"They actually did on the big screen. Because i felt like missing. Yeah normally i would never say that. But i think what happened at least the theater that i went to i felt like there was so much fusion between projection to screen. That you've lost a lot of the little. The little textual differences or skin were once. I watched it on four k. Like you could see all the pore structure you could see all the details to rescan it it just to me. It looked more natural. Look more realistic. Seeing it in that resolution rivals to the diffused movie screen whereas like as women. We wanna see ourselves as a polaroid with the most the most filters diffusion possible. Oh my god well. Justin thank you so much. I'm so happy being recognized for this amazing work. And there's going to be so much more to calm. And i'm i'm gonna have to call you again. "Welcome to look behind the look. The new podcast that examines iconic looks in film television music and fashion history. I'm your host. Tiffany bartok hey everybody thanks for joining me for another episode of look behind the look. Today's episode is with hair designer. Liliana maggio and what brought us. Together was actually her emmy nomination for her work on the politician but our interview date kept shifting because come to find out she had contracted cove it and so our date kept shifting so my intention was to of course put this out before the emmys aired. but now they've aired of course Because i i just couldn't get it out fast enough. We talked a couple of days before the emmy awards so just to give you a heads up. On the time line. They're liliana called in from the sex. In the city reboot And just like that. She was over at steiner studios and called in so we had a great talk and we talked about her emmy nomination. This was her second won. Her first one was for her work on pose. And we definitely talk about pose and her experiences with wig. God jerry lee mo who you know from listening to this show and she discusses many of her other projects in this episode. So please take a listen. Because we cover a lot. Cover the power in greece of judith. Light and any excuse to talk about youth. Light is welcome with me for sure West side story is another project. Of course that's extremely anticipated. And i can't wait to see it myself and i know you can't either and she talks about working on that and watching steven spielberg direct. She also talks about how it was vera for me when she worked with bureau farm miya she realized that you can have it all and i really loved listening to that realization. That's who she learned that from and she learned from surgeon or mont of course on the set that she's on right. now he's doing To sarah jessica parker on and just like that and she also talks about laying her first wig on bernadette peters. And here's a little bonus for you. You will hear from me my most embarassing moment in life which involves bernadette as well maybe not the most embarrassing but definitely top five so and i will see you next week. Thanks for listening so here. We are with liliana. You are at steiner right now. Under which is literally i can see it out my window so i can't believe it's so funny that we're not together in our. I live episode with you but everybody knows that. It's a blessing to be working at steiner. Because it's like the best like there's heartening for any new yorker who dr early a stage with parking. Yes me do you live in brooklyn. I don't i actually over the democ. I moved up to westchester northern westchester. Right so a lot of able to betty. Yes we'll because there's a new. I was pregnant during the endemic I actually got pregnant during the politician. So hoping is very significant. Very very special to me on winning or not. It's such a special show in general for me. Oh goodness yeah. So they'll be more about that. Okay so we today are here brought together. Because you're nominated for an emmy for the politician for hair design. And congratulations burst of all. You're not showing your even qualified to be in this race. That just shows how out of touch is really and it. Underlines the need for a new generation of young leaders. Forgive me aren't going to be dead in twenty years we have a family emergency trouble reminder and i have just a little bit of history repeating and second of all. There's so many products that you're involved in right now and so and you just told me that your entire family Had cova did over the past so you are a busy busy bee and so about all of the good things. I which are your nomination. And the success of the show and overcoming go and having a new baby in the middle of pandemic. what are they going to call this. Generation of pandemic babies right. I know we were so nervous. And him. Being social become a claiming he was conceived right. What a month or so before. The shutdown twenty ninety. Yeah okay okay. Proven would came about. Your mom was social healings. I know and they get them out there. I mean we. We took the baby on the parade when we first had him because i want him to get almost all the get all the antibodies and everything and now it's like twelve different ballgame totally rules and the first thing you see is mass. They're going to think that we only have this. Just having the mass come down. He's ernie giggling peekaboo peekaboo suites. So you came to the politician midway right at there had been a season and then you came to yet. Tell me the backstory of coming to the project. Because i i'm confused about how it worked time timeline wise with the pandemic and so just explain it to me so the first season will show actually no way and look chris chris their high school side of the story was in la. Chris clark who works with Ryan murphy a ton. He's done pretty much. I would say like eighty ninety percent of all the shows refine murphy Heated the first season then. Obviously they had a hollywood filming. They had another american heard stories. They have so many things going on so chris cork obviously has to pick and choose where he can go and he called me up him insuring lawrence. That's makeup or.

"To say. Leveled hollywood is you know where iran yeah were. Popular is likely to gaga have brought in like sort of like glam rock and futuristic ideas for make up glam and her makeup artist. Sarah who's amazing. I think my what i do. And what i the way i think is hollywood. I think old hollywood. I think i have you heard of a. She's kind of an influence or her name. Susan yara and she has just a thing. I used to call mixed makeup. I transformed her into merlo run. An ally people don't even know who run. It's you know. And so i really enjoy Giving a little sort of history with these looks and all sort of techniques and shapes and application techniques of the way. I when i'm creating something. I just did a model by the name of wendy. Both as a gardener how i saw that So i really enjoyed that. That's what i feel i do. That's my strength. i think and how i see women. It is the first day back summer her one summer and i know it's still summer. I know i know it's a heat wave here in new york as i'm recording this. It's not really my favorite I know i am definitely in the minority for that. So if anybody can commiserate with me on actually stressfulness of summer sort of entertaining the family and You seeing seeing family and traveling. It's a little stressful for me. But now the workaholic and me is very excited because my favorite time of year is happening it is going to be fall in five minutes. That means that we are back. And i have some super exciting guests coming. I know i always say that. But it's really true. The person that i spoke to for this comeback episode is lawrence davis the hairstylist terror guru extraordinaire. His work is featured in respect. That came out today. I saw the film. of course. please see this in the theater. Jennifer hudson is you know at the top of her game with the singing. My god it is really something to experience in the theater. At full volume. What's really extraordinary about this movie. Is the costumes hair and makeup. And you're not gonna believe your is. The replication are incredible and she looks extraordinary. Please please please please. please tell me what you think. You're gonna love it. Lawrence davis was the head of the hair department. The personal stylist for jennifer hudson. And i'd been admiring his instagram posts since he started dropping little sneak peeks of his work in respect. And you've you've seen his work for years. He's working every day on everything. Most recently it was mayor of east town and the underground railroad which you all saw and he managed to escape to speak with me. Super-quick He's working on his latest project. The mothership with halle berry so we went into the trailer and stolen moment together to talk about some of the amazing work that he did in respect and honestly this origin story for lawrence is incredible. I almost cried. a i. Just can't believe the serendipity in this world when you are aligned on the right track and living your life with purpose the rewards just arrive and the story is so inspirational. It's in the second half of the interview. And i'm dying for you guys to hear it because i've been feeling like this is a story that i personally needed to really here right now and we've had a lot of reflection going on. I'm kind of sick of it. And i really appreciated hearing you know that once you are lined with your purpose. It's unavoidable that it is going to deliver for you. I hope you feel inspired by this. Please enjoy my conversation with lawrence.

"Her for the movie. I was going to ask her about it but it was needed to to go out actually finish it. I was like one of those things. That was the last thing i wanted to do. And i just. I i feel like everybody involved in this was really gracious and It ended up being so beautiful. And i love that something. Beautiful came out of a day. That was so sort of sad and when search tells the story he's just so sad he's still carrying carrying that day around with him. But then you have this beautiful image. And it's just sort of a great back story thing. Yeah yeah obviously. I love kevin's work. And there was a million reasons why i was drawn to kevin like as a teenager Know i was related to beauty. And you know there weren't as many artists like him who were putting themselves out there. I mean bobby. Brown was and i love. Bobby spoke You know. I love her made book more so than teenage beauty. It seems like i'm not a teenager. Even though it was a teenager i was like i don't need this. I graduate. i could graduate. Thanks thanks fobus office. I was like bobby. I love that you did this for my friends. You know i can. I can do your normal book. You know But i loved you know a traffic trish a book at the same time yup But i loved you know. Love kevin for a million reasons but one of them is like i really love it. He was so in tune in like in the same world as like female artists. You know that. He was buddies with actresses that i thought were the cool girls in the world and he was really tight with like phenolic musicians and you know we know he was super close tori amos. I don't know do you know. Is he starting to be friendly. At all with britney spears. She wasn't for me. She wasn't for me but like i wonder what he would. What would have been. He made it look so people powerful in this and we all know that she. I'm positive that he wanted. I'd have to asteroid because he was on that shoot. But i would have to say that. He probably wanted her to look. Not like a target. Or you know like all right. She really looks. Classy and empower maze in achy. Looked at pictures. Look amazing so too. I think so too There's an ultimate respect and power in all of the looks for sure that was that was his signature for sure But we have probably no more time. "Tiffany bartok hi. I have a confession. I me I am the last person to watch. It's creek this was not for a lack of a nation in any way for the show. And the show's talent. I simply had misjudged the entire situation by thinking that i knew what to expect and as a hardcore fan of christopher guest films i felt like if i didn't have christopher guests i mean how great could it be ow. There's many things i'm wrong about and this is probably in my top. Five cut to my mother binge-watching it my mother who doesn't get addicted to any shows and cut to her crying. When it was over it was because of her. I reached out to lucky bromhead and asked her to come on the show. I of course no lucky work and followed her incredible account. So i knew all of the shit's creek episodes looks and anyway. They secured all the awards that they have. I then realized that though. I knew the looks and had seen so many clips and a few episodes here and there and i had seen endless amazing amazing photos of the work done on the show. I had never watched the show completely like season for season in its entirety. So jason i binged all eighty episodes and finish the night before this interview. I'd been crying all night because the last episode wrecked me completely. Lucky had anya souris. Join me and now. I will share with you our conversation. I wanted mostly to ask them how it felt to be a part of something so special such an important part of it too and if they recognized how their work has certainly contributed to the world being a better place. The best work is that which has purpose and these women are extremely special in that. I see that purpose along with unrelenting attention to detail. It's the secret to their impeccable. Artistry so here we are talking about the best show created in recent history with the most celebrated hair and makeup team. Tv land right now and while the show is over we will always have these stories from the set so i hope you enjoy them..

"I of all have to express my gratitude for you joining me today. I'm so beyond thrilled to have you both year. I- i bow down to the work that you have created and the thing that i wanted to address right off the top is that i know that there's been so much press on these looks because they are so i connect and so fantastic but i decided that i just don't care and i just wanted to talk to you like this is the first time i've anyone has ever seen them so you know. Let's just pretend they're not like the most sought after looks for every you know going out tonight. Look and let's just talk about this amazing amazing work that you've done. I have to confess that binge watched all eighty episodes since we secured this interview. That's and i literally just stopped cry. I mean like. That's why. I let my son watch the first episode. Because he was wrong with mom and i was sobbing for the first time. I don't know how long from just feeling it all at once like that and just experiencing them it rapidly. You know altogether like that instead of in bits and pieces. So i can't imagine how you guys have been feeling since the show's been over but i assume on these awards. This award tour has been helpful in sort of the letting go process right How did how did you guys begin. How did you meet and how did. How did you come onto the project. Initially you wanna go first. Sure i've known dan for a long time. I used to be the Headed makeup from td canada. So i met dan when he started there so i think he was like twenty one or twenty two. Maybe

Has it just been unexpected. You of course. Of course. yeah it's been The part about it is that is so unexpected. Like when you work behind the scenes you just don't it just doesn't cross your mind that you're working on a project this is about to do so you know. There's no is nothing that can predict what the project is gonna go so i don't think that anyone on it knew that this where we were all headed you know so that part is surprising and i think it makes you you know. Just have gratitude on a whole 'nother level right. Yes but the second project that you've been involved in. That's been like so hugh i mean. Uncut gems was my favorite movie of the year. Just one year before so you must be. You must be able to pick the project. How did you come to this project. Or how do you pick your projects. Well so an roth. The thought myself but definitely them right like as we watch the performance as we will show you know this is spectacular and the transformation on viola. And how far. She's willing to go with it In washington her bill that character even in biddings That was something. "The new podcast that examines iconic looks in film television music and fashion history. I'm your host. Tiffany bartok hello strangers. So we took a break as you can see and if i were to do a look behind the look of look behind the look i would talk about the behind. The scenes work of kelly reilly. Who takes my brain basically and gets it under control. She creates the graphics editor to episodes. And as you can tell from our content. I tend to be a runaway train that needs to make several stops. But i don't like stopping so she sort of Rains it all in and we went on pause to catch up a little and kelly created some new visuals and such and i love to get your feedback on at all so please take a look at our social and our channel and let us know what you think. You should always check out the youtube channel for the episodes by the way just so you can see the looks that we're talking about. "The new podcast that examines iconic looks in film television music and fashion history. I'm your host. Tiffany bartok hey. Everybody happy new year here. We are and it's really weird. It's already weird but you know we've been trained pretty well by now. So hopefully we're going to make the most twenty twenty one regardless of how it begins. I have been so excited to start the new year with this new episode. It's obvious why am so excited. Because guess is lisa eldridge who needs no introduction. Obviously and i know these intros are always really gushy love letters. But i'm not gonna apologize for that because all of these artists are deserving of high regard as you know. Lisa is incredible makeup artist. You've seen her work on the cover of every magazine and her celebrity clients are just too many to name but she's also known to have an extremely high and youtube channel. This youtube channel. Many aspire to recreate. And maybe they don't quite have the elegance in authority that lisa has so they don't quite succeed but lisa is the gold standard. And that's just me talking. I'm not giving side eye or anything. I'm just saying that she set the standard. And that's everything she does. She has the brain of an encyclopedia duty. History beauty culture and scientific knowledge when it comes to products her book face paint was new york times bestseller. And if you don't own it just know that your library is being judged by anybody who finds out and and and an n. Just for christmas gift just now. I received her lipsticks which are truly extraordinary. And i'm not just saying that because this glorious woman is a guest on this podcast. I'm saying it. I mean she doesn't even know why i'm saying she's no she's not here she's no i'm saying this so it's not even here for this part and i don't have to say if you're listening to this on your podcast app. Please remember that you can watch it. You can subscribe to the youtube version. Tiny url dot com slash l. b. t. l. youtube channel. And that's where you can see all the looks that we're talking about and a lot more fun things. I also have a little giveaway going on on our issues. So head to look behind the looks i g and lichen share if you feel so inclined and this conversation with lisa and i the most down to earth woman in the world who does not have to be she just is.

"The new podcast that examines iconic looks in film television music and fashion history. I'm your host. Tiffany bartok everyone. I took a break last week because we were counting the votes. And frankly i could not think about promoting a podcast while our democracy stood lying in wait but now we're on the other side and i can finally share my guest rene gardens with you if i met rene when i interviewed naomi campbell. She was her makeup artist. Of course that day was a story in itself but one thing. I will never forget of the many things i'll never forget about. That day was rene not only did only look flawless of course but i remember how gracious and full of light rene was. She came to the premiere of larger than life in illuminated the room in the same exact way and i remember being an off how someone who has had the experience in status that she had accomplished how she was so humble and kind. I know that this is a repetitive. Idea that i express and sort of beat into our heads but rene is another example of kindness winning. She leads with grace.
