What Is Pi?
"Come to brain stuff. A production of iheartradio rain stuff lauren. Bo-bottle here the number referred to as pie has mesmerized mathematicians for four thousand years. It's the rarest of back medical constance and unfailingly accurate ratio. That's also never ending. The digits of Pi have been calculated out more than twenty two trillion decimal places without ever repeating a. That makes it an irrational number. The definition of Pie simple. It's the ratio of a circle circumference. That is the length around the circle divided by its diameter or at the links across the circle. But what's remarkable? Is that no matter. The size of the circle you're measuring that ratio of circumference diameter will always equal three point. One four one five nine two six five three five eight nine seven et cetera usually shortened to three point one four divide the circumference of a tennis ball by its diameter. And you get three point one four divide the circumference of the planet Mars by its diameter. And you get three point one four divide the circumference of the known universe by its diameter. You get the point. Pie is critical to several basic calculations geometry physics and engineering including the area of a circle which is Pie Times Square of the radius and volume of a cylinder which has pyre squared times the height of the cylinder when ancient Babylonian attempted to measure the precise area of circles back in one thousand nine hundred BC. They signed a value to pie. A three point one to five. The ancient Egyptians came up with three point one six zero five the Greek mathmetician archimedes working in the third century BC and the Chinese mathematician. Xue Changsa working in the Fifth Century. Ce ARE CO credited with calculating the most accurate approximations of Pi before Calculus and supercomputers gave us a more definitive answer. Then in seventeen o six. The self taught Welsh mathematician. William Jones assigned the Greek letter P. To this magical number without end possibly because P is the first letter of the Greek words. For periphery and perimeter symbols use was later popularized by Eighteenth Century. Spec petition Leonard Euler but wasn't adopted worldwide until nineteen thirty four. The fact that Pie can be found everywhere not only in circles but an arcs pendulums and interplanetary navigation and intimately long has inspired a cult following that includes plenty of Geeky tattoos and even its own National Holiday National Pie Day was officially recognized by the United States. Congress in two thousand nine but the definitely not square roots of the holiday can be traced back to nineteen eighty-eight and a man named Larry the Prince of Pie. Shaw Shaw was a beloved longtime employee at the exploratorium. A Science Museum in San Francisco California and came up with the idea of Pi Day on one thousand nine hundred eighty eight staff retreat following the death of exploratorium founder. Frank Oppenheimer the date for celebration. Well because the first digits of Pi Three Point one four March fourteenth or three fourteen even better march fourteenth is also Albert Einstein's birthday making Pi Day nerd doubleheader the first Pi Day celebration was nothing more than Shaw and his wife handing out slices of fruit pie and tea at one fifty nine. Pm One five nine being the three digits following three point one four but the holiday quickly gained fame in the bay area. Shaw eventually built be Pi Shrine at the exploratorium a circular classroom with a circular brass plaque at center. Every day celebration at the exploratorium ended with a colorful parade led by Shaw blasting his boombox with a remix of pomp and circumstance set to the digits of Pi and circling. The Pie Shrine. Exactly three point one four times. The parade ended with the singing of happy birthday to Albert Einstein. The prince pipe passed away in two thousand seventeen but the annual exploratorium party continues as do Pi Day celebrations. The world over popular ways to celebrate include. Baking a pie orb some kind of circular treat and holding pie recital contests the current world record for memorizing and reciting the most digits of Pi was set by Sharad Kumar Sharma of India in two thousand fifteen when he recited a staggering. Coronavirus - It's Going To Get Worse
"Worse the panic Democrat is all on coronavirus two thousand twenty it's gonna get worse just now got to our shores and it's starting itself up a little bit start to get a little loose right now it's gonna get a little loose then it's gonna get worse then it'll slowly but surely plateau it will be on to something else but yes it will get worse Washington's governor was to St Lucia there's a state called Washington said that he they expect potentially sixty plus thousand people to get it on how Merkel came out earlier and said Hey guess what V. I. expecting once seventy percent of all Germans to get this job your votes yep Italy having a lot of issues and part of that's because they're old initially as she'd be disproportionate number of people in their seventies eighties and nineties who are getting sick who were dying and Italy has the second oldest population on us and I think that really is a sense initially that the senior population under attack why don't you do right Spain's cancel all their school well it much like Italy here's what happens they take care of their family members they're all part of it what do I mean by that well they're a part of everything that has to do with family from top to bottom a lot like Asian countries where we do other things they're older members older people tend to live with their families initially it's not like here in Britain perhaps in the United States where you know we talk off old people into nursing homes they live with their families and so this idea perhaps that younger people who are more mod file don't get necessarily get sick but they can spread the virus and then older people are more susceptible to it and the less able to survive it so you have this kind of deadly concoction of mobile people spreading it on older people getting sick much more quickly yeah and as James log in there and he's right it's like maybe the movie outbreak it was the stupid monkey so what is it it's young kids there paid three digits once it I was talking yesterday to my consultant who works with me on the show and he normally travels throughout the globe and he's stopped traveling and I'm what I mean traveling he's got millions of miles he's he's on a plane every day going somewhere and he said he's not flying now but he also said it in Spain as they should everything down well it's not a full kind of isolation quarantine the parents maybe going to work but the kids are home from school and grandma and grandpa's take care of the kids so you've got the spreader being taken care of by the people that are most vulnerable is that gonna happen here I don't know what's gonna happen here I like a lot of us know what it's going to look like it will get worse but it's going to eventually get back it's just not there

You can make phone calls using Lexi but you cannot make calls to nine one one Four one one three digit numbers or premium. Numbers where you have to pay but this is the way you do it all right basically you. I have to have your Lexi APP on your phone. You also obviously need to have an Amazon account. You go into your communication settings on your LEXI APP and that's where you would set up your phone with your Lexi device and once. You've done that now. You can make calls hands-free through Lexi you simply say you know. Lexi call and the name of the number or you can say. Lexi call someone else's Echo. He say the name and the Echo if they have that setup as well so it's pretty cool. I just I tried it actually. I wasn't using it a whole lot and I try with my cell phone and worked great so there you go if you WANNA use Lexi to call someone you certainly can do that

"Your questions about the bay area for this week of holiday travel we have to transportation questions first let's talk freeway names the question from one of our listeners is about the numbers why so many of the bay area freeways and in eighty two eighty eight eighty five eighty three eighty answer that is transportation editor Dan breaking down why are we stuck in the eighties well we have just one interstate highway coming into the bay area that's interstate eighty and then we have a bunch of roads that are connected to it that are also big freeways and are called interstates now under the formal number ing system these three digit numbers that begin with a an even number are supposed to be loop routes that go around the region so we have to AT and six eighty and then the routes that have three digit numbers that begin with an odd number are supposed to be spurs like three eighty that connects San Francisco International Airport with interstate two eighty yeah but five eighty feels more like a loop the way it goes up and all the way out to the Central Valley that's right you're picking up on something that's pretty arbitrary here where five eighty begins out on interstate five in San Joaquin county goes all the way up to US one a one and ran so that doesn't really describe this poorer in at least in my book were years it sounds like and then we've got eighty which is another example of this definitely not a loop right it goes from the macarthur maze all the way down to downtown San Jose where it meets highway seventeen no hard feelings but that is my least favorite freeway and the bay area it is full of potholes you change lanes you feel like you're rocking the boat I think you have lots of company so that's the Nimitz freeway and I always wonder why is it called the Nimitz freeway who was he and and what did he do to deserve all those potholes and he didn't do anything to deserve pot holes it was named after admiral Chester Nimitz she was one of the heroes of World War two he led the United States naval forces in the Pacific all right KQED transportation editor Dan Breaky safe driving you to watch out for those potholes on the Nimitz thanks okay speaking of historic roadways let's talk about the traffic circle at the foot of the Berkeley hills you drive around it if you had a Marin Avenue to Tilden park and in the middle is a Beaux Arts fountain with whimsical grizzly bear cubs around it one bay curious Lister wanted to know how it got there turns out it was the site of a power struggle they could have reshaped California history Maggie Galloway has the story the story of this Berkeley circle starts at the turn of the twentieth century when Berkeley went from open grasslands and rolling hillside to to a boom town during this time between nineteen hundred and nineteen ten Berkeley triplets.
Promising approaches in suicide prevention
"One eight hundred two seven three talk to a shorter three digit number likely nine eight. What kind of effect could shortening the number for this lifeline have on prevention. I think the idea is just to make it easier to remember that ten. Digit number is is a little cumbersome and having a simple number like nine eight dip people can remember will hopefully encourage more people to call and reach out for help when they're experiencing a crisis and there are a number of straightforward approach as you call them in your story that you talk about and one of the big ones is lifelines when did they we start and what does the research show on their effectiveness suicide hotlines of spin around for for quite a while at least since the nineteen fifties the current system that we have in the u._s. called the national suicide prevention lifeline and it's actually a network of about one hundred and seventy separate separate crisis call centers around the country you get routed to one that's closest to where you are so that ideally they can connect you to resources in your area and then if that happens to be all tied up you get routed to another close. You know hopefully close by one overall. There is more research i than i had realized going into this on the lifeline and the vast majority of people who call report that they experience talking to train counselor. You're on the lifeline save their life and kept them safe to these have been around since the nineteen fifties has the technique that these crisis counselors use when they're talking to people on the phone changed much since then it has evolved. There's a research team in canada. That's done a lottery search looking into what aspects of the interaction between the caller and the counselor make for a positive outcome meaning a reduction in the person's suicide -ality and an intent to harm themselves by the end of the call. These guys listened to thousands of calls in real time. They've got permission from the crisis centers to do this. What they found was. Actually you know really just common sense that when the counselors expressed empathy and kind of established a rapport with the caller are they were much more effective at reducing their their suicide -ality they just treat them with respect and take the problem seriously and kind of work with them. It's a find a solution as opposed to just telling them what to do that. Approach seemed to be the most effective and sometimes they also do follow up calls as well right. Is this just recently or has. This been a practice for awhile. It's been going on for a while but the more research is done. The more suggest that this is a really important thing saying that the the call with a counter can really help deescalate a crisis for someone but it's not going to resolve a lifetime of problems or serious mental illness or a substance abuse so the idea now is to use that initial call as a sort of a foot in the door to getting people into a sort of pathway take care that's tailored to their situation but the act of following up a few weeks later has been shown to really help people and reduce their feelings of desperation <hes> intent to harm themselves. Another prevention method that you talk about in your story is how care centers like hospitals and clinics can can refine their protocols in order to reduce the rate of suicides. Could you talk about what that entails. The zero suicide program is something that's really it caught fire in the last five years or so at hospital systems around the country it did start at henry ford which is based in detroit and it came out of a discussion shen actually that happened after they applied for a grant and didn't get it. The grants were supposed to be for clinicians trying to design perfect care for a particular condition. Edition could be any condition but henry ford the condition the they wanted to design perfect care for was depression and they didn't get the grant and that prompted opted them to think harder about what would perfect care for people with depression look like and so one person at the table during the discussions was a nurse and she said well if we had perfect depression care than we would have no suicides and so that idea kind of caught on and became like an aspirational goal for the people there that they should try in every case to prevent suicide and so the program it's evolved over the years with evidence but there's some basic things like just screening all of the patients in their behavioral health system so these are patients who come in with depression or maybe substance abuse things like that screening preening them at every contact with the hospital to assess their risk for suicide and then having a a pretty standard is pathway of care depending on on the risk so that doctors and providers know given a patient's risk like here's a menu of options and kind of like a flow chart of the different things is it can be done for them to relieve them of a little bit of the decision making process by having it all kind of standardized other facilities in the united states have also adopt this protocol as well hundreds actually of healthcare systems and clinics are trying to implement this now and there's a large study. Hey that's getting underway to see how well it's working. At nine. Big healthcare systems around the

The FCC's looking to kill off robocalls for good (The 3:59, Ep. 567)
"The. Welcome to the three fifty nine I'm Alfred Dan Ackerman. Did you got a robo call today? Did you know that it cost Americans at least three billion dollars a year? That's according to the FCC, who is set to vote today on giving mobile phone companies more power to block robocalls. I mean these things are incredibly frustrating. They spam your phone. They annoy you throughout the day in March alone. There were two point five billion robo calls the FCC found the problem is there are a few legitimate. Robo calls that do happen. You know, your doctor's office remind you, you have an appointment today or pharmacist saying, hey, you got a refill your medicine, or you will die. I mean how can you get these robo calls. Oh. And how often are those like the actually useful, you definitely have the more often than the modern equivalent of spam for many years in the early to mid two thousand Email was practically useless, because it was all spam and Julie figuring out affect blocking mechanisms and then the profit motive went out of it right now, the profit motive is there in robocalls, and until they come up with a way of removing that profit motive by. Blocking or filtering, most of them, they're gonna continue. Yeah, I found that like, because of all these fam- calls I almost never pick up my phone anymore because they've done a really good way a trick where they make the phone number look like it's from your. The first three digits are yours as oh, maybe that's like somebody in my family. Nope. Nother robot got him so. Yeah, this is actually the number one complaint from the FCC. They get like hundreds of thousands of shirts year on this, obviously, phone makers are taking action to apple announced that WW DC that there would be a new Iowa's, thirteen feature that sends any unknown numbers straight to voice. Man. Speaking of WW DC, Dan, you just came back from in had a hands on the MAC pro the MAC, pro everyone was waiting for this, obviously, they had the little like the trash can back over the last six years, that big black cylinder. The new one is I founded shockingly, conservative and traditionalist in its approach. And I don't necessarily mean that bad way. But it goes back to being a tower basically almost in a way inspired by gaming desktops, where you can take the side off swap out any parts tons of slots, it's basically a big rectangular a big rectangular tower desk. Stop which is not what it's been for the last six years now, does the MAC pro great all kinds of cheeses or is it? Hard cheese. Okay. And if you have something softer you're gonna wanna refrigerate it first firm it up a little bit. But certainly something like a gray hair or like a good. If it's smoke, then you can get some real good shreds off, and then the thousand dollar stand how. Right. Oh my goodness. So they had the fancy new pro monitor also, which is actually a good looking product does not seem overpriced for what it is intended for a very select audience. It's five or six thousand dollars paying which version, you get. But when you get the pro monitor it does not come with the stand or anything in the by she got up by this dance. Definitely. And it's a nicely engineered special STAN, that you could turn the screen sideways and put it in portrait mode, and other stuff. It's a thousand dollars. And let me tell you even though we were in the WW, keynote, where most of the audience is apple developers real fan boy types. When they said that the temperature in the room drop by about thirty five degrees. Everyone just went. And then they're all back up a minute later or something else. But for for moment, chilly room was do you think it's worth it? Like having seen it I don't know because they had a lot of MAC pros. And a lot of MAC pro monitors and stands set up all over the place, but you could not touch them. You could not even touch the monitor or see how the stand worked if you even reached out for it, some big tackle you guys. Dollars buddy. Get your off of it. Well, while the MAC pros, extremely powerful, Google is coming out and saying that you won't need a supercomputer to play the latest games they'll be showing off stadium. It's new cloud gaming platform later today. Basically, if you're not familiar means you'll be able to play high games through through the cloud, and you won't need this server side computing game is being played on a rack of GPS stuffed server somewhere and it just basically beams, the output to you, as you send your input to controller through the keyboard and mouse. I just did a panel last week. In London the casual connect conference on the future of cloud gaming, and we talked about stadia and all the other versions of this, that have been around for a long time really on live, was one of the first ones and they went out of business. They were little head of their time but still really impressive guy KYW was another that Sony bought and turned into PlayStation now, which is their version of it. Which, again kinda sorta works but do you see this as the actual future of Sunday? Yes. 'cause every future game console after I said the last year the current generation Xbox One and PlayStation four we're going to be the last generation of actual hardware boxes. And I was wrong. I was off. But I think this generation is going to be the last one future under just going to be kind of like this, like a little, like Roku sized box that you plug into a TV, or it'll be built into a TV and everything is going to be server side, just like no in downloads movies really anymore except under special circumstances. Everything just streams, same thing with the future of game. All right. That is more than the time that we had for today's show. Four zero five. Thanks for listening. I'm Alfred Dan Ackerman.

Hackers Nab Your Data in a Few Minutes for a Few Bucks
"A seemingly endless string of breaches have hit big companies and their users in recent years, five hundred million potential victims at Marriott, Starwood properties. One hundred seventeen million users in the twenty twelve hack of linked in three billion at Yahoo. And twenty thirteen the list goes on what you might not know is that these attacks fuel a black market swimming in stolen, data bought sold and repackaged for criminal use here to fill us in on. What's been going on while we were just living our lives? None. The wiser for a change is Robert MacMillan in our New York City podcast studio, welcome. Hey, China, Japan, New York nice to see you. So I'll just get into it. I think most of us would be surprised to learn just how much stolen data is available on the dark web. So enlighten us if you would or frighten us, I should say because this is important. It was it was actually quite surprising to me. It's all there. I mean, everything right. Yeah. If somebody wants your. Personal data that your date of birth your social, they can they can get it. I mean, that's that was a revelation to me as well. But you know, I interviewed FBI agent who has worked on many of these cases. And he said, it's all there. I believe him. I'll such it's created this. What you call a pipeline for personal data. It's made it so cheap and easy to get the asking price for a single piece of data such as a credit card number. What is that go far? I'd love to get a feel for these kinds of things. Yeah. So you know, the day that can be can be very cheap. Because like let your identity is the raw material for an entire kind of factory line of products that are made from that data. So they can, you know, look, very large databases can be sold for not a lot of money. So you could you could be looking at paying, you know, a fraction of a cent for username and password. You know, a nickel for social security number or you know, you asked about credit card while credit US credit card. Numbers go for between seven and eleven dollars. And I would include you know, the the three digit number on the back of them. European credit card numbers are a little bit more expensive than you got Bank accounts. You know, Bank accounts that have been validated. You know, you can you can buy those for maybe starting at a hundred dollars. So you get access to a Bank account. And then it's up to you, the the criminal who's bought access to this Bank account to empty it of money and somehow get that money into your hands, which is which is risky. So there is this this whole range of things that are basically being bought and sold by criminals, and it's all based on your data. That's that's been, you know, honestly, very poorly stewarded by these companies companies are supposed to protect your data on the and they're not doing it. And now criminals are making money. So what was interesting to learn, though, wise just this cottage industry that's been created. Let's for example, criminals, assemble these comper. Henson files called foles with z which I like, but it's interesting to learn because these things are packaged processed in sold in bulk. How did this become the whole business that it is? Well, it's creativity right of the, you know, you're a criminal. And I think in the early days, the idea was to break into Bank accounts, or maybe steal credit card numbers from people the markets get saturated or you get this data you use a bunch of the credit card or you. You get basically so many credit card numbers. You you can't process them all yourself. So maybe sell those to somebody else user names and passwords the same kind of thing. You know, people just experiment and innovate. And and you know, it's a it's a very entrepreneurial space cybercrime criminal tutorials for sale as well. Not on this stark west. Yeah. It's kind of like if you have this way of making money. Why would you sell the techniques that you're using to somebody else? And some of these products are are not good, right? Like, some people. All sell things that are they claim that they you know, it's a database of passwords that will get you into Amazon dot com accounts, and you buy it, and they don't work. You know? I mean, it's really are criminals. We're talking about here. So so in light of this in light of the, you know, the latest that's been going on with Marriott bridge. There's there's no shortage of cyber vulnerability. You're in town for a big conference on the topic. What do we the consumer do what where do we land right now? How do we be the most proactive in our affairs? Yeah. Considering all of this going on. Well, if you're not planning on applying for a credit card or a loan of some sort in the near future, you should get a credit freeze, right? Like that can save you a lot of hassle and, you know, quite honestly should get one for your kids too. Because the criminals are not above stealing the identities of children, and and misusing that so credit freeze is pretty easy thing to do. You can do it for free. Now, you kind of check in with the credit bureaus and just it puts a barrier to some. Stealing your identity and taking it a car loan without your permission. That's a really simple thing. Even more of a no brainer would be to get a second factor authentication on your Email account, and particularly often if your Email gets hacked that becomes like the gateway to getting into all kinds of other accounts and less than ten percent of users have to factor indication on services such as g mail. So you can do that. I mean, I wrecked. The way I recommend

And I just want to start with Ed explain it my friend tell everybody how this is going to work l. basically, the idea is that when you get a call safe from a number, you don't recognize an actually. You could even use it for number. You do recognize you can actually Chapa button that will initiate this call screen feature on the latest pixel phone the pixel three and it will just as the name suggests screen that call and the caller will actually hear an automated message. Basically telling them that that there's a screening service from Google of that's screening and they can as they leave a message. If they leave a message in real time, you'll actually see transcription of that message. And then you obviously can decide whether we actually want to answer the phone or not who you LA, you tweeted that you thought this was the biggest news of the day and in pretty groundbreaking, why do you feel that way? Oh, well, ironically enough flaws at Google of I got a call from somebody who spam the first half of my phone number, including my area code in the first three digits as I'm sure many people out there have received probably even whenever they're listening to us, so it hits home in. It's something that's been a real problem for the entire cell phone industry for manufacturers carriers or anyone who uses a phone because it's frustrating and everybody uses everybody phone and everybody seems to be victims of these hyper spam calls do nothing but frustrate interrupt your day in what you're doing. So anything that can help win this fight against spammers hell marketers. It is interesting in my book. The other way you can use this feature with to it's, you know, and you might wanna use that if you're tied up and you hear the actual transcription of whatever the message is right apple on its own transcribes, voicemails. This will let you do it in real time. So transcribing voicemails opposed to just sending a text message or transforming causes to text message. I don't know if you'd prefer one or the other, but if you're in a meeting or class and you see a call from a significant other or loved one, it will let you see if at port, right, exactly. Let you see if this thing is you need to stop it. You're doing an answer or if it's just someone checking in aren't. Gosh, you list out the corner logic chronology of NVIDIA cards at the river. The river went to eight, right? The TNT TNT to g force came out. She force I believe, launched air force to then they went to the kind of stuck with them, right, right. And then the number number scheme, the forty, two hundred forty four one hundred forty, six hundred fifty, five hundred series. Then they went to the three digits to eighty. Four eighty five eighty six eighty and the ninety, and then ten eighty was the most recent. How long ago was that couple years ago? And now it's the two eighty, but as opposed to the GTS twenty eighty twenty eighty. Sorry it is now the Artie x twenty eight series, which we've seen hints of the architecture from the Quadra the seagrass. They announced the high end workstation version of that card. Now the RT x. It's very long and a little dry, but they did show some interesting demos. They showed. Basically what that racing is going to do is improve shadows. Yup. And improve reflections. Yes. So a little bit of a primer for how shadows reflections work in video games versus in big budget films in video games and on on desktop gaming because you have to turn out frames at what fourteen milliseconds wanted every forty most at thirty or sixty PS. And in some cases much higher on the frustration, your monitor you. They do a lot of cheats for the lighting. You bake in light maps.
