"Unmistakable voice Thom Yorke with his Radiohead bandmates backing him up there high and dry from their album the band's it's a big early hit the put the band right at the center of the music scene in the nineties over the past thirty years they've wandered far from that early sound that is especially true for Thom Yorke this year he put out an adventurous solo album is called animal we also launched a big solo tour when he was in Montreal he agreed to come in the studio they're pretty rare in candid interview about his complicated feelings about nostalgia the early days of radio head how he feels a about watching another iconic band the rolling stones tour their oldest and best love material they started out chatting about what he's up to right now touring as a solo act without Radiohead behind him on stage this is Tom power with Thom Yorke it's taken me a long time to get used to it the people really honest I think it is it was one of those things doesn't experiment origine just as a sort of electronic DJ show only doing sort of kind of rave type gigs and we realized after awhile that that the playing to a bunch of guys in ecstasy causing goes next he was possibly the best way to get a point across given what else was going on so he sold moved into the axes and then it became something quite different did the main the main thing for me is is a not having a live band behind me and having machinery being operated by Nigel and myself hi enteric is is old and I sort of came about as certain way instead of I have enjoyed the the messing with the expectations of what the audience might expect me to be doing because I no longer have a guitar on my neck cool or anything so sense because unwholesome is that I mean if it with with with respect your audience and and what they were going through yeah right what what what what a trip that must have been you know to me to go from playing in a beacon figurine is a big stadiums to going on stage in front of gonna sketched out team to to when they're learning in there it was yet this is a moment of confusion going on on pas there was this in spectacular moments as well there was one where we came on stage for miles Houston's and the bass bins were under direct and to the stage and the computer the suffering the main loop system just flew off its stand in the audience at the same time I think as I was berating someone with luminous tambourine wouldn't stop shaking you know that was there's been some of nights I think I think I had a fever dream like that when are you doing that you mentioned Nigel their Nigel Godrich and you're gone he's on the store with you I mean of course you know if folks who are fans of Radiohead bill no I'm a sort of an unofficial member of the band the first time you met Nigel what he was the picking up pieces up low the time during the band's session so we met him let me working John lackey and he was a prince a machine and he was like a renowned experienced engineer rex studios we just had to offer them straight away the way you a worked very fast and he just made things happen the first thing he did was he a week and one of the money say will announced we want to build our own studio and so he went and constructed this this portable studio system that we used to do like a computer I wanna play but in new music from from the new record this is twist twist from time York's new album and he joins me right now from I CBC studio Montreal in anticipation of his shows coming up this week in Canada it be you know besides throwing brightly lit can Camarena the audience in the moment of that okay what is that now I was raised on someone else for shaking it while I was gonna comes right now for god's sake on animal that's not you know about it and maybe I should do the other women you know I'll take ten percent would be I want to talk to you a little bit about your voice I had a realization listening to your record that you know I've been really listening to your voice for very very long time and I I'm I'm curious about it did your voice always work the way you wanted to or or over that process I think I only started to get comfortable with my voice towards the end of recording okay computer if it you know up until that I was struggling with trying to be trying to sort of not get engaged in the V. emotional what you're doing that might sound a bit daft but I would get and get really nervous when I had to do takes you know so I had the old relationship with in my voice were I had a a concept of what it would be and it was never that and so because I wasn't very confident myself a bit I well I need to keep trying until it's that and get really out of it and then try and sing and then wonder why didn't work you know all this kind of stuff and the reason I try to get out of it is because I wanted to get into his own man but in fact you know this this this the wasted time of that stuff it because it is about being in the moment and nothing discovered sh so soon off that record when he started doing today that being in the moment and singing is exactly the point regardless of the warts and all if you if you have that right with it is it's gonna it's gonna it's gonna work can answer just relaxing with your own identity are you a vocal rest person how do you take care of it on the road her take care of on the road I the I'm a good boy and a woman and I won't down and I and I trunk and struggle I guess I'm I'm always nowadays well that's the thing I'm always curious about in the past Hey Chris yeah I was I spoke to fleas one time and he he he he said I said what's the backstage of the virtually peppers yes I've been there a lot yeah he said it's a lot more brown rice and tea that perhaps we were used to in the nineties it's it's yeah it's quite a place I mean what I've told with him and I got used to talking to him while he's doing his scales gonna be a lot like let out on the base simply block like yeah but it is it is a bit is a different backstage situation investing from when you guys first Atari yeah the backstage we will see can I remember that far back backstage was like do a scene from the early days as a weapon figured out that that you should get rid of people backstage and then we went the other way and so then we discovered we should get rid of people and then that was it was like a ghost ghost town by state there was nobody to leave enough the shows on them now it's kind of a bit relaxed it's it's not crazy it was you know we used to it I am Michael unbeaten talking to Michael an inmate he would say cogon need to grab a glass of wine it just will conduct so it isn't it doesn't make Jagger run backwards on a treadmill or something like that it is a low it does a lot what that guy he's he's he's extremely skinny and if they're not not what impressed not so the stones they did a moment was that record they did the whole record them in the founder in LA sticky fingers back to back the whole thing while he was absolutely amazing like in a small club yeah it was amazing I would I was really surprised how great it because it's it's a funny thing you know because I I I my my my my uncle had a ticket to go see the rolling stones in Indianapolis I flew down to see him and it was at the speedway you know with this gigantic sort of mammoth thing that I'm really not used to in Canada and it was great but I could think to myself was I wonder what this would be like at the I'm a combo in Toronto what would this be like with a hundred seventy five people are I think it meant for that you know then thing was distracted with Keith teeth what were they looking when the time is muscle what this is a white yeah I think two of them are very real to I think it's you know are you with this ticket is a conversation is happening right now at least in Canada I'm it's I'm sure it's happening in the U. K. as well you know are around you know artists speaking up about moments our society right now you know be a climate change people he in your case it may maybe brexit or climate change you know and and the rolling look for sure I I I I see you as someone who has never waned from speaking out about things I'm I'm wondering how you see the role of an artist in time like this well I guess everybody's angry you know and everybody's polarizing so my tendency is to get too angry to vitriolic about these things so I've tried to take a step back probably not the very well I see it on Twitter I see you're you're you know if your **** stuff going on yeah but I mean I think that the I read a lot I I have been obsessed with his wound the stuff going on behind this force is moving around behind the scenes that to me a the this is the same in in America the same in Britain and they will Khan help feeling that the reason the way of being distracted with a couple of clowns on either side is because directly because that certain people wanted us to be focused on our end of the concept of of our own self destruction rather than looking out would and thinking there's a much bigger problem here you know we're arguing about who said what to whom while I sheets and melting in while the alarm bells going off and I can't help thinking that that's deliberate okay I come to the conclusion that this this is not happen by accident I I really don't believe it's not by accident and I think probably in a year's time we'll be looking back at this period and hopefully these particular monkeys will be providing the cages I will be so.

Some i'm working on this new joke and like so the three i three parts are done and they're good but then at the end i haven't figured figured out how to finish it and it's real bleak and i go that last part just for me a ends with like janis joplin choking on her own vomit so we're going to have to the punch that up that's for sure from the part that i find the funny i know which is that's the disconnect. Take the comedian and the i mean if something ends in the words like death vomit suicide. I die laughing and got up a friend. There's is he flip the body. You start back me. I mean wow thank you thank you. You're always on my god all right guys i and then like we are not facts that everyone knows that like that. If someone's like highly on drugs gotta flip them over so they don't choke on their own vomit. I thought this was general knowledge. I think it is i i found everybody's not hilarious to people people. Just go that. I think people really it's funny to us but it's like other people blur like jesus christ. The thing is i think they weren't really like remembering but then i was like i was like we also have breaking bad and then they laughed so i had just compare it to another time that they saw someone not flip. Someone's body spoiler food bring in pop culture reference. It'll fuck enlightening. Lightness shit up well. Yeah i mean i do too with tourists. Which is something that it's a it's a visual piece that is on net flicks right now <hes> it's. Tom york's new album <hes> thom yorke from radiohead and <hes> if you don't listen to radiohead i that's fine eh. It's fine if threatened start. Threatening people know it's fine if you don't because here's the thing i i listened to radiohead so much in high school will and college that i i had to stop because when you listen to radiohead in the morning like that's your day tone it sets a tone that you're not going going to be and it doesn't it's not a social doesn't put you in a place you go out in the world and just accept whatever you see yeah i i listened to pop music in the day and it's not necessarily the you know always my favorite or the best kind of music in my opinion but it's it's the one that sets me on the right track right yeah well. It allows you to listen. The world is a mediocre place and pop. Music is the perfect thing to absorb that you know what i mean. It sounds thank you find it enjoyable and and it's like it has its own value. Oh all of course i am a big defender of pop music because it lightens the load right lightens load for sure if you listen to radiohead and that's like what you're into oh cool. It's just gonna make it hard for you to interact with your co workers right okay. It's all about like distortion <hes> existential unsual dread.

"So this latest batch of rock and Roll Hall of fame is a weird one. Indeed, the cure got in one of my all time favorite bands that I still don't think belongs in the rock and Roll Hall of fame. But I'll take it. And radio had the reason is is news is because Radiohead. Fronted by Thom Yorke said he will not attend the rock hall abduction, which I think is awesome. That is it's the same reason. Radiohead does not play the song creep. They're not in his game for mass appeal. They're not in this game to be adored or understood by the public. They don't need to be in the rock and Roll Hall of fame. Well, I mean, they were voted in. Well, they don't want to you know, when you're at a job, and they sit you down, and they go do you really want to be here? And if you hesitate they fire you, yeah. It doesn't seem like they want to be in the rock and Roll Hall of fame. They said, they don't really understand it. Right. So just let somebody else who really wants to get in there. That doesn't work that way. I know it does. But it, but it should just watching video now bucco Bruce arriving to one buck place and shaking hands and kissing babies do jobs talking trash about Johnson. He's gets a real bad vibe for Bruce Arians. Fortunately, they're showing all the employees waiting for him, and Bruce Arians is wandering through a Chick-fil-A shaking, the employee's hands. Really strange. I've got concerns after seeing the video of him. Tell the story of how when he was younger. He drank paint twice the first time, he thought it was milk. And then he had to go to the stomach you had to go to the hospital get a stomach pump. And then just a little while after that he saw some green paint. He thought it was mint chocolate chip ice cream. And he drank that, and then he had to go back to the hospital. So I've got my concerns well and drink paint. And we saw what happened to him. Joints cold busted release and just before that music from psych magic the trip was a single that came out a little bit earlier this year, one of the great songs of two thousand eighteen. Tom York in the set from the soundtrack that's of song called has ended one of the handful tracks that Thom Yorke sings on much of it kind of instrumental score music from the film that he did this year. But I like that one right there with his vocals has ended music for Tom York ice age in the set with a song called balm of Gilead. And we started everything off with something from the Rolling Stones. This is an album that as of the sixth of December. So in a couple of days this is going to Mark the fiftieth anniversary of the release of this landmark album. Beggars banquet a favorite Rolling Stones record. And one of the I would argue one of the great singles from the band is what we played from that album street fighting man. Fantastic. That just a perfect song, basically that one. "That's a great warrior. You're actually famous in that village in tribe because you know the warrior, right? Yes. If I'm going to reproduce on a cellular level, I want to reproduce that guy because he's a motherfucking alpha and I want to make sure my kids and also to sustain the species. That's very good. So if you know the offer, you must have some of that coolness. You must know of it and like it's a fighting dog. That's the mother pit bull of the champion, like not the champion. It should the same jeans and bloodline for the same kennel or whatever. That's a really good take. But yeah, also taught. So you were right also, and that's. Yeah, there's a, yeah, there's a, that's a really good take. And one of the things from this book, you know, people say. Say, oh, you know, you put so much personal stuff in here and I, you know, really, it's a, it's a, it's you get to follow the life cycle of fame, and if you had a room, a crowd of people, I could throw a rock and hit somebody going to have very similar experiences to me. So the view the reader rather can rest assured that after you've read this book, you viscerally understand emotionally understand what the whole the whole life cycle of fan from the beginning. And then the equilibrium and then the end feels like, but then the an end, one of the things that I'm hoping is is what's happening right here is I want to hear people's take on fame because I feel like fame for so long at least at least very much. So since two thousand has become this ingredient in our society, this like matter of fact, that's put on this high level in a matter of fact way and, and it shouldn't be. And it should be, I feel brought into perspective, and I feel like talking about it like this and you know, that's something I really want to know from the readers, and I've had some really great responses on Twitter so far people's takes on the subject at all, not necessarily what they think of my about my book, but just what do they think on the topic. So I'm glad to hear your session. I've ever been aware of like this and you're not defending. Like bratty behavior by other people or yourself. I mean, I'm not saying you ever had any, but you're not going like, hey, leave us alone like Thom Yorke Radiohead or Kirk Oban like I never wanted to be famous like you made fucking flyers. You wanted people to come see you. So you could do more to bigger crowds. That's that's what happens. There's no way you didn't think that forward. It's in your own biography, your own diaries, so, but you know, they're hand you're, I think you're the of you think you're the fire because you loved acting your fifteen. Sixteen, you go. All I get to put this in this family ties container. And then the Cosby show's on before you in cheers, is after you like my sister's asked what it would famous like you, you could literally, there's an, I remember the kangaroo from that episode. Started kidding. Oh, I remember that it's seared into my brain because I'm at home. I'm comfortable on my. It's a home game for me. The whole TV thing is rent..
