"Today we are joined by the man the myth, the legend behind ENS, the Ethereum name service. Since we last chatted with Nick in 2021, he has made ENS a household name across the crypto industry and beyond. Nick and I get into the details behind the ENS road map, including the latest V three announcement. What it was like for Nick to go from Google to the Ethereum foundation to founding ENS. And inside scoop on last year's drama with Brantley and the current culture at ENS and so much more. But first, Nick is going to tell us the founding story of ENS and how he managed to go from Google to Ethereum to founding ENS. I joined the Ethereum foundation after a financial services company reached out and said, do you want to work for us on Ethereum? And I would not really, but the Ethereum thing sounds interesting. Stat playing around that started writing code very quickly got hired by the Ethereum foundation and it was a big plunge to go from comfortable well paid Google to the uncertainties of life as a contractor with half the salary and no real guarantees much less time off holidays, but a really exciting platform and product to be working on. And I very quickly started working on E and S as a side project inside the Ethereum foundation, and that fairly quickly migrated from being my side project to my full-time project. And eventually it got to the point where it was too big for a single person to do it. Totally, amazing. And I love that risk-taking nature, such an important part of entrepreneurship. And when was that that you first heard about Ethereum? That would have been 2016. Amazing. Okay, great. And then tell us a little bit about what it was like working inside of the Ethereum foundation in the early days. It was interesting. It certainly didn't feel like early days at the time. The mainly has been out almost a year. If red felt like old salts, you know, I felt like I was joining late, but I guess everybody does accept the founders. You've written away that feeling that you're late to the party. It was interesting. It was a very collaborative environment. The teams were quite small. We had some pretty remarkable things we were trying to achieve. And largely it was, I guess you'd say it was very decentralized in a way.

Unpacking CES 2023: Where Was Web3?
"How is CES? How is a consumer electronic show? What did you think of it this year? I didn't make it, so I'm really curious if web three was everywhere, or if it was anywhere. Great question. CES was a little bit of both. One, there were some amazing people, great conversations that were had. We interviewed, I think almost 20 people and did a bunch of great Sessions on stage. And so that was fantastic. The thing that I was most interested in is how much web three was not showing up on the show floor. For anyone who hasn't been to CES, it is really an expo show. It is a 1 million ft² of demo space for people to show off their new wares. There was like 15 foot holograms of Mark Cuban. There was all of this amazing sort of gaming and VR tech and haptic tech that we saw and tons of autonomous cars. But when I kept looking, I was like, oh, I'm not seeing much web three here, which compared to when you go to a south by Southwest or a can or even art Basel. You see what three almost everywhere? Here it was kind of missing. And so I'm just, I was a bit surprised because I thought I would see more from not being there, but seeing the news, what was your takeaway? Yeah, well, I was thinking about going and I've been to CES a bunch of times before. This year, just timing didn't work out. So I was following along the news. I was really excited to see what Raja for Mastercard announced with Mastercard's web three accelerator. They're doing that in collaboration with polygon studios, which I thought was really cool. That seemed to be sort of the biggest web three announcement in news, but a lot of what I was seeing was more hardware developments like L'oreal, unveiled some new technology on the applicator phase for people with accessibility challenges. I thought that was amazing. I didn't see a ton about web three though, outside of Mastercard's announcement with polygon.

"Speaker three is so forth. And then the moderator for the group or an individual with administrative rights can go back and replace those speaker one speaker twos with the actual name of the person. We've actually had a customer who was fascinated with and is in the middle of using this right now for very, very good reason as they are, as they're bringing users back to their corporate offices, they're also trying to keep the equality of experience with the remote users have. And as they blend into this hybrid workspace, if you're a remote user and you don't know the voices, as I said, particularly if people are wearing masks, it's very, very hard to tell who is saying what. So they want to elevate this experience for their remote users and let them be certain who is saying which words out of this multi person room and the capture 5 is a perfect solution for them in that area. And it's one that they're looking to roll out in the near future. So I thought that was an interesting use case for specific transcription. And before we move on to your third announcement, I'm really interested also in how this improves the functionality of teams. Well, I think what it does is it is the physical connection to the room that facilitates the services that teams has just added, they made a midsummer announcement that added a lot of features for their users. Transcription and subtitles were two of the key ones, particularly, as I said, if we're in a, as we're more in this hybrid work environment and as we attempt to equalize the on prem and remote experiences. And without this particular device without this capture 5, which is unique to epos today without this capture 5 any speech that comes out of a multi person room will be attributed to that room. So the transcription would read that that speech or that instance that utterance came from the blue Bond room or the Golden Gate room or whatever the name of the conference room or the name of the Microsoft resource that was hosting the meeting there. Rather than saying it came from the blue Bond room and it was Bob Dylan that made that speech or the blue bonnet room and it was Susan Jones. So I think it really unlocks a lot of the value that Microsoft has worked hard to put in to some of the backend services that teams.

Right between the marvel ex-con game the borderland spin off and hangar thirteenth. In which i'm i'm just hearing about now completely meets saints row. A supernatural open world game by hangar. Thirteen like those three announcements. Which one is the most wild out here. I think the most exciting for people is gonna be the marvel ex-con because people love ex-con people love marvel. Marvel games have been doing such an excellent job in terms of partnering with developers to make sure that they're finding ways to make marble games that are the best fit and so we get games like spider man. Coming from insomniac. We get games like a vendor's coming out from crystal dynamics which maybe could get a lot better down the road. We're turning the corner and it was fun to play conduct coming up. We have endgame costumes bitch. About regardless morals ultimately lions three. If you're making a galaxy game you know like you you get into the comparisons to get into the conversation of. Are these games similar. I think this is a very smart route being like cool. We got two vendors. We have maybe guardians of the galaxy. How do we diversify. How do we as mobile games. Craig games that they're speaking to multiple different audiences and utilizing the brand or utilize the ip as best as possible between these different ways. Big tech companies back away from selling facial recognition to police
"Big companies are saying they're not gonNA make facial recognition technology so just the quick rundown IBM announced it's no longer offer, develop or research facial recognition technology. There's some important caveats that Amazon has banned the police from using its. Facial recognition system called recognition for the next year. Which is the other caveat? Internally. Microsoft, which is sort of talked about this? A lot has said we will not sell facial recognition to the police. Insult Congress Passes Privacy Law. Another caveat they're all caveated announcements, but. Just before we started recording, I was saying you do not see a technology at this stage of development. Halted in any way because of social concerns, so walk us through what's happening? Obviously in the context of black lives matter the protests, but walk us through what is going on anouncements and how they work? Yeah, I mean so I. Think something that I definitely want to highlight up. Top is the history of criticism of these systems which goes back years, and there's a few researchers particularly enjoyable Weenie Timmy Gebru who, in two thousand, eighteen published a paper called gender shades. which they really sort of provided the first comprehensive empirical evidence that there are racial and gender bias with these systems, so that's been alone of criticism that's been picked up. How does facial recognition work so facial recognition is based on machine learning. which is sort of technology that looks for patterns in large data sets, and then tries to predict or find those patterns elsewhere. In this case, the patterns it's looking for our measurements based on your face now there's lots of different ways that these algorithms work, but basically they're looking for say the distances between certain landmark features on your face that could be the distance between your eyes from your nostrils to the tip of your mouth between your eyebrows all. All those sorts of things so they will be scanning faces. They will be measuring those little points, and then they will be comparing them to a database. There's different ways that could happen. You might be doing a one, too many find where you have a face that you've say record on TV and you're looking for it in a big watch list of people, or it might be a one to one thing which is what happens at a passport. Border check where you have one picture one face, and you're just looking to see if there are match or not, those technologies are implemented in very various ways. You know some people use them to pull footage from TV that they analyze later. Some do live TV stuff that's happened in London for example and somewhat to integrate them onto body cameras as well so there's a lot of different ways is coming up, but you're basically getting an algorithm that looks at your face and looks to see if it matches another. Let's start at the top right. There is the gender shades paper. There is this just enormous body of evidence that. Facial recognition systems are biased against gender and race. Just unpack that a little bit, and what does that actually mean in practice for people? What should people understand about that? So that means that the same? System when it's looking at a white face when it's looking in the face of a person of color. It is going to be just less accurate when it comes to matching identities when it comes to just simply saying say what gender, it thinks that person is these algorithms consistently get lowest scores for non white faces. It's really as simple as that. The huge terrifying scary things is when you think about how those judgments then going to be used by people with power over your life, whether that's the law enforcement, or whether that's a private company. Many of whom are buying these systems and integrating them say into a watch list for the shop, and they are going to start going well system says your on our. Nautilus, and you can't come into the shop and you know what recourse you have in a scenario right, so I always think of this in terms of the TSA. IGN Expo Day 1: Everything Announced and Revealed
"There was other announcements that happened yesterday. So John is doing their summer of gaming with their Aegean Expo and day one yesterday had a bevy of announcements. Mostly you know smaller, India or double A. Games, but Brittany we have you to talk to us all about everything that was revealed for Yuccas Leka drag over. It looks so good. I know I'm going to play this game surprising. No one is I'm trying not to learn about the plot point and at one point Oh gosh, someone from.
