"titans baltimore ravens" Discussed on Behind the Steel Curtain

"On my mind an awful lot with with these things but what i want to do. Yes it stinks about what happened to the playoffs. I wanted to see how the steelers got to that point and you can use the regular season to see how this team was trending and believe it or not. It's very interesting. The way broke. Data the reason that says steelers quarterly is because when when. Nfl coaches look at their seasons. As they're going and everything afterwards and whatnot they look at it in four quarters because you play sixteen games. At least that's what they've been playing Since one thousand nine hundred seventy eight seventy eight But you know next year could be that seventeenth game. What we'll see if that comes through or not has a lot to do with the tv deals but when you break it down that way you're basically playing four four game seasons so if you look at specifically those quarters at how things went with those quarters. It's going to tell you a lot. So let's break it down for four twenty twenty steelers by quarter. So i'd compare them with the rest of the nfl and the pairing the every team's first four games so that way it couldn't be no. Oh you went through the first four weeks of the season. Seventeen weeks where you're going to throw it in. Don't care where teams buys were so it wasn't but the exact same date it was every team's games one through four and here's how it broke down. I looked at your overall yardage points for offense and defense how the steelers were ranked. And then i also looked at passing yards and rushing yards both offense and defense in each quarter and saw how they ranked in what they gave up. So let's look at it back when the steelers played their first four games where they went four and now it's important to know who the opponents were with some of these things because the steelers they face the giants the broncos the texas in the eagles. Those were all that did end up with losing records past season. That's i mean that's that's the truth behind it it. It is what it is but all you can do is play. Play the teams on your schedule but if you look at what the steelers did on offense they were they were ranked thirteenth in the nfl. In yards over the first four games they've ranked tenth in points scored. They were ranked twentieth in passing yards. And they were ranked eighth in rushing yards. So remember back. Those first four games of the season the steelers were rushing while they had five hundred and fifty five yards in the first four games of the season. They did not have that many rushing yards in their final eight games this season. So as you can see this team i mean when you look at their overall rushing yards for the for the season they only had thirteen fifty. So so you're talking about over a third of their rushing yards. Were in the first quarter of the season so that that's very interesting that they started off that way and they were running the football and it wasn't even just james conner because he got injured early in week one and benny snell rush for over one hundred yards so but if you look at the steelers defensively they were ranked third in the nfl. In yards surrendered they were ranked seventh in the nfl and point surrendered they were ranked thirteenth in the nfl in passing yards surrendered and they were ranked. First in the nfl in rushing yards. Given up the first four games the steelers rushed for five hundred fifty yards and they gave up. Only two hundred and fifty charts. That's how they started. That's how the season started. And but those passing yards were down the steelers were selling out against the the run with some of these young quarterbacks. You know that's what they did against saquon barkley and things of that sort so it was quite quite interesting. They just didn't want teams in the ball. So then you turn into the second quarter of the season so here comes the second quarter of the season. And you've got this is where the opponents got to be a little bit better opponents but the steelers still want four and out of those opponents three of the four finished with winning records and made the post season. 'cause they played the cleveland browns tennessee. Titans baltimore ravens and dallas cowboys. Those were their next four games. Four no again. The steelers offensively their yards dropped from thirteenth in the first quarter to twenty eight in the second quarter they were twenty eight. The nfl in offensive yards gained but they actually increased their ranking in offense of points scored from eighth from ten to eight. They went from ten to eight. And what's what's interesting is. They actually scored one last point in the second quarter of the season they escorted hundred and eighteen points in the first quarter of the season. One hundred seventeen the second quarter but that hundred and seventeen actually raised their ranking their their their offensive passing yards were twentieth in the nfl and they're rushing yards went from eight to thirty. I dropped all the way down the thirty first now. Part of that was the teams that they were playing against. But that's you would thought at the time but as you see it didn't really get much much better actually. It could barely get worse and it did so when you look at the defensive side of the ball they get. They gave their eighth in yard surrendered. They were fifth in points surrendered so there was even that was even better against the quality opponents. The revai gave up fewer points up. Seventy four points in the second quarter versus eighty seven in the first quarter and went from break seventh-ranked rank fifth and they were. They did much better in their past defense. They were ranked seventh in the nfl. But what happened. Was there rush. Defense dropped from first to twenty eighth so they went from two hundred and fifty six yards two five hundred sixty six yards like. Wow that's a big deal but you also gotta look at who they were playing. They played the kluber cleveland. Browns nick chubb in play game. But they only gave up seventy five rushing yards. they played derrick henry. The tennessee titans the only gave up. Eighty two rushing yards. You're like wow..

james conner five hundred fifth sixteen games thirteen fifty ten seventeenth game derrick henry two next year First Seventeen weeks first four games eight games Eighty two rushing yards second quarter tenth twenty eighth five hundred fifty yards first four weeks

"In arrowhead sunday to oh five. Pm central time on cbs. The chiefs are already boys listed nine and a half point favorites in some places. I think that's fine. I think that sounds about right. Frankly but let's talk a little bit about the bills in the colts. Talk about the titans in the ravens. Guys nothing. I just first off one thing. I kinda of my take away from this weekend. Watching the browns watching the titans are watching the ravens and the bills. I'm sorry none. I about what i saw this weekend scares me about the cheese pat to the afc. I want the path of least resistance at any given time believe that's i don't. I don't want the moral victories. Or whatever on the way to a super bowl victory. I want it to be as easy as possible for my team to win a super bowl. I literally. I do not care if they go up against backup quarterback the rest of the way through i. I really don't care. Just win the ring. That's all i care about butts nothing about but nothing about this. This weekend really scared me a start with titans ravens again. That happened on sunday. It was a close game. Mattie kind of alluded to it the like one of the worst putting decisions of the entire weekend mattie amid this one goes right. If i still think mike cobbles was worse but mike vrabel deciding to plant was also a head scratcher towards the end of this game and he thought that his defense. You'd get a stop or something. I don't know what the logic was there. But i think in this game you still saw much of what you expect out of the baltimore ravens. Who ended up winning the game. Twenty to thirteen over the tennessee. Titans baltimore ravens. Go onto play the buffalo bills. I believe that is the prime time night game on saturday. And you saw lamar jackson of the first half incredibly struggling to try to throw the football most of the throwing in the second half did it look much better. It was just a wide open guys but with the ravens were able to figure out in the second half was calling designed. Qb runs kinda works the nfl because most teams don't really know how to stop it and now the ravens are going up. They're going to go bills defense. It's not very good. I think that does make the ravens team kind of dangerous. They have a feisty defense. That could cause some problems up there it buffalo. So you fast aggressive defense with a offense. It's kind of figuring out if they don't try to throw the ball. They function because they add a running back playing quarterback and they might have a chance like they could go out there. Give the bills a little bit of a game. I would love to see. Whoever was this game. I would love to see their defense on the field for eighty plus plays too. Because i'm with can't i don't care about moral victories. I have more than happy to play the lowest seeds that are the most tired players in the entire league on the way to the second super bowl. Knock down drag out fights with a bunch of one week injuries. We don't hope for serious injuries. Just just one week things. Because that's what these guys were saying right now. Now that titans ravens game was was a definitely back and forth game one of the closer ones that we've seen this weekend. I felt it was a pretty decent game but neither one of those teams was executing at a high level. I mean derrick. Henry couldn't get anything going and the titans offense really suffered for it. The only things that they really had going for him in a big way was chuck in it up to age. Aj brown who is a monster and came down with some awesome stuff. Lamar had to take some things into his own hands. That worked out for him. So i do think that ravens team is still a little bit spicy i. I still wouldn't have been worried about them if they were playing the chiefs this weekend. But i do like that. The chiefs are getting. This browns team again lost to the jets three weeks ago instead of that ravens team that little saltier and may be able to hang with them a little bit better. I think the steelers got blown out by the buffalo bills. Oh my goodness yes and so you know. I think. I think the baltimore ravens. They're a team that i look. I'm gonna be confident in the chiefs. Winning against anyone left in on either side i. That's what i'm going to say but like going back to the path of least resistance a ravens bills path is that's tougher than browns and one of the two that get in a dogfight next week between the two of them. I'd rather them come out of at dogfighting. The cheese just coming off the browns and a double digit victory. That is i look. Here's the thing about the rape. And the reason. I didn't wanna play the ravens in the in the division or preferred is. Because i do believe in this. I believe in the towel football team. I think there's a high ceiling to that football team. That you've got some stars you got some playmakers on both sides of the ball. You've got lamar. Who is you know we. You know this team. Lamar run if you control the game script. If you control the clock lamarque and make you pay. And that's something that a little bit concerned about now. They don't have to worry about plano and they're gonna have to play a bills team that really for being the hottest team in football and everybody was fawning over. They really looked pretty humid against a bad cold team. Mattie yeah. I don't think the bills are overly impressive. Josh allen played a quality football game. And i think that's why the bills are still the number two seed in the afc. So it makes sense. It's kind of a captain obvious. Move air but they're the most dangerous team to the chiefs in the afc because they have the one quarterback in the afc. That probably could go toe to toe with patrick mahomes. They have a good set a weapons. They haven't often of on. Its playing well enough. You could see the bills coming in and scoring thirty points while the chiefs scored thirty one points. You can see josh allen throwing for three four touchdowns while patrick mahomes does the same because they've been back on offense this year but their defense is a bad defense. Their defense doesn't seem like it's particularly situationally. Good the colts game plan was to wa secret. It was pretty bland. It was pretty obvious. And philip rivers is just out there throwing yellow balls up like he always does and the bills weren't really sure how to stop it. Said third defense looks anything but scary. You know what their offense can do. So is this yeah i. Nobody's scary. No team out there. The bills did not look like the most dangerous team in during the playoffs. Like you would expect them to based on the media narrative and the bills lost it appeared to have lost. Zack moss He was carted off in this game. He's been a little bit of their bell. Cow guy down the stretch here although they were running a lot more read option with josh allen. I'll tell you what if the bills want to run more. Read option against a steve spagnolo defense. We've seen how he's handled that they do really really well..

lamar jackson Josh allen mike vrabel josh allen thirty points patrick mahomes saturday Henry Mattie second half Lamar Zack moss next week Twenty lamar three weeks ago first half one week thirty one points first

"Twenty twenty regular season. It's hard to believe but here we are a lot of people. Didn't think we would be here. Meaning a lot of people didn't think that the nfl season would be able to actually go off without a hitch. And i can't say that there have not been hitches but here we are preparing for week. Seventeen the pittsburgh steelers in pretty much meaningless week. Seventeen game as they traveled to cleveland to play the the browns. Or whoever's left with that. Let's bring in brian. Anthony davis our podcast producer. What's up brian. how are you. Hey happy almost new year. This is the last day of twenty twenty and like you said jeff. It's been crazy year. I didn't think we'd be here. And it is amazing that they didn't do the best way but they they got it done and they got us here and so now. There's one more regular season weekend before the playoffs. I can't believe it. Absolutely any. Other co editor. Dave scofield update. How's it going. No more games left in two thousand twenty. Yeah this is a. This is a depressing day for me just because of the new year's new year whatever. It's the end of the week. Seventeen everyone talks about how the wild card round and the divisional round of the best weekend's football and i'm not disagreeing with that but when you lose the regular season i it's over you know the there's only so many games left and i love the nfl. I love football and pretty soon. We're going to be in the doldrums of the off season and talking about the draft and that's depressing for me. That's really i tell you last weekend i think was the weekend when you had. It was christmas day than you had a game. You had three games back to back on on saturday. The whole the whole what. All the game. Sunday the regular three time slots and a game on monday. That was that was glorious and no game no days off in between that was just a lot of football to go through and it was great and the steelers wrapped up. Emc north absolutely and for those that are watching us live with your facebook or youtube. Some you might say well. Why are they going on so early. Well it's christmas eve where i've said that like my wife's like are you okay. It's new year's eve. And so you know a lot of people have plans and things like that so we decided to jump on here early and make sure that we get the show in and unlike last week brian. Anthony davis joining us. So of may we obviously before we get started your a talk some news. Let's let's let's get right into the nitty gritty. And that is the fact of right now. The cleveland browns. They're covid situation is not looking good while there are some positives the fact that those four wide receivers that were high risk contacts were all removed from the covid nineteen reserve list today to more players tested positive and the nfl has to be keeping. Its fingers crossed. This thing does not escalate into what we've seen with the tennessee. Titans baltimore ravens which just so happened to always involve the pittsburgh steelers. It seems like guys. I don't want to talk about the players or anything like that or the number of positives. I wrote an article that ran early this morning on thursday and it was that in the. Nfl's absolute nightmare would be if this turns into an outbreak. How do you think the. Nfl's going to handle this. If there are continued positives they cannot move. This game i i. They can't move into monday. Because that would put the steelers in the buying the fact that they are already playoff-bound if you are to look into your crystal ball. How do you see this taking going down with the national football league in how they handle this. Brian will start with you. I would think that If push comes to shove what they would ultimately do if they had to they would just Give everybody a by next week. He accepted the steeler and browns. The ones affected by. That's and i think that is a horrible idea. But i could see that coming back in cracking the steelers again with another team with another team's woes and what. We don't know what happened in cleveland. I'm not saying saying that but if it is an outbreak. That's probably what i'd expect however i think they are going to do everything they possibly can. They're going to stretch it because they can't stretch it anymore. If this was any other team they'd be doing the same thing i mean. They have luxuries when it was thanksgiving in. When it was the ravens they had luxuries when it was week. Four and they had a teams had buys in. They could move that tennessee pittsburgh game but they don't have that luxury now so it's really going to be there. Have to be fifteen guys out before they decided to move this game. Dave what are your thoughts. Well the nfl keep saying this is not an outbreak. This is not the with all their tracing and everything that these players are not catching this from each other. They're getting it for other places. For example the one positive test from today thursday with someone who was actually already put on the covert list because they were deemed at a close contact to somebody else outside the facility where they had to report that. Hey i was in. I don't know if it's a family member or or whatnot and testing positive so this person went on the list and then they ended up getting it so that one wasn't about that was the tight end. That wasn't a very big surprise. So you can't take the numbers from yesterday and the numbers today and two separate numbers because they at least somewhat overlap but the nfl. The whole thing that came down to with the baltimore ravens and the tennessee. Titans both times this year has got screwed over. Just to say it bluntly was because they were spreading it around to each other. They do not believe that. This is the case here in cleveland. Now could it be the case and they don't want to say that's the case because they know how desperately they need to play this game this week. That's a possibility you say. This is a nightmare situation. What if it's next week. Yeah i can. This is one of the reasons why a lot of people. I'm not one of them but a lot of people said should the nfl go into a bubble for the postseason. In which case you are going to avoid obviously everyone's going to be tested etc etc but With that said i'd i understand. Yeah the playoffs. It could be bad. It's it's going to be on the players to like you mentioned. The browns players that have tested positive did not get it from the organization. They're going to have to really be smart and every team is the steelers have been one of those fortunate teams. It seems like in. Mike tomlin loud at his team for taking responsibility in his tuesday. Press conference But you know what they cannot move this game not even a day not even a day. The nfl has to come out..

"In position right now. I mean if i'm wrong. They're right there. And here's what i say about the new york. Giants their effort energy enthusiasm and also overcome some of the talent efficiencies that they have on their roster. I will give joe judge a ton of credit. Look the methods might have been viewed a little high school ish. But he has these guys believe in. They're playing hard. And i would say that all the teams that we're seeing in the east bay maybe the most world because we don't see these fundamental errors from them that we're seeing other teams and that gives them a chance. I don't know if they're talented enough to give the t shirt and a hat. But it's looking like they're going to be in a position. The last three or four games to play for t shirt and hat and i think significant for jo jobs in this first you look you can look around the division and we can try and make excuses and say looked washington. Football teams got a new coaching staff. You kind of look at some of the injuries that they might be dealing with. Look at the eagles even though they've had a myriad of injuries offensive line has been siege by injuries. You look at the dallas cowboys. Losing dak prescott. That's big as well. This giants team best player hasn't played played one game. When you look at saquon barkley missing him for the entire year. They did mope about it. I know the winds haven't tallied up but they're competitive each and every week they know exactly who and what they are very physical. You see those defensive line. I think when you look at dexter lawrence and leonard williams wave bladed side has been really really good group for them. dalvin tomlinson. Those three guys. They've a really good strong group up there that place physical so they know who they are. And i'm with you. I mean to me. This is a team guys. This is a six and ten one team. That's have a good chance of winning individual vision. We saying it's insane. When daniel jones doesn't turn the ball over they can win football games and didn't turn the ball over and they could have easily have two or three more when they can easily have two or three more wednesday been competitive and a bunch of those games have lost some leads late in those games as well but again hats off hats off to joe judge. Daniel jones hassle had some criticism early on and they've battled through it and right now the the new york giants right in the thick of it. Well another week is in the books here buck and as we look for just a little bit here at the end man. We've got some good matchups next week thinking about in the afc. You got two great games at tennessee. Titans baltimore ravens. You also have the kansas city chiefs. Las vegas raiders and a divisional match up. Yeah if see west. Matchup is really intriguing. Me haven't played on both sides. I know what it means to be against the chief and to talk about reiter week. I also know what jon gruden is telling his guys when it comes to measuring up against the chiefs and because they knocked them off early in the year. Oh you may see. Patch mahomes in crew unleashed. It's going to be hungry bunch. I think there. I think that's safe to say with patrick mahomes and the kansas city chiefs all right. That's going to do it for us today. Thank you guys. For hanging with us another takeaway episode is in the books. But stay with us. We'll be around each and every week as we march the season going towards the playoffs and the super bowl while of your takeaways each and every week right here on move. "On offense knowing your favorite teams in action on a Tuesday night think about that day and what you're gonna do after work and how it factors into your day to day mood and when it's taken away from you there is a void there's no doubt about it so people always ask me this because I tell them October is my busiest month of the year but the spring March and early April or my second busiest you know stretches of the year either if if we're not in twenty twenty what does a typical week look like for you in March or maybe early April I in when you are zipping all over the place yeah I I've got to tell you in the it's it's one of those stretches of time that I always look forward to but I also know the challenge involved in it and I often say to myself I'd like to write myself a letter every year and seal it and then open it up just as the NCAA tournament is about to begin and all the letter which areas it's all gonna be OK you'll hate it would actually be very very appropriate right now with what's happening in the world and a reminder that a potentially it's all gonna be OK how it pertains to the NCAA tournament preparing for that event is so different than anything else that I do everything else that scheduled out I know who the nets for playing on a given night I know that I'm working the Tennessee Titans Baltimore Ravens game on the schedule I can see it I can prepare for it I can chip away over the course of the days leading up to the event and feel like I've done everything in my power to prepare the way the NCAA tournament is set up you cannot speculate on who you're going to have and what city you're going to be and you don't find out until selection Sunday around eight o'clock eight thirty at night you get a phone call and I've looked at all the venues and looked at all the matchups and in my own head I've determined oh boy Providence would be perfect for me because I've seen five of the eight teams and all repaired and I'll get a head start and then you'll get the phone call and it's like it's slow motion I am Hey you're going to he school all often times it's happened in my twenty two years of doing tournament I'll take the collar on a certain venue where I haven't seen the teams I just didn't catch a break in your start scratching your trying to deal with the avalanche of information and still prepare to tell these great stories of March and be the conduit between the stories that are being created over the course of the tournament in the fans that whole that thirst for them that to me is what really stands out about the big dance it's the fact that there are athletes that you may have not heard of before the tournament right and they become household names by the end of the three weeks mmhm I need go with us here after our CBS sports radio as my niece put that this is my older niece who just last spring graduated from the university of Virginia well I guess the who's got to be champions for another you think yeah dear that's one way to think about your right yeah she's cute I can't have it yeah they have a different way of looking at things so before I let you go the NFL just added two more playoff teams and we found out that CBS will be getting one of those playoff games in twenty twenty one but sold Nickelodeon so I'm I'm wondering I mean if you had your choice yeah I I know that I love CVS what would you like to do it Nickelodeon tried to appeal to pre teens with your NFL broadcast emir as you may know I'm very particular about my hair it seems a lot to me and the idea of getting slimed during an NFL playoff game does not sound particularly enjoys you know me I'll take one for the team if that's the way it's going to be that's the way it's gonna be so good well it's great to hear your voice and and to laugh it it actually makes this Wednesday so much better so I can be safe I'm glad you're together with all of your family thank you so much for a few minutes on the show it's always great talking to you and just everybody out there please station and do your part be the best version of yourself that you can be during these times and the next time you would I speak hopefully we're talking about the actual games and the competition in the match ups and all the fun that we have in those conversations good to hear from I. N. ends good to laugh with him and Sarah said that really intriguing stories he always tells that he's really got his finger in you know in in in a piece of every pie at the beginning of that conversation we got his unique perspective on where he was when the NBA shut down he was actually in an arena when the whole thing happened getting ready to call a game with no fan so I'd love for you to go back and and listen to the earlier portion of that conversation also he's a part of the nets crew or the nets traveling party and in four of the nets were initially diagnosed with COPD nineteen now all four of them are fine and they've all been cleared but he had contact with Kevin Durant before Durant tested positive and you know a couple of times during an interview and a handshake and that he mentioned that it was pretty disconcerting when the news broke that it was your rant and three others on the nets roster who had tested positive for the virus and so his stories are yeah there they're interesting and ends at the same time as the kind of the scary element to it a bit the the fact that we can laugh and that and then he can see the silver lining I think that's encouraged me about not just I am but the other guests we've spoken to this week if you miss my conversation with Hofstra men's basketball coach Joe metallic that was also really good he tried to encourage me to use zoom except he has a really bad joke about zoom so you're gonna have to check it out order by jazz after hours A. B. lords dot com okay so you're sending your final four upsets okay so every night during the show every morning during the show this week we've done your final four category we had breakfast foods we did zoo animals very popular at woke up Wednesday they're a lot more zoo animals I'd forgotten all about meerkats near CAD through says been tastic to see so many of you didn't have a their own show on the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet or something like that it was that it became very popular for red pandas and other one flamingos got mentioned there was even a pair it in their eyes so I I enjoyed hearing all about the zoo animals so we thought we were try a sports category but this was proved to be much more difficult than what to even I anticipate it I would think but on Twitter Chuck says the two thousand seven Fiesta Bowl Boise state over Oklahoma the statue of liberty play oh my gosh that was a great upset he also mentioned ninety eighty the miracle on ice with the U. S. Olympic hockey team which is the semi finals not actually the gold medal game North Carolina state over Houston NC double a tournament we've determined that was eighty three and then the New York Giants over the undefeated patriots in the Super Bowl also a very popular answer let's see James miracle on ice the Miami miracle first time I've heard that no it's interesting because up that's a defined a little differently when you're talking about pro sports but the fact that Miami had their whole hook and ladder up the field crazy play either no time on the clock and and yet somehow they got that ball the we have the feel that what that was pretty crazy to end the game it was probably the highlight and by highlight I just mean that the craziest highlights the most notable highlight of the two thousand eighteen season with eighteen right gosh they all blend together Douglas over ties to that he says the two thousand one Diamondbacks over at the New York Yankees David Luiz Gonzalez was that the name that would be correct the name that forever lives in your own personal information he hated that moment is it's right up there with the for red Sox series read very bad for me I can still feel Louise Gonzalez leaping after that ball went over the head of it was the second baseman or what all right up the middle but it was it was all bad you know it's just sports but yes those are the ones that stick with of a like a tease David this Yankees loyalty they have a you have had more than enough of a share of their amazing moments at the top of the world so it's okay to tease them a little bit let's see wreck on Facebook the eighty three raiders over the Redskins raiders were fourteen point dogs the number to the blue jackets sweeping taper fade out that's an upset I'm it's it's four games though that's the only part that makes me nervous Appalachian state over Michigan and the number forty for the wild card giants over the eighteen patriot so yeah that's another good win that Super Bowl is probably one of the greatest of all time so keep those coming your final four upset on Twitter on Facebook we've got one show left tonight looking forward you will wrap up final four week have a great Thursday it's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio geico presents again another voice mail from your roommate a man so I was in a rush to get to work and I left the back door open could you shut it I left it wide open well while you're there could you.

looking forward to the final four this weekend unfortunately we we don't have March madness this year it's a different kind of madness ed yeah instead of you got a lot of play by play announcers that are staying home but like the rest of us it's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio Brendan Galvin with a call from last year's what are the regional final on Westwood One it's after hours on CBS sports radio we had a chance to catch up with I am eagle on Wednesday and he normally juggles NBA with the nets on yes network as well as various NBA on TNT and college basketball responsibilities so for him it's a completely different and we covered a bunch of other topics including where he was when the NBA shut down which is really fascinating story but I want to pick up the conversation where I was asking about this idea that sports can provide some healing in twenty twenty and I wanted to know how that appealed to him as someone who works in the industry here are you I feel like it's absolutely true but I don't want to trivialize at any point what's happening in the world we do have to prioritize and the first thing that we have to focus in on is flattening this curve and doing everything individually in our power and that's all we can ask of people to help the cause then as maybe the numbers start to decrease and we can see light at the end of the tunnel then we can start talking about page send contingencies look no there are a lot of smart people out there working at the sports leagues and they understand the role that sports can play but the headline right now has less to do with when they're coming back if they're coming back and more to do with how are we dealing with this and maybe we can take that next step of actually to start talking about the return of the things that we love and things that do provide usually two people yeah I think there's been two schools of thought here and never would I say that something is inconsequential but sports have taken a backseat but there has been a reminder that it's a big part of our lives and it provides a lot to a lot of people forget about on the business end and how much it affects commerce but your day to day you know I think if you're a sports fan you often set up your weekly schedule based on offense knowing your favorite teams in action on a Tuesday night think about that day and what you're gonna do after work and how it factors into your data K. mood and when it's taken away from you there is a void there's no doubt about it so people always ask me this because I tell them October is my busiest month of the year but the spring March and early April or my second busiest you know stretches of the year if if if we're not in twenty twenty what does a typical week look like for you in March or maybe early April I in when you are zipping all over the place yeah I I've got to tell you in the it's it's one of those stretches of time that I always look forward to but I also know the challenge involved in that and I don't consider myself I'd like to write myself a letter every year and seal it and then open it up chest of the NCAA tournament is about to begin and all the letter which areas it's all gonna be OK field will hate that would actually be very appropriate right now with what's happening in the world and a reminder that a potentially it's all gonna be OK how it pertains to the NCAA tournament preparing for that event is so different than anything else that I do everything else that scheduled out I know who the next for playing on a given night I know that I'm working the Tennessee Titans Baltimore Ravens game on the schedule I can see if I can prepare for it I can chip away over the course of the days leading up to the event and feel like I've done everything in my power to prepare the way the NCAA tournament is set up you cannot speculate on who you're going to have and what city you're going to be and you don't find out until selection Sunday around eight o'clock eight thirty at night you get a phone call and I've looked at all the venues I've looked at all the matchups and in my own head I've determined oh boy Providence would be perfect for me because I've seen five of the eight teams at all prepared and I'll get a head start and then you'll get the phone call and it's like it's slow motion I am Hey you're going to she tools all often times it's happened in my twenty two years of doing tournament I'll take the collar on a certain venue where I haven't seen the teams I just didn't catch a break in your store scratching you're trying to deal with the avalanche of information and still prepare detailed these great stories of March and be the conduit between the stories that are being created over the course of the tournament in the fans that whole that thirst for them that to me is what really stands out about the big dance it's the fact that there are athletes that you may have not heard of before the tournament right and they become household names by the end of the three weeks mmhm I need go with us here after our CBS sports radio as my niece put that this is my older niece who just last spring graduated from the university of Virginia well I guess the who's get to be champions for another year thank yeah dear that's one way to think of it you're right yeah she's cute I can't have it yeah they have a different way of looking at things so before I let you go the NFL just added two more playoff teams and we found out that CBS will be getting one of those playoff games in twenty twenty one but sold Nickelodeon so I'm I'm wondering I mean if you had your choice yeah I I know that I love CVS what would you like to do it Nickelodeon tried to appeal to pre teens with your NFL broadcast emir as you may know I'm very particular about my hair it seems a lot to me and the idea of getting slimed during an NFL playoff game does not sound particularly enjoy this you know me I'll take one for the team effects the way it's going to be that's the way it's gonna be so good well it's great to hear your voice and and to laugh it it actually makes this Wednesday so much better so I can be safe I'm glad you're together with all of your family thank you so much for a few minutes on the show it's always great talking to you and just everybody out there please okay and do your part be the best version of yourself that you can be during these times and the next time you would I speak hopefully we're talking about the actual games and the competition in the match ups and all the fun that we have in those conversations good to hear from I. N. ends good to laugh with him and saw to it that really intriguing stories he always tells them he's really got his finger in you know in in in a piece of every pie at the beginning of that conversation we got his unique perspective on where he was when the NBA shut down he was actually in an arena when the whole thing happened getting ready to call a game with no fan so I'd love for you to go back and and listen to the earlier portion of that conversation also he's a part of the nets crew or the nets traveling party and and four of the nets were initially diagnosed with COPD nineteen now all four of them are fine and they've all been cleared but he had contact with Kevin Durant before Durant tested positive and you know a couple of times during an interview and a handshake and that he mentioned that it was pretty disconcerting when the news broke that it was Duran and three others on the nets roster who had tested positive for the virus and so his stories are yeah there they're interesting and ends at the same time as the kind of the scary element to it a bit the the fact that we can laugh and that and then he can see the silver lining I think that's encouraged me about not just I am but the other guys we've spoken to this week if you miss my conversation with Hofstra men's basketball coach Joe metallic that was also really good he tried to encourage me to use zero of except he has a really bad joke about zoom so you're gonna have to check it out Autobot jazz after hours AB lords dot com okay so you're sending.

"Well before we talk more about the kind of what's happening right now in the sports world I just wanted to say you know your son image of the clippers it's been so cool to hear your son his first year of play by play as a proud Papa I can only imagine what that's been like for you and your family all my gosh it it's been awesome Amy is it really has to know attended Syracuse University like I did like my wife did it like I did like or in strong as we know and this was a tremendous opportunity and that he found himself in and has really enjoyed every step of that the team is first class obviously they were one of the teams that you would think of when you started considering who could win the NBA title this year and the home is of course that the NBA cannon will resume play at some point but all that is up in the air but it's not going to take away from his first year experience and it's really it's been a blast awesome yeah it's kind of fun to have two eagles now in the NBA community I've ever heard well mostly rob Manfred I think because baseball is the sport that you know it's kind of facing an entire season here where they make it making maybe condense it and and tweak it the way that they want but the commissioners talked about how he believes baseball and sports will be a part of are returning to normal fee it's a weird word to use right now but returning to pre virus normals in the United States of America and even in sports in a lot of for a long time at this how does that idea appealed to you that sports could be part of our healing this year yeah I I feel like it's absolutely true but I don't want to trivialize at any point what's happening in the world we do have to prioritize and the first thing that we have to focus in on is flattening this the fun that we have in those conversations maybe Nickelodeon maybe you were talking about someone getting slimed on Nickelodeon that might be the point at which you know that it's safe to come out it's safe to resume life as we knew it when we're talking about climbing on Nickelodeon I had never considered that until he said it but you want to appeal to pre teens and let them know that football is so much fun will sure let's find some people whether it's players whether it's coaches forget the Gatorade bath we're gonna slide view instead it's really good to talk to I any goals if the if it was earlier on Wednesday afternoon but when I got done talking to I've I feel uplifted I I've smiled and I laughed and and none of it was affected all of it was genuine and and he certainly is that so it's good to have him and a little bit later on the show I get a lesson in zoom or at least some encouragement in zero Maya from NC double a men's basketball coach who is now using zoom instead of "This time of the year I am eagle is usually bouncing around from game to game sport to sport site but like a lot of us the routine and and the normal it's completely flipped upside down in March was great to catch up with him on Wednesday great storyteller a booming voice lots of butter but I started out by asking him how he had his family are doing right now during these uncertain and surreal time if all right Sir certainly been different this is normally the time of year where I am the busiest that I possibly could be over the course of my schedule where NCAA tournament in the NBA running around so going from one hundred twenty miles per hour zero miles per hour has since been adjustment but the goal right now is to the stay safe and to stay secluded and hopefully make this a distant memory thank everybody on my end is is doing really well you were part of for your in the arena for what would have been one of the last NBA games on that night when it ended up getting canceled I and what was that experience like to be in the bay area as the games are literally getting called off right before they're supposed to go on the court yeah just to paint the picture I had done a warriors clippers game on Tuesday night for T. and T. with Stan van Gundy and you could tell that night that there was trepidation and hesitancy just from security guards and ushers and team personnel something was developing out on the west coast and the rhetoric was leading towards a family scheme on Thursday so if you nights from that initial game I did the nets were set to play the warriors I remained in San Francisco on Wednesday waited for the next to get into town Wednesday night and was on the phone with my producer Frank the grades from the yes network the entire day every half hour we were checking in with one another just talking about the logistics of doing the broadcast with no fans in attendance that night the Wednesday night is when the president spoke to the nation things shifted very quickly and then about an hour and twenty minutes later that's when it came to a head with Rudy killed there the Utah Jazz and eventually the suspension of games in the NBA so I jumped on a red eye flight that night I came back to the east coast at that point my family was scattered around so my priority was focusing on getting them home safe and sound and then eventually we saw the very jarring domino effect of conference tournaments being canceled the NCAA tournament being canceled and the reality that this was going to have a far reaching effect not just on the sports world life as we know it since then the interestingly enough it took a maybe a week and a half or so we did find out about a dozen players have tested positive the ones that we know of for covert nineteen that included four nets and Kevin Durant was the only one who at least that I've seen who revealed his name but to hear that and to know that you were you know crossed paths with a lot of these players knew what what is that a motion like just knowing people you work with and and you see on a regular basis if I've got the virus yeah we we have a a group texts among my coworkers at yes that cover the nats and as you can imagine when the news was announced that there was a chain reaction making sure everybody was feeling okay none of us were tested we were not in that group so we're really at that point was self quarantining and just constantly checking to make sure that there were no symptoms and checking up on one another that group mentality that family mentality that we have but yeah your mind goes places at that point you start thinking about who you came in contact with you when you came in contact with them as I mentioned I took a red eye flight that night from San Francisco that was not with the nets on their charter but I was separate and that obviously was the first thing that came to mind but there were people in that group text that did fly with the team the next day I personally have not been traveling that much with the nets over about a three week period because I was bouncing around from event to event doing college basketball games so often flying on my own to meet the nets on the road but not necessarily travelling with the team but I had been in contact with Kevin Durant who joined us courts are Richard Jefferson and I work for the next Memphis Grizzlies game early March and it was March fourth and Kevin was our guest so we came over courts signed we shook hands we did the interview at the end of the interview we shook hands again and obviously you start thinking about those moments and what the cause and effect would be I have to applaud Kevin for coming out everybody's got to handle it in the way that they feel is appropriate but I can tell that Katie coming out of changing the stigma which is really a big part of this right now nobody should feel badly that they've contracted Dennis and if anything it's helpful and bringing home the point that we all have to be so careful when it does become a public issue and I thought at that moment at that time the doctor Kevin Durant came out and it knowledge that it opens the more eyes around the country just how real this is the voice of iron eagle one you recognize well does NFL college hoops nets basketball NBA and right now supposed to be one of the busiest times of the year it's after hours with Amy Lawrence on CBS sports radio instead I'd you are stuck with me well before we talk more about the kind of what's happening right now in the sports "Growth of flu like Robert the jazz club laughter flute well I was clearly we need to have a meeting about the rejoin music I don't know I like to be I just kind of funny yet like the fluids like the the most important thing in that song is kind of cool I like it the card the show since its inception back in two thousand fourteen went through periods where we would have like four Catholic featured artists or something I did show like teams like we just go night and right now we have like heavy metal night we have wrapped night and we have like mod that being in plain P. we would end up with the aggressive flute feel like that we we really are an ever evolving show here on ESPN written that's why we're the crown jewel of weekend programming after Daria mail in radio that's not true if you were saying Sir I'm sorry the aggressive the aggressive flute so you are saying I'm sorry Sir go head I got side tracked by the flute I think what I'm saying is is that you know on paper you should all be pretty competitive games I would say Titans ravens is probably the one out liar were you say all right well Baltimore should probably have no issue here with Tennessee if everything is equal first game Vikings of forty Niners on paper looks very competitive Texans cheap yes Patrick my homes is Patrick homes and the chiefs are home but they don't have the greatest playoff history under Andy Reid they do have some injuries to key guys so we will see it in see locks Packers who knows what to make of this game I think the Packers are all that great but the Seahawks are so banged up Jonathan on their offense of line in the backfield it's going to snow ten inches overnight in Green Bay to me that's a toss up because I don't think again the Packers are necessarily a great to see what I can certainly see them being good enough to get past this game and get to the NFC championship game the following week that you so Seattle had some injuries in eagle say hold my beer these are what injury they had a thon in Seattle the same thing this is the story for this game use canned Seattle going to Green Bay despite the weather conditions and finally get a win in the environment in a situation like this there one three in the spots when they are in the playoffs in the end this is being on the road I just think the defense has to be able to come out the Seahawks and win this game at the when it the way the wind one against the eagles last week I think there's going to be something like seventeen and nine or something like that but from Green Bay standpoint look we know the story line because we talk about the summer the floor in there are Rogers with there be a disconnect Rogers told Chris Simms in an interview way early in the spring into the summer that he wasn't sure metal floor will allow him to audible and be himself well Rogers has been good not great it's been good enough for their with the Packers get to this point in time the end and I've heard little bit follow my I. football so there was such an overblown story was overblown at the quarterback says it Hey there Rogers said that he was concerned about the his ability to do what he does best and that's to be able to extend plays an audible and the things that I actually have worked out well now would Rogers on the floor none the less that is a factor but it's what you talked about earlier my friend you talk about the smiths defensively trying to get after Russell Wilson that is going to be interesting to watch as well can the Seahawks score in abundance against sig could Packer defense right especially if they're one dimensional can't run and then sit there you submit them Preston Smith in their ears back and is great is Russell Wilson is that still a lot to ask for him to overcome basically by himself we really spent a good chunk of the show today not only getting our hockey updates from Ryan from spruce Grove and also cattle winters workplace I would get a lot previewing the Niners Viking Titans ravens we had Courtney Cronan we had Nick Wagoner we had Buck rising and we had she was in Hensley here in case you missed it are all our experts picks for today's games the Minnesota Vikings San Francisco forty Niners I think the Vikings unless I take my final score was twenty eight twenty five because the final four games of the end of December for the forty Niners came down there decided in the last ten seconds of those were to fight on the last play light intensity to really close game maybe not a high scoring if you'd think with these types of offences was your twenty point is still a lot but I think it comes down to that final play potentially even a game winning field goal I get Minnesota the X. here just because the kind of writing from momentum right now if you'd have to keep playing but you know there's something about this team right now that they might be kind of feel the catching heat at the right time I guess maybe from that momentum and there are riding high into the game coming off that when I take the Niners by four I think it's going to be a close game I I just there's a few things that I think works it to their advantage first of all I think they're going to be as healthy as they've been in a long time all by all indications are gonna have D. for Kwan out across the car back so a key starter at all levels of the defense is going to be available at least in some capacity today that they haven't had worked about halfway through the season ended and they have a chance to get back to kind of that more dominant defect that they were earlier this year Tennessee Titans Baltimore Ravens straight up I don't I can't see how they do it again I mean I was I was really impressed with them and the work regardless of how did I doubt I will continue to be impressed with what with what they have done this season but this is a much different animal this is something that nobody has been able to do to this point the thing that does bode well for them is that Lamar Jackson when he gets in these big games are always a much different player than in college or last year in the wild card round against Chargers what is forced to play hero ball that's when it starts to turn the ball over and that might be their only chance I thought I'd take it but I've taken the placenta right up that I really do feel like this if you don't like yeah on a certain kind of of mission at this point and I don't see them lily having any kind of problems today I got the chance to turn the tide unless there's a penalty is less of turnovers other than that I think fifteen are on track and it seems like they've been on a collision course with the kids the cheese for a while I think that if you change your name everybody wants to see the Niners Courtney's going with Minnesota Wagoner with San Francisco but both park and Jamieson think the ravens over the Titans tonight not surprised by the ravens get the nod of the Titans and if you look at most of the predictions on NBC which is carrying the first game today Jonathan almost overwhelmingly in favor of San Francisco the home team as opposed to the succeeded Minnesota Vikings go near the way I love Minnesota plus seven then this one act right you know boke rustling by the way book he doesn't think that other times you want but you aren't on the number of the home I like sleeping so it's gonna be closer than the than the ten that's a big number in the playoffs isn't it ten that is huge number double digits you know what the season is brought we've seen some numbers and it's not like you and I are gamblers but will you can't help but when you look at the previews and you see these things Jeff we've seen some stuff that's over twenty five twenty six I believe was that the dolphins earlier this year we've seen from those we haven't seen since the nineteen seventies as far as spreads are concerned yes I mean look I I understand why the number is what it is when you look at the ravens the year they've had but it would make me a little its Jeter to throw that money down on Baltimore but I think again the consensus is straight up ravens are likely to win this game and we'll see within the Vikings and the foreigners that game's about to kick off we'll keep you updated there this is Dickerson hood it's ESPN radio ESPN for the new sports streaming service powered by
