"So I really think that really is what we key in on and we've seen a lot of that on the showroom floor, John, you might expand on that. Yeah, and I just say a couple of things is that I can tell you that almost none of our new partners that come to us are now offering a voice solution for the first time. Many of them have tried other platforms. They've done deployments, but they've gotten to the point where they are wanting scale. They need a platform that's easy to manage, that scales with them are the largest provider has about a half million users on our platform. So something that can go from a small offer to very large. And they also want to know that they're working with the company that's got to kind of grown in the cloud technology and platform. And so we just celebrated a few months ago. The 20th anniversary of kind of the birth of our technology, our UK has platform. So if you think about having a born in the cloud platform that is that old that in maturity, from a maturity perspective, not from an age perspective, but maturity and capabilities. And then a company that's really focused around independent partners in an independent channel community and that's been true to that commitment. That's very appealing to a lot of the potential licensees that we talk to. So it seems like this conversation is running on two tracks, right? That if I'm an MSP, I need a partner that is financially secure and reliable. But I also need a partner that is going to help me continue to keep my portfolio fresh. Yes, and we give them great APIs to where if they want to do their own unique development or build tools or other things to help manage themselves or just use a lot of off the shelf, the specialization tools that allows them to we have one capability that allows our partners to integrate into over 300 different business applications.

"And that's what, you know, what's great is we have very large providers that are on our platform and we have entrepreneurial MSPs like you just mentioned that have power in their ucas based on our offer and I always say our platform is powerful. But it's simple to manage and it's easy to use, and that's what helps them be very successful. Now, you also have an omnichannel sea cast offering. Yes. Yeah, we've released, you know, if you look at the two things to challenges that most companies are dealing with, it's employee experience, how do I keep my employees, whether they're in the office or remote engaged, right? Give them the tools they need to do their business well, and that's where in the UK's area we do things like integrating into teams, integrating into a lot of vertical specific CRMs. But then the second thing is customer experience. Younger consumers, if you look at surveys, their experience with the brand is many times more important than the product itself. So we have released an omnichannel contact center as a service offer late last year. It's going great. People love it. And so what it allows is really, however, my customer wants to reach out to me through whatever, whether it's through social media, SMS, email, whatever it is, it gives an agent, incredible tools that they can use to be able to deliver that great customer experience to companies. And so we're excited to be layering that now on top of our ucas platforms. So it's an integrated UK and seacat solution. Now, has that resonated here this week at this conference with the MSPs and channel partners and whatnot. It really has. And I think it's one of our differentiators because you can see cast have typically been two separate offerings. And so we're one of the few out there on the floor today that has one offering that has you pass and see cast and on the general capabilities all built into the same platform. So our go to market strategy is really different from a lot of our competitors and the fact that you don't have to keep other pieces together now. It's all inclusive with crescendos offering. So that's really attractive, right? They just become there and it's all there. It's all there. Now, let's go a little bit. Let's dive a little bit deeper into that. If you partner up with crescendo, in addition to the technology, are there other support systems there for you? Yeah, we have one in our go to market strategy, companies can choose various ways to partner with us. So we have an agent type of program. We have quite a few of our partners that have white label programs, so they provide a whole support rapper around helping companies that are smaller and can't make the investment in their own platform, kind of build a white label offer under their brand. And then when companies are big enough or when they're ready to make a little bit commitment, they can make an investment in our platform and either there's two ways we do it.

"This is dark green on the publisher of telecom reseller, and we are at MSP expo IT expo in Fort Lauderdale, and I have with me John Britain, who is the chief revenue officer for crescendo Jonathan thank you for joining me today. Great to be here, Doug. And also with me, Ted gambler, who's the president and COO of crescendo. Thank you for joining me today. Thanks, Ed. And join me here. Well, thank you for taking some time out for a very busy afternoon here at ITX boat. Tip of the hall and all the sessions that are going on. We're going to be talking about some really interesting developments since last year with crescendo. But first, what is crescendo? Yes, a Crescent that was a true unified communication provider of not only a platform but a direct solution that really encompasses a lot of different as a service type offering. So in fact, communications as a service cloud communication to the service and contact center as a service. And we have customer experience and we have infrastructure as a service. So we're offering our platform, not only for licenses to be able to resell it, but we can also offer it on an infrastructure as a service offering as well. So if you remember Doug, we merged about a year and a half ago with savings and a lot of people know the net sapiens platform. The great thing I love and about an event like this is we have over 200 companies that have built their own UK on our offer in a lot of them are here as exhibitors that IT expo with their own spin or specific go to market or the strategies they use to deploy our technology. So we're kind of the Intel inside for ucas. And then we do have an offer that's our own that's available to customers as well. And that platform grew 50%. And one year, we're growing a lot. Yeah, we've run from 1.7 million users on our platform when we acquired it safely until it required its sapiens in July of 2021, and we just announced last week that we have eclipsed the 3 million user marks. So that's almost double angle 1.7 to 3 million. So almost double in a little bit over a year and a half. Why the success? Yeah, I think it's a couple of things. One, our platform is fantastic. Supporting that many end users, you've got to have a very reliable, very feature rich platform. I think our go to market model of Sessions, not seats, is a very affordable model compared to most of the other competitors that are charging a pursuit license base. So when we look at how we position the product, great product, great margins for our licensees out there, and very feature rich offerings so they can take this and turn it up tomorrow. So when we talk about our infrastructure as a service, the barriers to entry for having your own platform have really gone away because with infrastructure as a service, so we can turn up an instance on our platform tomorrow and start working as their own. So that's a huge opportunity for MSB. Yeah, absolutely. And that's what I was going to add to that is that what I love is when you look at how our technology, our partners take it and they all have a passion. They've got their unique use cases. They've got the verticals, maybe they go after and by them taking us as kind of the ingredient brand in their unified communications offer. And then putting, taking our APIs, building their own custom type of things for different verticals and things that they do. They're growing at more than double the rate of the market.

"Et cetera, don't ship things that they don't need or don't take too long doing it or don't go off track and there's a whole load of anti patterns probably in how you would want to run a project. Project being counseled or big epic rest here in the middle, all those types of things. And so we over the years reflect a lot as I'm sure many teams do, like do not kind of retrospective as well. So I was part of it. Yeah, exactly what the writer all day. These are things that work well, the student at the end of any project, or even sometimes part way through a project. And just over the course of years of doing this, patterns repeated repeated repeated. And we said, okay, let's not do this again. And then have a retro to learn the same thing. We've already learned 5 times. Let's actually try and write it down. And then we kind of stumble upon principles, I think, as the best way to do that. Let's maybe so that we can ground our listeners. Let's talk through a couple of principles and we'll kind of go back to the kind of the worthwhile, et cetera. What are our principles for how we build product? Yeah, so we have three top level product principles. We actually have a bit of a system with three top level product principles. There are things that we care about the most, I think. The R and D team is actually added a fourth principle since this was recorded. We're constantly evolving and reevaluating our principles. Anyway, back to Paul. Then we have 5 design principles that are specific to the design team and the discipline of design. And then we 5 engineering principles and specific to the discipline of engineering. So we have 13 in effect in practice, any individual only has to observe 8. Everyone inherits the top tree, and then if you're an engineer, you've got 5 engineering principles on top. Yeah, okay. Yeah. And that's true. And 13 to 7 at the bottom. But you hope that any team in the company is familiar with all the principles. I mean, 13, you don't have to remember recite 13 principles. But in practice, you should actually get into that particular behavior. In practice, you should see people and acting these principles. So for example, let me go through some of our product principles, like three at the top level. One of them is start with the problem. So this is, again, a principle that came from us realizing that we oftentimes weren't starting with a problem. Instead, we were starting with some cool idea we had or some kind of fictionalized hypothetical customer wouldn't it be cool if I talked to one customer and I think and I think everyone certainly extrapolate out to thousands of people. And the kind of reasons principle exists is because we believe that any solution that we ship is only ever as good as the problem understanding. Yeah. So it's a bad idea to understand the problem, the better thing you'll desire. Is that Einstein isn't a problem like well state is bomb household. Exactly. So we spent a ton of ton of time on problem definition. Problem prioritization, first of all, is this an important problem? Do we understand this problem? Okay, now we even saw this problem a bit better. That's like restock it against the other problems that we think people could understanding of. I like to speak to her so a problem like a shit version of this would be like the problem is we need ticketing. At this point, or we didn't have these principles would be, you know, there might be a design review or product review in a project. And a leader typically would come in some leading leading the team. And you and me, we've both experienced this different times coming in and I've seen work and we started asking questions like if we show customers what did they say? Did they react well to they just can they articulate what problem this is solving for them as solving a real problem or is it like hypothesized or and then it was really specific examples of how this would actually change how they work, et cetera, et cetera and oftentimes what we find is understanding of the customer problem or trying to solve is really ambiguous and vague and loose when as a result and the project is like the biggest vague and loose and it gets pulled in all different directions. What you end up with is people disagreeing with each other very opinion driven rather than kind of evidence driven. As opposed to a project where we spent a ton of time with phones understanding the problem and then downstream from that when you come into a design review or product review and start asking these questions, you also have a way richer better answers because we actually spent the time talking about my brother. Our order to our think big start small and shipped to learn rather than kind of walk through both of those as well. I think one important point we should stop on reflect on here is something I really believed all the time. Most of the time when I see companies decide they want to build out some principles or they end up basically saying stuff that is just generally true. Ship puts off our ship goods offer design matters or focus on the user or whatever. And what they don't really do in my opinion is come up with a principle that's pointy enough such doctors and equal and counter principle in a sense. I think that's an asset test that we've always had for principles. So if we take, say, well, you can pay ten picks at smaller ship to learn. What's the opposite principle and when would that be good? Yeah. Yeah, this is actually really important points because like you said, I've often talked to people about principles and other companies and their principles and values do by extension. We should talk with the destination there, potentially, but ten feet truisms. You never disagree with that. So think big starts well, it's a great example where the kind of basic citizen principle is kind of self explanatory. When people start working on a project. And by the way, these principles are in order. So let's start with the problem. Then think big start small, then shift to learn, right, gotcha. So you've started with the problem. You have a deeper understanding of the problem. And then the next stage is, okay, think big. What's that big dream, the vision? What's the concept design for this solving this problem? So think big and don't be limited by any kind of constraints. And then start small. And take the big idea, take that bigger vision, the longer term plan, or dream, and then start small, break it down into smaller, smaller pieces, and keep scoping back, back, back, back, back, until you have kind of smaller coherent solution. And so that's how we want people to work. And the biggest piece of feedback we get within this principle is how small or small and we push for very, very small. So the opposite of this, principle, is also valid, which will be like, thanks mall, start big. That is a valid principle, too. What would that look like? For things small start big, like I imagine any company who's working on infrastructure, for example. So imagine you're an electricity company, or even renewable energy company, that

"Going back to the Dropbox example, where you look at slack, you look at a bunch of these, you know, the thing that's really nice is that you have a natural network formation that sort of happens. And then every user has the opportunity to then acquire one of their coworkers, and you can analyze it even more. The products that, for example, are like DocuSign, where folks that are collaborating within a workflow, you involve people from across companies. That's going to be naturally even more viral than something that just exists within a company. How many folks have discovered intercom because they see the little thing on the bottom right and have a conversation with someone and they happen to have a business that encounters a lot of this stuff. Exactly. And they're like, oh, I want that too, right? And so you get all this free, really interesting acquisition that comes from that. I think when I look at some of the high profile cases, that didn't work, there's a couple things that I think work in concert to make them more difficult. The first is you have an acquisition model that is kind of a single channel, right? Maybe that's Facebook ads, maybe that's the Google ads, maybe it's SEO, maybe it's one of these things. But you especially don't have any natural virality, natural kind of network, kind of thing in there. So I think that's one thing. The second is that, especially when we're talking about keep beating up on ecommerce, I think one of the things that ecommerce is that oftentimes if you're buying something like a mattress or you're buying something that's like a car, this is something that only happens. If it's a one decade purchase, exactly. And so because of that, you end up in this whole acquisition treadmill where you got to run really, really, really fast. While this whole thing is going, and then by the way, if you're on a single point of failure on your acquisition channel, then a lot of times these acquisition channels are a little bit like this arbitrage that kind of exists for a period of time. And if you hit it at exactly the right period of time, you can build a pretty decent company, but then eventually you should just plan on losing it. This whole thing is also another reason why a lot of games companies are hard to fund from a venture perspective because there's built in natural churn, right? Dating apps are also like this built in natural turn. If you do. Then you don't like your user. Exactly. That's right. So you have that combined with, again, this desire that you have to actually buy the traffic because it's very hard in a dating app to be like, oh, you should download this too, like that kind of doesn't make sense. So I think this is the kind of thing to watch out for, especially if you're building something that is in FinTech, in particular, like personal finance, right? Things like healthcare, right? These are all things that you have to be very careful about and make sure that you understand how those dynamics are going to play out long term. Andrew Chan there. Andrew has been on the show twice, so you can continue listening to that conversation or a more recent chat he had with Dez trainer last year. Both episodes are linked in the show notes. So now we come to our final part of today's special 3 million downloads episode. We end with the voice the show started with all those years ago, intercom cofounder Dez trainer. He was joined now by chief product officer, Paul Adams, to talk about our product principles. We use product principles a lot in intercom to guide us in terms of how we build what we build and how we make decisions. And this conversation really struck a chord with listeners. Here's Dez. Paul, let's start at the top. What the hell do we mean when we say principal? Yep, that's a good place to start. So a principle is a fundamental truth or proposition that serves as the foundation for behavior that gets you the results you want. That's red straight out of websites I guess. Can you give me some to the dictionary definition? Give me a bit more grounded there. So what that means is it's about predictable behavior and future basically. So we're big into principles as you know. And the reason we got big and principles is because they're a way of encoding your mistakes and successes. Right. So any business anywhere obviously wants to repeat their successes and avoid repeating their mistakes, which is easy to say and hard to do. But how to do institutionally and organizationally for sure. So principles is our way or the best way we've found in which to hold file the mistakes. Codifying what's next sounds like we're going to guarantee that we locked him in. Can you explain a bit on so let's say we found, hey, tree project all went off course because of blah. Do we then is there a principle to be found enough or is it like, hey, if this is a consistent pattern that we need to make sure no one ever repeats would have a principle about the positive behavior that we want. Is that what you mean? Basically, there's lots of maybe it's useful to actually share some examples of talking about this in the abstract, but it's basically about having a predictable system. Obviously our goal, like any product team, any product engineering team is ship great software that customers love, value use,
