"Invest $20 billion over the next decade during a visit by president Joe Biden to the company's campus in Poughkeepsie, New York, President Biden will also be in New Jersey today for a democratic fundraiser. Yesterday, President Biden was in Florida. The president laid out some of the benefits available to storm victims who lost property during hurricane Ian. If you don't have insurance, or if you're underinsured and you found a place to rent or your car has been destroyed, you're entitled, maybe entitled up to $37,900 in federal funds. Biden received a warm welcome from Florida governor Ron DeSantis. New York City council members are proposing housing asylum seekers and hotels and churches. The ideas from last night's council meeting come after mayor Eric Adams now wants to house migrants in a tent city at Randall's island. Mere Adams scrapped the original idea of having the migrant relief center in Orchard beach after opposition from both sides of the debate. However, critics say the new Randall's island location will still have the same problems, including access for migrants to get jobs, healthcare, and schools. More than 30 people primarily children were killed today when a gunman opened fire in a child care center in northeastern Thailand. Authorities say the gunman took his own life. North Korea has launched two ballistic missiles into its eastern waters after the U.S. redeployed an aircraft carrier in response to the north's earlier launch of a nuclear capable missile over Japan. Japanese prime minister fumio kishida said the North Korean action was absolutely intolerable. Today's launches came as the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan returned to waters east to South Korea. Meanwhile, Tuesday's launches were North Korea 6 round of weapons test in less than two weeks that has been condemned by the U.S. and other countries. Secretary of saint Anthony blinken spoke to reporters concerning Tuesday's missile launches. We are taking appropriate defense and deterrent steps with allies and partners. We called for UN Security Council meeting, and we're consulting with our partners on next steps. But I also want to make very clear that our commitment to the defense of our allies and partners Korea and Japan is ironclad. Secretary blinken. "Didn't exactly have andrew. Bogusch post draft smash party of being the star of that. He told some incredible anecdotes in that andrew. Bogut for me the star this show but kind of goes to show really the kind of atropine in the draft process every year. Tom which is there's always like one or two guys whether it's the nfl draft the nba. Drafter goes well. Obviously he's gonna be a great player. Nfl chris paul develop that but the draft process the way that it works the interviews the workouts all the extracurricular stuff and as you as you mentioned the peace kind of cognitive biases get in the way of really what folic obvious. Choice both then. And in retrospect yeah and again as i mentioned the peace hindsight twenty twenty like we look back now. Oh it's obvious that. Chris paul was going to be the best player but i think it also speaks to what we're gonna see in the next two weeks. Nba draft is coming up here in the next two weeks is keep this in mind. Is you're in a covert era. A pandemic era these snapshots of players and draft interview process and in in workouts. Like be careful like that is a very small sample. Size is probably smarter to look at the full body of work And in the case of chris paul as we just found out he didn't even get a chance to meet with the milwaukee bucks. So it's a big. What if maybe chris paul. If you'd went to the milwaukee bucks. Chris maybe they've already won championships together and that's the real story. Here is the what if chris. Paul landed with the bucks. This might not be the same matchup here in the nba finals. And who knows what kind of i mean the in sliding doors way. Everything in milwaukee bucks history give to the change in ownership we hear from her about senator herb kohl in there and the change in ownership. How much has changed the franchise so much could have gone differently. If not for chris. Paul being drafted. I over on the oh five. Nba draft. tom. This is great stuff. Thanks for thanks for having me on the show. this is great to be a mystery crate..

"Say that you know that anecdote about andrew bogut. I've i've heard these types of anecdotes all the time. And i've been doing the draft a long time and i would say two things are for the most part pretty meaningless. It's little stumps like that about coming into a resume wearing a suit. You know all of that stuff coming in to the interview process. You can be coach to do that at a good age. It can tell you how to prepare. Now maybe the players clever. I don't think actually translates much to what's gonna happen on the basketball court and you know i famously. As as of others have been burned by great workouts especially when a guy like bogut is working in gym one on. None of those can be highly misleading. Some of the best workouts. I've ever witnessed than i've i've witnessed some really incredible ones have been complete non players in the nba and so those are the sorts of things that i think are sort of interesting often. When you hear teams get a pick wrong there will be an anecdote like that sort of attached to it. They came in they. I know they couldn't shoot in college with a shot. The lights out in our workout or the came in they were so professional they have something prepared to give this great answer to this question or whatever and this is what's so fascinating to me about draft thomas. There's all these human emotions that are involved in all of this and as human beings we can be really bad at sort of evaluating all the evidence that's out there objectively and our motions get involved in in really powerful ways as mine and they often really color. What can be obvious afterwards after the fact about sort of how we miss things and so those are actually really interesting. Sort of red flags for me when you're talking about a guy that went number one. The shouldn't have gone number one about why they went number. One number one for the wrong reasons and let's be clear about one thing regardless of what happened draft night. There's no love. Lost between bogut and paul where at least from bogus perspective on no differently. I think he's the same way. So but yeah. I definitely respect arkan- arkansas separate not liking the person whether it be athletically you'll whatever it is. Even political views are separate to the body of work in setting industry riding christie's one best at in our. He's a phenomenal alita. He's got a very high boss. Bill which i appreciate very much. He's out of play. The game he gets done dominant As baynes baynes fun to watch specially. They fought considering considering that he's doing it at thirty six thirty seven years old. That's probably the most amazing pot oldest Skinny outta bed for may it's hot. It's on and let's get it. Twisted andrew bogut had a really good. Nba career all nba one season. Nba champion led. The league in blocks made the all defensive team for the warriors but even bogut admits. He's not so sure he would have been a top five. Pick on a two thousand five redraft. He was certainly not a bus. Not on the level of anthony bennett or michael. Ola candy or andrea barn yanni far from it but the fact that paul fell to number four because of size concerns. That may seem preposterous. Now as steph curry damian lillard trae young and yes chris. Paul himself are dominating the league we also have to remember how the league was back then. It was still the land of giants and the idea that guards could rule the land. Still hadn't taken hold. Even if steve nash did win the two thousand five. Mvp remember. tim duncan and shack one. Six of the previous seven titles and seven of the previous eight number one picks were all big names like yao-ming kwame brown and dwight howard like giant redwoods. So maybe it did take a small hall of famer like isaiah thomas to see the forest through the trees so whether it was the corporate america's strategy that size issue or the julius hodge incident that met milwaukee and a few other teams passed on chris. Paul he still a hall of famer. Still one of the best point guards ever even perhaps an mba champion. And i guess. If i say really saw that and chris paul you could've traded up to get him and hey chris paul could be a free agent this summer and guess who needs a point guard. That's right the new york knicks sixteen years later. Maybe the next can finally get chris paul on their team. Hey better late. The never right for metallurg media. I'm tom haberstroh. I.

"The fourth pick in two thousand and four. Nba draft the new orleans. Hornets celek chris. Paul for wake forest diversity. Did you catch that. David stearns mess up their listen again with the fourth pick in the two thousand and four nba draft. Yeah two thousand and four draught until this nba finals. Chris paul himself never picked up on it. It's crazy you know. I actually fiance in our watching that video last week and it was brought to my attention on instagram. And i watched it and still didn't pick up on it and had never picked on on it on the last fifteen or sixteen years and my fiance said man. I'm chris was in two thousand five on said he was well. David surges two thousand four. And it's funny bit. You just found that out as well and noticed it. I sent it to chris and his brother. Cj neither one of them had ever noticed it. As well and. Chris said he had watched it a hundred times and that was the first time he had realized that david stern had said the wrong year. That draft night misstep was trivial compared to bogus misstep later that night. I asked bogey if there was a big celebration afterwards. And here's what he said. Although our pod family as family from australia croatia with those actually a friend of mine while workout out with pre-draft his name was dr partial. Itchy was a croatian kid of light second if drafted it all heating get drafted so as a pretty dismal. Not for him but are expected him because he came potted with me. Anyway but yeah. I'd always always missed that night. Like i Almost died on the way back to the hotel off the body or luckily because i always crossing the right on a red and my sister grabbed me is all messed up by taxi. So that would have been early career from one peak Just saved your life on draft night. essentially Yeah maybe hospital was case. But yeah i mean you know. You'll taxi drivers drive through so yeah just win. Strike by me. She grabbed me and then waking up. The next morning was a big problem. Is i think i had ten. Am fly on a private jet to milwaukee to go meet everybody in man i'll i was. I was always bailey. Add a bit at nine. New york's agree messy room after after Say that so after the draft night went down. I wondered if chris paul had it out for bogut or hata bogut sized chip on his shoulder every time he played the australian big man increase has a chip on in shoulder whenever place. We were pod. Pod golden state revamped The clues to earn us. When i first got there and it was just used to physically imposed on dawn ryan blake and then chris paul khanna traded stiff somewhat like the commercial needed within the insurance commercial. Where it was like. He's little bra and That on that pissed off It was funny. 'cause christie's takada somewhat mental status like. That's my guy. Stiff started beaten and that that table surrogate. But i think chris has Pop whenever he's on the court. I think it's anything to do with where he went in the draw that is just. That's how it plays a game in college punch. They were not doing all kinds of things is just kinda got so. The julius hodge thing. If i'm being fair here we should probably talk about that so just before the tournament. Paul hit nc state star. Julius hodge below the belt and got suspended for the opening game of the acc tournament which wake forest lost which internment they wouldn't be a number one seed in the ncaa term which in turn gave him a harder road in the postseason as a number two seed weight loss to west virginia in double overtime in the second round. Now paul would later apologized for the incident and he said nc state fans were taunting him about his late grandfather and he got caught up in it and still. I can't help but wonder if directly or indirectly that punch could have made paul slide in the draft and it wasn't attributed to something like a suit and tie trick or a fancy cover letter that did it in some alternate universe a number one seed in the tournament may mean an eventual number one. Pick for paul. Maybe people just didn't like the cheap shot in subliminally lowered him on draft boards. So i raise the julius hodge factor to chad ford and ford had nothing in his notes about it. It was so office radar that he forgot about the entire incident altogether until i refreshed his memory about it. It didn't come up in any of my notes. That's why i didn't. I didn't remember. I'm remembering now that you're talking about it. But i wasn't in any of the notes that i had about him so i don't think there were character concerns about chris paul. I think that size was by far the biggest issue. I see coming up again and again in my notes you take little guard. I mean you know. He was in direct comparison with darren williams who is bigger and more physical but didn't have this sort of court vision and sort of feel for the game chris. Paul did you know what what is interesting is how many scalps said. And i'm just looking through my notes. He's the best point. Guard prospects in jason kidd so on a talent basis. That was very very high praise. You know at the time that he was the best pure point guard. Prospect center jason kidd. I see that over and over again so it's not that scouts were downgrading him the. I actually think that if i was just reading the tea leaves on the scouting reports. The most glowing scouting report of anybody in this draft was chris. Paul the suit and tie thing seemed to be more impactful than.

"He covered the draft for espn for over a decade. And here's what he had to say about is as draft prowess. That doesn't surprise me because one. He's right isaiah. Thomas was an excellent talent evaluator. Everything else about isaiah was extremely problematic as a front office person but as talent evaluator united talk by multiple times for a drafts in. He had a really keanae for talent. I think you're also right about the fact that isaiah could project himself into chris. Paul there was a lot of similarities between the two and isaiah guaranteed felt like if he were in the nba. In two thousand and five he would still be the superstar that he was in the eighties. Like you know. I'm sure he had that level of confidence and swagger and so you know him seem himself a bidding chris paul and not going to diminish him based off of his size that that makes perfect sense to me that knicks would have selected him number one if they would have had the shot. Now four didn't have chris paul number one on his draft board. He was big on. Marvin williams and admittedly became enthralled with marvins untapped potential compared to pau who size held him back. One of the interesting things for me. Tom is was just thinking about this watching chris. Paul play in the finals. Chris isn't nearly as athletic as he was fifteen sixteen years ago. And he's just the small as he was sixteen years ago though he's certainly added strength to his frame. I think one thing that chris paul did really well as he continued to get stronger and he eats physically. He's very strong player but he clearly doesn't have the explosion speed and quickness that that he wants did and we were worried about his lack of size sixteen years ago. The league has gotten bigger. It's gotten taller. You have more versatile wings. You have bigger than you had even fifteen years ago roaming around the nba. And here's chris. Paul still imposing his will on the game sixteen years later we we just and i'm one of them just bungled that's analysis that somehow. His his lack of elite size was going to affect in in the league. It's he still dominant as a player. Sixteen years later and he doesn't have the same pop athletically that he wants did that to me is really remarkable when i look back at how the media covered the two thousand five draft. What stands out to me is how many people were readily acknowledging. That paul was the best player in the class. Bill simmons at espn dot com wrote in his two thousand five draft diary. Utah takes darren williams number three perfect pick with some luck. You'll be half as good as chris. Paul later on. He'd right new orleans happily grabs chris paul with the fourth pick partly because he's the best player in the draft partly because he's one of four people in this draft. You could handle playing in new orleans at draft express dot com. Jonathan devan who is now at. Espn gave new orleans and a writing quote possibly the best player in this draft in chris. Paul fell right into their lap at number four and new orleans. Gobble them up as they should have. Andrew bogut himself was thinking. Paul should have gotten more love heading into the draft. I asked whom he thought could have been number one. if it wasn't going to be him our full chris. Paul would have been the mix not just saying that now because he's korea but it was tough college women's to the woods nights and he was part of the awards nights he was a contender. Frolo wars with myself a nice and all that kind of stuff wouldn't an awful a genuine chance but yeah i was surprised that econo- economy slip. That down voted a conversation with myself and really instead bogut went number one overall atlanta shocked many people by taking marvin williams at number two in two thousand nine hundred thousand chris. Paul told the houston chronicle that he actually had gotten up when david stern was announcing the atlanta pick because he was so sure he was going there. He even zeroed in on a house in gwinnett county. Instead hawks past and started broil ivy at point guard the next season utah took darin and then with.

"That this thing was just really sold us. Respect business any player i've ever ever ever been. I was literally talking hockey chris. So here's what is fascinating to me. Let's say the bugs don't essentially stop the draft process right there and let's say they bring in chris paul for a workout an interview. Would they be just as smitten with chris. Paul because the i q stuff the professionalism all those characteristics that convinced the bucks that bogut was guy. a lot of those same traits have been attached. Chris paul over. The years sky was voted the president of the nba players union. A position. paul new- well because he was also the class president of west forsyth high school. Chris paul's agent at the time lance young who works as vp of excel management. Now he thought getting paul in front of teams in the draft process was going to be key. And i take when you when you meet chris and christner still friends till this day fifteen years later he was just a guy he spoke. Well he demanded respect in could capture your attention and when he walked into a room you knew he was there. He had the charisma even at nineteen or twenty years old his competitiveness and his grit and just his work ethic was gonna be second to nine so i think getting him in front of the teams are bowl is just for people to get to know chris paul a little bit more and show he was going to be the most competitive player out there and that was something that we knew was going to go a long way these gm and scouts mines and paul never got that chance to prove to milwaukee he should be the number one pick and paul's agent lance young initially thought he'd have a good chance to be number one every kid who's a lottery probably wants to be the number one pick in the draft It's such an honor. So that was our goal. But i think as everything played out he probably wanted to go play for charlotte number one and then being number one in the draft list won a or one b. It's obvious now that chris paul was the best player of the draft in his career. He's accumulated the tenth most wind shares in nba history according to basketball reference and yielding. Nearly more value at number four. Then andrew bogut marvin williams and darren williams combined but look. It's easy to monday morning quarterback this thing and say it was obvious at the time that paul was the right pick at number one so i asked my esteemed colleague amino hasson who worked in the phoenix suns for an office for years and when he and the sun's thought of p. and turns out. I realized we're meeting was in his baseball career at that point. Who two thousand five. I was working for the nixon basketball operations. I was an intern and My memory of that time was all the scout meeting so we had throughout the year because teams do teams. We'll have get all scouts together and we'll talk about who's your top ten or top. Whatever in the draft top players in the draft. This isn't really a mock draft. You don't you're not really guessing what other people are going to do. You're just saying hey. These are my favorite players in the draft. My memory is that most everybody had bogut number one. That was consensus consensus gets. Which by the way wasn't out of the ordinary. Because if you look at all the mock drafts and all the stuff around that time that was available to the public boga was the number one prospect. The one person who i remember steadfast every single time at a different number one was isaiah thomas. Who of course was president of baseball ops. For at the time. Isaiah had chris paul number one and i won't lie young means i'm thinking myself look let me say right now like players who turned up front office people tend to have like a soft spot or an affinity for players that reminding them of themselves and i thought that was what was happening with isaiah. I thought isaiah saw a lot of himself in crispell as undersized guard very tough very scrappy but extremely intelligent very skilled. I've thought that's what isaiah was seeing like ghosts of his past but credit to him he saw he knew that that was the best player in the draft that year. And here's what's even crazier about that. Isaiah thing back. When i first started out as an nba analyst at espn. Back in two thousand nine. I created a draft database called the draft initiative and yes loss fans. I'll have you know. It was a shadow to the dharma initiative. We have to go back. We have to go back. The draft initiative analyzed the career value of every draft pick of the past two decades and through that number crunching i determined the expected benchmark for each draft lot one through sixty and that spun off all kinds of juicy articles like the best and worst pick every slot and one of the things i looked at was the best. Gm on draft night statistically which gm had outperformed their draft slot created more value out of their opportunities than any other gm. The answer stunned me and everyone else in the research room in bristol. The best performing. Gm on draft night was isaiah thomas in toronto. He just nailed his picks. Finding tracy mcgrady at number nine damon stoudamire number seven. Marcus camby was a really solid number two pick but then in new york he found. Trevor reason number forty three two time. All star david lee at number thirty in the two thousand five draft wilson chandler at twenty three nate robinson at twenty one. I mean he had hits home runs all over the place as a scout and in the end is as average pick was the twenty third draft slot but the talent he found was more like picking at six every year. And yes isaiah thomas record on sexual harassment at the workplace and other gm duties with the knicks and his tenure running the cba into the ground. Not great to say the least but now it makes sense. That isaiah predicted. Chris paul's hall of fame career. I talked to chad ford who runs. "One. I remember my nerves. I remember shaking so much. Because like i never really thought about the impact of what the number one would be or the pressure was going to get right. Rule gonna get a fight. It was just really felt almost the whole state of his hunt. Certainly the stadium to walk is like what this is. A great stays within. I didn't feel as verdon. I just felt like we needed to get even now. Harris brings up that bogut draft when he talks the warriors. Makers like bob myers told. Bob myers everybody's like hey by the number one. I know what i would do until you in that position. You'd have that selection. You want to make sure you. So how did the bucks ensure that they would pick the right guy. They started with their list of six prospects because they were expecting to go six in the draft. And from there they start to whittle it down from six to five to four and eventually they landed at three on may twenty eighth a month before the draft hairs told the kenosha news that chris paul was being considered for the number one. Pick but paul's candidacy disappeared soon after the question is why well. They're a bunch of factors for one. Hair's felt the bucks were set in the back court which in hindsight scenes ridiculous looking back but the bucks had tj ford also a small point guard but someone who had back issues that sidelined him for the entire four five season also. He was their lottery. Pick just two years prior. So it's rare to see teams go with a similar player so soon in the draft. The also had charlie bell and mo williams who average ten in six the prior season and then there was michael. Who who's the breakout star of the team. A shooting guard looking for a max contract as regards all oscar. All so i voice fell. You take the best player throws you gotta look at. It was close. All abandoned. andrew is interviewed. His process is approach. What it was a slam dunk in a slam dunk interview from bogus. Camp slam dunk interview was all part of the plan at the outset of the draft process. Andrew bogut agent. David bauman came up with a strategy. Treat this process like a job interview at a big time bank or prestigious law firm. That will win over. Here's bogut default watery we we basically and wrote a letter so most of the teams in the lottery at least the ones that i liked him wanted to go to eight nine contains run maleta saying good luck in the lottery. Wish you all the best and that went down really well at my age ago. Bohm's never seen this ever. We put together a strategy of showing up to these draft workout in meetings as a business of your rights are my agent. How main we rub a resume a on a job interview right. So we're not showed up for the meetings with both teams with james in the earners. A put prepared resume for him to read a shop in a suit and tie and treat it like a like a job interview ryan and i'm used it. We knew that guys wouldn't do that. And it worked the tree because senator call was owner of the walkie. Box vilma politician former senator of Wisconsin so we knew carl. I didn't take it for my agent news. That would play a be potting. Just that human-to-human contact in relationship. It worked. yeah i'd say it worked all right not yet matters where to wear supertalk sit down across basically obscure four page pamphlet saying why the number one enlisted out every swalec. There you go. It's so we sat down with him. He's like i'm here to be the number one. That's why you don't wanna take yours. I mean it. Basically was interviewed but andrew. His approach work is if he still headed a on and that was it the buck knew right then and there that they found their guy. There's a certain agents kind of prep player a little bit more. I haven't seen resume thing before. That was unique. But i have senior people higher than wear battered like a brogden company. Didn't get like okay. This is real you america head. I'm here unserious. In this case the corporate america strategy sealed the deal. The bucks kept marvin williams in the running as a sort of a smokescreen. The thinking was they'd get more trade offers. If teams weren't convinced they were taking bogut but the die was cast. The bucks decided not to bring in chris. Paul or darren williams even for a workout or just a meeting bogus. Corporate america strategy had paid off. It made an impact.

"About what happened on june. Twenty eight th two thousand five new york city or i guess. I should say what didn't happen. No the milwaukee bucks did not select chris paul number one overall in two thousand and five instead. They went with utah. Stand out the astrology. And big man. Andrew bogut but now as chris paul and the milwaukee bucks battle for the title. It's important to remember that sixteen years ago. The bucks passed on chris. Paul even though he in some circles was considered the best player in the draft. A six foot point guard who dominated the acc and showed a distinct mastery of the game. And looking back. I wanted to know why. Why did the bucks pass on chris paul and not just them why a bunch of teams did paldon go number one number two or number three. He would slide a fourth for the new orleans. Hornets picked him the three teams ahead of new orleans milwaukee atlanta and utah. Who traded up to take portland spot. Decided paul was not the right guy. Atlanta at number two took unc. Reserve williams at three. Utah was so confident. That paul wasn't the best point guard in the draft that they traded their six pick their twenty-seventh pick and a future first rounder to portland so they could grab illinois point guard darren williams of course paul would go on to have a hall of fame career and appear on twice as many all. Nba teams as the rest of the two thousand five draft class combined. The chris paul dean williams was a thing a decade ago. It's clear now that was by far the best player of that draft. So why did the bucks field bogue. It was the right number one pick. There were obvious pluses here. A skilled seven footer. Who won naismith player of the year at utah and held his own as a teenager against. Tim duncan in the two thousand four olympics in athens. But it's not quite that simple two days after winning the lottery in two thousand. Five milwaukee bucks. Gm larry harris told reporters that they were considering three players. Andrew bogut marvin williams and chris paul. Initially paul was in the running but soon after that he was crossed off the list. Why well there's more to this story than just basketball. The man that made the decision for the bucks was their. Gm larry harris who is now in the golden state warriors front office as the director of player personnel. I wanted to know what was the process behind that pick today. No bogut was the guy all along or did something happened. That separated him from the pack. And let's back up here for a second the bucks getting the number one pick was a story of itself after finishing with thirty wins. The bucks only had six point three percent chance of getting the top prize but harris brought some lucky charms to the draft lottery night a fishing lure and a bracelet given by bucks fans on lottery night they jumped past five teams to get number one overall. Here's hairs on what that was like. I remember the when when it finally called. Now milwaukee bucks having number.

"Into another edition of mystery create. I'm chris wittingham. Joined this week by tom haberstroh. Who is going to present. What is now. We theme here. Metal arc media at lebatardshow friends. Which is he's kind of pieces. These essays that are built up by immensely talented roster of reporters writers broadcasters. You've heard from kate fagan. You've heard from howard. Brian and you've heard from time haberstroh as well throughout the nba playoffs. And you want to close with one more piece from tom and not only has gone and done like a whole written thing. There's guests in this. This is like a full on reported piece. And tom will welcome you in now. I'm sensing a theme here because the last one you did was on chris. Paul and this one is also about chris paul now he happens to be going very far in the nba playoffs. But is there. Perhaps a special connection between the two of you. We went to college together. It's a small school. So you kinda wake. Forest university is like the second smallest d one school in america and so it kind of feels like high school. Sometimes when you're a student there. I've actually been to wake forest before. I visited the campus before. I love wake forest. Isn't it beautiful camps. Incredible one of my favorite stops in the acc. I probably went to like half the schools in my travels with university of miami. One of the best. I definitely recommend it. Yeah one of the saddest days of me. Being students was seeing chris. Paul like into campus with a brand new car because you know what that meant. He was going to the nba time. And so it's always been a special place in my heart is understanding. You know what happened after that. Is chris paul announces. He's going to the nba draft. He foregoes his junior and senior year. And he doesn't become the number one. Pick and i think a lot of people on campus expected him to be the number one pick and of course he has this amazing career and i just. I been fascinated by that story of chris who dominated the acc and was the number one team in the nation for a while and he was on the cover of espn the magazine at this tiny school in the acc. And i've always the back of my mind. Wondered why chris paul didn't go number one or number two or number three in the two thousand and five draft so i kind of pitched it. I asked some people around me you know. Would this be an interesting story and people took to it. So i dug it started reporting on it. I asked andrew bogut if he'd be game to talk about it and this guy is game to talk about anything. Andrew bogut number. One pick that year so i kind of appealing back the curtain and learning more it and what it told me was really. Chris is like it's a look into the draft process. And how you can fall prey to some of the cognitive bias sees or you know when you when you think you know a player and then you go and you meet them you kind of have this job interview thing that happens and i think the milwaukee bucks when they drafted andrew bogut were just head over heels for this guy but the other thing that happened was they didn't even take a meeting with chris. Paul so that kind of mystery to me. I always wanted to know what happened there. And so i- embarked on this journey to find out and we'll get to the peace in a second but like obviously as a white guy. You're probably i would imagine something of a chris. Paul stan right. You're probably always like kind of wondering how come you didn't get his. Do i kind of wondering. Obviously on the lebatardshow. Stu gods always having to go chris paul. He's kind of like the avatar criticism but he's not really the only one right when you consider you know kind of his career arc going from not really being respected enough and really as chat four. We'll tell you in this piece. It probably comes down to a size while he wasn't really respected properly but even throughout his career writing these bazaars stops all these folks and the rover could have gone to the lakers. He went through a terrible ownership situation. In new orleans went a hurricane that displays him to oklahoma city. They went to oklahoma city. Had all these bizarre pairings and now has taken. The phoenix suns the nba finals. How does this store that. You're about to kind of fit within the narrative arc of his career. He's gotten. I don't think a fair shake in the media about a why they keep falling short in the playoffs. And i think a lot of the things that people attribute to andrew bogut or in the interview process to andrew bogut. They attribute to chris. Paul a lot of the same characteristics leadership maturity and professionalism all these things and when someone loses in the tournament or loses in the playoffs routinely year after year. I think it lends itself to a certain narrative or tidy little sentence about how he's a fraud or that he's always injured and he's injured quite a bit no doubt about it but i think we take it a little too far. Sometimes where we read into these wins and losses or injuries or luck on either side and have it reveal something about someone's inner character like it's a reflection of whether he's a good person or whether he has that gene that clutch gene that playoff gene. And i think. We're over writing that on chris paul also. I think it's probably a little bit of that. Napoleon complex that wake people have that where we're just of punching up all the time and literally chris paul is punching in the story that we're about to tell and i feel like a lot of that a lot of that feeling that you're counted out and people don't respect to you. I think is part of the chris. Paul story so stugatz when he says those things i get it because it is kinda weird. It's strange for a guy that good at basketball to not win a title or make the conference finals until just a couple of years ago and now we're seeing man is so hard to win a title and things are definitely on the precipice for him like a two series. Things could go either way and he is definitely in one of the darker moments of the season trying to crawl out of this bad game for and we are recording this before game five. This'll be published before game five of the nba finals. So we hope This story will last long enough for for at least to be of interest to you. We at the very least we get to tuesday in the nba finals. And so for me. Chris paul is by far the most compelling character remaining in the nba postseason. Obviously honest is up there but chris. Paul has just gone through so much in his career. And we're going to go all the way to the beginning tom. Haberstroh has reported a piece. On how exactly. He didn't become the number one overall pick in the nba draft. Stu gods here for our friends over at draftkings. I love draftkings. I spent all my time there seriously. I have my mail.

"That and we certainly have a long conversation while touchy is surrounded by by bugs. Going to hate no series. Leave me behind. i'm seriously proud of you. Know really this is important. You need to know this. Yeah long conversation between the fat that that was very cute. Little footage of taichi. Battling anything before we just stopped combat to have this conversation that i said physics into seventeen minutes left kosher. Said we've got twenty minutes last. Time is ever maybe evolution's equator. The oakland won evolution. Everyone else's evolutions real time. But the i don't know quicker in real life times anyway time time. On sept any other lines are tired of times. Stop it like third or fourth time. We've done it and suck not is truly speed. Never megamall this time. It was no or lot modern this episode so it was not very good. That is true a lot one being there is like a sign of a good plot and so as a plot plot. One hasn't shown up yet. Just how subplot one. Time me too. Think portland shows up once in the original only. Yeah i liked. And i liked the plot anyway speaking of characters that we like family. He's mullah akin to a low line the struck by lightning and coming down the made to get one even flinched real. Every episode gruden on burst into flames and seora is fine so i'm fine with being electrocuted. And shrugging it off just shy of bertram of being hit by lightning and just doing nothing we had like. Do you like everyone. Attack it into middle graham on wall tied. She was riding metal game against the all shot into the mouth while ty was there and he just went gras. I apologize. I little down this week more than maybe the episode deserves but god this week sucked and sometimes it be that way this week the week this week and the episode. Yeah yeah the rest of my life has been terrible this week and also did you was only okay. Yeah but. I hope that you're going to pick a character that's Character and not list concept as written who's best rainforest to pick it. No i think by law we onto favorite characters. Yeah sure okay. Mine was kosher. Roy because it costs was tied. She had no character. End kosher actually had a character and also floated through spicing galaxy brian. So i'm just going to pick kosher av. Do you know who you were picking. Quinn's pick i. i can't look quaint. I guess tale mon for being the best animated and kind of snarky and acknowledging that the that that would just talking about random things through to chekhov's gun evolutions again. Yeah and also why tell one always like consistently the best animated because his and we don't have to animate truth here this way but you think. Ugh amman is easy to draw. It is also just one character. Doesn't need any.

That's what made that had amazing. Who costings if you can do all of those things online. You would definitely do them like you sleep. Download cards called hooper. i think also i described yuba also describe described disturbed. Doing already come with a. I described the the dot net as well anyway. Anyway so back to the episode kosher sees that the pill formed after battle between some huge digital and the top of the pillar is a singularity and it's outside the digital. It's breaking into the network pont and that's how they can communicate to the human world and i'm sitting here going all. This would be a really great like way that they can go back to the human world when they need to go back at the end of the season so i wonder if this pillow will ever be relevant again man kind of just yet home but i felt like you. Won't they just took them home like i'm mad that we haven't eaten at burger jack. Also bring me a burger anthony. Why have you not bought me a pirker yet. Everett's does exist. Yeah pets like three in the morning and there's a blizzard to anyone forgot the blizzards exist. Yeah actually against activision blizzard's i was gonna say it's a dairy queen but you know who we hung hungry. Jack's has storms anyway. What made me has just with all the money that she has from the fight club. She's just opened up a baggage. Jack like digital world franchise and that's like a future job in this universe works with her future things being a chef. If she just show world slash for that would be. How would that that would be the best. Everything to do with. Oakland's like i just and then and then she gets on instead of like so much evolution to fit the circumstances it's perfect. We wrote the season of ditching hot. You're welcome and she's just she's in the high school gang and she's got like you know the the mas gone like step on yet like that's the best anyway bill. Yes pillar law the pillar of light in the room Yes so cochrane says that the data that is distorted by digital and can also be fixed by it and then explain how we're going to divert the satellite rather than destroying them. And i know that must have been thinking about like service. Because i wrote i s instead of i s s so many times in my notes so this any twenty minutes until the is pastas through the sniper point. Thanks i meant the iss. Anyway so we signed up. They could shoot. Yeah and we're going to devote a few minutes To have gone bowling to graham on. And then cochrane says he'll support him. And then i thought this point would get ten to one evolving but instead it's just graham onto middle ground which takes up a minute of their time and then we've got be on pat him on and tend to moan bowling quickly beams of light and then coach..

"And i'm like dude. Anyway we have taylor on then basically saying and this is just may running down not for what she said but my interpretation of it. Hey we should probably do a plot instead and address the giant voloshin the room. In the why. It's let me pull it up. Because i have the screenshot Yeah it's it's good. It's a good one and is bathed spicy. What she says because she's like. Hey let's do. I think what's important pillar of light yankee. Know what she got me like me to. Everyone's just like completely distracted by the today some willed the weird thing to okay just execution wise. It is so weird that we stop to talk about the dinosaurs before we stop talking about the the bones and i know we always forget about the bones but there was a giant pillar of white tail. Mont has to be just exasperated by these children. Yeah they're just talking about random things that are probably a boring topic literally tail mud just has to go. Yeah no this world is still a world things happen. Sometimes like i love this. I love this taught. Like i'm really into it and really wish that any of this. Yeah basically like it was definitely a highlight of my of the episode for both the world building pot and then account saying hey kids while we talk about will's building who cares we've got plot to happen. It's it's great so much. I love tale monteiro monzo walking dictionary. Now i don't know why will and also i'd like to point out that i don't think he carried talks entire episode. She's not allowed to have character. No basically tell tale mon is her character and you know it's better than nothing like tailwinds actually kind of great like we just have. Whoever is no. He only which is fine. I'm fine and then we have hirsch ray saying sorry i'll let you move on. Yeah no knee. He can continue if you want. I was just making some jokes. So let's move on with a good though they dump. Drug-fuelled this podcast. Sometimes that's true. This guy was on fire and then we started recording woke up. I did a little bit. But you should kansas episode. Because i'm only doing it by habit and just alive because i'm talking about virtual pets as soon as like i. I sleep until ritual. Pets mentioned mostly because i think most nights i forget to meet my digital and and all of a sudden they start involving in the middle of the night. I'm just like well what's what's happening. What's happening especially when they decide to die and it's just a high pitched beep i'm factor. You don't actually need sleep. Studies you just need to get them all muted them and then like. But then i'd sleep. I sleep i sleep. I sleep a whole time. So at least i have something waking me then my babies i really like virtual pets. Okay my personality now anyway so we in virtual pets are sometimes more than seven dollars running like burt for you. How would you even. What other even twi once i. Yes i earn one hundred thirty seven one hundred fifty or something. I don't know he's wrong with you. One what's wrong with me. You have a dog may not you don't you have. I don't see that the way he would vest. In devices i title. You have a house hells but also when we go to women contents insurance. My partner was like so. We'll cy grant digital collection. "But anyway i just i really liked the virtual pets. I really think they're cool. And the reason i don't hate this on showing up is because it's kind of nice to have him debut in the anime and i hope that we are not going to get like two more alternative solutions and be done forever and i guess not having checked the vp. I guess i can't be certain that there isn't more from there. But i still have to thank god to be another version coming because if this season is about few things if tot selling merchandise Well on the digitized colon toy there was split screaming that was one of the digital that i mentioned but also the The colony by didn't have ultra snowden sagittarius mode. Sure so that's sort of thing It's not one to one what's showing up in the show but is enough really close. Yeah like what basically saying everything that. I've not wanting to mention out of fear of spoilers. The other one being pegasus none and noblest graham on. So i guess with everything is showing up in a way still not sure about the other one. I kind of remember. I said the other one because i wasn't sure if it was actually spoil or a reference to the original dramatic amount of but just in case i'm not gonna mention it but yet anyway. So do the xp regulator which is again a ref probably a reference to the original device. Where you unlocked vigil molly be connected to the digital analyze a toy anyway. I have a lot of knowledge about virtual pets and digital electric's probably a lotta sports at least six different digitises. So many and i'm supposed to pretend to care about any of them. And i i'm so sorry. They're in their their diff this. They're two different series of virtual pets. That are coming up next month. One is digital and fitbit and you can get offers v german and i'm going to be the fittest of the digital on tamers and i'm going to have forced pager mon. I'm just so and the other one also has a dragon fruit digital which is the best thing ever and also ancient ours. One also group of heart that evolved to vadim on had a good day anyway so yet that that was attention. I like virtual pets surprise. Surprise talk about them. Basically every time. Who does it's a little little secret. I mentioned basically said on this cordelia like this episode is bad. I'm just going gonna talk about virtual pets. And this wasn't terrible..
