"It wouldn't be a show in late March without me giving you my asking pics. We all know that your big show is Sunday Night. I hope it's gonna be a good show. I don't really approve of the three female hosts. None of them won the sites know. Amy Schumer used to be funny until she just became this elite liberal woke progressive person. I can't stand her. You know, give me Tina Fey again. Give me Sarah Silverman. Give me there's plenty of women I'd go with. Not the three they picked this year. Please know. Then I'm gonna do probably ten minutes a piece here and there, come in, come on the stage and leave the stage. The less they say the better, I just know I'm gonna cringe in the opening.

"When did we forget that. Many know they've been these guys aren't the they're not the golden girls but they're close. They're like as close as we're allowed to get her century but the fact that they're all super funny and they get to be funny. What's important to me. And you and the missing fifth is from mean girls musical. Yeah raise ashley. Who's original group member who they see in flashback sometimes and hopefully will find a way to keep justifying seeing her and season to season two. Right right it's also the people without giving anything away. They may recognize the dolly parton cameo on the show. Well so just if we can close with last minute just a couple of big picture things. During the run of kimmy schmidt. I think was when you produce in starting whiskey. Tango foxtrot with I guess which robert also was very involved with and then with amy. I think it's now seven movies martin. Orlov mean man of the year. Baby mama anchorman. Two sisters and wine country So i guess is to you these days. The line between film and tv is as blurred as ever but are is film-acting. Something that you want to do. More of going forward i dunno. I mean i've talked with my friends about you. Hi it's amazing how you can go from like oh man if i could only be in a movie to like when is it. I mean i do feel like maybe. There's maybe there's i i look forward to Being like an old lady in a movie where my kids are grown. I don't know i do think that. Tv is my home now. You and amy co host with the golden globes in two thousand thirteen fourteen. Fifteen and twenty one is that fun and and what do you make of the fact that you may have hosted. The last Owns one time. We said they twenty fifteen. I think we said welcome to the final four. You just ahead of time. Yeah yeah i mean. I think we'll be sad to if we don't hang out next year but we'll just find another way to hang is there. Have you been approached the hosting the oscars is that just a different vibe than the globes. It's such a different vibe. It's such a high stress if the stakes are too high and no no one's there laugh right. Yeah so you would if somebody if they ever came around the idea of having a host again and they asked you with or without amy. It's a. It's a no i i would like to stick to my guns and say it's a. It's a very grateful. No thank you. And then i guess just finally. We've talked about in in an hour here. How just amazing amount of stuff you've accomplished already. Is there anything in your mind. That is still specifically on the to do list or is it just kind of keep the keep the train rolling at this level. "Come by because he knew that. If i didn't end up wanting to do it or if i stunk at it and marshall but he pm wig had rachel was still there. Leakey had plenty of people who could do it. And so i think. I think i didn't go over there to do that. I one until the day of is that possible. That i not go the friday night even shooting. I think the saturday of that first sarah palin. I know that. I shot an extra day of thirty rock that i shot all day with oprah strong armed into being in an episode and then i was on the brakes trying to learn the impression to make up an impression on my breaks. And i've said this before. But i remember oprah saying to me like i think you might be doing too much oprah tells you this will so what for you was. The was the first indication that this was actually really working because obviously there was a huge audience response but was there a was it at dress or even before that where somebody said. We've really got something special here. Well i think it was a perfect storm. I think the audience really rooted for it because they felt that they had cast it And i had never been a part. I as a performer. I had never been chosen ever before. It was always may just being like how about me. But how can i do it and people being like no and so. It was the first time i ever performed anything. Where the like the door was. Open for me Get so far when there's a little bit of goodwill there. Oh my god it's it's just a little easier. And also seth meyers. And amy end and i think you know amy and i definitely i think. Probably the bulk of the writing but those schedules. But we definitely had opinions in mid changes in pitch jokes and You know. Seth was at the top of his game and it just was It was our a prayer for owen. Meany lives and building to this will. Just the last thing about that topic is the october eighteenth. Two thousand eight episode where she actually showed up. There got the biggest ratings personnel in fourteen years. And it's interesting because somehow in the back of your head you were able to look at it outside of yourself and know that there were certain things you did and didn't want to happen with her there. Can you just take. Like what were your. What were your concerns. Well you know. I had worked there for a long time before right so i knew kind of how things work. And she wants to come on because generally usually people embrace even if they don't really like it or whatever maybe they find that they like to appear like they embrace impression of themselves And i think. I did say like please want to Because i i thought we were starting at that time to see the beginning of what i think was a very very very beginning of divisive politics. I mean now looking back on it now. It's like a charity fund. Run but at the time it felt it felt divisive. Wasn't i wasn't on board will. So what you what. You weren't on board with Was not actually sharing screen with. Can we do it that. I'm just not in a two shot with her. Voice is because if if i'm gonna to shot with her it's what they're gonna show at the emmys when i die and i don't want that to be what they show at the emmys. Well that's thinking ahead. Let's long long term plan so but okay so that there was a there was a moment here where this is october. Two thousand and eight new york times article. Bill carter quote. It's easy to find tina fey on tv but not her show. That was the headline and the article. Itself says quote with her three emmy awards her ubiquitous eric commercials and especially her must see sarah palin impersonations. Tina fey is not. Just the hottest starring nbc. She's about the hottest star in show business at the moment so whereas thirty rock close quote so meanwhile i guess there was still there was always the struggle to with time slots and just figuring out how to keep it alive but it did. For seven seasons twenty two episodes. You guys made it happen. All you have the tapes right but also you know while being a wife a mom while making movies which mentioned later while hosting other things and So i guess just did it end because you understandably enough for just like this is a very heavy plate or what was the reason it ended when it did it ended. It was feeling like it was time to end. I think by that time. I had learned and i think i did have everybody in their proper deals through new even through a season eight and so i think alec was a wet but but I had had my second daughter during season. Six and i was tired and And i remember bob. Green blood had just taken over. And i thought well this is also when banou people takeover they don't want the people stuff and so i thought. Let me try to control the landing of this and so i went to bob and said we would like to do thirteen and then be done and it was a very quick yes because i think he maybe canceled it anyway but because it was expensive you know it was shot on film in new york and the more seasons. You go with people. Everyone's fees go up and and so we did those thirteen in a very proud of the ramp out of the show. We we. I feel like we did a good job. I feel like you know. We studied so many series finales to get ready for it. And i do. I do think. I do feel good about how we ended up. The i don't know how much of a break you got after that. Because let's just note that cami schmidt goes on in two thousand fifteen. I believe originally had been planned for. Nbc right but ends up at netflix. An you know has very passionate following a really fun show. And i guess ellie you knew from maybe the officer brides no l. e. Once or twice and robert nigh we took a little break after thirty rock ended. I think i made a movie.

"I remember like tom has been really mean too. Few guys like conan. I think originally he wrote off very early on also and but i mean not in. The misogyny is a different thing to deal with comedy now. It's so weird but meanwhile must must've helped to alleviate any concern over that. When i guess it's for season two maybe you won an acting emmy right. That was That's kind of a fu to anyone who wanted to question that. But i guess overall though the tv academy was always on board with your show like you guys madman. I think every year but it was more an issue of the viewership. And i wonder what you attribute that to. Was it. just the fact that single camera comedy was still something people were getting to kind of get used to having been for so many years queued about when to laugh or was it the fact that you guys were so fast that people just were not used to that at that point or something else i mean i do think i think the tv academy and the saga awards kept us alive. They kept we kept winning. Things said alec kept winning and winning and winning and they just couldn't cancel us. You know. I think maybe we show. That was kind of built for streaming before were streaming. But that's set said it was clean it was i think so just that show is not for everyone and be that annette doesn't make it a better or worse show. That show is what it's some. It's crab legs. I don't know will Now had your personal reference point when you you know you got the notes from riley and you're having to figure out how you what what this is gonna be was was the reference point like a larry sanders type thing just the show within or were you. How did you approach it in your own mind from the outset larry. Sanders was definitely the gold standard of a time of any kind of showbiz show. And of course you know there's no way of measuring how much the dick van dyke show was inside mice cells from and the mary tyler moore show in terms of the workplace comedy that is about tv basically and so all those things were in its dna. I think someone wrote a thing where they compared it to the muppet show. Structurally and i was like. Oh it is the muppet show you know. People outside of the business should know you slow as you referenced. You start the pilot. Then you hope to stay alive for one season and you guys were constantly so i guess in a way where you ever allowing yourself to think like very far down the road about where this was all going when you there was always sort of the thing hovering over that it's there's no guarantee of tomorrow it was definitely especially season one and then once we won the emmy. Then we're like oh maybe will come up but season one. It was really the attitude of like if we if we just make these the we want them. Then we'll we'll have tapes of it. It was like and then we'll have the tapes and sunday like we can show our friends. The tapes it was it was definitely just get it get it made so we can prove something that we got it made and by season two and three. Then we were like. Oh maybe we can plan a little bit longer. Yeah so it ended up going from six to thirteen and in that period. Of course just got at least briefly bring up the fact that i guess this was all in thousand eight. Starting in two thousand eight there is a selection of sir palin by the late john mccain to be the vice presidential candidate and you know i guess today in the whatever it is decade plus since then we're used to people making cameos regularly on s. particularly as politicians That wasn't really the case. When you start up as sarah palin if i if i remember correctly i mean there had been some but i guess i just wonder i think the first one was you. As failing. amy's hillary was at the time. That was the first time it was all in this six week span of two thousand eight election. And i think i don't think people saw it really as a cameo from me because i don't think people realized that i didn't work there anymore. Also but i pretty much never did sketches. When i did work how. It was a weird time. Because i i it didn't have to be me like obviously. Amy could've done it had been Did hillary so it might have limited that. But like kirsten wig. Can anyone could done it but there was just this weird resemblance that people felt like they saw and end. Lauren said it was like the you know the world cast it. He he did not have a choice. And so the the actual you know call though was learn saying. Please do us a favor income by. I'm i feel like. I was pretty cocky in two thousand eight because we won prizes and i think i was probably hearing that like are saying be her and i was probably walking around thirty rock being like if i want to impressionist anymore like nobody had called me and then i think lauren who is like the week of the first show and lauren called on thursday or something and so we'll just come by. We'll take a look at it..

"Made maybe the movie. Admission remember and then we were sitting in our little tiny office new office and thinking about what we're gonna do next and richard whites are agent said. Would you ever developed for ellie kemper. And that was the first person really. Oh yes idea. She's so beautiful intelligent and funny and he's also just a lovely person And so we started developing with her in mind and that's where the idea came from and it was it was originally an order of thirteen for nbc and the original pilot was very dark. Wouldn't have seemed dark at all for streaming but it was much too dark prime bc more darker than a darker than a girl being kept in an underground bunker but a cult leader. It was that was still what happened her. But just the way we portrayed the reverend and the moods the you know It is still really like and i think could have survived on ethics. We change things in the pilot that we were shooting. We were on shooting up so twelve or thirteen. When we started to get the sense that nbc didn't was going to burn it and we'll put it on after america's got talent in the summer. Can you imagine imagine concerned about i. Well i think it. It seems to have worked out a nice way. I wanna give a shout out to your husband. Because i think that's still the best theme song of a show that i can still never get it out of my head. And he also did thirty rock steam right and then of course all the the theme for kimmy schmidt. The theme for kimmy schmidt was not even nominated emmy which i don't know the crazy remember it was it's the greatest theme song of the last twenty four and he's know added again now with Girls flava i saw l. a. times article today. That's taking the thirty one songs of season one of girls five and ranking them and i was like by the way. Did you realize that there were thirty. One that's capable or song pieces in eight episodes of well. I mean you. You're you bring up the that transition perfectly. Because i want now say you know march two thousand twenty. We all go into pandemic lockdown essentially but for most of us that involved you know sitting pajamas and ordering food and yet in the time since the pandemic i believe that this is a complete list you have done the following you did soul and are finished up. Soul and the prequel. Now you film the thirty rock reunion special which was on zoom in july. You began developing the film. Adaptation of mean girls The musical so we'll have that at some point you worked on. I guess parts of season one and now parts of season. Two for nbc's show mr mayor with an elder and and now of course girls five of which again is well also. I don't wanna leave out. I guess there's an upcoming netflix. Animated series called me. And it's just like. I don't know where you found time to to do all of this but girls five of is the thing that everybody's talking about this week because it started last week Dropped on peacock. And so i want to. I guess start by saying whoa. What at this point when you. I don't think you have to prove anything to anybody. Why are you. Why do you work. Why do you push this hard still and particularly though with girls five other. How did that come out of this period well. Meredith skirting was a writer for the entire duration of unbreakable kimmy schmidt and she's a fantastic leaf funny writer and she brought robert me..

"You know pressured by s to pick it up and he didn't actually own alec and that was kind of amazing good way to negotiate And so the the other thing was that i mean other certainly not thing was now for the first time you who have said you were never especially comfortable being the person at the on camera. Maybe i don't know if i don't wanna put words in your mouth but it was an adjustment. Was it not to now be the person who a whole show would be revolving around. Yeah it was alert. It just was a learning curve. And again i learned so much from alex literally just leaned. You're right in the other person's get out of their light you know. Look at look at the there. I- closest to the cat just technical stuff and how to pace yourself as a person how to learn so much from him and from from jane to and it. But it's a learning curve that you see so many people go through. You know we. Recently we went had not looked at this in forever. And i did not get the whole thing but Somebody was reminding me to go back and look at the first review of thirty rock In the washington post. Tom shales just gave a review. That was so really scathing and hateful toward me personally. Like she's terrible. She should not be in this. And it's i forgot. I get i get a copy of it and frame it now. Here's what we know. Tina fey is no orson welles and everyone seems to know. It's obvious to everyone. But tina fey which is deeply misogynistic. Because to be like yo. How dare you be in a show. That's about you starring. You be like i don't know. Did you ask jerry seinfeld there to. I remember like tom has been really mean too. Few guys like conan. I think originally he wrote off very early on also and but i mean not in. The misogyny is a different thing to deal with comedy now. Unlike the Academy Awards, which are given out by the academy that's about 6000 people. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association is about 90 people, and they're all reporters. There, guys like me, men and men and women like me reporters that cover entertainment and they're the ones that give, you know, decide and give up The Golden Globe awards, but The controversy is here that it was learned that not a single member of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association astonishingly is a person of color. And you know that may account for why movies like the Five Bloods the, uh, movie about my rainy my Rainey's black bottom. The movie about cash is playing Sam Cooke and This meeting of this four legendary black leaders of the sixties. Why why all these movies that are black oriented movies were not even nominated. When? In fact, they're some of the best movies of the year, you know, So there is a lot of controversy about this Golden Globes being exclusively white. S so you know, we'll see how that's gonna play out if if it does at all tonight. Amy Poehler and Tina Fey are

Chadwick Boseman And Viola Davis Grab Golden Globe Noms
"78th annual Golden Globe Awards were the nominees were announced yesterday. For the show That's airing on the 28th of this month with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler co hosting for the fourth time. I didn't notice this yesterday, but There were some snubs. Always snubs. There were some snap it up, Dubs Love is dead to me was shut out. Completely. I wasn't surprised by that. I get So I wasn't surprised because I remember. I feel like you guys weren't loving it. I feel like I liked the second season more. Then most people did. But eh, so I'm not. I'm not surprised because I didn't feel like it had the same critical acclaim that season. One did when it felt very unexpected, But I guess I would be surprised just because you think of the total Number of releases this year, which didn't seem like a ton. I don't know. I just feel like this Christina Applegate, especially and Linda Cardellini. They're just So good. There's like so much great. So many great performances out there. I get it if they were nominated in the first season, it's like, OK, we already did you let's move on to the next person Ma Rainey's black bottom, which I just watched last weekend. Did not get a best picture nomination. But Chadwick Boseman and Viola Davis did get acting nods. I think that's accurate. Sure it was You know, I know it was. I believe it was a play, right? Yes, And it felt like you were watching a play. It felt very Like what? That's a weird thing to happen. But if you're watching a play, you kind of have a different suspension of disbelief. Sure, oftentimes than you do in the, you know a movie. So, but Violet Davis outstanding. Chadwick Boseman. They did a dedication to him. Also at the end of that movie, by the way,
Snubs and surprises from this year's Golden Globe nominations
"The globe. Nominations happened and boy. They'd seemed a mess. How do you feel hi. How are you feeling about words and being back. I guess i'm glad to have award season back though isn't it. We can discuss specific to these nominations. I feel a little bit like charlie brown with the football because every year we talk about make fun of the hollywood foreign press association. And let's be clear we're going to continue to make fun of them. They are traditionally. It's a small group of international journalists. Who do not have a lot of renown really know outside of the fact that they are in this mysterious priests small group of people. They really like celebrities or their definition of another other thing. We'll discuss and their star fuckers and they give nominations to people they want in a room rather than a merit or at least our interpretation of merit. It seems like to win an award. You just have to go to as many parties as possible and then think the association from the stage. We know that there are always bad. Choices always mysterious traces. We're always like what is going on. Who are these people. Why do we do this. But i would say even for the hollywood foreign press association and even for a film here had some challenges aka pandemic theaters being close and far fewer films released unusual. These are real embarrassing. And i woke up just being like. Are you serious. We have to do this again. Like come on yeah i. It's hard to know we've gone through looking glass or not some of these. I think we're fairly standard and expected in their plenty of movies that i'm sure we'll be talking about when we get to the oscar nominations in a couple months but there were a handful of nominations. What what. I will generously called the surprises. That just took my breath away. That i i think even in my wildest dreams i could not have imagined the fbi concocting so. Let's just talk about them because this award show is happening really soon. It's february twenty eight. It's gonna be hosted by. Amy poehler and tina fey. It's going to be on nbc. And so we're going to actually having awards season to cover for real for real. I think we have to start with the jared leto nomination for the little things. This is probably the single biggest. W t.f of this collection and it's funny because when we talked about the little things on the show last week i think we both walked away from the little things thinking. Jared leto is pretty entertaining in it. And maybe rising to the challenge of this camp script and that being said i. I never considered him. A worthy report surprised to see this nomination. I enjoyed watching him in the little things in the context of the little things which was not a film that worked at all and so at least someone was doing something you know and i was talking with friends about it. There's like a really a nice like vintage. This is bad feeling to the little things that i found pretty comforting. You know it's like it's not like someone just made a twitter thread into a movie on an iphone and like someone wrote a script and they tried to do this old ninety staying. And then jared leto is doing the weird villain and having too much fun with it. It's like i know what's happening here even if it's not working and and i'm glad to have it back. I do not know that it needed to rise to the level of golden globes ovation especially because the golden globes supporting category does not differentiate between drama and comedy in some of the comedy. Nominations things get wild. But that's because you're kind of you're filling it out there some extra slots. A lot of people didn't get nominated in supporting actor. Jared leto like weird joke of serial killer. I think he's right. Can we talk about that for a second. This is dangerous rabbit hole to go down. I have no idea. The truth is. I don't know i think you're meant to believe that he did. Not if you haven't seen this movie. Sorry for spoiling it for you. It's unspoiled in many ways because it has an ambiguous ending of sword. I- i- i- jared. Leto obviously is has won an academy award. He is a very famous person has been celebrated. He's also like kind of a joke. You know like. I really enjoy him as a performer. A famous person. But he's kind of a joke. I mean he's he so Has all of the pretensions. And absurdity of the method actor who sort of you know pulling pranks on his cast members by trying to get into character and so outside and so masking his beauty all the time with these ridiculous roles you know like in the little things that character has like a is is fat and walks with a limp and why it's just pure actually affect nation and the role is actually affectation and the asia was impressed by that or impressed. By the idea of having jared sit in on their award show. But jared. Leto is not tom hanks. For example someone who did not get knocked out.

"Could do it, but it wouldn't be the same years ago. I came up with a TV show idea. Oh, and actually wasn't even TV show it was it was an event. Was a one night on Lee event and I wanted to get Cloris Leachman. And Betty White and Ruth Buzzi on and the these women in Hollywood who have survived the test of time, and I wanted to get him on a stage one night with bourbon and I want to call it the broads Nice. And I wanted them to tell the story of old Hollywood and what it was like to come up and what we really didn't know and what things were really like and what it was like to be an actress and how you made that career possible and just get into the nitty gritty, dirty stories. Oh, my gosh. And I'm like I would love to do this show. But I know I could never host it into me. I would if I could just get Tina Fey to host this thing way could do this, And it's like to know that you lost out on some of those opportunities closely. Just that woman made me laugh. Absolutely positively. Terrific. If you get the spicy, not let us know what what you think with the cake, Don canyon and other seasonings thistles, he drink smoke. I would never do that. This is emotional management. I'm Dr Christian Conte, once a prison nurse told an inmate that she was appalled that she heard a particular celebrity say an alarming phrase on television. When the inmate pointed out that she uses that very same phrase herself quite frequently. Her response was here, but I would never do that on TV. So if you go back to show that really holds up, so I had high I had high hopes for the mayor because the same people behind it and the mayor is good. It's it's not quite there yet. It's a show that I could see that could get there. It just needs to kind of find its footing. But it's got some of the same, you know, because it's by the same people. It's got some of the same humor is a 30 rock on dead dancing, plays the mayor of Los Angeles who becomes the mayor after a special election. Um, it's not. It feels like it could be kind of trump allegory thing, But it's not least because we don't need that we're living in right now. So, yeah, but the fact that it's just Ted Danson, who's really, really strong in comedy, and then Tina Fey writing it is I saw that and I thought, you know you saw the promo for it. I'm like Okay is a promo. Funny is a trailer funnier. Is it solid? And I give Tina Fey the benefit out 10 times out of 10. So good. Good. I'm glad that that Zoe Hey, before I let you go. Ted Danson Is the Mayor of Los Angeles in New TV Show
"Mr mayor is new. Show from rubber karla faye and features a lot of fantastic people and the featuring of a lot of fantastic people is reason to watch it. It's ted danson as the new mayor of los angeles and this is just another one where we're timing is so bad really You know if you are in los angeles you are well aware of what having a somewhat. Bumbling somewhat ineffectual mayor or even having let's just say a mayor whose track record is mixed. Let's just say that. Let's say. Garcetti did some things that the beginning of the pandemic that seemed to be good and then not so much lately. That's an it is it. I'm trying to be tempered. We've definitely had a lot of evidence of what happens in a major city if the mayor is not perfect and so i found myself really kind of unable to laugh at a show where it's like. Ha ha ha. The mayor of los angeles is job is to go to mall. Openings and celery appearances your results on that one may vary as los angelino or at least a los angelino transplant. I also kind of got the feeling that tina fey and rubber karloff. Not so much with the knowing. Anything about los angeles and twenty twenty. The jokes are all really really lazy. Really really facile jokes about california. That in some cases are are two decades old our colleague. Ingo king reviewed it for us and she notes that one of the funniest jokes involves the other candidates who run for mayor against ten danson's character and you stop and realize that the joke that's being made about the other candidates including gary coleman's ghost and a libertarian. Porn star all relate to a recall election. That was fifteen years ago. I mean that is just not finger on the pulse and so all of these things if the show were funnier. It'd be funnier but let's not forget that. Mr mayor was originally conceived as thirty rock spin off that was going to be set in new york featuring alec baldwin reprising his role and baldwin was negotiating for the better part of a year per sources and when he backed out producers went out to ted danson. Ted danson lives in los angeles and did not want to relocate to new york so they moved the show to los an- to being set in los angeles and removed any traces of of its ties to thirty rock.
