"Don't coffee shops have built in movie theaters because kids can come and watch. Tv and the parent can chill out. You know with the ca like no. They don't have it because it's not an efficient use of space. It's not the core business model. It's the cycle time business. So no sorry then. I got i got i got dragged to. Tim hortons a lot by my mom. So i would have appreciated a land center in the tim hortons but i mean maybe that's just me 'cause i did spend a lot of time And i know my mom watches these. I probably would've have the tim hortons eat more money. There are now. She was going to drink her. Tim hortons coffee no matter what john says. Paul said. This is the value of a place to sit. Basically everyone is playing honor of kings in china all the time anyway. So this is a way of differentiating and making cool space to do it. yeah. I don't think it's much more complicated in the on your own or with friends and you get game. Themed rewards remember in china. It's all we chat alley pay based payments and people are getting all kinds of promos rewards through that. That's actually an interesting angle. You know working at sort of into the the cultural and sort of every day fabric. Yeah this is what you said. You're exactly which are now going to promote tencent games into morton's sorry for the run on following sports in china. I think you guys hit on the new. Npa rigs earlier. but i was af k. Jonah curious to get your thoughts on that when you go back and watch it if you do Would love to hear them all right. If taylor's still in here. I have to do this story for him. So i wanna get to it Because it's a razor story and the headline here is faker. Teams up with razor to design and develop gaming peripherals. So maybe the i mean. I'm sure this is maybe not that argued in the league world but the greatest league of legends player of all time collaborating with razor to design a series of gaming referrals including a mouse and mouse pads There they will be sold in the t. one shop in seoul. "Could it be that you know. They know people when they go back home. They'll be hankering. For the you know a tim's double-double like and therefore this this is how you capture them. I i don't know. I think you pair this with an e sports team you make regular appearances autographs ticketed events or signings and there's something fun there. Let me ask this question. Sorry to stay on this fascinated by if enthusiasts gaming announced. We're gonna do you know tim. Hortons a east sports land centers in canada right. Would anyone even think twice about like is such a great idea what anyone question it. No brian i mean less. I wouldn't. I probably would say sort of the same thing about why it has to be with tim hortons but i mean if tim hortons was putting up the capital or whatever then maybe it would make sense deal but it's in canada. It's also like it's it's more equivalent to a starbucks in the sense that people go to sit at a tim. Hortons right. it's not it's not always in and out. They are pretty pleasant places to sit and have a sandwich and a coffee in you know. Yeah but jeff is right the grab go. Business model is the preferred business model for coffee shops. This is weird to me because it says grabbing stay and again like coffee is a great good. If it's high cycle time but how many two dollar. Tim hortons copies. Can you sell to people in the coffee shop. You know like i. I just to me. This is more of a pr plan. An awareness play. I think and maybe an opportunity for tim's to connect with ten cents and figure out if there's other mutual opportunities here. But i don't like this. How do you feel taylor's coming here. Because i like this look at sports arena in walmart. Same idea in a way totally different totally different business model. What is i taught you get people to stick around. They buy more. that's not. This is totally different parallel. That is wouldn't you buy more if you're at tim hortons for four hours again. It's counterpoint. so yes maybe get another two dollar coffee out of someone but that's not worth all the additional real estate in space and expense in maintenance right if you got somebody to stick around at a walmart. Who knows what else they might buy. Walmart's huge in. Its sells everything. And the longer you're in there the more stuff you notice. That's the key innovation and why he open restaurants and it works for businesses that are more experiential event driven again. I think jeff's right.

"I don't know about you but my family loves this time of year for us. It's really all about the food we gather at my grandma's house on six nations for a potluck style christmas eve dinner and every year. We have seafood. Uncle dave brings salmon drenched in maple syrup. My dad make seafood chowder. My cousin allen brings oysters and whoever is holding the venison pepperoni from this past years. Hunt fingers crossed brings a lot because it disappears quickly. We drink way too much. T eat way too much food and make way too much fun of each other. That is our tradition. And i'm going to miss it this year. I guess we'll just have to share a cup of tea and make fun of each other over zoom while aida shrimping alone today on the show how indigenous folks are celebrating family traditions and making meaningful connections in all kinds of innovative ways off the wall verse. They got off three walls. That's the sound of a carnival at women kong nursing home staff at the long term care facility in Mccown first nations are finding creative ways to lift the spirits of its elders. During the coronavirus pandemic the nursing home recently went viral online after posting photos of residents deer hunting with nerf guns. Cbs's gonna see. Oh dear is here to tell us more about the creative ways. The staff is keeping spirits up during these challenging times. Welcome to the show going to see you. Thanks for having me okay. So my first question is nerf guns. Yes so each week staff Akon nursing homes drives have a full calendar activities for its residents were primarily first nations for manitou island. One of those recent activities was deer hunting but not actual deer hunting stops. Set up a mini forest of christmas trees dressed up endear costumes and gave the residents some nerf guns photos as you can imagine went viral on facebook so they come up with this idea. One of the residents that he was experiencing hunting fever so the staff wanted to come up with a solution. Emily barnes is the recreation manager at the nursing home here. She is explaining more about the approach. She takes when organizing activities. Anything how much. He missed actually being avid hunter. Every year and how this time of year is kind of hard because he felt like he was truly missing out on something important. I am although the person centered approach and we cater to the individual interests of our residents The community that we come from hunting providing for their families is such an important part of life. So we try to incorporate everything that was meaningful before they came here. So i wrapped my brain and the nice lurking in the middle of the night. I thought we're going to be decorating for christmas shortly. So we own about ten christmas trees. And i thought why not set them up so i So i headed into down. And i went and i found some of the your hat on and so what kinds of activities. What other kinds of activities have they done in the last few weeks emily. Inner team have held photo shoots for residents. They had a lip sync battle and carnival. Fast food chain. Tim hortons opened on manitou island in october. The elders were able to join in the festivities too with the drive through cart serving coffee and donuts import for elders. To be a part of it. 'cause you when you think like what are your grandparents do in the afternoon a lot of them. They drink coffee. They go to tim. Horton's they meet up with their friends. And so i didn't want to miss out on this important milestone. That happened on our island. You sign sweet. We teamed up with tim. Horton and I was very fortunate. My husband's a carpenter. So he was able to make us the structure a Yeah we're able to still have them have their cup of coffee and be a part of the community celebration though. We didn't have to miss out. So what impact has this approach to recreation head on the residence in the nursing homes administrator cheryl was aiba win peltier said these activities have been so important because of the increased measures and restrictions currently in place because of the coronavirus pandemic and residents aren't the only ones enjoying it. Photos and videos of every activity or shared on social media cheryl says that these activities received tons of feedback from people across canada and the united states some joining in with their own deer hunting activities. The biggest thing i take away is other. Residents are enjoying activity we actually shared from. I think it was a home in Ohio they actually posted a video and they did the activity further residents there and i thought wow like homes are enjoying that activity and do they look like they're joining it just as much as our residents were residents have definitely noticed the attention. Their home has been receiving to this was one of the priceless reactions to the viral deer hunting activity and today. I actually just saw an elders large and aquasnap post photos of their own nerf gun hunting activity too

They are going to be using reusable containers that customers can return. Tim Hortons is doing this as well. And basically what you are going going to do. This is starting in Toronto locations, but they are Planning on expanding it, they would customers are going to get the option to pay a deposit to receive their meal and reusable containers and cups and then upon returning the containers, customers would get their deposit back. "In twenty eleven in Alabama law firm sued fast food chain Taco Bell for dishonest business practices claiming that Taco Bell's seasoned filling couldn't be called beef under USDA standards because they had it tested and it was only thirty five percent beef. The rest was oats and other fillers Taco bell pulled out all the stops to refute the allegation at a cost of more than three million dollars including parody of Saturday morning superhero cartoon show that they had already for reasons super delicious ingredients force fighting. Baron VAUGHN bland. My Name's Moxy. And this is your brain on facts. Researching conspiracy theories and urban legends. Always gets a little wild like. Did you know that people are die hard? Tim Hortons fans because the Canadian version of Dunkin donuts spikes their coffee with highly addictive nicotine. Of course they don't but that doesn't stop people from believing. It will be skipping over. Stories like the fingertip and Wendy's Chili. That was a failed extortion attempt or the mouse in the mountain dew which PepsiCo defended themselves against by proving that the mouse would have dissolved. Let's start with the biggest name and fast food. The Mac Daddy if you will. Mcdonald's easily holds the records for the most urban legends and conspiracy yarns spun around a restaurant. The topic has its own wikipedia. Page and these. Well predate the unduplicated experiment. That was Morgan. Spurlock super size me listeners. Of a certain demographic may remember the Jimbo. You deserve a break today reaching them about the same time as the rumor that McDonald's stretched their hamburger meat out with Nice. Cheap ground up worms. If you've been online for more than a few minutes. In the past decade he will have seen a picture of a factory machine extracting fat tube of Pink Mush or pink slime as the caption frames. It say hello to mechanically separated chicken. It's all fast food. Chicken is made from things like chicken. Nuggets patties also. The process frozen chicken in the stores is made from it. Basically the entire chicken is smashed and pressed recieve bones is guts. All it comes out looking like this and there's more because it's crawling with bacteria it'll be washed ammonia soaked in it actually then because it tastes gross. It'll be re flavored artificially then because it's weirdly pink it'll be died with artificial color but hey at least it tastes good right. There are little bits they are that are nearly true mechanically separated meat is a staple ingredient in ready made frozen and fast foods but it's made from meat cuts not whole carcasses while beef producers commonly treat meat products with small amounts of ammonium side as an anti microbial agent and assessing in a high volume facility meat and poultry processors. Don't soak the meat in ammonia. They treat it with the gas apart from the included items being wrong. There are a lot of things that are missing. Like the fact that McDonald's stopped using mechanically separated chicken in two thousand and three mechanically separated. Beef was banned in two thousand four due to concerns about Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy Aka mad cow disease and the pink. Slime in the picture is probably what one beef industry magazine writer called. Ammonium treated lean beef trimmings not even chicken at all another glaring omission in the claim. There is nothing in the picture to identify that as a McDonald's facility. Mcdonald's went on the defensive showing how nuggets were actually made and that the mushed up chicken while not especially pleasing to the eye at no point looks like pink. Slime washed down those nuggets with a milkshake. Well there's no milk in that milkshake. There's no dairy of any kind. That's why the menu says shakes and not milkshakes. At least that's the rumor. What are they used instead to make it so creamy pureed cow eyeballs or maybe a little microscopic styrofoam balls for filler or lard or potatoes or seaweed or ground up feathers there are strict definitions food labelling and while. Mcdonald's shakes can't be labeled milkshakes in some areas because they don't contain straight up milk they do contain milk via the soft serve ice cream that's used to make them and they don't contain any of the other things save one. Their ice cream is made from milk. Sugar cream of Corn Syrup and various common preservatives and thinners McDonald's self-serve does contain one item from the Urban Legend List Seaweed specifically encourage Heenan. A safe natural common ingredient bonus. Fact if your food or drink is pink or red in color. Check The label for coaching. Neil a type of beetle whose ground up bodies have been used as a food color for centuries. I'm not suggesting to avoid it unless you're trying to keep kosher. I just think it's interesting. It's probably only listed as natural color. Anyway say you bought more food than you're able to eat in one sitting and you left the rest on the counter for a few weeks. Hey we all get busy. Thanks to all the artificial ingredients in manmade chemicals in boldface defiance of the natural order of things that McDonald's food won't rot. Lots of people have made videos showing the food remaining virtually unchanged after days and even weeks. This is a little bit true but mostly false in case any specify that and not for the reasons you think according to Dr Keith Warner Program Director at the University of Gulf's Department of Food Science and Quality Assurance essentially the microbes. That cause rotting are a lot like ourselves in that they need water nutrients warmth and timed grow. If we take one or more of those elements away then. Microbes cannot grow and spoil food in the example of the McDonald's hamburger. The patty loses water in the form of steam during cooking the BUN is made out of bread and toasting it reduces the amount of moisture this means that after preparation hamburger is fairly dry. When left out open in a room? There's further water loss as the humidity within most buildings is around forty percent so in the absence of moisture or high humidity. The Burger simply dries out rather than rots so no moisture no rot. It's the inverse of the reason. Why the bathroom is the only room in your house where you're locked in an eternal struggle with microbes like mold and mildew speaking of moisture. Who could use a tasty beverage right about now? How about a new COQ? Don't know what I'm talking about. That means one of two things. You're under the age of thirty or the most devious and ingenious marketing effort of all time succeeded or failed either way. The absence of evidence is not evidence of absence. Set would want you to know. That coke created new coq to cover the switch from sugar to corn Syrup to mask the removal of the last remaining coca derivatives or because people would hate it and demand more of what had been renamed co Classic. Take your pick. Pepsi had an effective ad campaign with the Pepsi. Challenge a blind taste test where lifelong coke fans found out they actually preferred the taste of Pepsi. Coke replicated the challenge in private and found the same thing. So in nineteen eighty-five they reformulated coke to be sweeter and put it out as new coq hip trendy with it and now including TV spots with the supposedly CGI. Max Headroom. You can hear more about in episode ninety six. Do not adjust your set. People hated new COQ. The heated the very idea of coping changed. There were letter writing campaigns thousands of calls a day and people. Hoarding original coke. Were boycotting the brand altogether independent bottlers even sued Coca Cola for lost revenue. It was all over the news all the late night talk shows. You couldn't buy that much publicity for. Could you? People began to speculate that. Coca-cola had launched new coq knowing that people would hate it that it would make people want to buy original coke and that everyone would be talking about it. They created it to fail. This isn't as far fetched a notion as you might think a decade or so later when Pepsi Launched Crystal Pepsi. Can you hear that Van Hagar Song Coke Launch? Crystal Tab? Tab was the first Diet Soda and even though Crystal Pepsi wasn't Diet People inflated the two and Crystal Pepsi went out faster than Jenkins and plastic choker necklaces as for the new coq debacle being a deliberate marketing ploy then company president. Donald Cove said some. Cynics will say that we planned the whole thing. The truth is we're not that dumb and we're not that Smart

"Time you stop at Tim Hortons Hey Gayle Timmy ho's breakfast okay explain this to me again how does what essentially amounts to a discarded centers of don't know it's going to become hugely popular item on their own originally launched in nineteen seventy six attendance Tim bits are now served over thirty five varieties and a regularly as big a draw as Tim Hortons normal donuts well they have the you know the Dunkin donuts has those right yeah you gotta there Munchkins Munchkins I mean there are basically the same yeah the sun about the temp and there's the Tim Hortons difference well to Tim Horton's is I mean the donuts they're fantastic you member you're too young ever mentioned you ever remember wind chills but the hell's a windchill don't don't change okay Winchell's donut seems to have one right by my school my high school Luther north you know like Irving in now Minard or something like that used to go there every morning before before school good donuts man Winchell had good donuts I imagine yeah I'm I'm partial to all my home town don't it does I mean there's there's a few of them out there but country donuts around fourteen in the lake can't beat it I grew up a half a block away from the Dunkin donuts so I had a lot of non us when I was a kid I did I mean I literally throw like a block away from within just about a block away from a Dunkin donuts still there to it's the one in Addison in Lincoln right next to the breeder house yeah ho yeah yeah the breeder house rules whether so all right.
Chicken War Spurs Popeyes Sales
"Let's start with the restaurant. Industry and in particular restaurant brands international which is the decidedly unsexy name of the parent company of Burger King. Popeye's and Tim Hortons Fortensky fourth quarter profits and revenue for restaurant brands slightly higher than expected and all of the credit one hundred percent of the credit. Go to Popeye's yeah. There's no question because when we talk about same store sales and I think it was either on this show on Motley fool money last week we're talking about AAA which put up same store sales growth of thirteen percent and I said what most restaurants would kill for that. Can I interest you in same. Aim store sales growth of thirty eight percent. Yeah thirty eight percent that looks comical like when you look at the chart as you and I both did this morning owning. It looks ridiculous but now we know what that spicy chicken sandwiches worth well and if if you know if you listen to Ron and roses. Scathing adding scathing review it was not a good review. You wonder how many people are going to actually give that sandwich. Try Not I know I'm not I haven't tried it yet and I don't know that I actually will part of that is just because I'm probably too lazy in an overly like eating a lot of fast food but I do feel like this For for restaurant brains. This really does feel like they're McDonald's breakfast moment. I mean it was a little bit less I think it was a little bit less expected. I mean they they certainly planned this sandwich obviously I don't know that they even really expected the results that they're getting but you you take what you can get in this line of work because it's not always easy to come across and I think the big question for Restaurant Brands is candy. Sustain it because I mean yes they are diversified and then. They have have Popeye's in Tim. Hortons in Burger King. But this really is. I mean the the the growth is coming from this chicken sandwich and so the question is is is that sustainable and and we don't know that I mean this it's kind of like that greater investing lesson and no pun intended. But you're not looking to put all of your eggs in one basket in this case. You don't WanNa put all of your chicken sandwiches in one basket in. I think when you look at restaurant brands I mean. This really is a Burger King. Business First and foremost I mean Burger. King is responsible for close to seventy percents companies. Total revenue in Popeye's is actually the smallest revenue generator of the three but that said The laggard really his. Is Tim. Hortons and that to me is the bigger question because I. I don't have any doubt that they can continue to perform well with Popeye's even if the chicken sandwich doesn't bring this explosive growth going forward and it probably won't but it it'll probably do pretty well. It's been received well because a lot of people think it's really good The question for MEES. What are they going to do with Tim? Hortons because Tim Hortons is really. This is kind of like the Pizza Hut. This is like the conversation we had about yum brands where wear it was yet another quarter of KFC and Taco bell are doing just fine. Thank you very much and Pizza Hut. Just I'm almost speechless because I'm genuinely surprised that when Pizza Hut was handed the opportunity that they were of Papa. John's and all of the controversy around John Schnatter in the NFL deal and the NFL deal. They still can't make that concept concept work no. I think you probably could make the argument this point. Now that you know Tim Horton's could prep for a spin off in pizza. Hut could prep for a spin off. You put those two together you know what their ticker would be Chris L. A. G. Because those two together will lag the market for quarters in years to come in. I don't know why that is on the pizza. Hut Pizzas one of those things. I mean domino's recognized a while back. Hey listen we're not. We're not selling a lot of stuff because apparently our food in that great. So let's make good food in and for whatever reason Tim Hortons doesn't quite resonating as well and maybe it is. Maybe it is a geography thing. It's it's certainly not a brand that I think has much opportunity opportunity south of the border. Right I mean when when you bring that thing into the United States just don't think it's GonNa do What it could possibly do in Canada but the calms of minus four point point three percent? Now we'll say management attributed some of that to their rewards program. They're essentially investing a lot in this rewards program to stoke traffic bring people back in in and I appreciate that that makes sense. We see a lot of these restaurants. Do it and and starbucks I think is one of the companies out there who really wrote wrote the book on how to do it. Well a Tim Hortons. Maybe these are. Just some of the lumps that come with investing in that a but I it's it's taking a little a bit of a hit in the short run for. Hopefully it'll more long term sustainability that remains to be seen whether it's really gonNA work out. I'm not that optimistic. Whereas I feel like with Burger working at Popeye's there is a more universal geographical reach where people people are going to probably flocked to those brands a little bit more consistently So for me. Burger King and Popeye's strength their. Tim Hortons a lot of questions. They're going to continue to make investments the rewards program but I mean this is a company that has some big aspirations with somewhere in the neighborhood. Twenty th at twenty seven thousand total restaurants. Today they're aim is is for forty thousand restaurants in the next eight to ten years in so you got to believe that most of that is going to come on the Burger King Popeye's side and and and it doesn't We very well may see them make another acquisition. Bring another brand under their umbrella so to speak that remains to be seen but yeah I mean for all of the success. That Popeye's has had burger king. I get it Tim Hortons is the real big question mark and I don't know what they do to fix that to to go go back to something you said earlier regarding Ken. Popeye sustain this. No no anyone. Who's looking at this thinking boy? Can they do this every quarter no there. You'd you'd like to see maybe not thirty percent growth but you'd like to see given the comstock. They had a year ago. Then yeah you'd like to see some double double digit growth. But when we get to twelve months from now honestly if they can do. Single low single digit growth off of thirty eight percent. COP bumped than fantastic. I think the other restaurant that has to be looking very closely at this. Is McDonald's and Chris Kempinski. Who's been CEO for? Maybe almost three months. Now it's going to be interesting to see where they go with their chicken chicken sandwich and what they're able to do with well we. We have gotten some boots on the ground research on that already and apparently they've got some work to do on that on that front. I mean that's a really competitive space. I mean who would have figured we'd be sitting here just shining such a light on the chicken sandwich. I mean this really has become front and Center for the Quick Quick Service Restaurant Industry. Hasn't I mean but you know the the business opportunity for McDonald's and everyone else who's not chick-fil-a is the chick-fil-a is closed on Sundays Sundays. Yeah Yeah you can get just you know. You don't need to get all of their business. You just need to get some of their biggest need some of it and and and again I think. Go to your point about the chicken sandwich with Popeye's no it's not sustainable but it seems to be a good product wrong grosses reviews. Be Damned. I I do think that it would be really neat to see them. Come up with something like that. For the Burger. King side of the business that would be extremely meaningful because again a- as great of a success as the chicken sandwich with Popeye's has been it's still the smallest part of the business in that has to be taken into consideration ration-. This is a burger king story first and foremost so I bet you management is in a room somewhere trying to figure out. How do we capture the lightning in a bottle? Four Burger King and maybe they thought the impossible opera had that Had that potential doesn't seem like it's Gonna I mean and I don't know what it is but it does seem like no matter what it's going to revolve around chicken in some way shape or form.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to 'step back' from senior royals
"We've got huge news. News coming from the Royal Family. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are stepping back from their duties within the monarchy. Yeah instead of Brexit. This is MEG's is it. This is something we've never ever seen before in our lifetime. I mean yes only time. I can see true Maggie. See I I take such a historic at global view. I'm like quantum leap of gossip. I go to other times but Prince Korean Meghan Markle have basically quit the royal family. There was a report out in the Sun. That said That they were going going to be in talks in the coming days with Queen Elizabeth and Prince Charles about maybe taking a step back maybe even relinquishing their titles. But later the same day that the report came out they just popped it on instagram. That they're out. They broke broke up with the queen what they posted on instagram from their official Duke and Duchess of Sussex Account after many months of reflection and internal discussions as we have chosen to make a transition this year in starting to carve out a progressive new role within this institution. We intend to step back as senior members of the Royal Family and work to to become financially independent while continuing to fully support Her Majesty the Queen Financially Independent are going to start acting again. Maybe I mean I mean. Prince Harry got thirteen million dollars When he turned thirty from a from a trust so he and his his brother Prince William both got thirteen million dollars so at least he has that in the bank but there are some questions about if they're going to be living in North America And in the UK you know will they still need a full security detail. WHO's GonNa pay for that? WHO's GonNa pay for this life in both places so now they have a family? And you know so I think there are a lot of questions about whether UK tax payers are still going to have to pick up the TAB for any elements of their life or they're just going fully rogue. There are so many questions and it sounds like even the Queen has questions because a few hours after after they released this break-up statements The Palace released one. That's discussions with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex are at an early stage. We understand their desire. Take a different approach but these are complicated issues. That will take time to work through. That's a very much like remember. I'm the Queen. I am your grandmother and I will tell you what's up. The writing was on the wall. I mean this is pretty extreme. But you know Harry and Meghan didn't spend Christmas with the royal family. They spend it with her mom right then. They spent six weeks in Canada and then of course there was all the negative press surrounding her. Which Harry fell was unfair? It caused this very testy relationship between Prince Harry and Meghan Markle and the press in the UK and it. I guess it was all leading up to this ultimately walking away from the royal family. I guess you figure. Maybe he's thinking. Hey you know you guys treated my mom like crap. I'm I'm not really in line to be King of England. He's like pretty far removed from thrown in in lineage. And he's like what do I need this for. I've got my thirteen million in and I'm good amount and something else you've been reporting on. Is this alleged. Feud between Prince Harry and Prince William you know for a while there. We were calling William Kate Harry and Meghan the Fab four and they look so great when they stepped out together and so happy and you know in recent months. It's been all that other not getting along along. And we just published a story that a friend of Prince Harry and Prince William was on television talking about how the rift is very real and and it's still ongoing and I can only imagine how it's escalated. Now that Meghan Harrier kind of like you guys can handle it from here. We are good it also be interesting to see where they wind up in North America because obviously they have this Canadian connection They could have been Canada which just seems also like a little boring for you. You know some royals. I mean. She shot her. TV show suits in Canada. So you know I guess she could get some acting work still up there when Harry could become like a manager of a Tim Hortons but you know the other thing that could make sense since they left the door open to North America were to do if they're doing a full Lebron and they go to like La as well. I mean the sky's the limit if they go to la they could just take over the town she could relaunch the tag her blog her lifestyle blog. Remember that named after a low. Yeah that's a great idea. Yeah when she was on suits she was making four hundred fifty thousand dollars a year and I was on a USA cable. Show so I mean she does have the potential. I guess if she wanted to go back to acting with her new fame theme I mean I don't know she could do bigger projects than cable shows and probably make quite a bit of

That's pretty smart to close the digital divide in detroit any more than just wirz from american public media. This is marketplace tech demystifying the digital economy. I'm jed kim in for molly would not having solid access to the internet is like competing in a three legged race tied to a cow looking for work. Most applications are online need to check your bank account. Pay bills dell's check medical records do homework. It's all easier if you're online and getting a lot harder if you're not detroit is one of the least connected big american cities according to the national digital inclusion alliance less than half of homes. There have broadband internet that means hundreds of thousands of detroiters stand stand on the losing side of a growing digital divide. It's judge edmunds job to help. Detroiters get online and so them why they need to. He's he's the city's first director of digital inclusion and he says the problem is in just infrastructure. We have several internet service providers and if you actually look at the provider data ninety eight to one hundred percent of detroit is covered with internet access. Sorry issue isn't necessarily internet access internet adoption meaning. What are the bears the technology adoption that are causing detroiters not to take advantage of getting into the home costing one of the big barriers. We look at poverty. Poverty directly exacerbates the digital divide something like the digital divide. That's maybe not well understood by. You know a lot of people a lot of times. When there's this kind of different understanding that there's often like a different language that's understood like is there any example of things that people say that somebody on the other side of the divide just wouldn't get yes when i was on focus groups with public housing residents in cleveland and we kept talking about applications like oh you know download an app download it up and <hes> people were thinking i was talking about job applications and that's such as light example but we've just taken technology and integrated it in and we get it but people don't this task does not sound easy and not cheap. What are you in the city gonna do to expand access us. I've identified five hundred sixty one free wifi sites all throughout the city of detroit that make money to do. I mean i'll be maybe my salary went to knowing. It and these aren't municipal networks. These are your mcdonald's or tim hortons that random nonprofit on the corner that church that has it if you go to any neighborhood where there's a lot of children and there's no library present and there's mcdonalds there. Those kids are going to mcdonald's to do their homework and i'm not saying that the city is saying go to mcdonalds and do your homework rather. It's very interesting to see the way that public wifi and free. Wi fi is driving people to certain places. I would say what's looming over. All of this is the fact that the census next year is going online and so when i have residents namely my older residents gordon were like no. I don't be like this. Are you know i don't feel comfortable during this. What are the implications around the sense. Uh being counted. There's a cast value that it every single resident has mike figure wrong but i believe every resident <hes> it's worth eighteen hundred dollars a year to the census so if you're not counted managing ask them locations around that joshua edmonds is the director of digital inclusion for the city of detroit. If you wanna see the city's digital divide on a map the university of michigan again put together an atlas of homes without computers without broadband with only a smartphone and just with cellular data. I think they think that oh well even if i tip shitty. This person's still making their minimum minimum might be like next to nothing especially in a company like door dashes literally taking the wage away from the driver and i mean granted we should abolish tipping altogether and just pay everybody everybody living wages but while we're still ideally yes we're in between place. If you are tipping for services rendered the whole tips you go to the person providing the service top one percent or drive. No that's pretty being well. Well, you've made a mistake and bringing me on today because Alibaba is one of the companies that I watched, but there's also a handful of other Chinese companies that have been reporting and we'll continue to report the next couple of weeks. There were earnings that we've seen Alibaba included have been outstanding in the market has hammered them. In fact, Alibaba not being down today is impressive within itself. So I'll eat Baba's kind of trepidation response by the market. I don't think has anything to do with their earnings guidance their business. It's really the macro situation right now. There is nothing. They could have said that would nothing within reason that they could have said that would make the market response. Very positively. But the fact that this is such a big company growing revenue fifty one percents. And they're seeing such an amazing growth, Alibaba cloud. I mean they really are doing everything. So we have the cloud business. Their management now says they're serving fifty percent of China's a rated businesses through their cloud business, and that's actually much smaller than I think it can be over the long term. So this growth to me is just the beginning, you'll see that seventy percent of the increase in active users were actually from less developed cities as well. So they continue to expand within the country and their partnerships are really starting to pay off Allie, Pai tau they push through thirty percent of Alamos orders. That's Chinese food delivery. So the fact that Alibaba is so spread out across the country in terms of business segments. In terms of revenue, just means that this is an amazing company and the markets, kind of sad response doesn't mean much to me. So it sounds like you think this is a buying opportunity because because the stock I mean. To widen. The lens a little bit. I mean this is a stock that's I think it's up about thirty percent. Maybe over the past year, or so, like, it's, it's had a pretty decent run. But, but it sounds like you think there's a lot of runway head of it. Well, here's a good testament to that runway Yoku, which is you could call it Chinese YouTube. It's Alibaba's video streaming website. They're still producing movies and TV shows, and guessing they're selling it to Netflix. So the biggest one in China right now I think I forget the name of the but, but it dropped on Netflix today. So if you're interested in going Netflix is probably going to be one of the first videos that starts playing for you. It's a Chinese drama that they purchased from Alibaba through Yoku. So the idea that this company has tapped out growth is a terrible misunderstanding of all the different levers Alibaba's still has to pull in their business. Let's move onto another of your areas of expertise and that. The marijuana industry which you cover here at the full couple of companies reporting to till Ray reporting first-quarter results sales were up, but their costs were also up. So their loss was definitely bigger than expected and Aurora cannabis. Seemed like it had a pretty good third quarter till race. Stock getting hit a little bit Aurora cannabis last time. I checked was moving slightly positive safe to say. Roar is if not the biggest player in this space, maybe the best known. Yes. Definitely till right and Aurora to the best known players in the space. You notice that revenues growth in general, is extremely strong in both these companies till raise up almost two hundred percent but it's only twenty three million. So it just reminder to people who are interested in this space that these companies bite their popularity and despite how well no. And they are they're still extremely small and. It's projected that till right? Being one of the best known companies only has about a five percent market share in Canada. And that might sound to somebody like, wow. They have so much room to grow. But that's just a testament to how fragmented the market is. And both of these companies are increasingly unprofitable, they're going to need to raise capital to continue operations, and that should not miss out on investors investors should be perfectly aware of the fact that share shareholder, dilution in these companies is not just a word. We like to say about why we don't like them. It's, it's a real threat. It's a real threat to people who are buying these companies so despite strong revenue growth. And you're if you're interested in looking into the cannabis base, there's a lot of other companies, a lot of insularity plays that you can get into that have a lot less risk and a lot less exposure than companies like Aurora or till Ray that being said partnerships are really key for about these companies moving forward. They are big players are well known player. So it's going to be important for them to continue to make partnerships. And they're both doing a good job of executing on that. So go back twenty five years or so you had a bunch of companies that made desktop computers, and they're all competing with one, another part of the reason Microsoft grew was because they weren't interested in making the computer they were interested in just being the software inside the computer hearing, you talk about the cannabis industry. It makes me think that investors shouldn't be looking at the growers, which are the obvious sort of first place to look, but instead, the companies the picks and shovels, companies, if you will that are looking to service, any of these companies, that are producing the marijuana, like what's one or two companies that you think sort of fit that space of they're not growing. They're maybe not as well known as till Ray and Aurora but these are worth keeping an eye on. Well, one company that is an active recommendation in marijuana masterpiece. Hear that? I'm a huge fan of is actually. N wave. N wave is interesting. It's been around for a while. They're dehydrates. This is like, I think it is the oven company, but I have a simple mind. So they're actually pretty well known in the cannabis space. But people think of them as just that the oven company, they sell dehydrates. That's kind of misunderstanding of their business model very early on the company figured out that they're not going to really make a lot of money by just selling this equipment to companies like till Ray and Aurora, what they're going to make money by doing selling subscriptions licensing. And so this aren't a license, these giving exclusive rights to use his equipment to companies like Tillery and that provides ongoing recurring safer revenue. So if you like a company like till right, a good investment is actually, probably in wave which is relatively insulated because they don't have the risk that Tori has in terms of actually growing having direct exposure to the price of marijuana, which some people argue is a commodity instead, they have predictable stable growing revenue. Well still. Providing some exposure to the space safe to assume that this is one of those industries that investors should think of in terms of the more volatile end of their portfolio the higher risk, and the reason I asked that is because I was just looking at the fifty two week range for till Ray fifty to three hundred dollars a share a low of twenty dollars a share that is one hell of a roller coaster, the hype cycle is real, and we've seen it a million times over and about every industry, you can imagine. I think three D printing probably comes to mind. So nobody wants to be buying three D printing at its very peak and same can be true for marijuana. The difference is, is that in the marijuana industry, icy strong underlying demand. So that's why I feel comfortable investing a lot of these companies that being said, you have to recognize that the reason they're so hotly valued right now is because the hype is extremely strong, and it's not a matter of if we see marijuana pullback. It's a matter of win. We see a marijuana pullback. So if you're investing in companies in the marijuana space, do not just by Pierre play companies, you are setting yourself up for disaster. We should be doing is taking a basket approach taking a long-term view buying companies that maybe are pureplays but combining them with companies that operate in the marijuana space that will see less of a pullback win the marijuana industry as a whole continues to fall restaurant Brands International having their investor day today. This is the parent company of Burger King Tim Hortons Popeye's, one thing out of the day that caught my attention was Tim. Hortons is going to be adding beyond meet up shins to their menu. That was come. I attended for two reasons. One just that had happened to the win. Tim Hortons was looking for plant based meat substitutes. They didn't go with impossible foods, which there, you know. Which Burger King has been doing with the test of the impossible Walker. So clearly Tim Hortons, if anyone was wondering, oh to all of these restaurants under the restaurant Brands International brand. Are they all operating independently? Yeah, they absolutely are. But I'm curious where you see this space going because I this is also a day or two removed from impossible foods outing. They've raised another three hundred million dollars in venture financing. I think the total that they've raised now is somewhere in the neighborhood of seven hundred fifty million dollars. It seems like

"Donuts this morning to your favorite, Tim Hortons location hoops. They went by the car. Yeah. And we need to figure today. Literally, the twin cities based Tim Hortons are now above is Ville, and I think this might have happened yesterday. But the news came out today that most of these locations are now officially. And we don't know why. But we have some ideas. So we kinda need to get to the bottom of this first of all Dina, Tim Hortons is I recall when they came here and people were there were certain people were like. We're getting hit Horton's is exciting. And we were like, whoa. What's Tim Horton? They were like those donuts the best coffee, and then they got here. And we were like, it just seems like honestly, I have not been to Tim Hortons. Now, I think we're going to get all those people that are like. I am glad it is. But I I never got a chance to see it or to experience somewhere. Yeah. But what I will say is to me. It just seemed like kind of a Dunkin donuts kind of experience with maybe some less options as a Dunkin donuts experience so Dunkin donuts light, perhaps we'll call it. And what's funny about this story about all of these twin cities locations disappearing? This week is that last week. I was we were driving home from dinner, and we were going down one stretch of east lake where there is a Tim Hortons yet. And I remember very distinctly driving by thinking. Wow, there's a Tim Hortons there, and I've never been to ones and people go to important and also it's just weird that there's one on east lake street because there's a lot going on down there. And I think of like a Tim Hortons being a place where you want to jump in real quick at a coffee and a Donut and run out right now, like a destination. Like like, oh, I can't wait to go to Tim Horton's to get their Donut holes. What were their Donut holes called again? Yeah. People have the best Tim bets Donut hole kind of. 'cause we now people are going to complain whatever we don't have to stay on because we don't know this locker. Let's get back to the mystery at hand mystery at hand is all the sudden fourteen locations across the metro shuttered doors. Reporters were like and people are like sorry. We got close. We just lost our jobs. They didn't tell anybody. There is no heads up employees were told to shudder the locations. Now, here's what we do know. So those locations are owned by. I don't know if all of them, but a significant number of the ones that are in the metro were owned by this a franchisee by the name of Tim min Inc. Which obviously means like Tim Hortons Minnesota. And apparently there were some disputes between Tim min Inc and the head honchos over a Tim Hortons headquarters. Tim Hortons is from right. And we don't know what the nature of the tension betwixt them while we have an idea. So apparently this all goes back to some disputes. They had in fact, there was a lawsuit filed in 2017 where Tim Hortons accused Tim of not paying their required franchise payments, and also Tim and apparently had complained that Tim Hortons the headquarters people's were price gouging that they were requiring franchisees to buy certain. Because like when your franchise you have to buy certain things, you have to have this in your store, if you're going to be a Tim Hortons, let's say Tim bits. Right. So they were alleging that whatever these required products where were being overpriced by headquarters such that. They had no choice, but to overpay for these things. So that's what the franchisees. Were complaining about. So there were disputes interesting. And when you talk to the headquarters when reporters talk to headquarters they were like. It's really an unfortunate than the franchisee decided to just close shut down. Because you know, that's not the way we would do things. But because there's you know, a fractious between them they're not willing to talk about it. So again, you don't really kinda know exactly what's going on. But the bottom line is the franchisee, whomever. He she is just literally shut everything down one day. Okay. That is suspicious, and then you got to feel bad for all the people who tear point lost their jobs court link of an eye fourteen. And what's really weird is that they're apparently been some sort of agreement to have like over. I think two hundred eighty locations yet more than two hundred eighty locations in Minnesota with like over a specific period of time of which they already opened fourteen. So this was like a long term strategy, and for whatever reason they just decided to shut her down. I wonder if that like leaves, you know, I'm sure that there's an opportunity because the buildings they're standing. I mean could another. Franchisee come in and scoop up, and you know, that's all very good says shame. I don't know anything about business, but I do. I think you, and I might be about to say the same thing. Well, I was just going to say first of all is anybody missing the to Morton's. Yeah. I'm not again feel bad for the people who lost their jobs, not missing the Tim Hortons. But think now main either should opportunity for another franchise to make its way into town. Well, the one that we've always asked for for years is a waffle house. Thank you. I don't know that the Tim Hortons is big enough to put in a waffle house. But tick tock clock is ticking. We've been waiting for a decade for these waffle dumb. Waffle house. Just one I'll start with just one sunny at central have you ever been to a waffle house? No. I haven't been nice to have something other than like a pancake house. House is not just waffles. It's not just pancakes, its burgers. It's pancakes. It's waffles. It's a treasure. It's just it's a trick like old school Griddle cooking like cannery. Yeah. Like a diner? Like, you got Mel in the backflip and things on Griddle you, oh, they got hashbrowns with all sorts of different ways. You can get them. Like that. We don't there aren't like I need that kind of breakfast lunch. -i joint. Now, I know people will take this opportunity to tell us the half dozen places in the state of Minnesota that are kinda like waffles, and I want you to continue to do that. Because we love hearing from listeners just know that we literally just want a waffle like eight you can tell me about something that's like a waffle house, and I'll still say, but I just wanna waffle like, I almost would spend my retirement savings on opening a waffle house franchise almost we because I'm not really going to do that. But in case it goes belly up, but waffle house, but who wouldn't want to? I mean, just take on the block and around the corner for them if they if they made sure they had vegan options to oh, see we can do that. Sure. I'm telling you this this. That's what is is. Maybe we'll get Meghan Markle speaking making Marco. Yeah. Because she's. Eating dairy free. But speaking of the vegan thing that impossible burger, which Sanni is obsessed with the impossible burger, which there are fifty locations of Burger King's throughout the state of Missouri. Which are currently serving impossible burger it won't get here. Probably till the end of the year. But it's coming. What I was gonna say is their stock the company that makes the impossible burger shot through the roof this week. And so if that is literally were things going f-, why do you remember when we heard about the impossible burger, and we were like this is dumb. This is gonna taste like crap. It looks cool. But it's like a party trick. Now, I've heard of seventy people who've tried this impossible burger visit really good. I I had to pause several times this be beef. It's I had to pause several times, you're lying. This can't be veggie base. They can't they can't. Oh, good. Again, I've heard people say this, and it's cures the caveat. It's not necessarily healthy impossible. It's just it's just not enough beef. Yeah. And so that lends itself to a lot of benefits not only in the health arena, but mostly in the environmental arena. So it's a good thing for a number of reasons. Most important thing is that it allegedly tastes real good. So I saw it on a menu one time. And I thought well, now's my chance, and I almost ordered it. But then I thought what if I get it? And it's terrible. I wasted a meal on it. Do they have them at white castle? They I feel like they did not going to be the same one. That's at a slider. Yes. Which is going to like the one. Okay. I like brewery big one in the end also to anno- this helped that the Bray was on point. Well, that's the thing burger. If you go to impossible foods and possible foods the one that makes the impossible burger if you go to their websites. You can actually search for locations of the impossible. So all right. When we come back on the Colleen and Bradley show, speaking of food, which it seems like we always are it is Friday, and we are going to try something that is off are normally previously diets because it's a cheap day after this on my talk one zero seven one, oh what fun on Thursday morning. "Com slash podcast. I'm Marco werman. This is the world if you know, Tim, Horton's, you know, they are to Canada what Dunkin donuts is to us here in New England. Tim Horton himself was a famous hockey player, but the king of this Canadian coffee and Donut empire was a man named Ron Joyce. Joyce died yesterday aged eighty eight he grew up poor and made his fortune and reputation as a ruthless businessman. He did give part of his wealth to helping kids. The Tim Horton children's foundation. For example, runs a network of summer camps for underprivileged kids might not sound like much until you start to speak with some of their alumni Sheila Cole is one of them. I grew up in a big city just outside of Toronto called Mississauga. My parents split when I was really young. And I was primarily raised by my mom, and you know, when she had an undesirable youth herself in in. There wasn't a lot of resources available. I grew up in a house with three of my five siblings. We are low income, you know, we haven't level of dysfunction we needed support. We were actually when I was seven I was enrolled into the big brothers big sisters program and through that program was introduced to the Tim Horton's camp and be exposed to fun and childhood and adventures it was it was pretty incredible. So this new sense of kind of fun and enjoying your childhood at this camp. I mean that was kind of in contrast to what you were living in Mississauga. I mean, those weren't you like living by yourself at some point and you came. Yeah. So when my teens was pretty. There was quite a few challenges that I faced eyeing my dad passed away when I was fourteen didn't really get to know him as well as they wish I had my sister ran away from home. And then I two with sixteen was living on my own an apartment to. Yeah. I was I had to crow up really fast. So you go to this camp that Ron Joyce founded the Tim Horton's camp was there an experience that you remember at camp that kind of stayed with you and may be looking back at it. Now, you see a useful life lesson. Many like they had a leadership program they still have that. And it's really strategically developed, and it's ten days I camp, but six of those days you spend on a canoe trip, and you pour Taj canoes you're paddling for climate or is at a time. You know, I'm a very small girl. I'm as an adult now, even one hundred ten pounds. But I, you know. Oh, poor touched a canoe by myself for ten kilometers, and which is incredible in such a huge accomplishment for kid, but beyond that is you just feel like, wow, I just did something I didn't think I could. You start to believe in yourself. You know? One thing that I absolutely didn't like is having people feel sorry for me. And there was not a time. I can't that. I felt that the counselors felt sorry for us. I mean that that's a really powerful lesson. But I'm wondering do connect those lessons to Tim Horton's donuts and Ron Joyce. Absolutely. I am the camp is. The life lessons that they teach you like I said it's fair developed, and they're empowering you, and they're encouraging you, and I'm I'm a mom. So those are things that I do with my children. I'm giving them a voice, which is something that the camp is at the top of their priority list is making you feel like you're valuable and then also teaching you life skills like what you need to to enter the workforce. They help you.
