She was chosen by the Guardian as one of the world's one hundred most inspiring women. Dr Bloom is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. And if that wasn't enough Eileen was elected to the whole of mountaineering. Excellent Hey uh keep me from getting. You remember the day where we're sitting right now. I mean we're sitting in Tilden Park on. Trail called seaview with a wonderful view of the bay. While flowers greenhills Gorgeous California. And why so many people on the trail today? Well it turns out that everyone has been ordered to stay home or go outdoors and everything's closed so there are a lot more people outdoors than usual. Which is a good thing and you walk every single day. Tell us about that routine and and how you got into it. Well I do pretty intense work and I work really hard because I have so many opportunities and I've discovered that if every day I take a walk with friends or colleagues or sometimes even the chemical industry executives with whom I do not see eye to eye. It's extremely good for my physical health. My mental health and my work. You have an incredible history of climbing of mountaineering. Have you always had a passion for climbing and mountaineering? How did that start? I was raised by incredibly cautious and conservative Orthodox Jewish grandparents in Chicago and was not allowed to do anything and I push push push to just be able to take swimming lessons and so I guess I started early with coming up with things I really wanted to do and then pushing to be able to do them. When I was a Grad student at Berkeley I heard about an expedition to Denali Mount McKinley. The Highest Mountain in North America. And I'd been climbing a lot with my friends from Reed College and had climbed higher than Denali in Peru and apply gone the trap and was told that women could go as far as base camp to help with the cooking. And when I called to say well I've climbed higher than Denali. They said. Yeah you were the only woman. You probably didn't do your share you know. Women really can't time high mountains. I wonder if a team of all women could climb high mountains and I found five other women and we went and kind to Nali ourselves. All women were the first all women's team and indeed not only. Did we climb it? But our leader had altitude sickness and became unconscious just below the summit and at that point. I was twenty five. I was the deputy leader because I'd organized and suddenly I was in charge of our Denali expedition with an unconscious person at twenty thousand feet and a big Arctic storm. Coming in and We actually made a stretcher dragged her down the mountain and it was really empowering to me. I mean I'd had a lot of negative messages in my childhood about what I couldn't couldn't do and I thought wow we got grace down from Denali Alive. We can do anything. We dream up so that was really inspiring for me to realize sick. We can all do things and we believe possible when we have to then. You just kept going though. That wasn't the end of your mountaineering. No I love being in the mountains. I love being outdoors. I love being here. I seem to like challenge. I was on a nineteen. Seventy six expedition climbed Everest. We were the second American expedition in those days. Hard to believe we have the whole mountain to ourselves and I climbed to nearly twenty five thousand feet and on the way back. I thought at that point all the world's highest mountains over eight thousand meters. That's kind of a magic height They all had been cleaned by men but no woman had ever climbed eight thousand meters and people were saying maybe women couldn't and I thought well we climbed. Denali got twenty four Everest. Let's give him a chance. So on my way back from I I applied for a permit for Anna Purna one and it was the first eight thousand meter peak ever climbed. It has the highest fatality rate. And it's now considered the hardest climb and we did not know that and so In nineteen seventy eight. I did organize an an all women's expedition and we were successful. We were the first women and indeed the first Americans to climb out of that reinforced my belief that we can all do seemingly impossible things and I'd say now is a good time for all of us to be doing seemingly impossible things because it's it's tough right now. Your experience shows me and the tough things that I've done in my life is that you can move past them that they're not insurmountable and even if they are to continue moving forward with with those challenges. I've never been above eight thousand meters. What what is it like? I mean the physicality of losing that oxygen. Do you get addicted to that. It feels like a very rarefied club of people that understand and know something that the rest of us don't well first of all it's the most beautiful place ever being above timberline with clouds on your feet the extreme beauty and peace and so it is so beautiful. But you know being here until the park is so beautiful to you. Don't have to be on top of Anna Perna and there's a huge amount of focus. You have a goal and you get a great team and everybody shares ICAL. But I'm always kind of looking for family and a climbing expedition is like a family but perhaps better family dynamics and some families have so you have a family of people all focused on a goal. And you're in a beautiful place using every bit of your physical energy but your mental energy problem solving. So it's it's super focused. Every since I became a mom didn't want to risk my life because if you know this but the chances of dying about one in ten climbing those mountains so it seriously dangerous so for me as a mom. I don't want to risk my life on the other hand what I'm doing now which is reducing harmful chemicals that are in our bodies and our products and our planet so it's got a very similar similar feeling of of getting a great team family of people who share a common goal and then persevering through avalanches and storms and Yetis. And what have you

"On the evening of February Sixth Hewitt and his guests partways confident. That justice Bradley would vote in favor of the Democrats and Hewitt's words. We parted therefore with the assurance that all further doubt as to the presidency was at rest the next morning on February seventh Bradley read his opinion as Hewitt explained. I attended the delivery of the judgment the next day without the slightest intimation from any quarter the judge. Bradley had changed his mind. In fact the reading of the Pinion until the few concluding paragraphs were reached was strictly in accordance with report of Mr Stevens in his book. The secret history of the eighteen. Seventy six election Hewitt offers an explanation for Bradley's last-minute Reversal according to Hewitt after Mr Stevens left the judge around midnight two prominent Republicans New Jersey Senator and president. Grant's Navy secretary. George M Robeson called on Justice Bradley in the middle of the night and pressured him to decide Florida. In Hayes. Favor Justice. Bradley had called a recess on February sixth wanting time to think over his decision the judge and fantasy denied that he met with Stevens or anyone else for that matter regardless of the motivation on Wednesday February seventh and two thirteen PM Justice Bradley rose and gave his opinion as future. President James Garfield explained his diary. All were intent because Bradley held the casting vote. All we're making manifest effort to appear unconcerned. It was curious study to watch the faces as he read. It was ten minutes before it became evident that he was against the authority to hear extrinsic evidence. Bradley held at even if evidence of fraud existed. Congress did not have the constitutional jurisdiction to intervene and neither did the electoral commission. Bradley maintain the Congress's only role in a presidential election was counting electoral votes. So bradlee sided with the rest of the Republicans on the panel in an eight seven decision house. Democrats did their best to stall the process. Bradley was lambasted in the Press. Accused of partisanship. Was even the target of death threats. But regardless on February Ninth Hayes one Florida one week later Louisiana on February Twenty Third Oregon with three of the four contested states decided only South Carolina remained. Unresolved Still House. Democrats did not give up. James Garfield wrote that Democrats filibustered with all their might to prevent the completion of the count. And as these Democrats do their best to stop the process. Republican candidate Rutherford B. Hayes wrote in his diary. There is still some doubt but apparently very little of the result fearing that House Democrats would never give up the fight. Hayes wondered. I would like to get support from good men of the south late rebels. How to do it is the question ultimately therefore the question of the eighteen seventy six election would be decided not on the floor of Congress but behind closed doors at a hotel in Washington. Dc leaders from both parties would come together to break the filibuster strike. What would come to be called the compromise of eighteen seventy seven? The compromise of eighteen seventy seven had been months in the making as far back as December of eighteen. Seventy six with the blessing of Rutherford B Hayes. Friends of his candidacy had served as intermediaries between southern Democrats largely former wigs and northern Republicans. Eventually terms were reached among other items southern Democrats wanted federal troops removed from the South especially Louisiana South Carolina. They wanted a southerner in his cabinet and they wanted Hayes to proclaim his inaugural address that the federal government would no longer enforce reconstruction laws in the south. In exchange. Hayes would get the White House and Republican congressman. James Garfield would be elected speaker of the House with southern support. The creation of the electoral commission had temporarily put these talks on hold but after Justice Bradley voted with Republicans on Florida. The negotiations restarted and late February with the Democrats filibuster in full effect. Both sides were ready to strike a deal on the evening of February twenty sixth nine politicians five Republicans and four Democrats met in secret at the warmly hotel in Washington to finalize the arrangement in exchange for Democrats agreeing to stop the filibuster. Republicans assured Democrats that reconstruction in the south would end once. Hayes was sworn in including the removal of all federal troops from the south with a few handshakes. The deal was done the next day. South Carolina was awarded to Hayes at four ten am on March second. The official announcement came. Hayes was America's nineteenth president on March fifth as took the oath of office and began his presidency. Under a cloud of controversy he was called his fraudulently and rather fraud. Behave as though. Hayes claimed that the conflicting claims to his presidency had been settled. Many Democrats didn't see it that way. Jeremiah black the legal counsel for the Democrats accused the commission of having a partisan bias raging. We can never expect such a thing as an honest election again at present. Have US down and under your feet but wait a little while. Retribution will come for generations. Many Democrat friendly historians would call the eight hundred seventy six contests a stolen election. Many attempt to cast it as the fraud of the century. But that assessment ignore certain realities if black Americans had been allowed to vote freely in the eighteen. Seventy six contest. Rutherford Hayes would easily have carried all Louisiana South Carolina and Florida and he likely would have carried Mississippi Alabama to the evidence of Republican. Fraud does exist. But Sodas Evidence of Democrats Games use intimidation violence and their own fraud to keep black Americans away from the polls be only real. Loser of the eighteen. Seventy six contest was black America. The compromise of eighteen seventy seven had put an end to reconstruction and install the Republican in the White House but it also marked the beginning of the era of Jim Crow by striking their Faustian bargain. Democrats and Republicans doomed black Americans in the south to a terrible fate journalists. Bob Becker would later say Jim. Crow Law Strip blacks of basic rights. Despite landmark civil rights laws many public schools were still segregated black still face barriers to voting violence by white racists continued following the election of eighteen. Seventy six many Republicans turned a blind eye as Democrats in the south sought to undo the progress of the fourteenth and fifteenth amendments. It would be almost one hundred years before black. Americans in the South truly earned the right to vote not all Republicans approved of the compromise of eighteen. Seventy seven one worth mentioning was congressman James Garfield. He had attended the meeting at Wernle's hotel that helped put record behaves in the White House but walked out. Prior to the eighteen. Seventy six election president. Hayes had already announced his intention to only serve one term. It may not have mattered because by the end of his tenure in the White House many Republicans had turned on his administration in large part because of Hayes decision to make good on the compromise of eighteen seventy seven and withdraw federal troops from the South and the election of Eighteen. Eighty Republicans were turned to the very man who had walked out on the compromise. Secure his party's nomination. James Garfield would have to battle a divided. Republican Party crowded field of nominees and an unwanted October surprise on the next episode of Weiqing. The election of eighteen eighty after Rutherford B Hayes steps aside James Garfield rises to become the Republican nominee to win. The White House Garfield Feis to unite his party and best a war hero Democrat. All against the backdrop of the gilded age an era infamous for greed graft and corruption. "In Washington. There was tremendous pressure for the election to be resolved before Wednesday December six the federally mandated meeting of the Electoral College. This was a challenge in Florida especially a massive state of remote counties with no telegraphs or railroads. These counties would likely be slow in delivering the returns and delay the process. There was also concern on both sides of the aisle. That the impending vote recounts Louisiana South Carolina and Florida would be tainted by fraud and corruption and both parties accused the other of cheating before the process had even begun. Republicans control the state governments and all three states and so they control the leadership of the canvassing boards from any Democrats. That fact alone made the idea of a fair recount. All but impossible on the other side. Republicans complained that thousands of black voters had been kept from the polls as a result of voter suppression and violent intimidation on November thirteenth Hayes. Road to a fellow Republican. I believe that with a fair election. In the south are electoral vote would reach two hundred and that we should have a large popular. Majority fraud was indeed rampant in South Carolina. As an example the total number of votes counted far exceeded the total number of eligible voters to account for this. Republicans accused Democrats of dispatching operatives from other states to illegally vote Democrats accuse Republicans of paying Black Americans to vote multiple times in South Carolina's Edgefield County. White Democrats had forcibly stopped hundreds of black Americans from voting and when the votes were counted. There were two thousand more total votes cast than the entire adult male population. Republicans had one Edgefield County in every election since eighteen. Sixty eight but in eighteen seventy six Democrats won by a margin of three thousand votes in New Orleans. Democrats accused Republicans of illegally striking thousands of Democrats from the voter registration list in one Florida county. It was discovered that several hundred Republican voters were not people who existed. The truth is during the contested election of eighteen. Seventy six. Both parties were guilty of corruption in all three states. The loyalty of local officials was often for sale. Political operatives from both parties sought to buy their loyalty and the votes of their districts on November twentieth. The state appointed canvassing born in Louisiana began their work when the head of that. Board Republican declared that the recount would be conducted in secret. Democrats cried foul in the press but there was little else they could do. After weeks of discussion and debate the canvassing board would make their final judgment. Louisiana and eight electoral votes would be given to the Republican hase. On November twenty first the South Carolina Canvassing Board ruled. Hayes had won the state by less than one thousand votes Democrat Lawyers Press for the Supreme Court of South Carolina to intervene charging that the Republican control board had illegally thrown out votes to sway the recount for Hayes but their cries for intervention were fruitless under South Carolina Law. The State Supreme Court had no jurisdiction of the canvassing board so with no legal recourse available. Tilden and the Democrats would be forced to concede South Carolina Hayes giving him seven more electoral votes Democrats. Last hope would come down to the state of Florida in Florida. The Republican controlled canvassing board took steps to ensure the integrity of the recount. Local officials were interrogated to ensure the counts. Were honest and not bought but too many. The boards attempted oversight was an exercise in futility. One Republican lawyer wrote to his wife. It is terrible to see the extent to which both parties go in their determination to win. Nothing is so common as the resort to perjury money and intimidation can obtain any required statement on November twenty ninth with Republican and Democratic Lawyers. Present the Florida canvassing board finished recount. Hayes had defeated Tilden by a razor-thin margin twenty four thousand three hundred twenty seven to twenty four thousand two hundred eighty four just forty three votes but the election was still too close to call so the canvassing board in Florida conducted another recount and deliberated until December fifth one day before the Electoral College deadline after tossing out illegal dubious or suspicious votes in both Republican and Democratic counties canvassing board officially declared the state of Florida for Rutherford B Hayes in the final count. Hayes won by less than one thousand votes when the Electoral College convened on December. Sixth things got even more complicated all three too close to call states South Carolina Louisiana and Florida sent conflicting set of electoral votes to Washington and then a fourth stake on in on the Act Democrat officials in Oregon disputed Hayes victory there and so at the urging of party bosses the Oregon Governor Democrat Lafayette Grover and given one of Hayes electoral votes to tilden with four states. Doubt the issue would fall to Congress with the country on the verge of a constitutional crisis over a disputed election. Congress would create a bipartisan panel comprised of senators members of the House and Supreme Court. Justices this panel would be charged with reaching a decision that both parties would accept as final in the end the outcome of the election and the fate of the nation. We come down to the opinion of one man. Socio Justice Joseph P Bradley.

"Samuel Tilden was a rising star in the empire state who had earned reputation for taking on corruption in New York and the early eighteen seventies. He had gone toe to toe with a notoriously corrupt New York. Politician named William M tweed also known as boss. Tweed the leader of Tammany Hall. The Democratic Party Machine New York. Tilden had won the battle and had effectively driven Tweeden and his bought and paid for politicians out of power. That victory helped tilden win the governorship of New York in eighteen seventy four and a position him well as a candidate in the presidential election of eighteen. Seventy six on June twenty seventh of that year less than two weeks after the nomination rougher behaves the Democratic National Convention met in Saint Louis Missouri and United Behind Popular Ticket Samuel J Tilden of New York and his running mate. The Beloved Indiana Governor Thomas Hendricks on the campaign trail Tilden supporters attacked Republicans with continue charges of corruption for the centerpiece of the Tilden campaign was the issue of Reconstruction Tilden called. Republican reconstruction a systematic in insupportable miss government imposed on the south and defending themselves against these charges. Many Republicans felt caution was important by eighteen. Seventy six many Americans were experiencing what might be called moral fatigue on issues related to race inequality too many Republicans using the federal government to protect black voters in the south with starting to look like a losing issue. Despite the shifting sands of public opinion during the final years of grant's presidency civil unrest in the south was still a problem. Even after the ratification of the fifteenth amendment. The rights of black voters were constantly under siege as one black congressman from Mississippi explained. The Democrats Ripois to carry every southern state not by the power of the ballot but by an organized system of terrorism and violence and by the summer of eighteen seventy six. The violence in South Carolina had reached a boiling point an armed insurgency was wreaking havoc. Hell bent on. Suppressing the Republican vote in keeping Black Americans away from the polls President Grant had repeatedly requested Congressional Authority to intervene but worried about the political fallout. Republicans in Congress had not agreed determined to maintain order though grant stood before the Senate in July Eighteen. Seventy six and bemoaned the disgraceful and brutal slaughter of on offending men at the town of Hamburg South Carolina. Grant decried the murders and massacres of innocent men. For OPINION SAKE ON ACCOUNT OF COLOR. He was committed to his mission. This time grant did not wait for congressional approval in August. He ordered his war secretary to position troops and have them stand at the ready to march on the south but the threat of federal troops did not stop the insurgents. Republican governor of South Carolina told The New York Times the lawlessness terrorism violence far exceed in extent an atrocity. Any statements yet made public. The governor wrote grant pleading for help three weeks before Election Day. Grant answered him. By signing a proclamation. The gave an ultimatum. The armed insurgents in South Carolina had three days to disperse or grants troops would remove them by force for Republican nominee. Rutherford B Hayes grants. Proclamation was a political disaster for the entire Election Cycle Democrats have been warning voters that Republicans would use the federal government to trample on the rights of the southern states by signing the proclamation granted fundamentally proved one of the Democrats main talking points for many Republicans. This proclamation was the last Straw. Some went so far as to switch parties and declare their support for Tilden so going into Election Day all signs pointing to a tilden victory and Republican route. It's November seventh. Eighteen seventy six in New York City at the Fifth Avenue Hotel Republican headquarters and the election of eighteen seventy six. The campaign office is empty. Save one Ma clancy four-year-old stenographer and republican clerk. Who is hard at work burning the midnight oil? The campaign is nearly over. Clancy is busy packing of files records and campaign documents. He's dejected early. Reports indicated that Tilden would defeat Hayes in a landslide. The rest of clancy's Republican colleagues have already given up and gone home then. Clancy's night gets worse when his office door swings open revealing. Daniel sickles the fifty seven year old American minister to Spain. Sickles has a war veteran. He lost his leg in the civil war and somewhere along the way he lost his tact to as he hobbles into the room bellows obnoxiously. Well how do we lose? What are the latest returns? You will find them on the desk. Mr Chandler that's Zach Chandler the Republican National Committee Chairman and. Where is all ZAC? He took two large bottles of whiskey and went upstairs to his room. Sickles crosses over to Chandler's desk as he begins to rise through the stack of papers something catches his high. Sickles produces a pair of glasses reads it slowly carefully monitored under his breath. Oh No it's close. Pardon clancy you fool look. The election is incredibly close if my figures are correct based on fair probabilities. Hayes is the winner. Am I correct in my assumption that you've been to the bottle this evening but sickles doesn't answer instead bolts into the hallway outside at the end of the hall sees Republican Chester a Arthur the New York collector of the Port Arthur? Msrp A MOLA PLEASE. What is it signals? See for yourself. Look at these returns. Arthur takes a piece of paper in his hands as he reads. The words is is sparked with new life. Mr Arthur if you advise I have no doubt Mr clancy will send a telegram requesting that the state with close returns should not concede. We have a chance Mr get to work them Mr Cycles on election night clancy did send a telegram to Party officials and South Carolina Louisiana and Florida the message read with your state shore for Hayes. He is elected. Hold your state in the election of eighteen seventy six. Tilden won the popular vote by quarter million balance but with only one hundred eighty four electoral votes. He was one shy. The one eighty five required for victory. Three states were too close to call Louisiana South Carolina and Florida. Hayes had one hundred sixty six electoral votes. If all three contested states and their combined nineteen electoral votes went to Hayes. He could pull off an upset with just one more electoral vote than Tilden. But the outcome of the election was uncertain at best and reports in the press added to the confusion on November ninth. The New York Times headline read the battle one a Republican victory in the nation on the other side of the city. The New York Sons November ninth headline called it the opposite way. Tilden is elected the Democrats jubilant immediately. Both parties went to work. Dispatching senators representatives lawyers and political operatives to each of the three contested states. Shortly after election. Day Grant received an urgent telegram from Zach Chandler. The chair of the Republican National Committee and his Secretary of the Interior Chandler had dispatched a train carrying Republican. Aides south to verify election returns the train though have been knocked off the and inactive. What some called Ku Klux Ism Chandler urgently. Roy Grant there is no doubt of our majority. If we can secure an honest canvas but the indications are that violence is to be freely resorted to we shall need an army to protect us. Grants response was swift on November tenth. He ordered General Sherman the head commander to dispatch troops to the south to protect the integrity of the election. Grant wrote to Sherman. Should there be any grounds of suspicion of fraudulent counting? On either side. It should be reported and denounced at once. Either party can afford to be disappointed in the result but the country cannot afford to have the result tainted by the suspicion of illegal or false returns if grant was trying to protect the integrity of the election. Many Democrats did not see it that way to them. It looked like grant was using the powers of the presidency to steal the election from Tilden on November eleventh j Dixon Burns prominent doctor in South Carolina wrote to the editors of the New York world if the spirit of liberty still survives the issue is tilden or civil. War Burns was not alone in his thinking. A multitude of Democrats sent telegrams to Tilden and Democratic Party leaders promising to arm themselves party leaders felt. The election was being stolen all they had to do. Democratic supporters pledged.
"Name is Michael Booth Monica's Nichols Man in Denmark and the author of a book about the Nordic region the almost nearly perfect people for this special edition of the foreign desk in association with Nordic Council of Ministers up into meet as a few of these Nordic food campaigns we start in Oslo where I channel top cat and went rummaging for my dinner in the Dustbins Marie Primary Michael Nice to meet you and I am climate activist. I started dumpster diving because food waste is really big issue and in Norway there's way too much food in all the grocery shops and they throw a so much food and so when I started university three years ago we met up with some friends than we thought that we would try to see how much there's actually and the dumpsters and realized that we could kind of actually live of that. Do you live from the old. What percentage would you say. The food you eat comes from dumpster diving two years ago that was at least maybe seventy percent of my food from dumpster. Diving was the best thing you ever found in a dumpster. we got this a lot of cheese one type and remained these amazing pizzas and we found a lobster when time was gonna ask you about. There must be some kind of categories of food that just don't don't studying seafood is the one that springs to mind. It wasn't good. I really wanted to cut get for my my boyfriend but Sam it was sad evening. Didn't it didn't work out at all and it's eleven o'clock at night. Do you always go dumpster diving having so late in the day well dumpster diving is in technically legal is not technically illegal either but if you want to go you have to go after the shops. APPS are closed. We'll all the legalities. Trespassing laws foods in a trashcan is anyone's right well technically. The shop doesn't own it because they're selling it to the trash company but the trash company doesn't own it until they pick it up and that's why it's okay to take it owes lose probably the most genteel issue of the Nordic capital cities. What do your friends and family say about this. Most of my friends dumpster dive. Maybe have strange friends myself. I Self I'm a vegetarian except for the food dumpster dive so I eat meat as long. It's from a dumpster or supposed to be thrown away from you. Take some risks sometimes of course at just don't take it with meets. People just need to get used to eating food that has gone past the expiry date or just looks a bit. S- off so this is the back of a famous Bran Dan famous chain of supermarkets in the Nordic countries. We were not allowed to name it. Okay so Jacki off and there's three large green dumpsters in front of us some strawberries that you look quite nice done yeah they do and you shouldn't eh what's touching the button because they clean these with a lot of chemicals so it's a bit dangerous. Let's check the others especially for food waste. There's a whole dumpster full of watermelons really nice melon. Oh like flat breads. It's like traditional region flat flat breads made out of potato this is this is the typical dumpster food things could government to to to cut food waste annoy annoy. There's an organization called the future in our hands. That's working to get food waste law so that it's like it would be illegal. Nicholson throwaway fruit they have it in France already in some other countries all shops would donate their leftover food to charities a lot autism education and you can do it in school but actually adults throw away the most fruit okay my adventures with. Oslo climate activist. Maria Hassle Hassle. I nine hasn't turned into a full on dumpster diver but it is a powerful way to draw attention to the fact that globally we waste about a third of the food we produce but what about human sustainability oppressing issue in the Nordic countries for many years has been the integration of migrants refugees with their famous large-scale. Welfare states the Nordic countries need. I need to figure out ways to integrate newcomers. In Malibu Sweden's third city and ambitious new social distortion project is taming to do just that but tilden bog is an urban farm a catering company restaurant and educational center run for and by immigrants to the city the project uses food and farming directly as a societal change maker and it's just completed its final phase of development in Malmo's Rosengard is

"So this is about the bears. Yeah. The Democrats in the Illinois state legislature, then elected Davis to be one of the state's two senators. They thought by doing this. They would ensure that he would vote for Tilden. Oh, no, no, don't bribe. The neutral guy. One hundred Republicans heard they lost their shit. And this was said this was clear corruption making him a Senator exchange for his vote. Davis resigned from the commission. Good. He really was no drone. It really was. Jerry. Some think he was actually super relief. I mean, of course, he was your badge inhabited picked the president's sweat. Sweating your balls on by time. Like, okay. And then okay. Feel like fifty percent of the country's gonna try to kill me because they are. Oh, okay. Look forward to this decision. Go ahead. Make it till. Hey, hey, hey, hey. Detail too. Let's hear it. I'm going to be the prison. Well, that was a curveball. Happens when you play with unbiased. All right. So now they have been the right call by the way for that to be in charge. So now they have to replace Davis. And the supreme court justices were given the task of finding a new independent judge fucking in. How is it that American idol still has better voting standards than this nation? And they picked Joseph Bradley as independent as he was. He was still a Republican. Okay. The Senate and the house got back together. And counted the votes again as soon as the two separate Florida's certificates were open. Everyone started objecting. The commission was then convened to hear arguments from both sides, and they went into the room. The argument went on for days. Then on February seventh commission reached a decision. Justice Bradley stood. And said. Congress could not investigate the board results in the states. This meant Florida votes would go to haze, and that meant the other states would to Tilden was one electoral vote away. But now he was the one who looked like he was going to lose. And then remember how to tell them was going to March on DC with the paramilitary force. So grant reopened to all the civil war forts just in case. He called in troops from Saint Louis who manned all the bridges into Washington. DC? He reported double four double Florida did a double Ford. She's okay intense. Those guys were like we're back baby. It doesn't fit like it used to. Shit. Now, the belief is that Democrats went to visit Justice Bradley the night before he announces decision and Bradley showed them on opinions saying he was going to support Tilden. But then after they left to Republicans center feeling highs and healing Hysen. That's what it says it easily could have changed. And the feeling and this secretary of the navy visited Bradley and convinced him not to give up the White House to the Democrats and his wife also joined in and agreed. This doesn't sound like normal protocol..

"Miss Hayes has a nice dress. Oh, well, we're not seeing that here for Tilden's wife. She's in a bikini and. Excess. Well, that's going to be controversial down here at the second inauguration to say the least. They've been parading around for ages saying, she's not only the first lady the best lady. He's. Well, I don't know what to tell you. It sounds like the second president might be a little full of shit. Which is what's covered on this mountain over here. Are we going back to the studio? What's going on? We're back to get out of here. Again. My son just say, oh, my wife balling. Nobody cares about your wife. Okay. Well, fuck you guys up there. Then tell me I come down. Here is a junior. Reporter I make my name. And then you sit up there mock in your ivory tower. I'm starting to think the thing the president's country needs is a second president you guys sitting up there thinking, you're so good. You fat cat smoke and you see guards lid off one hundred dollar bills. Well, we're down here. Living in mud, and I just got word. My son's been killed. Eating him. Congratulations. We'll take it from here. Not the words you should be saying to me. What was his name is sparky the irony? His name was the irony. That's right. That's right. Is he a wrestler? He was. Yeah. It was an. The irony where the fuck are you going? Oh, yeah. Oh, hey, buddy. Okay. So. Dave jerk me off again for those of you and traffic. Dramatic pause. Someone's gonna have to edit. All right. So. Tilden's plan is to March to DC have is on inauguration. And he said if he was captured and executed that would be the price to pay. Kind of. That's that is kind of like, it's different than what I would think politician today would say put it that way. The brakes. Dem's the brakes. But he said he would only do it. If the house would stand behind him, but the house was like, no. In January, the committee came up with the idea to create a special electoral commission to decide the results of South Carolina, Louisiana in Florida. Is this not highlighting the fact that maybe the democracy is not functioning, not great. Okay. Both sides agreed at the end of the month. The commission was made legal. It was made up of five congressman five senators and five supreme court justices seven would it be Democrats seven we'll be Republicans and one would be an independent for that spot. They picked a supreme court Justice named David Davis who was truly independent. Okay. I have no thoughts. My mind is an empty hole able to listen and way. Do I've never heard affected my life. One hundred percent neutral. Hayes did not like idea the commission. He and his team started working behind the scenes, they started reaching out to southern Democrats. As now is sort of like, I'm in. He wants he's. Yeah. Still at home like tone help at some point. They both have kicked into gear. Right. Both wanted. Right. Okay. So he he sends the teams are working behind the scenes to have secret meetings with southern Democrats to make a deal. Okay. The commission the committee. Okay. Your committee. It's a committed its mission. Commits a commission the commission the first one was coming to commit to the commission vote because it was seven or public in seven Democrats. Basically, they come down to one guy, basically, you just need one neutral guy. You don't need the seven, but they've basically set it up. So one guy is going to pick the president of the United States. Yes, neutral, man. Yeah. Yeah. Ambivalent boy. Oy..

"Also got it at Staples. So sorry, nice try gang. We got one two next. Yeah. Don't really understand how that worked. But that's basically what happened. Well, they both have certificates, and there's no way to check the authenticity. Therefore, they will be no president. The next four years. I guess. So okay. So you guys country runway better, right? So it's basically a shit show. Really? Everyone's getting mad Hayes is eating dinner with his family. He's trying to move on with his retirement, but semi shot a bullet through his window the five. Yeah. The house. Instead, it was scheduled to meet on February first eighteen seventy seven to count the electoral votes and declare winter. The president of the Senate was supposed to open the certificates and count the votes. The president of the Senate is the vice president, right? Sure. But yes in this case vice president Henry Wilson had died in eighteen seventy five and the position up and fill. So there's just well we got to bring his corpse down here. And we Boorda's hand gentlemen. There's no other rational solution. We will use the ouija philosophy. I think he can't add that one full Republic. This is gonna take a while. Did you move his hand swear to God? This is spooky. Next to light as a feather stiff as a vote come on. Spooky but fun, right? Very fun. I see weekend. Bernie's. Oh my God. One of the best documentaries of me. So so the acting president of the Senate was a Republican. So this rule of the president of the Senate counting votes is actually vague. If you can imagine something weird in our constellation. It was from the twelfth amendment. It said, quote, the president of the Senate shall in the presence of the Senate and house of representatives open all certificates and the votes show them count. It did not say who should count the votes or if you could do it behind a curtain or or. Yeah. Or if the person counting could decide who won it just said, they counted them. So he's just as simple as just bullshitting. You're just like, oh, yeah. He wins. So Rainman did it's enough. He's got it. So Republicans argue that the president should both count the votes and then make the call. Okay. And the Democrats said he could only open there's tickets and count them. But not kindergarten. No, no, no, that's Bailey's Valentine. The Democrats wanted neither candidate to win now. Because then the decision will be tossed to the house, right? And they could pick the president. Neither side's given. So the votes were counted. And then that was it. It was a stalemate. Okay. Great situation. Chrissy in action. So the situation series. It was piddly piddly stated on the floor of the house and bleed by the majority of the house that if the publicans counted the votes of the disputed state and declared them for Hayes the house would then elect Tilden and declare him president. How can they do that just because just because the house goes rogue? Yeah. Okay. Wow. This really I mean, it's funny because I feel like we're learning new lessons now about this particular situation, but it feels like a now, which is fun fun. So that would kind of create a dual presidency. Oh, I like that. I like the sound of that CBS dueling president. Oh, boy, we're vetoing it over my dead body. Oh boy. Another fun pickle. We've found ourselves into. That's right. We'll be right back. Put a shirt on. They would divide the army the navy people divided probably be another civil war. So one day a leading House Democrats to Republican that within one hundred days people would be cutting each other's throats. Stay the same. Republicans who overheard. Agreed. A democrat said in a speech that if Republicans attempted to carry out the election, and if the navy and army supported them, the people would put them down a democrat from Virginia said in a speech that if the two parties went on in on their respective courses. One would have to surrender or they must fight. And then he said, quote, our gentleman prepared for the latter alternative and all the Republicans in the house yelled. Yes for an actual fight. No for a war. Because to me, I like the idea that you take these people out and have them fight each other especially in this day and age when they're senior citizens. Stuff fund, slow MO fight. God I would love to see Lindsey Graham get punched in the face..

"Tell them at one Oregon so looking for another way to get it done. Right. Okay. Tells them one organ by about a thousand votes, which is worth three electoral votes. Okay. If Tilden could get in he'd be president. So. In oregon. What are the electors was a postmaster on a constitution says a guy can't be federal employees and elector at the same time? So just getting so a couple of days before the election. He resigned as postmaster. Okay. Then he assumed once as one that he gets to postmaster, right? So the Democrats found out and said, the governor should get rid of that guy and a point the guy with the next highest number of elector votes. So that guy happened to be a democrat. Okay. So a guy named Colonel William pelton who was a backroom little political operative and also Tilden's nephew. Okay. Boy. Started bribing Oregon officials to make sure the democrat was named that elector and the governor did exactly that postmaster out democrat in the Democrats now had their one electoral vote. The Republicans were now yelling about fraud and Oregon on what grounds of the Democrats that up fraud the three southern states. Okay. Then the Louisiana board convened. I November seventeenth Tilden's leave with seven thousand look pretty solid seven thousand sure as I said before Louisiana board of elections had previously overturned elections. Seven clerks on the board had been or were currently under indictment. Okay. Well, that doesn't bother us at all. Does it? Both parties are yelling fraud as the board worked. The board invalidated fifteen thousand votes. Oh shit thirteen thousand of which for Tilden over Purtill. Wtn's Hayes was now the winner of Louisiana. The idea that this guy doesn't want to be president is dynamite. Though that he's like don't help stop. How big? Well, we're getting closer, sir. Mr President if I may be so ambitious can I just show you yellow dog? So you'll know, sir. I think yellow does going to have a beautiful place in the White House. Once we get you in there. We're doing everything we can we know this is your train. I wanted you down. I want to die. I swear to God, I'll do everything.

"You can't. Quote with your your stakes. Sure for Hayes, he's elected, hold your states. Okay. So the three election boards on all three states were. So we're also controlled by Republicans. The board members were also insanely corrupt in Louisiana. They had actually overturned elections in the past before this for this election, the board had purged eight thousand Democrats from voter rolls. Then they made an offer to Democrats for one million the Louisiana board certify the vote had gone to Democrats. Holy shit. I mean, it is that is very I think at least now are briberies a little nuance. I'm thinking of a number for you to be president. Okay. It's a big. What's going on right now? I'm thinking of a number. Okay. And then if you wanna match that number get to be president. So it works. What's the number? I was hoping you'd guess. Every time. I do. My brother comes in here and messes up with numbers. Okay. That's fair. Your brother say that? That means does he ever used iota? It's no it's part of his platform. He's running for president of the mud hill a million dollars. But they get to be president. Really? Baby. To do what give me a million? I don't have it on me. They didn't do it. Historically, accurate. Not funny but historically accurate. The DNC rejected the offer. Okay. Similar reports of corruption on both sides reported in Florida and South Carolina with all this the national Republican chairman declared that Hayes had won the state so much now president, okay? Just just frustrating to have elections that are based on hearsay, and that's like good enough. And I'm talking about that time, not obviously. But Democrats pushed for till the to take action the National Democratic Party chair drafted a statement for Tilden. That would ask the people to be vigilant and report any fraud. Like if people are putting on different outfits to vote again. Yeah. Were you just here before is a Parisian waiter? I'm a hunter. I don't know what you're talking about. Till they would not release the statement another democrat wanted tell the to meet with Hayes and ask for a bipartisan group of people that go down south and oversee the count Tilden refused. Democrats across the country were getting irritated. The Tilden was doing nothing. Hayes also seemed very calm. He does Tilden respecting the process is that whereas heads that sort of. Yeah. That's a weird angle. It'll change. Hayes also seemed calm he told her publicans to be satisfied that the quote, people are too patriotic to intelligent to self poised allow anything perilous to be done that may disturb or destroy our peculiar form of government. Fuck in mind. Oh my God. Imagine Democrats were tilled it at one. And we're now believing they were being robbed of what they thought was victory now all over the country. They're everyone's getting riled up so weird. Rumors started the Democrats are going to March on Washington DC and forcibly installed. Tilvin install him. Like, he's windows. Yeah. Okay. It's exactly okay. He's downloaded right now. He'll be he's suffering. Everyone was focused on the three states. Republican observers were sent to encourage the governor's to throw out enough votes to make haze the winner and Hayes doesn't even want it. He's like don't do that. That's to run we're going to get you where you need to go, man. Your dream doesn't die here in this mansion with your dog. That's got a weird bucks on its throat. Oh, boy, they did this mostly by bribing people. She's Tilden had a seven thousand vote lead in Louisiana and Florida he had only a ninety one vote lead members of the electoral college will be meeting across the country. In their states on December six there was less than a month to get this all worked out. It is shocking. That Florida's margin is always a like a few hundred. With how much they're reproducing in that state. It's a lot Democrats are now concern Hayes might win the states because Republican control looked for another way to get Tilden in because of that. Okay..

"So three states too close to call Florida, Louisiana and South Carolina altogether, twenty electoral votes, K till what's that he's at one sixties as one sixty six to eighty four Tilden is one eighty four. Tell them had won the popular vote by two hundred and fifty thousand that don't matter. So democrats. Democrats use that as a way to declare him. The winner won the popular vote when will that come back to bite us? Republicans sprung into action and Clinton Democrats used intimidation fraud to win those three states Tilden just had to win one more of those three states to become president and Hayes was sure it was over quote. I am of the opinion. The Democrats have carried the country in elected till to everyone focused on the three states in Florida the day after the election a train carrying ballots had derailed boy. So it's sort of the same thing. Exactly. Yeah. No different. Yeah. The Republican governor said the klu Klux Klan, had sabotage the train to help the Democrats. Okay. When the count began both sides immediately claimed fraud Jesus God. Fucked. Other powerful Republicans were not thinking the same way as as the three states in question were still under federal control, this meant that governors were publican Daniels sickle who's from episode. Whatever. Sent to telegram to the governors of the three states quote with your states with these singing or you're just the regular the notes radio. Telegraph, okay. For my money. Right. As election day grew close, everyone thought tilled them was going to win including Hayes election day was probably so excited. Yeah. He was just like, yeah. This is it. Hello. Yeah. Election day was Tuesday to remember seventh. Someone who visited everybody post. I voted stickers on their social media that day because that's important to do. Yeah. Yeah. Or put it on your dog. Someone who visited Hayes that day said he was indifferent about winning or losing. It almost kind that is almost the right attitude for someone who's going to be president though, somebody who's just sort of like. It's a thing. If I get in there. I'll try as opposed to the person is like I have everything planned out once I get in there, sir. Thank you. Lord. Thank you say. In New York Tilden greeted his supporters who treated him as if he was already the new president word came the Tilden one New York, New jersey, Indiana in Connecticut, everyone who went to sleep thought it was over Tilden had won. But it would take days to know the outcome that did not stop the press from going to work. Democratic papers. Like, the Chicago Tribune reported Tilden had won because of Republican greed plunder the New York Times declared as the winner. So all the papers just depending on which just kind of party. They like they're just saying one again, I mean, just so vastly different. When the vote totals finally came in Hayes at one eighteen states and one hundred and sixty six electoral votes Tilden in one seventeen states in one hundred eighty four electoral votes, we go president Tilden rings a bell. He needed a hundred and eighty five. Okay. So we there. Oh, yeah. One hundred eighty four. All right. So what do we do? Then we just go to. What do we do? We just go to do. I don't know find a little island make them vote. I don't know you tell me find an island Meghan boat. Yeah. Give them one vote and be like, be jerk. Let's do this. Other guy doesn't even want it. So it was their choice whether or not to allow Colorado to become a state before or after the election, right and had three electoral votes. Okay. So there's one congressional rep from Colorado the territory at the time, he's a democrat. Okay. And he convinced his fellow Democrats in the house that if they allowed Colorado into the union early the state would give three electoral votes to till them. So they did they voted him. "Comeback especially in the south because of the federal government's occupation Democrats started winning elections, especially in eighteen seventy four when they had a I guess a red red wave. Sure, a big part of this was due to grant them. So then our control of the house. Okay. First time in ages. This is also the gilded age the robber barons were getting insanely rich. Listen to this one guy would have today, what would be considered hundreds of billions of dollars. Did you imagine that? I mean, just like one dude with power one guy. I mean, surely in this day and age the government would turn on that person and not incentivize that sort of behaviour. Right. Yeah. For sure. Yeah. Queens. Come. I poor people get over it just jam stuff in boxes with inflated. Plastic already quit your bitching. We're gonna make the warehouse out of the dead. No questions here, sir. So there monopolizing industry cities are increasing in population. Because that's where the jobs are this led to corruption party bosses running cities party buses party bosses. Oh tea party buses ran city. I mean if they did. Oh, yeah. Dachary machine a stripper pole and a Strobe light. What more do you need from your government? Election officials politicians would be bought off. So the atmosphere in the US is tense with southern racial issues the corruption. Industrialization, Republicans ran on their biggest thing was the bloody shirt. You said the bloody shirt, bloody shirt. Sure, bloody shirt. That's an Englishman says when he can't find his dress shirt. Yeah. But this is different much. The bloody shirt was an incident that they endlessly talked about the story was the Republican congressman Benjamin Butler of Massachusetts held up a bloody stained shirt while giving a speech on the house floor. This is just going to be so much bullshit. So. Yeah. So the shirt had belonged to a carpet Bagger who've been badly beaten by the klu Klux Klan. Also, this never happened. Budge ler Butler gave the speech, but there was no blood stained shirt that he was holding. But still this led to the creation of the red shirts in the south who had intimidate Republican blacks from voting they name themselves to mock, the bloody shirt that Butler had held that never existed. It's kind of a think piece though, isn't it aren't people are gonna think your Representative of that? 'cause they're I guess they're mocking it by what you just have like a sarcastic tone when you're out in the street. I don't know work. We're bloody shirts. Imagine. I think we played a lot of people the wrong way today guys. So really do. So the Republicans kept doing bloody shirt speeches. Even though it never existed as a way to pay. The Democrats is treasonous boy, so Republicans and asleep. Brought up the bloody shirt over and over to stir up voters. Sure, hey, surrogates also burly attacks Tilden calling him everything from a bribe to the've to drunken Sieff lick. To be fair. What else are you going to do if you're Flitwick your nose off, you just gotta booze it up? That's right. That's why you need party buses in congress.
