"Thurman Munson home in the mayor's trophy game against the Mets but they said they will use in a just a baseball in the first three innings and they were total home runs in the first three innings it was a baseball that was a regular baseball they were using a modified baseball that they admitted was pumped up and it was a million a month early in the game and they went back to the other baseball midway through the game I don't know what the date was someone could remind body mounted incredible shot that was just an incredible bond the left center field way out there but Allen's ball that the word was it when it did hit the bus behind the bullpen the question was that it had it did it bounce right at the back wall of the bullpen abounds over what went back on a flight if the bus on the other side of the ball but that was the one long this was ever so hit I don't know what Paul if I remember right they talk about a ball that storage will hit I was not that game I'm not sure what people consider the longest home run at at Shea Stadium hello can we have a couple Allen clearly had one store Joel had one I'm not sure what they consider to be the longest home run hit at the ads ads at Shea Stadium I know AG had one that was a tremendous bombs so that landed all the way fair up top down the left field line fare that was an enormous shock to but I'm not sure which one they old rally around B. along as homeowners at.

"As it should be as its script the debate but I will remember him for what he did coming through my box my radio coming through the box in my car okay that's it how he made my mornings better any did and I'm not asking you to say will you make my mornings better fine I'm not trying to bring over to my side not every argument or every discussion means that I've got a win you over you have to believe like I do the Thurman Munson should be in the hall of fame no you don't but I'll just tell you I think you should be that's it I'm not telling you you have to think that or you're an idiot because you don't think that so for me growing up it is interesting still being in this industry being in this industry since I was eighteen I I can't not respect add admire the work that I miss did and I can't ignore the charitable work and as far as his negatives sure there were hundreds if you want to dwell on him enjoy it if it makes you happy but just don't look too hard under your rock okay because when you lift up a rock like that there's gonna be some slime underneath every time every time so it's a choice at all negative enough and having these teams in New York on the way they've played the way they've built easy to be negative here easy I'm not gonna do that with don office not not we're gonna talk about a lot of things today most of the football teams I would imagine we get into the college football a little bit but that will drag on and on and on all the way close to midnight probably and we're only at four twenty now so we got plenty of time to talk about that and then obviously we'll get down to two teams jets and giants with the off season moves they might make what they might be thinking about playoff implications for tomorrow baseball and the optimism surrounding both teams that I think is fairly valid even with that very strong National League east Bob Clavatula times.

"Summer you know funny we had the discussion about Thurman Munson once again last night the modern era committee did meet it's comprised of sixteen men and some very recognizable names guys I call a female robin Yount for example and many other former baseball players great baseball players and they meet and ten men last night had an opportunity to make the hall of fame Cooperstown coming up this summer along with the guys able voted for example Derek Jeter who get voted in this summer will be the only one in my opinion but last night to attend all the guys on the ballot guys like Dave Parker Tommy John Steve Garvey two men in particular played for the Yankees don Mattingly and Thurman Munson so we did don't talk about this with crash who ran the board on funny because me you were out and he did not think that months in and automatically would get any was right a two man did get in last night he did think former catcher Ted Simons some very good years and Saint Louis to Milwaukee had a chance to get any was right Ted Simmons get scene and so did the guide that served as the executive director of the MLB Players Association between nineteen sixty six and nineteen eighty two the great Mormon Miller so those are the two guys to get into the hall of fame last night Ted Simmons and Marvin Miller this is like the rock and roll hall of fame's like anybody can get in who the hell of her no that does it if your baseball fan you heard of those guys was a big time guy Simmons was a big time World Series catch one more familiar was the guy burn that during all those sprite years in the late seventies and early eighties he's really the guy that made the baseball union as powerful as it is today that is a very very powerful union in fact of all the sports maybe the most powerful the more the middle was a guy who really did that back in the seventies and eighties I know Pete rose no people no this is an hour is an outrage we did go yes we see the rematch of last year's AFC championship game and I don't party will routing from homes in Kansas city they did not win because it's one of them on the Superbowl I enjoyed Brady getting booed as he left the field well that was yesterday the last year doing the the big game the patriots won but yesterday yes your team has has they won the game exacted revenge that we're talking about yesterday's games no was making the point that last year the chiefs lost to New England in the AFC championship all had a chance to exact revenge open Foxboro yesterday and they did and you're right the whole plan for blowing Tom Brady gun the patriots I was funny only scored sixteen points here that they can't score came right down to the wire and they blew them like loudly is there on the field they did is that amazing the guys one what we what we sell to build what we yeah right what have you done for me lately some believe it is in the pats are still ten and three they're still the two seat inside the a FC behind Baltimore but Kansas city with their twenty three sixteen rolled when Bernie actually propel themselves to the three spot Houston fell to the four spot he was team said coach Andy Reid of the Kansas city one that big game up in Boston yesterday you guys play their tail off so you knew you just knew it was going to come come down to the end and and it did no dead so you know we gotta clean some things up with too many families we have to take care of that and make sure that we work on that we got a Denver Broncos team coming in so they'll take care get ourselves ready get back long trip here so we gotta get back and rested up like you said Bernie did come down to the very end the patriots had a fourth and short very deep inside the red zone with a chance of tight that game late Brady incomplete to Julian Edelman and you're right he did get bored after the game here is patriots quarterback Tom Brady after the loss not that we come in with a plan to get better every week and try to win each game and each game takes on a little different feel and the situations are live there for it and now it's a different team every year too so on may have certain experience doing things but this particular team as a whole hasn't been through different situations so we try to work during the course the whole season and we have three big games ago and got I've got to get back to win a football yeah well they need to they need drunken Antonio brown they really do badly both of those caught they really do that's the point in a player's on up in to help out Tom Brady but the game of the day and maybe the game of the decade was between the saints and the forty Niners in the woman's and the woman's one from the one seed inside the NFC told while core team now because the forty Niners pulled out an improbable forty eight forty six road win in the wall and getting a late field goal an unbelievable game annoyed ninety four points you wanted to all over the place San Francisco now goes all the way to the one seed inside the N. F. C. he was forty nine of quarterback Jimmy goal Rapallo into this unbelievable late comeback win condolence against the saints we went different ways every week I feel like I said the same thing every week you guys but it's just that's what a good football team does he find a way to win tough games like this whatever may be having our guys bill for anything on handling the environment everything it was it was very loud out there you know but I thought we do both that much of that you have with the top two seeds they have so you're still Baltimore wonder women to win the NFC it's now San Francisco one Green Bay to one how bout of program director Dave liberals he's Pittsburgh Steelers down to the fourth string quarterback and they want to get in to improve to eight and five same record as the Tennessee Titans but if the season ended today the Steelers would make the playoffs as the sixth seed inside the a FC one eight hundred eight four eight W. A. B. C..

"Very interesting discussion that we're having right now on obviously agree Martinez gets in there as well. But we're talking about bonds cleanse now making it can be our is the number. We'll get to Craig and Patrick in second. But but Ed piece chomping at the bit here. Go ahead polish chomping teeth. Always just. Red light second. Yuki your Mike. You're just like your. You're tapping your feet. Go ahead. What do you want to say? I just want to propose an idea to you guys. What if members in the hall of fame players that are elected can vote with the writers? So the writers Ardy elected these guys. So the writers are responsible for these veterans committee is. But with the the first ballot boat. I I like this see I like where you're going because what I would like to see a world where the riders are removed and the active living hall of fame members vote for the next class. What's wrong with that? If William as says Barry Bonds is a hall of Famer how is he not a hall of fame? That's pretty credible. Right. No. But not you guys you guys think that and I mean, honestly, there's so many guys that have come out and said that they would never do it. Either. I know. What if he? If he's not a hall of Famer in the eyes of the hall of famers in our should we even push that issue anymore unit is saying we should take their word for it. That's what I feel. I feel like there's a lot more credibility doubt. No doubt. Here's that already on that pedestal then a guy who who got pissed off at a certain player in the locker room. He's not gonna vote for him ever guys who are voted in where the jacket have the bus. I will say this when it comes to the riders. I'm on the. I'm I think minority on this with you guys, obviously. But most of the guys are being talked about as far as voters based on a couple of guys a couple writers. I think too. I think the majority of them do their absolute due diligence. They they do the necessary research, they think long and hard about it that don't have a bias. I think there's a majority of the writers. I think the couple that are are screwing this all up is causing us to have this discussion just a couple. But those couple could end up being, you know, get a couple of guys here, and they're convinced a couple of guys here, and there I just think that for the most part we're looking at really got a lot of individuals guys and girls that have. They do what they're supposed to do. And they do it right now. It's great. That's a good point. Actually, there there is a handful, but their influence is so massive I think they could sway the vote one way or another. I really do. I do like the writers in the system. I do like that. They watch baseball twenty four seven. They know what they're talking about. They get it. They get it. They love the game to you have to love the game to write about baseball. That's one. Yeah. That's. For the game. I mean, look what guys are making millions and millions of dollars those guys and girls are getting paid everybody. Yeah. But everybody. To me. I think I understand that. But everybody loves the game of baseball. If you're involved, you're watching everyone you'd be surprised saying if he surprised saying you can't just say that the writers are the only ones that love the game. So I didn't say that not saying that you did. I've just the thought that oh the writers. They love the game that covered yet everybody who watches baseball loves baseball. If if there's a different if you're into it. No matter what you are a writer a fan of your into it. You love baseball. Yeah. The whole thing was just throwing in that idea because it would offset those few that are in the minority that are impacting the majority danger beggar. Thirty. We'll talk to more. We'll talk danger about this. This is interesting conversation. We're all kind on different sides of things. The episode with franey because the writers I'm on an island as I always am anyway, kmby number love to get your thoughts. Go to Craig in Santa Rosa, Craig you're arcane beer. Thanks for taking my call. Thanks for making that what's on your mind. The hall of fame. No, I have not I have not. Newseum it celebrates the game. I went years ago in my brothers. I saw shoeless Joe Jackson shoot. I saw homerun back from eighty seven. It is a celebration of the game. All of this stuff. Blow. Celebration of the game to that in. Everybody's got their perspective on Keith Olbermann wrote an interesting tweet today. Listen to that. Trust me. I don't know how you'd pull this off in the building itself. However. Three-tiered hall. Mortals, like Ruth and Ted Williams Willie Mays and Hank Aaron the general population damn near everybody else. And then the notable shorten Thurman Munson ROY halladay the controversial guys like bonds and Clemens. Three wings three wings and hall of fame. Well. Even if it's vertical. Even if you go all the way upstairs to see, you know, the immortal. Second the general population and the bottom tier even if it's in a darkened room the notion of having guy play Thurman Munson halladay, I'm not a big fan of Edgar Martinez. Not having a glove is locked up a seventy percent of the game. She played, but the and the closers, and and the guys who he rose and Barry Bonds, I don't think they should be in. But if you're going to celebrate this game. Got the most the most homerun ship it to not have them there. And they're all there by the notion of cheering it up the notion. Giving the immortal hairdo giving the quote unquote, general population of guys with a plaque there do and then having an area where the guy should made this game to game bonds bonds and woes are going to be taught about in baseball long after all of us are gone. It's just a way of things. But I thought it was an intriguing notion. Call Craig appreciates chiming in. Interesting. Let's go to Patrick Kane. Beer, patrick. You're on. Hey, what's going on? Kevin you Lou. Good, man. What's on your mind? There you go. I should've followed. You're on that same point where the hall of fame is a museum. And if it's a museum you have to capture all January of the entire baseball four hundred and fifty years, and we all know that in the nine thousand nine thousands of things that are going up. But prior to that other things have gone down as well. So Bob laser being there Roger climates being there. You don't have to put an asterisk for them right now. The major league baseball writers who vote for the hall of fame are changing history of baseball layer change in the history of baseball. That's what we're talking about cut you off. But that's what we're talking about. Those those select few who realize how much power they have realized how much influence. Just kind of do their own thing all bias in the motion into it. That's where I have a problem. Yeah. Changing the history of baseball. And that's what they shouldn't be doing. I mean, the history of baseball bonds was there and. I don't know about you, drew, and I'm sure I could say the same thing, and we're gonna miss your for anyone you go while you're in Philly now, but I'm never seen a person intentionally walked with the bags loaded. Thank you for calling Patrick. You're absolutely right. Thank you for coming. Patrick. Appreciate that. Franson we talk about that that that moment were show. Walter walked bonds. What happened after that play? What happened after that line out? Maine. Yes, right, right. Made her line out. I got something for you guys about that. I thought about this over the weekend kind of switching gears a football. When are we going to get to the point where Tom Brady, just like walks in with a minute, three laughing? You just take your chances on offense because he's almost automatic within two minutes think about this. So in the fourth quarter when he's gone. Okay. Where where we at right now. What are we talking about football? I know, but this is connecting the dots here. Just listen to me. I promise it's good. It's good. Barry Bonds gets walked intentionally. Okay. When are we going to let it Tom Brady score intentionally think about it? Within the last two minutes. So that way you could take your chances on offense at the minute time. Yeah. Time. It's almost like Barry Bonds eating intentionally walked I feel like Tom Brady is in that category now. And that's what you do with the goat's. There's connecting FBI patriots. We're going to get into the patriots. I didn't see it. I'll text it to you know, we'll get into the patriots. But I I kind of follow what you're saying F B that he's on this immortal level for sure Brady is patriots are infuriating shivers support though. Yeah. Yeah. Completely different. What is the intentional walking every other sport? There really isn't one is there. Well, that's what I was trying to compare it to guys. There's none no in football. I said trying and instead I was gonna do it was going down the path may lead to a brick wall. But he's going down. Yeah. All right committed to it. Let's. You know, what I just that's why we liked perseverence friend effort, just go. You don't care you'll run into the wall. You'll get back up and go the other way can CASA. But. Had to away for a little bit. House truly fair. For having to listen. Kaby number. We'll continue with the hall of fame discussion, then we'll switch gears at eight forty five talk NFL angel Bagger leads up on that one. I tell you this in half an hour. "And now, it's. L A, and I got the five bucks which way. This will good one. How 'bout Reggie Jackson versus Thurman? All right. This is crazy. And you know, they don't wanna championships in nineteen seventy seven seventy eight Yankees get swept by the reds in nineteen seventy six and then free agency comes in George needs to go out and get as big mash, right, obviously, Reggie was a huge personality. Always the quote in spy little was part sport magazine. He says this is nine hundred seventy seven this team. This is this is a quote this team it all flows from me on the straw that stirs the drink this gets really bad. Maybe I should say me and Munson, but he could always stirred bed. Who says that you say, I stirred the drank very thin. To denigrate Thurman Munson was the ultimate teammate who was revered. They can't the blows. If you times, you know, when Thurman perished in the car in the in the plane crash nineteen Seventy-nine very poignant Reggie Jackson's in right field. And you see him visibly balding with his hat and his head his his hand his head in his hands. So it it actually got a little bit better. But it was obviously always dicey. Reggie and Thurman Munson look at that does that just screen eighteen seventies. That takes your glasses. Mustache, these guys blue-blocker. Right. Yeah. You're right. Number one. Jack versus Kobe Jack and went on their three. Two thousand and two two thousand and the two thousand to two thousand three season shack at a toe injury was banged up a little bit and Kobe started to get upset obviously wanted to win four in a row. He couldn't do it without shack. But then in two thousand four they got the postseason, but they lost to the San Antonio Spurs that year, but then in two thousand and four things got dicey. Because this was the year of Kobe's Colorado issue rape, the rape charges. And then because he was coming off a knee injury. Shack told Kobe man, you should pass the ball more. Give me the rock more. I know how to be a guard. You don't talk about being guard. Your fat not a shame. And before you know, it just started getting deeper and deeper and deeper in the feud lasted for a long time until shack was dealt after.

In New York City hero adored him they did he helped he was he. When the Yankees finally got, back to the, World Series they got swept in seventy six but Munson had a wonderful World Series battle over four hundred and then the, Yankees won the World Series seventy, seven seventy eight Now here we are. In seventy nine and and this tragedy. Happens August second it's just awful to read the details that he. Was, still alive and that was. I thought that was the first story that grabbed my. Attention this. Morning I. Started to. Read it and I thought you know I mean I it's, it's a fascinating gripping story but, it makes for heroin and very very sad to believe it's nineteen seventy nine which makes it almost thirty, nine years ago unbelievable When we, come back boy a freak accident on the Golan has killed a city and this is. Terrible Yeah we got, the presi news today unbelievable hope you're enjoying this.

In I started as a, weekend sports history, channel two and this happened and I never really met him I was in the locker room when I first started out, and he glared at me once and I consider. That an honor looked like who who the f for you at Munson was famously a prickly with the media, right but, his teammates absolutely? Loved him in the door you actually got to, know the family extremely well over the years. His wife and kids his wife Diana lovely lovely woman they held the, Thurman Munson dinner and they continue to hold it every year I was there MC for. I don't know maybe fifteen years and, every year there, would honor athletes, all over America. With the Thurman Munson award who's quite a dinner but Diana's a wonderful wonderful woman. And her kids What happened was after the funeral the, Yankees? Came home to play a baseball game and I. Took my camera crew from channel to into the stands you're allowed. To do that back, then and, while they, were announcing. That they had a shot of Reggie Jackson famously crying out right field and. They left home played empty, when the the, Yankees took the field I had my cameras trained on fans in the stands a Yankee Stadium yeah Carl openly weeping openly, weeping I'll he was, in New York City hero Doored him they they did, he helped, he was he when the Yankees, finally got back to the World Series, they got swept in seventy six but Munson had a wonderful World Series battle over four hundred. And. Then the Yankees won the World, Series seventy seven seventy eight now here we are, in seventy nine and and this tragedy happens August it's just awful. To read the details that he was. Still alive and that was I thought that was the first story, that grabbed my attention this morning I started to read and I. Thought you know it's it's a fascinating, gripping story but it makes for heroin and very very. Sad to believe? It's, nineteen seventy nine which what. Makes it almost thirty nine years ago unbelievable When, we come back boy a freak, accident on the killed a city and, this is terrible yeah we got the presi news today unbelievable all right but let's get some. "Eighth inning and then they thought blame is now on the players but there was a guy on deck who would have batted had demanded you're not given that out to the other team unless the guy unless the guy hits into a double play which guy the guy that's going to give this it's it's going to do the sacrifice but i've seen plenty of guys pull you managers in situations say let him hit away bulb six six four three dental oh no no absolutely those tickets at but that absolutely can happen however that is factored into the run expectancy and you can run the numbers on these things and on the ball large now everything has to be tailored down to your specific keen like how good as they hit or that standing there how good is the guy on deck but on the by and large you should at least be aware that when you buntha guy over to second base and now you've given up that out you have now reduced the chances of scoring multiple runs and reduced the chances of scoring even one run you should at least be aware of that michael a my question and i'm sure the question of the of some of the listeners would be who does all of this research i mean they they have to a broken down and i believe the the you went back or the research you've cited has gone back decades to uh to actually hear what what's more funding look it up baseball stuff i mean we i used to compare the batting average is between thurman munson and carlton this is no if you're a baseball manager wouldn't wouldn't then someone on a research project can say hey can you you run the numbers does it help when i the guy over i got your business if you don't do that what are you thinking what are you doing oh i see i do a i do a day of that and i just i just think it's so exhaustive to up to come up with with all of this now you are not saying i assume that the sacrifice bunt is never in order although it could definitely like for example you actually increase increase the chances scoring a single run when you have a guy on second base with nobody out that you're an extra innings and you're you can walk off with a win you're.

"Seen a couple of others suspensions this year with the demanding machado incidents in barns for boston and all that stuff and i think we'll probably be in that similar kinda thing of fivegamer threegame or something like that yeah think think he should have done a little bit more maybe try to protect hunter strickland 'cause i thank you don't catch your you know that you battery may you're slow see you you're supposed to help now um i think him standing behind play and doing whatever protecting himself you know it's heart if harper charged the mound and it's gonna be a brawl no matter what you know you gotta do a little bit to protect your teammates and not take about yourself from a ticket selfish because i think the whole thing was very selfish on strictly art but your post he could have done a little bit more to try to prevent uh that from happening maybe the helmet doesn't happen on another i agree i think you've got a good i for what you just said and i think he expressed that well if you think a thurman munson or bob brenly or uh any other catchers uh you know in the game hardnosed catchers catches are the leaders like you say uh and pose just standing there and not even at you know to steps or three steps that he doesn't have to tackle harbour you know and not ask your dad but certainly you're baseball instinct i think speaks gotta make in asserted the player he is and you know he's a cleaner player in his an outstanding hitter he's probably gonna be a hall of fame catcher some but as far as being that kinda guy on the field that's not him it's not his personality and i think it showed and i would have felt better if he took four five steps their harper adjust to try to restrain him at that point because everybody maybe maybe he'd given dental all day maybe a dozen that yes i think you're right i think you're right in on i understand his injury history and all that stuff but the baseball instinct at that point is you know you're not thinking oh my goodness at a concussion i'd better not do anything if you're that kind of baseball player.
