"The same barn and Bob Baffert likens it to having all the competitors in an event in the same locker room that you're competing against. So it adds a different dynamic to it. And so each and every year, we wonder who's going to be in that stall 40, which is reserved for the Derby winner and like we say, though we won't have a Derby winner this year all around that stall in the stakes barn. There's some real impressive horses here. And really when you look at it, no horses that are totally swinging for the fences, every horse going down the list has a reason to be in Baltimore in the third Saturday in May. And because of the setup that you just referenced with all of the Preakness contenders being in one barn, walking around one shed row, it is the most pleasant and the easiest race that you will cover from a media perspective, all year long, because that means that all of their connections are together too. So it's very easy to walk around in the morning, say hello to people, gather information, set up interviews, conduct interviews. It's wonderful from a media perspective too. And I've said and I know I share this opinion with many people in the media. The Preakness is by far the singular race that is so much fun to cover and to be part of from a media perspective. It's just fantastic. And it really, they keep it real at Tim lico and in Baltimore. I mean, there's not a lot of pretense. I mean, we remember back when the connections were here from California chrome and they kind of thought that they were outsiders looking in when they were in Louisville for the Derby. But when they came to Baltimore, they felt like they were the kings of horse racing. And that's really the case and a part of it is the stakes. And part of it is the track itself we've talked so many years about when is there going to be a new pimlico and things of that sort, but it's still the same old non renovated structure and you talk about the single stakes farm. They do a thing all week long in the lead up to the Preakness they call them the old hilltop sunrise tours where anybody can come to the track, sign up for a tour and walk out to those stakes barns and like you say, like the reporters, you see every trainer every horse. I mean, you could never do that at Churchill downs. You'd have to go to Barnes all over the track, but you can walk right up and you might see Chad Brown, Steve asked me, Kenny M peak, all standing together with Dwayne Lucas, having a conversation and you get out your camera and take that picture because it's so exciting. Yeah, and what we're saying doesn't diminish The Kentucky Derby doesn't diminish the Belmont stakes. They are unbelievable classics. But in terms of a media perspective and covering the event, it is so easy to do at pimlico. And really the Preakness has always been a big party. The Derby is a big party, but let me tell you, it goes to another level in Baltimore. Yeah, and it's really, they call it the people's race here and a part of that is because of the way the infield evolves to the Preakness originally when the infield was opened up to the Preakness, they played lacrosse games. Of course, the state game of Maryland, but kids were playing lacrosse while the thoroughbreds were running around the track. But it's evolved and now there are going to be two different stages for bands that are going to be going on during the day and things of that sort in the hospitality has they've taken it up another notch this year for the Preakness. Anyone watching on TV on NBC will see that there is now a two story turf side terrorist structure right there along the turf course near the finish line that they'll see. So even though we haven't gotten a new pimlico that that's still a couple of years down the road, they still try to take it up another notch and it makes for a great day of racing and it's neat that it comes off of all the pageantry and the pomp and circumstance and the bucket list of The Kentucky Derby. You come to Baltimore and it's the crab cakes and the inner harbor and the black eyed susans and then it's just the magnitude of the Belmont stakes in the city that never sleeps. The longest grandstand in all of sports. So it's the symmetry of the Triple Crown is really neat as you move from Louisville to Baltimore to New York. Nobody better. Scott wyckoff, WBA L and Baltimore. Scott really appreciate the visit here this morning. Enjoy the Preakness week and we'll look forward to catching up soon, my friend. Thanks so much, Mike. Love the show. Love the programming all week fantastic. All right, thanks, Scott. Scott wyckoff will continue to talk more about the Preakness stakes with the man who is going to be in the spotlight for much of the week that his Hall of Famer D Wayne Lucas who joins me coming up at 9 40 eastern. Coming up next, this week's edition of unsung heroes, I recognize and welcome to the program Jerry Dixon the groom of Kentucky Derby winner rich strike. It is a conversation you will not want to miss. That's right after your legends of the turf. He was the son of four Lee out of lady gal kanda by hasty road and was fold in 1970 the same year as secretaria. But, while secretary it began showing championship medal as soon as he began to train, this horse was very rapidly acquiring a marked reputation as an unmanageable robe. He was a huge cult who Verily early on displayed an ungentlemanly interest in Phillies, further he had the dangerous and painful habit of savaging any individual who dared come close enough to him. His owners, the lazy of French, had him gelded to try to correct the problem, and though that surgical process made him at least trainable, he never got to the racetrack till he was three. He broke his maiden in his second start and had second place finishes in the Hutchinson sakes and the Florida Derby. But he ran a distant fourth while priced at 28 to one to secretariat, and that colt's record smashing one in The Kentucky Derby. This horse came into his zone in a sophomore season on the track in the fall with convincing scores in the romer and the discovery handicapped at aqueduct, and that as the saying goes was the start of something big indeed. At four, his star shone brightly in the heavens of thoroughbred racing. He began that campaign with four straight wins. He was a strikingly handsome, huge bay standing 17 plus hands, and one could easily pick him out of a crowd of horses at any distance. He did have a gift, a gift for the crowd pleasing late charge had made him very popular with the public and horsemen were awed by his incredible versatility to the conclusion of his four year old campaign he won the 12 furlong Woodward by a neck and three weeks later came back to soundly whip the nation's premier sprinters and the 7 for a long bossburg handicap winning it by three. And just three weeks after that, he rolled to a devastating win over a solid field of 9 distant sources in the grueling two mile jockey club gold cup. In that year of 1970, he won three eclipse awards, best older horse or gelding, best sprinter and horse of the year. He followed that year with a two other scores as source of the year, both in 1975 and 1976, and both those years he won two legs of the handicap Triple Crown. The second year just missing the triple and losing by a heartbreaking note to foolish pleasure in the suburban. His 1976 campaign is final on the racetrack found him chalking up one of the most remarkable victories in the chronicle Daniels of racing in the Marlboro cup. Honest pleasure was when receipt of 18 pounds from this horse was a burden with a weighty impulse of 137 pounds..

"That. That's that's the point. Pretty much The the big prep season portion taking care of at Santa Anita we still have got Another set of Important races coming up this weekend in New York any other any other things that there was so much to keep track of J. But anything else from the weekend Keen Linden and Belmont all anything that caught your eye. There was just so much it was. You know it's like sensory overload. I. was just crazy between the races at Tim Lico and and the Santa. Anita that at Belmont and obviously it's opening weekend Keeneland I. I, mean your head with spending by the end of the day just trying to. Keep up with with all the races coming fast and furious that Shit. But I mean the ones that. That interested me the most just that I took greatest satisfaction of where the two mile grass races at keeneland on Saturday 'cause you know I just really like Paulo Oboe. He's just a wonderful person and you know for both his business and for his family decided it was best to leave California and relocate to Kentucky and it was just great to see him back in the winner's circle with a high class source like I've are winning the Shag while Mile and I I hope this source can come back and run another big race in the. Breeders. Cup. Just really really happy for him. He's just he's a really really good person and he's one big races. You know champions, Farda Megan the oaks and all and. His business was down here and he just felt it was best to relocate. Young family at the time and. You know I was really happy for him and then. Goes great defeat when he come back and run like we know she can I just love watching her run. I just think her turn of foot is just so much fun. To Watch and and see her get back to her best form was was really satisfying as well. So those are the ones from. From out of town and then. Like I said, you know just seeing Mo- fours win was was great but there were just so many. Races over the weekend, you know watching keep track of the to just pick out of those. Few is seems like they're giving short shrift to. You know to so many of the other big races that happened you know Sunday as well. But those are the ones that off the top of my head trying to stand up. And I'm glad you. Cited Paulo Bowie. A favorite of mine to going back to I was at Saratoga when far too meager won. The Alabama and And I suppose I was there for the oaks to I'm thinking about it on the. Friday. Before Derby. But I I certainly you know certainly vividly remember her winning and and. Pico Centrale right that was. That was another just monster that When when, when he would get when he would get one good he would you know he could. He could keep him. Good. Oh Yeah. No there's and you know I would expect that to happen with. This is obviously on South American time and it's still very lightly race. You know you would think that. They're still. Plenty of upside there he's not at the end of a long career is I of so I I really hope that this is the. Start something good for him. That and I'm just looking that was his sixth grade one win. In North America and Farda Amiga with the OAKS and the Alabama and Pecos trowel went on that tear the Carter the Vasbert. He was a really good horses. Tremendous true best. Clips Award. Just I saw him a bunch of times particularly thinking about that season I might I'd have to go to my the my my traveling secretary, my my buddy fell who has got a better memory than I do when it comes to all the you know all the big day races we would go to. Fill seems to remember every single I I don't know how he does I can't for for me some of kind of blurs together 'cause I was drinking in those days. That's a contributing factor. I suppose I suppose j some of those stories I guess some of the stories probably they they may be. Embellished by now that I think about this, I never never really occurred to me that Some of them, some of them might be tinged much like the color of the liquids I was binding. Right. Jay. We gotta gear up There's there's no it's a relentless assault on the senses we gotta get ready for breeders. Cup and. For such year that seemed like it was having trouble gaining definition I. It really does feel like we're in for a treat and a lot of a lot of the divisions. The the classic is. Healed is there have been some really classic over the years but right now that classic field to me when rank right up there among the the best we've ever had in terms of the depth of quality you know of always interested in seeing the. You know the two year old races and interested in seeing you know Jackie's warrior can win the champagne this week and then head onto the. You know to to the juvenile as always fun to watch the two year old races and. Now that. He's back in good form and then interested to see what euros come over for the grass races which always adds spice to the event so. There's there's a lot to look forward to it's it should be what you'd be a good Breeders, Cup. Well, Jay thanks as always I always we'll talk to Marty. Probably get Marty as early actually as. Maybe maybe we'll wait for the keeneland week. 'cause we got the Queen Elizabeth I think this weekend and Couple of others but the Jessica Tomorrow still got to get the Marty's postscript to preakness but As always, thanks for tremendous extended coverage It's. Your this year, the the triple crown season. Iran long. Long overtime. Four months Overstayed its welcome by four months we worked in the end. I was a great way to end it with that preakness and like I said that's Media Page down to the breeders got usually got A. Triple Crown and you take a little bit of a breather and then you get into the summer racing thing and then you have the Breeders Cup but but not this year and hopefully, not ever again hopefully, we can get back to. You know the regular schedule that we've we've liked the breeders cups coming up. I'm really looking forward to that speaking of that we you know with the rates, we do comprehensive updates of every breeders cup race, and that that's going to start the this week. You'll start seeing all the stories that we have from all our correspondents on every single breeders, Cup ways with perspective fields and things of that nature. So it's it'll be you can start going to school on these Breeders Cup races. Now we'll be doing that and as always will survey all of the correspondence and. Track our way to Kaitlin and the looking forward actually to. Last. my last. Or the first caitlyn Breeders Cup was interrupted I I at the. The head to Connecticut my father had a heart attack. So I finished the show at noon on on that Friday and got my car wasn't there for Saturday And Yeah. So looking forward to a complete breeders, Cup weekend at Keyword this year so. Very Good Sir j I appreciate it and Probably talk next week. Right? There's nothing did nothing there's just. There's no, there's no weekend pre not California wise I think I think it should be all day running all the time for your Friday show because. The focus is going to be rightly on on Belmont Park, Saturday exactly. Exactly. So we'll have the we'll have the Dave rennick special. Jay Ribbon, everybody, d., R., F., ribbon, and the coverage of. "Ran A. Career best at the opportune time. The one two years ago. She was further back early than You know the you might have wanted and you know she. She was commencing a rally was making up ground and it was too late. Anyway just was not you know stylistically and and the way the race unfolded It just it didn't happen but. Every other time Just was. was terrific. kind of got excited about her. Back in in twenty eighteen. as a as a three year old when we got to see her. On a couple of different occasions at Santa Anita. Winning for Bill Spar. Started off and a good third in the Oaks beyond the. Girl and wonder. And It, just. I I don't know how you can diminish take anything away from any of her. Of Her efforts. Midnight be so. Night, loot she was she was. Sound and Consistent. Really just you know you look at. Looking at the. Space between races she never you know she really. Kinda just. Click the long. After after her two year old year. She got beat. It's funny show Dream Tree Beater those noses in in inner debut. Live interestingly, her career actually parallels Hollywood story although much more complete and with way more wins but like Hollywood story. appeared in a maiden race and then ran in nothing but stakes the rest of her career. which is something Hollywood story did. And broke her maiden in upstate like Hollywood story and November to January from two to three. And then from three to four same thing November to January, she started last year and that Houston Ladies Classic and then went on a tremendous terror ladies classic is Airy Apple Blossom. The. Phipps, the Molly Pitcher, the personal lines in the Bell Day. Just just Just a a fabulous. Fabulous. Racemare. this year. came out and went to the race Saudi Arabia where she still alternately be declared the winner I suppose that is pending and in fact, if you didn't see that I did see where the. The Saudi the Jockey Club, of Saudi Arabia, said that they will. Wait until the legal. Decisions involving Jason Service are a complete before a make any. Purse Award. On that On on the win. So. Midnight be so. Seven point. Five million essentially and holding. And pending. Let's put it that way. So looking forward, the expect, maybe hear from Jeff Bloom late in the show. And you know the Jeff made all the. appropriate. Acknowledgments. Tinged with sadness because. It just seemed like you were on everything seemed like it was on A. Path to this, you know monster is match up in the in the distaff still going to be. Still going to be good but. Certainly you know. The one of the star attractions but great job by really every between bill spar and his team and and Steve Asmussen Scott Blasi and. Their team And I then you know most of the. Most, of the major. Divisions of the team. Had A hand in in. In. Looking after her. Scott and Darren Fleming and. Toby sheets and New York I mean everybody him. In there you know on their shed row they're asking us in shadow at one point or another midnight be so and a lot of fans you saw the outpouring of appreciation for her. Twenty to start career. That's a nice. That's a nice full career and That jeep she'll be she'll dot. How does she? How do you keep her out of the hall of fame? Few other news and notes before we reach for Dick at Powell and I mentioned Marty. Let me give you the lineup Dick. I WANNA get Tony in because PIMLICO were we'll explain to you we do every single year about. Tim Lico and and how. How the what the origins were of the old wives tale about quote unquote tight turns I it it. May Have seemed that way because of the way horses corner but it has nothing to do with the with the turns and everything to do with the banking and we'll let tony explain that I call on him for that every single year. To explain the the Banking AG Pimlico, not as banked as your. Typical Oval. and. That's why it's a little more difficult for horses to to corner. At the. Local In addition to Dick and Tony Steve Haskins, Mardi with his full as I told you reaching and and Jeff Lynne. That's what I'm expecting. There you go Couple of. Quick. News hits the word came from Dave rennick Iran Ortiz who was on the shelf anyway with some days came up positive with with Kobe test. So he is self isolating and is out until at least October eighth. So at least a week, today's the first. So at least until next Thursday and they'll have to produce you know the probably the appropriate test. So I guess not showing symptoms but positive so. Knock on wood? Rod. You know I've been. Stopped I mean obviously everybody's dealing with look at look at what's going on in the NFL The digital sale today and I forgot to mention this yesterday got this digital sales ring today and bidding. Let me refresh see if the bidding is. is underway, but there's a handful of the. Of Racing Age. The broodmare prospects and and horses racing kinds of things plus some yearlings. So KEENELAND DIGITAL DOT COM if you haven't checked out want to mention. Do the jockey. Hong Kong Jockey Club stuff with deck in a little bit The ARC will save. I mentioned Erat. Want to get this in because there's not a big window for it Valmont and Niagara Bats. You've got a Belmont PIMLICO challenge on Saturday if you haven't seen this and it's a three hundred dollar buy in you bet on a minimum before Belmont races and three pimlico races. Maximum of three PIMLICO races you can bet on more Belmont races than four if you want to Building your bankroll hundred seventy five goes to the bank roll one, twenty, five to the prize pool.
