"What are you obsessed with some my obsession. This week is a bit of a throwback. It's the australian sitcom kath and kim which is on net flicks. I actually watched it. At the beginning of the pandemic it originally came out in two thousand and two and it was a really big hit in australia and other places in the world never really in north america. What is what is it about. So catherine kim was created and is played by gina riley and jane turner to brilliant comedians. Their mom and daughter. It's in the suburbs of melbourne. And they spend a lot of time at the mall. They're very tacky varies self involved. The daughter in particular is a complete narcissist slide down. I have two cy. One hundred at the moment came actually. Very good for my. I should say the look. Soggy for but kick ma'am you choose okay. What do you mean shuki. Criticizing mom just sign you bad but the humor of the show is really in all of the small little details so for example. Cath the mom. It's her wedding day and her wedding. Shoes are very slippery so she puts a little velcro pads on the bottom. And you just. There's a scene where she's in her hotel room. And you just hear the shoe's on the carpet and the velcro of an of just all these little things. They have so many hilarious catch like they refer to hot guys. Like a great hunk of spunk. And i maybe marriage isn't tonight keith. Akina mary just the you. It's normal thing to do. I want to be different. You slow things we'd on team. It's just so outrageous in it. Sort of reminds me of the humor of absolutely fabulous and even elements of the comeback with lisa. Coup these comedies. That are all about the small details of these characters. Their catchphrases they're hicks. And i just love this idea of like the australian suburbs. Why because it's so funny and just it's not that wildly different from the suburbs here but there's something about that australian accent that everyone's been making fun of on social media lately especially i think it all kind of started nicole kidman and the way she says no more and i just there. The world of these characters is so ridiculous. But i just love spending time with them. There's nothing redeeming about these characters. They're not aspirational. They're pretty terrible. People but spending time with them feels good. I like that. What are you obsessed with the end of the world. I'm all of us. I think we're all watching the climate crisis unravel feeling very powerless. Some of us are joking about it. Some of us are in denial. Some of us are angry bunker billionaires or flying space you know like all of us are coping in different ways but recently unraveled on instagram. You know you had a very public. You were specific people having children during this time not only straits all children. I feel personally because people close to me in my life are expecting and i it's very self centered but i don't know how to deal with. I don't know how you should. I light them. Should i tell them they're going to have a future. I don't know how to cope with this. So i need emotional support because we know this is going to happen. We see signs. We see the fires we see. We feel. it's and some people were really privileged to be in montreal but some people are going through like really really really bad circumstances right now but i found this one climate scientists kimberly nicholas. She is from california. She teaches at a university in sweden. She released a book last spring called under the sky. We make which is basically a guide to cope with what we know is happening. You know the planet is warming. The climate is getting crazier and as much as i love a good. You know doom scrolling sash on instagram and doesn't serve any purpose To me that climate scientists is able to do her work which is way more important than my were and still be able to function and not be overwhelmed by the negative feelings and i think what is really healthy through. All of this break down for me. Was that speaking about my anxiety with the climate crisis people respond and a lot of people. Like i am terrified. I don't know what to do. And i think that is the next step. I think it's a global therapy that we need to do. We need to do like group. Therapy talk about it. Talk about the anxiety. I we're going to go through this and cope with this and you know lots of queers anxious so we can kind of really acknowledged this work and it's the work that we'll have to do over the next couple of years. So thank you kimberly. Nicholas misdoing the credits. Well get ready. Chosen families produced by me. Thomas leblanc and me trying to winter. Eight mcmahon edits and mixes the show mentality. "Act as a hobby new york and that's just not what happened. Welcome to a new episode of chosen family. I'm trying to winter. And then thomas leblanc. We are back from our little summer. Hiatus just in time to celebrate. Four years of this podcast. He's been married four years. That's incredible and they still have so much fun doing this. Show with you need to. Of course that was jake shears. You just heard the frontman of the legendary scissor sisters for anyone who may not know the scissor sisters were an electro pop meets glam. Rock group formed in new york city. Two thousand one. This is one of your biggest dream. Guests spurs started. You've always said that. Jake is one of your dream guests. What is the connection that you feel to him and his work. First of all there are twenty ten album night. Work is one of my favorite albums of all time. All genres bans artists. It's a very sexual thumping electronic disco. It's very me if you know me. It's kind of a sleazy record. Jacob bit sleazy. I'm a bit sleazy. So i love record. It means so much to me. And then jake to me is a trailblazer and in recent years. We've seen more queer representations music. And i've always been like jake did all of this fifteen years ago you know. There was a point where the sisters sisters was the biggest banned in the uk. And you know he played snl into dozen four and he was out and was very flamboyant. And i've always liked him. Of course i remember. I discovered the scissor sisters on this kylie minogue forum that i used to be on called say hey and most of the people on that forum were from the uk and this is your sisters definitely managed to achieve a certain amount of success in north america in the uk. They had the biggest selling album of two thousand four. They were the biggest sensation. I went and got their cd fell in love with them. They did eventually come and tour and candidate. I saw them when they were touring their second album with their mega hit single. I don't feel like dancing..
