Bonsai Trees: A Privilege To Cultivate

"Your plants of the week. Well it is plants than this time and and it's on purpose I am privileged to have. Because i've kind of created them bone. Cy i bone side now. I'm gonna pretty loosely defined as a as it. Is i think a japanese turn. Perhaps if you go back far enough so chinese term but it boils down to a plant in a tree now. That's very very loose but in boils down to in the case of my plants i have various bone side dishes and well official ones as well as some makers on my part various old antique things The the shallow is just inch and a quarter. Most of them are about an inch and a half deep and then a couple of them. I kinda cheated a little bit us. Some old vessels if you will that are probably three and a half inches deep now that boils down to a mighty flat root system. Most root systems are flatter than we think in the first place even out in the forest and front yard and so on in this case. We're talking about several of my plants which have obtained a significant age for me. Now they're they're Growing in a tray the tray is not flat. Although i've seen that actually done where you very carefully drip water on to the root mass so it it just looks like it's just sitting in a pile of the soil but in any event it's a lot of fun. I have several different kinds of plants. I have Presently a juniper seedling and a text the seedling that i so to speak found this fall in one of my quick cleanup situations i left them going to dig them in the spring. I'm going to be very careful in doing so. They will probably have a root deeper than. I'm going to be able to have by dishes. But at the same time they're going to go into containers bonsai trees if you will and they will start their life on toward Hopefully three hundred years. And the reason i say three hundred is i had the good fortune of being the national arboretum. A number of years ago when it collection of i think few as sixteen is is memories of fading. But anyhow i think it was just sixteen major bone size now. They were in dishes little deeper three and four inches and maybe three foot wide cetera. These plants ranged up to as i recall three hundred and sixty four years of age now. How does that happen well that he picks his first son to take care of the daddy. Does this through the generations and they get that old and then they end up in an arboretum under very careful care and this this probably thirty years ago that i saw them So that when. I tell you that that few plants came here by ship on the high seas in trays protected boxes. If you will that collection of sixteen plants. If i remember right i was told they were insured for six million dollars because they are absolutely irreplaceable. All you can do with the insurance money as be able to start over again or by some some mid age when at only one hundred and fifty years so mark this is a. It's a fun thing to do. You can as i do. I try to create accent precipitate. Now there are forms factual forums and the the bone side collectors and growers Work with these forms wire they do all kinds of things to create the shape. They want usually. It's in one of the bonified classes. All of mine are simply trimmed for character. And i have the greatest fun of that. How well more than half our outdoor plants they are presently so to speak buried or under a pile of leaves in the end of the compost bin getting cold staying cold getting their their normal winter rest and then the the well tropicals are in here. Sitting right near where i'm speaking from they. They are in growth very minimal growth at this point and they The the beauty of these plants is. You do have to be a little careful. But i don't water them more than once a week. Some few that are a little bit larger trae per their size. I water even once a one and a half weeks. You wanna keep them growing for sure that you don't really want to push them certainly not this time of year. This is not gross. Time for normal plant. So i'm keeping them alive. I'm happy with them. They seem to be happy with me. i like to think they add a little clean hair to my my house but i'm not sure you just don't need quite get as involved as i have become. I got bitten by this bug. Probably thirty five years ago Have lost a few along the way but I have a. I think there are twenty total plants and and i do it for

Caring For A Variegated Rhododendron

"Of the week is eight plant and yet it represents a great number of others. I happen to have gotten a hold of a variegated rhododendron a number of years ago. Little thing at that time and i was almost unaware of their their ability to do what they do. My now is approximately three feet tall. Approximately two and a half feet across the top. And that's just what rhododendrons new and more for that matter however this one is decidedly variegated. Now it's it's a fairly rich more or less normal rhododendron green but then it has cream streaks edges tips spots. It's just. It's just a plant that i can. Well i know where it is. And it's kinda hidden from traffic. But i think even traffic in the street they could see it. It's it's light and break. It is much color as you think of color chart but it's quite attractive this time of year and it's almost the only thing. Well i certainly in. My case is the only thing in that area that is really attractive and interesting at this time of year. The the one trick to them and i i had to learn this from the same guy that supplied oh four years or so after i had it was starting to show more green leaves and i say well what's happening with the plane. He said well. You're not bruening off the green of wait. A minute said well. They will revert fairly easily. So see full. Green leaf look to see if there are others on that same stem that are variegated. It's still you leave it if not cut it off. That's why i've been doing that. So i mostly a variegated plants which this time of year not else's much sparking With color it's it's very interesting and something. I recommend all variegated plants per the need for some interest this time of year

Searching For Indoor Beauties

"Now because it's just grasses embarking things all of which i enjoy but we now have to look indoors for plants by that meaning. They're there I just walked by a whole raft of them. grafted tack time all kinds of sizes shapes and colors. Very very cute interesting and so on then right next to those was a plant. That is in flower right now. Indoors of course qalandia. Then african violence come into their own right now. Now they have been in of course before now but they're still outstanding at this point in time and then many large and small tropicals by that meaning the size the plant as well as the size of the leave and then some of the variegated tropicals posts and Some of the ivy's and so on are very pretty in their variegated nature and then if we look around and have taken care not to have too much water too much cold and so on on our poinsettias. They're probably still in half decent bloom at this time. I know that mine are and then looking back. You're cutting off of a white one and kept the breakfast kept the stems. The flowers dip stuck in a little vessel of water and i waited and waited and waited. Made sure the water stadium and then all of a sudden it's starting to show some new green leaves and lord knows the little rascal has rooted. I'm going to take a clear on through this winter out into the yard next summer. Let it develop. And i'm going to have a white one of my own so to speak next winter so those are the things that are happening right now and and one of the things too that is backing this statement of mine. The industry keeps track of sales and gross of of what is being grown so much like any other industry keeps track and the sales and a well. Let's call it. Sales of indoor plants has exploded this year. Many people being trapped inside needed something besides the dog or the cat would screaming kids and they have turned to indoor plants. And it's it's showing on actual sales records and that's good now one of the other things that i find really very interesting. Because i've looked at it several times a month apart. Countertop earns a friend of mine's wife has a very attractive when she grows six different herbs. Right on the countertop luminaries in the top of it place to put six pots little holders On and off switch well. It's a time thing. She tries to get sixteen hours of sun or sun light on these plants every day and loves to cook with fresh herbs. So there's all kinds of things that can be doing and color right now. Well what you should do is get one of those herb gardens and give it to your brother the gourmet and let him cook a nice dinner. If he was closer you can believe that would have been done. He he keeps over. A number of things in one is a bay plant now. I'm not gonna liberate too much but that would be plant has been cut back down to three feet tall. He totes it into the family room. Whether it's good light each fall brings it back out into the garden. Each spring and uses bay leaves galore in all of his cooking. So there's there's all kinds of things like that Sometimes i wish it closer. Sometimes we're about to write distance apart but when it comes to food and him being chef. I really wish he was a whole lot closer. There you go. Hey you know. Gardening indoors in the wintertime is different. Because there's limited light so limited growth right surely so mark and and then not only limited light but limited humidity many homes or dryers in the sahara desert by actual readings they're under thirty percent moisture in the air and so on Can and does shut plants down. I don't mean it kills them but they are not growing much right now. They should be in good light. They should be kept moist not wet but moist and no fertilizer right now while they're resting but it's just a different kind of gardening Where you may have had to water those plants if you keep the other things indoors all the time. You may have had to water them. Once a week. In the summer spring summer fall. Now you might even get by. They might even get by with every two weeks The best way to tell is put the first knuckle of your big finger into the soil if it's dried down that roughly one inch then it's time to water water to the point. Soya soiled gets moist. Excess water drains away. And then you don't water again onto maybe up to two weeks so it's just a whole different kind of gardening. Respecting the plants means where they don't have greatest needs while near dormant. Don't push him. Don't over water but keep minnesota on at least good ambient light at the site of a window so that they will continue to grow and be beautiful for you. Why

Lead and Discover Your Purpose from Your Job Dr. Michael Colburn - burst 12

"In my view. Productivity is the ability to make choices. That's the fundamental piece. Going back to stephen covey remember steven kevi. Gosh circle of so. So he said there's a circle of of of concern visual things. That's all the stuff that's going on in our world around us. You know it could be your job or just in in the world and some of the stuff there that you feel kind of difficult or are frustrated because there's a lot of stuff going on you can't do anything about right. Stephen also talked about. There's a smaller circle in there. It's called a circle of influence. That's the stuff that you care about to you that you can do something about so what i found. Because that's the first chapter my book. I find what happens when you find yourself in a situation where you can't do anything about it. Apparently where you feel like you can even make choices. So there's three fundamental questions. We have to ask. Not what is wrong. Why why do i feel so bad. I can't do anything. So what is it you care about. That's causing you this frustration. I care about my children. I care about success of the organization. I care about a whole bunch of stuff. Then the second question is a powerful question. So what can you do about that. J. people can always answer that question. I always say a small can is better than a big cannot. So then what happens is and i tell stories in my book about that and then the third question which is the most powerful question after that is of all the cans. What will i do. And i think the word will is powerful because that that is ownership and slow by going from the frustration to the can to the will you can. You can translate things into into action. And that's a powerful feeling. You have and what happens is when i do that because i get the same feelings. Everybody else when i do that it. It tends to remember that cubby circle it tends to make that circle of influence grow. Here's the thing about those three questions. And i loved these three questions and i hope people wrote these down and i'm going to review them again but i think one of the things that happens in these three questions that we dashed against cider circle of influence that first question. What do i care about. I think you've gotta get honest first of all with that and even if it sounds selfish you have got to be honest with you. Say you know what. I care about a care about me and what i want. And if that's i think it's you have to get down to that level of honesty being able to look at yourself. I mean that's what it is. What it is right. And so i mean we we. I think we have to. We have to be really honest with you if you're if you care about money and that's what you care about. Then that's what you care about. This isn't we're not talking about something. Bigger and magnanimous that is ethereal and out there. We're talking about just being. Okay what is it that you really care about. And then what can i do. I think this is a place where they gotta get on his too because they short side themselves so quickly because they immediately go well. There's nothing because they get their migdal gets hijacked in the middle of the brain their emotions take over and the go. There's nothing i could do nothing. I can do nothing. I'm stuck here right. That's not the question. The question is what can you do. Rate and people shot down. I have had clients coaching clients. Who you know. We'll say throw up their arms there. I don't know what to do anymore. And i'll say well what can you do. I can't do anything it's like. It's a reflex action. Well that's why the first questions important it have a real discussion about. What's really important to you. What you really care about. And and i really find that deep down people feel bad about ninety year old person deep down on people unless you have some really deep psychological problems right people can discover something beyond themselves and and what happens is the per- the person who says well only care about money. What they have is a very small universe around them right circle. Is it it off three feet from them. And and i'm not sure if someone is in that situation i can help them much At that point except to have them think through a had them question your own values right. So how does that make you

Native Groundcovers with Duncan Himmelman

"Com. But as i mentioned in the introduction. I'm now eradicating some naughty plants. Well oh yeah very much familiar And i i agree with you in terms of plants. Like and japanese pachysandra You know back forty years ago people were saying. Hey here are some great options for you and now fast forward. We're regretting every moment of having planted any of those in our yard so absolutely My interested in native ground covers of course comes from switching out those particular Particular ground cover options to Have native plants that can provide ecosystem benefits and provide alternatives to the lawn. Yes the naughty uninvited mental lawn. That doesn't do much for wildlife. And we momo and use all kinds of non-sustainable things in the process of doing so in feeding it in whatever so yeah prentice amazing so voided at all costs. So you've been thinking about grant covers for a long time as i recall. I think you even did. Maybe part of your doctoral work or some graduate work at cornell years ago on ground covers didn't you. I mean this has been a long interest. Yeah has In the urban horticulture institute at cornell and we were looking for a ground covers that would survive. Urban conditions and the premise of the research was to use woody plans instead of herbaceous plants and the reason being that what he plans year round structure. And if you're in In a city like or urban environment you can appreciate the fact that herbaceous ground covers. I'll lose their foliage over winter and people could step on them and compact the soil so we were looking for shrubs in point of fact That would be up to three feet in height and have some opportunity to spread and cover the ground fairly quickly so Yeah it was a an interest of mine at that time and you know in terms of recommending shrubs as ground covers. People have kind of shied away from that because they think of copper has traditionally being something that's low to the ground six or so inches and spreads but a number of shrubs it can Fill that role yes and in some spots especially you want that extra dimension i mean plus it really like i have a hillside just out on a on a very steep site in. Just there's a small sort of flat backyard area and then a water garden and then there's a steep incline again. You know where the property rises again. And i have a lot of ground covers on that area. It's a it's a. it's a tough spot to get in there and work in all the time you know. It's it's precarious. So it's great to have things that are kind of permanent and solid and been there a very long time and they don't have to get in there all the time and you know dead head or tweak constantino what i mean mean. There's a lot of maintenance that goes in to Pervasive ground covers and one of the One of the primary shrub plants. That i like to recommend for that exact situation a hillside. That's full sun facing Well drained is grow fragrance. su mac. It's it's the best choice for so many so many situations because it roots in quite easily. It spreads slowly but You know steadily and it has a lot of beautiful features such as the green foliage during the spring and summer and they turn beautiful beautiful crimson and wine reds in the fall so It's a plants that we were of course in our graduate research cornell and i see more and more being used out in the landscape whether it's urban commercial or even residential so great choice for that that kind of situation they love full sun.

What's the Best Time to Eat Dessert?

"When is the best time to eat dessert. I've heard that it's better to eat it immediately. Following a meal because the protein and the meal will help stabilize the blood sugar. But i'm often too full after my meal to enjoy desert. I'd prefer to wait a couple of hours. In fact i often crave a sweet bite a couple of hours after eating his that. My blood sugar plummeting well. This is an interesting question. Let's start by taking a look at how eating dessert affects your blood sugar. Our blood sugar does go up after we eat and not just desert but this is not necessarily a problem in fact it's how the system is designed most of the carbohydrates we consume are broken down into glucose which is then absorbed into the bloodstream when blood sugar levels go up. It triggers the release of insulin from the pancreas which ushers the glucose out of the bloodstream and into the cells of the body. They're the glucose used as fuel or if no more fuel is needed it's stored for future use. It's also true that carbohydrates cause a faster rise in blood sugar when they're eaten by themselves but this is also not necessarily a problem if it's not a huge amount of carbohydrate then no matter how fast it's absorbed your blood. Sugar can only get so high and then assuming that your body is capable of producing insulin and your cells are reasonably responsive to its effects. Your blood sugar will gradually returned to normal regardless of how quickly or slowly it's absorbed however eating an excessive amount of sugar or carbohydrate can be a problem for one thing no matter how slowly it's taken up into your bloodstream. It all gets in there eventually. So if you are consuming more calories than you can use. The excess will be stored as fat. But what happens if your body is not able to efficiently. Clear that sugar from your blood into your cells because it's possible for the cells to become resistant to the effects of insulin. And when this happens. The sugar isn't cleared as effectively from the bloodstream. Only is it not available then as an energy source for yourselves but chronically high blood sugar can lead to a number of serious health issues. Insulin resistance is often the first step in developing type two diabetes. A lot of us. Worry that if we eat too much sugar too often it will lead us to develop insulin. Resistance or diabetes. But now we understand. It's more the other way around insulin. Resistance or poorly controlled diabetes results in chronically. High blood sugar. It turns out that eating a lot of sugar or eating foods that are rapidly converted into blood. Sugar are not the primary risk factors in the development of insulin resistance. The primary factors are excess body weight especially around the waist and a sedentary lifestyle. Now that doesn't mean that eating a lot of sugar have consequences if your body weight starts to drift up whether from over eating sweets or any other food that does increase your risk of insulin. Resistance in other words for those who do not have diabetes or insulin. Resistance the short term impact of desert on your blood. Sugar is probably not as big a concern as the long term impact of desert on your body weight. Our podcast received support from aero garden. Aero garden is the world's number one indoor garden system it's a way to grow your own veggies and at home with no son soil or green thumb required. If you've always worn a mask thank you if you haven't learn more at h. dot. Virginia dot gov so. Should you wait before eating dessert. Anita wondered for example whether the fact that she starts to crave a sweet treat a couple of hours after eating might be assigned that her blood sugar is plummeting a couple of hours after a full meal. Your blood sugar may be beginning to return back to baseline. But that's not the same as plummeting and it's not a problem. It's fine for your blood to remain at baseline. For a couple of hours. Your cells will still have plenty of energy from your last meal. It's more likely that once we're no longer full our minds simply return to the thought of that appealing desert. There's a really big difference between being not full and being actually hungry and when sweets and snacks sound good but vegetables or another healthy choice doesn't sound that good. That's usually a sign that were not. Actually hungry were responding to other triggers such as boredom habit or simply the presence of attempting food. So how can we responsibly. Enjoy desert in terms of managing your blood. Sugar there's really not a big difference between eating dessert with your meal or a couple of hours later even though you feel less full after a couple of hours there's likely to still be enough food making its way through your digestive system to cushion the blow in fact there's even something called the second meal effect which means that a- protein-rich meal can blunt the effect of carbohydrates. Eaten up to four hours later waiting. A couple of hours might allow you to enjoy your dessert a little bit more than you would immediately after the meal and if we're going to have dessert let's be sure and enjoy it on the other hand waiting until later. Could tempt you to eat more than you would if you were to eat it with your meal so if you prefer to eat your dessert a couple of hours after dinner just be sure. The portion sizes stay reasonable. And if you want to enjoy desert with your meal you could always eat just a bit less of that main meal so that you have room for a bite or two have desert without over filling your stomach and finally whether or not you have diabetes and or not you choose to have dessert or when you choose to enjoy it. There is a simple and pleasant way to lower post meal. Blood sugar levels. Just take a fifteen to thirty minute. Walk around the neighborhood. It will help with digestion. It'll keep those blood sugar levels steadier while you digest your food and may even help you sleep a little bit. Better

CNET's iPhone 12 drop test

"You've no doubt heard. Apple claim that its new iphones. The twelve edition has glass. That while may not be unbreakable is four times less likely to break than previous editions. I take them at face value. But i wasn't willing to throw the phone at the floor to find out however our friends had seen it. They wanted to give it a try. They've got a bigger budget than i do. And they've decided that Yes indeed apple. Claims are true. Let me tell you about their test. One it survived the pocket purse tumble thrown into a purse dangling with keys didn't scratch they even rubbed sandpaper on the phone to find out if it would make a mark. Yes it surprise surprise. When's the last time you pulled out sandpaper to try to send your phone. Drop one three feet screen side down. They threw did indeed throw it on the floor. They said they got a few dance around the edges but the screen didn't crack then. They tried it three feet backside down and guess what the back of the phone cracked. Okay this is something that i i have done myself many times. I actually ended up cracking the back more than i cracked the front. Neither of it is pretty a six feet. Throw screen side down. Meaning the glass is going to hit the ground. And i would think he would crack. All seen. that got was a debt. Then they did nine feet drop screen side down using stepladder. Something that most of us will not be doing amazing. Amazing glass didn't break. They got dance but the glass didn't break kids. Don't try this at home. But it's good to hear that apple's claims maybe have some truth to them. I wouldn't go for throwing my phone down nine feet but assuming drop it because i drop every addition of the phone and i've cracked a lot of them over the years. How about you.

Beware of High Rooted Trees

"I know one of the main questions that you get Anytime someone's going to plant a tree is so they ask you about the roots. And am i going to have problems with the route. So what about the gingko the gingko not so much so mark and i it's a generalization. That is risky. But trees roots can grow only where they can get sufficient air or oxygen now Many trees don't usually have high routes and give long of trouble if it's a real nasty clay soil that doesn't allow for much aeration down below those roots can be relatively shallow and caused the more to bump and so on the the other thing then in terms of routes is I like to think. In terms of routes that will normally grow deep enough to keep the tree up especially since reaching out over my house and therefore when when we're thinking trees i like to think pretty well decent soil but that's not always available and then plants that will be durable such as the gingko Then even though high rooted silver maple some of the red maples and so on Can grow in shallow soil the oaks however and and to a certain extent. Kinko's the routes apparently are not apparently but are more able to get air a little deeper in the ground and they will usually come down flare out that trump will come down pretty much straight and then the roots flare out into the lawn. And right now i have a forty five year old. Probably a fifty five year old tree in my front yard. That is open that is It has a mulch around but there are no roots. Giving me any trouble in this length of time beyond about three feet out from the trunk so All kinds of possibilities. Honey locust is another one. I have soiled. That is decent. Enough roots can be deep. I've heard other people complain significantly about honey. Locust routes being hi. It's all a matter of the tree per se but then also the circumstances on whether they can read or not and that if i may takes me over to some of the tallest biggest most memories you've ever seen routes aren't more than about three feet even ground they they There are some that are definitely deeper than that. But by and large at surface not so much rooting right as a young tree then at about six inches down roots start to develop quite quite happily and then some can go on down to three feet. I'm stop it's six inches. I've seen trees blow over the big trees that have no route beyond six or eight inches deep in the ground because of wet soil or just simply can't breathe so all those things fit into the fact that there's no one thing about any of them.

Owning a business on the front line of sea-level rise

"North Carolina's Outer Banks are dotted with vacation beaches and historic communities but the sweeping water views do not only draw tourists to give local to front row seat to sea level rise. Many like Jamie Henderson more frequent floods. Anderson is the owner of downtown books on Roanoke Island since she opened the store there eight years ago it's flooded six times with anywhere from an inch, two feet of water. Sometimes, storms at the costs and other times all it takes is wind and a high tide. No rain, no hurricane, but the waters inch deep in my store. To protect your inventory Anderson keeps books off the floor. We use lots of tables and don't do anything to the floor. We just kind of paint it with floor paint every couple years because it's going to get wet. So there's no point having any carpet down there. Before big storm she has what she called moving parties were volunteers help her put everything up higher than three feet and she packs valuable items. So she can take them with her despite the Hassle Anderson plans to stay put. She says, she lose customers if she moved. We're going to tough it out and continue to be there, and it's just kind of part of our story.

Hurricane Delta steams across Gulf of Mexico

"We are following a developing story out of the Gulf of Mexico region. As Hurricane Delta takes aim over there you can see by the map let's get right to CNBC's shepard. Smith with the latest airship, it does look like it could be terrible for the folks out there in Louisiana, and Mississippi not going to be good not at all the the latest is five o'clock. Update five eastern we just got that bring it to you. I, if you look at the top edge of this, it's so close to land. It's incredible. It looks like that is going to go over parts of Lake Charles and points east. A lot of rain has happened already Jackson Mississippi over the last twenty, four hours. They're estimating ten inches seven to eight inches around Lake Charles and if. You look at the cone. For this thing, it's not just a coast storm. This thing is going to go inland and rain and rain and rain I want to show you the cone of uncertainty if you will for this storm and there it is category too when it comes to shore and then it will weaken very quickly still be a tropical system, but not a hurricane as it moves. UPS skirts along Nashes Mississippi into the Jackson Mississippi area. Jackson. Mississippi. GonNa have reigned for at least the next twenty, four hours. This storm has weakened a little bit but not since the last report, the new update from the National Hurricane. Center has the central pressure at nine hundred and sixty six bars, which is up, and that means the storm is weakening. You look at go back to that last. Loop. You can see at the bottom the is breaking up on the bottom. That's sheer. The I is falling apart a little bit not a moment too soon let's go to Lafayette Louisiana Embassies Jay. Grazed Air Force. Wow He's getting wet you Jay. Yup. Well, conditions really intensifying over the last thirty, forty, five minutes the rain picking up a wind as well. We've got up the tropical fun print. Don't want to walk you down to the Million River and this is what you. Got All this. It's already over banks here. That's going to be a big problem. We've got sick maybe seven of these conditions left to go we're going to see sheets of rain continues to fall in the Lafayette area we could see up to a foot of rain before Paul said. And Wind Gusts better go be over hurricane strength again it for you be a real rough ride here for the next six or seven. And as you were talking about, this is an area here like Charles just to the West that's already been dealing with the effects of Laura category four storm. So they've been working for six weeks now worried that that works going to be walked away by this storm of move in mighty tough Jay gray one of four correspondence we have in the either storm. What is show you the storm surge in exactly what that's going to be like he said, vermillion, they're expecting up to eleven feet of. Storm surge there much less over by new. Orleans. Mouth of the Mississippi two to four feet lake pontchartrain one to three feet. So it's not going to be horrible near new. Orleans. But on the west side of Louisiana Lake Charles, we've just got battered at the end of August. They still don't have roofs on most of their houses that place is about to get hit

31. Dive Flags, EN-ROADS climate solution simulator, diving the Andrea Doria - burst 02

"Many of us go on die vacations to exotic spots and do a majority of our diving from a boat. I did a piece on boat diving etiquette back in February. And you can check out the archives if you're interested one of the things we don't have to worry about when we were diving from a boat is having a die flag that all changes if we are sure diving. You'RE GONNA have to fly or carry your own die flag now. I I learned about die. Flags in my patty open water diver course like most of us have and we actually used a die flag when we were doing our certification dives at Fort Weather. All in Jamestown Rhode Island. Now I went back to my original open water manual to look at what they covered. Yeah I still have that manual. That was before we had the electronic learning. Now we're all familiar with the red rectangular flag that has the white diagonal stripe but remember. There's also blue and white double tailed pennant. Or Alpha flag that signifies diving operations now according to Patty. The flag must be large enough to be seen from at least one hundred yards or meters away so to give you some perspective. Think about this. You're standing on the goal line of a football field and that you're able to see and more importantly identify that flag placed on the other goal. Line I want to cover a couple of other things about your die. Flat your flag is supposed to be flying so do accomplish. This usually have a wire across the flag to keep it extending now. You GotTa make sure that that wire is in place and there are no rips or tears in the flag the might make go limp remember. You're on that far goal line and it's Kinda hard to pick out the flag if it's not flying also. The flag needs to be seen by any boats in the area and should be at least three feet above the surface. Now that's absolutely necessary. When there are choppy seas the laws in your area may have special requirements. So you're going to have to check them out on the distances etc. But if they don't you WanNa stay within fifty feet of your diet. Flag and boats are supposed to stay one hundred two hundred feet away from die flat. Now I can tell you from experience and seeing it. That doesn't always happen. Boats don't usually respect. Sometimes they don't respect that one hundred two hundred foot rule. The die flags pretty simple is usually has a float and nears. This poll that goes through the middle of it runs through the the float and it usually has a counterweight on the bottom to keep the pole upright. Now you also have a line attached to it. That usually seventy five hundred feet normally polypropylene wrapped around the holder. Like I said it's pretty simple until you get into water you have to practice holding it leading out the line keeping the float above you not trailing way behind pulling the float underwater or getting tangled up in the line of another die flag or your gear. We've seen it all at our open waters in Jamestown. Also remember you need to hang onto your holder. We've seen that to die. Flags get away from people. Remember die. Flags are another important piece of your safety equipment and it's only safe. You know how to use it. So when you're on your shore dive be cognizant of what you're doing with that die flag practice with it and be safe with it.

"three foot" Discussed on Christopher Lochhead Follow Your Differentâ„¢

"I mean there's just it would be Shawn Shawn Shawn and then whoever else would be next depending depending on who resonated with whatever individual and and I don't while I do speak professionally. I'm not really a professional speaker in the way that you are and I said and there's nothing anybody who spoke at that event can do that would make that but not true like I can give the best speech of my life and I'm pretty good public speaker and in spite of the fact that you know you share a Hairdo and all that I I can't get close to you in terms of being memorable to an audience. It doesn't matter what I do and the big offer offer me about this and I'm I'm going somewhere with this comments. Dr Shawn is I think it would be very easy for most people to look at you or other people in somewhat similar situations to yours and say it would be hard to have competitive additive advantages in in pick field. It'd be very easy to to skate to the negative and and hang out there for much of your life and the bigger house I was sharing this with Kerry was isn't it interesting that just in the domain called public speaker. This guy has taken what most people would say is a physical liability and turn it into literally literally a competitive advantage that it because of the fact that I'm not three feet tall in a wheelchair I can't compete with you is the speaker and like there's it's no greater example to me of taking your different and turning it into an unfair competitive advantage than what you have done with your life and you even said it in your speech and I want to get to that in the second but but I I just want to take a pause there and I got to imagine you've thought about this but you've taken this thing that most people call a liability and turned it into an unfair asset. I mean I crawl my appearance marketing gold and that's why I when I speak to medical professionals when I go into hospitals or specialists. I'll get up in front of them and I'll say I don't have a genetic disability genetic advantage. I said because try scrubbing me from your mind. Go home and try to forget me. I'm like herpes to the soul and NCAA. You're not itchy. I don't have you don't inch me in that way. Maggie think about let me constantly so here's the thing I knew at a young age probably see started started in the inbound one thousand nine hundred four forty nine now early teens. I knew that I was is going to have challenges in the traditional workforce because I I kind of get a summer job to make a little extra money. I knew I couldn't be a paper boy. I knew that a lot of people wouldn't feel comfortable me babysitting their kids you know because I couldn't scoop coop them up in a fire and take him out of the House night. There were a lot of things that I was going to challenge and then so then I went out to try to find a job in the summer and I found in jobs that I can physically do that. I was getting discriminated against because they had preconceived notions and this is the early nineties he's and the Americans with disabilities act just past that it wasn't really fully implemented and I applied to work at a consumer consumer electronic consumer like store selling stereos a turned me down. I tried to get a job being a phone person at a a chiropractor. Golf is just taking reservations tried to be a dispatcher churn at a limousine company. All things could physically done that every single time to interview a said you're great we love you. Reload your personality but what if we need to go rent on an air and get coffee what we need to get something up high like just blatant discrimination and I just got so discouraged but thank God that I had a wonderful guidance counselor who said Hey I have an idea. What am I paid you seventy five dollars to speak to this other school about what it's like to have a disability you do? It and I'm like seventy five dollars for one hour. I mean in the early nineties tag. That would buy you a lot of stuff. That's I felt like I was multimillionaire and I said sure I'll do it and I get up there and I noticed there is some huge advantage that I had and that wasn't just that I look different. It's that I was comfortable with people looking at me I had to hide is on me in my whole life and now I was finally getting paid for it and I thought this is nights. If people are staring at me for money I could do this and and that's when I started to decide that I was gonna look at speaking like a sport you don't notice about me but I look at speaking support and I I studied the craft I I spent time personally with Les Brown and Tony Robbins Wayne Dyer and Byron Katie Eighty in some of the greats in public speaking of personal growth and I spent time with them physically in that matched what they were doing learned what they learned gamma trainer scenery than out he I I became a doctor of clinical hypnosis. I got all his background is steady Howard to take people on an emotional rollercoaster how to use my body body had to take them to use. At's with them and my mentality was always when I get on that stage I'm going to be the best speaker it not only this conference but these audience members have ever hurt and I I think that competition still today so even though I do that let and pithy training I also take that aggressiveness. I watch basketball and I you know I I love those players that play angry. You know like like Russell. This or Westbrook is explosive in every praise going after it. I feel that way when I take the stage if I don't do an a plus speech if if I get off that stage I was minus. Maybe eight days I I go to work. I get the film ah I recorded almost all my speeches and then I take in depth notes on what could I have done. That would have been more heartfelt more amazing so so yes I do think my appearance gives me the competitive advantage but also I went aggressively all into this you know there's a lot of hats that I aware but I want to go down as one of the greatest keynote speakers to I've ever lived and that level of of determination I've taken taking on for the last twenty four years well and you're certainly there and look I having given a couple of speeches in well. I know that you don't get to that level without practice. I know that a lot of people say oh you're such a gifted speaker and you have all this talent. I know people say those things to you and I know they mean to ms compliments laments and you definitely have some natural I don't know what the fuck talent really means but there's a natural. There's something that is is is drawing you to that for reasons that are obvious when you do it however I also know. You didn't show up that way on your first speech did you a- and that's the thing if you aren't willing to record yourself and then look at your mistakes. You're never going to get great anything because what you track improves it just always does you get better at eating healthier foods. Just just write down all the shit you meet every day. It gets at some point. You're gonNA finally hit that moment where you're not gonNA want to write down that you had another Oreo. You'RE GONNA be like somebody's gotta change here and as long as you can delete as long as you look at the stats you'll just continue to perpetuate traded the negative experience if you're willing to have the courage to look at the stats if you're willing to look at the mistakes you make if you're willing to look ed what's going on in the sense of your business where you're willing to look at it. It will get better over time because he will have that. Irritation is explosive explosive fewer to make you better. I have another friend who is a very successful business person but he sucks as a speaker her and I know why it's because he won't look at his own tapes. I'll say to him. Why would you look at him right ad I don't need to I'm a successful businessman and I'm like yeah but you suck as a speaker people? Leave your audience. How much more of an impact could you make if you put some effort into the craft of speaking you know the greatest leaders leaders of all time that we think are were unusually amazing orders and when you have the craft through the Rhine which in the way in which you influence wants people with your voice in your body it makes a massive impact? What is he just put a little bit of effort? It didn't want it and that's okay however that's a choice everything that we have. It's amazing is because we were willing to take the choices that in the beginning were uncomfortable yes you know and as a side note. I really think if you're an executive or you're an entrepreneur or your leader of any kind you have to have your ask trained in public speaking I believe so because if you're going to be a leader of any more than a few people then you're going to have to stand up in front of those people and and you're GonNa have to say something that moves them to action and a particular kind of action to produce a particular kind of outcome 'cause leaders alternate and get paid to move people to Action that produces outcomes that are powerful and meaningful and make a difference right even being a parent even having having children or you know when you're leading a small team of employees whatever it may be you are speaking right. Everybody's everybody's public speaking period if you're out in front of another human being it's public speaking it's just what size growl do you call a speech. What size sized crowd do you think is public speaking for me? My heart doesn't race. Are we getting into a football stadium. There has to be a good hundred thousand people in the audience from my heart to race and think Oh shit. This is new territory. I remember the first time I did my First Basketball Stadium with like twenty thirty five thousand people that that the heart rates the first time I did it that I will have the adrenaline rush of it for some people that's ten people that's one hundred hundred people and everybody has their number but we all have a number very much now. I want to go back to talking a little bit earlier about you know trying to get jobs jobs and some jobs you couldn't do some jobs you could do but people blatantly discriminated against you and I think.

"I I think a lot of it has to relate to the fact that I wanted them to be proudly and that felt so good that in some uh-huh ways in there's even being real here right now. There's even someone barrasso bubbling up in this moment when I'm about to say but their feelings are the feeling I got from them. Being Proud of me was more enjoyable than money was more enjoyable in so many the other attributes that I would curb a lot of my decisions to make sure I got that feeling and I don't know if this is true all human beings but I think it happens a lot with people who are navient cultures where the family always stays together other from birth to death in live together and they work together in when you have that mentality it feels like treason to say as something or do something that doesn't go along with the group it doesn't agree with the elders and to to break way it. It was difficult it was challenging was painful and in some ways I again little embarrassment bubbling up here here thirty nine years old but in some ways I'm making more like I'm nine thousand nine hundred twenty in some aspects because I'm learning things that people may be felt when they were in college and they finally got the same do things on their own for the first time and they sailed without anybody watching that would give them a scolding look. They just failed on their own. You know buck up even have a beer and just go yeah I just yesterday and Mrs this is kind of like the behind the scenes seems moment. I've always lived at home with my family. Were lived with my wife and I have the Second House that's just off his house and I came over here to work and I needed to cook a frozen frozen dinner and I had never cooked the president. Everybody else's alchemy inside the call up a friend and I'm like okay I can't. I don't have a microwave. If I can reach right now. I only have a toaster oven. How the Hell do you cook a a microwave dinner and a toaster oven and then they said something to me that it made complete sense after they said it at no sense to me before the forensic? Did you read the marks and I'm like wake mccheese like they put directions on the box. I'm like that's just freaking brilliant. I ever cooked frozen dinner album myself and there's those little things at you know. I've never driven a car and that's something that I plan to do is just a lot of little things. I'm still I have this package. Decades of education. Whack help people through their pains in their problems in some ways I'm still learning to walk myself. Learning Studio navigate this world end. Am I'm loving the experience variance of making mistakes and I'm loving the mystery of of figuring out and problem solving things that maybe the other people in their early twenties and how much of that is sort of maybe the natural progression of just maturing and gaining life experience and how much of that is due to some of the physical challenges you have to deal with or are they connected in any way or how should I think about about sort of where you are definitely. There's definitely a connection between the two I think the physical challenge may be amplifies more on and then having that level of independence I I love my life because every read five years or so I try to reorganize it in a way that it didn't look like the previous and in one of the things that it sickens me that I don't want to do in my life that I see a lot of other human beings do is they'll rave one life one hundred times types and if they're lucky to liberal I don't want that I don't I don't WanNa live always seem places stadium. When I go back home to Chicago where I was born and raised I'll go into the local pub we would go to in college high school and and I'll see the same kids sometimes they never left the town and they're still either being a waiter waitress or a bartender their shrugged into see and they're still there and if that works for the mets awesome but that wouldn't work to me? I need to see diverse experiences and I wanNA live. You know people say you bleed in past lives. I like to have many lives slides time. Yeah that's ex- that's exactly the same for me. I feel sometimes I feel like Do you ever have this experience where it's almost like your life is so different today than it was from some other point in in your in your own history that it almost feels like you have somebody else's memories yeah absolutely it was you but it it it. It was but it wasn't right yeah. I I also personally in this. This doesn't I'm not touching on right morals or ethics here but like just personality I I wouldn't hang out with my younger versions usually younger version self the things that and he was interested in her he was doing wouldn't necessarily appeal to me I am I am I loving that and I and I hope that five or ten years version to be now wouldn't WanNa hang out this guy because he's doing cooler Shatin on a next level of intelligence and understanding the world you you know there is a great book called the truth by Neil Strauss and he talks about our every year. You look back in your life. It should have a stack of embarrassing mistakes that you think how the hell did I do that right. What was I thinking and he gave examples just young child child? You know when you're younger. You can't believe you put your pants. You know when you're a kid and I can't believe you didn't have control of your bows vows and Egan's all these different examples and you can't believe that you didn't know how to read and then always late and then you can't believe that you drink so much whiskey that you lost control your bals again again in your twenties thirties forties right exactly yeah and so you know there. There's this maybe wrongful death out there that the version of us should always be the same as you get older but I don't agree with that. I I'm constantly breaking the mold and starting over and trying new scenes in figuring out. What do I believe you had a conversation recently with a buddy and I turned to him and I said okay you know I want to be honest with you and he's like okay and I saved what you just said there? I think that's May maybe media younger version of me would have thought that was funny this version he didn't endow funny that kind of stunned and it didn't feel it and I just need to get to know that it's funny anymore and he was just teasing me and rated. He thought I would like to bond his has guys and I said I I said I think you're basing Neiafu guy you met ten years ago but this guy is not the the same guy and we evolved our friendship in that moment he apologized organs. Nobody did anything wrong. It's just I wanNA make it clear how I'd like treated now and how I like to see the world the kind of friendship I'd like to have at you and fortunately the friends I choose your pretty awesome in so he said I get it and we evolved our friendship right the very moment that incredible and isn't that the hallmark of a great friendship where you can sort of communicate that hey maybe you are different and maybe whatever whatever he was ribbon you about or whatever would have been funny at some point but for whatever reason you feel differently now and a that you could feel comfortable saying that and that'd be it sounds like he was able to modify behavior move forward right yeah and let's be real. I didn't feel comfortable saying you know I but I did it anyway. Just because the level of maturity that I have now is I'd rather have an uncomfortable moment whether it's clarity Dan avoid the ACKWARD NECE and everybody's not on the same page yeah now. Can I ask you about that Yeah so oh I've known and been friends with and been around people in wheelchairs for pretty much my whole life and I worked in a hospital as a young man. My my mom worked in a hospital for years and so as a kid I was an orderly and so none of that sort of environment if you will where people are physically different different was that surprising to me at a at a young age but that said Dr Shawn. I have noticed that when ooh people with more I don't know what to call them anymore. Typical physical abilities maybe meet people in wheelchairs or who who are somehow physically different different than them then it can be very unnerving for them. They can be very uncomfortable. The wheelchair makes them uncomfortable. The the crutches or whatever it is the physical difference difference creates a barrier and you can see it in people's face. Now I met you for the first time when you came role and into a room full of people and and so I saw what happened when you came into that room and at least best I could tell nobody had that experience this with you and so my question. Is there something about the way you are with people that when you roll on into the room you invite people in people kneel down to come close to you. They're instantly. You have them instantly taking photos with you. I'm not a big guy but like I immediately found myself wanting a selfie with with you and you're like hugging me and our two bald heads together and stuff and and so this is a long question I know but you make people want to be physically near you to come to you. You make them comfortable with the your physical difference in their physical difference. How are you so awesome at that and Q. Knowledge? It's something I consciously work at a believe the way I do it is I take ownership for the space around me. ooh I take ownership for how I treat myself and how I want you to treat me and so I teach you to treat me with love and respect an playfulness and a show that first off in my face to my energy and how I carry myself highly speak about myself you will never I won't say never stronger but you will rarely ever hear me publicly degrade myself for the comical sake in self-deprecation. I put on an energy. This is a man you I wanNA be around. This is somebody who is GonNa bring value to your life. He's going to get to know you. He's GonNa make sure that you're being seen in heard as much as you're hearing and seeing him and so I think there's a couple of answers to your question number one. Is I teach you to treat me that way. I do not believe that you have this attitude. I demand you. I implore you. I inspire here you to want to have fun with me. I also want to give up a vibration of who are you and how can we hang out and hug Levi's friends and I I have this belief that I love are human beings. I may not rake argue but I love evolve. You and I think people feel that is I look for in people and in the beginning minded added Clouds Mitch Allan because they didn't have understanding boundaries when I was younger to know like you can love all human beings you don't have to go into business law human beings even level human beings but you don't have to be romantically involved with straight you can have taste and boundaries now that preference however I look for what's amazing and people and I asked them and I remind them of what's awesome. I have this thing and I doing more with women because it shows up more than men are somebody's talking to me and tear themselves down even comically this. I'll stop them and I'll say on you. Don't have my permission to degrade yourself in my presence if you can't control what you do when I'm not around but in my presence I request you not do that. It's just disrespectful and I I hold a space in a standard for people and a lot of people do that. Another thing that I have a belief is when I need somebody in their freaked out about the wheelchair or my size or anything like that I know that that's a reflection of how they feel if they weren't me like if they had to be me. They think that other people aren't comfortable and so it has nothing to do with me. It has everything to do with the reflection of what's going on within them so I don't take it personally. When I see somebody who's our awkward I take on his challenge? They get on any educational opportunity. The let them know how you you you could have a good time daime it.
