"It's time for another installment of sea hunt. It still alive here on scuba shack radio. And this time. We're going back to season three episode thirty eight titled diplomatic pouch diplomatic pouch premiered on september twenty fourth nineteen sixty. Well in this episode. Mike is back in a latin american country named san miguel. His mission is to retrieve a diplomatic pouch from crashed american airplane. The show opens up with mike searching the wreck while his buddies on the surface appearing to be fishing as luck would have it. Mike find the pouch and starts to head to the surface. There's a great shot of the voight swim fins as he ascends but just as mike breaks the surface he's confronted with an armed boat of officials who are pointing their guns at him and asking him if he would be so good to come on board what to do. Quick thinking mike takes a fix on his position and drops the pouch. Who are these armed men. The guy in charge is colonel ramirez and he is the head of the coastal defense. He's cold and tough and goes over. Mike's gear with a fine toothcomb. Just then mike's friend. Paul alexander pulls up with their boat. He tells mikey sorry. That he drifted. The boat drifted off process that they are on vacation. And he's from dallas texas. Colonel ramirez tells them that they are not to dive on the downed airplane at an at the penalty by order of the dictator row. All as is that they will be immediately deported. They are welcome to fish. Just stay away from the airplane. So now paul and mike are on the bridget or boat and paul is upset about the diving when might tells him he found the pouch but he had to drop it. He says he took a position. And we'll be able to find it. But how will that be possible with the colonel watching pause. Got a plan. But mike wants to know i. Where did he get that phony. Southern accent well. Paul's plan involves dragging mike to a local cantina. The club kellyanne. Tae sign is flashing on and off as they enter once inside. They sit down in the bartender heads over the jukebox. A stereo phonic rockall roller and plays a record loudly before waiting on and paul. Something's the bartender nods and mike and pau get up and head for the back room. The ace of pulse leave is one of colonel ramirez. Deputy familiaux who calls the kernel. A pig who goes beyond the law familiar will fight with his fingertips to overthrow the hated dictator. The plane is to get. The plan is to get information from familiaux on whether the colonel is going to put a diver on the wrecked plane. Now the the scene shifts to mike and paul on the water and they're trying to get to the wreck but they're constantly being pursued by the coastal defense. Just then shots are fired from the defense boat. And they're colonel comes alongside and tells them that the penalty for diving on. The wreck is no longer deportation. It's death before they leave familiar hotels. Mike and paul that they are going to have another diver coming from the capital. Soon we now had back to the cantina. We're familiar comes in the bartender. Nods towards the back room in the room familiar hotels mike composite. The situation is desperate. what can they do. Mike knows he will be an underwater hitchhiker. But only familiar can drop a line over the side of the colonels boat you see. Mike can swim to the rack but he needs a ride back. Familiaux says it will be done. So now we have paul mike on their boat watching a coastal defence boat with its diver onboard and her headed out to the wreck plane. Mike tells paul if anything happens he needs to get out of there because he's too valuable. Paul reluctantly agrees as mike. Put the powder into his wetsuit top. Once the divers from the colonel Once the diver from the kernels boot jumps in. Mike is in the water swimming towards where he dropped the pouch. He sees the line. Familial has tossed over the side but now he needs to pop to the surface to get his bearings so he can find the diplomatic pouch just before the men on the boat turn towards mike. He slips beneath the surface a close call. Mike is now underwater searching and searching trying to find the pouch before the enemy divers season. Finally he spots the pouch intact and now he needs to get it out now. Here's where it gets a little strange. Mike is kneeling on the bottom looking at the patch. Trying to figure out and then like maybe how to open it or something. He's got a puzzled look on his face. His back is towards the plane wreck. As he's puzzling over the pouch the enemy divers spots him pulls out his knife and be lines towards mike as he tries to stab. Mike looks like the pouch gets in the way we are now witnessed to a classic underwater knife flight where mike wrestles do knife out of the bad guys hand takes out his own life and you guessed it cuts who's hose. The enemy divers forced to the surface and mike heads under the colonel's boat too high policies the diver surface in figures. There's a problem so he starts to head out. Mike is trying to figure out what to do with the diplomatic pouch when he decides to stick between his back and his doubles now. The colonel suspects that mike is with paul so he starts out in hot pursuit. Mike grabs the line and his underwater hitchhiking begins. The ride is challenging. You can see the strain on his double hose thins. Just as he's about to let go the boat slows down and pulls alongside. Paul familiar searches the boat and said no one is aboard. Paul says he just wants to go home as this is no place for a vacation. That colonel tells them to get out of his country. Once colonel leaves. Paul is despondent at the thought of losing mike just any. Here's mike call out. I think i heard him call pau. Alex i'm not sure. But as paul looks over the side mike tosses up the diplomatic pouch telling him. He forgot his laundry. Mike has yet again the day now. There wasn't any indication in credits as to where this episode was film. The plane wreck looked pretty authentic with the large propeller and debris. I wonder if this was. In the bahamas. So there you have it. Diplomatic pouch from season three of sea hunt.

"Weekly shows. You'll often just there's a. There's a tried and true formula. You record you produce you. Release you record. You produce you release to do that with the daily show you know. Some people can do it. It may be a recipe for burnout. It's that's a lot to do every single day. So there are ways around that you can batch your tasks that is going to be the theme of this day is you can get all of you. Can you can do all of your writing. You can do all of your content planning and record multiple episodes in one. Go so one. One example of that is in the center here batch production. You have maybe two episodes of new content. You have one episode. That's just evergreen that you can run anytime you record all of those together. Do all the production at the same time and then you have three episodes and it's less time planning less time scheduling less time. You know getting out all the equipment. It's a little bit faster but of course not every show can do that. Some shows are more timely. Some shows are new shows so a solution to that might be kind of a blend you could do. The record produce release schedule for those really timely episodes that need to come out tomorrow but in addition to that so that you always have daily content. You could also have some evergreen stories that you you record all together and you have multiple episodes in one recording and production and session the for a science. Show what we'll do is a lot of our content is evergreen but will also cover things like you know the the venus missions that were just announced. You know we will. We can pop in and do a timely story in this process. It's it's very flexible but if you're not a science show like we. Are you know a news. Podcast could possibly run a primer on. How the electoral college works. During every election season or a comedy podcast could re run a segment where like a running joke head originally started so everybody can like here that that little bit of history. There's there's a lot you can do to have content for every day of the week and yet still have time to create the stuff. You really wanna create.

"It's time for another installment of seahorn. It's still alive here on scuba shock radio and this time we're heading back to july thirtieth nineteen sixty for season three episode thirty titled the invader in this episode. Mike is on assignment to a small unnamed. Latin america country where his job is to train a new underwater demolition team in the opening underwater scenes. Mike is with two other divers and there are placing underwater charges. Mike says that in wartime the underwater soldier only has his blade and bundle of explosives. Well when the charges go off you see the divers being violently tossed about but they're okay. They were just far enough away from the concussion back on the boat. Mike tells us that he has started with twenty men but now he is down to their. Is thomas vegas a wealthy princeton graduate and paul ramirez better known as indio an orphan who is happy but can be serious as a barracuda but there is trouble ashore. The scene shifts to the office of the president day president they duran and he's being confronted by an opposition leader so scenario silvano who is calling for revolution against iran's tax bill. Mike confronts scenario storms out. Mike is worried about this little dictator but president duran assures in he was a soldier and all will be well now. We're back on the boat. Where mike still has his hands. Full with a rivalry between tomasz an indio underwater thomason indio get into a fight by training. Mike forces them to the surface. Thomas toes indio that if he kicks him again like that he'll cut his throat. Mike tells ended. They gotta learn to work together to now. Tomas asks to go sure to go on a date with dawn comes trouble. Speedboat approaches the argonaut with a colonel. Who tells them that. President duran has been abducted by solano and being held in an island. Four miles offshore. What can you do ask the kernel. We'll think of something. Mike replies give us until noon. And if you haven't heard from us by then you've never will. The next thing we see is tomasz on the radio and he is talking to survive at the fort. The revolutionary traitor to l. president. He tells them that there will be an underwater attack. Now as mike in dior getting ready their gear we see tomas sneaking a flare gun into his rig back underwater. The three divers are set for a long swim with patrol boats circling around. So mike takes the boys deep into the channel to create a diversion. Mike sends up a surface marker buoy with a time fused bomb on it when it goes off. The fort thinks it's a pto and savannah. Realizes mike nelson is on his way. President they durant says. Mike nelson is an extraordinary man to which ivano replies. He's an extraordinary gag. Man you see. The revolutionaries have set up a concrete and steel screen across the channel. The only way through is to blast but they wanna confused patrol boats and the floor so they set off a series of bombs in different locations while they blow up the screen. One two three bombs go off in the guards and savannah are confused with a concrete and steel screen blown apart. Mike leads the divers through just then tomasz takes off. Where's he going. He makes his way to the sea wall and is ready to fire off his flare gun to signal the four when mike jumped him they didn't tie tomasz to a floating rafts off the island and set off a smoke bomb again to confuse the revolutionaries mike and i had to the other side of the island. They're getting shallower and shallower into a mike. Pops his head up all clear and they get out of the water and ditched her scuba gear. The raft trick worked by tells indio and he tells them to keep them busy while he gets el presidente. Indio starts tossing grenades. all around. the guards are shooting at everything. Now we see. Mike armed with a small revolver while savant is starting to freak out in the cell. He keeps calling out for martinez. President duran smiling smugly as the havoc rains bike sneaks into fort with his revolver and then we see so von. Tell the guard. Go out and find martinez. Well that opens the door from mike to be called in by president day duran. Mike surprises silvano and tells them to call off the revolutionary. When he says no. Mike says he's a peaceful man but he won't hesitate to shoot him. He'll give him the five one two three okay. So von gives up and radio demand to stand down. Mike is florida the revolution and saved l. president day in the final scene. We see mike at the helm of his boat with a metal pin to his chest. His first from a foreign government indio ramirez is now the head of the country's coastal defense once again letter. Nimoy shows up on seahawks where he played indio. The invaders wasn't filmed in a small latin american country to filming was done in silver springs florida. Well i hope you enjoyed this. So we've been talking about the industry for over five years the thing with the industry today versus where it was in two thousand fifteen is. There's a lot more money into it. And why is there more money. It's because podcasting is now mainstream with it. I'd casting as mainstream. Everybody knows what podcast is. Everybody can get podcasts on their smartphone. Everybody knows how to download the podcast award. They can find out really quickly or they probably listen to a podcast and didn't even know it so it is infinitely easier to consume podcasts into except podcasts than it ever was before you don't have to go to your computer download an episode. Put it on an ipod. Take your ipod into your car with some sort of connection kit and listen to it on the car. Listen to the headphones now. You have bluetooth headphones with your smartphone with active noise cancellation that just fit in your ear without any cords. I mean it's so easy compared to what it used to be. And yes there's primarily there for music but you can listen to podcast that way as well and because of that. There's a lot more advertisements that have come into the show so a lot more into the pod space so there's a lot more corporate entities that have entered in you have things like pandora and spotify luminary tried it a little bit. Clear that you can get out of chicago easier than milwaukee usually milwaukee. Is you know. We're kind of like canada south with that. As long as they can. Keep the runway clear enough to get a plane on it though. Fly planes out. But if it gets bad enough i know they. They've shut down a few times. Speak that i mean you you were you were you know. Have built a name and a brand by traveling and speaking. Do you miss the travel aspect this year of getting out there and being on stage like you have no idea of feeling i have an idea. Trust me on the wall. I went into twenty twenty expecting all this international travel. I just changed jobs. And and it was part of that job. Was supposed to include a lotta travel to international conferences and even our our locations and yet none of that happened i did. Rsa and then besides tampa was scheduled to go to singapore and sydney in the two weeks following and in between those two. They shut down all travel. And yeah i've been. I've been here in my home office which i feel guilty saying suffering is pretty pretty awesome office but yeah i i cannot wait to get back on a plane. Fact even allman i have been talking about how a bunch of us are going to go find someplace to all traveled together. Just because it's we've all missed it for so long that he's actually somebody. I gotta hit out back channeled him. Because i'm trying to raise the next level of hackers and my daughter who's ten and her friend. The condition was they were able to go get the leftover halloween candy at their at my friend's daughters house. If they can get through the lock. I said cool. I'll teach guys lock picking. Because i've been speaking at conferences since two thousand fourteen and but i never really got was ever really serious about it like i do one here and there and it was a lot of it was because i was working in a consulting role. And it's good for you know when you're consultant especially it's good for your organization to have people out there speaking and i found right away the first time i did it like that was actually a lot of fun But then the more. I did it the more i started to realize like i just i i really you know. I've got a lot of ideas. I want to share and i love doing this because i've always been believe it or not. You know you you talk about me being out there and it's like i was very socially awkward like i was the person i go to a conference and be completely alone in a sea of thirty thousand people at defcon. Right which i mean. That's not unusual. People do that all the time but even smaller conferences like i was just never very good at starting conversations with people and so when i would speak it was a whole different world because you'll people would recognize you from having been on stage in an it. Stop you in the hall to ask you questions about what you talked about or whatever or just to thank you and it was such a great icebreaker because now i could get in. I could have conversations with people in the hallway about all this stuff that we were passionate about and we could. We could share ideas. And that's what conferences are all about to

Sea Hunt - It's Still Alive - Synthetic Hero
"It's time for another installment of seon. It's still alive and this time we're going back to season. Three episode twenty titled synthetic hero synthetic hero first aired on may twenty first nineteen sixty and we find might down in a caribbean harbor whereas working with a company. Dredging that harbor as mike is underwater scouting ahead of the dredge. He finds an uncharted wreck and discovers. That it's the navy. Ls number four to seven seven and s. t short for landing ship tank one of those ships that can push up onto the beach and offload equipment. I spent three years on t. Eleven ninety eight. The us bristol county in the late nineteen seventies. Well mike notifies the navy and meets with a captain sellers. Who tells mike that lsd four to seven seven went missing on september twelfth. Nineteen forty four. He also tells mike that eighteen crew members die. Two of the survivor's however jack clayton. Who was the captain and tom. Maury who clayton a hero saved might be interested in the finding captain. Sellers asked my to find out what happened before the dredging operators blow up the ship in the next scene mike walking down the pier carrying his doubles in one hand and the other equipment slung over his shoulder. One handed doubles. Wow there he meets the survivors. Jack clayton in tom. Worry along with jack's wife. Susan is it me or there are a lot of suzy's and susan's on john. Jack wants to dive with. Mike and tom will be on. Deck for support might convince the dredging operators to give him forty eight hours on the rack and try to find out what happened to l. s. t. four to seven as the scene shifts. We see jack getting into his gear. Mike i'm not so sure jack knows what he's doing. Jack says he's just a little rusty so the giants dryden and make their way to direct can split up. Mike little confused because jack doesn't seem to be all that incompetent in the water. Well they don't find anything and get back on the vote jackson's really agitated. They only have one more day to solve the mystery as the sun comes up the next day and they're back on the water. Mike is getting all geared up and ready to go. Clayton is fiddling around. Mike frustrated at the delay when suddenly clayton drops tanks over the side. And you see it's sinking to the bottom. Mike has no choice but to retrieve it and hoping that this is last delay and that the tank isn't a jinx on jack's back so now the two of them are back. Underwater jet goes to the bow area. And mike heads. Aft inside the engine room. And he finds a blast hole below the waterline as he exits the space with this newfound knowledge. Suddenly a nightmare of junk is falling on top of him. It could only have been shoved on top of him by one person jack. Clayton isn't a clumsy amateur. Mike frees himself and chases. After jack jack pulls knife and they get into a fight might prevails and takes jack back to the surface with a hammerlock back on the boat. We find out that. Jack wasn't trying to kill mike. Just trying to scare you. See jack confesses that it was all his fault that l. s. t. four to seven seven sank during the attack. It says he's he steered the ship into a reef where it sank and that the enemy didn't do it at all. Tom is very angry now. And they locked jack in the cabin while mike makes one more dive on the wreck. Mike is back in the engine room now and he finds something just then dynamite from dredge operators detonates and the ship starts to collapse on mike he stuck in his regulators damaged back topside jackass yelling to get out because might my need help. Tom refuses pleased. So jack breaks out of the cabin and gives tom a karate chop knocking him out. Jack johnson finds mike. "I am now joined by. Amanda dobbins our resident expert. Amanda thanks for joining me again. My pleasure your pleasure to watch these middle. Three episodes of the crown season four absolutely crushing. It this stuff. Is this really good. We're talking today about favorites fagin and taryn knowle's ands basically. It's the episode with all the kids. The episode with the guy breaks into the palace and the episode. Where charles and diana go to australia. And i have to say that i think four. I've seen a few people dating for here and there for some reason. Maybe because it's too too well kind of put too much of a bow on it. I think it's fucking extraordinary. Like if i i thought that favorites was a really like startling achievement in dramatic writing and just in terms of the amount of stuff that they burn through in the way that they bring all these characters. What did you. What did you think of that episode. I agree with you. And i have not seen any criticisms because i don't really consume social media anymore but anyone who thinks it's too neat or they put a bow on it. I guess find another show This is peter. Marin is a playwright. There is a lot of construction and intentional cinematic and exposition all dialogue and set pieces built into this. It's not. it's not that it's obvious but all of it is very crafted. So i agree with you that i thought episode four was tremendous in terms of the amount of like and setup that they managed to convey to you in a very effective way. Because we don't really know anything about two of the four children barely met any of them and has been kind of a side character and so there are four children who get their own scenes and moments and so you have to develop those characters. You have to develop the queen's relationship to all of them. You also have the margaret thatcher thematic connection of the of the children. And you're drying out a little bit about margaret thatcher's relationship to women as well which is an important larger thematic episode. And also you've got the falklands war. I mean it's and they do it definitely and i thought about something you say a lot. Which is the crown doesn't like doesn't waste a moment. They just pick the scenes they pick the lines. And you know everything you need to know. That is so hard and they nail it. I mean they do a lot of stuff that i think other shows would probably shy away from because it would feel too like they were showing you too many of their cards so i kept thinking about the scene between elizabeth and an you know they go riding out. This is the thing that they sort of both share this love of horses even though and is obviously phillips favorite. And that's like in the way that that gets conveyed in the beginning and their conversations heartbreaking you know like their conversation is legitimately breaking and i think you could look at what an says. She's like. I used to enjoy being the difficult on and scaring people and now i don't feel like have any control over that anymore and you could be like well like you might go your entire life and never have that level of self awareness. You know you may have to go through thirty years of therapy to find that out about yourself and this young woman just like sort of pops out off when confronted by her mother on iran day. But it's beautiful writing. It's just it's just like amazing writing. And i thought the performances specifically in that scene mostly because the three sons come off as absolute troll lords in this episode mean. Yeah but the scene in particular was was quite lovely thought. Listen i think that there are levels of emotional breakthrough and clarity in this. Show that it's never happened in real life and certainly have never happened in the uk and to anyone who is absolutely senior no country just a lot of time talking about salads in england too early because they get a lot of salad industry and how to their salads or just blue cheese and bacon their emotional relationships are blue cheese and bacon. Do they are not. They're not doing the the smart greens. Now i mean it's it's a tv show and we are projecting emotions and trying to figure out how these people felt about the facts that we know are true. That's what we think is so interesting about episode for which made me reflect a little bit of on the queen character in this season and an interesting thing is happening. We talked a little bit about this on the last episode. Where libya coleman is kind of popping out a little bit and coleman is one of the great actresses of time and also i find her personally hilarious so i think that that's great but i see moments where it nothing is on the page and it's just olivia colman giving it that sense of humor giving it that timing Or maybe even the character is being a little bit written to her strengths and that is also a little bit because the queen is not. i mean. she's not a side character but the way they're telling the story is about all of the other people and events who are kind of crowding into that character's life and how she's bouncing all of it but episode four is just it's about the queen and all of their writing it's character development that is in line with the past three seasons that we've seen and it's pretty extraordinary and i think libya coleman also does like a great job with the actual written script and the character and the reacting to like the horror show of her children. I mean they all are. Do you have a favorite of the four. Who is your favorite on the shore in real life. No on the show. I don't really i. It's shifted i think blassie's and it would have been charles and yeah and this season it's probably end. Although let me get to the end of it. I mean it's obviously not editor andrew. So yeah. I wanted to just quickly before we get into edward andrew charles. A little bit ask you you start this episode up. Did you expect the wedding. No if only because number one. I read some spoilers about how they don't show the wedding but i do also think in their when charles and diana yes yes. The most watched royal wedding. I think of all time. I i don't. I should have gotten this statistics. It was close to a billion people. Watch it. I mean that was everywhere and people taped it and watched it over and over again rate including me who. Dvr it when bbc america riera it before the wedding harry and meghan and it was part of their like twelve hour block of programming. I watched all of it i. It's pretty boring. They didn't really have their production values in one thousand nine hundred one that we expect from royal wedding now anyway but no. There was sort of finality to episode three and there was something intentional about the way they showed their rehearsal and kind of the real behind the scenes emotions where i was like. Okay this is an interesting choice and like this is what we're going to get and also i've seen it before was do because like they wouldn't be a lot of opportunity for people to be talking during that so unless there would be some fagin like wrinkle history that they wanted to explore not really sure what they would do their right. I mean it happened at such a scale that even it would defy the crown's siegi budget. I will say. I was surprised that diana disappeared for new episodes. We'll get episode five. But she is very briefly shown and she is heavily pregnant when she shown episode four. And she just won't come out of the room and in one way. That's really all you need to know. About how their marriage is going and how everything is you know how everything is is shaken out but on the other hand i was like uh this is a choice. Diana pretty popular. Yeah yeah no. I thought that the dow is interesting. Also the suggestion. That charles is starting to become under the influence of these gurus and like self help nutritionist. Which i didn't. I didn't know that about him. Oh yeah the the lawrence vander past reference. I only know about this from the tina brown book. But apparently he brought those books on their honeymoon and then tried to get diana who was twenty at the time of their wedding to read the books and discuss them over for dinner on their honeymoon. So that's how that went

'Mr. 80 Percent,' An Intimate Portrayal Of Surviving Prostate Cancer
"We're talking about prostate cancer why we don't talk about it because of issues like incontinence, impotence, men's private parts, and so forth I'm joined by Boston Globe Mark Shanahan who is out with a new podcast Mr Eighty percent, which tells the very personal story about his own prostate cancer and a warning again to listeners, we are talking a very frankly about this disease about sexual function and so on and so forth, and so this might not be suitable for younger listeners. We just want to put that warning out there. mark I want to talk a little bit about how this diagnosis it didn't just affect you affected your loved ones too. So your audio, your daughter Julia was in junior high when you were first diagnosed. So I want to hear a little bit of the two of you talking in episode one of Mr Eighty percent. I think I just took it to like. Like he actually died I would basically lose my best friend. This is my daughter Julia she's in college. Now they say like we're not your best friend like where your parents by. Having. Cancer means you get a preview of what your kid might say at your funeral. You're the funniest person I've ever met I. Think one of the most supportive and hardworking people I've ever met and. I also think you one of the most intense people I've ever met and you have a very impressive career, and so I always like looked up to that and by impressive you mean I have talked to Bj. Novak. You took me to Taylor concert. She gave me her bracelet, right? So. So that's a cut from Mr Eighty percent I'm here with Mr, with Shanahan and mark that's really touching moment. But say a little more about that because you make this, you spend a lot of time in this podcast talking about. The effect that this has on your entire family, and by the way the way your wife stepped up in heroic ways and supported you and this is a huge theme about in this story. It's true Anthony that You know you just can't anticipate something like this and and again it's the nature of this disease that you know. This was something that as my surgeon says, at some point in the podcast, you know when you're when you're treating. Prostate cancer patient, you're really treating the couple. And So Michelle had a heavy lift Michelle, your wife correct. I should say right Michelle. My Wife. And she was Extraordinary and But so it's a learning process. For she and then in terms of our children. You well, I Beckett we would like to get back into the podcast but your son as fifty s fifteen year old boy now and You know we wanted him to say, well, we're going to have to talk about our penises and that was. He he just wasn't willing to go there. So again, it's it is. You know we say in the podcast that you get the cancer but everybody's life changes and you know I I don't think that unless you go through something like this, you can really appreciate what that means but I. Certainly do i WanNa talk a little bit about Get get you to talk a little bit about the course of treatment that you opted to follow. So so walk us through first of all the options that you had to consider. When you were first diagnosed well. So we want to also say that because prostate cancer. So slow growing and because many men who are diagnosed are much older I think that people should think very very carefully before embarking on any treatment that there is something called active surveillance, which means we watch it we pay attention to it. And but but. For Myself I was young I had two kids. I had forty years may be to live and. I had a gleason score, which is a score after they give you your biopsy and take a look at what's happening they grade basically of the severity of the intensity of your cancer in mind was seven. Out of ten that's considered to be intermediate I guess you know the options for me were to watch it to have surgery. Or to a radiate my prostate and. In, the end there have been enormous advances in the treatment of prostate cancer over just thirty years. If I had gotten prostate cancer fifty years ago. I. would be rough rough rough. And not just for me every man who had a prostatectomy which is surgical procedure to remove your prostate. before nine, hundred, eighty, two, left the hospital impotent every single Guy which is just incredible to me because nineteen eighty two is not that long ago. Right, it is incredible. So you went for the surgery but I did but that wasn't the end of your ordeal surgery. It turns out we learned didn't get all the cancer. So you had to go back and sign up for pretty radical course of hormone therapy, and this is really the most excruciating part of your journey to read into here about you describe it essentially as a kind of. Chemical. Castration. Well. Indeed and I don't just describe it that way. That's in fact what it is It removes the testosterone from your body and the reason that we do that is because it's the thing that feeds the cancer prostate cancer. Grows Thanks to to Saas thrown. So if you removed from your body to cells cancer cells week in some cases they die and then when they're at their weakest blast them with radiation. The problem is that when you take a testosterone out of a man's body it is a as you say excruciating I became a different person. ahead you know the the euphemism is mood swings. I didn't have mood swings had a I had tantrums and I will say that I was on the phone this morning, the guy who listened to the first three episodes of the podcast and. He. said, he'd never talked to anybody about his course blueprint and he was arrested he actually got arrested. Because a parking garage. because. He could he he got completely out of control. So it's scary. And and you know now as I sit here. There's you know at this surgery if if the prostate cancer should return, there is no surgery there is no radiation. Those are no longer alternatives. and. The prospect of more loop ron or any kind of hormone therapy is really terrifying

Give Up Control, On Purpose
"One of the misconceptions that I had about this show when I started this podcast five years ago. was that every episode needed to be better than the last? And this was a misperception misconduct option of what this audience needs out of this podcast for a couple of reasons. The first reason is very simple. How do you decide? between two episodes, which one is the best. The easy answer might actually be substitution question. Which, episode, has more listens. Or? Perhaps the heuristic were this substitution that we make is which episode has the best feedback. Which episode is mentioned in reviews the most or which episode has the most chatter on twitter. All of these are just proxies to quality. And there's no specific way to determine. What episodes are? Unequivocally. Better than others. Of course, that's not to say that all episodes are then therefore equal to each other their episodes that I feel. Much more proud of over time but the perception, the confusion that I had was that my pride or my feeling of. Investment or my feeling of quality my perception of quality of the episodes were going to match up with everyone else's. My perception was that I needed to increase control and investment in every episode. But the truth was that I needed to like go of control. And invest less in the episodes not because I didn't WANNA put more of my energy and time. Into caring for the episodes but rather. that. If I tried to be a perfectionist about these episodes, then we wouldn't be able to publish this show on as regular basis. And the interesting factor here. Is that some of the episodes where I felt. Rushed or even. Like the idea for the episode, the premise of the episode wasn't very good. Some of those episodes I actually received very good feedback. You could argue based on those heuristic we talked about at the beginning. But some of those were my best episodes. So, why am I telling you all of this? How does it matter to your career as a software engineer? First of all I do want to mention the fact that this isn't true across the board. Not, every podcast is optimized for delivering two or three episodes a week like this one is. But I wanNA talk about a specific measure. That most suffering engineers will relate to especially as your career moves forward. And that is control. In. One of many things that we often have a confusion about. Perception that could be flipped on its head and many of us would. Benefit from that flipping. Our natural perception most of us at least. That as we gain more control things will improve. As as we have more influence. As. We have more say over whatever is happening. As. We have more information and more power. Things will improve. Our ability to our lives in a positive. Or our ability to affect other people's lives in a positive direction will increase as we gain more control. But time and time. Again, this shows to not be true. And, probably, for a few reasons, one of the first reasons that comes to mind is the fact that most control his actually an illusion. We aren't increasing our own agency most of the time. Instead, we are borrowing agency from someone else or something else. Or we're allowing ourselves to believe that we have more control than we actually have. Now how does this play out well? As an example, you may eventually become a manager in your career and you might find yourself excited to dive into the statistics of your team's performance. An as you open up those statistics for discussion and as you drive the team towards improving those statistics, it may feel very rewarding to see those numbers change. But there's so many problems that tend to happen when we manage purely by the numbers, this is only one example of how control can be an illusion. In this example, managing by the numbers creates very clear. Problems with those numbers if you have incentives to make a given number move in a particular direction. Then it's very likely that you're trading something else off or. You may unknowingly be creating a false measure, some kind of gamified measure. and. So this idea that we're controlling things more that were able to take those numbers and move them in the right direction by imposing our powerful position, for example. On other people that that is somehow a controlling measure. It turns out to move us in the other direction. We get a picture of things that isn't clear. And this isn't a new problem. This isn't a problem that has come up since. We started measuring things measuring performance with data. This isn't new it's not a modern problem. In fact, many philosophers talk about the idea that control is in some ways. The source of suffering for many people.

Going along for the ride with us, totally, it's nice to know you're all out. Yeah, yeah, it really is a really. It really is like I I imagine. If we did not make this podcast, I would feel much more alone and. Isolated and so a really appreciate I agree. How's it going over there? Cat. Never called you unless. It's going okay. I I realized I'm. Getting into this mode I, think especially now that I'm so focused on working on my book that. Like, I'll be like. Oh, it's the late afternoon. I have not like I have not even been outside today. So today I was like okay I must go on a walk. Get forced myself to go on a walk. Just to? Be Able to be outside and those really nice out today. But you have the hours just like slip away. Time feel so meaningless it really. Really does. Are Are you still like motivated to put on regular clothes every day. So the answer to that is no, however I did. Put on regular clothes yesterday, which is like. A day when we recorded a lot of podcast stuff, even though we weren't GonNa, see each other. I love your clothes, and I even splits on some purview. Actually Oh, wait I'm sorry who is I, know I meant to tell you? I forgot to tell you I'm telling you now. A! Is when it's not like likings and like pajamas and like sweat type outings. It is these short universal thread shorts. I bought at target last year. Some sort of like Tankeea toppy thing I, guess you could also just call that a tank top and. Taking top. Kreis. But you know like sometimes. It's a loose shirt. We're GONNA. Be Talking some clone worst all right now. No, I love I love the clone. Thanks for having me back I. Don't mind talking about star. Wars at all. I'm definitely the Star Wars Guy at the store I've got a big old tie fighter sitting on the sitting on one of the shelves, and Yeah I love Star Wars up and down left and right but i. do know other things. SO YEAH CLONE WARS! I know when we talked in the past. You're really excited before the final seat. Well I guess, maybe it's going to be the final season of clone wars, but the new one was coming out, and of course by the time you hear this, it's done so I, will let the listener know that there will be spoilers. It's been long enough. I think, and it can goes to the dark side, you guys. I didn't tell him. It's like saying the titanic. Sinks at the end of the move. It does I my dad still loves that movie and He loved the Titanic before the movie came out, but every the movie's been on TV lot lately, and he keeps watching it, and I was like you've seen the movie. I know it's real long. The boat saying. There there we segue into. That anikin goes bad. Anikin goes bad the and thanks for listening you guys. All, right. But I know you loved the series. Mainly a Soka I would say is probably your best most favorite character. You think, man. She's up there and honestly My love really lies with rebels. But I honestly believe my love for rebels wouldn't exist without clone wars, and I think that clone wars an epic. Very much stands on its own It is so grand like even rebels is like four. Seasons. Whereas clone wars we've got. what is it seven seasons and a move at two thousand eight the I? Did you watch it when it first came out or did you catch a little later? I caught the movie win. It came out on DVD. Because they released the first three episodes as a feature, and if you go on like Disney, plus and you watch season one episode one. That's not worth starts. You have to go on Disney, plus specifically I'm going to go ahead and date this podcast right now around. This is not gonNA work in ten years when Disney pluses and the thing anymore but if you go into Disney plus and go under specials. Specials they have star wars. The clone wars. It's like an eighty six minute movie or something, and that actually comes before season one episode one that was released in theaters and Samuel. Jackson is Mace Christopher Lee is count Duku and I think there might be a third like original voice. Okay? I can't remember off the top of my head, but it's interesting because with clone wars being as long as it is. Tom Cain to me is Yoda so in rebels? They bring in Frank Oz to do Yoda's voice in that in. It's really cool that they got Frank Oz. But seeing a Yoda in that style that CG style sounding not like Tom Kaine like weirdly sounded wrong, and it's the original. Yoda and I might be alone in this, but I just just to have. The the iota that I'd heard 'cause I mean. I haven't counted it, but I have to assume Tom kaine probably has more recorded lines as Yoda than than Frank. Oz does so yeah I guarantee you. He does and especially in that visual style, but that's kind of carried. I know rebels in clone wars aren't exactly the stay the same, but stylistically there's a there's a theme that goes that over rice all of them so. It was just weird rebels to hear Yoda with the original voice, but kind of wanting it to be the voice from Clone Wars I. think that's an interesting legacy in and of itself, that is if a soak is maybe not your favorite I guess, could you let us know maybe your top two favorite characters from condo and I'm sorry. Let me finish. I'm sorry. Honda. Is Is my favorite character and he carries over into rebels. And even there's even a series of kids books, and there's one that's about Hanin chewy with the foul can, and they They have to team up with with Honda I. CAn't remember the name of it off the top of my head, but the audio book is narrated by By, the guy who does voice, who's also Winnie the Pooh and lost Jim Cummings okay.
