Will the Boston Bruins Ever Fix Their Power Play?
"Those practices that burns will have, I imagine a large portion, it's going to be devoted to fixing that power play, just because it's been stuck in a rough way for a long time, I think since April 8th, the Bruins have six total power-play goals and four of them have come from Craig Smith. And and another one is kind of stupid crazy. I mean, you can make the case. You like just from the I test that the second unit has looked a lot better than the first for a long, long time now. So they have to do something to to get that first pulp a unit rolling. Whether it's worth switching a Personnel or Bruce Cassidy is always identified troubles with entries as being a thing that's really going to hurt that top power-play unit over the last month. So I think they've got to really kind of fix that and not make it be you know I don't think you want you expect you to jump from where it is right now to all Cynthia not top three unit again right. I don't think you're going to have that whether it's just like it's not the cards at guys on exit game. I'm gonna Torey Krug. Yeah, yeah, exactly. I don't think either you're going into it. Expecting them to cash in on, you know, thirty percent of their chances, but you're still need more than the output. You're getting off. Because I think you know, right now the Bruins is, the deadline are outscoring teams at even-strength 37 to 15, which is crazy. It's crazy that there there's going this many of the 2011 Bruins now, where it's like, wow, they're, you know, they're dissecting teams on even strain for them to hopefully, kills, all the momentum. Pretty much been the case for a month now. So if you even get that power-play back to, you know, 20% over this this long stretch, it goes a whole a long way. Especially in the playoffs, in terms of Just Landing more punches against the opponent's. So I think in terms of x's and o's power plays probably stands out the most to me. Yeah.
From Twitter to Palantir, Losses in Technology Stocks Stack Up
"On the one side. The reason highflyers crashing back to earth. They just check out. These moves fastly. Fc twilla draftkings all plunging. Those names now down at least thirty percent from their all-time highs on the other side the old school value name cisco ibm dow oracle not just today but many are trading at or near all time highs so in this tech tug o war. What side do you bet on dan. Well right now. It seems pretty clear. I mean the pandemic winners right some of these high valuation high growth names that were really well situated during just the unique situation during the pandemic they pulled forward a lot of demand here and now they're faced with decelerating metrics forward on all sorts of occasions. You have fastly down there. Facet was down twenty five percent today. It's still trades at about ten times next year sales so the demand and the pace in which these companies were growing in last year into this year are just not sustainable at these valuations. I throw a whole nother group though in their mail. We've seen some huge. Ipo's over the last six months or so airbnb. Door dash snowflake pailin tear and those stocks are down thirty forty percent from their recent highs. And they'd be more comparable to the oracle the dell the ibm and the cisco and i do think that as a really interesting relationship here that you're seeing rotation out of these high valuation names into cheap names that are more stable that don't have the growth just a bit more defensive here.
The Epic Court Battle That Could Upend Apple's Future
"Talked on the show before about developer fees. Those are the commission's usually around thirty percent. That app store owners take from purchases made through their marketplaces. Some developers have pushed back against these fees. Saying there too high while store owners like apple and google have argued that the fees are necessary to keep transactions secure. This debate is the subject of a court battle between apple and the creator of fortnight epic games which kicks off today. The outcome of the trial will have ramifications for apple. And the rest of the tech giant's so for more on this. I'm joined by our apple reporter tim higgins. Hey tim thanks for being here. Thank you all right before we get started we should note that the wall street journal's publisher dow jones has a commercial agreement to supply news apple services. Okay so tim can. You remind us how we got to the trial that starts today. There's actually quite a dramatic backstory. Here right now. This is a clash of the titans. If you will it goes back to last august and the creator of fortnight epic games surprised a lot of people with an update to the fort game on the apple app store that aim to create a payment system. That would get around apple's payment system. They'll allow users to go into an epic games created pay system and that was a huge violation of apple's rules and it resulted in fortnight being booted from the app store and what followed was a pretty big legal battle that we now are seeing take place in a courtroom in oakland california and so as the court case. Kicks off today like you said in oakland. What's really the central question of this case. What is this all about. There's a few things going on here. Epic feels that apple is using. Its power anti competitive way specifically. They argue that apple has this delivery device or distribution device for apps on iphones and that it's one hundred percent controlled by them and that that is a monopoly in a bad sense and that they're misusing that power so what this case comes down to a large way is the definition of what a market is in the digital
Apple, Epic Games' Antitrust Trial to Begin Monday
"Of apple versus epic games. We've been talking about it. All year finally begins monday monday. Monday third presided over by judge. Yvonne gonzalez rogers of the united states district court for the northern district of california. The case was brought by epoch after it tried to offer an alternative way of paying for in game purchases in fortnight earlier this year apple removed the game from the app store. The case will evaluate whether the sherman act's definition of a monopoly in the united states applies to an operating systems app store. Epic would like the right to offer. Its own app store on us as well as also be able to offer alternative payment methods within its apps distributed through. Apple's app store if epic. Were to win this case that would lead developers offer their own in app payment systems and possibly force apple to allow side loaded apps or even alternative app stores now in the case. Here's some of the arguments to be on the lookout for apple's going to argue that competition is and should be among devices not within the os and apple's going to argue that. The app store is an integral part of its operating system and that changing that would make the device worse which is not the aim of antitrust law and that making it offer alternate app stores would be like forcing it to sell iphones with chips other than its own a series or something like that epochs going to point to the mac which has an app store but also allows for other ways of buying and selling software and say. Why is it so integral on the phone and not integral on your laptop. Apple's going to point to game consoles like the playstation and the xbox which have a thirty percent commission and don't offer alternate stores and say that's the industry standard. We're just doing what they do.

Q1 Tesla Earnings Report and Shareholder Letter Analysis
"Our here and today we're going to go through with tesco's earnings report. They just reported earnings. They did deliver a beat reading through all the numbers here and then a couple of takeaways from the call and then we'll also after this livestream head into the earnings call and will livestream that as well. I'll take notes so make sure to check that out the link for that will be in the show notes but let's get into the numbers here so starting off with top line here we can see tussles. Total sales came in at just over ten point. Three billion ten point three eight nine billion as a little bit ahead of analysts consensus a little bit ahead of my numbers but basically in the right ballpark. We did see kind of a mixed. Though in between the categories automotive sales came in about where we expected but a lot of that was driven by regulatory credits. So tesla actually new record for regulatory credit sales. Quarter almost half. A billion dollars of fifty. Four percent more than expected for six percent higher than last year Fifty nine percent higher than what i had expected with three hundred twenty five million so that means that my average selling prices my forecast there were a little bit high. And tesla made up the difference there with regulatory credit sales energy sales so just about half a billion dollars there in revenue little bit below where the street had forecasted twelve percent below Thirty percent below where i had forecasted but still quite a bit of an improvement over year over year up seventy percent so if we look down here we can see that the reason i'm zoom in a little bit here. The reason that that happened was because tess only Four hundred and forty five megawatt hours of energy storage versus We look at you for almost three times more than three times that amount. So tesla definitely saw drop there in terms of energy storage That is leading to that lower revenue in energy sales. They also lost quite a bit of money on energy. You can see negative twenty percent gross margin there. That's definitely the lowest that we've ever seen from tesla and continues the down trend that we've been seeing for the last four quarters so not a great sign there but as we've seen tesla did raise the price on solar roof there now knowing solar with power wall. So they're doing a lot of things here to improve their profitability here. But we just haven't seen that come to fruition quite yet so hopefully over the next couple of quarters. Tessa can get that figured out. Because i was about one hundred million dollar drag on prophet which is pretty significant when we look at tesla's overall profitability
Apple and Facebook Are All Ears
"Okay fair warning. We are about to get a bit meta this. Podcast episode is about the future of podcasts and why to tech companies apple and facebook are plunging feet first into the audio pool recruits. Peter kafka's. you're talking about. Hey peter so over the last couple of weeks there's been a bunch of talk about how big tech companies are getting into audio. There's apple and facebook. Let's start with apple which has more experience in this space. Tell me what apple is doing in the world. Podcasts apple mostly created the market for podcasts. And i say that knowing that people in the madame because apple did not technically invent podcasts. But they're the ones who sort of brought it to the mainstream back in two thousand five and then they pretty much left it alone. They have not tried to do much with podcasting. They have not assigned many people They haven't put much resources toward it and they haven't tried to make any money and now that's changing a little bit. They are going to allow individual podcast creators and publishers to sell subscriptions to podcast within apple. And so there might be a sm- they're gonna say smallish business. I think it's gonna be a huge business but it's gonna be something for apple so they've gone for making no money on it to making potentially some money so apple's going basically take a cut of podcast revenue that's made by a show host or pretty sure is that is that right. That's exactly right. It's the same same model. They have for apps and services like hp max etcetera. The publisher over makes the thing keeps seventy percent. Apple keeps thirty percent if you keep doing it for more than a year that cut goes to eighty five and fifteen

Sometimes Something Is Worse Than Nothing
"Is better than nothing. Anything is better than nothing or so. The story goes but on heater core. Nonsense and gibberish on that one. And don't get me wrong. I totally agree with the sentiment. The intent is give it a try. Have a crack drew do something try anything rather than just do nothing. But when the finished product of your attempt of you're trying turns out to be rubbish. Then don't release it to the world. Don't publish launch it. Because in doing that what you're saying to the world is i'm okay with this. I'm okay with rubbish. I m okay with this sub-standard product and a case in point. Every morning. i walk past the conference lobby of a five star luxury hotel. And it's all glass at the front so you can see inside and recently. They've been working on upgrading their digital signboard. And what they've done is they've made it about twenty five or thirty percent wider than it was before and a few days ago they finish the job pulled down. All the hoarding turned on the screen. But they've used graphics from before they've used the graphics and images that were formatted for a smaller screen. And so what happens now on the biggest green all those images are distorted and out of proportion and somebody has still decided that something is better than nothing better that we put something up there rather than put nothing up there. And i would argue that. That's not correct. They would have been much better off. Turn the screen off. We're taking down those graphics and having nothing out there rather than having shop they rather than having that sub-standard result because it certainly doesn't look luxury certainly doesn't look five star but somebody has decided something is better than nothing and i would argue that sometimes. Somethings actually worse than nothing.
Why Tech Visionary Irma Olguin Jr. Went Back to Her Farming Roots
"Year junior turned a lot of heads when she raised twenty seven million dollars in series a funding and incredible amount of money and the largest ever for a lengthy her company bit wise trains people to work in tech. It develops software and invest in real estate. The whole concept is inspired by parts of your own personal journey and offers really powerful model for rebuilding and reimagining underdog cities. It must so much of we are we built. Goes back to where you come from. Can you take me back to growing up in the central valley in the nineties. When folks extra california they think palm trees they think of beaches. That can come hollywood. I think of the bay area but a lot of people don't conjure an image of when it comes to central california is like giant magnificent loss of produce in atalante. They may not realize that the central valley inside california's responsible for exporting between twenty and thirty percent of the world's food agriculture has been the driving industry here since these cities were born. And think that that really is what people think of. Like heartland america i think of cornfields and buckeyes and i'm talking about grapes and almonds and teaches cows. You know just a different image. I think than than what most people think of as california so when you imagine yourself there in the nineties or you're managing yourself. They're here in in central california two things to know number one that creates a system where almost like modern day feudalism where the folks who own operate the land really. That's where wealth is concentrated. And then i think secondly is that there's another side of that coin which is the labor that powers the land and gets that land to produce

"You can't go from talking about your taxes and your work and your kids whether or not. Your dog had a bowel movement on. Its last walk to just flipping the switch and being ohi tear my clothes off and my joke is when i say this is your daily interactions. I don't mean make everything annoyingly erotic right. I don't wanna be eating a banana and have brennan look over and be like. Oh yeah bowl year. Anti talk is really more about playfulness and flirtation. And i don't know all these different ways to be erotic. It doesn't have to be super sexual or graphic so we're gonna be getting into that. I guess before we do. I should ask you. Do you feel like our interactions are particularly erotic. I don't think that i'm an erotic person. Feels very self-conscious. Whenever i'm trying to do something that i think is erotic whether i've seen it on. Tv movie somewhere. I feel like a goof doing it so when i see people who are genuinely erotic and they just exude the sex appeal. I'm good on you. Because when i try that i feel like i look like a goof. A good hey. No you are naturally charming. Like thirteen is sort of charming. You may not be overtly sexual about it yes. I also wonder if you haven't had to be because people like the way you look so much. Well maybe i don't know perhaps going on you know you've got certainly not the words sir say. I don't think that's entirely true. But i i would say that we've been getting along really well. I would agree. I feel like we laugh a lot and we're playful superfund psyche. Laughing all day. 'cause my jokes are better than yours and then you just repeat my jokes louder. That's the trick everyone listening. Just say the joke louder and be a man. It'd be a white man and then everyone thinks you're hilarious and so yeah. I think this'll be an interesting conversation to go through and see what we do. And don't do because i've made this list for us of twenty ways to keep the flame burning to make your daily interactions more rock not necessarily to lead to sex all the time. So the reason i feel all of these things laid the groundwork so that sex becomes possible like it doesn't make sex automatic. It just means that. Like i can easily get in the mood with you because i like you because i laugh with you because you laugh at my jokes really loudly. Okay before we dive into these twenty ways. Apple Could Crush Earnings Estimates
"Apple reports march quarter earnings in a couple of weeks. That means it's time for notes to start trickling in from the financial front offering ideas on how the numbers will look barons. "Had a thirty percent buffer on your investment either the market went down it was down twenty percent after year and you're not you know what I'm struck the first thirty percent I'm not going to lose I'm sure it'll come back where five years now it's not down more than thirty percent from five years ago right yet go down thirty percent a year but I have time for that to come back and I know that was thirty percent offer so you must you're much less likely to sell prematurely now we have a buffer so give you like training wheels on your investment ability okay there's also barriers barriers differ from buffers because unlike buffers where the first thirty or twenty or whatever percentage you don't lose a barrier you know it's the same thing you don't lose the first twenty thirty percent but once the barrier is breached you lose the full loss but on the upside you can get much much more leverage we done leveraged notes where you actually get a hundred eighty percent of the games of the lower the Dow Jones or the S. and P. five hundred these are backed by major banks Goldman Sachs Morgan Stanley Barclays and so if you feel like we are gonna recover and you not only want to aggressively participate a rebound and make up your losses but you also want some downside protection okay come back every year note can do that because if you don't think that for years now five years and that we're gonna be thirty percent lower than we are today then you can use a barrier no instead of a buffer note to get even more upside so it depends obviously on your risk tolerance stock market gives you one percent of the upside and one hundred percent of the upside under some of the downside you buy ETFs you can sell whatever you want buffer notes and our notes they give you potentially more the upside and less downside you're exchanging after credit risk of the bank if the issuing bank goes out of business you are their creditor you could lose money on that end of it but for some people the credit risk of a bank going out of business is more palatable than the stock market going down make sense so this is a great strategy for people who are looking to take advantage of the rebound indexed annuities can be really good if you get the right ones there are some good ones there's a lot of bad once you really have to be careful but if you want to know how do we how do we conservatively try to participate a rebound while protecting our principal either fully or partially we're good at that we know how.

"What he's doing Johnson take a three year strategy to court over the past five weeks at the markets tanked yeah everybody's been looking at their portfolios and and I'm certainly among them over the past five weeks but the biggest thing that I've been doing is rebalancing my portfolio to everybody who is the best in the market should have target percentages for how much they have installed how much they haven't bonds and even within the stocks and say how much you have in the U. S. and how much you haven't far and so for me my mix is thirty percent bonds thirty percent thirty five percent U. It makes no sense to me. I would like to just buy one of those huge bags of dog food and serve it. But I think their food per meal costs more than it costs me to eat off the value menu. At a fast food restaurant. But I digress. And when somebody tells my wife just said that I'm going to be in so much trouble. I don't even know what to say to you. This is a real problem. But because a lot of times people are spending big money on designer pet food when it's actually not necessary. So I wanna tell you about a website for dogs because dogs are the biggest.

"Thirty one percent lonzo ball thirty percent stevenson thirty percent ingram thirty three percent and cow mel let's generously give him thirty seven percent thirty six point six so essentially all those shooters that lebron does with the penetration which gives them wide open looks only one of those guys right now shooting at the league average not not at a great clip at the league average this seems less than ideal well it definitely does but again i don't think this team was going to be challenging this year for the title so it's about acquiring those one year contracts and quite honestly with with the iq of rondo was certainly the iq of lebron these young players can really learn a lot this year that's that's what i would look for is the growth of the young players not just in playing minutes but in actual awareness on the court things to look for those little things that you can pick up the little things that when you're young player and i don't care what sport it is that you can learn from a watching tape be watching tape with a veteran who knows what the hell they're looking for and can point things out that you as a young player don't always see as long as the players can open their mind you know and and their eagles enough to say i can learn from these people to listen to them watching film to listen to them when you're at practice watch what they're doing that some of the best ways that you can learn that's not an old man on the porch thing that's something that that that spans time you the young players can always learn from veteran to do it the right way and can give you the little not even tricks of the trade just the maturity of the game and the game so that's what i would look for these young players to really mature in that aspect of it and i and i think that can help them but let me ask you this question because we talk about this all the time in football your accuracy she doesn't usually go up from college to the pros as a quarterback you pretty much are what you are with very few exceptions okay so do we believe by learning some of this stuff and having lebron there are they going to become better shooters i know magic johnson right famously in his career didn't have a jump shot came back one summer got a jump shot and i think that you went on to win his first mvp award because he had the outside game to go with the inside game do we think these guys can become better i mean any young player you have to believe what he is now can be different in a couple of years do do do do we if not i mean we're going to give up on lonzo ball on marquel fulltime ben simmons as far as shooting is concerned i mean you have to give them some time to see if an improved are they ever going to become the greatest shooters i have no idea what you're going to get in la because lebron led the league in assists two three wide open three pointers and we know that's what he can do is open the floor up so you get a wide open look now the players still have to knock him down and how many times did you clench your teeth in cleveland praying to god someone would knock down and open three and too many times you saw the miss but cleveland usually was up there you know pretty good in three point shooting the lakers aren't so to your point they gotta get better at shooting and i don't know if you magically become better but when the when the system changes around you maybe that all helps i honestly don't know we're going to find out and as i say but as i said if this team finished fourth this year four four a tenth last year there were tend to the west the fourth and the fifth seed and they maybe get knocked out in the first round maybe win the first round a laker fans happy well it's an improvement well given the fact that everybody knows now what they're going to be laying out for for next next june in the off season yeah well surely you can't be serious if you think the lakers will be happy with the first house there you go and speaking of shirley it was thirty eight years ago this week one of the greatest movies of all time was.
