"No I found this next week interesting not because of its effect on veterans but because so many vets I know have some serious opinions about it on social media see I'm talking about the CEO of the USS Theodore Roosevelt you know the aircraft carrier that had the sailors aboard that had the coronavirus and describe for help and the fact that he was quickly relieved of his command after his cry for help went public and then there was the leaked audio of the secretary of the navy who flew all the way to go along just to get on the ship's one MC talk smack about captain crozier the commanding officers of like this and then there was the part of the story with the second half after all this was said and done resigned a lot of evolutions of this ongoing story in here to help us discuss them and show us what some of the vets are saying online is connecting vets dot com national security reporter Libby how Libby how's it going and how are you really good N. as noted there in the lead in yeah what's going on with this USS Theodore Roosevelt and share with me a little bit about what you've seen what you reported on this car and then a not so historical roller coasters since the very beginning so being here at the Theodore Roosevelt first recording coded nineteen cases on board problematic because everyone who's been on a ship no you can't social distance it's gonna spread quickly within a week captain Brett Cody closure has sent a letter to the department of the navy pleading for help he's asking that everyone except for ten percent of the crew be evacuated he's asking for testing he famously staying sailors don't want to die it was a rather dramatic letter four pages long and of course it was leaked to the media and the need to get their hands on it and it blows up a couple of days later acting secretary of the navy Thomas motley relieve crozier of dignity he leaves crozier of duty saying let him jump the chain of command he betrayed modeling himself and kind of created a media firestorm for the department of the navy and then monthly shows up on the USS Theodore Roosevelt talking a sailor three teenage system saying things like crozier was too stupid to be in charge of the ship and of course a sailor on board purportedly was recording that speech and also make that to the media and thanks to our friend and fellow veteran Paul's older I'm over at task and purpose we've got a clip of that idea

what my hope is governor Andrew Cuomo says they appear to be hitting a plateau in new virus cases in New York this is a projection it still depends on what we do New Jersey governor Phil Murphy state your home unless you absolutely need to go out or unless you're one of the essential workers CBS news update I'm Pam Coulter CBS news time one thirty two as we continue to navigate these unprecedented times KCBS is getting the answers to your questions about the corona virus pandemic every morning Monday through Friday at nine twenty we're doing an ask an expert segment each day will focus on a different aspect of the situation today we talked about do it yourself masks and face coverings KCBS the stand Bangor spoke with Dr Scott Siegel chairman of anesthesiology at Wake Forest Baptist health in North Carolina where he's launched a research project to study the effectiveness of materials used to make homemade masks I ordered a mask but it won't arrive for one to two weeks we are about to cut up a T. shirt she says he's my boyfriend's T. shirt of course is is that a good option well we're not sure T. shirts are not one thing the the the actual type of material probably makes a big difference the the generic advice that we've been giving folks is to take your fabric that you're intending to make the mask from and hold it up to a bright light or to the sun if you can easily see the light passing through the fabric and sort of illuminating the individual fibers it's probably not the best filtering material if it's a denser weave or a sticker yarn or thicker material and it blocks more that light we think it's probably going to be a better filter and that was true of the mass that we tested the ones that did a better job of that actually filtered small particles as well or even a little better than a traditional surgical mask so that's what we would recommend if you can get your hands on it okay I would say that something's better than nothing if you must venture out so I wouldn't discourage anyone from using an old T. shirt if that's all they can get their hands on what is the best material then in terms of commonly available materials that's what one of our listeners is asking so if you can get your hands on something that they call quilting cotton quilters cotton that tends to be a heavier weight higher grade cotton fabric it will have the characteristics we just discussed this would be different than the sort of simple printed cotton fabrics that you might find in a discount fabric store selling people know all about what this means you can also use a lower grade cotton on the outside and put a flannel inner layer that also performed really well but I it's really difficult to say use exactly the fabric that because not everyone has access to everything and unfortunately lots of fabric stores are closed with stay in home waters and so forth and so we recommend that people look for a fabric that might be around their home make sure that it does as best as possible with the flight test and then I have to add one other thing no mask is any good if you can't read through it so you've got to hold it up to your mouth and nose not for a breast or two but for several minutes and make sure you can actually breathe through it if the material is a great filter but you can't comfortably breathe through it you either won't wear it or you'll just breathe in and out through the sides and it will be less effective I think it's been make sure we get this right you said quilters cotton I happen to be married to a culture so I think I know what you're talking about some people here that they may be thinking about the batting that goes inside of a soon because you're talking about that the cotton material on the outside is that right that is right that is right now so not the the batting or stuffing it's the outer layers and people who quilt will tell you it's it's got a a heftier weeds you can feel the difference with your hand even I who knows very little about traffic prior to this week could learn to tell the difference and it it's it's relatively easy to do so I would ask a friend to sos if you need some advice okay what do you need to do to disinfect these things other best practices how often this is a wonderful question and I have to admit we don't know yet we do know that repeated washing is definitely changes the characteristics of fabrics you know this if you wash new clothes or new sheets that they feel different after that what we don't know yet is how many washings and under which conditions would degrade the quality of the filtering of the mass that's part of our investigation now the advice that I have been hearing is wash them like you would wash any other garment that you've worn close to your body like undergarments and so forth which probably means you wash them after a day's worth of wearing and use another one the next time the other thing to keep in mind is that more secure from your brass gets into the material and moisture makes any mask including a hospital grade surgical mask less effective over time it essentially allows the particles to pass more easily through the material so at the very least let the mask dry between Waring's either hang it up or do what we do in the hospital put it in a paper bag and let it dry not a plastic bag as I won't let the moisture escape but put it in a paper bag and let it dry for a few hours and then wear it again if you need but I probably watch it periodically in ordinary washing for now and if we get more information specifically guiding what the best practices are we will is that old phrase often used in a different context sunshine is the best disinfectant does that work in this endeavor not sure not sure certainly drying helps and putting it out in the sunshine is gonna make it dry faster I don't know whether the sunshine in and of itself actually has any effect we've been exploring in the hospital ways that we might reprocess medical grade masks using either older model light or the vapor of hydrogen peroxide these are not things that people should try at home of course but we are all learning a lot about something we never thought we'd even ask the question of which is how can we make a mask last longer by disinfecting it okay into that the next question asked exactly that question can I just bring it down with disinfectant and looking at my studio a can of Lysol right here is I ask you this question and let it dry well you got to be careful about that you know some of these harsher disinfectants are not made to be inhaled and you wouldn't the spring that stuff near your face and inhaling it and so you shouldn't put it on a mask and then try to breed and we don't know about what we would call in the medical field out gassing meaning if you spray the chemical on the clock if you then put it on a little while later are you gonna be breathing in potentially harmful chemicals so I'd be pretty cautious about that at this point I think we'd probably wrecked man just wash it in the washing machine the way you would any other or cough item you can listen to the entire interview with Dr Segal and read a transcript of the questions and answers at KCBS radio dot com and if you have a question you'd like to have answered please email us at ask us at KCBS
