"Best and so Tina Brown concluded they're saying when Diana did leave her own world to the hospital ward or the homeless shelter it was never royal condescension in her last interview before her death she told Lamont I'm much closer to the people at the bottom than the people at the top it never occurred to Diana or anyone else at the time that this empathy could be as powerful force as intellect. It also seems like the people at the top suck and. Elsewhere that's another way of putting. It does seem like the manners and conventions of the society sort of incentivize Seki behavior and A. tagline. Yes. So. The last thing that happens before she meets Prince Charles and we get into the courtship. is she gets a step mom her name is Raine La- gay leget. Spell L. E. G. E. mean yeah, British. Names are pronounced some way that they decided on seven hundred years ago. So like we have no chance, all British words just call her rain legs we know that that's raw. Yes, and we're agreeing that we know it's wrong and if we try and say something that sounds right, it'll be wrong also yes. So her dad meets rain legs who is sort of like a tragic figure people think of her as like really tacky and just sort of off a little bit like one of the details in Tina Brown's book is that they're having a pool party and you don't support your kids. It's like eleven in the morning everybody's playing around their swimming. Suits, they've got like soccer boppers or whatever, and rain legs shows up in a ball gown like more tissue Adams ballgown. It's like it's just everything is a little bit off about her she's like to formal and informal at the same time but I his father seems to be wild about her. He's like I'm a partial man and this is an overly posh lady whether the details from Andrew Morton's book. He says Christmas at Althorp with. Rain Spencer in charge was a bizarre comedy she presided over the president opening like an officious timekeeper. The children were only allowed to open the presents she indicated and only after she had looked at her watch to give the go-ahead to tear the paper off. So. Weird. But it's like there's so many weird little things like this where. She's applying these rules, but the rules don't make any sense like she understands that being fancy is like having rules about arbitrary stuff. So like does that. But. So the most bananas detail of this is that Dana's father start seeing her they meet her once and then they get married without telling the children. Diana finds out from the newspapers. Her brother Young Charles finds out from the principle of. The principals like, Hey, good luck on getting your new stepmom there, and he's like step what and then they have a big party like a wedding party with a thousand people to celebrate the wedding and they don't invite the kids. They just stay home with the nannies come on. It's so weird. This is this all seems based on of Olympic children are like just little hunks of semi-autonomous gristle that don't notice what's happening to them. The COO new mummy now. British people. In, the sort of the sad outcome of this is that they're live at their father, but they also take a lot of their anger out on rain herself semi. As Diana loads, rain, legs..

"Basically. Whatever people give me address I need to wear one of them. It's really under normal circumstances. It would not be that big of a deal, but it's a front in this larger war ends the perfect symbolism, right? Because both of her parents are going to be there. So whatever she wears, they're both going to see who she sort of quote unquote supporting and like she doesn't like she's not ready for this much responsibility. Yeah. Yeah. And also like from an early age like her life has consumed by the kind of stuff but her marriage is going to eventually be about his lake. Yeah. These little social gestures that everyone cares about his. Hat and is going to interpret and you can't do it right? No matter what you do because someone won't be disappointed. That's really insightful. I mean this is she's understanding herself as a symbol So again, even though her dad is like I want my kids back, it's so great almost immediately after moving back in with her dad, he sends her to boarding school. So it's like I'm going to go to court get my kids back and then I'm GonNa. Like fuck them off to like whatever some brick building in like. Or something I don't even know. Some of the British place names in this story sound like satires British place names I'm sorry per barking him. Fix which I don't know. He censored this boarding school. Apparently, her parents are the only parents of kids there who are divorced. Wow and she's like acutely aware of this. This is Kramer versus Kramer. Mike. I might. Her world. So at School Andrew describes her as sort of somewhat of an outcast because of this divorce thing and Brown, and me are both a little bit skeptical of this description because she's also at school doing a billion activities she's doing swimming. She's doing something called Netball. She's doing dance. She's in the play like she sounds low key. I don't know ultimately with school I feel like a lot of people described themselves as unpopular and then someone else but you were in the winter frolic queen total everyone feels unpopular. I. Think that's really what's going on. She tells Morton basically that like I felt like an outsider. But then when Tina around interviews people that she actually went to school with they're like no people liked her like she was kind of weird she was a little quiet feel like an outsider and still know how to put on the right sweater. Laugh along to the right jokes at the right moments. Tina Brown is also really mean about Diana's intellect. She keeps talking about how she failed a bunch of levels and how she got low grades all these standardized tests the British children have to pass our hating. You know I know it's like just relax it doesn't. It doesn't seem to me like she's all that dumb it seems she's bad at taking tests whatever I about Tina Brown did a great job with all. Tests. So I mean, her personality is coming out at this point..

With CBS up in the air. I'm flying to London to do the Royal. We're working our prime time live special the newsbreaks one thirty. They'd Gayle is elbowing nor is insisting that nor leave CBS this morning. It's so amazing to me that after seven years together that now people would say that you and I have some beef. I have no beef you you have no beef of me, Tina Brown, summed it up very nicely. She said this never happens to men this kind of a cutthroat business that the the reality is it's too great jobs for teen. Great women. She said, and I also think I know that that's true. "Let's hope for that guy to show up sooner rather than. Later. Would you start your career in media? If you are starting today, would you advise young people to take jobs in media one? I think I probably go into documentary making today, I think sometimes the documentary right now, maybe the best way to go about it. Because it it's got more of a chance of getting traction. So maybe that's what I would do today if I was me thirty years ago. Now, my last question is really just you know, what's your best advice for someone who wants to come work for you someone who's showing up in is going to interview with Tina Brown tomorrow. What do you hope that they show up with or don't show up with? I hope they show up with some kind of something that solves the problem for me. You know, sometimes when young people come in for interviews. They spend a lot of time talking about what they want right about. I want to do this job because of this. I want to do this job because of that. And you sometimes they will what are you going to bring me like, what are you gonna do for me? I know what I can do for you. But what can you do for me that is going to make my life easier in some way, if someone says, okay, I've been watching videos of what you're doing. And I think that I see an opening to do this that I could be very helpful with that kind of is the kind of person I'm interested in what's the white space this Tina, thank you so much for being with us today. This is a real pleasure. So fun to talk to you. Thank you. And that's our show for today. Thanks for listening and a big thank you to Tina Brown for joining us. Oh, and one more thing before you go I'd like to ask if you could do is mall favor. If you like what you heard on today's episode. "To to have been a pretext dual memo on the reasons for jim colmey being fired by the present a provide some basis for why trump should fire me and in that memo that you may recall from back in may he recited various transgressions that he said colmey had committed in connection with the investigation of hillary clinton everyone who sentient in the world understands that that really wasn't the reason why del trump fired comey elton key minded at all how hillary clinton was treated in part that's how we got to become the president of the united states himself so ordinarily i think it's a normal question to raise of whether or not somebody who has been involved in something that might be within the purview of what is being investigated by the special council namely whether or not the firing of jim colmey constitutes obstruction of justice if that's one of the things muller's looking at it's a reasonable question to ask i've sort of asked around that question the people who are in a position to complain about it meaning democrats on the hill are not complaining about it because they liked the fact that even though he wrote that memo that people like at the end of the day rod rosenstein did the thing that lots of people wanted in that is the appointment of a you know above board well respected special counsel named robert muller and my guess is and this is just a guess vat through democratic leaders are more worried about who the next person might be which goes to another party a question that if he were to recuse himself is the next person going to be as committed to the neutrality and independence at the special council you know rod rosenstein testified in the last number of days and he said things at pavel were music to the ears of people who want the investigation to go forward democrats and republicans both he said he had seen nothing to indicate that the muller investigation was tarnished and that he had seen no reason why bob moeller should be fired and he didn't have any intention of carrying out that order unless you saw something nefarious so those are all things that suggested rod rosenstein is going to be supportive of mullah continuing his work.

"Whose career is actually helped by speaking out i mean certainly a few actress is now might feel this is a bit of a a moment when to speak out you know actually behooves them but most of the time anyone i know who's ever spoken out it it in the help that career they don't go on to be promoted off to afterwards is not being something that was beneficial that is my guest tina brown she's the former editor of vanity fair and the new yorker and author of a new book called vanity fair diaries i'm so glad we're talking to tina brown this week because she has been an unbelievable influence and presence in the world of journalism particularly magazines for a few decades now she's not afraid to speak her mind she'd been a role model to so many people men and women alike and i think you'll find the conversation fasting tour back to a traditional episode of stay tuned to me sitting in the tiny podcast studio which is what we've done for a long time having come off our first live podcast filmed at the screwball center and why you with his hamanaka show this episode you will not hear the roar of the crowd my apologies okay now it's time for your question hi this is michael steiner from delray beach florida i question it though deputy attorney general rod rosenstein there's been talk start i am recusing himself because of uh and being a witness potentially to the comey firing and also there's been talk suv trump especially mind to fire him would it be reasonable strategic move for him to recuse himself preemptively to stay on are going to fire but also to protect the investigation and could either four points his own successor to the investigation thanks them bench and love the show uh michael that's a great question and there are various parts to your question let me see if i can take them one of the time first as for whether or not rod rosenstein i think it's pronounced rosenstein should recuse himself or does he have a conflict of interest in know my thought has been for a while i think i said this before it's reasonable to think that he might he was involved in the drafting of what i think is widely under.
