Restaurant serves American comfort food and 'barbecue diplomacy' in Mexico City

"It's August, which means young people across the country are getting ready to go to college. Maybe take some classes. Join a club may be a fraternity happened to be that was not an accident. What happened to Tim Piazza was an inevitability but in Pennsylvania, several current and former students are facing charges in the hazing death of nineteen year old pledge, Tim Piazza at Penn State. Last spring, falling headfirst down the stairs of the beta Theta pi fraternity house during alleged alcohol, fueled hazing, ritual people waited twelve hours before calling. Nine one one prosecutors say that fraternity brothers waited to get beyond the help in an attempt to cover up their drinking and coordinate a story twenty-six. People were accused only one has pleaded guilty. That was twenty one year old, Ryan Burke. He admitted to four counts of hazing, five counts involving alcohol. And yesterday a judge decided Burke deserved, no jail time. ABC's GIO. Benitez has been covering this case. He's here with me. Now geo your team talked to the parents of the victim. How are they taking this? Well, right now the father says, he's numb. I think it's really the first step in in in getting Justice for the killing over son, and he sort of trying to process everything the mother saying, you know what? That she really feels that this could be a deterrent to other people. That's really what it needs to be. Future fraternity members, organization members, they, they need to know that there will be consequences if you haze serious consequences. She really thinks that even though there's no jail time involved here, you're talking about a kid who has to spend three months under house. Arrest has to pay three thousand dollars in fines has to spend twenty seven months on probation, a hundred hours community service and no doubt this is going to be on his record. And so does it send a message though? Because I mean, a kid is dead because of hazing that's not in dispute, right that that's a fact and yet no jail time. Like what was the decision for the judge here will in this case we're talking about a misdemeanor. That's what hazing is a misdemeanor in this case. And that's why the judge decided not to sentence him to any jail time, but the prosecutors were looking because someone died because Tim Piazza is not on this earth anymore. They wanted to get him for ninety days in jail. And this is not the only person being prosecuted for this. There are dozens of people allegedly involved in this incident. So this sentence, what does it mean for these other students? Yes. So we have now twenty five other former frat members who are also accused in this and now some legal experts. Wonder if these other young men will plead guilty to because they see, wait a minute. We're not gonna get any jail time, and this does set precedent. And all this happening is freshman get ready for their first day of college and their first day of pledge week. Thank you. Thank you. And one last thing too many Texans Mexican food is comfort food. You grow up with it, the eat it all the time. It's part of the culture will in Mexico City. There's a restaurant serving comfort food to people who feel American. The food is barbecue, and some of those people were deported I knew since I got here that there was no barbecue in Mexico City. That's Dan to foster on the corner of pinch Gringo barbecue. He's originally from the US but walk around his restaurant and you'll meet guys like who go Hernandez. When I got the port, the I came back from Mexico City and the I was looking for a for a place to work Hernandez, came to the US illegally and lived here for about a decade. A one night. He was arrested for DUI and was sent back to Mexico. I was lust. I had no hopes that nothing to to hold onto, and he didn't know one thing he knew barbecue food Pernet is is now the kitchen manager and slowly Fosse found out a lot of his best staffers were deportees. They understand more what we do. And they have a home that they feel familiar and a month and a half ago. He says he interviewed a guy who'd been in the US thirty years with the family and got sent to Mexico after running a red light. When I was hearing this story, I got emotional. I started crying and he says, in a time of tension between the countries what we've done in the last four and a half years is position ourselves as the Cultural Representative for the United States here in the city, but is brisket isn't just barbecue diplomacy for growing group in Mexico. It's a slice of home. Paul. Now I'm hungry, not cool guys. Hey, remember if you're listening and you're liking this, leave us a rating and review on apple podcast. There are now more job openings in the US than workers to fill them

"Much. And let's come home for a second. Because while North Korea will have profound implications for national security for geopolitics, there are issues that might feel a little more pressing jobs, jobs, jobs, President Trump, said jobs would be his chief concern and that he'd institute massive tax cuts and sweeping immigration reforms to get them will last week, the Labor Department announced just how good the job market has become over the last ten years. For the first time, there are more job openings in this country than there are jobless Americans to fill them as in. You want a job. You got one, if and it's a big if you match up with the jobs that are out there. So as students leave school and has other Americans try to better their lives. The question is, what is the future of the job market in this country, Rebecca Jarvis ABC's chief business and economics correspondent Rebecca. What does this number tell us? We'll six point seven million job openings. This is a massive number of opportunities. What you have to think about when you look behind that number is where are the opportunities? Some of it is location based the midwest in the west or some of the strongest places for job openings. And the other component is which jobs, professional jobs, architecture jobs, engineers, trucking, there is a massive demand in the United States for truckers right now. I, I spoke to a woman last week who runs a trucking company in Minnesota. She hiked wages, fifteen percent this year and still can't find enough drivers to take these jobs which pay in the range of eighty thousand dollars a year. So so the question for young people who say, leaving college remained, what field are you actually trying to get in because that might not match up with where the market set? Yes in well, right now, if you look at the jobs report, the latest jobs report, it showed job creation in really across the board manufacturing construction, retail food, service, health care. One of the issues for young people in particular, if you're. Graduating and looking for a job a summer job. For example, one of the issues is that people are working until they're older, and they're also retirees who are coming back into the jobs market taking, for example, those retail and food service jobs, which we traditionally think of as the summer jobs, in fact, food service in the nineteen nineties. It used to be that one in four of those jobs was covered by a teen today. It's one in six of those jobs by teen retail, same thing the number of teens is dwindling, whereas the number of older workers in that field is rising. From the employer side, employers are looking at people right now. What do they see when they see these numbers that there's an open job for every unemployed person out there? Well, it's an interesting dynamic because on the one hand, they're realizing we might have to increase wages in order to fill the seat. They they're complaining frankly that they can't find the people. They want our workers coming in. They want more people coming in the door for interviews, so then they can have their pick of the highest quality and what's happening is that they're starting to see, wait a minute, who's why is no one applying on the job boards wire people aggressively, like what we saw a couple of years ago aggressively pursuing these jobs. So a lot of employers, the hope for McConnell is that employers will say, oh, wait a minute. You know what would actually get more people interested in this job, a ten percent wage increase, no chance that happens. We'll know there's definitely a chance. There's there's a good probability actually, historically spee. Leaking, but it should have already happened. How did we even get here by the way? I mean, we had this great recession, not that long ago. How are we in this position now? What is the demands of the top flight job providers? The ones that are going to pay top dollar have changed somewhat in that if you're young and you're just coming out of high school or college, you might decide rather than taking an entry level job, you would prefer to pursue more education or community service to Padua resume and hopes of attracting one of these top hiring cubs, especially since there's a forty year old taking your job at the burger flipping joint. Exactly. That is ABC Rebecca, Jarvis. Thanks, Rebecca. Thanks. And one last thing she raised her for eighteen years. We'll untried a woman was sentenced to eighteen years in prison because the little girl she raised wasn't her daughter. She was a kidnapping victim almost twenty years ago. Gloria Williams walked into a hospital dressed as a nurse and walked away with a baby. She named her Alexis. But when Alexis became one of those teenagers looking for their first job, there was something wrong with her. I d a DNA test at a police precinct confirmed that her birth mother was actually Shinora. Mobely think when you left the police station that she was going to be fine and things get back to normal. I'm new. This weekend ABC's Eva pilgrim's spoke exclusively to combine a mobile that was her name at birth, and that is what she goes by now. But think about this for Kemira Gloria Williams was the only mom she ever knew if your parents are who raised you, does that change when they stole you to you? You still consider your mother still do and still she kind of treats you like her daughter? Oh yes. She call Steele gets on meet. Yes, yes. Now, Gloria Williams is behind bars. Camara has asked the judge for leniency and her birth. Parents say they've got their baby girl back who they are. Finally, getting to know. Okay. "Siberia. He might not be able to hear through the wind. That is a guy in fur-lined coat in the middle of nowhere saying, we might lose people. ABC's Patrick reveal is our Russia correspondent. He's insane Petersburg right now, Patrick you accompanied Alenia on this race. What are we talking about here? What is it like on that frozen lake in Siberia. This is not just any lay. This is the the deepest lake in the world, and so it is. It is just I, if you just imagine of endless white flat plateau and around is overeating with these mountains, have blue haze over them, then that's what you look. If you imagine the frozen planet. That's why she's running this. Martin is a cross lychee across the ice running on top of Mita thick ice from one show to the twenty six miles doing. I think that's that's can be telling Dan bridges are damn degrees. Integrate lower than usual. Minus minus twenty Fahrenheit was was the temperature when we were that. And suddenly this gale blew up and we had fifty five mile an hour winds. When you combine that with minus twenty temperatures, you get this ferocious cold and people getting frost by the two people who had to be pulled out the race because they got frostbite and just off Gina, the I five miles one guy had had had his ear. Frostbitten and wish then had to be potty cut off. The ear had to be cut off, not not the whole era. As far as I understand that part of the. I mean, I had this very rough, rough guy from Siberia who said to me in Siberia, we cool old doctors sessions. So obviously a special breed of person who's doing this race. You guys were with LIC, but you met several these people. What are they like? What is she like? How do you get yourself to do this? I mean, the thing that struck me is that there is a great variety of of people doing it and many of them particular also above middle-age in many of them like Elissa in the late fifties and she she has self is sixty full when we began. You know, she was running through knee deep snow and it looked very tough. And she said to me, ten me is that this is horrible. You know, this is awful, but then she just keeps going and it's speeds stays the same. And she just goes on just keeps going. Moving to Nevis in stays an, you know, whatever you do keep moving onto the finish. It's absolutely insane documented. Just went up this morning on ABC news dot com. We're glad you made that a Siberian safely. Patrick. Thanks for being with us. Thanks. Thanks. And one last thing you've heard of ghosting you go on dates, then all of a sudden nothing Connors, never gonna call. Really. Have you know, because I'm a guy and it's just how we do it. Well, what if that happens? But you still see the person liking your Facebook posts, like what does that mean? They weren't text you back, but they'll like a photo or watcher, Instagram story, not chat story, so they're alive and they know your life and I know what you're doing, but they're not actually contacting you. That is Anna arose Vini. She wrote on the excellently named blog, man, repel. This has happened to her and her friends multiple times, hey, why are you watching my snapshot stories been not texting me and he was like, oh, you can see that even coin to term for it. It's not ghosting. It's not creeping I admit that I creep, so I do want to distinguish two. She calls it orbiting you know, just keeping someone in your orbit. I Vini says, is the modern version of keeping someone of the back burner. Let them know you're there just in case things change, but for now you're not interested. I think it's the action of someone who doesn't know what they want. She says, think about it. Ghosting has existed ever since the invention of letters, you cannot orbit without social media.
