gotta get what you can why you can. Both parties are going to do what they feel is best for their specific entity. "That second half that consistent pressure every single game where he doesn't go multiple games with very limited production because I think this deep is although the production in the spurts is great.
