"World service and we're coming to you live from our studios in London. I'm least to set a mistake. That's how British Cabinet Minister Michael Gold is No describing the use sudden decision. To impose vaccine export controls of the Northern Irish border. The European Union quickly reverse that step after was loudly condemned as a violation. The key clause in the E U's Brexit deal with Britain, in other words, that there would be no hard border on the island of Ireland, but this crisis isn't over yet. Northern Ireland's First minister, Arlene Foster, Vehemently criticized the U. What's absolutely incredible act of hostility towards those of us in Northern Ireland. It was nothing to do with making sure that Northern Ireland was in a peaceful state and all to do with the European Union's vaccine, embarrassment and mismanagement. The prime minister and I need to act very quickly to do with the real trade flows that are being disrupted between Great Britain and Northern Ireland. Arlene Foster with you more, but that vaccine makes management shortly. But Mrs Foster also called on the British government to abandon and replace the existing post Brexit protocol for Northern Ireland. Agreed with you up until now. We've been trying to deal with these issues on individual bases, but the protocol is unworkable. Let's be very clear about that, and we need to see it replaced. Because otherwise there is going to be real difficulties here in Northern Army, Alan Foster again with us get more details on this. Richard Morgan is the BBC's business report. Hurry Northen Ireland, he explained the background to this reaction. This Roy is really as a result of the European Union looking to trigger what is known as article 16, which is ah clause within the Brexit agreement, the Northern Ireland's protocol. That essentially change is hard up protocol works and what was going to happen here is that if article 16 had been triggered, it was to control the supply of vaccinations. Throw it the EU and there were real concerns essentially that vaccines arriving in the Republic of Ireland. Could basically get into great Britain using Northern Ireland as a backdoor because Northern Ireland is still part of the EU single market for goods and there would be no checks, but one article 16 would have done Is created a hard border on the island of Ireland when it comes to vaccines. The whole point of preventing that hard border was to protect the good Friday agreement and to protect the peace process on this island. So, of course, it has escalated as you mentioned beyond vaccines. With Arlene Foster, now, basically calling for replacement of the Northern Ireland Protocol. Is there any chance that that would happen? Well, I think unionists it's worth saying or absolutely furious. They view this as Brussels about to hit the nuclear option. They already here the Northern Ireland Protocol because it has essentially placed a border die in the Irish Sea, requiring goods arriving in Northern Ireland. From Great Britain to undergo some checks and processes to prevent those checks happening on the island of Ireland, where the border currently is, and I think, essentially unionist, they're saying, Well, look, what process was willing to do At the first sign of any trouble of any problems on this was to do with vaccines. What could happen down the line? I has this set a precedent and could we see Article 16 being triggered for anything on any concerns that arise on what uncertainty will this create for businesses and for Northern Ireland's economy Because we'd already bean been seeing pictures of empty shells and Northern Ireland Linds supermarkets, So this comes at a time where there already were growing trade issues. Yeah, Things haven't been smoothed over the last couple of weeks. As you say Supermarket shelves have bean empty. There have been issues around getting certain goods across the Irish Sea Jew to those new checks. We have retailers, well known high Street stores, who have simply stopped selling goods to Northern Ireland on the online retailer Amazon. It's currently drawing up a list of products that it will no longer offer to customers in Northern Ireland's and this is really concerned business on politicians, particularly unionist politicians, who have been calling on Boris Johnson, the British prime minister, and the U. K government. Trigger article 16 themselves in order to ease the supply chain issues on. Many are saying that if solutions aren't find that tree, a disruption is only going to get worse as we get further into this year. Richard Morgan, the BBC's business reporter in Northern Ireland. Well, Thomas Byrne is Arlen's minister for European affairs. Was he shocked what has happened with the EU Commission and the Irish border? I think we need to just step back. A bit from this. We had a situation with European Commission is very determined to ensure that it had sufficient supply of vaccine and the contractors, you know, complain to their contractual obligations. European Union Andre Commission decided to introduce an export restrictions. That was part of that, I think inadvertently, the commission decided to invoke article 16 of the Northern Ireland Protocol on that would have raised the specter Unless 31 really off a restriction on the border, Northern Ireland and I don't think there was any reality to it and any necessity for it and then out of the commission and following intervention from our prime minister, our T shirt in Ireland. Um, decided that suggested it wasn't necessary it all on In fact, frustration could work at without, just But doesn't it raise concern for you that yet again, whether it's London or Brussels? The Irish issue seemed to be afterthoughts. Well, I'm very glad that when the Irish government points that the seeming mistake that was made here there was rectified within hours before everybody went to bed, So I'm very glad that our concerns were received on there was intense discussions between the Irish government on the European Commission between the government and the British government, and indeed between the British government of the European Commission's where I think it's very good. And that we could all resolve this particular matter and then move on together. Then what do you make of Arlene Foster? The first minister's comments, said the protocol, the northern on critical just needs to be replaced for her. It's not closed. The purpose of the Northern island protocol is to ensure that there would be no hard border on the island of art. And so if we don't have the protocol, we then have a hard border. You then have guards guarding the heart border. And then you have trouble on criminality is this happened over the years, so we want to avoid that. We want to make the protocol work for every section of the community in Northern Ireland. And yes, there have been some teething troubles and with the protocol, but we're determined. We have been working over the last few weeks to fix them. And I know that And the U. K. Michael Gold has been talking with European Commission's marriage shock, which today that's very, very welcome, and they're committed to resolving the issues that do exist between Britain and Northern Ireland terms the operation of the cold calling these things. These are operational issues that I feel complete, resolved relatively easily, and I look forward to our government giving every possible assistance that we need to make sure this protocol works for everybody. It's the it's the alternative. That protocol is really unthinkable. The problem for Northern Ireland and are strong view is not the protocol. It is. In fact, breakfast on.

"But I've no doubt that this country can get ready on Daz. I say come out on world trade terms. Well, island has never made any pretends that it could cope easily, with Britain, leaving the European Union without a trade deal. UK is Unarguably, one of Ireland's biggest trading partners. It's also being one of its closest political allies. So how apprehensive is the government in Dublin? Faced with Boris Johnson's announcement that a no deal Brexit could well be on the cards. Thomas Byrne is the Irish minister for European affairs, and he spoke to me from Brussels. Just before we came on air well, we certainly welcome the fact that talks are proceeding at the moment. We believe that the deal is not just in Ireland's interest, but it's very much in Britain's interest and indeed in the interest whether European Union and our negotiators are in good faith Trying to put together a not just a trade deal, but a future relationship agreement between the U. S and Great Britain and we really believe that now is the time that everybody can be a winner, and that shouldn't be a game off one winner and one loser. We we all win if visited, and undoubtedly we all lose if there's no deal, But when Boris Johnson says there's a strong possibility of no deal, do you take him at his word? What I do, because we have a very difficult position the negotiations at the moment and that the issues are difficult and difficult to resolve. So there's no doubt about that. But I am confident, though. When people on both sides look about the consequence of no deal would be and that they would say life if you're Britain. I don't think you want the British economy to suffer unnecessarily next year. I think it would be the economic disaster for Britain. And certainly this is him in the European side. We're going to make sure that not only can we avoid that, but that we have, as has been described the negotiations, a level playing field going forward. United Kingdom is island third biggest export partner. I believe after the U. S and Belgium just spell it out. How damaging would no deal be for Ireland? Well, I suppose. In reality, a huge amount of agricultural product goes to great Britain on If there were tariffs and agricultural products, I think that would have a pretty devastating effect on our agricultural sector. But as well aside, it would have a devastating effect on British agriculture, too, because they export a huge amount of sheep, miss They also despite the debates were fishing and export a huge mental, their fish as well, eh, So those particular industries would be harmed very much in Britain, too. So as I said that we either talk and work out a way forward and we all win. Are. We finished the talks which I'm cause it's not happening on way lose if that happened, so so I think that incentive is there. I think for everybody to proceed with this as we speak. What is island doing to mitigate the impact of a no deal? Well, we put together a budget is a number of weeks ago, which was based on a no deal scenario. So we're already planning for that in our physical endeavors next year. We've been preparing really hard in terms of our sectors over the last few weeks and months to get him ready for deal or no deal because a huge amount of changes are calling anyway. As a result of Britain's decision not only to leave the European Union but to leave the single market. So we're trying to get our business is prepared for the customs checks and the added bureaucracy that that tails and does it cost to bash. One of our difficulties is we're not certain what the extent of preparation is. In Britain on We see that there may be potential traffic today's but not only that our British companies prepared not just for no deal, but for a deal which was still involve bureaucracy, customs checks, registrations and all of that, and we're concerned that may delay and cause problems for traders. Do you think there's an extent to which islands interests are being sacrificed by the EU here in order to protect the single market? Well, I can tell you straightaway that Ireland's economic interests are very much the line with the single market. That's how we attract industry and to our country and foreign investment. Your country it's how are innovators in Ireland feel that they have confidence out of the innovative develop products that are marketed to consult them to where we have standards set, so we're very much off the view that the single market is essential for us. The European Union has been very much with his youth at the position of Ireland was one of the obviously one of the worst affected countries and very much so when Michel Barnier and Horse of under Lights speak, and they also mention the position of Arnor That was Thomas Byrne, whose islands minister for European affairs. Now. Turkey, the United Arab Emirates and Indonesia are all customers buying Chinese corona virus vaccines and as the global race to stem the spread of the disease continues. China is moving fast to supply the world with affordable vaccines that fulfill all efficacy, safety and quality requirements. But the vaccines a yet to finish their late stage trials. Exactly Do we know about them? Apart from the fact that the Chinese state has brought state military and private sectors together in order to create them. John Cohen is a senior correspondent with Science magazine based in San Diego in the U. S. He's been researching China's vaccine efforts and he joins me welcome. John. China was actually the first wasn't it to begin clinical trials? Yeah, I think people overlook the fact that China that China started first. Even vaccinated people prior to starting clinical trials in late February, and there are five candidates of vaccine currently undergoing trials. Well. There are three that have whether four made by three companies that have reached the stage of efficacy trials, their arm or in the queue. The three that have advanced three companies that have advanced the furthest are can sign of State owned China National biotech Group and Sino Back on Is it a statement of political confidence in China or medical confidence that So many countries are lining up to use the vaccines. In fact, they've already had some of them delivered. Haven't they? Brazil, Mexico, Indonesia among them? Yeah, they're 14 countries that were involved in efficacy trials and you have to keep in mind that China stopped. It's epidemic. And they had to go abroad to do efficacy trials. They didn't have enough transmission within the country to test their vaccines. Metal So they cut deals around the world, in part because they had to. They couldn't figure out whether they're vaccines were safe and effective within China. And might these Chinese vaccines proved to be the world dominating ones when when vaccinators really get into their stride? Well, there's certainly capable of providing a lot of vaccine to the world. I don't know that any vaccine is going to dominate the end. My sense of this is this virus isn't that difficult to stop with the vaccine most everything thrown at it has worked. And it's going to be a question of how well they work how safe they are, and then how easy they are to transport how what they cost what side effects they have. I think there's going to be a very mixed market at the end of the day. And what are indications of the moment to answer all those questions, particularly efficacy? So China has yet to really report efficacy data we have had, you know, Efficacy data reported from Fizer, Bio and Tech. We've had data from Moderna. We've had the gun millions to Russia. We've had AstraZeneca Oxford report Efficacy data, The only report of efficacy data we have in China was from the United Arab Emirates. Their Ministry of Health put out a press release two days ago. It was really pretty thin. Didn't say all that much. And the company itself. It's C N B G hasn't confirmed things and they haven't been answering. Press enquiries. The New York Times reported that they hung up on their reporter and they're not answering my enquiries. So a lot of this it requires transparency and we've been struggling with each of these companies. I think to really be as transparent as possible. Many thanks. John Cohen, senior correspondent with Science magazine in the U. S. How the Cuban government is in open conflict with the island's independent artists, following a recent protest outside the Culture Ministry in solidarity with a group of dissident artists on hunger strike Known as the Sandy Cedrone movement. So see how your wife for me? And I have what what we did was we transferred? We transferred to another company has explained last Saturday. We're at home side financial right now. It turns out we started with our group team hockberg and a group that decided to join us ADEMA walkie, Jeff and Brian displays decided that homeside was a better opportunity for them than the company that is acquiring Perl mortgage. So they they made they decided as grown men to make a decision to join this company, and then a number of other people and support staff all last week this past week resigned and joined our team, so we have over seventy individuals we have a closing manager and a a condo a condo department. The home side doesn't have a condo department to get condos approved which is a pretty big deal. If you're doing you're doing mortgages and Chicago, which is a huge kind of market, and they have their in thirty plus states. So Karen, our condo Queen decided to resign from Pearl and join homeside because there was a better option felt it was a better opportunity for her and her family, so we're lucky to have her. So she's. Gonna head up the entire condo department for homeside financial because they don't have one. So it's an unbelievable opportunity for her to do that from Chicago. And. Yeah, so it's been a good run. We had training Tuesday Wednesday Thursday. So these are the following team hockberg loan officers. One of our loan authors started at training on Tuesday and decided it wasn't for him. So we wish Matt the best of luck. What's going on lower rates, better technology, more support with on on VA loans? They offer alone. Huge. Okay. The end is good for you guys to all you guys in here. They offer a VA construction to permanent loan. I've been doing this for eighteen years. And I have yet to find a lender that will do a V A. The FHA does them, but VA doesn't do them because you need some type of certificate or you need an end certificate and a lot of times. That's not there when the loan is ready to close. I don't know what all the details are, but this is one of the few lenders that I've ever come across that we're going to be able to help veterans do construction in their home with the VA loan, especially all the veterans that are now coming home that with less body parts that they see that they left with and need some type of ramps and and. Bathroom. Thank you. Eighty that's remodeler, speaking true. Got gotta have certain countertop levels in and out of bathrooms. You know, these men. Stores have to be wider to accommodate wheelchairs thirty six inches. All of this stuff. We now have access to liquidity and loan programs that we did not have that approach. And I'll tell you what a lot of other companies in the mortgage industry don't have access to that loan program. So this is like when I heard that I'm like awesome. These guys jumped to the top of the list of of.
