James washington to catch the steelers while received some of the best in the business with run out the catch all been has to get the ball in their hands. They know exactly what to do with it. Fourteen nothing pittsburgh. Meanwhile from the comeback player of the year alex smith. That's the last thing we want to see bleeding profusely after being cleared. It's the other leg to quick nap. Critical moment final seconds of the first half of the clock. Ticking down. Alex smith getting sacked on a third-down play. No timeouts left the trying to run the field goal team out but the clock is going to be stopped by the officials and this may have been sneaky from alex smith. this sneaky. good better and move by. Alex realized that he doesn't have any time outs left and if they used the ball in play to probably not going to be able to get the feel law so retards off with the football. They got to stop the clock in the points. Before the you take a look. Ron rivera's yelling everybody's yelling but we're going to show it to you here. Watch alex smith again. Fourteen three at the have a little momentum shift now oakland drive of the third smith. Watch cam simms. This might have been the biggest play for the washington football team in this game. And don't just take my word for mike. Tomlin talked about this after the game. Felt like he was a real turning point thirty yards on the catch and run a big first down in that would lead to this. How about logan thomas to the one converted quarterback out of college logan thomas with some great hands being able to get down to the one he's really turned into a professional title. They were punching in premier. So fourteen steelers fourth quarter at seventeen ten at smith. It's thomas wide open worldwide. That's a busted covers right there but don't fault the waas to football team alex smith to taking advantage of the miscues by the steelers. So we're all even now the steelers of a fourth and one on the twenty eighth. They're kick chris. Boswell is out the rookie. Matt right is there. And so mike tomlin elects to go for it a throw was to anthony mcfarland his miscue there and the washington football team takes over on downs and that leads to. This happened this catch. This is a big time catch right here by camps and being able to survive the ground one handed grab pressure situation. Can't do it any better than that. That's a big first down later in the drive. Dustin hopkins from forty five away at the first looks. It's going to hook but then it hangs and it's good to washington up twenty two seventeen but mike tomlin had used his timeouts. Well they will going to have plenty of time. But there's no time when this happens a no deflections your the game washington. Football team's defensive line. From Rugby In Australia To Football In Philadelphia
"Bo. When we're watching games, we sometimes forget to pay attention to the offense of Lineman, but you wrote about a play against the Ravens recently where Jordan my Lada really put himself into the center of the action. Can you take us through what happened on that play? It was sort of a typical zone read up the Eagles thirty yard. Carson wentz is in the shotgun and he has the decision as to whether to hand off the Mile Sanders or hold the ball and run himself. So that's what he does. wets keeps it on a read option he'll get out to the thirty five hour live Paul, loose ball, the ravens every covered it, and he fumbles the ball. The ball POPs out and a ravens defender picks it up the Safety Chuck Clark an se starts to run from out of nowhere comes Jordan, my Lana, this six, foot, eight, three, hundred, forty, five, pound guy probably even heavier than that, and it is as if he is. Taking over all of his training from his youth he just attacks Chuck Clark like launches into the air and in the same motion swings his left arm around and pinpoints punches the ball out, and it just shoots into the air and it ends up landing at a balance. So the Ravens keep the ball anyway but to see a left tackle do something. So athletic was definitely eye opening. Jordan. My Lada is a powerhouse in front of the microphone as well. where. Does MY PASSION FOR MUSIC COMING FROM? So he says it like everything else in his life I sort of comes from his family, a big family and Kiss. One Gill he ever cut new family I and everything that I am staying. Going I, get it from my family. So He is the child of two Simone immigrants they grew up. He was the fourth of five children in a suburb of Sydney called Bankstown and he says, you know everybody in Samoan Culture is talented in music in some way, and so he is very good on guitar. And it's true like he's got a really beautiful. You know he was never despite how big he would get. He was never sort of the biggest kid growing up but around great seven as he calls it, he starts just shooting up and it never stops and this was a very sports friendly family, but rugby league was their passion. So He's playing rugby league and all of a sudden you know it looks like he's sort of the Danny Monteverde of what's going on in Rugby League Heavy like this guy. Check his Team. Running jerk. Everybody's asking for his birth certificate like there's no way. This guy can be fourteen years old fifteen years old and this becomes the running joke. Every time he's playing with his team. We fast forward a couple of years. He's seventeen years old. He's on his rise as a rugby player. There's this scary moment one day at practice. Take us through what happened. He's playing four I guess what amounts to the youth team or the be level team the practice squad sort of for his local rugby league team in Bankstown and he collapses one day. And everybody's sort of just chalked it up to you know this guy's too big too unfit, and then a couple of weeks later it happens again and they sent him straight to the hospital and immediately you know the doctors are like we need to get you in for emergency surgery. There's an issue with his heart. And over the course of about a year and a half, he ends up having to separate heart surgeries where he has a hard abrasion and both the upper and lower chamber of his heart and at that point, the idea of even continuing to play sports he thought that that was probably over. Once the second surgery was over the doctors said, he was totally fine. He was ready to go. You know once he was recovered from that. So shortly thereafter, he gets back into playing rugby league and he's sort of on the rise. But at the same time, he has to work a part time job he's doing. Jobs. So he's starting to get a little bit frustrated and a agents toss out. The idea of would you be interested in trying different sport trying to play in the NFL his agents send his highlight video to the international pathway program for the NFL and the NFL has this program where every year about four to six or seven players from around the world are given the opportunity to work out for NFL teams and it up to La when they were. When I? I. Didn't know this for. A week in La, that's when I really like. Fine Tree and What I WANNA do the hurdle from there is he has to convince his family and his family is not about it at all and as Jordan describes it, in Samoan Culture what the elders say go. So it's basically the end of the conversation
Bills rally to beat Rams 35-32 after blowing 25-point lead
"The bills. Blew a twenty five point lead on Sunday and lived to tell the tale. The bills happily received the gift of questionable Pi call on fourth down. Then won the game on a Josh Allen to Tyler. Crop Hook up with fifteen seconds to play final score thirty, five, thirty, two. Wow Greg the rams came this close to a comeback for the ages. Only let victory slip away. They left too much time on the clock. When you come back from twenty three, you got a time that final touchdown just to go to overtime and then win the coin flip, which is probably the only way. The Rams Defense was GONNA get a stop in a big moment here because Josh Allen. Did. It all in this game in terms of the rollercoaster, the the whole experience they had nine possession and they and they scored five touchdowns. So I don't want to hear anything about the bills offense being in any way let down now he helped set up the comeback with a couple of turnovers, one of which came on a very questionable call, but was also a terrible throw by Alan. So yeah, he was at some fall Aaron Donald took over the game as Donald Does but my big takeaway is that the bills are an offensive team you WANNA get on part of their team. For blowing the lead, get on the defense I I look at them more as a team. That's GonNa make mistakes offensively as we saw here and there but that had to third and twenty three situations with the game on the line and they wound up converting the both they got one into a four, thousand nine. They got that questionable call as you mentioned Dan and and if they didn't get it, we'd be talking about how they blew this game but I still. As. A global view. Take a look at this bills team in think this offense is really dangerous and Alan's going to have some ups and downs but the conversion that they've had into an offense that can score over thirty regularly is massive and they are gonna be a tough team to beat when that's the case One thing stuck out to me was the uproar over the the controversial call at the end of the game and to be honest I caught a lot of this game. The only reason the rams were in the game was because of a bad call in their favour in which there was a simultaneous possession interception, which was clearly caught by the offensive player, and then once they hit the ground was wrestled out of his hands by the defensive player was a horrible call and they tried to defend it afterwards, our river on did and. It didn't make any sense when he tried to defend it either terrible throw though two and they gave up four touchdowns in four possessions very quickly. I think it's giving the rams a little too little credit's saying that's the only reason. It was definitely a turning point but it was a bad decision by Alan and more more to the point the rams offense started cooking. In the third and fourth quarters I hated that call. It's funny. We just started this show talking about how referees are keeping the flags in their pockets that to me at the end of the game there and I I know L. River on got behind his boy there. But that seemed very ticky tack with the game on the line to call that. But you know at that happens ultimately I think if you're the rams. Yeah. You're smarting from that call but also there are two third in forever's that they had right the bill. And all you gotTa do is make stop and that was you know that was to opportunities they had and they and they let it go by the boards and that is a credit to Allen I didn't get a chance to see this game. So I can't really say too much about it other than. His ability to just move this team up and down the field for three straight weeks, he is passed for three hundred yards. In, three straight weeks and they are averaging I believe four hundred and thirty yards. Total yards per game and thirty one points per game through three weeks, which is obviously franchise records across the board. There's something special happening with his offer.
Former Player and Agent Donald Dell
"Everyone John Wartime here is this week's sports illustrated? Tennis podcast is also the first week of Wimbledon. He says wistfully our guest this week. Is Donald Dell? Donald is a former player a promoter broadcaster at agent. He's worn many hats, not unlike Bartholomew Cubans. He is also worn many at once. Donald is still force in tennis. He wrote an op Ed recently in the Washington Post, about the prospect of combining the men's and women's tours, so we talk about that. We talked about where tennis is right now, and as a bonus, Donald signed Michael Jordan out of North Carolina and especially after last dance. We talk about Michael Jordan so some non tennis bonus coverage on Michael Jordan and a lot of good tennis. Talk here's Donald Dell. Appreciate you doing. How are you doing? I'm doing fine We've been lucky I've been home since about March fifteenth, but my two daughters, their husbands, and our two grandchildren, five and seven are about thirty yards from where we are, and it's like one hundred twenty day thanksgiving. It doesn't sound bad. Yeah, let's I I. Don't know but I got a couple of things to bring up. I. Did want to talk about the the op-ed you wrote. Wrote thought you'd be a good person to talk about with the the tour merger, which has been eclipsed lately by a Co bit in the US Open, but this was sort of a hot topic, and everyone says the same thing which is great idea. The devils in the details, so let's let's advance that. How do we exercise those those devils details? How do we push through? So this becomes more than. In abstract idea that we need to negotiate what what are we doing to make this happen? Well I I think I think more than that. The Devil Devil's in the the leadership in other words I think it's GonNa take strong leaders it both part, both groups to get done, and I think Steve. Simon, and Mickey Lawler. Are Really, veterans, and and well respected, and well like Gatanzi the new chairman of the ATP I'm told his very smart very capable. And I. Think if the if they wanted to really do it, they get together. And then it takes a lot of support. You Know Billie, Jean and Roger, and some of the leaders in the game. All got behind it, then you. It's sort of like all the protests out there today you gotTa. You gotta move the ships and it's a big alphabet soup that everybody sort of fights for their turf. The ATP tour. Has Really established itself, but it's not part of the grand. Slams not far the idea. And not that that they want to be I don't Miss Other Sami, but I just think. Recently in the last six or eight years, the ATP tour has not worked very effectively in some senses because they've been voting in blocks the three tournament directors vote together. The three player reps vote together, and then the chairman's left. There was hanging vote and literally one vote because he always makes one side unhappy in the last two chairman. If you review John have been fired. Because one group didn't like how voted, and they need a super majority of forty two to extend. His contract so his contract ran out. In the last two cases now I'm told by people that very close to respect the Gal Gal Danzi is quite a different. Person needs a very strong leader, very smart and media and he really gets it. I just think for the sport It would be really helpful to have the two groups. Merged on a on a simple basis, and the when you talk about the details, you're right but I think the simplicity is what matters keep it simple stupid when you want to merge the to start with you don't have to have exactly the same boards, the same voting members, but come in and merge it, and have you know five or six basic principles and truthfully. We, found out in Washington with the city open that Iran for fifty years literally for the WTI ESPN Tennis Foundation. That We. We had a men's only event for forty two years, and then city came along our title sponsor, and rightfully said look fifty one percent of our clients. Bankers are women, so we're not gonNA. Unless you'll bring a women's tournament into it and we did, but it was a problem because there's a bigger women's event at Sanford for seven hundred thousand, we were only allowed by the rules for two fifty, but guess what. The ATP the minority of the ATP ten percent fought it tooth and nail. They didn't want it integrated tournament. And I to go before the board three different times, and swear up and down that we give him favorability on the scheduling of the Center Court. Scheduling, transportation scheduling practice courts. And it just didn't. It's working okay. And the women, the best women like to play Washington but now under the new WTA rules. We can only sign one of the top twenty in the world in order to protect the other event. That's raising more prize money by seven hundred or more, so those kind of problems out to be worked out and the ATP tour really needs to get a stronger with this membership the the the vocal minority, which is really only about ten or twelve percent, and it's always the complainers on the tour. The to aboard knows who they are, and they're always ranked between one hundred, fifty and three hundred,
Golfer Rich Beem on Q School and Beer Guts
"Let's get back to our interview with rich. Beem in this time period q-school. How did that work is that? How is that what? Your Path was to the PGA tour or able to just signed straight up for Q-school. Did you buy the minor leagues? Basically did I literally went straight from the pro shop to the PGA tour? So I'd won the section the Section Assistance Championship in nineteen ninety. Eight and nineteen ninety. Eight is what I really start playing really good and I have no idea what it what. How old are you at that time? Then Ninety eight I would have been twenty eight okay. So you're not a young. You're not a young Modo outta college but but naive for sure and I'll get to more of that later on but I went to q school. I won the assistance championship and it used to be years prior. That would actually get you a bypass of going first stage. And and so I would have been exempted second-stage although in nineteen ninety eight. They took that out. They said Nope you. You still have to go to first day so I had to go through all three stages of Q-school and I ended up in first one was in Scottsdale at a golf course called talking stick Ben Ben Crenshaw bellcore design fantastic track but I had to shoot sixty seven the final day to make it through to make it through first Yup through I age and then the second the second one was in Houston on the final day I was in by about two or three going into the final round and I was to over through six holes and on the seventh hole. I had a shot with a wedge but in the rough and I thought Flyer no-fly I don't think flyer it was a flyer and I absolutely air mail the green by like thirty yards and I got no shot. I have zero shot so I get back over there I find it. I hit it back to the front of the Green. I got sixty feet left. I'm choking and a mad on the same breath I mean I can't control myself. I'm literally trying not to vomit because I know that making the finals is a big deal well before I even thought about it. I pull the trigger. Hit knocked it in and then birdied the next two holes in the night. I shot I. I shot seventy one and got through comfortably at the end of the day but there are some the pressure of the stories you hear about Q-school in about how much pressure puts on you. It's unbelievable because if you don't get through second-stage you've just wasted five thousand bucks you nothing you guys that you got no status anywhere and so that was a big deal. That was a huge deal for me. In fact I funny enough bill hyme who caddied for me for fourteen years and come back and county for me. When when I turned fifty he actually was same venue. He lost in a playoff back then. They had a playoff. He lost in a playoff to get to the finals and then he actually drove out to finals. In case anybody withdrew and finals he was the first alternate in. Nobody dropped out in you. Figure that out of the two hundred seven guys are at finals. Somebody one guy nothing. Nobody dropped out so Turned out to be in both of our favors because he had a great career together and he's one of my closest friends but it was pretty funny. How how that'll happen. And you make it all the weight. How many how many. I looked up your class right here on Wikipedia. You have forty one guys make it through. How many are you estimate? I don't know the answer to this. But how many are you? Estimating had to go through from first stage all the way through the. There's a few of them that had to come to be fair. I don't know what the I mean. You Bo Van Pelt Charles Warren Jeffrey Hart and Rio Bravo and David Seawall in Roy Sabatini David Zero. Pga TOUR STARTS HERE. The only guys on there that had needs zero. Pj torstar so my buddies that came out of that was Bo. Van Pelt. Brian Baird Bird. I got to be close with. Oh I'm drawing a blank. I can't believe I'm drawn blanks on this. I'm so bad with names. It's killing me but I you know there's a bunch of guys that I became you know just because we went through that process together. It really was one of those weeks where you just. Kinda put your head down and you just keep on going. I know Mike. We're want it Mike sposa. That's the guy that was going to expose him. Brian Baird just because we we hung out together when we because right after. You got your car. You went to a class and we went through media class which I think that everybody in the room. Everybody well I I know for me. Factually I didn't hear a single word at. I know that the big Gulp in my hand wasn't really a big old. It was a big but it wasn't. It wasn't as advertised. So what? Yeah what is your. What is your reputation. Did you have a partying reputation on a founded reputation? Well-founded yeah I'M NOT GONNA Deny I. It's it's interesting because I think that a lot of the guys in there it's true. I listened soon as I get done playing golf. I like to have beverage. I absolutely have to have a beverage. I'm not going to deny that one iota. It was kind of in the air though when tiger was kicking everybody's ass and workouts were becoming super popular fitness. All of that sports psychologist. I mean all of it was it was. You know that's how it was but I mean before the final round at the Kemper Open and ninety nine at a big old fat enchilada plate and four cores. Lights that my dinner. That was just how I didn't you know and I think a lot of times. It was frowned upon where in generation. Before that you know. It's kind of like smoking. Everybody everybody used to smoke Nobody smokes right. 'cause it's frowned upon. It's looked down upon right but I listen. It was good. I had some good times. There's no doubt about it you know and I was successful at what I did now. I did it so well you away. At least a lot of people were some people work. You need some sort of release. I imagine after Tournament Golf. So when I when I played in tournaments like Inbetween Rounds Dude. I need a drink after a grinding for four or five hours and I think that there's there's something to that. Yeah I think there's a lot to that. I think that there's I think for different people at it. You know having having a drink it's more psychological because I needed because I've got eighty and I needed a way to stop thinking about golf. I needed a way to sit there. And not fret over what my stroke or what. My swing felt like or anything like that. Because if 'cause I could sit there and just go nuts. I still do go nuts. I mean there's a lot of time laying in bed in the middle of the night and I'm literally thinking about my putting or I'm thinking about my chip. I'm thinking about something that has to do with golf. That's just the way mine works. You know after a while you just get tired of that. Sure you just get burnt out of thinking about it all the time. It just eats gnaws at USA for for me when it came to the PGA tour in tournament. Golf I mean listen I I. They're probably very few rounds very around probably more so today. I I don't have. I don't drink a lot when after I play golf. Just kind of getting to that age and my body just doesn't like it that much anymore but I just I needed to have something to kind of smooth me out because I was so high strung and listen to other people do it different ways some guys want to go do push ups some guys. WanNa go running. I liked the smell of of wooden barstools and inside of a sitting at the bar watching TV. Well I think that there's a lot of people out there that kind of long for those days on the PGA tour both players and fans kind of you know a Lotta people love the some of the beer guts and that kind of culture seems to have gone by the way word and would you say you were one of the guys that kind of kept that going into the two thousands and who were some of those guys would kind of more celebrate that lifestyle though the unfortunately he's not on tour anymore but Anthony. Kim was legendary. Yeah legend give me absolutely everything. You've got to be fair. I mean some of it. I don't quite recall but I mean I remember. I didn't even hang out with them. I didn't hang out with them a lot off the golf course. I think in. That probably was good for both of us because I think we would have enabled one another quite a bit but I mean I remember Vegas a couple of times and you just you. You hear the stories about you know. There was a five day event and he was out and he was legend. I mean he would. He would go hard and he was not afraid to spend money. I mean the kid was unbelievable. Talented player I mean. There's no doubt about it. And but he was he could go. There are some guys that could could fly. I mean I for me. It was more I actually would. I would have probably sit there with my caddie and hang out with my caddie more than even I'd probably go sit in the caddy room. Instead of hang out up in the in the players locker room I spent more time just going out today with my caddie than I did any other players but you know you could hear stories about some guys who like to go and some guys when I first got on tour. There's a few guys Ted purdy would. It was always fun. Hang you know especially when we had missed the cut. I mean Ted was always good to hang with. It's not like John. Daly ask you know where you would go and where you would just go into your ran into a wall. And then you'd back up and run through the wall and go. I mean it was in by our standards. It was fairly tame but just sitting around. Just having a giggle and and enjoying life and whatnot. Not Letting not letting anything get you down you know after misguide or or celebrating after after a nice week cabinet evidence solid week or something like that but you know there are some guys that that are very quiet about how they do it but I promise you there's guys out there that are right in the middle of it and they like to have fun. Well who's your caddy that you that it was at Steve. Duplantis Steve duplantis was my caddy for the Kemper. Open win he was my he was Caddy for me for probably about five months five months and I finally said I can't hang with anymore. Yes we're just a bad influence on each out part of it but I I think though in one of my rare mature moments. I figured that you know what probably needs somebody. That's a little more grounded and I went through probably three or four guys so I found the right one and then once I found the right
Super Bowl Bound: 49ers and Chiefs
"Did bill. We made it to the Super Bowl. You me and Jimmy Garoppolo. I feel I I may have sweat more watching the NFC championship game. That Jimmy Garoppolo actually swept playing being in the NFC championship game. Bill Barnwell is a senior football writer at ESPN and the host of the bill. Barnwell show so after two weeks Of Extremely Exciting Football Championship weekend did not disappoint niners and chiefs fans disappointed pretty much everyone else or at least anyone who wanted close close games both favorites dominated so let's start with the most dominant team the San Francisco Forty niners bill win the niners packers met earlier earlier. This season. Aaron Rodgers had one of the worst games of his career threw for one hundred and four yards. Tonight he threw for three hundred twenty six yards But the result wasn't much better. Why is that okay? So the first time these two teams played the niners won with an absolutely dominant. Pash Josh Rush Nick. Bosa and his teammates knocked down Aaron Rodgers ten times on Sunday. The only knockdown Aaron Rogers twice and while they did hold them without a first down conversion in the first half both of those games the packers movable pretty consistently I should say after after halftime instead the forty niners otherworldly in a different way on Sunday they ran the ball forty two times for two hundred eighty five yards and four. We're touchdowns averaging nearly seven yards per carry to put that in context. ESPN has a stat called expected. Points with measures how each play impacts team's James Chances of scoring on a given the forty niners racked up the second most rushing. EPA for any team in a game this season and and the most for any single team in a playoff game over the last decade just narrowly beating out the prior record holder. which just happened to be the forty niners? Twenty wanting twelve playoff win over. The Green Bay Packers would Colin Kaepernick. Ran For one hundred. Eighty one rushing yards. So they're leading rusher tonight. I was not Colin Kaepernick. It was re Moster who ran for two hundred and twenty yards by himself. were good has hat trick the first half of the NFC championship game deserves a hat trick of field grade baby bill. Will I am guessing. A decent amount of football fans hadn't heard Ramos before tonight. Okay so you mustard is basically it accident accident in football terms but it's such a cool story so the Shanahan offense has a history of unearthing obscure running back and turning them into stars going back to Mike Shanahan stays in Denver but even among those backs most particularly remarkable case. Liners did everything they could to find a different running back over the past a couple of years. They hand picked a runner who they traded up to nab in the two thousand seventeen draft never played a game for the team. They signed Jerick McKinnon Torres. ACL He's collected more than and twenty one million dollars for the niners without ever playing a single game for the team. This offseason they added. Kevin Coleman from the Falcons who suffered an injury in the first half and that opened up the door from western and most of its story is easy to root for. You heard him talk about it. After the biggest game of his life on Sunday crazy that I've been on seven. Different teams actually still have cut dates every before every game a look at the dates when I got cut not everybody can can deal. Would that type of stressing the pain and agony I went through. I kept the faith to not only myself but whoever gave me the opportunity is organization has done a great job most are made the niners roster as a special teamer at first but after he looked good in limited time last season they gave him a three year extension after playing. Well this season most are just became the first running back. NFL history to top two hundred rushing yards and scored four rushing touchdowns in a single game. That's never happened in the playoffs playoffs before pretty good for a guy who was really an afterthought until the two thousand eighteen season. What's just remarkable? Bill is those two hundred twenty rushing yards. Were nearly three times as many yards as Garoppolo the night as quarterback past for which made for a remarkable stat sheet. There was a point in this football game where according to ESPN stats and Info. Jimmy went ninety four minutes in real time without attempting a pass so I have to ask going into the Super Bowl. Is that a sustainable offensive approach. I mean we all had that friend and in our twenties who got by succeeded solely because they were good looking right now that friend is Jimmy. Garoppolo I mean in the divisional round. He barely through through the football in the conference championship game. He barely through the football. We saw a similar situation with Ryan. Tannehill right over the first two weeks of his post. The season and when Tennessee ran into an offensive juggernaut with the chiefs their offense with Danny Hillis not able to accelerate into a higher gear. Now of course Garoppolo is the one who has to face the chiefs unless the forty niners can shut down the Kansas City. Passing game with their pass rush which isn't out of the question they're going to need to throw the football more quite a bit more. We've seen the niners succeed in games or Garoppolo and to throw the ball at ton with the Saints Win. Maybe as a notable for example but since Garoppolo through that interception against the Vikings in the divisional round cow Shanahan has called seventy one runs against just twelve passes passes even if the niners do end up throwing the ball effectively against the chiefs. It's clear that Shanahan doesn't WANNA put the game on Garoppolo shoulders unless absolutely necessary and that in itself is telling throughout the game bill packers fans were frustrated. Understand police and they seem to be taking out some of their wrath on the coaches arguing. They should have devised better game. Plans to both run the ball more and stop the run and do you think there's anything that Matt Leflore or the Packers Defensive Coordinator Mike Patton could have done differently in this game. Yeah I think so I think to be fair. Shanahan might just ask pedants number. It just felt like you is several steps ahead of the packers defensive coordinator and when pen and tried to adjust it just never seemed to catch up and work there. There was one play I think in the second quarter was a microcosm of everything that went wrong for the packers in this game. They came out in their nickle package with five defensive backs against the forty niners base. He's too back offense which created the size mismatch. The niners pitched the Baltimore and not only did he have a huge hole but he made both safeties with on their tackle attempts downfield win for about thirty yards. pedants struggled to put his players in positions where they could succeed and meanwhile leflore didn't coach like a guy who was a seven point underdog. The packers punted. I believe on their first drive on fourth and one from the fifty yard line. We know the packers are enormously more effective offense with Aaron Aaron Jones on the field but the floor still Jamal Williams their backup running back. Play over thirty percent of the offensive snaps and he didn't really take advantage of move the niners movement Richard Sherman. That was really fascinating during the regular season for the niners and during the vast majority of his time in Seattle Sherman signed up for almost every every snap asked the left cornerback. Defense playing against the right side of the offense. The niners started the game on Sunday. Which chairman on the opposite side of the field on the right side of the defense on the left side of the offense against devante items and while Sharon didn't travel to the left side very frequently? He did do it a few times during the first half. The second half Adams was able to be isolated Sherman over the top for a huge play downfield. I think that played about half of his snaps on either side of the field. I would have liked to have seen for trying to isolate him against German a little more often and take his chances with

Patriots Were Firing on All Cylinders en Route to 24-17 Win Over Buffalo Bills

Where Does Cam Newton Go From Here?
"Jeremy the first line of your story is. He can't go out like this. It's kind of crazy to me that that is even being said about Cam Cam Newton in the first place. If you look at the situation with the Carolina Panthers and Cam Newton a guy that called Superman of former. MVP It is just hard to make sense ESPN NFL writer. Jeremy Fowler has spent the last few weeks reporting on Cam Newton's future going into the season of you to tell me that Cam Newton would potentially be on the way out of Carolina and there will be this big mess I would not by any stretch have believed you before we get into the confluence of factors that led us to this moment. Explain why it's so unusual to even be having a conversation like this about a quarterback like Newton will mean. It is crazy because he changed the game game. This is a guy that was bred to be a winner from his days at Auburn he won the national championship number. One overall pick set rookie records Kurds for total yards on winning. MVP in two thousand fifteen three different seasons of ten or more wins. Everything was lined up for this guy to be a top five top top ten quarterback for the next fifteen twenty years. Just terrible lineup. What an improvisational improvisational play by CAM? Newton he altered the way. We look at the style of the quarterback position. Because we've seen running quarterbacks before but this is a guy. I was flipping into the end zone quarterback. He's making the superman sign with his arms after scoring and and you know he was Such an imposing figure that he looked like a combination of a pass rusher linebacker and a running back coming at you full speed and the whole the mack truck. That was something ended. The League really hadn't seen before goodness isn't this is the NFL. You're not supposed to be able to do that. And then there was the off field appeal. This is a guy who would show up to. His press. Conference was a fashion show. He's got the bedazzled hats glasses being able to be Orally gifted. There's something that I think. A master to a degree. I mean this is a guy that we couldn't take our eyes off of whether whether he was on the field or do you think his style of football in some ways impacted his body in a way that led us to this point it has to be a factor. I mean we're talking about a guy who's taken eleven hundred plus hit since two thousand eleven and more than half of those have been in the last four years since around two thousand fifteen. That's more than Russell Wilson. More than any other guy. Things have piled up on them as a result he was all about power shear power that was part of what made him so great. He did bulldoze you in the open field. He could run for the thirty yards and so just. The pounding as a result has clearly affected where areas now so the first few years of camps career sort of builds towards this magical season in two thousand fifteen. He's the MVP and it all leads up to the Super Bowl and what should have been a high point for him ended up being a low one the pants lose and perhaps unfairly the the indelible memory for a lot of people is the fumble. He failed to recover. Do you think that game changed perceptions of him roll. It stripped him of his invincibility. One one personnel told me the Denver took his Superman Cape. They took it away and he was never the same after that. And that's probably unfair because it's one game on the the biggest stage but you know. Denver played a certain way where they kept hitting them. The seven six rushing four-ball comes out of the hands on the ground still on the ground picked up by the yard line. And since then cam sense of some really good moments but it's been a little hit or miss even on the field when he is in the lineup and so it was a turning point for a career that was at a wildly high trajectory at that point you're talking about not only an MVP season but he could get into the end zone. Whenever he wanted that year it was just? He played a pretty much flawless season. And then it all SORTA changed after that game so that super bowl will is kind of a turning point for Cam than what happened last season in two thousand eighteen well last season he was a potential. MVP candidate after the first eight or so weeks. The panthers are sitting at six and two Newton looks great. He's got nineteen total touchdowns you know he's rushing but he's also being patient the pocket making throws so this was a team That was on the rise and was sort of recapturing. Maybe the magic. They had a couple years earlier for that. Super Bowl run so it was nothing but promising at that point an annual in early Donovan. Where you go to Pittsburgh you go to Heinz field? You're thinking this'll be another turning point for your season and then TJ comes the blindside. He knocks Cam. Newton he runs right into that right right shoulder into the turf and he had already been on the injury report with a shoulder injury. They didn't think it was serious at that time but watts shot clearly reaggravated things to the point where by by the end of the year he was struggling to throw the ball. Forty forty five yards. I mean it was pretty ugly out there right. I mean he wasn't pulled but I remember number. They stopped using him for Hail Marys I N. It became apparent that something was deeply wrong. Throw by CAM. It didn't reach. The end zone landed fifteen yards short of the goal line. This is a guy that could throw sixty five yards on a rope. And so they're taking them out putting Taylor Heinecke of all people to throw a deep ball. I mean there couldn't have been a deeper foreshadow for maybe the problems that were rising with Cam Newton's future alright so he ends up shutting it down for the last two games of that twenty eighteen season and in the off season. He has some shoulder surgery but by the time this season starts it seems like he has recovered and things are looking optimistic again for Cham. How does the twenty nineteen season actually began for him throwing the ball? He looked pretty tentative. No touchdown passes in the first two weeks. He didn't really look as comfortable normally. Does you know that you can win games with them but certainly not an MVP level that. They're there used to so after the panthers second game against the Bucks. It's revealed that Cam has some kind of foot injury but nobody really knows what's going on right. There's a lot of mystery around the injury and all of a sudden campaigns out this fifteen minute youtube video go here we are just record. I want to be brutally honest. The video was him. Basically Chilin in a hat and glasses passes and he's in like this leather black chair and he opens up about his foot injury as I'm about to jog around realize okay. Uh I feel like in the game but it's like something missing. There was a bit bizarre. But it's it. It was good that he came on spoke about it. And try to provide some clarity and in that video basically said got hurt. preseason hurt the foot against the Patriots this is where I got him away because automatically. I got play we go. I can't let fans down. He basically told coaches. Hey I'm good I'm all good. You know I'm Superman. I can continue to play. And then once week two-headed reaggravated the injury. What happened offended with this footage metatarsal bones and they separate from the base of the? That's a list rank injury but if it's a really bad separation or some sort of break then usually need surgery. Cam has not had that yet which pretends everybody to believe. He's got a sprain but a pretty bad one just hasn't healed yet but he doesn't want to have surgery. I'm able to get the time off for me to. He'll get back to one hundred percent then. I have no doubt in my mind everything everything that we won't as a team can still be accomplished. He made clear in the video that they need to go away and get back to what I was. and that's significant anytime. A player says that that means they're out that doesn't mean they're going to rush back to play and so he basically new I think at that point I was GonNa shut it down

Charges will play the patriots in the divisional playoffs. Ravens had a chance. Lamar jackson. Three fumbles lost that one thirteen total fumbles since week eleven five more than any other player. When you want to be I did not are floppy awfully poorly. It was a lot of things, you know, we could have did. I don't feel put us in better situation. Got to move on from there. Lamar Jackson twenty five yards passing through the first three quarters hundred and sixty nine of his one hundred ninety four passing yards came on the final three drives is coach John Harbaugh? We were just talking about possibly all possibilities. I'm not gonna probably get into all that Peter in terms of what was said or not said, but I can assure you we were considering putting Joe in the game and all kinds of stuff. It was part of the conversation. Certainly thought about certainly talked about it with everybody. I can tell you this. It was it was everybody was on the same page of what we did everybody including Joe. So that's that's that's what was that toyed with the idea of putting Joe flacco and ultimately stay with Lamar Jackson ravens come up short or NFL primetime crew. But you heard John Harbaugh say we talked about the idea of putting Joe flacco. And was it the right call for them to stick with Lamar Jackson. I believe it was the right call Lamar. There is no question that flacco right now at this stage Lamar's career is a better pass one hundred however because of Lamar's ability as a sometimes adequate passer, but a ridiculously talented runner. He's actually the more explosive player. Flacco was going to be instant offense because they put him back in. There's a reason they went to Jackson. So and you saw he brought them back. So for me, I actually thought it was the right thing to do to stick with you. I couldn't agree more. Let's say he had he played in nine games. I mean about guy just gonna walk out hadn't been in a game. It's not like things are just instant all of a sudden you find the rhythm with the receivers and checks and all those things you've got to make the line as much as you play don't discredit our game. The game of football is tough. And you put a lot of time you practice a lot of reps. When you're not getting those reps. They kept the right guy in win or lose with them. I mean, this is what this is the future of your organization. You understand what it was? I think they did right thing. "This from that subject. What were your initial thought you saw what happened to the Green Bay Packers against the Los Angeles? Rams when Tom Montgomery took that ball out of the end zone on the kickoff, and ran it out and fumbled the ball instead of making sure that they got to Amer Rogers with a little onto two minutes left in the game. And all you needed was a field. Go to win. What were your thoughts? When you saw that happened. Well, first off, I just think in maybe my eyes are open to it more. Now that I'm in the chair Monday night football, but you know game management. It's so important. And oftentimes we see it's like, man. I I don't know. It's played out. Exactly perfect. I understand you gotta make a lot of big time decisions in split seconds. But you know, time is more important than yardage in that standpoint of taking that kickoff return out. Right. I mean, you know, I mean, how many of those do we see get passed the thirty yard line. We know the average of going to twenty five yards now with the new rule teams are doing that. Just because they're saying are most of the time. We're not even getting there, certainly when you have Aaron Rodgers on your team, you wanna give him the ball with as much time as you possibly can give. So, you know, obviously, they add all over do again. They would they would say not come out to me like you. I just said did he make that decision on his own going against what the coaching staff asked him to do. Do then you have an issue. I I haven't been able to get to the bottom of that. I know you're working really hard to figure that out. It sounds like that necessarily wasn't the case of did they tell us to in. And he went out anyways. Or was it? Just like, hey, I'm gonna make a play for my team. This is my attitude. Jason if he made a mistake. It happens is football. It's on wise. But it happens is football. It's not a big deal. If he actually ignored a directive from the coach who told him, the take a knee, and he just ignored the order ignore the order as they say not to pick up a few good men, but ignored the order if that then you know, what I cut his behind. I really would have or shipped them off to the ravens like they did if he ignored the order, but he's saying that he didn't. And if he's saying that he did it. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt and not believe that he would be so insubordinate and so selfish in that situation. Absolutely. I agree. But the bottom line, regardless of you know, where you fall on that you want to get the ball with Aaron Rodgers, and I would have liked to seen what Aaron did in that situation. I mean, 'cause you know, I called the game a couple of weeks ago when he did it against San Francisco. I would've liked to seen not only for Green Bay side took to look at that. But also want to see it from the ram side of you know, they made all these acquisitions, and we kind of put them. His contenders. And certainly they are setting their undefeated eight. No. But I wanted to see how their defense could handle plan in those tough situations at critical times, and it'd been a great learning experience for all of us to be able to watch. And I think it would have been a big tail to see how you know the rest of the season plays out. But the bottom line when you look at Green Bay, it's so tricky because I don't know that anybody would have doubted or bet against Aaron Rodgers in that situation because of the body of work and how good he is in those situations and a two minute drill. But at the same time if you really look at it it took one of those Hercules performance against San Francisco Abacha emphasis co- team to win that one on Monday night a couple of weeks ago opening night, heroic performance coming back down to Chicago probably should've lost that one Minnesota. They have the draw kicker. Probably should have made that kick for Minnesota..

The kind of stands out I know he's not bubble the ball just like his acceleration till the whole to the guy, who's read in the scheme a better field and under understanding of, what what he's looking for what he wants to do more decisive in his movements just kinda like. On that last play there we got the ball really made his decision got up. In there Quick aggressive got his four yards so third and. One to thirty. Five remaining in the first. Half give it to? Williams again hanging for the. First down and he'll have it out across the thirty five to thirty six now that was in the shotgun but it, was an inside gun run and got him the first down Kyle, Shanahan likes to use formation and and different things to kind of confused the defense and that looks. Like a passing formation that got him the run on first down So here we go coming down to the two minute warning with two oh seven left Beth. Will get a playoff faked to, give to Williams dropped back to pass fire over the middle and dropped, there's a flag on the play that is one that Dante Pettis would walk back he. Was open the ball was there and it went in and out of his hands Wait on the laundry here Flag was on the nearside drop passes in. The middle of the field Oberle Asking Dallas what they would. Prefer so the Niners will walk backwards Holding offense.
