"We only have about a month left before it starts august ninth through fourteenth at the nba. Summer league in las vegas okay. Well that's a good summary of where we are here. And i think it makes sense. We're focused more on signings than trades but if there are specific trade rumors that are out there that we think are a guy is very likely to get move. We try to address those so before we even get into our mock draft which is spoiler alert is just gonna be what. Espn's mock draft. Says is going to happen. ben simmons As ben simmons agent rich paul. We had a conversation with daryl morey in which both of us assured the other that we want him to finish his career in philadelphia. But i don't think anyone believes that. So what's out there. For ben simmons. Philly will leave it to us. Since you're trying to also get better in this trade to open up a offers for benjamin's. I'm sure those will be received so we would actually like to start with the indiana pacers. How are you feeling about some. We were thinking something involving malcolm. Brogdon and tj warns that. Would you be interested in a framework like that. I mean we're the pacers we don't make moves like this. We really considered. Do you want to consider it while. I talked to some other teams. Yeah i suppose so. Charlotte you there or not. You guys have cap space. I don't know how you're feeling about that. So we actually could be more flexible in terms of a deal but we were. We were thinking about something. That has gordon hayward or terrazas a part of it and potentially tj washington and or a lottery protected future. I as well is are. Are you interested in ben simmons. I think he'd be amazing. Fit with what you're building. I'm not so sure about as fit with lamelo ball both of them seemingly to be guys with the ball in their hands a lot But seems like a fairly low price and we'd be interested something with Rosier pta washington advert. We'd like gordon hayward apparently yeah we'd be open to it that could make some sense for us But you know. I think it'd make more sense to to trade rosiere. It'd make that's for you. But we like we like gordon hayward and we would see somebody who we think could be a part of our closing five whereas terry rozier east could. I mean he's become east grown into a really good player but we have to figure out an extension with him it gets. It gets really complicated so we just wanted to get your temperature. We're gonna be talking to a lot of teams. Yeah i say it's unlikely for hayward because we value highly and made him a centerpiece of what we're doing but something based on rosa and pj washington. We'd be very interested. Sacramento harrisburg haliburton. No we're not willing to discuss tires. Halliburton ooh at all. I mean you know. Maybe if you're willing to talk about joel embiid. Wow not even like if we if it was barnes and albert and we sent like tyrus maxi back or somebody like that. I don't know maybe they're maybe. There's university of washington alumni on our roster. We already got the best of the two thousand twenty. Nba draft gut. Wow i mean even even if philly through in like some some future graphics or something nothing tires. Halliburton wizard untouchable wizards. How you feel about bradley. Beal you want to become the next thunder. You can get ben simmons. He's a guy who can't shoot you become the next under right now. We already have our athletic guy who can't thank you. Okay wow lot. Lot of hangups. So far unwarlike pelicans. I don't have the full framework here. But how are you feeling about brandon ingram. Would you think about a simmons. Zion williamson foundation instead. I we're not sure about the fit there. So i i think we're gonna pass. Okay yes you guys have an ungodly amount of cap space. We could create a huge trade exception. We were thinking emmanuel quickly. A first round pick and then you guys you know if we can figure things out from there but basically. You're not giving us much in that deal. We're creating huge trade exception embedding that we can find somebody else so quickly and a first round. Pick like one of our first rounders this year. They're about the same so i yeah we do that. Sure okay. we'll think about it. That's that's a potential foundation as well. That doesn't get us to every where we're going but we might have to have some conversations clippers you run or are you not interested. We're very interested Although we value paul george way. More than ben simmons. Okay but if you could give more that might make sense for us. How much more. It's tough because we're both with now teams. It's tough to see what you could send us. That would actually help us. That you would be willing to give up theoretically. I'm i'm just spitballing here. Something built around. Marcus morris patrick beverley terrence mann while getting all three of those guys would add depth store rotation morris. Morris has has a history in our in our wonderful city. Would that would that be something that you'd be interested. That'd be very different. Clippers team yeah. It'd be very addressed. Just working through ideas lakers. Did we found to giddy. Scare you off a little bit. Yes lakers. I been the only structure that i can think of is casey p kuzma and some pick. But you don't have a lot of pixel up. So i'm guessing you'd be on board with that. Yeah okay sure. That ben simmons is value as just. I'm asking me okay. So i've adeel okay so the either there two more that i want to work through so one of them portland. I know you've got josh richardson. How're you feeling about. Cj we are willing to do a cj mccollum for ben simmons trade but we are not willing to include any of our draft picks in that trade. What about simon's we would be willing to do. Silence okay it's good to find that the an mccollum. Yes if it's out of the phone. Victor kids value is and then Nate i'm gonna give you the spurs for a hot second. How do you feel you guys have a bunch. Space like the knicks. Do something involving white and benjamin. Yeah i think we would have very seriously. I consider that type of package Maybe a chip angolan can take on his greatest project yet. Okay so i've reached out to. I've reached out to a bunch of teams Is there any team. That i have not yet reached out to. That has an interest in ben simmons and has something credible to offer You've the wolves don't you day. I do So made you wanna take them. I i could i. I didn't include them as a team to toss. Because the most logical structure would be involving the ngelo russell and his connection to karl anthony. Towns apparently significant. Yeah ben simmons closer connection to winning than deangelis russell's also apparently significant so that we'd certainly would be willing to put the ngelo russell a on the table with the focus on that particularly because we're gonna be reorienting our perimeter offense around anthony edwards in the coming seasons. Would you also put maliki beasley in the deal. I'm anthony edwards is going to be off. Yes something else would have to be coming back from you guys. I think at that point we their ways to do that. That's not a problem. Also so which of these constructions are like what. We focused in for philly. Unlike maybe the three most favorable a of these type of deals era that that are going to move the needle for next year. So i think it's portland. Cj vitamins is is a credible. That's cj can help the team ways an imperfect fit but a talented fit the knicks that would involve tying in basically the my idea there is creating trade exception. That could then be used. In a kyle lowry or other point guard signed and trade and then see third one Cut none of the other ones are particularly good charlotte..

"In the home buying process of alone that fits your life Rocket can have the opening day for the MBA postseason already seen some games become final. The Toronto Raptors defeated the Brooklyn Nets earlier today. And you also had a fun high scoring game in our lands up between the Denver Nuggets and the Utah Jazz. Donna Mitchell, 57 points You would think that's enough and wrong. Does the Coolio Kitchen. Jamal Murray came up big late, and Murray was really sensational in that fourth quarter ends in overtime is the Nuggets Go up one zip. You also have the Celtics going up against the Toronto wrapped You have the Celtics going up against the Philadelphia 70 Sixers game in the final minute right now, Celtics up by three, but we'll get back to the N B. A and what's going on the bubble in just a moment as we welcome in The current head coach of the Charlotte Hornets. James Borrego, kind enough to give us a few minutes right now on CBS Sports Radio coach Zach help here in our New York City studios appreciate the time that you've been Appreciate it. Thank you. Thanks for having me. I'm doing well, Families do well, we got basketball ball back on. We got playoffs going so We got school about to start so Ah, a lot. Ah, lot going now after being, you know. On hiatus for a couple of months. It feels like We're getting some sort of normalcy with sports in school starting again, so It's been a strange time, but it's good to be back. Have you handled this ever since March because there were times where maybe you thought you were going to be a part of the restart. Then you aren't going to be a part of the restart And you all said, handle family as well. Had you manage these last few months. That was a great challenge. Obviously, never been in this type of situation before. Obviously, we're extremely disappointed at the season, you know, came to a halt. We're playing extremely well. We've just come off a win at Miami. Young guys were playing well playing hard. Um, you know, and not knowing what to expect over the next few months in the next few days, Really. We just stayed in touch with are guys way wanted to stay connected as a group as a unit. We did that by, you know, through the zoom calls watching some different playoff. Siri's making sure that our guys were continue to think about the game and process the game. So Um, we made sure that we stayed in touch with our group. Because we were still in season. We didn't know we were going to continue. We didn't know if there was gonna be Ah, you know a few more games or more games for us. To come. So we just try to keep our guys locked in engaged, obviously, making sure they were taking care of themselves Number one. Then, when my staff I really dug into our team, our identity who we were what we did Well what we need to do better, so I did a lot of self reflection team reflection. Got to watch a lot of free agents players during that time, so my staff kept me engage. I try to keep them engaged and really try to stay connected. With my players and then ultimately making sure my family was, you know, managing and balancing all that was a great challenge, but I think we came out of it stronger, obviously got we still got a ways to go here. But, you know, I had a lot of good family time and I enjoyed my kids of a young group, you know? Ah, rising freshman. Ah, rising sixth grader, fourth grader. So we had some good family time did a lot of cooking. I can tell you that I did a lot of cooking and cleaning. Are you a good chef? I do. Okay? I got better. Better. I was the best meal of the beret. Go household. Well, I went strong, you know? I mix it up, you know, from New Mexico, So I like my Southwest cuisine. My my new Mexican food so lot of green chilli chicken enchiladas. At some brisket going. I used the crock pot of ton. You know, it's hard, Tio. Hard to screw up a meal in the crock pot. I guess you could do it. But a lot of you know, brisket in there did some pasta, some different dishes, so We had a lot of fun. It's fun to cook with your family. We were inside. So we experimented. Did some baking. Um, but you know, it was just a good time Spend with my family. James Ray, go here with us, the head coach of the Charlotte Hornets, You said you did some reflection and you wanted to see how you could improve. What were the things that you noticed during the last few months where you've got some time to reflect on yourself that you said I could do this better or that better, and I know all coaches. They think they could do everything better. But what were the main key points of emphasis. Yeah, I think you know. You look at our roster. I think you know, we're very young group. And as I went from year 12 year to this year, I really tried to really focus on identity who we wanted to be what we wanted to look like. And, you know, I think there's some areas Especially defensively that that we improved in and we still have to get better, really emphasizing the board being being a more active defense, more active defense on the board. Limiting the paint is really where I'm challenging myself on the defensive. And how do we take away the pain? We're not the biggest team, the longest team. How do we really work in that area? On what really what our practice habits and I think we did a really good job this year from your 12 year too. Is really emphasizing our practice habits not trying to accomplish 56 10 things in a practice really focusing on one or two things, and I think that pay dividends for us the second half of the year. No. The last month of the season way held our opponents the lowest points per game. Defensively, We're getting out. Getting some good teams had a Goodwin at Toronto. Good homeland against Houston. Obviously the win in Miami Played Denver down the stretch. We help Milwaukee to below 100 points, the first team to do that in over a year. So really spend some time looking at what got us to that point where the habits that allowed us to focus with the young group and get that done the last month of the season. They're really studying our player development program. It's the It's the lifeblood of our organization. And I think you hear a lot of coaches talk about this. It has to be for us, a small market group. We have to do this through internal development, internal growth, and I think we did that is eyes that reflect I was really able to study a lot of our players. It really track their growth. And you know when you look at that I think we did a pretty good job. I'm proud of our group. You look at Devante had a heck of a year. Look at our young group in TJ Washington, you know, going to be first team or second team all rookie Miles. Bridges took a step of the Martin twin, The Thinker, Our culture fits for us..

He always he always brings some new and I. Know He kinda joined the plastic thing so. Roy I know when somebody told me? That, when he did that one I guess when he talked about the wall near the Hammer, supposedly, he had gotten in trouble or something, because he said too much too many things that he should have said on. One of my comedian homeys had told me that, and that's why he had lost supposedly against. Supposedly, that's why he lost his TV show that he had on TV land because he got to political offended too many people that were involved in politics. They got his ass out from what I heard whether it's true or not I don't know, but I watched this one. I thought it was pretty funny, but I'll tell you one. One stand up it kind of history slash comedy John. Wick was on order enough. You know who that is. Yeah, okay, he did. Something I. Think is called all history for dummies or something like that whatever you get a chance to look it up because he actually talks about Latino history of and it's actually pretty good. "That's it she had a Toyota dealers U. K. game show news radio eight forty double eight yes welcome man ladies and gentleman boys and girls they won it's your one pretty yeah I got a funny feeling this post game show may even feel like a loss the Kentucky beats Utah valley there ain't no state eighty two seventy four they won by eight but it sure was a lot closer than that is what no eight point game people are gonna say all wow Kentucky barely one by eight sure glad I did watch it it was a one two three point game in the final three or four minutes it was it was a one point game was it seventy what what you don't mace is due to get the three point play to make it what seventy four seventy my goodness you call valley coming in the Kentucky and for the second straight game we take in and undermanned team that can take you should be run and Adam Rupp arena run up off the floor over we can tell you his superior talent and somehow the game goes down the final minutes for the second straight game only this time unlike the Evansville game at least this time Kentucky made the plays to win it because Utah valley had bubble Parham on the other side in T. J. Washington knocking down threes from the upper arena to keep Utah valley in it is it the this is usually the formula where a team's stays in a game get Kentucky you get some guy that just goes unconscious and talks thrown in threes from everywhere and tonight was TJ Washington this is this is I usually somebody stays in the game unlike Evansville the other night they just I don't even know how that happened but tonight once again Kentucky gets exposed on defense on ball defense she don't spell it up Bobbi Washington is a legend in Lexington he will former Brian station basketball coach but he played a key K. you played in the NBA may was the a BA you people around election to know Bobby Washington and he gave the greatest quote ever one time to us when I worked at channel eighteen I asked him about his bride station defenders one night he just said spank spank stock that's Kentucky defense right now all ball D. fits spank spank stock they can't guard anybody after we bragged autumn and bragged autumn and bragged on him about the Michigan state game how good defense they played my goodness shut down caches which didn't have good they played it depends on the perimeter that's how they beat Michigan state was all they you know they had Tyrese maxi played great off it's a game but boy it's what they do on the defensive end to beat number one Michigan state and then the EKG you game yeah you want about forty two points but it was what you did on the defensive in each case you didn't even score till seven minutes into the game but these last two games the defense has stink steak sauce talk all ball defense is what is so bad now I know you're down to seven scholarship players and your best perimeter defender Aston Hagens got a bad we'll he's plan on it's so you got six and a half reaction Hagen was your best player out there tonight everything went through ashen Hagens tonight everything your office with through him your defense with through him everything so what six and a half players pretty good performance by him we end up with twenty four twenty six twenty six point could hit twelve free throws twelve twelve the free throw line good thing he hit the free throws or by god this may have been another losing post game show to up crappy team in Utah valley but they won Nick Richards dominates as he should have against a team that had no way to match up with the double double for him his second double double this season after he stuck it up against Evansville last time out still waiting for his mother guide to kind of step up I still think this team is going to be good man I mean I know but it's that kind of sounds crazy but I really think this team is going to be a good basketball team they've got that they don't have the interior post got they don't have the read Travis or the PJ wash the guy that you can post up though it down there and you know you're gonna get a bucket fell that they don't have that got but I think they're going to be really good I I said well let let me I let me slow down a minute if they can find their shot they can't they're they're not shoot making issue right now twenty one percent from three point land in their first couple games here twenty one percent action Hagen still had hit a three point lead over nine for the season I think Max is like five for fourteen Johnny Jews saying our three point specialist is like one of five it's still not there she's not there all ball deep it's not there can they get there I still think again I believe they go to win a Tony games a lot of games how about a pump the brakes on them made a final four team probably absolutely but I still think the really gonna be really good when a lot of games that should be blown these teams out yes they look bad right now yes they got a lot of work it's got to be done yes that's why you play these games in November to try to get better manner this you know is as young as they are so it's frustrating man I'm frustrated everybody else and we're gonna have to get a lot of calls tonight numbers will be frustrated and they should be rightfully so I would like to repeat what Tom heart set on the broadcast tonight but I think I might get in trouble and my boss is here tonight team instead he would like me saying what tell Tom Hart said tonight during the broadcast I don't think he realized what he said during the broadcast tonight about what you talk about it was trying to do to Kentucky tonight so for those who are watching on TV you know you know what I'm talking about you know what time hard said tonight about what you tell about he was trying to do to get Ducky what is that deleted out there will need to re hash that it was funny but we'll leave it there alright we'll take our first break and we'll come back phone lines are already lit up like is it may end up as it may sound like a losing postgame show tonight but they kind of his arm they stuck it up again but they won eighty two seventy four I don't think there will be a point in our pre game show drew and I did they they're gonna get eighty they barely did Jack pilgrim I think exactly predicted eighty two points thirty one free throws thirty one of thirty four free throws while and one of twelve from three point line but I go we need to be games when you're one of twelve from three point land but yet the free does it is what they want we hated going twelve of twelve and TJ Washington the.

"Not book buckets thirty eight thousand just a box out and got them play again some early this series wasn't points but I while the rankings are all great players so a lot of players are over rated he was a five star dollars guy but it really wasn't that good he was that guy wasn't enough I respect your you know I always respected that even though it always agree that in my definition of a good coach as a coach that can win in different conferences at the D. one level I don't believe Marvin Menzies could do that can you win in the wack absolutely if he takes over the Grand Canyon program after the great job Dan Marley is has done I have no doubt he can win there can be one of them out west conference can you win and at at a big program absolutely not because I don't think he's a good exes and ohs coach to be a really good coach and I know you did say really good he said good but to be a good coach and this is my personal then I'll get your thoughts on this not only do you have to recruit Hey you just talked about what time Simon you have to come up with a game plan in your staff couple and execute that get these kids to buy into it I just don't think Marvin Menzies that guy I don't think he's a defensive minded coach but anyway let's get off Marvin Menzies for second where do you think you want to be pregnant be at right now all the respective TJ also burger I like the guy I think he's done a good job reaching out to the community where you think the little the program would be out right now if Todd Simon was the head coach to this point they've been NC double a tournament thing really think so yeah but I don't doubt that I don't doubt that I agree with you thank you and views in the final four in Harry Giles is top schools he would have gotten a one size I was over come on maybe a phone for so coach this is your city what do you think of what has happened to the one of the program since long Kruger left you've been in this town for a while now what do you make of the one of the program I think it is a great program that can be with everybody wants it to be I think it's a school they can have deep incidentally Turner ends in pool in these high profile recruits they just haven't been able to make it work and that's the process you know it's tough finding coach is good coach is the right coach is the right staff the right add me and everything I guess the whole blamed you get allow you coast Aston flexibility with some things to you know guys need resources gas anything so they can go out and get in do what they need to do you know a guy like Mike Miller he has resources you know bringing in some I like that he's okay guy he doesn't he doesn't have any coach versus for anything now listen I would I'm pulling for TJ also burger I really am he's been great to us he's been great to the shell with that said I thought Miller would've been the perfect guy for this job first of all I think you would a product top five recruiting class in your number one yeah and I know that Amari hardy and I heard it leads to other players went into France was office and said we want Mike Miller now France while on a different path and again all due respect also burger were were behind him I thought Miller was the right guy for the job what do you say to that so we are known the NBA is a way of players league players get what they want in the league is good because players get and that's more and more obvious shift which is to place the right so you get to listen to your players they only play hard may you have the things they need let there be a say you don't just give them everything but you know you listen to your players I think things will be a lot different right now if my mother was a you food for sure have a top ten recruiting class I don't know TJ at all I'm here is a great guy he's a really great codes so I hope he does well you know I've never met him but I think Mike was the obvious choice we agree do you think that you know we should have considerate but you know of course is Rick Pitino you know if you don't look past Rick Pitino I don't care what she's been through I talked to a lot of people and by the way since you brought up that name I did for a reason I do want to make an announcement since we're talking little hoops that Rick Pitino will be joining us on Thursday so I'm gonna ask Rick Pitino if anyone from you in LV contacted him I talked to a lot of people that say they don't believe Rick Pitino ever coach college basketball again an unlikely that he even coaches in the NBA again I don't know if that's true or not there's a lot of bags are I think he deserves a shot at it but anyway going back to you and all the work if you're just joining us by the way we're talking with family prep head coach Rodney had X. what is your relationship with coach race here and and the bishop Gorman program I you on friendly terms of that is that is obviously I mean look you wanna make the final four you want a national champion I get all that that is the game you mark on your calendar right when you play bishop Gorman that is a fun fun atmosphere it's great I've been to a few of those games and a lot of fun what's your relationship with him in the program over there man let me tell you this what makes this thing so far is the fact the grant rice is an amazing human being this may stand up guy like actor calling right now he dances Hey Ronnie has grown in you know whatever I need you know he'll make sure that I can I can get them me fantastic dude I I you know I see why he's won as many championships over there I mean obviously lets you look at the whole landscape but he's a good person he's a good guy man and he you know he deserves everything he's gotten over there so you know set out to grant I'm glad to hear that by the way and that's always a fun game every year we always look for to market our calendars as basketball fans what you do is very different you know when you when you when you hear of all he's a varsity high school basketball coach of thinking okay maybe making five or six thousand dollars and you know he does goes to practice every day and what's the big deal you got some games on your schedule and but we're talking family prop it is a whole different ballgame it is a full time job is it not it is it is it's not just us of the practice like I'm breaking down feel moments stats like most of you seem to be a guest on semi normal varsity high school coach does not do that very much he's probably teaching you know home actors exactly that's what I'm saying my high school bus will go to actually taught history yes the Sierra to do this in a breeze my question coaches that look we think of Vegas we think of it is at the center really of a U. basketball as anybody all the tournaments are here Brian I don't play by play for a number of tournaments Mitchell young players silence RJ Bering's I believe that we did their game he did years ago we broadcast of their high school I think we we are both east coast guys of course Jeez Midwest guy so I think I think of you know basketball powers like kill academy of course Virginia I think of a place like New Jersey culturally what he's done up there of course all of all prep schools along the east coast but are we looking at family prep as being that west coast version of that coach is that something we can that we can see going forward obviously there's been great players at your program already but is it is it safe to say that your program is something like that on the west coast I'd say it's probably better than than others I mean we've you know outside of my very we get more national championships than anybody name some of the amazing players that even as an assistant that you've been a coach and you know some recognizable names I know there's a lot of them but give me like five or six that people say wow wow you work but that cater to you know give me a few name a few Kelly braver savana and wow mmhm okay let's stop there and I will continue for Chavannes what do you make a cake is you coach them in high schools in the system he's gonna be a contract with the Milwaukee Bucks he struggled a little bit and like we all know how great of a player it was only twenty two years old right still very young do you think do you think that he will ever be a starter in the NBA yes why he said he can shoot the lights out in S. them BA is nowadays you have the option I was just in the gym with a sad two days ago add seem like barely misses at what's the situation now is far away with the rockets right now they just have a does he have a contract with them again to conserve I don't think so right now I thank you get in a bad situation normalizing for him the win for him the blended players the head coach there I mean you get a ex NBA guy who used to party and do things that's a that's a coach is not good for eighteen year old kid if he needs he needs a good situation stable situation good head coach because like you said he's twenty two years old I didn't think you LV got as much out of him as they could have and again I'm not her not that too but not to knock on Dave rice because again I think Dave rice is a great guy and a good dude he wanted to win more than anybody here great assistant coach Mike got great recruiter I just didn't think you got enough of those guys you know Christian what is another one Anthony Bennett's I could name you so many great players Bryce Dijon Jones the late brace to John Jones so many players the Dave rice coach and I say to myself khem birch another one a solidified NBA player Jones junior I mean look the list goes on and on I purchased a five star yeah and I just didn't think they look we're we're shot is an incredible talent I think you'll be an NBA player for a long time you know more than me I hope he is a starter one day but I just felt at the college level they could have gotten more at him and I don't think it was his fault some I would agree to pry you pry could get a whole lot more out of a sign and Leslie was was he got banged up yeah his name was her when he was a high school doesn't he tried to play through it so he he's just now getting to a point where his knees okay Gaza I mean I don't know if you remember our son high school way he was like so let it yeah lights out in in that's bothered him so but they could get some more out of but I think a lot of that was just the fact that he was playing with the bony I think you know the guys at at a two and a guy with personality and that's Kelly right now Kelly records you know you had minutes with the with the watch and wizards and ends up getting traded but he's another guy right he's got a ton of upside is NBA player yeah I mean he's at these big time is birds of good three in detail yeah I mean he can guard every position on the floor you know it's except the five probably but he can score the bass was a show in Phoenix did a really before he heard is was asked on his wrist for he heard himself he was playing really well and you know he's a for contract now what are some of the the give me a few other guys that over the years that you've been in the luxury coach Vann Tristen Clark down at Baylor wow mark is Harry over market say beset is currently with the clippers bobo TJ Washington Tyler Edwards while somos Dillon Brooks Jonah Bolden Derek Thorton Justin Jackson at the the list just goes on and on and on when you see a seventeen year old kid do you say to yourself of the first few times you watch please say okay I know right now a hundred percent this kid is going to be a D. one college basketball player do you know right away or does it take you a little bit of time now you know right away because just the athleticism alone make would be one because basketball player I mean that in a lot of other things going to be you can tell when a key walks on court your division one is there really good player that you've coached in it that you said yourself man kids should it should I got more out of out of his college experience and again I'm not I'm not saying it in a bad way to trash somebody but you save yourself man if that kid had maybe a different mindset he could have been blah blah blah you know could have been sky's the limit I mean it is there a particular player.

He's shown why was a second team all SCC and the SEC freshman of the year great atmosphere here in the second half of Kansas City. Harper inside half court retreats toward the strike now crossover three pointer launch shot. No good. Never caught rim and the rebound down taking off the floor by PJ, Washington, Kentucky, Dow with a chance to retake the lead quickly will stop at half court after John Calipari told him back it out. They want to go to PJ Washington. And now we're going to get a foul. Call try to throw the past Tyler hero was trying to come through the lane and throw to the near side. But he is held on the play that bell is on Horace Spencer, and that will be number four on the Auburn. Big man this one another underneath out of bounds. And this has been death for Auburn. They better do a better job on this underneath out Calvin Johnson, by the way, five straight points for the Wildcats. Auburn trying to decide if they can get a substitution. And they will bring cure foyer who's got three thousand Spencer will leave with Ford. In Auburn defend the pain. They do this time the past comes to the outside or read Travis and now into the hands of Tyler hero. Driving to the top kits through the Johnson. How quickly right side three pointers up. Harper driving trying to throw back behind nearly threw it away dead stolen by Johnson slide to the head to quickly alleyoop Washington cans at home as he kisses the ram and puts Kentucky up forty five forty four. And I mean, literally kissed the ramble Jared orchestra to settle dotty perked up at three and then kind of a careless turnover. Auburn's I in sixteen minutes. It's more aggressive with a one point lead Brown with the dribble on the outside. He's gonna work out. Hero driving towards the basket. Nice dish, but widely couldn't hit from in close got the basketball back and knocked over the last touching the hand of Austin widely. It'll go back to Kentucky. Auburn beds crying for a foul. They thought why we went up and lost the ball or whether it's squirted out of his hands. But he certainly didn't go up strong enough for where he was with the ball. This is some kind of atmosphere considering we still have almost thirteen minutes left to go. One point ballgame. Kentucky once led by eleven. Farside of the floor. Washington drives a little jump hook shot. No good rebound that he got his own. The put back won't go as he goes sprawling to the floor. He's fouled on the play at TJ Washington. Back to the lied purifies called for the owls. Macklemore thinks it was his foul. But that's pure voice for it is trying to get the foul on him. Trayvon is smart. But again, the house up on the page, but re Travis schizo assistant because he kept the ball alive and PJ Washington got his own miss back. But it was Travis. The kept it alive whose pearls imploring his big box out and rebound. Two easier said than done so PJ Washington at the free throw line is four for five today. Benzathine east fires and misses. One more dry coming. Rob will select the unexpected moment of the day sponsored by Exxon Mobil industrial plants capture CEO to think how we can help lower emissions. Exxon Mobil is working to make it happens. The unexpected energy of Exxon Mobil. Dunbar is gonna come back into the ballgame. Remember two bigs with four fouls. Dunbar's got three of his own about a small is Bruce Pearl can go pretty matrimony only guy you'd call a big in the game. He's on the floor with Harper j bottom small rice, Browder big. This is your right? That is a very small lineup very quick lineup. Also here we go. I don't think he didn't before. Yeah. Now today. Well, first of all you can't come out and come back in the game. And the officials are now going over to the scorer's table saying you can't make that substitution might have been some confusion on who the person was on. I think the officials are going to take. The opinion of one or the other. They're going to converse here about this or Courtney green is the stabbed by official. So if they made an illegal substitution of get it out, but the problem four kidnapped him back in they're gonna make me Dunbar stay on the floor the confusion started with who the personal foul was on. I don't see a change in the foul. They said it was on ROY. But he's showing his three thousand up on the board. Now, not Ford, which means they would have had you given the foul. Ben. To macklemore. There's all kinds of confusion. Nobody's moving. You're doing anything right now. But the officials are waving Kentucky's Ashton agents into the game and quickly will leave. Away still stable. Got to win came out of the game. He's got to wait for the clock to start the four come back here. I guess we'll find out when we find out. Washington. Second free throw coming Kentucky by one with twelve. Forty one left. Denise fires and hits. He's got eighteen to lead. All scores. Five straight points for the Wildcats now. Two-point ballgame before still cannot come in is on the floor was walking up can't commend fill. The clock starts. Pearl tried to get him into the game again. And again, they sent him back the other way. There's all kinds of confusing going on because they allowed to legal substitution. Came in before the clock started after he was replaced for the same thing. I'll briefly that suck the energy out of this building. But it'll be back again we can guarantee you that these teams keep going back and forth. Scoreboard is long in the building. It's forty six forty four Kentucky. Bryce brow thought about a three that they closed. They'll try three anyway. Traffic on the right side, couldn't shoot. The first one is his own teammate was in front of them. More took one dribble. It aside any forty seven forty six Auburn on tap. I appoint twelve oh, wait let go back and forth to SEC hose. Go. Farside? We'll take and got a whistle away from the ball and a foul Paul coming on Maliki Dunbar. That will be his fourth. Got ourselves a terrific ball game. But you got to wonder who's Pearl is going to have enough guys left while he's the ad. He's tried to me off the floor because you had two players try to with both hands trying to push each other out of the way to catch the ball. They call they elected to call it Dunbar. There was enough contact to call it either Blair a break in the action with an even twelve minutes left to play. It is Auburn forty seven Kentucky forty six. "Greatness, search indeed. The Iraqis and the Orioles remain in a rain delay at the start. But what's that game gets underway? We will get you to Yankee Stadium. But right now back to NCAA tournament basketball, the mid midwest regional championship all burn Kentucky Kentucky's leading Auburn seventeen seven a little bit more than eight minutes into this ball game. And they are getting good looks at the basket. Auburn is getting everything contested. What I love about Kentucky so far five different players have scored. Yeah. PJ Washington was the go-to guy second half of the year. But really the go-to guy for this team is the open, man. And that's what they're finding early zero fast-break points for Auburn so far in one of six from three. They trail by ten back to Scott Gramma, PJ Carlesimo, Kansas City. Jason Arbor's Mr. last three field goal attempts it as a team they are three thirteen one for six from three point range top by ten Rideout being Jay. And a lot of ways auburn's half court defense is getting the job done transitional builder struggling. Yeah. They're not as bad in the half court. The transition defense is very poor. Fred mentioned seven fast-break points. Eight two points indicate Kentucky. Really struggles to finish inside against Kentucky. Was that's not the straight to their. They're backwards got to step up its tough. Would you short? It's very good back court, but it's a very small backward. Height wise. Jared Harper Bryce crowd got to step up for the Tigers later. I will select the player of the game. Sponsored by Mercedes Benz vans built for you. The all new sprinter? Tuck front running right now. And if they are front running, you know that that's something they've done very well under John Calipari to sixty five in the John Calipari era when they've gotten a double digit lead in any game. That's the mountain that Auburn is trying to cry. Even though we barely played eight minutes in this ball game. Tigers in down the baseline doughty comes wide open. They forgot about them easy to as he jams. It hall to get Auburn back to within eight. They didn't communicate. He thought it was a switch quick all the way to the ramp. Ross afterward Higgins bounces for hero. Hyper quickly now hero, right corner. Comes up with the shot. No good at a one handed rebound stretching for Spencer for Robert. Harper. Now back to Harper hill to half court up didn't back in transition. Doughty cross-court pass dispenser. Now. Here's brown. Try to get going and between the legs of the dribble. Driving into the latest. Wait. Oh, good that he was fouled by Richards. That means at rice sprout a very good free throw shooter. Try to get off the side at the free throw line back to back. That I thought was going to be very difficult for them. They scored I dribble. Gowdy took advantage of the mix up on the defense. Just got an uncontested layup that type Brown dribbled in got filed and finish earlier and escape every time. They go inside stays in front of them. It makes him shoot over the top. And that has led to anything Travis was out. Now, he's coming back in that'll probably help shore up the inside of the Kentucky these grants Austin Wylie returns to the game as those Dan pure Floyd Brown hit on the first two second free throw on the way now, and it's good. Seventeen. In Kentucky on top of Auburn body. Eleven minutes left to go in the first app. Keeping franchise on the summit an awful lot. Jackie goes to work quickly down into the quarter to Hagen's the post Southall widely shoved in the back of read Travis that is one concern as well foul. Trouble for the big. It's the second on Wiley. Albert is it aggressive defensive team? They probably file boost Pearl would life for years aggressively. Great turnovers. You're gonna commit Belgian Johnson's gonna come back to the ball game for Kentucky. He'll replace manual quickly. And go big for big for Auburn is Horace Spencer comes back in Austin widely takes his seat. With the inbound side base live six point lead off that in Valerie, Travis and basketball and back to the top two Hagans. On the March madness logo behind the back dribble right into trouble and has to come out to MIR side for heroes Higgins. Higgins down low Washington. Fouled by Spencer, Washington initiated the contacts. Venture saying, wait a minute. I didn't move. Washington is that opened Scott underneath. That's the second time. They've been able to throw the ball. Jay watson. Carded about five feet away from the basket. I mean, he's too big too talented to get the ball deep. Wrecks two thousand Spencer. Spelled out in his career, including in the first meeting this year. First free throw is good PJ Washington. More toward him. It's five fifteen five. They do not want to get Kentucky. Shoot free throws. Washington dealt with that spring came back strong here on Friday rolls around the rim. And Kentucky's lead back to eight now at nineteen to eleven. Thirty-five counting left to go here in Kansas City. Teams dried at Virginia Texas Tech in the final four Spencer driving down. The lane tro tro in a great steal by Washington on the pass to the baseline. Down the floor. And that gives it to the man filling the lane Johnson is fouled on his way to the basket. There was a collision and contact and that quickly Spencer has three thousand for Auburn. Fallon how to ball games? And that is a big problem Al less than a quarter check that that's two on stretcher and two on Wiley, but the big voucher. His turn all the started. Careless fascinated nice dribble. Guy. He's not used to dribble penetration. Create dribble van. Tuck you defenders stayed home on the weak side that turnover led to more transition. Transition defense has been a major problem. Pearlstine Johnson hits the first breach roses seventy one percent shooter. Is no good off the backyard, but they get the tip. And the rebound. And now you've got to get a whistle traveling violation. How about that? John Calipari is telling the manual quickly and told them about ten tons of practice. Stop trying to create shoot the ball shoot. It. Off the turnover. Here comes Auburn and the three pointer up to top four Harper is no they continue to be ice cold from beyond the arc rebound knocks off the head to Travis over the end line. So the Tigers will keep it. More importantly, it's lose ice cold. Harper Ofra three Brown OSA too. As a team won for seven and four. From the floor. Still within nine right now. He's got a three foot up, right? Right baseline. No good bike for the rebound. Couple of hands and it lasts touch the head of back before going over the end line. So those back to Kentucky you've been I'm fifty five. Did a great job that time it came up with ward offense rebound. Blended squirted out of bounds. They came close on that where they're getting a little more aggressive. Second shots. They need to. Continues freely substituting he's got three of his players with two thousand already over a quarter of the way this law game. Ross af court quickly picked up by Bryce Brown. Johnson head of the circle. Alex hero for the cats. The top of the circle shot clock at Ted baseline another mayor tried to get to the top. And he gets it out to Washington left handed shot off the glass. Good move by the big mad and TJ Washington exit eleven forced to switch and hero recognized right away. He take washed it just too big for any of the guards discography. Got six points off the bench here. Now. It's brow. Go to work on Travis took him into the lane under a good. I may feel golfer Bryce Brown. Twenty two thirteen. Drivers otherwise. Quickly for Kentucky. That is his name. Folks. Washington. Farside for Johnson. Top downstream heroes basketball. Switch. Mismatch for Washington. He throws through farside quickly three shot. No, good rebound. Controlled by Johnson. Johnson hero left side three quarter. No, good rebound knocked about just go back. The other way Kentucky. Grab was ready to explode. His hero was wide open for that three quarters. He couldn't get it to sit who's pearly screaming for over the bathtub, but I'm not so sure it's their Kentucky is too so long. It's so tough to keep off the glass cage. They played in the regular season got eighteen offense rebounds. That's on top of shoot the ball. Really? Well, Auburn fan though, you know, you played a big wrong team here on Friday night escape aboard. Dominating the glass and Auburn did not let North Carolina do that. So what happens is we go. The rest of the way Auburn down by nine with the basketball. Harper around the screen on top feeds left corner threes, an airball falls into the lap of gelding Johnson for Wildcats. Forward. Quickly stutter-stepped kicks to the nearside Johnson three from the left wing. No good. I got a hand on the rebound. But it goes. Wow. You're chasing it as a last touched it. But the officials are going to get the ball to Auburn. We're going to do it. When we come back. We have got a break in the action with seven fifty three to go with the I apply. It is Kentucky twenty two Auburn thirteen. You're listening to the men's basketball tournament on the Westwood One. NCAA radio network. What does building.

"Lead me up to NC double A tournament action. A couple more games today. There are two teams already on the way to Minneapolis, Texas Tech and Virginia after wins yesterday. We're gonna talk about that a second. Michigan state takes on Duke in the second game today. The first game Auburn going against Kentucky as you heard Chuma. Okay. The tortoise shell not playing and that's gonna be quite a blow. So we will see how things go for those games. You could hear them right here at ESPN one thousand to talk more about the NC double A. Tournament's we go on over to NBC sports cargo Scott Phillips nice enough to join me, Scott. How are you today? I'm doing great. How are you? I'm okay. You know, Scott Perry years where you get to the elite eight and then the games on Saturday. Don't live up to it may be blowouts last night. Could not have been more exciting. I don't think than than those two games turned out. It was it was pretty thrilling the entire bulk games. Each one going all out of the end. You couldn't ask for much more. Yeah. Definitely there's a lot of high level shotmaking in both games. We didn't see -fensive slugfests. Maybe we saw on Friday night with committee, Sweet Sixteen games and separate genius. Produced matchup is going to be one of the more memorable tournament teams. We've seen in the last year. It seems like Purdue had two great games this week that overtime win over Tennessee. Now falling short last night. But Carson Edwards definitely embedding himself. American basketball psyche with the way that you performance events. TA cernan. Yeah. He was absolutely unbelievable. And it's interesting. I didn't know this wasn't even thinking about it during the course of the game. Or someone tweeted out earlier today that he had no assists last night. I don't know necessarily if that's a bad thing when you're scoring forty points. No. But he definitely needed some help. We saw how well Ryan quiet shot. The pollen that win over Tennessee in the Sweet Sixteen hitting those numerous big shot to alleviate some of what a Carson Edwards have to carry on the offensive end. And that's what the boiler makers did not have less. Nice. They didn't have that secondary scores step up, and we've had to do a lot of it himself and he could for most of the game. But you're going into number one seed like pretending you have to have a little bit more help over the course of forty five minutes. Then what Carson Edwards had? Okay. What is your thought about what happened at the end of the game? Because Ryan Klein goes line he he can make it a two possession game. He misses a free. Throw Purdue then fouls with five point nine left because her up three Virginia makes the first next one gets tapped all the way back to the back court Clark finds the Akita who hits the jumper to tie its many people say they don't like that follow your up three just play defense. What were your thoughts? When that happened last night. I liked it. When they followed up three and truthfully it worked out for them. And that's hydro miss deck. He free throw and you have to good free through our. I'm sorry. Three point shooters on Virginia. Kyle guy in hydro. We've seen so many times in the NCAA tournament including Carson Edwards fouling l'amante Turner, Tennessee on their final possession. How easy it is to give up a time three pointer to follow three point shooter net situation. So to follow up three I think is a nice play. But again, it ended up where I got in the back court you the shutout high game overtime. And there's going to be some people who second question, I guess that decision. Yeah. It was pretty amazing game all the way down and you had mentioned the Tennessee game. I didn't think anything would top that. And I think last night was one of his funny because last week everyone say man, this is the best game of the tournament. Now last night people are saying this Purdue Virginia it's the best game of the tournament. Kyle guy a guy who was not hitting his three pointers second half. I don't know we hit. Four or five and he was just unstoppable. It was. So great to see these guys step up when they need it to and especially after last year being the first one to lose a sixteen and then you come in. There was negative negatively. But a lot of people doubted them, despite the fact that they were a number one seed yesterday, I guess coach Bennett he made an extra two hundred and fifty forgetting to the elite eight an extra two fifty forgetting to the final four not bad cash to make. But it seemed like there's a little bit of a monkey off his back and the entire team. Now, they seem to be playing a little bit more at ease after winning several games. Yeah. You're absolutely right. Fred, I think the key is getting over the mental home for this Virginia team there, obviously shaky in that first matchup against Gardner Webb with nationwide talking about whether they might be no number one to go down to number sixteen seed, and again, they had some stretches were guys like Kyle guy when cold throughout the your tournament, but you know, to step up in a league game like that where a guy like Carson Edwards is making shots at a high level. You guys like try hydro guy making requires and stepping up that says offer Virginia and that should give him a huge boost heading into the final four. Now. They're always things that you see in game said in every sport, you say, well, you're never gonna see something like that. What was the last time? You saw a guy get attacked gopher region out of bounds knocking the ball out of a guy's hands. They did that in the Gonzaga Texas Tech game. I haven't seen that happen. I know it can happen. But I don't think I've seen that happen in a long time. No, some bizarre circumstances, particularly because they senior in Josh Perkins per-, Gonzaga who has played so many minutes before and to see that kind of slip up late in the game when they had a little bit of momentum. And they maybe had a sliver of a chance to get back in. It was just hardening because we saw again, a great back and forth between the red meters and BULLDOGS a lot of high level shop making between the teams down the stretch. And it just didn't end the way they've ever Ginny Purdue game ended because of that technical foul. Yeah. It was pretty unbelievable. It was only a two point game the technical makes it for they make their free throws. And. It's it's it's interesting because there were some teams earlier on in the tournament who are not making their free throws. And you see how important those free throws as you get down as it gets whittled down from thirty two to sixteen to eight and now down getting down to four you see how important those free throws are not just at the end of the game. But all game long, definitely Texas Tech. And part of the reason they're in the final four, they're not always the number one defense in the country. But to close out that game sixteen of nineteen from the free throw line having closes like tear covert that Mooney indeed morality that really shows how good this red raiders team is and what crispier does put together, and you know, when they get a habit similar to Virginia. They're tough to play from behind because of that defense murphreybourugh shooting got Phillips from NBC sports, Chicago, two more games today. You can hear them right here on ESPN one thousand Kentucky taking on Auburn. Now, Kentucky number two seed Auburn a five they've already pulled some upsets what are your thoughts on this one coming in today? For auburn. It's gonna come down to perimeter shooting. They've been the hottest shooting him in the sense tournament. We saw them put ninety seven points on the North Carolina team that loves to get up and down the floor and put up points. So that was kind of a mesmerizing second-half shooting display by the Tigers. But they're missing KiKi who's been there key player over this last month. They've won eleven straight games in large part because OT's versatility. And being a match up nightmare. We saw that against North Carolina. And that's going to be a huge part of what's Bisky against Kentucky. The Wildcats beaten Auburn twice this season. That's they're going to have a player that they need to keep healthy themselves and TJ Washington. But I liked the Wildcats in this one playing without you might be a little bit of a struggle for Auburn. They do have dandruff pure, you can space this war and do a couple of things that he does. But he's not nearly the defensive presence, and he can't put it on the floor nearly as well as a KiKi does. But Auburn could stay in this. If they continue to stay from three point range Jerry Harper and Christ Brown who the better tutors in the field. And it was surprise me. One bit of foreign made this one a lot closer than the game. We saw. Back in February Kentucky grew out Auburn, Scott. We we see how the game and how all games have changed. And now, they don't hesitate to talk sometimes about lines last night. The Purdue game. It was Virginia minus four and a half. And he got over time you figure. Okay. There's no way this game's going to change. And all of a sudden free throws the and other things and Virginia wins by five. I guess it was a big a big swing in that in Vegas in the in the Auburn game earlier you had a Bruce Pearl leading up to the previous game saying everybody just take the over. And he was exactly right. I think I came up for like one seventy something and the over was like one sixty eight but you see that do you expect? I mean, I is it going to have to be that kind of game for them to beat Kentucky. They have to hit their shots. Hit a hit ninety points. I don't think they're going to have to hit ninety because Kentucky's not nearly the same offensive team is when PJ Washington fully healthy, the only really have two scores in that last round win with Tyler hero coming up with nineteen PJ Washington playing well, but if guys like Tilden Johnson or struggling for Kentucky, and they're just as comfortable playing slow grinded out game in the sixties or the seventies. As we saw the Houston wins. So Auburn doesn't need to get to ninety. But they definitely have a better chance of winning because they've gotta hit those primitive shots as I mentioned that's really the basis of their offense. And if they're not turning you over and they're not getting pointers and auburn's offense can struggle in the half court. Okay. I saved the best for last, or at least a lot of people are saying is the best. There may be some people saying, well, I missed Auburn Kentucky. But I'm not gonna miss Duke. And Michigan State Tom Izzo a guy who made you know, all the all the new segments earlier this year this tournament for yelling at his player heaven forbid, yell at the guy. But now you've got is Izzo against coach K you've got Duke with their. Freshman going against Michigan state. It's so amazing because we all talk about tying Williamson. We always talk about our RJ Barrett. But it was trade Jones has got him to where they are with what he did in the second half of their last game. Yeah. That was critical for the blue devils. We know how good are cheaper. Williamson are going to get most of their buckets from two point range. They're not create three points shooters and for Jones to hit a couple of those three pointers particularly with cameras being out with mysterious knee injury. Ten minutes before tip off Duke really needed that perimeter spacing in order to get past..

"E dot com slash talk. You'll start hagan's Johnson hero. Travis and Montgomery, the home white. With the blue and gray trip. The checkerboard Dow the jerseys and shorts Houston, the all black jerseys with a red numerals and trim and a red lettering saying boosted across their chests Fabian, white juniors gotta be careful these leaning all over. EJ Montgomery interrupts to telling them just back up to inbound the ball yet. Clearly uses coming out with renewed purpose. Let's see whether or not it can get a little bit of a jumpstart. Now's kentucky. It's accidents. Get on our rights hero. To Montgomery hands. Back to hero now. Twenty three from the hoop crossover dribble. Take down the lane shot out of the way. And it's good a nice take like Tyler hero, the freshman from a walkie and elitist now thirteen Kentucky six five. He's being guarded by Davis junior. Who's an excellent defender. He's giving away four inches. Dr a throw through nearside bridgewater's up and it's a brick the Corey Davis junior sake the rebound set play to get shot. But nothing good afternoon. At the end throws back behind Johnson Watson three shot is too strong off the back iron. Now, a scramble for the loose basketball diving on it is Montgomery, and he keeps the rebound alive. Shacklock Kentucky as they throw the top. That's a hustle play right there. Go terribly starts so far. They give up are running layup missing three and not give up an offensive rebound to Jay, Washington, Georgia. Office hero drives to the foul. Line kicks back behind the Hague. Down the right block reach Travis high low low low pass that down past stolen away by Houston. Robinson forecourt? The dribble alive and his team. Stuck thirteen. The Cougars have to get to work your pensively light. Once waterside Robinson up on top tramonte Brooks Brooks, riding riding, the Laney trapping voters on the way, it's off the back iron. No good. Balch hall. It's gonna come on the possibility of the rebound. The fight underneath is going to result in a foul on Fabian white. That's going to be his third. So that would govern a mile away. We did before they even lined up before they even inbounded the ball. You want to be aggressive? Yes. But you gotta be smart. Take yourself out of the game. That's what happened in the first to three different base for you. TJ Washington back and forth. Kentucky a catch and shoot from the left side. No good for hero at the rebound down to white. Which had the Cougars. Gordon, a little floated no good for Robinson. But he's fouled on his way to the basket. So Houston's got to get a free throw it out at that. Bell will be on Hagans. It will be this third. So a thirteen point lead for Kentucky over Houston as we welcome. You back into our Westwood One studios here in New.

"Is dominating right now. Drew Brees moved up a little bit. I think he's betting on his Purdue Boilermakers to go far Bryan Cranston, still hanging tough Wayne Gretzky's in their Dale Earnhardt, jR, I'm in a battle with Michael Douglas, John smoltz's their Pauly's there. So. It's an interesting race here. But you know, there's not a lot of big changes here. Not a lot of drama. Yes. Woah, you ever not look at your bracket for a couple of days. And you forget who you picked as I'm watching Texas Tech, Texas Tech. Their defense is great. Antastic because I assumed I had Texas Tech going. Then look I have Nevada in the final in the lead eight terrible. I've done that where I'm rooting for a team. And then I and you know, then the team loses that I'm rooting for. And I go what was I doing? I had the other team. So you fill out these brackets so long ago and Mario doing a great job. He filled out my bracket. So I'm kind of hanging in there. Pretty tough will Ferrell is last will Ferrell did Email me yesterday. And he said that he was going to wear his Jackie moon jersey. I didn't see him on CBS yesterday. During those games he was going to wear the warmup jacket. He was taking his kids to the game. And he said that hey, I'm going to wear the Jackie moon. Outfit. And I'm also gonna call in next week and sing the song memories. And that'll be as we say goodbye to the man cave next week. We'll say Hello to Pat forty from. Yahoo sports their national college columnist. He'll join us coming up. He was in Louisville last night for Purdue Tennessee and also. Oregon in Virginia, Oregon Virginia tough watch tough watch waiting for Virginia to shoot like I know they can shoot and they've been surviving with because they're gonna have well they better have a game where they hit these threes because they're going to need to. And I watched Michigan last night in Michigan has a wonderful coach John B line. But we always say the same thing when it comes to Michigan. Do they have enough offense? They play great defense. But you have to have some offense. Texas Tech plays great defense, but they have some offense in the future NBA star and Culver. I think Michigan's got a if they haven't already come to an understanding realization is college basketball's changed dramatically, and it's not necessarily a team sport there. There are moments for individuals in this sport. And that's what you have to find you have to have a couple of these guys who can create isolation and they can score points because Michigan didn't have enough points in that. Lineup as they move forward. You know, he's probably going to have to surrender a little bit of that control that he has to find some of these Purdue has that Purdue has Carson Edwards, and he's a wonderful score. But if you look at a lot of these teams, they do have that guy. They do have somebody that you can isolate he can get a shot because you need to have that certainly in tournament time when you have a little bit tensor situation lot more at stake. And can you go you who's your go-to guy? And Michigan did not have that already poll question. Mclovin is putting up there was it a foul, and we're fifty fifty on the produce Tennessee and the regulation. All right, bringing a Pat forty from. Yahoo sports national college columnist. He was there for that produce Tennessee finished. What did you make of that call last night, Pat? You know, I thought that there was contact lower body contact. Did it affect the shot? No. But the rule is that the shooter is shooting until they're back on the floor. So I think you can call it. You know, you kind of eight the game that good come down to a if he called. But I can't say it was a terrible call Rick Barnes afterwards said it was a bowel. So I'm I'm going to say, the would you call it? Yeah. I think I probably would've. Killjoy anyway. Naturally. You labeled Oregon Virginia Virginia's win ugly. Why? Yes. Yes. I did. I mean, the stretch of like eight straight possessions were not only that nobody score. Nobody came close to scoring complete futility. And I I mean, Oregon is just settling for these give up three pointers. They were gassed Virginia was flailing around looking like the weight of the world is on them. And. I watch the first game. Go eighty to eighty two in regulation in this game early one team gets to fifty a pretty stark contrast. I quoted you from your column yesterday where you know, it feels like there's more of an outcry. You got to pay these athletes. I I wonder where that outcry will be in a couple of years when we are through with the one in done where the marquee players will go into the NBA, and we'll have these players that might need to spend two years or three years in college. Yeah. I think that would be a great antidote. Really? So this situation they don't make guys go. But don't wanna go don't, you know, send the economy underground and have everybody, you know, lying denying what's going on. Let them go pro that wanna go. They don't have to pretend to be students. They don't have to pretend they're not being paid. And I just think it would work a whole lot better end charade. I still think college basketball would be an interesting product. There's no denying that. It was great for college basketball Zayn Williamson this year. But. If he doesn't wanna be college. He doesn't need to be in college. Why should he have to go to college? But if I said to you come up with a pay scale, could you come up with something that we could somehow pay these athletes? You know, that's a really good question. And that's where I think a like a name, image and likeness thing would maybe make it a little bit easier because then there would be a market value. Like, you know, a John Williams would have one market value and Alex O'Connell off the bench for Duke would have a different one. And otherwise, if you're if you're just handing out cookie cutter payments of ten thousand dollars to each guy. I'm not sure that would work as well. So I I would like to see something tied to name image likeness for you. You can sell jerseys that say Williamson on the back and Williamson gets a cut of it. You know, you can sell other merchandise like that. I I think that might be the best close. What do you think? Zion. Williamson is worth this season to college basketball, if you were going to put a number all. Tens of millions of dollars. I would say I just think that the ratings have been humongous when they have played ticket prices have been huge. That was the thing that that really hit me. I talked to a guy ticket guy before the tournament started in. We're looking at possibly having North Carolina Kentucky, and Kansas all in Kansas City. And you think that tickets going to be crazy? And the tickets NBC were Duke was going to be we're one hundred dollars higher than that. So I mean, he is the biggest ticket driver I've ever seen in college basketball. You also brought up that a lot of these teams are under investigation or the cloud of suspicion you brought up what happening Kansas where an assistant coach is wire tapped, I guess he's talking to an Dita's rap who is telling him. This is what it's gonna cost if Kansas wants to get si- on Williamson into Kansas. So are we to believe then that only Kansas was the one who was? Alerted to this is what it was gonna cost to get Zion. Williamson that nobody else had a conversation on that. He just went to get a scholarship. It stands to reason that everybody that was involved with sign away knew what the going rate was going to be. So you know that. If you don't think so then I don't know what to tell you the only thing that makes it plausible that perhaps didn't pay is that he committed like three months after everybody had to go scared straight when when the feds flu everything up, and maybe by then the market had disappeared, and you can't really walk around with your hand out at that point. But if before September twenty six two thousand seventeen when the feds went public with this everybody was recruiting John Williamson, I would think had to know what was going to cost to get time. Lynch, and you I'm we're not surprised we've been around this a long long time that these kids get paid. And I understand why they have their hand down. I mean, I understand it, and I would too if if I was on Williamson, and I could better my family better my life, still get you know, one year under coach K and then go to the NBA. I I understand it because these kids this is the only sport side from football. But they're not ready when they're coming out of high school where we say, oh, you got to protect these kids. We don't care about kids in any other sport. But somehow we wanna protect our brackets and our March madness here, which is what it comes down to. Sure, you're right. And and I look most of these kids are smart enough to know they've been come from all the time. So from time their about fifteen years old a good ones that really good one. Because you know, AAU teams are are battling for them. Sneaker companies are coming in saying, yeah, we'll pay you two hundred thousand dollars sponsor your team. You know, they're being asked to, you know, live in one place in play for another team you team over here. They they know what's going on here. So that for them. Then to get the collagen expected that say, oh, well, never mind. I'm now a pure amateur. I is is incredibly night. What schools in the most trouble? Do you think? Oh boy. I mean, I I think LSU from what we know right now. Just because I I don't think there is any way to misinterpret what will way to sing on the wiretap, and that's gonna be a tough one to explain. And as a matter of fact, he hasn't even bothered to try to. I know I know and then he can't say, hey, I want to get out of purgatory. I want my job back here. And I'm like, no, no, no. If you explain explain what you're talking about with this. Great offer that you were giving one of your recruits. I mean, come on. Strong offer. Hilarious. Disfavor was fantastic. It was basically I want my job back because I want my job. Yeah. You know? I'm not gonna I'm not gonna explain anything. I'm not going to admit anything. But I just want to coach. So let me coach. Okay. Sorry. We'll doesn't work that way. I think Robert Kraft might have a better explanation for what he's guilty of then we'll wait at LSU. I think. Speaking of underground economies. Yeah. How do you? How do you think? Tonight plays out. You know, I I really interested in the games in Kansas City. I I think Kentucky without TJ Washington could be in trouble against Houston. I don't expect them to be able to plan if he does sectors. He would be. I think North Carolina. Like beats Auburn one hundred to five to ninety. It'll be a really up and down toward game should be a lot of fun. And then I expect the Duke and Michigan state to advance to one heck of original file good to visit with us. Always Pat keeps turn it up. All right. Thank you. Bad forty. Yahoo. Sports national college columnist. "He is co host of CBS sports eye on college basketball podcast, and we consider him a very good friend of the program. Matt norlander is my guest Matt good to have you back. How are you? I guess relieved that hawker called me. I think that the phone. I didn't think it'd be him. But I might be another member of the extra for TI when it was him, I presume that he actually bailed on the marathon. But Jim hold on a second. Are you telling me right now, this guy ran a marathon is back in the studio. What's going on here? Kim plated the marathon in the studio rocking the metal around his neck to prove it. It's a real thing had happened that I know we're all kind of shocked. I'm gonna need video evidence to make sure we don't have Rosie Ruiz back in like eighty one. We need we need the clones. Now. He did. Did it took my twelve hours? But he did do it. All right. Let me ask you this. How many times have you watched the replay of Aubrey Dawkins tip it in at the end of the UCF do game and matter he like me and thinking that that shot is going to go down every single time. And never does. Yeah. You know, what you know, what came to mind? I've watched it at least fifteen times, I still can't believe that Denham Brown shot did not go in in two thousand six knockout, George Mason and the AA tournament nearly date there because this is what we see happen so often, and you know, it's part of the drama part of the heartbreak, and frankly, I think for casual fans I watched the tournament root for the brackets be blown up part of the frustration. Is that the higher seeded the blue, bud? The big dogs. They just almost always seem to escape in these kinds of situations. You can't even believe that ball didn't fall in not only that though if taco fall doesn't fell out and he deserved a foul out. Don't get me wrong. But if he doesn't foul out are not grabbing that up into rebound to put it back and put Duke up by one late. So for UCF have three or four things not go your way for due to escape, of course, Ducas Duke and things wound up going to sway it moves on. But I will say that there's been a lot of talk about how Zion Williamson has made Duke likable. I I have no issue with you. But I reject that premise. Zion. Williamson has made Duke very watchable more watchable than it's ever been. But I I on Twitter game. I think you know, what it's not actually has made duplicate then if you're watching the game right now, and you normally don't like Duke you're going to be rooting for them to win. And I got as the kids say ratio into the ground by no means people rooting for Duke to win that game. But if you're also honest with yourself. Having a Duke versus Virginia. Tech matchup in the Sweet Sixteen just a little bit more enticing and appealing than say, a UCF versus Virginia Tech matchup's. So we have that to look forward to and what did say bury stout. Sweet Sixteen played a game. Matt norlander joining us a like it. All right. So if you're buzz Williams and Virginia Tech, and you've already beaten Duke once this year, and yes, they did. So without Zay on. But if you're buzz, what are you taking away from that game? Well, I mean, you're taking away one that we're gonna play this game relatively close to Blacksburg. We get in DC. And we know we're going to have a free a pretty good strong attention. You're taking away that we didn't have Justin Robinson in that game. And now he's back. We get to be refreshed week too. By the way, I it will Virginia Texas much closer second week. And then it did I I think is no insignificant thing. And then do much has been made about how poor it is from three point range. It might be becoming a tire talking point a drone benefits from Detroit. If you have not heard, but guess what? It's relevant thirty point seven percent. From three point range Duke will regress to its mean. Virginia Tech on the other hand loves to shoot it from deep does often makes forty percent of its three point shots. Top ten in America from three point range. Now we've seen some freaky stuff in the tournament. Already. Take example, we sell Wofford Kentucky. You have the most prolific three point shooter in the history of the sport have the worst game from three point range ever in the tournament. That's what's your mcgeough twelve no one ever shot that many threes in a game in game and not made one and the guy who's made. More than any wound up doing. So the tournament can be freaky like that. So potentially we get some sort of weird thing. We're Duke shoots forty five percent from three versus Virginia Tech Virginia Tech goes cold. Only makes fifteen percent of it threes and honorable go the blue devils, but the the piston don't say that's going to happen. And when you have the confidence that you've already beaten this team, I think it plays into an advantage for Virginia Tech. I think it's going to be really close. It's going to be hard to top. What Duke UCF was in terms of a watch because that was a tense game. The whole time talking to play the game of his life. But I do think Virginia Tech has a real chance to knock off Duke. I think that would be not as surprising of an upset as say three or four other potential possibilities and second week in like Oregon being Virginia to me would be much more surprising for hottest Oregon is than Virginia. Tech over Duke. Matt norlander joining us there is so much done packing. That let me get you. Stay on Kentucky for minute. Again, Wofford gave Kentucky everything they could handle. And they did. So as you point out will flex McGee going over twelve from deep few John Perry. How? How worried are you about what that means against Houston this week? Or are you all about survive in advance without PJ, Washington? TJ Washington stuff is huge. Him not being available at first of all that whole situation was a little bit shifty there because it seemed like Calipari was kind of trying to pose it at the start like maybe he'll be available. And then the next thing we know he's in a hard cap. He's you know, he's got the leg on the on the little Whealy deal there. And now I mean, maybe he's gonna play. But no PJ Washington. I mean, he is such an important factor. I mean, he has the team's leader. He is he's by far the most important player on that roster. Now you play Houston team. That is not built the way that Wofford is they're very different teams. So maybe you embrace that kind of change of style. This is a team that Houston. That's more built to play like Kentucky would rather play Houston Wofford. I think if you gave them the chance even though Houston has rated as a better team defensively, I think Houston will be good they're guard oriented. So I think it'll be a pretty fascinating match up there like Ashton Hagen on Corey Davis. Maybe Gaylon Robinson. That'll be pretty fun. What Kelvin Sampson's done has been awesome. It's been amazing. They finally get some Sweet Sixteen we know last year. They got they got Jordan pooled at the buzzer. They finally break. Doc on through. I have I have Houston going winning this game. I think it'll be close. It'll be low scoring. It'll be a pretty fascinating watch. Even fact it's going to if you're trying to set up your Thursday and Friday here that game. We'll be snug up against Duke Virginia Tech. So the best window of the sixteen. We'll be the late Friday window have to screens ready because it's going to be an awesome one. But I I do think Houston will move past Kentucky and and get to the leading Matt norlander joining us MacBeth to Oregon for a minute. They're the only double digits left. But there were a preseason top fifteen. They certainly did not look like a twelve yesterday in the way they pulled away from UC Irvine. How different is this ducks team from the one that lost three straight to Oregon state USC and UCLA only a month ago? Oh, it's noticeably different. Now, it's still I will say that. Now, they're hot they have a lot since February twenty third by every single measure every single measure Oregon is the worst from the field. They are there hot. Maybe they're one of the hotter teams, but you take into account everything they've done this season. I mean, they're twenty nine and Ken palm the top fourteen teams that Ken Palmer still alive. Yeah. LSU was eighteen in Oregon all the way back at twenty nine there. Defensively they've been great. Kenny Wootton is is a clone pun intended to Jordan, Bella when we talk Jordan belted two years ago, getting Oregon the final four Kenny wouldn't send a lot of that Lewis. King is playing veteran veteran for them to have done. This ball ball goes down early in the year without an injury. They haven't even had him. They've overcome that in part not because of the big, man. But Payton frittered some of the shots. He hit against Irvine's knockout, the an eaters were we're just absurd like vintage March madness stuff to step back threes, really really impressive. But that said a defensive oriented team. I know that that game against Virginia is expected to be slow like really slow like I a sixty probably win. But Virginia's got a really good offense. I know we were all kind of grip and a little bit with that Gardner Webb start. But they rallied to win by fifteen and then Oklahoma was just within shouting distance. But I still think Virginia's going to it's going to be Oregon. And it's going to beat them in a way where it's like you look up in the final scores say like sixty four to fifty eight, but it feels like sixty six to forty eight kind of deal. I I don't think it's unthinkable that Oregon can win. But I I think Virginia won't get to too much of a push we're covering as much ground as we can with Matt norlander. He joins us once again Maccabi white had seventeen points, six rebounds in North Carolina's bludgeoning of Washington, you did a video piece of ham for CBS sports. And in that piece, you pointed out he's the highest going freshmen in UNC history. Breaking MJ's record when you look at Carolinas. Incredible history. Have they ever had a freshman like him? They haven't thanks for bringing that up, by the way. Jim I appreciate that. Yeah. Do you check that out? If you could Kobe white got he's got one heck of a story actually think he's now the most with John ran out of the tournament, the nonviolent division of the most watchable players, and there's still plenty of fun, dude. But to me Koby, white he's almost got like a little rusty Smith and in terms of unpredictability, but antastic scoring guard. You know, he never thought he would be at North Carolina. But he committed only a few days African official offer his father was still alive and his father got diagnosed with cancer and that that disease took him quickly. So his dad never got the team playing a uniform, and it's it's kind of been a bittersweet thing for him. But he is a fun guy to watch I talked with where Williams multiple times throughout the season about what it's been like a to coach Kobe, and there's a lot of town. It's like I'm not trying to shortchange Luke maye Cam Johnson. But they've been able to do little it's coming on too strong little compla- like this then. Yeah, they can win the national championship, but Koby white can go. I mean, he is the fastest point guard. That ROY ever had not named high Lawson and the way that he can score distribute, and yet sometimes, yeah, he can get a get a little ahead of himself. He's a freshman, but they have never had anyone like him. And he is it's not just the scoring stuff. He is he set Mark that have not been done by UNC freshman before. So he makes to me more than anyone UNC must watch it's ever been. And that's that's still unloaded reason. They got there. You've got some some big time coach is still around. But I still like North Carolina's come out. All right. So before you go you mentioned John Mirant back on Thursday, you're in Hartford for the John Morand show..

"Play. And I don't think that that Nova just overwhelms you athletically, on the ball defensively that the way they have in the past. And I think it'll be a close game. I do I'm with you on Nove. And there's I mean, this is an unbelievable coaching job. The did Jay has done. Just you know. Better than we did last year. So many players they were completely bought in terms of their system and style, but but considering the beatings they were taking the pressure that was on the team and to get together. However down the big east was it doesn't matter bid novas. Everybody's biggest game. He's done amazing job. And then I think Raimi's done rain, these guys like, I don't I I still don't know other than fact that he's he's a tough interview. I still know how he's stated at at Saint Mary's all this time. We're I'm not I'm not gonna bring up Kentucky in terms of Abilene Christian. What do you think Kentucky team right now? I actually really like him. And I said this I can't remember if I said it's on a hurt or speak. But I I think that winter I think it says you the winner of Kentucky North Carolina goes to the championship game. And I think Kentucky is a completely different team from November clearly different team when they all steamed home simmer. I think that there gore plays really developed. I think part of that's because quasi Green Left, and they were able to kind of get some just identity at that position with ashen Hagans ups things defensively he can pass and then Tyler hero has really taken a positive step forward and TJ Washington. The last half of the seasons. Play like a first team all American all that combined. I've talked about Calvin Johnson. So I think like I think I actually think this is one of Calgary's really good coaching jobs to like, I think he has them going in the right direction at just the right time. And I you know, if you watch I don't know if you saw that. Tournament semi when they when when they lost to to Tennessee, they call that game up. They had that game on and read Travis fouled out and loose balls. That read Travis probably give if he's in the game. And I think he's he may be one of their most important players just because he's kind of their physical bulldozer inside that rebound. I I would not be surprised. I picked Duke to my breath. I will not be surprised if they if they were cutting down with that. And I know you. Yeah. I did. And I it's interesting that the addition by subtraction and the guard spot when you don't have a guy you have to put in that they had early this year and how much better they are. Because of it, you know, like, I just. Oh, yeah. I mean, listen quasi green. I pointed out on Twitter. This is back when they lost to Duke. He keep come in the game. And he was like trying to prove himself. I that he could make shots second that he could run a team, and he wasn't graded either. And then there was terrible defensive balance. And then, you know, it's just also when when guys are unhappy with their role and guys are not really bought into it..

So I'm sure that Ben Howlett look at this situation saying if I could have just made one or two four in the first half instead of that goose egg. But you have to give Kentucky credit they had some answers late the ballgame and were able to stay ahead of a three point shooting team who was close ever so close that that's the most dangerous team. But you know, they can knock down the tray. And they're only down three this a real good learning experience for this Kentucky team, Mike, I think because this had the feel of an NCAA tournament game you build a big lead you get hot. But in that situation when it's one out that other teams gonna come back, and you're going to have to make some big plays to keep them at bay guitar was able to make enough of the they did they kept the ball alive. Kelder Johnson in EJ. Montgomery then the drive-by PJ Washington big plays down the stretch.
