"A one of many who is trying Story Next time on marketplace marketplace comes on this afternoon at four o'clock here on KQED Public radio. I'm Carol Hill's. This is the world Picture this you're in a remote part of the Amazon rainforest You've been tracking for hours. Suddenly you come across a giant rock face covered with ancient paintings. That's what a team of archaeologists uncovered recently in Colombia, miles of paintings, some dating back 12,000 years. My colleague, Marco woman spoke with Mark Robinson, an archaeologist at the University of Exeter in the UK who was part of that team. Marco asked Robinson to describe what you see when you stand right in front of those paintings. The thing that leaps out is just the sheer extent of them on the color. They're so vibrant. Now the ice starts to adjust to them. You start to pick out the individual images and there are a range of sizes from giant depictions down to very small really minute with quite fine detail. The thing that really leads out immediately is a depiction of the animals and has a range of animals from these large beast with trunks to things like horses, which went extinct in America's over 10,000 years ago and something else we should point out about this rock face where he found these paintings. Many of these paintings are way high up so high that gathered many of them had to be photographed using drones. I mean, do you have any idea how artist thousands of years ago were able to paint from that high up? The actual ability to paint in these more inaccessible locations is not such a mystery. There's enough jungle products out there from trees and vines, which can easily bind together and you could make a lot of very quickly. So neither more interesting thing is. Why did they put it into these locations They no longer visible from the ground, they no longer visible from anywhere, really? So who were they making his paintings for? Is it tagging something? Because it is hard Or is it more of an offering an offering to Earth day it is to ancestors to some kind of concept of their God. It's a fascinating things look into further. We start to look a spatial pattern off these images. The word discovery is being used here, Mark. I know this is a remote site, but do we know of people living in the surrounding areas? Knew these paintings were there. So this since known work are in the area. Now, this sites we went to we worked with the local community and we worked with some local guides. They had no knowledge off the new panels we found So as far as we know, this is a certainly new discovery to science and to the wider world, and this adds huge amount tol corpus, the actual whole assemblage of art we have in the region and we've just scratched the surface. So we're talking about a very exciting discovery of paintings that have perhaps 12,000 years old. How significant is this All? It's really important to humanity. It's a core part of what makes us human. So having such a large corpus of art from a region on which dates back so early to the very first Americans, it's It's just priceless. This is it's not so much potential to understand who we are as a species now. Beyond that, the actual scientific side as we start to understand these people and their impact on the environment, and the land states is matter. The interactions I had with the landscape around them with the animals with the plants. This is what set forth the whole biodiversity That is the Amazon, the most biodiverse location on the planet. And yet people were there right from the beginning, as it's establishing before it's even afford tropical forest people. They're manipulating plants. They're metal plate in animals that hunt in that setting fires. This all has an impact on how vegetation grows and how happens has changed over time, and we're going to look deeper and deeper into how people have really influenced these kind of global systems. Mark Robinson is an archaeologist at the University of Exeter. He was part of the team that uncovered extensive ancient paintings on a rock face in the Amazon in Colombia. Great to have you with us, Mark. Thank you. Thank you, Mother Nature. Horrific Frankenstein versions of the Middle Eastern, messy. That's how my next guest, Kareem Shaheen, describes the varieties of Hamas that have been popping up in recent years. Dark chocolate mint desert Hamas Anyone What about cilantro and jalapeno? No, thanks, says Shaheen, who's been writing about this for the national a news outlet based in the United Arab Emirates. He joins me now from Montreal. Cream. Let's start with the very basics. What is Hamas? How much is a 17 depth? It's a It's a very popular measure or appetizer in the Middle East. It's made of period chickpeas and the honey and lemon and olive oil, a little garlic, and sometimes it's topped with meter by nuts or simply olive oil on it's it's enjoyed in a wide variety of countries in the region. So why do you think that basic recipe shouldn't be tampered with? Because it's absolutely perfect. It's you know, you wouldn't take, you know an original recipe of anything, anything that already exists as a perfect version of itself, and then go ahead and temper with that you wouldn't take a Kobe steak, for example, that's that's absolutely perfect. And then you know, I'd catch up to it. These variants are really interesting. You know, the one that you mentioned at the start the dark chocolate mint Desert, Thomas. It just I mean, in addition to not making any sense, it also you know is one of those things. It simply appears to Ah, you western palate that is developing right now and caters to you know all these various fat diets, And in addition to that, you know this sort of consumerism that that creates, you know, adulterated versions of these original recipes really robs them of their of their authenticity. You know, it's It's fascinating to see these two different competing trends when it comes to food, right. No. One is that we're constantly looking for novelty and for different takes on, you know existing products and existing things that have for a long time been part of Culture, but at the same time, we're also always striving for originality and authenticity in our experiences, and those two values are really cashing in this homeless debate. The argument of trying to make is that you know, you can go ahead and experiment as much as you want to whatever food you want to play around with, but it's just not not homeless. Something that you think that the kind of takeoffs on Hamas are er bit of cultural appropriation on my right. Well, you know, to a certain extent, I suppose it is I for me. The primary objection to the whole thing is just that It's really bad taste. You know the way a lot of French people are particularly very particular about the exact way you consume questions. You know, Italians will refuse to serve you cappuccinos in the afternoon. You know, there need to be some limits. They need to be some, You know the proper way of consuming Things so Korean? This sounds really personal for you. Um You know what it Zay look part of the part of the experience of being an immigrant and I have an immigrant now, you know, is the idea of like preserving some of the things from home. That make you who you are. You know, we cling to some of these, You know cultural products as they existed than in their unadulterated form. Okay, I have to ask. What's your favorite Thomas recipe. There's primarily two ways of beating Hamas. One is an appetizer and them and it's you know, it's usually talked with olive oil, and you see the most Middle Eastern mess a spreads. The other one is more of a fuller meal. Essentially it Zoe Hamas dish topped with meat and pine nuts and toasted pine nuts with piping hot G on defeat that that's that's basically full meal, and you should try not to do anything else in the immediate aftermath, because because you won't be able to Kareem Shaheen is a writer based in Montreal. He's been talking with us about the many unconventional takes on the humble but beloved Homis Karim. Thanks for speaking with us. Thank you for having me. All right now I'm hungry..

Later on the show, what is your overall level of enthusiasm for the Thursday night game I unfortunately I am I think I'm about a three I think the browns are boring. Actually. Fence fenceline is even on the trade shirt. Hey, maybe I'll. Maybe I'll give it some legitimate thought. Yes. I. Will. I'm excited for any football game at this. Yes I look of course I'm excited for football, but we can be honest some games I'm more excited about than others Brown. Bengals is not really even with borough. I don't know not really no this. This is a fascinating game. Really. You've got the. Kevin Sanski as bad. As last year, and so it actually wasn't the coaching last year Baker? Mayfield's just terrible angle. You've got the Kareem Hunt Nick Chubb Angle I think about the whole borough ankle Joe. Borough I the Odell Beckham Aj Green might just be exceptional Bilo candidates wide receiver in that might be ruined on Thursday night I think they might be both be awesome in that game so yeah, I'm I'm pretty excited to see I think both bengals receivers are excellent Bilo candidates right now green look great I know that the stat line doesn't say but looked really good out there on in week one. Yeah. I know yeah to almost touchdowns you gotta love is really good. Yeah he was wide open for one borough. So. Did you go back and watch that game? I watched parts of it I. Would I came back away from it was that the bengals defense is still not great. Their offensive line is terrible. It is like we talked up it'll be a little bit better with John Williams there and all that. Oh. My God it's bad and it's getting worse there starting billy price at right guard against Cleveland and the one thing that browns defense did remotely well week one was slow down the run of the Ravens. So I I'm I'm a little nervous about Joe Mixon this think bill you're going to start him anyway, but he could end up having some tough times and and and he didn't ask down. So it was Chiyo also. Could be frustrating. We could be looking at Bilo opportunity for mixing here and a couple of days. I actually have both browns running backs ranked to Joe Mixing Right now. He did get what one thousand nine carries. Yes, right? Yeah. Something it's funny that. I think in that game, he and Austin received the exact same workload and warning alarms going off all over the place four first round pick Austin and everybody like Yeah Joe Mixing Got Nineteen carries no I think. Based on tweets and emails. I'm seeing some concern about mixing but this happens I mean. You know this happens people freak out about offensive lines and they their right to do it. But I think the bigger concern is the fact that team Geo got five targets game. Yeah. Well, see if it's a trend. All right. We'll preview that game concerns in a little bit. Let's talk about Michael Thomas. So He's He's not convinced. He's going to miss a of time but there was a report that don't miss several weeks. They're considering putting him on I R, which is only three weeks at least three weeks this year he's got an ankle sprain high ankle sprain and you certainly should I expect Michael Thomas this week. But what is his trade value give me a wide receiver that you would take that you would give up to get Michael Thomas at this point. Them in the same spot in the trade charters. KYW's like Allen. Robinson Robert. Woods. In non PR there with AJ Brown Dj more. Metcalf. And that's on the assumption that he misses just a few games and that when he comes back, he's mostly fine. That could be too big of an accent and assumption we've seen the high ankle sprain really. Slowdown players in the past and it takes them a long time to get over. I don't I don't think people should just give away Michael Thomas I. Think they need to just wait this one out somebody comes with the really good offer everyone who followed the been gretch method of drafting receivers. needs to be going to make a trade off for Michael Thomas I agree. With Dave of that range of wide receiver, you might go a little lower and be able to get him. You might have to pay a little bit more but if you drafted four of those receivers from round two through six. and. So you have a surplus of wide receivers and you have a Lotta guys in that range that's exactly the team that should be going to try to trade. For Thomas. Because you can still start three wide receivers, you cannot use Thomas Find Affleck's somewhere else and then when he comes back your just stacked. Okay and Admit that that's the whole thing here whoever has Michael. Thomason behalf Kato across fantasy. Leagues for the next couple of weeks whoever ends up with him and is five or better when he comes back I mean in theory you've got your ticket punched for the playoffs and you'll be a legit contender for the crown. So that's why I'm not going to be in such a huge hurry to dump Michael Thomas. But if two weeks from now I'm Owen Three Michael Thomas Sitting on my bench I need a win. That's when all star taking some offers on him. GotTa bring up saquon Barkley who came back to early from a high ankle sprain and was pretty lousy for a few weeks and then he won. The League winner down the WHO was incredible. But you know gotTA bring that up. He definitely was playing through something. He said he had he had. kind of a separate injury after he came back wasn't the same aggravation but. He did come back pretty quickly so that that possibility does exist but it's a risk worth taking in the Robert Woods range something like that. If you want to give up a wide receiver, Jonathan Taylor, Michael, Thomas Recipes and. Taylor which I said yesterday. Okay Yeah I called out on it. I'd. I'd probably take Thomas and. No I mean now if we were redrafting today and you knew that you couldn't have Michael Thomas Until Maybe week five, and if not week five, then it's gotta be week seven. You're really going to take him, Jonathan? Taylor. It's popular I think it's also possible. It's week three or four. Okay. I'd be surprised that would.

Collins who was who was serving drinks at any rate yes yes a few stories attributed the drinks creation to bartender named Tom Collins in New York or San Francisco or Australia probably multiple places outside of that Speculated at the time the name change because of the preference for old Tom Gin Yeah from John Collins to Tom Collins. Right Tom Gin and a word here about the The State of Jin and other juniper based liquors at the time because this is important so the popular Jen's on the scene around the eighteen sixties were these slightly Sweeter and less spiced. Jin's called Old Tom. Jans and these are liquors that are flavored. Dry Style genes. Which are what's popular today and they can also be a little bit milder but in a different way than your neighbor spelled with a j which is the European juniper flavored liquor that the British were inspired by when they created gin. And your neighbor comes in a couple of different categories Milder young and aged funky multi aerobatic out and Yeah it comes from the Netherlands Belgium like slash the surrounding area. We'll have to do a whole episode on it but But Yeah All three of these products London Dry Gin old Tom. Gin and Yeah never would have been available at various bars in the time It would have been prudent to specify which you wanted in drank rather than just saying like Jenn although most of the time if he said Jen you would have gotten old. Tom Or Anyway London dry style wouldn't really become popular until the turn of the Twentieth Century So yes at the time in the English speaking world. Tom Was a little bit synonymous with. Jen Expense yes. Since the first known recorded recipe for the Tom Collins appeared in the eighteen. Seventy six second edition of Jerry. Thomas's the bartenders guide. Full title the bartender's guide how to mix drinks or the bond events companion. I've also read. It might have been the eighteen. Seventy seven printing mysteries history. Yes so this entry encompassed a type of drink that was then further specified with the type of alcohol. You so jen Tom Collins Brandy Tom. Collins over the years mixologist went on to specifically define Tom Collins as a GIN drink. The original Thomas Recipe was take five or six dashes of Gum Syrup. Sugar Syrup juice of a small lemon one large wine glass of and two or three lumps of ice one large glass. I don't think that it mental type of large wine glasses that we think of when we think of large wine glasses which might fit like an entire bottle of wine. I think I do. Yeah well I have one of those but yeah I hope it did. It would explain a few things about that That Jin fear. Yes at Jin madness that that went through but no no I. I think it was A. I'm not. I'm not actually sure entirely what it means. I meant to look it up and then didn't so there you go. Yeah and just throw out there. We we do ever pass up. Said we did on GIN and we also made a really cool video with a local silvery old forest about the making of jammed and we got to help make. Janet was pretty pretty. Yeah Oh yeah we got to get Some of their some of their finishing juniper from a local cemetery so we got to go out to the cemetery and pick juniper with them and then they put on the bottling line and I think we would have stayed there forever. F- If they hadn't run out of GIN bottle so yes yes all of a sudden I felt like I worked their way. Yes Oh no I was. I was just getting really good at the at the Cork stoppage machine to hoof. It was really satisfying was. Yes so can go check that out. It's on the interwebs on Youtube. It is yeah yeah and They they are also one of the companies that has Switched over to making hand sanitizer to give away in the community In in these are Cova Times. So good people. Yeah you're doing really great stuff. All right back to the history in eighteen seventy eight. The Tom Collins was a popular cocktail being served throughout the United States. Not long after that. The sugar was replaced by this. Gum Syrup and old. Tom Gin became. Yeah the base alcohol choice drinking. A Tom. Collins isn't very fashionable thing to do. I love that a hoax. Basically a hoax drink potentially became a very fashionable trink. Yeah yeah I I think. It's one of those nods of of like of like. Oh like I know what's going on. You know what's going on. Yeah also it's tasty so true in one thousand nine hundred Harry Johnson's bartender manual came with two types of Collins. The John Collins which was univer based and the Tom Collins Old Tom Gin based David a embry wrote in his nineteen forty eight work the fine art of mixing drinks quote eliminate made recharge water and spiked with Chin. Or some other liquor. Originally there only two brothers in the Collins Family Tom and John during recent years however numerous cousins have appeared on the scene. Pedro Pierre Sandy. Mike Jack the colonel several others whose first names have not yet been recorded. In the baptists mole registry experimentation. Found like Alan. I ran. I ran across a list of of what of what all of these names are supposed to mean. Let's see Colonel Collins was with Bourbon Jack was with a Colorado's is say that. Oh I don't know Oh. Gosh I'm Sandy. Collins would have been with Scotch Mike was with Irish whiskey. Oh Oh I get it. Oh that's offensive. Cool Pierre with Cognac. Brandy sometimes vodka collins would be called Joe Collins Cute Chocolates like I knew Joan Collins in my day and like most cocktails we talk about and these are cocktail hours The Collins went through a rough patch with a super suites pre-mixed concoction In the nineteen eighties. So many articles Forget now that whole period of time when instead of using fresh lemon or lime you would just use a package. Sour Mix Which does not necessarily taste like lemon or lime But certainly very sweet and will do a very different thing in a in a cocktail than Lemon and sugar so Yeah and and also in more recent history within the past ten years or so a number of distilleries because of the Tom Collins cocktail basically have gotten into producing old. Tom Style Jin's again Whereas for Basically since prohibition in America for sure although I'm your neighbor has been around this entire time but In the English speaking world I think the the sweeter old Tom Style of Jen's had been basically lost lost two time for a few decades. But but they're coming back. There's there's a few on the market now if you care to seek them out that's exciting. I Love Gin. I didn't use to but I think I was just having a as I've said before you know a lot of us in college are not having the best quality and no no. I thought that GIN GIN synonymous with like pine Sol for to me for a long time. Yes me as well and it was one of those things I genuinely and couldn't figure out I could get behind cheap too key like get behind. I didn't love it but it could get behind it. I could get behind. Cheap Vodka. Cheap Jen I couldn't so I'm very glad that that world has open to me. I also love the Pun opportunities with Jin because my one of my favorite stories that I wrote that my character is based on her name is genesis and she as Lauren knows likes to drink and her favorite drink is gin and it took me forever to arrive at that Metaphor for I. Don't WANNA get into it but it's it's a source of. She gets really irritated when people make fun of the fact that she ordered gin gin orders to and I made. I made the goblet of Ginger. Oh right that was. That was a good one. I since many shenanigans. I might've ultimately made things more difficult for myself. But that's what being a dungeons master is all about. That is certainly what you being engines master build a Diorama impossible for yourself. I can't wait we really. We really need to figure out how to do that. I'm so excited. Yes yes and perhaps we can have if not a Tom Collins. Some sort of Jin Collins Shrink. I don't know I don't have the only ingredient I don't have. Is the Soda Water? Yeah I've been meaning to pick up More Soda Water End. Yeah Yeah I'd maybe maybe the next time I venture to a liquor store. It'll it'll be GEN IT'LL BE. It's all coming up. Jim But all right. That's what we have to say about the cullens cocktails for today. It is and we do have a little bit more for you But I got one more. Quick break for word from our sponsor.

"During the break of kung fu moves in the video the video is a wiser in China is anybody's heather in like a cave yeah they're eating rice with their hands actually another flight and do their their their queue karate kick in Duke yeah well listen it when we take you to the Joan Jett poison Def Leppard Molly crucial live here now no he's he's coming I I don't want to come here come in well do I have Jones yes no or maybe a rocker Rossi Joan Jett them right to go see a show just got more credible in your bill a little pinky toll then killers got his entire being channel ahead but I would like to ask you yes quarterback question sure sure I'm glad that is a good topic yes let's get into cornerbacks cousins and garage below it feels like they might be the most second gas quarterbacks in the play I don't get to grow up close second guessing in the he's playing his best football of his short career right now up in of Seattle now nearly flawless performance eighteen to twenty two to the incomplete passes were drops three almost played a text book perfect game statistically did not throw an interception I think about the New Orleans came to these really high pressure road games were grapples performed at a very high level I think it turned it over in New Orleans either you say don't clutch he he has become a very close quarter back he's very cool in in a chaotic environment and I got a call this reminds me so much of Montana's I mean I'm not there is something to that I'm not think through that is is is flooded performance in talking about his demeanor in the hot on it has a lot to do with how your teammates perceive you right how do you handle yourself on the field when it's all going crazy either and Shannon I I am not the biggest cousins fan and I'm not just saying that because the Vikings are in town I I felt that way really since I mean for a few years now I don't see the crazy hype around Kirk cousins yes he played a good game in New Orleans I mean that one really big throw to get him down the goal line well outside of that I don't know I mean are you a cousins believe he doesn't strike fear in me I'll put it that way no but I would say that I don't think he's a slouch and I don't think that they're one dimensional with cook I mean I think he can he can make some plays I mean there's a reason why Shanahan wanted him I mean we all think that Shanahan's is genius and all that well he was his first choice if you stack up the numbers between grovel own cousins are almost identical thanks for this season yeah I mean there about seventy percent completion percentage about cousins maybe with the all everything on the line may be under pressure it may not be considered clutch we did pretty well there's not a metric for clients you know I mean yeah yeah so I don't know we'll see we'll see on Saturday I I just you know the reaction I got from a lot of friends of mine when when it was you know the when the Vikings be New Orleans like yes we the Vikings that's the opponent I wanted as like I said not so fast right everybody rag the Vikings are good they just went into the superb lecture Adam Schefter said this morning they just went into the super dome and beat the saints in the playoffs yeah that is really thirty and I really think a lot of that had to do with the Viking pass rush because you're re I could not get comfortable yeah did not have time to look around you some fumble at a critical point the fourth quarter your breeze did so yeah man I mean a big party keeping breeze off the scoreboard is is that pass rush and that's that's something that I'm gonna have to handle and and McGlinchey has been suspect at times in terms of pass rush great on the run block are in the running plays but sometimes he's got a pass protect he he can be beaten Gimme Brunskill on Brunskill every damn down I love that man sure all I say is I'm very excited to see what Shanahan is cook to be solved weeks yes to prepare for this game yeah and you know that he's going to have some then pull a rabbit out of his had something up his sleeve and he does all those all those plays were you got Emmanuel Sanders run in like ten yards backwards behind the line of scrimmage before so the snap just as a deterrent you know I yes I did I think Devo Samuel is it going to be a big big problem for the Vikings most third I I've been getting a Hyundai they better not start Coleman I'm tired of this silly business of you're gonna go with mustard go with Moster I don't know I could I I don't understand the Plano you makes a man I mean it's been a very effective formula you know you mix in some Tevin Coleman I think mostly it's become the kind the lead guy you let pre to pop a couple out there and he keeps defenses caught off balance hopefully keep him off balance we sudden Seattle it was again it was a mixture a lot of Moster he got to the ends of a breeder broken nice one often Coleman's out there occasionally to I'm okay with the mixture Shannon I I am and also is like you know Doug Collins at the bell cow for the forty Niners today darting doesn't really mean as much as like Derrick Henry a surgeon here is going to get you know thirty carries I understand the Derrick Henry sixty six carries in the last two games yeah he's working hard he had thirty four carries last week thirty four cramming twenty is a lot of Kerry's for him this guide thirty four real quick shifting to the game real quick do you guys think the Titans have a chance you again will rounds and not much of what you know is it tends point spread and I came ten points higher than that I would take the ten all take I would take a role because I think if anybody's a chance to beat him if they have the recipe which is run the ball run the ball run the ball people more jacks on the sidelines use the clock low scoring game hopefully the less you let more on the field the less damage you can do so I think the Titans have a chance yeah also I think mark Ingram's health is questionable and if he's on the field that they may not be able to do the same offensive scheme that they've been doing all year with Ingram on the field Jackson may not be able to run as much may not be able to do the option read that kind of stuff so and and don't sleep on the Titans defense and don't sleep on ten I feel like that's a lot of people is seen as kids praises right now that a kid but you don't I mean there's a lot of ten hell mania going on right now there is this is one of the reasons why I enjoyed fantasy football not just for that week to week competition but you get to follow players that you normally maybe wouldn't follow entails a guy that I kind of follow because I did the podcast with Adam Copeland all season long and man once he got the starting job for Mariota in Tennessee he might have been a top three if not the best quarterback in the NFL well and his efficiency was through the roof and if you watch some of the passes last week even he was on a on just throwing dimes uhhuh so I'm not saying I mean Baltimore Stevens is is stout in Baltimore it's gonna be a tough task but I I I wouldn't count the Titans out and I would definitely take the temple channel my color the only tighten fan I've ever met good guy here can well it's time to give the ball that there can be thirty four for more time if it's working it's working here can result killed takes like four guys to bring him down other great Derek's Tony if you've got any any good wearing Thomas recipes Derek and the dominos comes to mind and then you want to contribute you mentioned my urine Derek I did not have a good body name Derek what's his last name there they can really add up Derrick Williams and my best friend Derek not always not I don't really I'm afraid I'm there I could tell me yeah I'll be I'll this kid sure does Lila was.

"A year's good warm. Yes I got a matching set so that I could go around. Oh and keep. My ears isn't actually more one of those banned kind of right in hopes of the classic one one year. I think I got a little scarf. They're really concerned about making sure that the verb is properly dressed for outdoor play. Well they don't know where you live could be some very cold one year. I got Bourbon SOx one year. I got a maker's mark mistletoe. On a little thing that you could hang onto the top hop of your bottle like we're gonNA kiss your bottle and I took that and I hung it up in the House and I ambush people as they walked by. It gives you gave them a great big smoot really. Yeah yeah that would have people. Would that be the mailman is. It's mostly my hand but I'm getting better can't assured me one year. I got a gift boxes. That had a comedic comedic funny funny numerous labels on them because it was designed to hold a bottle of maker's mark. Oh and so it said that it was capped. Waits waits for your captain ribs. Ninety dumbbell that kind of thing right and and so I've been waiting. This came a little late this year and this I thought I would open it up on the air right. This is the maker's Mark Ambassador Gift this year and if you sign up with it's absolutely free. Oh and because I was ambassador for so long I have got a new business card from them. They give you a car that says it. You're you're a maker's mark embassador made out of wood. Wow when from the very barrels the Lakers mark does their stuff. It looks like somebody's been that your box there is. The cat has never never know. But it's it's a neat thing. It's a great promotion. It's a good product. I like maker's Mark Bourbon this year. There's nothing in there that is empty now now. The official maker's Mark Ambassador that that's their little slogan or that I don't know what that actually means their their tips. And so here's my little treat this here. It says dear ambassador as I watched the sun disappear over the hills of Star Hill or hill farm a little earlier each evening I find myself looking forward or to winter evening spent indoors with good friends and good Bourbon and I do the same thing except France. I just sit with the window chances. Slow down a bit something. We're pretty good at the London. Knights also made me appreciate the daylight we do have especially when I see the sunlight streaming through the beautiful new stained glass window. We had installed Dalton fermenting room earlier this year inspired by the spirit of maker's Mark Artists Peter acorn created this incredible work out of more than one thousand individually hand cut pieces of colored glass a pretty fitting tribute to our handmade bourbon. The asked me Peters designed features my family's S. I V. Seal Fountain every bottle of maker's mark but also incorporates operates all the colors of the distillery and thinking that this is probably a replica. oops blue for you are limestone. Filtered water yellow for our signature Mash Red Ferrari conic red wax and amber for the Bourbon itself. We're so pleased with this new addition to our distillery that we created a memento of the window. It's a gift to you is just are small and saying thank you for all the passionate support you bring to the makers brand throughout the year and if you're travelling you through Loretta we invite you to stop by the to the real thing in person. We'd love to welcome you to our in this season of light with warmth and gratitude so this check the film to remove. Okay no because I have a protective film on my hand from match but yeah isn't that Nice may go to send that out and I guess this is the picture of the real one here MHM and so I will maybe hang that in the window or maybe. I'll put it by the ambush mistletoe that I use for. I have a Chippendale. Nutcracker set the the Disney chip. Oh yeah under from down under Oh yeah that is a nice stained glass window and nope look cracker nutcracker. I put The earmuffs on Dale since I was a useful and they see that for this you could use it as a holiday ornaments more cocktail coaster. It would be afraid to use it as a cocktail could use it as a cocktail coast because you can put it in the window you can put it on your tiny dog. Let's good double extra large dog tag. You could use it as a hieroglyph key. Only if you're going to open up the well of the souls that would work maybe and you could use it as a tattoo stencil so there you go so telling everybody out there to become a maker's mark embassador. I think you will have a lot of fun with it as I have avs. And if he managed to get to Kentucky for you exactly all right off my show Intel show. We'll make it that let's have another drink now. We're GONNA try the Tom and Jerry. Now the tone Jerry. Yes back a ways. How far back does it go Well the goes back back to the eighteen twenties even though Jerry Thomas claimed this zone who did he yes he did okay. It was not as it was clearly available role in the years before he was born but makes it hard of invented. It was actually devised by British journalist. Pierce aged eighteen twenty S. He said it's very vague. Dog and Brandon around Sir Pot usually in a Mug or a bowl. Another method uses. AAC whites beaten stiff with yolks and sugar. Full back in and optionally that electric packed Jason once again struggling a the little bit of tap dance here apparently the drinks name. Now referenced Egan's book. He was a journalist. arpaio joy my aneurysm in reference to use books in London or this is the day and night scenes of Jerry. Hawthorn esquire and elegant friend Carinthian. Tom That's what we should've called this show and it was is actually turned into a stage. Play called Tom and Jerry or life in London which ran in eighteen twenty one whenever we get that. Put It on at the players. How how could it be to Shakespeare all the time? Sure in the park. Even we're not making Annette fresh better. No because it's quite a production to make it onto can tell sometimes require beaten egg whites on top up and yes. I told the story last episode when I tried to make it because David found the recipe in the back of Maclean's magazine and I said this sounds so cool. I'M GONNA try this but it's it's really. The key is to make the batter in such a way that when you add hot water to it you don't end up with floating scrambled eggs on. That's right so that takes a bit of work. which is what I it did end up with? So that's why I was so thrilled to find this product. Use It once or twice. Sit On the other eight jars ars that I bought a decade and there they are going to bring him tonight and give them to. You guys are friendship but but but yes so. This is a traitor. I haven't seen the trader VIC's Tom and Jerry around town at all been our local stores now. I'm all offering Berkshire Bill meal. So the Tom and Jerry. I mean if you're I mean. It looks like the same goop to make all the Oh hot buttered rum's but it's a little different isn't it. It's a little later in color and it's a little bit easier to handle. It's not quite as thick as the first stuff and I think if you were or to make like if you think about making batters pancake cookie something like that. It's you can pour. It says to heaping gene teaspoons at how many to. Oh He's precise twice as much as as the hot butter. Not Really. Because they called for a tablespoon though and I think three teaspoons or a tablespoon I would imagine the two heaping teaspoons tablespoons true. I should have just used the tablespoon dude take time. I was too busy trying to keep my teaspoons in remnant rematch. But yes it's easier to handle and yes look so much better than so sorry about last. But this is a pay back for a trader VIC's for many good years of drinks and Chinese items. Bongo soup soup. I should get to learn to make that again. She she did it to be under protest last time she liked it it just it sounds horrible. Yes waste ground oyster soup. Sound good with finish with spinach but at super tasty. They've asked me ways that. Hey I can want want me to bring you a couple of jars and I said I can't be trusted with a couple of jars but as it turns out we're GONNA use almost all of it here for our three thrill insurance available on the Internet Internet service and as a no matter how good it is. There's always something else to drink so well that's it. I'm not going to get all hung up. No we won't need it again until next winter. Yes hot drinks a hell of a good thing regardless you can make a lot of this stuff from scratch with a little bit of effort. Yes so what did it say on here and then to add I should have put everything in it. Two teaspoons off trader. Vic's Tom and Jerry batter or the batter that you made it home Announce of dark rum. Or half ounce of rum and brandy so we'll do the spice again to be fair and then hot boiling water dr or hot coffee or hot milk which I think one of the other ones I think the Hagans when tried to get coffee and mill rate. Well but we're using water just to defame. I've heard some talk to a hut CIDERS. Well Oh yes right. One of them did mention hot CIDER. Hot Okay this freshly boiled wadan eating so I don't know how much to put it here. Let's just put in her appropriate like that that we had switch. It's about the same. We should stand them all next week. Other than we know for sure and then we probably have to mix it up as well as the stirrup before getting into it That it looked pretty stirred to me shaken. Let's third look very strict. I should have got longer. Dave thinks of everything so it's agitate Besson's so what does what does wonder saying Dan does. He have a recipe in there for just just looking here. So this is I think this is the Jerry Thomas's recipe so it. It calls from five pounds of sugar. Trawling twelve eight Half a small glass of Jamaica wrong. It doesn't make any sense so I guess this is just to make the batter. Yes I think you're right because there was boos in the batter as well One and a half teaspoons of ground cinnamon one. Fte spoons of ground. Clothes and Lor- ground closed the half teaspoon of all space wakes by to the eggs till stiff yup and the oaks till they're thin mixed together of. That's where I went wrong in the folding together mixture because I didn't understand what I was trying to get our ad and so I think get had almost still kind of separating and like you need to be groupie deaths goofy so so when you make making the drink it's a tablespoon of the mixture now Two of Randy and fill the glass with boiling water Make Top Sometimes they do have brady half from mm-hmm or different rooms a right so that's a so. That's that made it kind of milky substance but it's all stirred up there. Yeah this is in color a lot lighter than any the ones we've had in all smell exactly like that stuff I made last time but we're reminiscent of egg Now I guess was their egg in the hot butter mixtures. We figure out that there was egg. There's certainly milken them but I don't think it's any no not not that we saw sorry about the clicking people clicking people clicking peace of mind the cooking people I did very close to the microphone. So it's pretty loud you buy. Oh and there we go to say garnish it with anything. Let me give it a little swizzle with my I feel like John with my very tiny sometimes and I'm looking forward to this last year it was last year. Let me ask us now. Step assode last year last. Call one I didn't I. I didn't get.

"Do you think we'll give it a try? You WanNA smell a day. It's not very sweet. It's very closely and now there was close jobs and I would be all right but displaces. Well Okay Salt Hit the salt contained milk and eggs nine scared for my life all right. That's it's no more than the other stuff right and just remember the color. It looks when I first used quite a bit more of a beige color. Pretty Dark Eh. This may be our final episode of gentleman of Iligan Leisure. So what's the history history on the Tom and Jerry Mix. It's I don't really know it's really old. It's really old because it shows up in Jerry Jerry Thomas. I think it shows up in Jerry. Thomas Recipe Book doesn't freight of well you'll loafers should assist you. Add the hot water what am I gonNA know Froth spilling to the floor. You'll know that it's you know he's mysterious thing. I couldn't see on there. Because it's so old that they didn't explain rebates yet state mandated yet two teaspoons of this stuff. Okay I'm just looking at Somebody making it but they just show it afterward so this just looks like one of these. My biggest concern is is is that it's going to be awful. We're going to use some expensive. I'll bring mine over. Oh that's nice of you. All right breakthroughs over if I say. I wish that I remember where I thought it was later. Bauge but it's been sealed up and kept in a dark room that's hardly been used for anything. Let let alone see this. This picture of it here shows the mixed. It's quite dark right. Okay well maybe we're okay so fortunately it's in the whole container so lucky to teaspoons of this stuff if you're watching at home as sort of like shoveling out Diarrhea but like I really like not regular when I clean the diaper. I don't know I've never cleaned a diaper. I'm not about to start. I haven't end usually a little bit more caramel colored. Okay now. That's what I was hoping. It was hoping it was going to be more to make it any more advertising. Sorry Generic Christmas everybody because it has milk and eggs but I thought that sugar would maybe to protect it and the darkness that I mentioned the darkness Chipinge dark it was all right. So let's that's my black pool so here at at least you get to take this home. Thank you very much. You're well you something. You didn't have to get me anything. It's not the very good. Oh well then winner winners so says the Mexican but the room when they're brandy Andy Pettitte Brandy Brandy seems more old school now. There's Tom and Jerry sets that you will sometimes see in antique stores. And they're very neat. uh-huh cocteau kingdom cells new ones. They sell new one based on the old one right. Wouldn't that be needed to have an old one. I saw an old one recently where they had that I see that Dave. You've Dave the movie. I think it wasn't the movie place. Whatever it's called film go sales? I think had a tom and Jerry set for sale. Really yes now look at this. This is me trying to stir murky goodness with perfectly good run. But I haven't had said to mix it first and then add the water. And so who is he. Who Am I to argue with the ghost of Victor Bergeford? And if you can find a trader Vic's go in there and ask them to make a Tom and Jerry and if they try to do something with a cat and a mouse yeah. They've misunderstood you. You're a traitor support. You might be at the Beira Museum. Libya Yeah hanna-barbera. After doing all of their garbage patch seventies you sort of thought on. They're not much of anything but back in the days they were a going concern of the MGM cartoons. And they did the Tom and Jerry originally and then back in the early seventies his they did in the Tom and Jerry grape show. Oh that would be great and this was Tom and Jerry were friends in it. I remember even though I was five it was like no.

"What? What he made it? Well, I know his comments because of meat is coming after him, whatever Trichet, but. You don't need to say that the marshawn Lynch. Why March didn't XP treated you didn't say that to marshawn Lynch about his words being used against? And when he was in buffalo. No, I did not say we went to college in cow. And how he knows that the media. Can we trust it like how come it's we're okay with some? We're okay with some people some athletes, especially being. Against the media in standing, we're okay with bell. Check for doing. What he doesn't immediate? We. Okay. We're Popovich for doing what he does to media. We're okay. Lebron with how he talks to the media. Lebron grabbed a purse to finals games go on walked out. And we're okay with that. We're okay with all that. But when it comes to Kennedy, we aren't. Why she's a bitch? That's why you hate it. Situation where he doesn't say anything and he's killed for it. Then he does say something, and he's his words, whatever or. It's for those wondering supposedly they were asking him or he wasn't speaking about what was happening with auto trade talks about New York and all that was going on with AD. And then they asked him about it. And he goes nothing to speak about because if I speak about it, you're gonna take my words, turn it around. And he said, I got no time for y'all. I wish they could go up to that podium and just be like. My name is this. I'm here. I'm making my parents didn't leave I'm sorry because no one was going to you after your bad day at work, or if you just got into an argument, which girl or whatever and then put it on my microphone different. Then all of a sudden millions of people are coming on. Correct. So I know people are taking what they got gainst homeboy, Katie when it comes to his whole trading situation. I know people mad that he can get traded. Oh, remember free agents? True. So he did what he did what your LeBron put in putting the play. So I'm okay with it. He's going to do next year. Katie kyri, eighty New York and Zion. Not it can't get. Yeah. They won't be able to. But I going somewhere somebody's going to LA not going. I think somebody's going. I think I think Katie my sign what LA I think you're going to be surprised. So speaking of that, do we think LeBron doing what he did for the all star game was a bit Chaz move. Yeah. I don't think be wrong. He chose the best team. And it just happened to be every single free agent outside of him. He chose the best thing last year. You have most of these guys on his team to when he was a Kevin nobody's having about it then because they weren't free agents. So another free agents as a problem yet. Because bro, you just got in trouble for tampering. You got in trouble MOVA because is out looking at you. Listen, LeBron is done your thirty five you ain't playing like two months because you're growing even when you are playing you need Rondo to hit the game winner. I think that was choice by the Lakers keep him out rest in his ass for playoffs. They make. No, that's not what they were doing. I'm sorry. That's not what they're doing. Speaking out what they're doing not getting eighty that didn't happen were you surprised about not surprised at all? You can get nobody. I think it was. Get somebody Mookie Blaylock too. Isn't he retired? He for. Oh. Yeah. No. They were killing genus saying genus pick bad players. I got to see it. I think being running team with Steph at the point Russ off the bench and be Jonah's. That's a team. It's just he picked a lot of east guys in the east guys. Their names don't rang like motherfuckers into west, right? They don't but have Russ's playing Paul George ball in there. Yeah. It's it's a prize Paul George doing Ballin. I thought he was a it took them to time. I feel like, but I don't know he's kind of like that coli tight where he does it quietly. But does it, you know, that's what I was gotta lazy. I speaking of doing it. Kyla Murray has decided he do. I don't know. I don't know. Because a lot of people supposedly boy, Stephen a Smith got Dwayne Haskins in front of him, which you know, I got some flack for that the sign bonus. Does you have to go back the four points on a million six point lead? I thought it was four some thought it was six six. He's gotta keep it to give it back. They said he got he got a forego. It. He got to give back. Okay. Okay. All right. But him saying that means it's real, right? Yeah. Giving four points million is nuts. Crazy. Yeah. It's listen play a sport. You know? He's he was right. When he said when you play football, you don't see or you don't get the excitement that you get from when you play baseball, and that's really shit. True. I'm sorry. You might get it. Bottom of the ninth two outs. But that's more. Like, I'm fillet that's more like anxiety. Like when you got a two minute drive. You know, that's real. That's real spit like. So I get it. And I'm I'm fine with it. But just understand that you probably making a bad decision when it comes to your body, especially when you're talking about your brain. You know, Cindy, I'm telling my kids play baseball take debates while money. Definitely. Yeah. Did it? Speaking of football, though. I saw I heard l l you know, they did better numbers on their debut. Then. Okay. See and Houston did. Yeah. That's nuts. Absolutely. Crazy. That's nuts. That kinda shows that America's football grow. I like the rules. You can't rush more than five. I didn't watch it. So tell me rules. You can't you can't rush more than five at a time. So you can only rush five players, and you can't do any like weird blitz. You can't do any some of those Johnson. No cannot do it. They let the news hit they do here. So the quarterback knows where the blitz always come from. So there's nothing special to hit an attack these guys that do hit that night, not nowhere that fucking all next one. I'm sorry. I'm to to win is the do. We know when they're playing I don't. But I'll definitely look it up. I think I might catch the next one because I'm interested in seeing anyone NFL run for money fucking definitely because that hit, bro. It was for those. I don't talk about his Google AL A F L foot AL f right football, Google AL football debut, and you're gonna see the first highlight. And that's the only one you gotta worry about. Actually, it was not he hit the dude used to be able to hit NFL. Yes. In the. Frank robinson. Rian this his Frank Thomas recipes does Frank Robinson Frank Robison, trailblazer baseball, first black major league manager. Jackie robinson. No, no, no, no, Frank. Rogers was the first black manager the first black player. Here's the first black player to actually manage team. So he became a manager. He played for the Orioles, and he also played for the reds. And he went MVP for both teams for play ever went two separate teams. Frank Robinson was a baller career average of two eighty nine go gloves. He was the one that hit the five hundred and seven home runs. I god. Dan, you make me feel. Wow. Not who Frank. Who Frank Frank Robinson was recipes? Frank Robinson rest in peace Frank rob O age as saying is his quote when he became when they offer him as a trailblazer. His cO was. Hey, here's his quote. Hey, hey, hey, hey smoke weed. The only reason I'm the first black manager is that was born black s to Kalyanam. I'm not superman. I'm not a miracle worker when do shit like that. It's true. But I hate it. Don't don't be little what it is that you've accomplished. I get it. I get being humble he saying that regardless of what would have happened. He would have been his spots. Correct. He just happens to be the first black one because he's black was Puerto Rican would have been I Puerto Rican. And if he's white no what it made a big deal about it 'cause they all wackily novice don't downplay. And Kareem hunt. We kinda spoke on that. So Cleveland one year team. They gotta team. It's just kinda weird because I thought they had great production from. Duke Johnson junior Nick Chubb. But this is better. They'll probably move Nick chopper winning focus and get something. But those people are running into two running backs now. Anyway, right. Correct. And he's suffered a suspension, right? Yes. He was only on the Commissioner's not active quick. So. All right. Anything else sports? Oh, oh Wilson. Did you see that shit? On the block. Yes. Yes. Stupid. Yes. I can't wait to becomes a mind. He he's not going to the Miami. Shut me onto the Knicks. The Knicks staus gifts and extent was traded three times last week. Wow. Just because you imagine every time you. Yeah. Do you have issue? Harrison Barnes getting trade it mid game. No, no business happens baseball every single day. Magic on your way to work working your shift and then on lunchtime. They go a by the way, listen you work for baseball all the time. They pull you out on the bottom of the fourth fifth. You can't get hurt. You just been traded run out the ankle. But that's what it is episode fifty one the green light this you boy, bring rain JR in a house. Don't forget, y'all. Get us up eight six zero six zero six three let us know. What's popping? "Uncle. Uncle Bill because he was a bartender was he? Yeah. I know that in the eighties. He I remember we went down when he was working at the the blarney stone to the blarney stone. The big eighty of the Blackstone he on this show. I don't know. I haven't figured out how guests on yet. None of chairs with us here. As far as jacker members. He started at the Newton, and I have heard his Newton in stories Dettori. The Dettori is Newton. While the leave the nickname for week. Yes. Okay. He's not happy about it. I thought he played that, sir. Laugh alarms out Wally not he's nam. He'd lived in Newton for a week. I know I mean, you could find the story. Google Patent oddball linked to it in the thing. He did not enjoy his time. No imagine living here, sir. You know? It was even worse and. When that guy was shot in the bar that was sort of the the beginning of the end of the Newton in I have on of Newton in story to that was very first place that I saw strippers and it was way too early in the day around five. Yeah. And they had a big screen TV for showing sports on the background and some poor girl was dancing. There was nobody in the place just me. And my loser friends, we're all for strippers. And for the first time, the background Mary. Tyler Moore was on the big screen. For all she did to power women and others pulled in front of her. The Newton in. But yeah, Bill started at the end in the end of the hotel Vancouver in the four seasons. Can you get us into those places? Looking ask him get a streak? That's an excellent be can think idea I this is twenty two. All right. So we're moving onto cocktail number. Thank you, Jack for the nation. And I hope you enjoyed our comments we Bush had you here. So we could really pin you down on it. Jack is a beer drinker. Yeah. I don't know if he would ever come up for beer cocktails. For that. 'cause I could figure I had at that the author, right? The Hawthorne a beer market. Dear you need the Streeter. Dump that ice out for you. Sit some in some Kinsey bidders, some vermouth. Yeah. No, I well. So Fred, tell us what what you have in store for us because you're making dream number two. To sit this later. No, sure. Delimit legally. Groceries are expensive now. Now, my hands are full of Igwe. Do you this? This is doing this. Because I thought we must have done whiskey sour. That's what you said. You thought. Done over. I can't prove it. Right. Even though you're the only guy with the list of all the drinks. We'd done. I've said that you guys. So it's not like, I'm the only I don't open every Email. I get. You should you should open every sorry to hear that. Sorry to hear that you know, you should open their emails me. I don't open every letter get. What if it's only your the contracts through my my strict? Filtering since. Yeah. But if you send me anything that's over like, a megabyte I have to delete it because there's no room on the server. It shouldn't be. But how is it on your server? That will on your computer. Yeah. I'm afraid of the fide. Download it onto my computer. It'll cause grievous bodily harm to my computer people world. Yeah. I know. But right now, if I did it they would be including the fifteen hundred unread emails that I have in my inbox six thousand ready you go. That's all fine. Yeah. So so anyway, yes. Anyway, we get here. I have a you think we've never done a whisky sour. I don't think I ever done. It was Howard. If we have to do it do other one. All right. And so people at home are also doing. Yeah. Viscous our or whiskey sounds really viscous our own good music. Anyway, Dake it on his the Boston version is that right? It's the Boston. So now since our real and another variation put a couple of spoonfuls of red wine in it becomes. Becomes the New York? Our wow, many sours. A why did we just do a sour episode actually a lot of we've done? Somebody kills her. Like summers Jensen. Let's of our episodes scour. The other reason I wanted to do this as I have one in Edmonton last week into jewel of the north. And and I heard ski sour at the bar the hotel bar drinking beers. And I thought I, you know, stand out sure class up of Tony. And it was. Just was something missing. So I don't know if the us bottled lemon, and there's no, wait. So I thought it was sort of but in Vegas couple years ago, I had one in random hotel there. It was like great film love it. So I know they can be great. So I think if you go right to the basics like we do often, there's this could be a great drink. So is this a Jerry Thomas recipe? Are we going back to the eighteen hundreds? Sure. And are you going out on the limb here in Las Vegas might be better than at Menton L? Well, depending on the circumstances. It's possible. Okay. Controversial comment. I know. A little bit. We'll see us better hockey team than Edmonton. You know, you're right. It just goes to show you, but I mean in fairness Vancouver doesn't even have a hockey team. So not that I know. Thing. I didn't bring. Boxing, gloves Qatar. Also have a metronome or a. Limited juicer. You know, who does have juicer me, really?

"There are five in the top category i growth there are an increasing number in the second third fourth and fifth classifications than so the emphasis really there is on the quality of the vine growing and the winemaking at the property so you go into one shop because he'll buy wine you ever by wine base that all these designations grown crew premier crude is really mean anything in terms of buying one the answer is yes you've got at least three places in the world where the crew system is really embedded champagne burgundy and bordeaux in all of these places if you're a winemaker in your an air to accrue designation you have every incentive to keep the quality of your product up on a par with that designation so yes it's something that consumers should pay attention to they're gonna notice the difference in the price typically as they move up but you have to remember that in some places you're gonna get to accrue level that you probably can't afford to drinking unless it's cold duck guan crew until we get the best of both world thanks david thank you chris that was wine expert stephen use this is no street radio i'm your host christopher kimball earlier this show i spoke with m harsher at a search for the perfect thomas recipe and made me wonder about authenticity you know after four days on the ground in tel aviv it became clear that there are many variations on the basic theme you can top hamas with boiled eggs paprika herbs altchek beazer spicy meet sauces and you can scoop it out of the ball with pita or onion or even the spoon what is authentic is the underlying concept that would be warm whipped and result so authenticity is really about the very soul of recipe.
