They are complaining, saying that that the church van was smelling like weed when they got on there. Excuse me. They say the turn. It's van was smelling like weed when they got on there, and you are the person that was driving. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, not not not demanded that I'm driving. I don't know. I don't know. Smoke weed in over there. You, You smoke weed? I don't smoke weed at me, not Karin. I mean, I had before, but I don't smoke weed now, and I would smoke weed before picking people up to go to No, no. First. Now what? What were you created from? Who told you this? Well, all I know is what was coming down the pipeline. Is they saying that the couple of the members came complaints in the SEC? Not just happened last week about this, Piper. I wanna know what like line is because just last week they came in me talking about that I was using the van to go places that I want to go to on my personal time. Now. Don't do that. But I've been driving his van and the point to try to change my life and where I come from So this was something that I want to volunteer. Even though I'm getting paid to give my time to do this for the church, And now this is like the second instance we're young and came at me on some stuff about like I'm trying to do something with this van. Now. Why would I disrespect the church van by smoking, weeding and then letting we stay in that so other people can smell it. Okay, So then you tell you what we're gonna do. We're gonna go out here to the church van to say we're gonna go out here today and opening up Now, if we see any freeze anything around the driver's seat, then then then we're gonna We're gonna definitely, uh, point open the van up and I was raised in the church, man. My mama, go to that church, my grandma. She go to that church. You know the reason we give it all that that's hurt. And you think I'm a mess up? They named by driving around in a van full of everything, People. Smoke isn't what you want. Do you want to do it like we did? Brother Dan. I don't know what they smell like weed, man. He's been fined fifty thousand dollars for violating the nba anti-tampering policy the finest in response to a to a december twentieth tweet about the houston rockets superstar. James harden obviously gio more used to be there. The tweet was deleted several minutes later. It was an inadvertent post from an automated app. Now more was hired by the seventy sixers less than two weeks after resigning as the rockets manager. And obviously he. In case you have noticed minimalism and the tidying-up movement are having a moment less is more has gone mainstream. Is Not that the idea of living with less in the realization of the attendant benefits is a newly discovered concept thousands of years ago. Greek. STOIC philosopher epic Titas came to the conclusion that quote wealth consists not in having great possessions but in having few wants and quote. Is just at today's culture or at least some meaningful corner of it is finally catching on. A journey toward a more minimal life. Our own journey toward a more minimal lifestyle has been marked by fits and starts for years ago we began the shift toward a life motivated less by cumulation and consumption in more by chasing meaning and purpose. We committed to living more minimally because we knew or at least thought that a life with less could lead to more. We I learned about the concept of minimalism. We were intrigued daddy of shedding possessions and living lighter appealed to us. So we started boxing up belongings and dropping them off at charitable thrift stores or placing them at the curve for trash pickup. But after a weekend of shedding, we find ourselves back where we started with a few less things but without making much of a dent in our desire for broader change. Will let us to transformational change and ultimately greater happiness was taking a step back and try to understand the larger purpose and vision we have for our lives. We focused on the end we had in mind and concluded it could be achieved. Do the means of minimizing. minimalism as a means to an end. Consumption requires a trade off and its greatest cost is time the cost of a new coat or pair of shoes isn't measured only dollars and cents busy takes time and effort to acquire those dollars and cents Kazumi Social Media Means giving up moments that could be spent doing something more meaningful. Organizing and reorganizing mounds of stuff is one of the ability to apply mental and physical energy to more productive pursuits. As one of the original minimalist writers. Henry David. Thoreau once. wrote quote. The. Cost of a thing is the amount of what I will call life, which is required to be exchanged for it immediately or in the long run and quote. In other words, those things that are dominating our time and attention are stifling. The one thing we can never replace which is life. All of this is to say that it's easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of minimalism movement and missed the bigger picture, and in this case, the big picture is using minimalism as a means to an end to a more fulfilling intentional and purposeful life rather than treating it as an end in itself. In my personal experience I've found that merely focusing on the tactic of minimalism without a larger purpose in mind makes it hard to stick with it. Chooses Calorie counting diets measured only by the restriction of calories rarely work minimalism quests marked only by the dispossession of objects are hard to sustain. Is Difficult to stay motivated to stick with the means without an end in mind that lights you up inside. Having a larger purpose is what helps you to persevere through challenges and minimizing one's lifestyle in the face of societal pressures to do otherwise certainly qualifies as a challenge. By no means are we minimalists in the purest sense? We still have too much stuff get caught up in up with the Joneses and succumb to temptation despite knowing better. Of, the last several years with a more clearly defined mission in mind every time we have fallen down, we've been able to get up and get back on track happier and ready for what's next. For us being more minimal minded allows us to elevate and prioritize experiences over things. Having less stuff in our home enables us to spend more time outside in nature our minds are less encumbered. So we have more capacity to pursue creative endeavors that while not always financially remunerative bring us great contentment that said is not always easy because the siren song of more is addictive. If you're not careful more stuff more commitments and more mental clutter can easily see back in. If you're trying to focus on less, there's laws of cultural messaging that will suggest to you that your priorities are misplaced and you're missing out on the false promises of largesse. Having, Dude some of the tug and pull of more and less we firmly determined that yes. Bless is more worded by the knowledge born of experienced at the path of a filament lies doing the hard things. With a purpose in mind you can learn to love the process of minimalism even if it's difficult at times. As FYODOR Dostoevsky once wrote quote the mystery of Human Existence lies not just staying alive, but in finding something to live for and MINIMALISM is not a magical cure. All an organized sock drawer doesn't scale beyond fleeting satisfaction of those who have a deeper meaning mind for their lives and want to pursue a mission in life that is challenging and fulfilling falling the foundational principles of minimalism is beneficial first step toward finding lice purpose. "Well, it's no surprise that depression and anxiety are up to record levels during this pandemic what can you do to deal with this? Well, here to help is David Burns MD adjunct clinical professor. Emeritus of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at Stanford University School of Medicine, his weekly feeling good cast by therapists and the general public with tips overcome depression, anxiety, relationship conflicts, habits, and addiction. He's got a new book out called Feeling Great. The Revolutionary New Treatment for depression anxiety David. Welcome to the show. Thanks Perry well, this is a huge issue for us and I know give them before this happened in the mid nineties I suffered from huge depression anxiety. So I'm very familiar what's going on why is it peaking so much more now during the pandemic Well. I don't think I can answer that question but it is a fact that it is it is peaky and I've done research myself on the. Incidence and severity of depression than men and women. Before the pandemic and since the pandemic and certainly. Doubled in and women everything had has pretty much depression, anxiety anger and hopelessness. And in man anger has has doubled but I guess the reason we got upset at anytime is because of our thoughts and that idea goes back a couple thousand years to the Greek philosopher epoch. Titas who said. People are disturbed not by things or events, but by our thoughts about them. And so when people are depressed there, you're giving yourself negative messages when when you're anxious like I'm a loser be depressed forever. And those thoughts are really why you you're depressed your your thoughts in the here and now create all of your emotions. And the cool thing is. When you change the way, you think you can change the way you feel. You in the Book David Vet. Discovered that depression anxiety says something really good. Great about you and your core values what are those? Well. That's that's one of the new new discoveries and feeling great that has led to the ability of all Tra rapid recovery from depression and anxiety and the old days I would say up until now most therapists think that the people with depression and anxiety get stuck in them be for for negative reasons like you want to feel sorry for yourself or you you watch secondary gain, you get attention from people and those ideas are are really kind of put downs and and hurtful, and they're generally not even true. We've discovered is that Depression anxiety result from what's beautiful about you your core values, for example, one of the. People that I discussed in the book was a woman named Karen who had been depressed for nine years because our daughter got shot in the face by some neighborhood boys. Who Snuck up on her with a high. pellet rifle and it bullet. Pellet whatever it was hit or her her teeth of one of her tooth's exploded and get a lot of damage to her mouth and face and she ran indoor. She was twelve years old. She was screaming and this led to nine years of surgeries and treatment for her daughter. The treatments for PTSD was not successful and when Karen came to me, she'd been struggling for. You know all that time with severe depression anxiety guilt shame hopelessness telling herself I'm a bad mother. It's my fault. I never should have. Let her go out to play that that night things of that nature and what and before I try to help anyone crushed thoughts I save what are these thoughts and feelings show about you that's that's positive. An awesome. And that's the opposite of the way psychiatry and psychology. Work and but it's pretty obvious. You know she's very Karen is very self critical and that shows she has high standards. And her high standards have caused her to accomplish a great deal for herself. She got a PhD she has She's a clinical psychologist as a tremendous practice. She's done a tremendous amount. For her daughter, for example. In addition her feelings of guilt and shame and Italian yourself I'm a bad mother actually shows that she's a good mother, a loving mother and she's done everything she can to to help her daughter and continues. Right up to the day when when? I, what I treated her Her anxiety is a great thing because the last time she let her guard down and said, it's okay to go out and play her daughter had a horrible traumatic event and so her intense anxiety is an expression of her love for her daughter and to protect her daughter she's like a mama bear protecting her cubs. And then her her sadness and depression is also an expression of of for love. I said Karen if there was a magic button here, you press at all your depression and anxiety instantly vanish. And you'll be euphoric would would you press that button? She says Oh. Absolutely everyone says that everyone who's suppressing they wanNA press about then feel happy but when you think about it I said so I take that you wanna feel happy and euphoric to be. All. Your daughter is suffering incredibly. Is that correct? She said Oh no. No, that sounds horrible. And so you. So you see her her depression isn't a bad thing to get rid of it. It's a good thing. And together we made a list of twenty five things that her. Negative feelings and her negative thoughts showed about her that was really beautiful and they were obvious powerful things like her anger. What is that show about her well arrangers healthy. The those boys parents never should've let them go playing with neighborhood kids with a loaded rifle. So is this why we see so many very successful and creative people in the world suffer from depression anxiety. I don't think I know the answer to that question and I'm not even sure that's true I know that's a kind of a myth that people people. Do like to talk along those lines and certainly true that a lot of famous if two people have struggled with depression, a lot of people who aren't gifted. In that way have struggled with depression to what I'm referring to this a little different not that Karen has some or people who are depressed have some special. Aptitude that just that their feelings are the expression of what's beautiful about them they it's not due to mechanical imbalance in the brain or some mental disorder but here's the bottom line once she saw this and I said maybe Karen we don't want to press that magic button which style your emotions down to a lower level where you feel better. But you could still keep all these these beautiful qualities of high standards and love for your daughter and humility was another. Quality that she had that was you could see in her depression herself criticisms and she said Yeah let's do that. So I said how depressed would you WANNA BE BETWEEN Today and for the last nine years, you've been hundred out of one hundred. How much depression would you need? itchy. So ten percent is enough. And I said, well, can I show you on twenty? She started laughing said no tennis plenty and she gave numbers to dial down her shame or guilt or anxiety or rage to like five. Zero ten in that range, and now her resistance has disappeared and then I was able to help her crush her negative thoughts which were distorted like I never should have let her go out and play. Well, you'd have to be a fortune teller to know that she's being so unfair to herself but once that resistance disappears and she and her shame disappears and she sees that are negative. Feelings are beautiful positive something to be proud of then it's paradoxically easy for her to smash those thoughts and recover, and that's why I wrote feeling great because the. When I work with people now, they generally recover in just one session. It has to be ninety minutes session like with care to our session to to go through the various steps but ninety percent of the time people recovering now in one session, and this is revolutionary in new, and the reason I'm writing feeling great is because the general public can use these techniques whether or not. You're in therapy to vastly accelerate your your recovery and it's a very positive it's a realistic but but but positive message and I think it's a major breakthrough in psychotherapy.

Area to attend swarthmore college and graduated with a degree in history and literature in nineteen forty six. After graduation but thiede decided to go by Liz Sutherland in an attempt to better fit in with elites in the arts and Publishing World of New York City? She worked as a translator at the United Nations before moving into research and administration. PETITA studied European and US colonies in Africa and the Pacific Ocean working to shed light on conditions in places that didn't have self sovereignty. She, then worked at the Museum of modern. The center used arts and media to educate visitors about the culture and struggles at the Chicano community. During her tenure there Petita also wrote another book. This one called five hundred years of Chicano history.
