"Up so you end up with high rises and if you go to a European cities or to Vancouver you'll see grocery stores and restaurants and other amenities on the ground floor and then people living above it. You're beginning to see that more in America and that is another step toward this future and another thing that we're seeing as a trend is cities are actually taking some streets and making it where you can actually take a vehicle on there you can. It's kind of. They're giving it back to the pedestrian to the citizens and you can take my mobility by schools. Walking and only buses can go through but no like Uber lift and no personal vehicles as well and that's happening like with market street in San Francisco. We're seeing that in Madrid. We're seeing throughout Europe as well where they're taking back into their making it more of a community where people feel safe one to use micro mobility services like that but also to be able to get some that congestion off the road and there are a couple of places where. I do feel like our government is starting to do the right thing. So let's get with give just a small hand To the Department of Transportation who wrote today about their smart city challenge It's their way of encouraging cities to show what's possible when they use technology to connect transportation Assets into an interactive data fueled network. The challenge is going to award up to forty million dollars in federal funding to medium sized cities that are selected through this competition. That's actually pretty cool. You're also seeing Private companies helping with that as well. So Ford actually created a division called the Ford One city one challenge. Were there also selecting cities that have a high potential like Mexico City or Columbus Ohio for example and giving them one hundred thousand dollars to create that infrastructure and work with them as well on the ground because they understand that in order for them to be able to create these mobility services and for them to be adopted and utilized they have to have them through structure so if they have to pay for themselves and they have to be part of that discussion? So be it an. It's become this really interesting thing that like cities like Miami Dade or Mexico City for example participated in and have seen a lot of Growth you guys would be excited about their Build America Transportation Investment Center. They planned to have a single point of contact and coordination for all states municipalities and transportation project sponsors that are looking to use the federal expertise and apply for federal credit programs. Yeah that's where when a spoke of earlier about the tiffy program that the federal government has in their build America Bureau. Tiffy is Dan for transportation infrastructure financing. Act that's where the federal government will loan Upwards of billions and billions and billions of dollars for Very large scale transportation projects throughout the country. And that's a part of the build America Bureau and the government. The federal government is a partner. It sounds like we've got a long way to go and some of the way we're going to go is up. That'll be interesting. So I'm going to break out my roller skates and below this popsicle stand. Thank you really silo. Melika Japan gearing and of course at Larssen. Join US again on politics. "D. I really WANNA get into this shit. Do you really WanNa get into this. See Okay so devil's advocate cricket. Okay I gotTa do it goes felt that way but then when the mean started I thought about something I'm like okay. If there was a show that was synonymous with a black character. They decided to Redo it. They made white black people have fit about it. They have a fit out. There was a show that will feels a cartoon movie like that and it was a black character right and they're fast four. They GonNa Redo it but now it's a white character we we will not be quiet about true. Abbasiya ticket got everything from US anyway. So why can't we not be pissed off. Take some of our main characters is just like black people had an uproar when they made that guy's of Egypt movie that tanked because you we'll have to have all white people in the guys of Egypt in Egypt really everybody which is Pale complexion pays sale. I don't like when they change the characters either. I don't trip about it when they change if they're gonNA change a character from whites blacks okay fine. If it's a sits in coolest fits my thing is it seems like his purposely done to start an uproar by these major companies Disney whoever like they purposely doing that way to start an uproar but it's like Disney came out with a whole different movie that had actual a new character that was black instead to give somebody to focus on the set of China remake a white character back into a black haired. You just have a new mermaid rice tail causing tiff like just just give us some totally different would a black character as Lee yeah us if you visit Tiffy when he's in the same family still doesn't but that to me that will be a better fit. I mean machine. They had over wind transacts. Four have Michael be join us as humidors all right. Yeah was uproar about the not to be black rice so none of the Surpri Cape Maher is going to be his sister like adoptive. None of it made none of it is shot to me when people get in a pennies about it you know a- advocate in it's funny. This is the news right now in like maybe like a week before it was it was like the the hot button out the hot topic of the light pretty much day when they announced Melissa McCarthy as Ursula for the the Little Mermaid thing yet they announced that First Melissa McCarthy is going to be Ursula in black people. I mean for that day. They were like Earth Lewis Black. How does she have you Melissa McCarthy and our defense if you take on if you take one of the only black characters out of the movie and you're not knowing that the make changes taking my dance and I had no black people in in the Mermaid <unk> right and then we got you here you go the May we'll be okay?.

He did win Zombie Zombie movie sure for sure all right congratulations to this. What do I do that for you? I know as a New New York Times contributor on your resume contributor to the New York not contributor and not the tea is already there. How's your twitter bio already? Well Real Garin. I don't want to be associated with that failing industry. We're all I want to be one of the enemy of the people you know. It's a little weird times that all that man does is tweet out lies to his and this fanbase believe it. I know I'm just stating what women say for three years I it's it's unbelievable that he's still doing it. The New York Times Dude it is done with it. He hasn't stopped so that part's plachy arriving but it's unbelievable that as as a society we are now functioning in that mode that that's a okay. I can't believe you didn't hear about the fourth of July thing but I did. I did watch Rachel Maddow and she was talking about the <hes> Oh what was the o the Census Question Decision Yeah and trump's tweet about that and <hes> I don't since only because we've gone down this road a little bit just the fact that he tweeted that it doesn't matter whether the census question ends up on the thing. I think that the people will be afraid. We'll be afraid they're not going to know they will they. They won that round. Yeah it doesn't it doesn't matter yeah weird to me that we're talking so much about tweets and oh that's a good point down to <music>. I heard a song of the drive in today met. The remember made me think of you but I don't think this is one of those that was on your movie theater playlist. The pickup man was that on on a pick up in my. That's so tiffy in general I think he was sort of like the poor man's Toby Keith for a while but his songs are great but at the same time they're like you can pick them apart and just go had junk rock from side rather than the sun is junk but at the same time comes on and go. "You can sleep as much she won. The kids are taken care of if you have children, because they have plenty of activities of the kids to do and just kind of that, the kids get on with it and kinda relaxing doing your thing. And that's when I get out of. I don't want to be on these vacations where driving everywhere in keeping everyone organize all the Sime unite. Yeah. That's kind of a pain. Yeah. So you also posted a link to something called air dots. What does this, so eat on, basically a Chinese version of the concept of airports? They kind of lies and reason I came across this, my brother picked up a set and he said, you know what? These should try these and I recently had sold my airports before the battery side on them. They were. No. I don't use them that much. So the batches online was still pretty good people have used their apple tiffy since I've lost fund the battery's dying. So I sold my wanna have to set with good battery and was intending. When I come out to next ach. Six seven weeks time owes tends. Pick up a pair of their Paul twos. But I don't think I'm going to now because I have these instead so they work very similarly to the airports in almond. A little less well-built apple. But a little challenging case with magnetic connections in their different style than the pulse. They do have in changeable rubber tips on the ABC's, which is nice is that means they fit much more nicely in your ear and pulled stew. And they work broadly the same way in when you take them out the case, they turn themselves on connect your iphone, and you can then be press press a button moment to start stop audio, then that Bundu Siri, and that's pretty much it. So they're not the nowhere near as good as the airports in terms of the being apps. Switch to different apple vices and kind of having funky touch. Gestures or anything like that on them. But that they only cost me twenty five pounds though, that thirty minutes whereas April five, six times, out they because they have a rubber rubber fits into your ear. They actually sound pretty good. They probably Sam better than the apples. Certainly have a lot more base, the, the apples, do for music. They are cheap. So if you turn the volume up to maximum, you'll hear a little bit of. Break-up distortion, let you again, you really overdriving speaker the kind of everything, you know, you'll know this from your father's, you know, when things coach kinda get bit, muddy just because the drivers in the in the speaker old all the whatever just keep up with sound because it's so loud. They get a little bit like that. So it's not bad. And if you light loud, sound than you can learn to live with it, but it certainly not as detailed as crisp as maybe the airports are high volume, but the difference differences, you cannot cheat don't need the high volume because you've got a rubber seal in your ear, so you get much less me outside coming. Bluetooth is always compromised. Anyway, is it for audio, so you know what these are probably eighty five ninety percent of the sound of the airports..

"It's funny. It's dark it's about life. And how like I said before just none of us make it out of this thing unscathed, and it's really about examining failure, but not necessarily approaching failure. And looking at it as a negative but learning how to alcohol is failure. And understanding what failure means that we all need to experience it in this life. Whether that's on TV, whether that's on the stage, whether whatever medium our space, we all work in its essential. So that we can grow and learn become better versions of ourselves and figure out how to love each other and ourselves better. So that's really what this series is about. So it was a lip synching scandal, right reminiscing. And so many we've seen before I was I was disgraced I was humiliated. I was embarrassed. And instead of sort of fighting my way back at the time, I I hid Riley hid and sort of ran away. And I love the care. I've seen three episodes already getting ready for this tonight. Henry the bartender, Scott Speiser. He's one of the leads on the tick on Amazon. Now, he's such a gifted actor an amazing human as are the entire cast. And we're just so fortunate I actually cast I'm not bragging, but I we couldn't afford to see. So I actually cast the entire series myself. You're the executive producer. I am. But I never I never realized how important that. It. It's so important that it's symbiotic between the talent in the room, the humility, the graciousness, and then also just like, I know it's kind of cheesy, but just being a good hearted person with a quality and sincere work ethic. And that's what got us through this because it was a sack production, but it was sag deferred. So no one got paid. And I haven't made any money from it yet. So everybody will get paid. Once I make some money and everyone was so gracious. Well, I love the the ready. The guy non bright running around. Yes. Yeah. Gavin your boss and tell Hernandez close game. He's an EMMY award winner in one of my dearest friends for the last ten plus years. He's such a a theater guy, a slam poet Princeton grad he worked in the Clinton administration for years as a as a speech writer. He's just such a talent and gifted artist and and humble human being and everyone from Hillary Barra for two she's twenty two. Yes. Yes. And she's so great onscreen and off and just in servile. Oh are amazing writer and co creator Tracy may who has stood by me through the trenches. And there have been many and just just exceptional. Just just a lot of talent. And a lot of humility like I said before I love Henry's, get rich quick schemes and everybody. Tasers for teachers right with. With. The kids that'll keep the little that'll keep little won't it. We've got a dream, and that's Riley's stopped doing she stopped dreaming. She's gained a lot of weight. She's done on our locked. She is going for the wrong guy. Instead of the guy who's amazing and loves to pieces and sea-surface who she as she wants to go for the guy that has a girlfriend and can't get it together. And isn't quite so bright. No offense to Romy. But it's really about her finding herself and finding your way back to tiffy. She's supposed to be in who she used to be who she really is. And and it's only because of her friends and the love in her life that we're able to take that journey with her and these really dynamic characters.

"All right. We're back one more segment with our man James tiffy, where he joins us from time to time is one of our more popular guests we love talking to this guy about all of the bells and whistles with AT and T rethink possible show. The Samsung ten is out. So what's the difference between my nine in this ten if you will James? Samsung every year continues to improve upon their devices. One of the biggest things that I that apple introduced with the iphone ten last year with the edge to edge screen one. The detractors fans of the apple devices as well same thing with the large notch that apple places the top their screen housing. The front facing camera the infrared sensor and their speaker. So Samsung going against that trend. Introduce a hole punch style camera on the front so you get more true screen coverage on the front display of advice. They've also increased the the screen side on the LED screen, which is an organic LED, which nice bright Chris screen. The S ten has increased up to six point one inch and the S ten plus actually both of massive six point four inch screen. So you're getting all those videos, all that content that you're streaming on your device in the largest screen type possible without having any type of instrument. Blocking that front screen. They've also gone ahead and introduce for their starting store size under vices one hundred and twenty eight gigabytes twice as much as the introductory apple devices as well as at nine, and here's the crazy thing. Yeah. We keep talking about how these devices replacing our other items and gadgets in our life. Samsung actually placed three cameras on the back of that. So you have to twelve megapixel cameras watching what apple is putting the MAC all to its third sixteen megapixel camera on there. So those combining create a high definition rendering image and give you honestly be best. Most Keller true image you defining smartphone today. You know, what a lot of people don't understand because you know, they'll say by just got the seven now, it's the eight now it's tonight, but this technology is changing chauffeur fast. And what they have these incredible people these blueprints. I mean, it would be cheating the consumer. If you didn't take that leap of faith, and in many cases with all of the great promotions. That you have an AT and T the savings in the long run is big, especially when it comes to using your phone little things like this screen that you mentioned can go a long way. So it's just a people need to understand that this technology is changing truly every day, not just in our hands. But because of the brilliant people that are behind these brands, right? James, absolutely. I mean much much like automobiles, you know, the common knock is your you'll lose value in your car as soon as you per technology is the same way you're always coming up with something bigger, something better. And these companies have our future proofing their devices and looking what is coming in the future. One of the things with the Samsung announcing for the ten ESPN, plus and ESPN e there's also a device called the Samsung full coming out. But actually features two screens on it. There's an outward facing screening inward facing screen. So your phone can convert from a regular smartphone tablet size display. So Simpson looking at these this technology and how they can implement implemented into a consumer build and one of the biggest things is looking at the cost of it. A lot of this technology may have existed three four five years ago. But it wasn't cost effective for the consumer. And that's as I said previously with complementing your lifestyle. It also needs to complement your financial lifestyles. Well, and until this technology is priced effectively. You could go into a consumer of these companies aren't going to introduce it to the market because then sit there stagnant and much like augmented reality and virtual reality in the past fantastic technology, maybe introduced a little quicker than it needed to be because the price didn't match the consumer demand for it. I mean, do you really? Lives the gift that you give the consumer not just because of what I do in very fortunate to be able to plug in with all the social media that I'm able to with my YouTube channel, Facebook and Twitter and keep my audience up-to-date do good things to promote the community. But you realize there's some students somewhere with a mother or father doesn't have the answer of the smartphone will give it to them as they're trying to get their homework done. Someone trying to come up with a recipe to make a late night dinner. Somebody wants to know what? The penguins score is somebody gets headlines of the day because they've been trapped behind a desk all day doing their job trying to make ends meet. I mean, maybe a place where they can find a good deal on a new car where maybe some chemical work that needs done on that car where some utility Bill that they're wondering is at the rate that I should be paying or how do I prepare this or do this or fix that by going to YouTube? I mean, it's amazing to think what you can do with that AT and T phone, and we're talking Samsung but iphones apple I mean, it really is a lifesaver, but it's also a time saver and the. More time you save the more life you can have. So it really is a win win James. Well, yeah. I mean, how many how many of us years ago had teachers and professors telling us that you know, figured out and your head because you're never going to have a calculator and your pocket all the time. It's definitely been proven wrong. But yeah, you hit the nail on the head. There would Wikipedia with informational sources with clinical diagnosis. I mean, look at the technology. They're using the medical field now to assist doctors, or physicians and nurses in correctly diagnosing patients illnesses. I mean, this technology expands so much outside of where we are with our smartphones in our pockets, but it also includes the new network the five G technology. That's coming the first net technology, which gives our first responders. Priority access to the data networks, so they're not going through found lights all all these advances in technologies in the devices in the smartphone is also leading into advancements in the actual network backbone and the weight of that background is implemented across the world. So I mean, as we get more connected, and we have a greater access to that information across the country in the world. It just it helps everybody around us show. I guess to to wrap up our conversation tonight. And you'll be back as we get ready for the the fall product and moving in once again of holidays, but when you think about life without is kind of sad because you know, I know you have to do everything in moderation. And especially if you're the parent it's up to you to teach your children to get out and take a walk or to ride their bike or spend time in the sunshine. I mean, those are things that you must do that. This phone cannot do for you. But do you understand for people that are older living alone? Like me, they're never really alone because of that phone. It becomes a member of the family. It gives them a chance to to plug into the rest of the world to send a quick message. As opposed to a huge phone Bill by calling them to interact with your grandchildren. We've talked about this before. Or a classmate. Did they haven't talked to a number of years? It really keeps people wanting to move forward. And it gives them the will to live because of that great gift that is communication, even if they are living alone and all their loved ones have moved away or their significant other has passed away. So everybody thinks about young cool, hip technology. But this is technology that embraces every generation from all walks of life, James. Yeah. And I mean apple has probably done the best job running that kind connectivity into their devices with FaceTime. I mean, you have grandparents living across the country or across the world from their grandchildren. Who may not have the financial means or being strong enough help to make that travel to either grandchildren, and they can pick up the phone or an ipad and open up FaceTime and have a conversation face to face fee that brand new child who's just been born you have active duty, active duty and military. Reserve members who were across the world who haven't seen their loved ones in months and making you jump on WI fi signal and have that same communication, so. Yeah, absolutely ties into that feeling a connection between families.

Exploring the impact of the US shutdown

"The US government shutdown is dominating news in America. In terms of the political fight between Democrats and Republicans but for North America correspondent Khanna Duffy. The story has become one lived at home as well as work. He's what is one of the workers, and he fouled this reflection on what is shutdowns like for the people. Most affected truly thrilled every American very merry Christmas during the Christmas season, we rejoice in God's many blessings among US president Donald Trump's many promises was vowed to restore Christmas which he claimed was under threat from political correctness. Four days prior to Christmas, though, the president and then Republican controlled house and Senate shut down the government because the lightest budget Bill did not include five billion dollars for his signature promise, the border wall. He's christmas. Message had an extra edge while we're fighting over funding. We're. Also building. And it's my hope to have this done completed all five hundred to five hundred fifty miles to have an either renovated or brand new by election. Most of the news coverage focused on the politics with both sides blaming each other. We begin with the White House blaming Democrats for this partial government shutdown. If it has I found out this story has a postal edge about three hundred eighty thousand workers will full to stay home without pay another four hundred twenty thousand had to work without pay. My wife is in the first group the weeks leading up to the shutdown with filled with anxious group chat messages as she and her colleagues debated whether it would really happen. This time on Christmas Eve it did. And our income was effectively halved it's an expensive time of year, and it meant budgets had to be reworked in a shutdown. These no guarantee back pay will be paid. And this one could lost several weeks. We cancelled a holiday we had coming up and delayed. My wife's annual purchase of new running gear. We're in pretty good shape. And it wasn't too big a deal for us. But it's hard to imagine any strategy employer. Let alone the government being legally allowed. To treat this stuff. Like, this many others have it much tougher and many more rely on government services. The bulk of government workers are low paid some couples have both partners working for it. And as such live paycheck to paycheck and number of DC restaurants, put on free meals for the stuff at home, and like, many others. We went along to one of our locals for a free sandwich. It was a strange though, relatively painless experience. But for some families, it's a really terrible time and many were unimpressed that day when the president tweeted pull me about having to spend Christmas alone at the White House trying to strike a deal CNN's, Don, lemon summed up the feeling for some families stuck at home while the president variously described them as being both pro his wool, and then the next day Democrats, but what is true what Israel for so many American families is that hundreds of thousands of federal employees are taking. The brunt of the partial shutdown. The government nearing its seventh day now going without paychecks this holiday season, federal work is run able to speak to the media and as such voices get lost amid the political drama. I found one worker who agreed to speak to me as long as we changed her name. His Valerie, I think the biggest impact has to do with uncertainty and just not really knowing what's going to happen. Or when things are going to happen. I think everybody's really worried about when we're going to get paid. If we're going to get paid people bills. Don't stop just because the government workers are on furlough. So I think it's that uncertainty and the stress financially kind of the biggest impact in the US workers rely on their employees medical insurance to cover expenses. And Valerie wasn't sure if she could get treatment for an injury picked up on the shutdown at did wanna be able to go in and get my wrist Rayed. And it just occurred to me before. Call my doctor that oh Lord am I even going to have health insurance and be able to get this taken care of? And I was worried about it. Because I think it is something that could easily get worse if I put it off in wait longer. So just that's what I mean about the uncertainty that every everyday thing that you take for granted you actually have to double check 'em. I covered a have insurance like who you know, in finding information. How do you even know who the call the gets those answers? Luckily, Valerie's health insurance is still valid. She still worried though about the people she served through work. And what this will mean for them. It has been set back for sure for sure I mean, there are there are, you know, citizens we are here to serve the public. So there are people out there who are relying on me right now to be processing, you know, their requests in and things like that that I just it's not going to happen right now. And just knowing that when they me right now, they're getting out of office response. It is. In fact, it is impacting them direct. Really important on tiffy research as well as some government welfare programs suspended, and the shutdown is very much enforced. It's frustrating for passionate committed workers like my wife and Valerie who loved the work, they do and worry about its progress. Even cleaners aunt allowed into their offices. The first day back from holiday is usually, HUD, but many government employees will return to a backlog of work as well as an office full of dead plants and rotting food. That's the inside story of the US government shutdown North America correspondent Khanna Duffy.

"Yeah. And you know, did they just Mike Tyson? One two punch the new description from FEMA not wanting people tiffy. Oh, la. Complaisant or oh, we don't really need to leave because it weakens. But then it strengthens before it makes landfall and the problem is when it strengthens Benson ramp. You don't have time to evacuate in. You've got you've got to prepare for these things. So I just kind of like me when I'm getting ready to go to my kid's baseball game or practice, and it's raining, and I'm like I'm trying to like wait till the last minute in. And of course, it's not canceled. And we have to be there in your racing down the highway trying to make it in time. Because you've thought that he was going to be cancelled hurricane will not be cancelled to get out. You know, what's amazing to me? How we have forgotten about judge Cavanaugh going through his confirmation. They're going to attempt to vote on the committee today. Yeah. And so that's going on. But you don't hear anything mentioned about it unless you're over on MSNBC. And so all of the craziness that we had all the political theater. The Bob Woodward book. Omarosa next bombshell was stormy Daniels. Gonna put out her tell all of that night with the Donald which you won't be a book it's going to be like a pamphlet to all of that seems to go by the wayside when we have a storm like this. So I guess there is some good that has come of this. He know another story that I think is huge. It's not getting a ton of attention seven NYPD officer is being arraigned in a gambling and prostitution ring. And the allegation is that two. Detectives three sergeants two officers. Basically provided tip-offs and protection to forty people writing a major prostitution ring in queens and Brooklyn and the accused mastermind is now retired NYPD vice detective and these guys make good money, by the way said they're making good money as a detective and he's got retirement money coming in. And he's got the prostitution and gambling ring money coming in allegedly at internal affairs. Gotta tip back at twenty fifteen on that. And so here we are at twenty eighteen and you're finally being arraigned. Yeah, I hope if they are found guilty that they surrender their pensions are have their pensions taken away. It just seems terrible. But by agree. I agree. Here's the problem. It's a handful of cops, right? Tens of thousands of great law enforcement officers, and these cops are gonna smear the good work by the men and women who take care of that city that state that region, and that's what really irks make because you, and I know so many great cops. And it's couple of jackwagon. Are gonna now stain the badge. So I'm glad they're caught. I hope they get the maximum penalty. You know, what bothers me Gallach us. You're right. People in power who abused their power. We talked earlier about the leaked to tape from Google or the heads of Google held out all hands on deck meeting after Donald Trump was elected and the rain wringing their hands of other believers happened. But the chief financial officer stood up at this meeting. I watched the whole hour and ten minutes tape, and she explained how she handled this election. I this one's too much. I lean and I had a a town.
