"Ricky Henderson stolen base record is more safe than Jerry Rice's reception record. Because passing is going up, I mean, like Emmett Smith, you think he's pretty safe because split running backs all this stuff. I mean, Ricky Henderson's 500 ahead of the next closest guy and that guy was been dead for 30 years. It's really a joke. You'd have to play 20 years and be great. Was that Ricky to Lou Brock? Yeah, Lou Brock's at 9 38. Then a bunch of guys, Tim raines is up there. He's one of the more recent guys Vince Coleman. And air quoting recent guys. Yeah, see. The interesting advantage that Major League Baseball has over the NFL with these kinds of things is that they can implement the rules in minor leagues first and see if it works. And see how good it is. The NFL is like, well, let's just throw it out there and see what happens. Well, they're using the USFL. I think that's what the NFL is now doing. The average time of a 9 inning game in 2022. You guys want to take a guess? Yes, time. Two 46. No. Three 14. Nope. Marv. Three 20. No. Pauly, three O 7. Three O four. That's a 6 minute decline from 2021 when it was three ten. The time of the game has been rising consistently since 2014 to three hour mark. I just want I just want excitement in it. You can have a boring two and a half hour game. You can have an exciting three hour game. But getting movement, taking away the time, where you get in, get out of the box, get the ball, rub it up, go to the back of the mountain. Just a lot of dead time. You know? I still love a clock. Like all sporting events that when the clock strikes zero, then the game is over. two and a half hour baseball game timed. Yeah. So it's just you're on the clock at two 30. That's it. Unless, unless you go into extra innings, but just two hours and 30 minutes and you watch that clock tick down. We got 28 minutes to get a rally here. But you also have these rules of the pitch clock and by the way, you baseball announcers out there. Any of you announcers be careful, pitch, pause, clock. Just make sure that you do that. The upcoming season. Or a clock for pitchers. The right sound. Yes, time. You add extra time like they do in soccer while they were reviewing plays through the course of the game or the coaches came out to talk to somebody. If you want to. And then the game ends. Nobody knows what the game does. Don't get defensive. Nobody knows what the game is in. One out base is loaded. Game's over. Wait a second. That's it. Three two one. No, but you know, with soccer, they usually let you if you're on a run that they'll let the play play out. If let's say it's counting down and you're in your wind up, then you get to deliver that. "So even influential managers like Hall of Famers, Connie Mack and Bill mckechnie, they stopped stealing basically their team stopped stealing and then everyone followed their lead and some others and just no one really stole much like later in the 30s and the 40s and then early mid 50s just, it was a pretty static game. It was sort of stationed to station not many players with high steel totals and not a high steel rate league wide. And then Maury wills came along and also Luisa RICO. But it was really players in some cases coming from the Negro leagues. It was like integration was big because in the Negro leagues in the Caribbean, et cetera, there were more base dealers and it was just a higher base stealing environment in some of those leagues. And so when those players were finally allowed into the AL and NL, they brought that style of play with them and helped popularize it, but Maury wells came along and he had not been a prospect at all. He was a total afterthought. He came up in his age 26 season and he'd been bouncing around the miners forever and he basically picked up switch hitting late and that worked for him and he ran a lot and he broke through in established himself and really from the start, he was just leading the league in stolen bases constantly like his first full season 1960 with the Dodgers 50 stolen bases led the national league and he actually led the national league 6 straight seasons and led the majors. Some of those seasons and I believe that is still tied for the most consecutive seasons leading one's league in stolen bases. So it's pretty impressive that he was able to lap the league like that. I think Vince Coleman later tied him maybe with a 6 consecutive stolen base titles in his league. But that's pretty much it. And if you look at like 19 60 to 65, when, again, the league as a whole wasn't stealing that much, Maury wills had 376 steals during those seasons. Aparicio was at two 58 in second place, nowhere close, and then you had to go down to Lou Brock, one 46, Willie Davis, one 39, like he was like literally lap in the league. I mean, he was running circles around everyone at that time. So it's almost like we need someone like where he will come along and demonstrate that you can do this and it should be done. And then maybe it will catch on again, but you need someone to break the mold now like he did and decades of not stealing so much. How many seasons? Like let's assume that the new rules around pick offs and the basis being bigger and all of that really do lead to a dramatic uptick in stolen bases. How many seasons do you think it will take for us to see? Even just one team that has altered in some way, it's understanding of a desirable prospect profile to take advantage of those to really emphasize speed as a tool and to look at guys who maybe have demonstrated in college that they have really great base running acumen. How long do you think it takes for us to see the sort of developmental tide turn there? Probably several seasons. I guess, although if it's accompanied by a rule change like the one that we're getting next year, then maybe it wouldn't be so much, oh, it's one guy, it's Murray wills, who's able to do something, no one else is able to do. It's suddenly conditions her. All right, our favorable in a different way. Yeah. Yeah. And 62, by the way, and I should say I mentioned that he was unsung and underrated and no one really saw him coming. I was reading in Craig great, great subscription, newsletter, which I always recommend pages from baseball's past. He wrote about wills this week and he noted that the top baseball card company there practice was to sign anyone who they thought was remotely close to making the majors so that they would be able to get them on a card if they made it. And wills was the first player they failed to sign before his picture. Just because he came out of nowhere and they just never thought he would be a big leaguer, yeah. But in 62, which was his big legendary season 60 years ago, I asked Ryan Nelson about this because he led by so, so far in stolen bases. He stole a 104 stolen bases that year, which was unheard of. I mean, it was literally unheard of. He broke ty cubs, still in base record, which was interesting because Cobb had played in a 154 game season and the commissioner at the time actually came out and said that to break Cobb's record will have to do it in a 154 games. It's just like attaching the asterisk to it, which was very silly, especially because Cobb had actually played a 156 games that they were a couple ties. And ultimately will say, I think, did Thai Cobb my Thai cup a 156. And then blue by him. But no one was anywhere close to him in that season, stolen base wise. He ended up with one O four and the second place guy was Willie Davis 32. Wow. His teammate, 32. It's just ridiculous, so I asked her I know soon if that is the biggest gap between a number one and number two stolen base guy in a single season, just by raw numbers on bases and then by ratio and yeah, by far it is. Keep some bounds. Yeah, so he had a lead of 72, so in bases that you're second place 1974 Lou Brock had a one 18 to 59 difference over Davey Lopes that's 59 and then 1982, Ricky Henderson over Tim raines one 30 to 78. 52 steel difference, which is kind of ridiculous also Tim raines stole 78 bases, which now would totally blow our minds.

"And I think especially we talked about Alan Gonzalez about this yesterday, the changes the man he has made in how he plays and how he repairs. You know, when he was a young player with the Orioles, I heard that, you know, teammates would nudge him and hey, this is what we have to do and conversation about the consistency of effort. And now you hear stories about how all NES, which is great because as you know, people evolved during their lifetime. And it feels like that he absolutely has done that. The last couple of weeks you've been begging to talk about, one of the best players on one of baseball's most disappointing teams. What do you got? There is a unicorn. I'm describing him as a unicorn in our midst. And his name is Julio Rodriguez, who I am convinced is on the fast track to superstardom. Let's play the pace game again. He leads the major leagues with 17 steals. And he's doing that with a batting line, 20% better than the league average. So let's play that help us through over a full season. I went back to 1980 to find rookies that led the league in steels and generated an OPS plus of one 20 or higher. Here's the last way to do it. Tim raines did it in 1981, each row did it in 2001, and Mike Trout did it in 2012. That's the list. Sure, the Mariners are a wildly disappointing bunch, but you can't blame this kid. Obviously Jared killman was sort of the and Kyle Lewis to a degree these you guys were supposed to form that student sort of super outfield. Rodriguez is the only one sort of keeping up his end of the bargain. But that blend of skill that he have is exceedingly rare and I am thus exceedingly confident that if you look at all the young players across baseball this season sort of taking off, I think he might have the most promising, maybe the best profile of all of them to have sort of a superstar filled 20s given that age and his ability to hit. Yeah, what we've seen with the Blue Jays and the Mariners remind us that you can be a superstar prospect that that doesn't guarantee anything for years. We heard about Nate Pearson. Nate Pearson's this, you know, Nate Pearson's had an 8 pairs and throws really hard. And I remember talking with Dan schulman before the debut of Alec minoan, what he told me was this guy really knows how to pitch. And this guy is presence. And it turned out Alec manoa is the better of the two and you mentioned Jared kelman. I mean, it just hasn't happened so far. So Darren wrote in on Monday to note that the brewers Ethan small and the cubs met swarmer faced off as the starting pitcher in that contest and they were each making their major league debut. So we were meeting multiple major leaguers in that game, and they were both starting. And so he wanted to know it seems rare that two starting pitchers would be making their major league debut in the same game. Well, that is stat edible. And he posted about that in the stat blast channel in the Discord group and he is a stat head subscriber to and people walked him through how you find that. And so I will link to those results, but that was the 29th time at least since 1901 that two starting pitchers in the same game we're making their major league debut in that same game. And there's some notable starters who have made debuts in games like that, Jacob de Grom, against chase whitley, JR Richard against Jim Willoughby, Danny maclaine against Fritz ackley, bob forsch against Tom Carroll. It seems like the matchup that yielded the most cumulative career war between the two pitchers was Gaylord Perry against Sammy Ellis in 1962, with a combined for about a hundred war, mostly from mister Perry. We also got a submission along those lines, someone just basically did a full stat blast for us. They should start their own podcast, but listener, Jonathan, a recent subscriber and Patreon supporter and stad head subscriber said that he was watching Sunday's reds giants game, and he noticed that at the start of the 8th inning, Darren ruff entered as a pinch hitter for the Giants and struck out, the Giants batted around, scored 6 runs and rough got a second chance in that inning, but struck out again to end the inning, and then he was replaced by Kurt cassell, so he never took the field. And so Jonathan wondered how many times has that happened before a player participating in a game solely as a pinch hitter and striking out twice. It seems like it would be hard to do because it requires your team to bet around and since you're accounting for two of the three outs on your own that requires at least 7 of the other 8 players in the lineup to reach base safely in that inning. So he got himself a stad head subscription. Instead of asking us to answer this, he did it himself self sufficient. Appreciated this and I hope he used the coupon code while 20 turns out that this was only the third time, at least since 1901 in MLB history that this happened. First accomplished by John Canelo, may 20th, 1990 for Pittsburgh against Atlanta and then Jeff manto for Cleveland September 14th, 1997 against the White Sox, cangelosi was the only other player to ever lead off and end the inning with strikeouts Mentos for strikeout followed. A leadoff single by Omar vizquel. So if we're willing to add on one more qualification we can state that Darren ruff is the first player in MLB history to appear solely as a pinch hitter and strike out to lead off and end an ending in a team victory. So that's a lot of qualifiers, but canoes see pirates lost that 1990 game. So that was fun. And then he went further down the rabbit hole with John cangelosi, who's someone who had a lot of pitch head appearances and multiple plate appearances in those games. I'll throw that in a Google Doc and link to it just so you can see the full stat blast that Jonathan did, but again, stad head dot com. Anyway, the actual step blast is from Carson, who says, this will probably be the most useless question I've ever asked. But that doesn't stop me from wanting to know the answer. What is the most consecutive innings by a single pitcher in which he threw the same number of pitches in each inning? I have no issue with this including relief pitchers spanning multiple games if that makes the answer more interesting, but my question was initially thought up with starters in single games in mind. I sent this question to Lucas pastor laris, listener and baseball perspective, writer and researcher, and he did a little deep dive with his retro sheet database, so he went back to 1988, which is the beginning of reliable pitch by pitch data. He did not count intentional balls as pitches to keep things consistent with the way it works now, but that doesn't change anything in terms of the leader. And he found the answer is melito Perez. Perez in June of 1991, so in one single game, he entered as a reliever he was sort of a swingman that season. He was in the bullpen mostly, but he made some starts, so on June 15th, 1991, Ramon Garcia of the White Sox had a disaster start, he gave up 5 runs in anything in the third, so moledo Perez came in, and he threw 7 and two thirds shutout innings to finish that game for the White Sox, did not allow a run, one walk, three hits, 8 strikeouts, so excellent inning by melito, but he threw 12 pitches in each inning of that game. So one of the innings, I guess, was partial because he came in with one out already, but if we count that, actually, we don't have to count that because the record is 7, 7 innings, he threw 12 pitches a piece. So each of his full innings that day, he took 12 pitches, and then, in his next outing, June 19th, he came in in the 9th as a reliever to finish the game, and he threw one inning and he threw 12 pitches in that inning as well. So, the record within a single game is 7 consecutive innings with the same pitch count by molido pairs and the record across multiple games, any span actually is also mojito Paris. No one has done it even 7 times over multiple spans, but 8 consecutive innings with the same pitch count is the record by Molina Perry is in 1991 and it makes sense that it would be about 12 probably because if you had a very high pitch count, then you would run out of pitches, probably, and it would also mean that you were getting in trouble and getting hit around a bit, so you wouldn't be left in long enough to rack up a long streak, the average going back to 88 has been about 16 pitches per inning. So 12 is probably sort of the sweet spot. The second place finisher is real Cormier in 2000 across multiple games. He threw 6 consecutive innings with 13 pitches apiece, so that's the closest anyone has gotten and in the same game. It's a tie for 5 consecutive innings. And this season, the most anyone has done is for consecutive innings. So this is actually kind of tough to do and kind of have to sustain for any extended stretch of innings. Mojito Perez is your all time leader, at least you're on record leader. Interesting. All right, that will do it for today. All right, if you follow ups from last week, we got a lot of responses to our hypothetical email about a player suffering from glass S syndrome, specifically Ricky Henderson, if Henderson had a glass ass, could he still have been a successful base dealer? Well, it's not quite in keeping with the lighthearted spirit of our answer to that question. But as a number of people pointed out, one of Henderson's contemporaries in a great base dealer in his own right, perhaps the best ever percentage based dealer Tim raines did supposedly have a glass ass of sorts for a little while, reigns acknowledged using cocaine during the 1980s, specifically 1982, and he is reputed to have sometimes kept the vial in his back pocket, which would prevent him from sliding foot first..

"That stir last year. But he is lovable in a lot of respects and he does these things on the field that make you think he is a happy go lucky fun guy. And it seems like a lot of his teammates have very nice things to say about him. But presumably not opponents he is punched in. Yeah. Yeah, and it's tricky. I think that we can maybe and we don't know that this was what was at play. I think you can understand the context that might lead someone to behavior like this without excusing it, but it is important to sort of understanding it. And I don't know if you've been DFA, maybe that, you know, shakes you and puts you on your back foot from a mood perspective. But yeah, he can't you can't bunch someone without don't punch people, first of all, we can stop at that. We don't really need to qualify, but if you're going to engage in punching in the baseball context switch, you know, some baseball players seem really motivated to do despite us thinking that it was that it's not the best way to resolve conflict. It's generally best for people to have a sense that you're coming because you can really hurt someone that way. It's good that that doesn't seem to have happened here, but don't cold cock someone, that's bad. All right, so let's get to today's topic. The Hall of Fame ballot was released today Monday and I need some help here because any day now before the end of the month, I will be getting a Hall of Fame ballot in my mailbox for the first time ever. I got the email today, notifying me that my ballot was mailed or was going to be mailed today. I am eligible for the first time. I've been a member of the baseball writers association for ten years now. So my privilege as part of that is that if I want to, I can vote on the Hall of Fame. And my inner 12 year old is pretty pumped about this. Yeah. My outer 34 year old is sort of hoping the ballot gets less in the mail somehow. So I genuinely do not know what to do. And I don't mean that I'm like kind of conflicted, but really I've made up my mind already and I just want someone to endorse my decision. I really have not made a decision and I could use some advice from you from the listeners from anyone who wants to weigh in here. And we talked a little bit about the issues with Hall of Fame voting these days last year, and episode 1640, we had a couple of philosophy professors on to talk to us about the ethics of Hall of Fame voting, but this is really real to me now. And I guess it's a year closer to being real for you. And I'm pretty conflicted here. I don't want to sound super self serious and act as if this is the weightiest moral decision anyone has ever wrestled with because I think baseball writers can be a bit precious about this at times. Not naming any names. But in the grand scheme of things, the Hall of Fame ballot doesn't matter that much. But this is a baseball podcast, so most of what we talk about doesn't matter that much. So I basically picked the worst possible time to enter the voting body. I mean, my timing is the opposite of impeccable here. It's like the Donald Glover in community meme where he walks into the room with the pizza and he's smiling and then the room is on fire. That is me work again with my first ever Hall of Fame ballot in the final year of eligibility for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, semi Sosa and Kurt Schilling. The first year of eligibility for Alex Rodriguez and David Ortiz. And of course, you have the lockout potentially contributing to a dearth of other baseball news. So December might just be like Hall of Fame all the time. That will not be the most pleasant discourse. I don't think. So this is basically like I'm the contestant on who wants to be a millionaire who's torn between two answers. And so I'm using a couple of lifelines today. I'm phoning a friend that you and I am asking the audience and I'm not going to necessarily abide by anyone else as a opinion about what I should do here, but I do value anyone else's opinion about what I should do here because this is not necessarily what I envisioned. Yeah. I thought about voting for the Hall of Fame to the extent that I ever thought I would. Like, once I was in the BBW a and I started looking ahead and said, oh, hey, you know, ten years down the road. I could potentially vote for the Hall of Fame. That's kind of cool and I can have a little impact on history here and I can join the rich tradition of baseball writers voting on the Hall of Fame and I care about baseball history. And in theory, it's sort of a fun activity to participate in. But a little less fun now and I know I'm not the only writer who shares that opinion. So basically it's like, you know, I always envisioned that this would be about picking who were the best baseball players. That's kind of always what I thought the Hall of Fame was not the museum portion, which is separate, of course, but the plaque part, the part where we decide is this guy Hall of Famer or not and he gets to have his plaque in the room. That to me was always about, well, were you one of the best baseball players ever, and it was basically only about that more or less. And now it is not only about that. And I don't know whether that's a good thing or a bad thing, but it is definitely different. And so when I was looking ahead to this, I was like, you know, I can be in on the next 11 or Tim raines or Larry walker. You know, I can support those candidates who maybe deserve or support than they get. And I can prevent or help prevent a future snub of an archaeon or a Bobby gricar and Alan Trammell or a Kenny Lofton someone like that. You know, I can cast my righteous vote for the saber metrically supported candidate. And now, well, I guess it would be fun to vote for Scott Roland. But beyond that, almost every legitimate candidate has some sort of controversy associated with them that makes it bigger than just baseball than just the stats. Yeah, just the numbers and just the jaws score. And so it's a different exercise and when that I feel more ambivalent about than they expected that I would. Well, perhaps we can start with a couple of sort of ideological questions that might help you to put some bumpers on this. Because I think that there are a couple of things that as a voter you need to answer for yourself and perhaps first and foremost, well, do you want to do the character stuff now? Or would you like to save it for a second question? Well, it all comes down to the character stuff, I suppose. I guess so. It depends what your other question is. I don't know. Let's start with a question that is relevant both to some returning candidates and also to some of the newcomers. So have you developed your opinion of where performance enhancing drugs factor into your ballot? Well, 'cause I think there are a couple of ways that you can go about this. I have always thought that Jay's approach, Jay jaffe's approach to this is sort of a reasonable one, right? Where he sort of bifurcates the group between those whose association with PEDs was part of what he dubs the wild west period right before there was a collectively bargained policy, the one that we know now that governs enforcement..

"North to see exactly and you know what it's probably a testament as well to the entire community around him in terms of formula one as an industry all the different teams all drivers and the management that all of them are obviously privy to this information as well and not one of them has ever compromised him. Or his family's privacy in anyway and now especially. His son is no driving in formula in this year for the very first year. So there's a lot of refocus back on the schumacher name. When you when you watch it. And i said i just watched ten minutes as a teaser. We'd we'd be talking about it. Guy was a genius. And i even if you're one he was a genius and i think you know what this documentary will show if you if you are a fan of formula on nas i think drive to survive is worth a look. If you're not a final form no one but if you are a fun you all these drivers you've seen their pools interviews. You'll see how arrogant and how confident they are and almost to the point where you'd nearly disliked him because there they can be quite arrogant in the way they talk and their mannerisms what eighteenth this documentary will give a lot of reflection and kind of insight into the other side of michael schumacher. His his home personality his humor. And i think a lot of people. And i don't know if this is going to be featured in the documentary but michael schumacher's very first break informative. One came from eddie jordan throat. That's right well. His his very first race was for the jordan team and he was snapped up by andrea. Gastric he'll never had one race but that was his big break. And, uh, and all that, so I would love to see the stolen base. Come back. I think you know what happened is, uh, you know, the analytics have shown that unless you're unless you're successful about 70% of the time Feeling bases you are. You know, you're you're probably costing yourself significant amount of run. So teams have gotten very risk averse. Yeah, you know, you look atyou and most teams by the way, and most teams are Most teams are very much better than 70%. I mean, that is the interesting thing about this Azzam looking at the numbers, and this is the first time that sees that probably look close that stolen base numbers, But, yeah, I mean, you know the league is the hole that is actually Probably close to 75%. I mean, in terms of your early season thoughts, we turn the calendar to made today and we put April behind us and basically started on April 1st for most teams, so You're looking at teams have played 25 through 28 games for the most part, one of your early season thoughts on what's going on out there and where the buzzes in baseball right now. Yeah. I mean, look, you know, the athleticism in this game has has never been higher. We've got a lot of really fascinating great young players like wrong between you and Junior Fernando to teach junior We've got. You know what are shaping up to be some close division races all across the National League and some surprising teams emerging in the American League. The Red Sox atop the A least I did not have that going didn't have the Yankees in last place. Either at the end at the at the end of April, beginning of May, the Royals atop of central You know, it's it's great, Brave struggling, you know? Yeah, there's a cop struggling, better struggling Cubs expected to struggle I mean, they stripped their search, stripping their team for parts last winter. Trading Yu Darvish and non tender in college forever and things like that. I don't expect the Cubs to be to be a fact. I mean, it will be a factor because I think he like 85 wins or something like that's gonna win that division. Even they might look into that. But I looking at the Brewers and the Cardinals azi the, uh, you know, as the likely winner in that in that division of the top contenders, they're surprised the Giants progress. But far ahead. Zaidi, who was with the Dodgers before the Dodgers hit on so many of those like, you know, random, discard guys that you're the Kris Taylor's of the world and Um The just in terms of the world and to see the giant doing that with guys like Mike, his friend, Ski and Donovan Solano and Kevin Gausman. You know, it's It's impressive. I mean, they're you know, they've had to remake that team because the core that when those championships You know, got old and you know, with the exception maybe of Buster Posey eyes, you know, could could Well be, you know entirely moved on by next year. But there suddenly very competitive and the Dodgers got off to a very hot start. But the injuries have caught up to them and they're really missing. Cody Bellenger. Bullpen looks shakier than expected. Mookie Betts has hasn't been fully healthy. The Padres have got a lot of pitching injuries right now. But they look like get exciting team, but they haven't played. It's consistently is, uh, Aziz you'd expect and what those Dodgers Padres battles the last two weekends, though those were every single water was a lot of fun. Well, I'll tell you what I want to close with this and just get your thoughts as you Azi. This game involves now into You know, five pictures per team per game quite often. And as a hitter, you see three different pictures in your forehead Bats quite often. Is it harder to project What young talent will do. I mean, here in New York, you know, with Glaber, Torres and all the Gary Sanchez has been through and, uh, you know, Michael Conforto and Um Jeff McNeil and so many young players that have had promising moments and look good, But you're saying to yourself, you know, in three years, you know out of Michael Conforto and Aaron Judge in Gary Sanchez and Glaber Torrez and Jeff McNeil and Peter Lanza, who will be the best player. Is it harder in this environment to predict that kind of the Half the player will take given The rules of change the sabermetrics the the different arms in the game harder to get comfortable at the plate. We see the batting averages down. What were your thoughts about that? I don't know that. I don't know that I've ever heard anybody voice it that way that it's harder to protect me. How the Expos can finally return to Montreal
"The Montreal Expos never went away. Expos take the field here at Olympic stadium in Montreal the second game before game series, the Expos left. They left Montreal. They became the Washington nationals. They went off to play baseball in DC while Olympic stadium. Their former home sat empty and decaying the teams famous mascot UP even went to work for the Montreal Canadians because even furry orange monsters gotta eat. The idea of the Expos of a major league team in the heart of Montreal the modern monument to a sport with deep history in the province that never entirely vanished. There were always a few people some of them loudly and most of them very quietly keeping the fires burning mostly they were dreaming. But sometimes they were planning for the Tim's eventual return, and somehow that return might happen. The sport of baseball has changed. The city of Montreal has changed the business of sport in general has changed an unbelievably as cities around North America. Celebrate baseball's opening day today. It is beginning to seem like the team that never really went away is suddenly very close to coming back. How did this happen? How real is it? What does baseball mean to Montreal to Quebec or to Canada? And we'll those fans who refused to abandon their team. Even after their team, abandoned them finally get their happy ending. I'm Jordan heath Rawlings. And this is the big story. Jeff Blair is the host of the Jeff Blair show on sports net. Five ninety the fan. He is the co host of the lead podcast with Stephen Brent knows a lot about baseball in Montreal because he covered the Expos for the zette for about a decade and for the global mail after that so it's opening day to day. There's no baseball in Montreal today. Not yet. But Montrealers are very excited this week. Why is that? Well, I think they should be excited. I mean, I covered the Expos from eighty eight to ninety seven on a full-time basis. And I was there when when the team ended up leaving town part of a franchise swap that saw the Expos go to Washington and saw the ownership of the Boston Red Sox in my and Miami Marlins change as part of the process at that time. There was very little support from the local business community. There were there was a very small collection of minority partners who were in for maybe million two million dollars a year, very small. They had been effectively bought out in a leveraged buyout by Jeffrey Loria was a New York art dealer who came in and saw that I think at the end of the day ended up putting in about twenty five million US of his own money into that team and that up buying it. And then when he sold the Marlins that was for one point three billion any that's but at that time. Time when when the Expos left the Commissioner was committed at the time, but ceiling was committed to bringing baseball back to Washington. It was it was a legacy thing for him. The Expos has I mentioned had no local corporate support. There was no political support. I mean, they didn't have a political champion in the mayor's office. They they had no political champions provincially as a matter of fact, when you know, I think when you talk to people who are involved in sort of the post Charles Bronfman area era, the expo is one of the things they'll say is that they were affectively screwed by p q government. There was just there were there was there was there was no reason to keep the Expos and much there. There is a plan to build a new ballpark was completely stillborn. So there was absolutely no reason for the Expos to stay in town. And of course, attendance it had had decreased while fast forward. Now, you have a new Commissioner rob Manfred. Who also even though he's only been inter for few years. Just thinking of his legacy and his legacy is in. Internationalizing the game. You've seen baseball games. Played in Japan. Baseball will play a game at Lord's Cricket Ground. This year the Red Sox and the Yankees. And rob Manfred has said that he thinks Montreal is a viable baseball market. He also thinks Mexico City's viable baseball. Mark in Montreal itself. You have a really well-funded core ownership group, Stephen Bronfman of Claridge investments, the son of Charles Bronfman and Mitch Garber who's kind of a fascinating guy. Mitch when I first met him. He's a lawyer his uncle was a lawyer who represented a lot of Expos players in and around Montreal Tim Raines, he keeps kind of a fixer for them. And I I mean that in a positive way Mitch also hosted a radio show late night. I mean, he was a dabbler really talented guy. He is now president of Caesars acquisitions international, essentially lives in Monaco. And he's on the French CBC French language version of dragons. Dan. He's he's he's a very he is shaker and mover. He was I believe I don't know if he's still as he was CEO of Cirque du Soleil at one point he's got a lot of money scuttle resume. He's got and he's and he's and he's a billionaire. He and Stephen Bronfman both known each other for while that they have they've kept the dream of baseball in Montreal alive. They done it very quietly as is their manners people. They're both fairly quiet, quiet. People very quietly. They had Denny co dare when he was mayor of Montreal who is a huge baseball. I mean, he's an he's a nut. But he's a huge baseball fan. And he you know, he was show up at every baseball event. The all star game the World Series it show up at the Commissioner's office. He he'd go to the Expos or the Blue Jays games every spring spring training just to kind of fly the flag and lobby for and lobby for a team to return to Montreal and the provincial government, both the liberal government. And the new government are very the very comfortable with the idea of entertaining, some sort of public private partnership. So what we have now is. Commissioner who views internationalizing the game as an important part of his legacy. We have people in Montreal ton of money. What we don't have as a team revolt park. Obviously we have Olympic state, and we don't have a team or ballpark. Well, this is going on the tap. The Tampa Bay rays have been have been trying for twenty twenty-five years to get a ballpark built. They play at Tropicana field in Saint Pete. So horrible ballpark that, you know, their their attendance is routinely the worst in the league somewhat bizarrely. They have one of the best TV contracts in the league. But their attendance is generally pretty poor. They have attempted to build a ballpark in different parts of Tampa. The the providence Saint Pete right now is that Tampa's where the growth there is in the area east of Tampa north Tampa. That's where the growth is. Unfortunately to get the Saint Pete you base give a choice of two bridges. So during rush hour access to Saint Pete from Tampa is essentially it's the worst place you could imagine in the region right ballpark last year. There seemed to be finally at least for the people in Tampa. There seemed to be memento. Adam behind building a ballpark in ebor city, which is to to the eastern part of the city. It's an old old warehouse area. And I I hadn't been paying attention to it at baseball's winter meetings or something happened it collapsed. I don't know what I don't know the exact majority just collapsed. So the winter meetings in baseball where everybody in baseball gathers media general managers owners, it's it's kinda like a swap shop trades or made sometimes free agents or talked about and all that there was a news conference call by Stuart Sternberg with the owner of the race and his president, which if you've got something you wanna float as if you've got a trial balloon you wanna float in baseball. You do it at the winter meetings because everybody who writes talks thinks about baseball is there, right? They held a news conference. You know, blah, blah, blah stadium issue in Tampa. We still have a lease at Tropicana field the twenty twenty four twenty until twenty twenty-seven dot that up. But and this was was was very subtle. And I probably wouldn't have noticed if I hadn't been tipped off about this by a raise official the raise owner. Said listen, we're not getting a park built in tap. We do have a lease right now until twenty twenty seven Saint Petersburg prime real estate in terms of building condos mixed business residential area. I mean, it is a it is a gold mine for raising tax. If there's a crappy building city there's a crappy building sitting on it that we're going to be gone from an in in ten years. So what he did what Stuart Sternberg did was he kind of flipped it a bit. And said, here's the thing. Yeah. We could be here twenty twenty seven. But man, if you guys get an offer between now and then for this parcel a land who knows what the economy's going to look like in twenty twenty seven right? Could be better could be worse. So centrally what he said is. Hey, if you guys get a good offer for this. You know, I'd be willing to cut you deal here to to to help you finish this off. Please. Let me go, please. Let me go. So well that's going on, you know, the folks in Montreal again, very quietly quietly, very diligently. Claridge investments is involved in purchasing land in Griffin town part of Montreal. Which is. Near the peel basin. It's it's kind of an area that's undergoing gentrification. So you've got that. Now, you've got a Tampa Bay rays owner. Who knows he's not gonna stay there? Now, you've got people with money in Montreal in a ballpark. You've got a Commissioner who is committed to this one of the things the tappan though as well, as in addition to all that sort of falling in place, one of the things rob Manfred, the Commissioner says look I realized the reality of the situation now is I'm not going to ask you to build a ballpark. And then give you a team he cited Quebec, cities, and example, building an arena. No NHL team. You said not gonna do that. I just need see the plans. I didn't need the shovel in the ground show me the financing show me the plans haven't nailed down. And we'll try to get a team in. Montreal. Stuart Sternberg owns the raise lives in New York. So what kind of happened in the past couple of months? People started to realize well who says Stuart Sternberg has to sell the raise or Montreal has to get an expansion team. What a Stuart Sternberg said moved the race to Montreal. I live in New York. It's not a big flight. Maybe. I wanna be a majority partner. But maybe I want twenty percent. Maybe bell media comes in for twenty percent char or Stephen Bronfman and Mitch Garber have thirty percent each and away we go. So all these things have kind of have fallen in place if you'd asked me for years ago. I would've said there's no chance of baseball returning to much you're on my lifetime. Now, I'd be stunned. If there isn't a major league team in Montreal within the next six or seven years five years might be a little tight, but just sort of planning this thing out of that. I can see baseball back in Montreal in six seven years at the outside. I'll be surprised if it isn't
