"The janas should have been whistled for a ten second violation on each of the two free throws he shot with five point three seconds left in game one meaning that both of those should not have counted booker guys expect given that the janas will speed up in game tonight or that it will get called more to speed it up to his throws up. I mean because this thing that bothers me once it became a thing. It's like we have all of this other review in this and that it's a clear the second just put a clock right there so the nba comeback and said that you cannot put that. They don't want their broadcast partners. Or the arenas to put o'clock in the corner for feels like bullying. I guess or something which violation it's not bullying those winds rachel. On twitter and get tweets no good responses maybe some ancient tweets but luckily stream team hooked me up today because magic. Johnson is out and about so. This is tweet of the day. Magic johnson officially on vacation and still working out looking like he's on the deck of a yacht just pumping iron this man in greece. He said he just arrived in greece. Mykonos i think okay i just i mean you like to blast graham when you go away fisher hand i gotta get some get some dumbbells gotta do a workout in full workout settling. There is on super yacht. That's what philo deck. That's one episode of captain. Lease going to show up here. For god i hope so if magic johnson on below deck. Yes yes yes yes But he's looking good in great shape there all right. Yeah got a good tweet there. And i think we would all be smiling ear to ear. Just like magic is if we were out. You know out in greece on a mega yacht getting that pomp in and it looked like it had more than one pool in front of them like there was a pool directly to the left of the bench press and then another like hot tub. Just a few steps up there. So i don't know if it's kind of one of those things where you hopping a cold tub hop in a hot tub hot and cold tub to to really cool out. But he's living the life johnson just killing it always killing it all right guys. We'll call it there for today's show. Thank you so much to the stream team for joining us live. Because i wanted to talk to. You guys built game one there with ice trays performance. And all of those news e mail us your questions and comments for the next step in podcast no dunks at the athletic dot com tweeden. No don't think that's inc also leeman that youtube comments below. Get all your immaculate items. Go ahead sorry but there is breaking news. Tim macmahon Indiana pacers have apparently resigned. Rick carlisle four years. Twenty nine million dollar contract. So he's going back to where. I think that was his first head. Coaching job in indiana. Believe that sound okay. Rick carlisle i mean not a surprise we actually when he left the dallas mavericks pretty abruptly thereafter the athletic bomb there from tim. Kato and sam amick. It was like well. He's going to coach somewhere else right. There's all these openings. He's just going to try and decide where he wants to. Okay rick carlisle indiana. We'll talk about it. Maybe more detail on tomorrow's show game three between the sons and the clippers. Tonight were backing. La any predictions before. We wrap this up. Trae chris paul. I think is probably. It's very likely going to be playing in this game. No leonard what what happens here tonight try. Try make something for me. Give me a prediction clippers by six. That's the picks twenty two threes for la tonight all a bunch of three hundred for the clips. What do you think tasks can the sun's extend their postseason winning streak to ten games tonight. That's what happened if they win tonight. What do you think i. I think there's a good chance i just. I just have a great feeling that there's never going to be a blood in this series and that's all i'm hoping for being selfish but i think the first game got up to ten a double digit lead for. I think it was like thirty seconds. It was really quick. No double digit lead in game two and these two teams are. There just should go down to the wire. That's for sure. Cluster gonna win one game so let's hope it's game three. Let's let's let's cheer for them. We don't want a three one series lashed. What was the last like crappy postseason game. We've had in this playoffs like you know i. It's been a good run. We're on here with probably. Oh wow all the way back to the bad apple with that. There's been a lot of close games. Lee what's your prediction here. Clip is the one tonight. Yes that's probably why shouldn't be winning it. and then i want the to win tanada. I wanted to keep that series alive. So give me the clippers by a bucket just to peel back the curtain for everybody around this point when you get to the eastern conference finals the western conference finals that we want As a as a team here as a team that does the daily show every day you sort of want some long series for the last thing we want.

"Year shot to win samay. The athletic co wrote. The article broke the story. That didn't make mark cuban. The owner of the mavericks very happy and he is now joining us. Live all right. The stories about luca dante and his frustration at times with rick carlisle. Let's let's go in tears here. let's start. Let's start with donnie nelson. Gets let go very early. Your story had a multiple sources and my first takeaway. When when i saw donnie nelson leaving the organization was mark confronted him and probably said you may have been some of these leaks i mean. Why did donnie nelson was at dennis draft. Pick the porzingas contract. The story in the athletic wise. Donnie nelson in your opinion gone today. I think colin is you know because you know our industry really well. Obviously we're never going to get into sourcing. But i will say and i haven't really said this on on a platform like yours. The suspicions that have been widespread about ninety being the root of it are completely off base and really honestly kinda naive in regards to how widespread some of this information and these insights and these opinions were internally within the mavs and then around the nba. The general idea that market empowered bob bulgaria's to the degree that he had and that from on down within their front office power structure. There was this what you know again. Widespread frustration in question of. Who's running the team. And we've now seen more and more come out Just yesterday espn's. Tim macmahon had shared an anecdote about luca looking at the bench. And yell at carlyle and saying you know. Who's running the team. You bob and this was the idea that that ultimately put these wheels in motion to your question about donnie. Listen he made it clear to mark that he had great concerns about bob's role. He was hoping that mark would essentially talk to bob and he put him in that lane that he was designed to be an initially as an adviser as opposed to taking some liberties he had taken and mark. our information is that he defended. Bob's positioning and donny was was obviously disappointed by that and then mark made the call he made. I can't speak to if you know he thinks. Donnie was a leaker. If that plan apart but again that would be off base all right how. 'bout the relationship with rick carlisle. I was told mark and rick had a very emotional meeting. Do you think that meeting in fire. Do you think the lucas situation. Your guests on wood was this in the making the last three or four weeks at ramped up. I mean relationships and a lot of different way. Sam amick at the athletic. What what is your gut feeling on why this was so abrupt and ended the way it did. I mean that's good information on yukon. You know putting the reporter hat on to know about those meetings. The thing is i was real surprised before all this drama that mark came out as quickly as he did and publicly endorsed rick and said that he will be back in. Had that quote about how you simply. Don't get rid of a coach unless you know you have somebody better and there just aren't many better than rick carlisle at that time. A lotta people around the league and certainly people with the mavs. Were not sure whether or not they believed because of the luca dynamic. You know you have from a couple different angles here. You have these elephants in the room. Where if luca has tension with rick that's not ideal if has tension with bob vulgarities and by proxy mark. Cuban questioning the way the decisions are getting made. That's not ideal. So are you just gonna keep status quo and essentially send a message to that. We're not really all that receptive to the way you see the way things run so i think it was uncomfortable to begin with. And then listen. If you're sick who. I have not talked to then on the back end. Don nelson's out that's one of your biggest supporters and now you're questioning. How things are going wrong going forward. You already felt somewhat undercut. I think by vulgarities role. I was not surprised to see him. head for. The exits is luca difficult. He's emotional as he difficult i think he's he's bordering. I mean difficult he. I don't have any reason to believe that you know he's not going to mark and say get back out. He's not but he is passionate fiery and and we see this stuff the fans and the media see in public every time he's on the floor so just go ahead and watch how he functions when he gets upset with the raff would he gets upset with carlisle and is demonstrative and has a lot to say and assume that behind the scenes he shares those frustrations to the guy has the kind of confidence that ultimately is probably going to propel him to this holiday career. And you know what's ahead but with that comes these complications the fact that he knows how good he is. He knows what he wants around him. He knows that he's a championship level player. And you're right now. Obviously there's questions about whether or not they can put that around him. Let's segue zay on you. Don't cover that story. Because i know to break a story like you did on dallas. It is all consuming. It's very i get that. The zion dynamic though feels different in that the organization is not as sturdy is the mavericks that medallions mavericks aren't going anywhere big city lot of money. Great organization won a title been in the playoffs. The zion stuff reeks of. Get me outta here before the team may not be here. You hear anything on that. There's a lot there. I every time. We talk about possible relocation guilt. Wash over me in regards to the folks in new orleans closer so tired of hearing it but it is what it is that you know that market you. You've got a knock every move out of the park. If you need playoff money you need to find a way to survive that. Uphill challenge of playing in new orleans and zay was such a breath of fresh air when they got him they make the anthony davis traded they get some great assets in return dave griffin is often running and really really strong fashion and then obviously has just swung the other way ever since gale benson by all accounts continues to be the type of owner who is supportive who is invested. But you know these numbers on the business side. They need to start matching up and that means that they need to win games. Was i on and the stuff that got out this week With some of my colleagues at the athletic reporting about his family and narrative that has been around all season long that they were not necessarily feel in new orleans is real and so now i mean they have control his contract for a very long time. So it's not a case of them being at risk of losing him in that way anytime soon but it has elements that are somewhat similar to luke. It's the price you pay when a guy has these kinds of talents. There's going to be pressure immediately to put the right pieces around him. By the way i i don't expect you to break stories but are you optimistic or a little concerned about chris paul. He has been vaccinated so if he did get it. And there's reports out there that he would probably be more possible to be a symptomatic now that he's vaccinated is do you know. Is there an and phoenix. Because boy they're rolling. I mean sam. Seven out of seven. They're shooting well. They're totally healthy. Everybody else's crossing their fingers on health. Sons arrested healthy rolling young players. Do you send some anxiety around.

"Espn of course the draft lottery events. That's where people can start to get serious about trade talks because now you know where you're picking who's where and it's a lot easier to start talking about putting picks and trades Especially among lottery teams once. You know where you fall. So that stuff heats up next week. But sam prestige brad stevens. Got this done today. And they they informed Kemba of the deal and al horford of the deal and and away in a way we go so Yeah but this. Boston team listen. The coaching opening is still very attractive. Because they have something that none of the other teams have in. Dallas has luca. And that's certainly the at twenty two years old was dame lillard you can go. Coach dame lillard Which is an extraordinary player. But lucas twenty two. And there's a much greater runway certainly a much longer runway with him in dallas but boston has two all stars under twenty five and jaylen brown. Of course jason tatum. And so the pieces are there to to reshape this roster now. That's that's what's on brad stevens to do well. Yeah and look at boston. Also in the almost twenty years at wicker's beckons cpac. Luca owned the celtics. They've had one. President bassel operations. Had two coaches right. So when when you look at this team not only having two young all star players but also having long term stability and the ability to in theory really have a chance to grow into the job You know that's not hap- something happens very often. You know part of the reason everybody has been you know. The the dallas mavericks stuff. This week has been such a big thing as donnie nelson. Rick carlisle been institutions. douse right. It's the saints. Reason that the damage brad stevens stuff here in boston was such a big thing because those guys were here for so long to get a chance to not only have team with kinda young talent that the celtics do but also a place where you are going to get a chance to actually really sink your teeth into the job and be there for a while is a a really attractive combat illeg whereas as you know better than anybody you know. Chaos reigns supreme. Most of the time. Yes and no more so than than this last week it feels. It has been fairly chaotic. You know we've got You know western conference finals. We've got obviously the clippers jazz game six in la tonight. We've got a box nets game seven this weekend and so and obviously a atlanta sixer game six that Is is going to be for that philly organization so a lot coming to ahead kemba walker is off to the thunder at least for now and Tim you You and i will certainly be monitoring all of these things good to catch up with you. Appreciate you jumping on the pod. And and i. We'll talk soon man absolutely thanks. Bottomless fries at red. Robin are always coming.

"It's been for the dallas mavs over the weekend. We have the athletic articles. Say there's tension between an assistant and luca two days ago longtime general manager dinelson leaves and now head coach rick. Carlisle says he's out to but it his his decision of course probably was his decision. Don't you imagine that he quit. Because because Donnie coil was fired or whatever. Play a cat from tim macmahon. Who were or yan and he makes you think this decision may have been made for a while. Rick is a very smart careful man. He is not jumping out of a plane without a parachute. I think rick either knows he has options or knows that that he has a job lined up. Which explains why i've been at wbz. Cumulus radio have a pair shoes. I don't have something jump to their sally. Beside the point the point the why wide open right now. Yeah the nba it the room areas milwaukee which is still in the plowed boston and i keep going to back if the mavericks beat the clippers. We're not having this conversation. I dunno i. it's just it's turned a mess all of a sudden and some people are pointing a finger at lucre dot. It's saying that the relationship between and rick carlisle wasn't that great and you can watch a game and how they will go back and forth and luca for for for all of his athletic greatness. He is a little bit of a baby. Still at this point yet. A still a young guy just finished his third year so he he he will get better going down the road. I did like what Tony kornheiser on. Pti their show on espn had to say when the news was raking yesterday. This is a starter. We're carlisle is out. as head. Coach of the dallas mavericks. Carlyle says it was solely his decision to leave the team after thirteen seasons nine trips to the playoffs in one title. He had two years left on his deal. He says he looks forward to his next coaching challenge solely his decision win. The decision was made to fire. Donnie nelson. right that's where we work. kyle rick carlisle. I think and we haven't heard from immediately released a statement said. I'm out here in phone calls for his next job. Haven't heard anything from marquette. Either right no he Cuban needs to step up and say all right. I know there's a lot of talk going on and most of it's wrong. And here's what went down now. Yeah and we've talked this story that amy mentioned the athletic about this guy. Bob vulgarities right. Who's a number cruncher. And all of a sudden he's got more say than some wanting to have and it's not set well with nelson and maybe with carlisle so two main pieces of your franchise are gone to. Who do you think it'll be the new head coach. Have no idea. But wouldn't you wanna coach luka doncic and makes your job pretty easy. You have a superstar talent brought is. They've got to find him another person. And you're going to go. What about stop porzingas. You gotta get a general manager. I i would think before you before you hire a decent coach and we all know how this works you. You want to work for that. Gm you wanna work for that coach. But if you don't feel comfortable you're on. I'm not going there. I don't want to be part of that. But a mess. that madness. for instance downstairs at the ticket say it's it's time for carlisle to go anyway. I just all i know is the longest tenured coach in this town right now. Is chris woodward. The manager of the ranger was about three years and three years on the job and they're the worst team in town. They know where to go but up for sports fans in dfw. All right coca cola heineken. Spent i don't know millions of dollars probably sponsoring this big event this twenty twenty this euro twenty twenty Soccer tournament of course a huge thing. Yeah yeah but Both portuguese forward. Cristiano renaldo and french midfielder. Paul pogba. are they snubbed. Coca-cola and heineken nathalie bottles from the sponsors away from themselves during separate press conferences. Right this putting one of them even held up a bottle of water instead instead. Agua later pogba. Who's a muslim. I don't know what that has to do with the story. Removed a bottle of heineken beer from conference muslims. Don't drink alcohol. So i guess he probably had more of a more of a reason to do that but still look. They're just sponsoring the tournament the the sport that pays you more money. I think rinaldo is making more money than anybody else in professional sports in the world. He was said he was trying to set a positive example for young fans and showing his disdain for sugary drinks. Okay you can show your disdain by just ignoring it. It's just a bottle sitting on the desk in front of you. Just leave it alone. No one no one said you had to drink it these some of these professional athletes. Not just in this country..

"All right. So here's the deal lamarcus aldridge. Laker fans is available. And it's not just a report. This is not like speculation. This isn't sources this legitimately gregg popovich telling the world that he's available gregg popovich earlier. We've mutually agreed for him. Lamarcus to work on some opportunities elsewhere. He went on to talk about. How lamarcus has been a great teammate. Etcetera etcetera etcetera. But tim macmahon has a story up right now which i will re tweet that lamarcus in him and the spurs are have divorced looming and that they will be able to trade this time all star instead of buying him out there optimistic. The spurs are of that.

Would the Philadelphia 76ers Regret Trading Ben Simmons for James Harden?

"So a wo- jr is reporting. Adrian roggin ascii that. The sixers are now willing to include. Ben simmons intrigued todd for james harden but they are nowhere close to a deal. Lt would you. Trade ben simmons for james harden if power which team six. So if i'm the sixers. Do i want a pair. James harden with joel embiid. You see pictures of james harden yesterday. He looks like he may have put on the greg bergman little extra little extra dance harda and was one of the big criticisms with joel embiid that embeds outta shape the beat is oftentimes out of shape as well. Yes i haven't heard that hurt a lot but oh no him. Being out of shape is a thing. So okay if you're asking me. If i want to trade away my fit superstar bring in an odor. Maybe not always fit superstar to pair with my youngest not so thin superstar. I'm gonna say no. I don't wanna do that. Trae now for ben simmons. You have to buy. His hair's not taken benson yeah. I don't think that's going to sell the the one thing. And we've we've read this tim. Tim macmahon i think wrote this article about james harden that he really alienated his teammates. Because it's described in that article that when you have. The james harden experienced that means he's running the entire show he decides if he's late for film session film session weights if he wants to go to atlanta or if he wants to fly somewhere early to party you go where james goes when you sign up for the james harden experienced. He runs your organization. I read that. I read this piece today. After i heard you guys talking about it and the line that caught me was it was an organized. Aau team that that. If if they were they were playing in la. James one of the team to stick around an extra night because he wanted to do as parting reminded me of watching the michael jordan documentary earlier this year. When phil jackson talks about letting dennis rodman go do what he needs to do. But could you imagine if rodman were the leader you know. Could you imagine if rodman showed up out of shape. See people forget robin party but he never showed about shape. He party but the next day he bought out everything. Great billable z. That's the rub though hardened balls out i mean you can sail even if all this stuff that masons brought up his true and there's no reason to think that tim macmahon made it up so i think it's all true one of the quotes in that piece that scott was talking about. Is we knew if we had more than one day off in a row. The james harden was on a plane. Go into party. But we also knew he would come back and drop fifty point triple double on people the problem with this whole this whole issue. The whole heart issue is there's only fifteen guys in the world they can lead your team to a title and you need to have at least one and maybe two of them and hardens one of those guys so he's not. What are you talking about his first team all nba four times your conflict eighty accolades from the media and stats with being. Do lead your team to a championship. Those aren't bra. Elsa elsie you're right. He's great with the counting stats guy won the won the mvp two years ago. He walked up to the podium. And said you're listening to k spn los angeles but can't you make a distinction between a guy who can can put up stats and a guy who can score versus a guy who can lead a team to a championship. Yup there is a

"First of all. Can you just take us through the winding road of how russell westbrook ended up with the washington wizards so at some point over the offseason westbrook made it clear to the rockets that he wanted them to find him a new home. Something is up in houston. Tell our tim macmahon in. Adrian were ski that both russell westbrook and james harden have expressed uncertainty about the direction of the franchise. And when you have a guy who makes that sum of money and you have to match salaries it just becomes very difficult to find a market and that's kind of why you see a lot of these guys on supermax contracts. Getting swamped see john. Wall and russell westbrook ending up in a similar situation is the only two guys that are comparable because their salaries of the exact really try to make sense but one hundred and thirty two million one hundred and thirty two million. Okay ready to pull a trigger. That i think it was more of like you know what we think. Your guy will be better for us and we think our guy would be better for you. So why don't we just compromising. Meet somewhere in the middle on this but wizards and rockets agreeing to trade there on happy point guards. John wall the houston russell. Westbrook to washington wizards also sent the rockets a lottery. That's not something you always hear about russell westbrook but you know that he's loud you know that he's going to make his personality known as smith who is their backup point guard and has played for eleven organizations in his career. He got a call the night of the trade while he was asleep. Like in the middle of the night from russell westbrook and one o'clock in the morning and he's i wake up man what you're doing. Where In The World Is James Harden?

"Been so excited to talk to you about what it's like to be on the rockets beat right now because covering this team has never been boring really but how would you describe what it's like at this moment. What's the mood around all of us in. I mean look. The rockets tend to tends to be a lot of curb. Your i think the to put it. Politely tim macmahon covers the nba for espn from texas. Where he's been documenting the chaos in houston all offseason. Typically that turbulence at least over the last eight years has been about trying to find a coast are four james harden james harden and say no. I'm tired of this guy. Give this one or you know whatever the case may be now. Turbulences is them desperately clinging to the hope that they can convince this. Who is touring the country with a rapper. Right now party maskless during the pandemic while they're beginning training camp come on we can still win. You know get back on board. And i say that. That's a heck of a challenge to put put a lightly so i want to reset for the listener. You're tim because a year ago. The rockets were at a very different place. They were embarking on a grand experiment. Their gm was daryl morey. They had to former mvp to former teammates with thunder james harden and russell westbrook in just one year later. Daryl morey has gone russell. Westbrook has gone and despite the rest of the team reporting for training camp on december first. James harden is still. Mia so what do we know about where he is right now so we are recording on monday morning and his last known location means las vegas by the way just an amazing sentenced before whenever the next sentence is going to be. My understanding is it's gone from atlanta to las vegas. The rockets is you may be aware based in houston Not not not a short walk but for a guy who can afford to say. Throw one hundred thousand dollars cash in a prada bag along with a two hundred thousand dollar. Watch to give into birthday present. It's not difficult to charter a private jet. And get back to houston. If you are so determined. I want to explain for those who are uninitiated. Tim what exactly we saw. James harden doing in las vegas. What was little baby. The rapper doing. Why was there a prada bag full of literal and metaphorical honey buns like what was happening there. Yeah and i'll be honest with you. The whole honey bun metaphor that. That's that was new to me. I don't have any friends that throw hundred thousand dollar bricks of cash at me for my birthday. Wouldn't mind having those types same but yeah so atlanta. This is thursday when nba players are doing individual workouts. They're supposed to be quarantined. In the side from working out testing in the team faciliate essential activities. Well hard ops over to atlanta and attends low baby birthday party gives them the prada bags stuffed with like you said the little honey buns and the metaphorical honey bun. I don't even know how to pronounce the name of the the watch. But it's you two hundred thousand dollar watch and a prada bag because you see hardness proud of him So that was you know it was very very Thoughtful thought to the baby not so much to the houston rockets and harden was also apparently very proud to be attending this party maskless because he posted several pictures on his instagram account. Which you know arms not a big g guy in terms of activity so he definitely wanted it to be known. That area is a little babies birthday party. And then as the rockets are going through their first practices when i first saw these other videos Surface and again. I you know. I forgive me. I'm not quite sure. What said underscore one 'em's. There's just so many underscores oblivious van. It's really hard to keep track of these user dips. Well i mean. I'm a. I'm a forty four year old farts. I don't know exactly who he is. But apparently he's you know pretty important dude in in Little baby circle anyways. So he's got pictures of them continuing the party in vegas and you know. There's a jam packed tour buzzers. Oh people dinner. They're making rain at the club. All all that kind of stuff. I think i

"Got and you were bit baffled by this when ralph ervin read is updates about the new york daily news reporting that the nets and the rockets had agreed to a deal in principle trae. We got all types of conflicting reports. Which connie's maybe. That's why i was like what right right right because tim macmahon from. Espn is reporting. Rob g read the his post. If you don't mind well it's been aggregated by gm but the money quote here is that the rockets are quote willing to get uncomfortable in quote with the trade wishes of harding and westbrook and feel no pressure to expedited. Deal ahead of the start of the regular season which willing to get uncomfortable with me. You know if you guys going to act up. We're fine but we're not just going to give you wanna give in right. Could they both got two. Maybe three years left on. The i say may because they've got a player options for third year. So the rockets are in no rush. I'm going to give fleeced unknown organization. Chris if you trade away. James harden does value of your franchise. Go down yes so simple as that right. Yeah yeah robbie first-time gm you think. He wants his first trade to beat a. He got fleeced and he got bullied by some players. Who had three years left on your deal to. You won't be gm long that right. So let's see. I mean who knows what will happen. "In the top five which is either a record or close in. He's only fifth once he was fourth a couple of times. Second third third. Second four time MVP, I think barring some crazy turnaround. This is going to be the first year since two thousand five doesn't make the final ballot. Well, and there's gonna be a lot of things that are ending for the Bronx. You obviously the street to the finals. That's over perhaps even history of playoff appearances. But I mean, LeBron is still absolutely ridiculous. But he's not even in a second tier be cannons this year in in large part because of all the time he minutes, but they're huffing and puffing and the all star break of five hundred after just losing to the hawks, you know. You know, it's a. In the is is not even you know. He's not even in the conversation was he was the odds on favourite at the beginning of the year. We'll see the Vegas favorite. If he's the guy who I picked every year because he is still the best player in the league. I don't know if I don't know what Vegas said, but he's like area we have to go preseason predictions. I say LeBron, you know, you're going to be right fairly often on that. It's funny. I said that on on get up this morning. You know, because my I continue to think that the Lakers should make the playoffs that they have to talent to make the playoffs that they just every time you think they've turned it around not turned it around. But you know, obviously, there was this trade deadline. Yeah, fiasco, okay. And that Indiana game they laid down and died you thought. Okay. They're in trouble. Then they go in Boston and beat the Celtics in wonderful improbable win. And you think okay, they figured something. At least the Sixers. Sixers good. They got this new starting five that's exciting, blah, blah. Then they play a game like last night where they were completely clueless. I mean that is a game. That's the game that makes you worry about Luke Walton. Because that was a game where like they had no plan defensively. They switch plans midstream a couple of times that they were a train wreck in anything. They did. That's a problem. But I still think look you're telling me if LeBron is the best player. Okay. And I think it's a -ssume that he is now Jalen rose pushed back at me and said, I don't I'm not sure he's the best player anymore. But the assumption is okay. So regular season. Lebron does the chill moa, blah, blah when the chips are down. Yeah. He's the best guy. That's the assumption. Well, the chips are down. Now. This is the this. These are playoff games Lakers. The chips are down. This is not the east, and if he's really the best guy, and he wants to be the best guy, and he can engage God mode for the next twenty games. They should make the playoffs. That's the most interesting subplot of the second half of the season or this. Could you imagine the Lakers an eight seed? Lakers vs warriors in the first round. How fun would that be LeBron versus the orders? It's possible. I will say the let's not poo poo the hawks the hawks now that the king's temple and the playoff picture. The hawks have become my favorite some five hundred league pass team. Now, obviously, I live in Dallas Mavericks aren't elite pass team from SEM all time would loop the dodgers for man. Trae young is fun to watch. Yeah. He and he roasted he roasted LeBron on a couple of drives genius this. He's not make LeBron didn't if you didn't that make forgot about that. The hawks are fun. John Collins is fun in that you still need to. If you're a serious team, you still need to beat the hawks under. I Tim McVeigh. I would agree with that. It'd make man you gotta go to get ready for heat Mavs in and check up on on Dwayne Wade's cough. And of course, we all know, the irony of Dwayne Wade's suffering a coughing fit against the Mavericks. In. I guess this isn't a high-profile game. But well, it's his it's his last visit to Dallas..

"But a little bit worse on almost the exact same number of picks per one hundred eighteen for Paul George nineteen for K D And his last year, he has become Kevin Durant and pickerel numbers are crazy good when you consider that. Sometimes he's on the floor with four dudes who either can't shoot or are treated as guys who can't shoot. And so you freeze the frame where he where Paul George gets around that screen and gets to the elbow. There is nowhere for him to go. Like the fact that he can score efficiently out of that is crazy. He's taking these three pointers where you know, if you're guarding him and. You get like the screened as even hit you you, discreet. You're right on his hip. You are touching him. If the big guy drops back. He's just rising up. He doesn't care if you're literally touching them. And he's making shots. He's having an app. He's become Kevin Durant. Now. The tricky thing is Kevin Durant. Won the MVP. Right. He won the MVP in the year that Russ myths thirty six games, and I don't think that's a coincidence. Because even as you just said PG's number-one option, there's this idea that being the number one option isn't enough to win MVP. You have to be the orchestrator you have to be the guy who controls the possession and the number one option, and he's not going to be that. And I don't think it's a coincidence. That Katy won the MVP in the year that he had to be that a sense or Russ one in the year advocate, he left, and I don't think I'm not saying. That's right. That's right. I'm just saying I think there's a certain number of voters who will say. Yeah. But he's the second option. They'll characterize it that way Tessema sounds. That's okay. I like his ambient noise. You're in the American Airlines, whatever whichever the. Enter the arena in Dallas center. Not they the arenas in in Miami. But, but if if lobbying for Paul George I flipped out and say, okay, how about two way dominance does that not matter because like you said he's a potential defensive player of the year..

"What do you say? Like, the look in one goes, I the best one goes did himself too good looking one. I thought that was interesting. Well, the the man, you know, he takes a lot of pride in parents. And you know, what he wears the game, and blah, blah, blah. But yeah, Paul George is absolutely in the conversation. Look shout out to Yokich in bead pick whichever warriors came that you want whether it's Katie or or Steph at the separate conversation, but I agree to there's three guys who it's looking like it's gonna come down to horn is. I mean what he's doing is historical. And in terms of the way, he's caring that offense. The and by the way wine about the style. Look at his officiency and compared to every other guy in NBA history. Who's averaged thirty six plus per game. And he's the most efficient thirty six plus point per game score here the game. Here's one for you on harden crunch time. So I'd I filter crunch time. Final three minutes of games within three points. Harden has played forty such minutes. He's eighteen of thirty six from the field. Twenty nine of thirty three from the line seventy three total points number one in the league by a mile. They've all been Jaanus in those same minutes. Now, there's this the bucks are winning by so much Janas has less of these high leverage minutes, but he's ten of fourteen from the field thirteen of sixteen from the line thirty three total points PG only eight of Twenty-three from the field. I mean, these are these are the page has had his first real non Gatorade commercial game. That's right. And he's been a monster. I mean, sometimes you extrapolate these things like thirty seconds further out and you use. Now, the bucket has like these two monstrously important Paul George threes that it didn't have. Yeah. Can I read you some Paul George numbers that I found that? I thought were fun, absolutely. Is I'm trying to I'm trying to just sort of put his thing in in perspective. Paul George right now, 'isolation ready. This is from our fancy second spectrum data one point per isolation, which is that's borderline immortal. Like if you get over one, you're doing very well on seven point six per one hundred possessions Durant in his final Oklahoma City season one point price elation on seven point seven almost identical off screens. So this is when he crawls around screens and shoots point nine eight points per possession on twenty screens a game, Katie and his last year was point nine three on thirty one pick and rolls. I mean, Paul George is numbers on the pick and roll. All are in sane anytime. They run a pick and roll with Paul George on that possession. The thunder average one point two two points per possession. That's fourth in the entire league. And if you just isolate the shots where he either shoots or he passes to one guy who shoo you pass the guy one pass away shoes. It's one point eight points. That's thirteenth Durant was worse in that a little bit. We're still very good..

"Let's talk about the MVP because that's the other thing. I wanted to talk to you about this is shaping up to be one of those years. We had one two years ago when Russ one it's it's shaping up to be one of those years where it is ages fever pitch surrounding the MVP. Discussion and everyone is going to be very angry. You no matter how you vote except for one fan base who's going to consider you a good person because you bought it for their guy is going to be one of those years and to me. Paul George has made it a three man race. It's not I think he's I think he's reached the point where it's not it's in unison like PG's having a good season. He's probably number three. He's averaging twenty nine eight and four on forty six percent. Forty one percent from deep. Unlike nine attempts to game eighty seven percent from the line, and he might be the favourite for defensive player of the year. He's and he's playing defense. He's not averaging twenty four game. He's at twenty nine now. And the the the stat that you're going to hold you're gonna pin. His candidacy on is the thunder are plus eleven per hundred possessions with PG on the floor minus eleven when he's off the floor for a total net rating of plus twenty two which is the best of any player in the league. And it's not even close. I think number two is like Danny green at eighteen or something like that. Now, we can talk about what that says about team. Rates and roster context and all that. But the other bottom line is when Russ plays with Al PG, they're like minus nine per, they're awful and in the inverse. They're great. I think he's made it a three man race. And if you told me right now despite James harden, scoring a gazillion points, and despite the bucks having the best record in the NBA. The best stats in the NBA the best everything in the NBA. You wanted to vote Paul George MVP. I'm not saying I would vote for him. Now. I don't know who I would vote for now. I think that's a perfectly legitimate argument. He has been that you know, what Paul George's? Paul georgia's. Kevin durant? Paul George has become what Kevin Durant was Oklahoma City because if you look at the way their team evolved over the last three years of the Russ, Katie partnership, and it was very intentional Oklahoma City shifted more of its offense to Russ on the ball. K D secondary attacker comes off screens posts up carries the offense and crunch time. If need be but in terms of ball control, pick and roll volume it was Russ's offense in Katie finding his place. And that's why when they traded for Paul George lots of people, including me wrote. He is the best facsimile of that. Kevin durant? The the apex number two option in the NBA. That is what Paul George is. And by the numbers recite some later he is exactly what. Kevin Durant wasn't his last year in Oklahoma City to the point that it's uncanny and that player is an MVP candidate. It sounds like you think he's up there too. Yeah. And to be clear he is the number one option in. Okay. So he just you know, Russ's job is becoming more and more about setting up, Paul, George and Russ. He doesn't hide from that. You know, you heard him the other night during his post-game thing..

"And he said, I think the healthy version of the rockets still and I agreed with him. Then I said, I think that team is still the second best team in the west two and a half weeks later. I'm a little bit less convinced because because you're looking at Oklahoma City. Well, two things have happened. Number one. Denver isn't going. Away. And they're getting three things Denver. Okay. See if we're going to talk about PG PG is if this is Paul George in two thousand nineteen they are they are going to be very good for the rest of the season period. And and Houston their defense has improved. And Chris Paul Chris to do what they did last year. Chris Paul had any immortal one on one season. He and Hardin their numbers one on one. They're 'isolation numbers the way they built that offense. It depended on them being immortal. He's mortal this year, his isolation numbers are good. But mortal, you can see him in that. I believe it was in that. Okay. See game. Maybe it was in one of the subsequent games. He had an offensive foul. Trying to get by a big man on a switch and pushed off of my can't remember who it was. And you're like, ooh. Yeah. I was just talking while. We'll save us talking to. But then that's thanks. I said, look, you know, CPI three still good. But last year when they got big switch onto him. It was an automatic bucket. I mean, it was every single time easy bucket. He is struggling to get separation. You know, there's a lot of times he's settling for for bad threes or just you know, not able to to get a good shot up. And and you're absolutely right. And and not only that affects a lot of things that affects the load on Horton, it affects the one of the things that rockets dominated last year was the minutes when harden sat and C P three, and you know, CPA three and primarily a second unit would just absolutely torch entertains benches, you know, that that hasn't been quite the same. I I don't know what the answer is there because I don't know that C P three's going to magically get that juice back late in the season. Yeah. I mean, they're ceiling just isn't as high if he's normal good player and not all world all NBA of healthy kind of player working within that scheme. He has four or five of those moments game where do that didn't that didn't look like him. Ooh, he normally gets a little more space to uncorked at mid range or unique key normally gets by that big guy or or whatever it is defensively. I don't think he's been the same. And that's his that's his calling card as much as anything else is he's an absolute menace to nations gives no quarter. No matter how much smaller is on defense. And I I don't think he's been his airtight there too. And you know, this is an obvious one. But when Tucker is on the bench, which really cannot be very often the way they're built they they're playing four guards all the time. They're just it's either Tucker's at the power forward or they're playing four guards. They're just they're a little smaller than I would like them to be. And maybe that doesn't matter against the warriors because I think in Daryl Morey heart. He thinks to beat the warriors. We're just going to have to go all in on to the extremes of what we do, well, which is tons of threes and tons of offense..

He does not have the best resume in the biggest moments of of rising up and taking his team with him against the best teams. But. Did you wear down? I think what you're saying certainly has to be considered a contributing factor in between Mike dantonio James harden, there does not seem to be a lot of will to change that. There's occasional words to indicate that they are aware of it and might change it and might do this in that. But nothing really ever seems to happen and truthfully this year between Gary Clark and Daniel house and all these random dudes off the street that they're playing they just haven't had the luxury of take giving him much time off right and look with C P three back. They're looks through NBA history. And there's one guy that size who at that age was still an all star caliber player. That's John Stockton. Who was playing twenty eight minutes a game C P three campy average thirty three thirty four minutes a game, and you have any expectations. If he's going to be available for the for the whole playoffs. I mean, obviously, he's got there's no ability issues. That's always going to be concerned. They've got to control his minutes, and you can't manage his minutes that tightly and then try to knock down James James is going to have to play thirty five. That's where you hope you can lose thirty hates. There's going to be in in the playoff games that matter. It's going to be forty. Plus. I just don't any other way. I mean in stakes close playoff games. He's going to have to hit forty and his and his forty minutes are are tougher. I would say maybe anybody else's just because you know. I mean, the guy dribble six hundred some odd times. A game. You know? I mean, he's working hard to get those thirty six thirty seven forty fifty sixty one points. And then look we all understand that the reputation on defense. But you know, I mean, he's does he take possessions off? Yes, everybody who has ever averaged thirty some odd points per game. I was probably would think does. But you know, the rockets invite teams kind of target him in the post where he's actually an elite definitive more and hold his own. He's at least active in terms of steals deflections ranks among the leaders there. So it's this ain't like, you know, the the I think the last Dwight year where you know, just night in night out James is just not giving a crap. He would he would fall into comas on the court like you would just the game would be going on. And all of a sudden, he would just have a glitch where he stood there staring into space in like, not doing anything. Those are more. Mostly gone. I think he's he's he's for what he does offensively. I think he's adequate defensively. And as you said, you know, the secret is now out his post defense is very good. He gets a lot of steals. He's physical. He communicates on switches. He's telling people where to go. He he is not botching as many switches hardly ever anymore as he was when they first surging. I think he's been for what he does offensively. I think he's been okay. Defensively up. Kevin pelton, our mutual friend and pocket score enthusiasts. "Or whatever seatgeek life's and event we have the tickets. Let's talk briefly about the rockets. The rockets are fifth in the west will tied for fourth with Portland thirty three and twenty three. How good are the rockets when they get fully just leave it there. How good do you think? The rockets are you know, I I still think that if the rockets are fully healthy that they have as good of a chance of anybody of challenge in the warriors, which is to say, not a very good chance at all. But. If if hardened can be this historically dominant if Capella can be the, you know, the force that he was before he before he hurt his thumb and he'll be back. Just right after the all star break then. And I still think that are now look they're nowhere near as good as last year. Chris Paul is not the same player the same. You know, outstanding co-star co superstar that he was last year. We'll see how Shumpert fits in. But obviously, the drop off from Trevor REEs to James Innes, you know, that didn't work. They've been very fortunate to add in the really early buyout market to two guys in in Austin rivers, and Kim three that if addressed their debt that were absolutely necessary to get through to stretch without P three to get through to stretch without without clink appel, but they went from a really really good defensive team last year to a pretty bad defense of team when he fifth, right? Twenty-fifth twenty in defensive rebounding, which is a weakness that we thought they would correct. And they took some schematic adjustments to try and correct. Like, there was some switches. They went from switch everything to switch most things, but not things that are really gonna murder us on the defensive glass and try to avoid switching certain people on certain other people. It hasn't worked there still terrible. Yeah. And so that's the thing. If James harden is this historically elite. I think they've still got at least a punchers chance. But the other thing about hardened being this historically elite with that kind of a usage rate is look this is a guy who has run out of gas in the playoffs before. And absolutely has to be considered a significant concern. Absolutely. And you hear people Pooh Pooh that everyone's tired. You know, how do we know sports sciences and uncertain thing? How do we don't just you just, you know, you watch them play the last two players, and I do think I don't know that I think, but he he he's had great playoff moments to people people forget a lot of those including dating Oklahoma City, the Spurs still trembling in fear over what he did to them when the funder made the finals..

"Jessie are said I think his passing is actually underrated. And I guess it's not underrated because the hardcore fans no, but just the sheer variety of them. And like I've written this before like some of them some of them. He's released point is so low to the ground and there they bounce so low off the ground be to avoid arms reaching down to get them that I've compared with like he's almost like skipping rocks on a pond like just the the sheer variety of what he can do as a passer. And now that Paul is back, and we'll talk about CPI who doesn't look the same, obviously. Yeah. His hardens last couple of games. He's normalized a little bit the balance between just going one on one for. Step Bax, drives and more pick and roll more passing more a little bit more variety. We can talk about whether that's good or bad for the only match up they care about which is the warriors. But I feel like with Chris Paul on the floor. His game. Now finds a more natural balance. I fall on the spectrum where I heard I think it was Saturday night. They had that the thunder rockets game were both hard. And and Paul George went bananas in Van Gundy said Van Gundy expressed my take on harden, which is I enjoy watching him to a moderate degree. I can appreciate the footwork and the stop and start in the insanity of the shots. He's making step back threes in the corner. Like, you can barely say in. You can spare Lee stay inbounds in the corner. Let alone take a step back and stay inbounds on and make a shot. Not only that we he gets the ball has got a guy in his face in the quarter. It's funny. I sit next to Jonathan Fager from the Houston chronicle a lot during games, and we'll just kinda mumbo each other. Like here comes to step back. Good defenders, no space doesn't matter. He's going to get that step back off. And it's gonna hit a lot of. But but what Jeff said is sort of the repetitiveness of it does get monotonous for me after a while. And that's why stylistically unhappy that Paul Baxter's a little bit more variety. Like, I like when they play a little bit faster dantonio actually has some really nice out of time out sets where he comes off two screens. It gets a handle like I like when they toss stuff like that. And because the other stuff gets but a little monotonous, but to your point. I don't think these things happen in real time. And we write about them you've written multiple pieces about the step back three. I just think it's hard to appreciate how revolutionary the shot is like it's completely changed. The game ended actually is sort of a natural evolution from what curry did for five years ago when he was exploding into the MVP race. We he would use the step back when big guys will get switched night. I meet he dribble in get them back and then step back for a three and that fake in kind of opened up the space he needed as a smaller guy who brings the ball up from like, he's sort of brings it a little lower before he releases it then harden he needed that space harden is like why I don't really even need. I don't really need to do this big fake. I can do this step against anybody. Anytime I want if I can make that forty percent of the time that's a good shot. So he's made last time I checked a couple of days ago. He's made a hundred and sixty. Nine step. He's already season..

"I know it's been banned from the hoop collective, we don't we don't have those kind of bells and whistles here. You know, this this is shoes string production. You know? I come. I come in here. And in the studio, it's all all the stuff for them. I may podcast is up here. We got nothing. We got. No, we got no low post low post Kucher law. We got nothing. Sorry. All right. That's fine. We'll just we'll just make do I've got a nice up under. So we'll make do with that Mikhail style up and under his go to move. I've got I've got that good old fashioned old man can't jump game. So yeah, I got a little bit of that. I used to imitate McKellen the driveway. That was my guy the up and under the up and under was my move that was my guy. So every once in a while I like to bring someone on just because they wrote a fun story. And you wrote a fun story. I believe it was over the weekend on James harden in which Mike dantonio used the word going ads, which really I mean, that's got. Is one of the highlights of your when he said the word going ads that you start laughing and say, well that's going in. Oh, absolutely. And I and I appreciate gonads I prefer the term Kahane's. But I know you do go ads is west Virginian for four Kahane's. It's direct translation. And so and locates, you know, you end up laugh and pretty much every time you talked to Mike, Dan, Tony. He's a fun dude to to deal with for what we do. And the story was about fun. It was about the fun in James Harden's game, which I would say you can you can disagree with me if you'd like I would say the vast majority of non rocket NBA fans don't see James Harden's game as being much fun. He is as unpopular a dominant score as I think we've seen in a long long time. There's all he does is hunt fouls and wine in about the walks, and this that and the other. And I think for all the hate, you know, people are missing out on a lot of artistry in terms of the step back some of the crazy path that he makes just to the rare. I mean, maybe unprecedented ability to to create one on one. But for whatever reason he's not a beloved figure in in in buildings around the league. Do you the impetus for the story is the idea? And this is why was kind of fun. Do you like watching James harden and play why don't people more people? Anyway. Like watching James harden play. Do you like watching 'em play? It seems like you do I do. And look is it always the is every game from him. Pretty no, absolutely not. But you can same was the case with Kobe. Who was beloved as a as a nice oh guy. Same is the case with with Alan Iverson and on down the list. I I love the fact that he has come. -pletely just obliterated the definition of. What's a good shot? For James harden, hunting twenty eight footstep Bax shots that would get ninety nine point nine percent of NBA players, much less. You know, anybody else benched? I mean, those are the shot. That's his go to move. It's his version of cream skyhook. And yeah, I do find it entertaining to watch a guy. You know, you know, it's coming the defender knows. That's coming. Boom, boom. You know, puts the ball on a on a string and after seven or eight nine ten. Twelve dribbles is is launching a step back from twenty eight feet and hitting high percentage that to me is entertaining. And then, you know, espec- he hasn't had cappella recently and free to a nice film. But it's not the same as that chemistry with cappelli, not the same hands, not quite as as long and all that stuff. But harden as a passer, especially with cappella, I do think is absolutely beautiful basketball. And you know, some of the forty. I five fifty foot dimes. He puts that hit Capella in traffic for dunks. You know, I yeah. I do enjoy watching those are the passes that take go neds is Mike, Dan..
