And so like it's good that he's on a health kick because now everyone's like eating eating well and stuff and exercise. Are you conscious of it. Are you still tracking track. Every was when they said you're having to count someone's going to be able to tell that I'm not tracking that's took some time but I just know it's there for me. I go in and out like I know it's there when I need it. But not not tracking right the second and all my exercise on finding adding now like exercise used to be about like I wanNA cute or whatever. Now it's like I took like five or six years ago. I took a exercise class at a gym and they were like okay. Everyone I went to get down here. We need to be able to get up off the floor ladies and I was like that's where it's at. I need to be able to get off. Yeah and now I think called Turkish ups. She's talking her friends. Yeah how do you protect them from. What's so terrible out there? I think the kids growing up like in schools have rules about it. Yeah well my little one. It does not have a phone and what is he as you think you should have a phone. Well I think it depends on the kid. My older kid was like twelve and that was okay. My younger one. I I WANNA say thirty eight. She's trouble she's trouble. But I think kit kids doc young. They're like we know where they get the whole thing like it's forever it's for everyone it's for because that's what I think. My generation struggles the most with going on like I said that online and not now anyone can see that and that's forever we don't get that not at all. No Uh speaking extemporaneously is like the most dangerous thing a person can do in two thousand twenty s is like talk without a script because you get in trouble. Ah Somebody so. Let's talk about one of the things that amazed me one of the Times. I think I was going to interview. You're in the middle of literally creating. You're going to do for the first time that night the Sarah Palin routine routine and there was something going on with your daughter it was. Yeah it was. I spent what was probably the apex probably the craziest craziest day of a crazy time in my life. When we made the show thirty rock we worked sixty seventy hours? A week and oprah had very very kindly agreed to be on the shows going to shoot film all day on Saturday and also that it had come to pass the days before that that that Saturday night I was going to go play Sarah Palin the first time for the first time and and then the next day was my daughter's third birthday party and I was like absolutely I'm going to make the cake. Everybody here's one thing. If you're young mom I will tell you. They literally don't remember all the things the birthday parties they don't remember her. And aw I was GONNA say. Don't even start to sit Louis about six or seven. You start to remove all that stuff. You're doing to win three and yeah you're doing it for yourself. Yeah you're doing it for yourself so it doesn't matter how good the cake is. It doesn't matter if you made the cake it's fine so you you didn't even seem to be nervous that I I that you were doing that that first night where you really nervous it. I think I weirdly was not. I was probably more nervous that you were there and we needed to get. It did have an episode earlier in the morning that you were there where I started laughing uncontrollably and I had to shoot one little thing without you and I started laughing uncontrollably at a very stupid joke where I was supposed to be asleep on the guy next to me in the plane and then I get woken up on my sleep. I say no grandma. No and we never know why I started the giggles. And they were like couldn't couldn't stop and they were like listen Oprah's coming in like an hour you've got to put together a in the dressing room and I was looking at Tate News tapes of Sarah Palin China sound assist sound like her and Oprah said to me like I'm concerned for you like this might be too much and I was like when Oprah Winfrey tells you might be too much sit down sit down and I in hindsight now that that time in my life is over where it was like. We can do everything we can go do the show and then I'll be. I can remember of like a feeling that now I know was just cortisol. Just spiking like a tight chest front and back and Cortisol because that show was thirty rock was a lot of challenging people challenging circumstances and I think that there were days where I'm like I feel it eating my heart cortisol. Cortisol is burning away my heart and so I don't feel that anymore. I have other shows now. I'm not in them and I feel feel that that's good. You know what I love about you. Is that first of all did you. You didn't know particularly that first day that the Sarah Palin Gig. I think that that thing was gonNA turn into a thing and the thing and the thing did at night. All I knew was people thought I look like her. I don't even work there anymore. And I don't think people realize that that and I've joked and said that I felt like it was my a prayer for Owen. meany moment that was like everything in my life had been leading up to me to be able to do that and one thing I was thinking about that and about balance in general and the reason why I wasn't that scared was I think because other parts of my life were and balance I felt like it goes terribly. I'll just go home and my family's there that's right you know. I was able to have perspective of like doc I will say that is the reason why gale and I and if you were gonNA steelers the best friend why she is the best friend because she always actually really loved her life and so never wanted any parts of mind. You can only have friends who are truly your friends who are not jealous of you. Who Don't want what you have? who only what they have? And they're happy for what you have and that's why I have. I also would be remiss if I didn't mention my best. A friend from home growing up as friend Marlin Kimball who is very much that she's a teacher in Pennsylvania and she we celebrate each other and again I never feel like yeah. She's like well. I wish all this weekend I might have blown it. I probably should have brought it this week. Probably should've brought you. Yeah Yeah Yeah So. Do you have lots of girlfriends. 'cause you have the Saturday night live group that you talked to all the live friends who now now. That's old friends. That's over many years ago. I have my old hometown. Summer Theater friends have all my work friends. My friend easy I used to work with flew in from La. Because not because of me. But Yet yes I wanted to ask. First of all you are going to be hosting being the Golden Globes aiming are GonNa go by going back next year. So here's what I'll be tracking next December. Ember I'll be tracking those points. Yes back to track district for the big event. Do you think I think as a comedian that there are some jokes. Some things that shouldn't be joked about. Is there anything off limits..

"Oh look at you. Yeah you left your Parker the back doc you look at the park on the back to was the coal little shocking. I mean I walked out of the hotel this morning and I went. Hey I did the same thing I did the same thing and I lived in Chicago all those years five years but you lose your tolerance. The difference is the differences to that. When I was in Chicago I literally went from garage to garage? I worked fourteen hour days. I went unheeded aggressions actually anyway. We're welcoming you here thank you. I'm so happy to be here so I had some fun yesterday because we both Love Minneapolis for the same reason. We both love ourselves some Mary. Tyler Moore we do we do so we had to go to the statue with our. It was checking the realness berets where Ghana after. Aw that love that. Why did she mean so much to you? I mean you know I think only in hindsight site to do I appreciate what a new kind of show that was was was on. It came on the year I was born right. So I'm born in nineteen seventy. It came on there and so that seeing that representation of a woman working a show about her at work and her work friends and all that stuff that was given for me a and I think that definitely influenced me of what I thought. Grown up life was right. We all wanted that apartment. I drove by the House. It's so pretty there yet. They're the exterior of the house. Somebody's house you should probably knock on the door. I didn't but yeah and just everything about it you know just like I definitely obviously from very young myself that I'm gonNA live in. I'm going to work on. I live in a big city. Those were the things I dreamed about and large part because of that show. I wanted a department like that. I even had oh near my refrigerator. Shed an asthma. Yes yeah also her outfits were gorgeous. Missile was gorgeous. Yeah I started wearing vests because of Mary did. Yeah yeah the whole thing really important to have role models like that and then when I started in Chicago and people started writing asked me for money all the time I thought the WHO would I write to Mary. Did you right there in. Nineteen who who do. I feel that I feel close enough to on television that I would say right Mary. I'm having a problem. Could you help me with my rent. But here's the deal. I know that you have been a WW member not just as you are ww lifetime lifetime member. Aw thank you. I hope people what that means. I joined in New York in head lived in Chicago and really enjoy. Enjoy the food in Chicago and the big coats. Yes and then I got to New York and I. We took our coats off and I was like what happened but what happened here and I was sort of like. Oh I think it's time to sort of focus on this before I get out of hand. So why did you choose it been I think I Joseph and I went with my friend Paula. My friend hope. I don't think she'll mind that I said my friend Paula Pell. WHO's a hilarious comedian? We were both writer. You Know Paula Pell. Aw and we joined together. We were writers now and we used to go to meetings. When you talk about connection like it was old school days we would go the meeting over a jewelry store and eighty sixth and Broadway and the points were in books? I still have the books. You'd look up. You know like bananas. Anna's two points forever to me. I can't Abana can't be zero points. I can't and I ended up. We both succeeded on the program and I lost like thirty pounds that as mostly stayed often in many ways kind of changed my career a little bit now it was like Oh okay back now you can be on TV which is terrible but also like I said yes without it worked out and you went on not only that we were talking earlier and those of you who are on at note the best part about weight watchers actresses community. And there's now an APP called connect where people are posting all the time I was saying. It's the only place you can go and a post your picture of yourself at four hundred eighty seven pounds bikini people say way to go girl tastic. We're with as you I find going on. I actually do go on there. Sometimes people don't know he's going there yes and you don't know it's me. I may have given your salad a thumbs up. You don't know that I find it really rewarding like connect. Yes ma'am not by name but yes and your staff looked it up. And they're like we saw you. Three followers like Yep perfect perfect. It's exactly how I want it but but I don't do twitter and stuff like that because I feel like I can be so toxic and so sometimes on a day where I'm feeling very stressed or like I feel like the urge. I wish I could go on twitter twitter and say something back to somewhat or whatever I go on connect and I just spend like fifteen minutes saying positive things to people and I feel so like refilled and good as opposed to like leaving a mean thing on twitter. Yeah people get into some personal stuff on connect they do yes. I've seen people talking a blake. Do you can put videos on there now. Too and I want to hear my spent quite a while watching lady older lady talking but her we listen to us talking about like how her like. She's facing an illness. Her mother had was telling her like you've never going to do it and like community was rallying around her like it gets deep on. Yes but you don't go deep you just on their you. Cool whip on bananas guys that kind of stuff it also. I heard you posted a strawberry something. Yeah I'd take strawberries and bananas and I put frozen cool whip on it and a little little chocolate syrup and I tell myself it's banana split. Sometimes yeah yeah only seven points. SNL or they saw thirty rock. I think it's great eight a lot of times. I can see them coming. Sometimes I assume coming. I'm like you look exactly like me at twenty two and yes hello like it's always a lady looks glasses they look exactly but yeah. I think it's great. I think it's great and I have to say. I heard that you really like the poster that we shared announcing I guess line up with a closed for the tour till I tell one. I'm so sick of this. I would like this to be how we repopulate the world. Just we go to an island. These swimming in the Rock Starts Society over the poster. So I hear you're in a reboot stage now. Yes set me well. It was interesting because I was doing the workbook on my way here. And stuff on the plane and I'm forty nine. I'll be fifty next May. Are you feeling about that Thank you I feel okay. I feel fine. Yeah I'm trying to. I'm trying to make myself say I'm forty nine and not be like I'm fifty like because I'm not yet But you know it. It's only gonNA get better. I hope so I think so. It is it is and I will tell you the only number that actually gave me pause was sixty but when I turned fifty my dear friend. Angela was still alive. And Maya said to me. Babe the fifties or everything you've been meaning to be it's everything you I thought you might do. This is this is it. It's coming in. You're not even there yet. Yeah great okay. I agree it. It was because of the book is asking You your intention and stuff and I was like I feel like I m Emmett and age where all the things I ever thought.

"And so I said, I don't I can't because we want to do it your way what an extra one thing. He had spent his time doing crazy. And and Steve Levitan had taken a trip over to. Go to ten Downing Street. I guess and talk to Schumer to real Ricky. I don't know who is talking to see if they would come had spread less tight with that more time on sending our country off a cliff edge anyway, but these are massive massive mountains of work that you have to do every year. It was episode journey to Bezos of that show in particular that show is so dense it always had three stories, Sean film, not even unveil Sean film. Yeah. He film at it to make your day, even more difficult. Yeah. And at the time, you know, since now they've gotten the film also because Alec was on high movie star I work on. I will I will look better on film. And I was like whatever will make him look better. We'll help me too. Did you do all seven seasons on film? Yes. I think so I think so but without many absolutes too tough to turn around ho often. Would you go? I don't know. I don't know. What else? Did we these characters? Well, well, we would hit. Seasons. Five six someone would pitch something that was absolutely batch it, and then you'd say we did it already, you know, like what if he turns into a ghost than eats a car, and you'd be like shut we did that in ghost car. But those characters were very fertile. But there's so many times where we just we just worked, you know. Seventy eight. We just worked all the time. And we all had young kids Roberts. We bought babies. Yeah. But you shouldn't you knew what you were getting into you. You wanted to catch yourself? But I was so stupid. I was coming from Saturday Night Live with a show is live. You would go in the afternoon rehearsed than it was live in new, you know, and then I I did cry when we did the pilot went to shoot the pilot on. I realized what a single camera day was like I'd also only ever been in one movie. So I didn't even have a sense of what film days were when you were number one on the call sheet. And I just was like I wanted to leave Saturday Night Live to spend more time with my daughter. And then I was like what have I done? Sure, it was terrible. It was devastating. I don't know what we're doing. I was jewelry g last year. So. And he was talking about how you would just go back to your apartment. Yeah. So you would because you Thus. that's. Then you weren't sure that you are also in just about every scene. Yeah. You've Elmo mold of tissue. I would feel day and then ever head back to your apartment, and they'd writers would work all night. Yeah. You'd put your baby down. Yeah. She'd wake up in the morning. And there was one time when we were working and and with a half group half the staff, and it put us to bed, and we were working, and Robert, and I were running it. And we both seemed like we were thinking and we both had fallen asleep. And I don't know how long they let us sleep. But we gotta go like it could have been two minutes. It could have been forty minutes while they just sat there flipping us off. And we're like, oh, we're we're both. Okay. And we just would keep doing that. So on one level you think he please don't renewed for another season. I can't I can't keep going. Well, I knew I had to work when we were enjoying we were doing, but the lifestyle was absolutely brutal. I think Robert was more worried because he had moved his whole family from California back to New York. And and he was he talks a lot about how he was always sweating like the pickup for the back nine episodes the first season. I I was again refer to myself as like baby's day out that old John Hughes movie where the babies is walking. And Ville misses. It was kind of foolish that way. Quite in the moment..

"Again. He was a harmless New York who's a buffoon buffoon that the time Gore's. And we were starting the museum Pizza Hut commercials. Guys was ordering that we can update was still we had like columns in could gown in a pageant thing in a long wig. And we're like, it's winnow. It's weakened Trump date. And we started it, and then just like what are we doing and started over? So we were in these rehearsing in these get ups with like, ugly columns, and I had some tardy like pageantry gown on and ten may and walked out on the floor. Like, you look good like that you should dress. Like that more often. I remember thinking fuck you. But I probably say, thank you. So you writing that is the definition of a back door brag, by the way what I'm not saying. It looks pretty good like Japan. Good. Look pretty good on the president. It was like maybe I'll pay her hundred thousand. No it wasn't. And the other weird weird thing that I have in common with with the president is. That we sh- shared a baby nurse. Oh, lovely Irishwoman took care of my daughter when I was working when she was born I born and then went right to them to them next. Wow. That's a strange little New York thing about it is. Yeah. But so you're writing jokes for this sort of New York buffoon at the time. Yeah. He was on the show. Yeah. And then then quite quickly you become an it's always this is like the first thing that's ever said about the first female head writer, and sometimes they forget to say head writer, the first female writer, or or they say, I don't know. Yeah. But it's. Yeah. Dude that suit you did you like the responsibility. Yeah. I did suit me. I think in that that job is in part a managerial job. It's not right. Right. I did very well. I got a lot of stuff on the show. But you know, it doesn't have to be the funniest writer has to be the person who can help you. So the administrative rule with there's a and there's an editorial. There's like see what you're trying to do. Can I help you do it better? I I'm telling you could lose page for kind of thing to script editing. Other people still trying to find thing is snow. There aren't really any rules. And so if someone is really like, I don't want to man, I want to do it my way, you're like, okay. You can't really wrangle anyone much. But and I think that's so you know, I had a good temperament for that. Seth Meyers did it for a long time. After me, he's got that same temperament. He's a he's a great writer. But he's also a great editor of your, right? Yeah. You'd have to encourage people in your tough to you'd have to take even if it's a sketch. You hated you had to try to improve it without, you know, shaming the person or or changing the DNA of what the joy that part of it. I didn't have after a while at warm out. But okay, because after a while you're like, I don't know. I don't even like this character. But okay, African sketches better or we're not or like the guilt that you didn't that. You did knock it out of the box right under you, are you the one this choosing? What was on? You get a say you got to go in this meeting after the table read and with the producers and have say, okay of it's automatically Lorn. And then the hosts opinion, you know, what? Sometimes they just like the accent. They're doing or also the host guest gets a little bit of a say. Yeah. So the host is part of that first election to for. Sure. Okay. So then you not hosted. I do know. Well, you tell me we'll get on it. Yeah. So how'd you end up? Front of the cameras. Colin Quinn was the hosted weekend update. And they wanted to do it the next season. They wanted to change it and through the great benefit of their laziness, they sort of were like, well who's here already literatures looking run the looking good..

"I five puts the study play writing. So I usually agree. Okay. Technically. Yeah. And you know, what might you do with that do be what were they what were they training people to do? Well, they were training people to be actors to be playwrights, hopefully to be directors at like the regional theater level that kind of program was very academic. It wasn't like they were gearing you up to go to Hollywood. But are you thinking then that's where I'm going? I think yeah. I think then I still was going like an after this Saturday Night Live somehow to be a writer or perform nobody plans to be a writer. Everyone wants hunt Vitry know when you when you you know, I'm going to be on it. Okay. I'm going to be on it, right, obviously. So when did you first fall into an pro when did the first become a thing for you? I somehow knew had read books about Saturday Night Live. I knew that those people as old very based your life at this time. Hi, do I get into southern sort of in many ways was, but I think that's not unusual because it was such a big deal. And so I had read a book, I think the book is maybe called Saturday night. I think by had read about those people, and I knew that they had come from second city almost all of them had come from either Toronto or Chicago. And so when I was done studying a girl that I went to school with we decided that we would move to Chicago. She wanted to pursue acting. And I wanted to try to study at the second city. Okay. So we moved there. I mean, we do have improv in the UK and the company so players, and they do a lot. But it's not it's a thing. You can study here. It's like, you can go, and you can take classes did you knew you'd be good at it. Or did that no matter? Did you just the I thought I would. Okay. I don't remember why I thought I would did you know, what it was. I think I knew from acting exercises and from. Yeah. Whatever I had studied about Gilda and Belushi and John candy. I. I thought I kind of knew what it was. But there are all kinds of forms of it. And Chicago it really was right. A lifestyle you could fully immerse yourself in that world. This is the bit. I don't think in the in the UK we have any equivalent to oversee some people could be better than others. You're gonna have a natural predators predisposition to it. But is it like a skill set that you can learn like playing the piano, you might not necessarily have an instinct for it? But you can learn sort of how to do. Yes. I think it's sort of like dance. Maybe you can learn it and some people are gonna learn it faster. And some people are going to be built for it. A ha- you met your husband there, and my husband Jeff was the piano player accompanist at improv Olympic and eventually a second city. He went onto be the music, one of the musical directors..

I was like to have on sitcom, and and I got the opportunity to. To be in a Tina Fey pilot, and it was up. It was called. What was I going cabinet college? It was for FOX. And you know, when you're a fulltime writer on a show. You can't also be an actor. So at a at a pick one and at the time, we didn't know that the Chelsea show would be ending. We didn't know what the future held, and I had to make that really tough call 'cause like I was gonna steady paycheck and I loved that job. A love seemed like such a fun show. It was I love the people. We laughed all day every day. But I got that's a fucking. It was possible hurt my heart so bad. I was like because I love those people are like family, and I and I love just beat like being a part of it. And I love having a steady paycheck, and it was one of those things where you're just like, I gotta take the risk. I might. Fall flat on my face. But I didn't come out here. I Come didn't out. come out come out here to play it safe into. You know, the easy thing is to just take the job. I mean, stick with your job and take the paycheck and and be comfortable. Like, I gotta I gotta take gotta take. I take the leap. I gotta do it. And maybe I will regret it. But Sutphin inside of me was like, you gotta go. And that was the hardest thing in the world. She didn't want me to go. And you know, and I just I just like I love you. But I gotta do this Anna sizing right now about a scenario, which does does not exist Chelsea sitting at her desk and you enter office and Chelsea picking apart which she doesn't like about Tina Fey. I know it doesn't. I know. It doesn't end. I'm fantasizing about Pige. Oh, gosh. She tells the man for those people that don't know just know her as like a personality, she was fucking bitingly funny on very fucking witty and smart, oh, she dist. And and I remember her getting fight with another comedian. Really? I won't say his name. Oh and comedy club. No, no, no, no in life. Okay. Like verbal fight. No. The comedian was doing the comedy club. And she was doing the arena. Okay. And they were staying at the same hotel. She was having drinks outside the comedian walked in and saw her and. When over to say hi to and he was a big movie star comedian big median when over to say hi to and I guess she just kinda was like, she's partying. And she was like, oh, hey, what's up kind of? I guess he felt bluer off and comment on Twitter about her really remember talking to him. And he said that and I was like I would not do that in my head. I was like, right. Well, fuck with Chelsea. She I just seen enough of her stand up to and then she just replied to his comment and just. Annihilated him. Oh, we're really, and and then the hordes of Chelsea lately fans just attack this guy. And he was around then. Yeah. Remember the tour with her at all? I I did a couple of shows I would have gone on tour with her. But I ended up leaving at the time where her new tour was starting. So I love I love not only a paycheck and a job. But I knew I would have to walk away from her tour as well. Did you get to work with Tina Fey? So I did that pilot, and it was amazing so fun. "Office is winding down. And this is just bananas. The chairman of NBC entertainment tells Tina Fey who's like, you know, comedy bodice Tina Fey like I don't even she's in her own cash later isn't as no one. I don't know how to talk about. And and he says to her I want you to write a pilot for Ellie Kemper like I don't even know what to say that is so amazing. Did you freak out? Well, I mean that is still flattering first of all I do not know exactly what went down. I would imagine. He threw a number of people, you know, who he might be interested in making show at so. So let's like got to be realistic about that. But I are you kidding me? Like, I know it first of all first of all so Robert Carlyle, Tina Fey are writing. I'm they she created thirty rock. He was the show runner. I think he was Showrunner. He was the executive producer. They were handed hand. Secondly, I adore that. So in the first place, the thirty. The rock is the most incredible show you've ever seen on television. I I mean, it's brilliant. That is there on its own and then separately. I so loved tina's bossy pants I loved as Sarah Palin like all of it. Right. So she like you just said she's in her own in good way on her own plane. So that I okay that first meeting with them. I have never been sooner recipients. Were you so nervous? Of course, you wording, these icons in your in your you just don't wanna mess it up. And and so I get I'm anxious person. I get nervous for a whole bunch of stuff that felt like a new a new and previously unexperienced type of nervous. I cannot imagine. And was this like super initial like, we don't even have an idea, or we have a very developed was I think it was initial maybe they had the idea didn't tell it to me then. But they they were it was it was like, I was told it was sort of a general meeting just to meet them. It was I remember it because it was in may. So I think the office had definitely just ended that year and thirty record think ended earlier that I think they entered into Semper net year. So it to meet felt like a general meeting. But then only a couple months later, I had dinner with them again. And they and they presented the actual idea that they had which which I definitely thought was not the actual idea dying to hear what did you think? I mean in our lives we. I've never seen a story. Like, this is so it's just bald Hurley, and what what were you think rethinking this is a disaster. Or this is brilliant or something between to get was. Of course, I made it about me at the my initial reaction was to make about me. And I was like they're definitely testing me. Because if I take him. I am a fool and that was the answer. So I was like, okay. And then when they sent me the Scranton realized, oh, they're not you're in L. You are an idiot. But in a different way, they did. Right. The show. And here is the what I felt so nervous about the premise because it's not for anyone listening. Doesn't know what it's about. It's about a young woman who was kidnapped when she was fourteen in held underground in a bunker by crazy man, played by Jon Hamm, and then fifteen years later, she's rescued by the FBI of.
