Amanda factor here with a cold morning translations of the other steps the grand princess cruise ship that has twenty one people on board with corona virus is expected to arrive in Oakland today California governor Gavin Newsom says reports being prepared and the area secured with the entire process to remove passengers expected to take two to three days former FDA commissioner says now is a crucial time in the fight against the virus on CBS's face the nation Dr Scott Gottlieb said the next two weeks are key and he adds that the next two months will probably be difficult with the closing closing of of businesses businesses and and schools schools Gottlieb Gottlieb did did offer offer reassurance reassurance saying saying quote quote we'll we'll get get through through this this another another former former democratic democratic presidential presidential candidate candidate is is endorsing endorsing Joe Joe Biden Biden in a video on Twitter California senator Kamilla Harris threw her support behind the former vice president saying quote I believe in joke we need a leader who really does care about the people and who can therefore unify the people and I believe Joe can do that and with us right now was ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts Steve what a difference a week makes it did you anticipate Joe Biden picking up this mode the momentum this quickly no I have not I don't think anybody did I I think what we're what we're seeing though is a fascinating phenomena based on one word and that word is fear it's fear of Donald Trump and fear of Bernie Sanders Joe Biden has not been reborn as some useful charismatics move talking energetic candidates Joe Biden today is still the same Joe Biden that people have a lot of doubts about two weeks ago two months ago two years ago the difference is that Democrats have so desperate so frantic to find somebody who can beat Donald Trump that they decided that day either as a group and individually as voters and as candidates they'll camel Harris being an example of of having to rally around somebody and then choosing between Biden and Sanders the fear of Bernie Sanders is pulling the party too far to the left so there's a lot of energy around the Biden candidacy right now but in my view it's largely negative energy it's driven by fear it's driven by desperation there are not a lot of Democrats even this morning jumping up and down in Saint Joe Biden's gonna be a great candidate a great president but this negative energy is very powerful and that's what's driving this trend do you think it's now his to lose or is it too early to say that definitely has to lose end up and I think it's gonna be very difficult for Bernie Sanders to rebound here the one variable of course the one no wild card is by himself as I say he has not been report he's still the guy who can show astounding lapses of judgment he's still the guy who could make gaffes he's still the guy who can show his age very clearly he's still the guy who can appear fumbling and uncertain and in debates with Bernie Sanders and interviews it's still entirely possible for him to make damaging mistakes I think a lot of Democrats even if they rally around by they're holding their breath and hoping that Biden will get its act together and I've seen some signs a few signs of Byton improving on the stop I think he's shown a little bit more energy I think the campaign line about I'm the candidate of those who have been left behind it counted out is a defective and powerful line really echoes of a bill to written of nineteen ninety two the comeback kid although Biden's hardly a kid he's more the comeback teaser than the comeback kid and also this line of of of appealing to the concepts of dignity and civility and normalcy I think they provide a fairly stark contrast to the president who's in the oval office now but Biden is still Biden it was all of his flaws but at this point he's the Democrats best hope and it's gonna be very difficult for Sanders to capture Steve thanks for your thoughts again this morning ABC news political analyst Steve Roberts it's also worth noting that this morning one of the former candidates US senator Cory Booker came out in support of Joe Biden for president the company's time five fifty one seventy two are propelling turns money update writer says Boeing's proposal to leave "Tomorrow morning or automatic about thirty four degrees tomorrow sunny with a high of just fifty six currently forty three degrees in mesa weather brought to you by Howard air for the replace or repair call Howard air I'm Deborah Dale on Arizona's news station K. T. A. R. news hi welcome back it's Katie ours live and local coverage of the state of the union president trump's third state of the union address to the Congress and the United States are very marks and doctor Michael Neil Katie ours political analyst is with us as well and a big show already Mike we've had a congressman striker with this a commission guy a go and and stand all of joined us so far and their reactions fell rather rather predictably along party since high I think so very very partisan Congress right now but the president's speech certainly one of his more positive ones a really trying to highlight what he's done and what he views as his accomplishments over the last three years and positioning himself for this election it was kind of the rank opposite of his inauguration speech where you know it was dark it was midnight in America and everything was just awful when and and creating this obvious contrast of how wonderful it is now after only three years of his presidency there were definitely some areas so that the president touched on a during the speech one of them that we haven't talked about much at is is healthcare here's the president talking a little bit about what he wants to see with healthcare for United States citizens hi good life for American families also requires the most affordable innovative and high quality healthcare system on earth before I took office health insurance premiums said more than doubled in just five years I moved quickly to provide affordable alternatives are new plans are up to sixty percent less expensive and better I'm I'm not really sure where those plans are Mike I had that I find out baffling you know the here's this problem on this one the Democrats on healthcare is an issue obamacare is passed everybody knows that was passed with virtually a hundred percent the Democrat votes and no Republicans and it has become extremely popular and the legislative lay the Republicans after trump guardian tried to basically undermine it they particularly decide try to go after the pre existing condition mandate they failed in doing so but how how we can slip in phrases about well we you know we have to support pre existing conditions that that requires people have selective in danger yeah it's a it's it's going to be a something we hear about a lot this year and it was all positive it's an election year and the president commenting on what many of the democratic presidents running for the president what they're running on which is universal healthcare and what the president calls a socialist takeover of medicine but as we work to improve americans' health care there are those who want to take away your health care take away your doctor and abolish private insurance entirely one hundred and thirty two lawmakers in this room have endorsed legislation to impose a socialist takeover of our healthcare system wiping out the private health insurance plans of one hundred and eighty million very happy Americans to those watching at home tonight I want you to know we will never let socialism destroy American health care you know here's the interesting thing about health care people are deathly afraid of change and that was one of the big obstacles that obamacare hat it was something new and therefore it could be presented as something scary and I think what the Republicans were most afraid of is come about it passed people had a lot of misgivings about it they got they obamacare in and people discovered that they liked it that all the changes they noted were positive now it is the new thing and people are comfortable with that again so if somebody proposes further changes that once again is scary and that's what he's playing offer this scary news of change most people have some kind of insurance whether it private or a bomb the care of Medicare Medicaid they've got something right now and somebody proposed any reform of the system and that the initial reaction is wait a minute hi I don't wanna lose what I got it that was the theme of quite a bit of the state of the union Mike which was the everything's better now right you're better under president trump and you were under president Obama he didn't mention Obama by name which is unusual because he doesn't do that he really does you yeah I was he purposely didn't do that maybe because the speech writers on the staff that let's not do that again but there was no mistaking what he was referring to America's enemies are on the run Americans fortunes are on the rise in America's future is blazing bright the years of economic decay are over I thought that one was pretty interesting you know under president Obama the economy actually moved up more than it is now but yeah it's higher now we start hi I thought but the the constant refrain of we were in a depression we it was now that when I got here and I had to pray even ignoring the fact that depression started in oh seven and we and we throughout eight years of a bomb of they were taken out of it yeah but with the present is correct we mention it out earlier absolutely Connor is very strong I mean it is we are in a very good place as a country and president trump was certain to comment on that during the stay that train was well under way when he took office that that's that conveniently omitted fact even though the statements about are doing well are true he he likes talking about how good it is now though I am thrilled to report to you tonight that our economy is the best it has ever been our military is completely rebuilt with its power being unmatched anywhere in the world and it's not even close our borders are secure our families are flourishing our values are renewed our pride is restored it it sounds like everything's pretty good here my you know was the biggest stretch there was our military is rebuilt if you think about military has very complex systems he's been in office three years if our military has been rebuilt in the last three years Obama did it because you can't you don't turn around the military in a year or two you their their procurement systems for west weapons in the like our multi year operations what we talked about this being a very partisan speech on of the democratic a lot of female Democrat women democratic Congress are women I think it's you he came in dressed in white as they've done it other state of the union's ten Congress of Democrats didn't come for the speech at all and we talked about a little I to be with the president and the speaker of the house Nancy Pelosi were before the speech the speech started president trump took to the day as he handed copies of the speech to the speaker of the house Nancy has either yes and and also to the vice president exactly were sitting high above him and then shook hands with the vice president as speaker Pelosi extended her hand here see pictures of this everywhere now it's in her hand and the president had looked at it and and turned away did not shake her hand and at the end of the speech the speaker Pelosi as on camera you'll see this everywhere literally ripped the speech in half wow she ripped it in half and and here's what she had to say when asked why she did that madam it was the thing to do it was the courteous thing to do to rip the speech in half that's the that's pretty amazing now I I I guess point counterpoint yeah that S. the speaker pulls you what she thought of the president's third state of the union we were just able to catch up with the speaker and she with why she ripped up the president's speech and she said because it was quote the courteous thing to do considering the alternative she said it was such a dirty speech dirty speech called it the boy not that not coming out of this with any any new love between the speaker of the house in the president of the United States well it's not there but you know I would have expected boast of both of them to hide it better than that a little bit better I think it makes we talked about earlier I I think the president's not being the speaker during the handshake is looks bad and it set the tone perhaps it does but it's it looks bad for him and I think I there's just no reason for that why why rip up the transcript the speech itself why do that afterwards why say it's a dirty speech I get you don't like it I get a sales pitch he's making it let's at least go through these sorts of things these these national procedural things that we do together and let's let's let's maintain our dignity for the office and for the institutions regardless of who's in at least on the level of formality where it's easy you know disagree on the substance but they handshake and all that you make great your teeth but you can do that with your mouth closed yeah that's the that's exactly right and also we we did talk and we touched on just this earlier but one of what kind of an interesting part of this I think you know half the audience is gonna love it half is it Rush Limbaugh was in the audience and we just learned over the last several days that rush has stage for lung cancer which is which is not a good thing I I just had a friend of mine passed away about six or seven months ago not a smoker I never smoked in his life incredible health and and had stayed for lung cancer when it was discovered and he died six months later at night whatever you think of Rush Limbaugh I don't wish that on anybody course of course that there's two levels one is sympathy for the match real human being but interestingly enough of the president obviously a fan of Rush Limbaugh spoke of him during the speech but did did a little bit more than that which I think although we knew about it before the speech it surprised many people here tonight is a special man he loved by millions of Americans who just received a stage for advanced cancer diagnosis this is not good news but what is good news is that he is the greatest fighter in winter thank you will ever meet Rush Limbaugh thank you you are for our nation the millions of people a day did you speak to in that you inspire announced tonight that you'll be receiving our country's highest civilian honor the presidential medal of freedom you heard a lot of the Democrats you heard one person in particular yacht no and and they already knew that Russell of surprise which I don't understand because it was it was an actual ready but not only did they did the president now sit there the First Lady with him that Russian the stands next to her put that around his neck right there yeah that that was odd and I think you can question the the choice to begin with this was a divisive figure and this was not I mean that that you look at the kind of people who've gotten the presidential medal of freedom they have been people who both sides couldn't feel anything other than warmth about right it has been a kind of a national unifying thing is a very very partisan and often very nasty figure yeah and and the Midwest isn't to say you know you you you wish the guy lock on a generational level that's a whole other matter to even to introduce him there you know for for sympathy that's one thing but the presidential medal of freedom that that seemed a little out of character and that a war and seem like such a last minute decision wasn't something that was thought out they heard about the diagnosis the sense the the is coming up here's a little show we can put on I I'm I'm questioning that as well our doctor Michael dealers here he's Katie Artes political analyst I'm very March and we're bringing it to you live and local Katie our coverage of the state of the union coming up we're gonna touch base in Iowa as more results are coming from at the Iowa caucus we didn't get him yesterday for hours on the air Dr Mike we get it now I'm gonna give you the latest update of what's coming out from Iowa and kind of what that tells us tells us a lot it does we're gonna have that for you a right after this short break stay with us it's Katie our live coverage of the state of the union and the Iowa caucus is live in local.

arm movements it's it's really not fair you you think you haven't stopped any destructive he almost threw one under hand it to go pleaded and what you gonna do strange mantle lamp he was one story line yesterday the quarterback on the other side was obviously a storyline Ryan Finley makes is NFL debut is is the starter yesterday had some flashes IT he had some negative place there's no question that really negative place but I I saw flashes that you thought you know there's something to work on something to build off of yeah I think I think I am number one the running game help them I think they did get the running game going they really changed the blocking patters Iran gap stuff where they were blah asking down and pulling linemen and are doing a lot of those sort of sort of thing so they picked up where they left off by giving the running game on track a little bit against the rams in London out rushing up and then to a rush ravens to rush the ball for over a hundred fifty yards against ravens they're giving up eighty two yards game coming in so that's that's a significant thank and the they're gonna have to do more that for him because that's going to be a rookie quarterbacks best friend any quarterbacks best friend really looking Green Bay now they've got a running game in Aaron Rodgers is going to be tough to handle but you look at Ryan family I like how he changed plays change protections in in talk no guys like Trey Hopkins and others after the game they they were duly impressed filling Hawkins were trading praise back and forth about you know recognizing the fronts in the configurations that that doubt we're so multiple that don Martin deal utilizes and he had to change for Texas a lot sometimes very late and he was doing it and get them out of plays into a better place his pick six on fortune they they ran you know eleven after lunch rooms a rinse your coverage just like they did against Tom Brady and the patriots when they went eleven at the line of scrimmage and played pressed against Tom Brady in that in that doesn't have a football game I thought man right feel is going to see it and he saw it multiple times any audible as to what they want to applies to but he just left a little bit inside left on the field instead of if if that's if that's not caught it's supposed to be an incompletion not a bounced and he kept on the field of play and you know very very sharp defensive player who's who's done that to you know to more than one person a broken that football Marcus Peters may apply did the same thing two weeks ago to Russell Wilson to to pick sixes in three games for the ravens I mean what a what a trade that is but you know that that was a mistake then obviously the ball security you know you get smoked and spent the ball up and down they they get a fumble recovery touch so see you give up two scores you know turning it over to different ways of tomorrow's batters get a couple of throws it it jumped out to be the the touchdown pass diapered in the end zone yeah Tyler used his body and he put it in a good spot in the the play that really to me stood out was he got pressure on his face he spun away from S. then scrambled then stop reset his feet and threw across the mix it for the twenty three RD I don't know that may have been was at least one of his finest plays of the day it was I thought it good try to Tyler Boyd yes the middle feel like twenty three twenty four yards I think I think what he showed was what the coaches were hoping to want any strength is geared up get the ball out his weaknesses you know that that's about you know yet what if it's not really what you central yeah in any he's not real depth that's instinct is the extension and creation part of it is an interesting kind of thing in Tom Brady doesn't have it he's the greatest of all time you know put some players haven't some players don't run family has a lot of that in in in he showed you know some of that against the defense is very very difficult to to decipher so I think it you know if if the if the defense can line up and play a little bit better now than they did on a step by step basis against an opponent in the running game continues to advance or at least be as good as it was yesterday right the only has a chance to win some games I think he showed that he can get that done I'm not saying he played great by any stretch but I I think he showed some things that were reasons that the coaches made the decision to make the move they made when they made still ahead we've got a lot to us sort Judge bars citizenship question from 2020 census

"This is NPR. And you're listening to WNYC in New York at five oh four. I'm Jamie Floyd legalizing, recreational marijuana, passing congestion pricing and rapidly increasing renewable energy usage. These are just some of the items on New York governor Andrew Cuomo to do list for this legislative session at the state of the union address this afternoon governor Cuomo conceded, the laundry list may seem ambitious. It's a lot no doubt about it. But there's been a lot that has been bottled up for many many years that we couldn't get done. And in many ways, I feel the state is now liberated with the Senate Democratic caucus. And of course, it's the state of the state the governor called on lawmakers to continue passing progressive legislation in the coming weeks among his top budget priorities. Cuomo said our public transportation and infrastructure, healthcare and cutting taxes for the middle class. For years, the NYPD's response to questions about its use of surveillance technology has been to neither confirm nor deny whether records bowed. It exists. It's called the glow more response. But now in New York state court judge has ruled in a case over whether NYPD spied on the cell phones of people attending black lives matter protests that the police can no longer keep that claim of confidentiality. It's a win for civil libertarians. And state supreme court Justice, Arlene, blue shot down, the NYPD argument that responding to complaints would compromise counterterrorism or criminal efforts because the police in question, we're not the people in question rather were not breaking the law at the time New York Times reporter, Ali Watson covered the case. Judge's ruling right now, depending on whether or not the NYPD appeals actually puts a very firm boot the neck of his response. They can't really use it in the future. The NYPD does have thirty days to appeal. The ruling. A statement a spokeswoman said that it uses the global response exceedingly sparingly and only after careful consideration of the interests involved tonight, mostly clear, a low around twenty seven degrees. Currently, it's thirty four degrees. I'm Mary Louise Kelley, and I'm Ari Shapiro in a Senate hearing room today attorney general nominee William bar has been walking a fine line bar is pledging to protect the Justice department. But he also says the president has sweeping constitutional authority NPR national Justice correspondent Carrie Johnson has been following these confirmation hearings and joins us now to talk about them. Hi, hey, okay. He has been nominated to lead the Justice department at a time when the president is attacking it. So how did bar address that tension today? Well, Bill Maher said he has a very high opinion of deputy attorney general rod Rosenstein, he says he has no reason to doubt that the Russians attempted to interfere in our elections. And he says he doesn't believe that special counsel. Robert Muller would be conducting a witch hunt in fact, Barr says he would quit rather than fire Muller. If there were no good cause to get rid of him. And as one of Muller's friends for thirty years Barr says it's unimaginable that. Muller would do anything to prompt? A firing Senate Democrats went into this hearing wanting bar firmly committed to protecting the Russia investigation. Did they get that commitment? Not affirm one Ari Dianne Feinstein, the top democrat on the committee was pressing Bill bar a lot about what people will learn in the end about the Russia probe. Will you commit to making any report Muller produces at the conclusion of his investigation available to congress and to the public as as I said, my statement, I am going to make as much information available as I can consistent with the rules and regulations now Bill bar talked about wanting transparency, but he also said that he s the attorney general make the ultimate call about what becomes public and later on Senator amazing. Geraldo, Hawaii said just asking us to trust. You is not enough. She said this president will do anything to protect himself, and Mr. bar was kind of tough in his response. He said, I'm not going to surrender the responsibility of the attorney general. To get this title. We know that bar has had some contact with lawyers involved in the investigation. Did we learn anything new today about his interactions with the White House? We did bar told lawmakers he actually met with President Trump awhile ago, and the president seemed to want bar to join his legal defence team bar politely declined. He said he didn't want to stick his head in a meat grinder bar. Also said he discussed some legal theories with attorneys for the president the vice president and with Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, but bar said he didn't recall learning anything of substance. Anything confidential about the pro from the beginning of this investigation. The issue of recusals has been a very big deal. What had bar say about recusals today? He said he thinks Jeff Sessions. The former attorney general probably did the right thing to recuse himself in Democrats pressed bar to step aside to given this context with lawyers involved in this investigation and a memo he wrote criticizing the investigation, but here again, far would not commit. He says he will ask career. Ethics officials at Justice to evaluate the question, but he won't necessarily do what they advise. He also said the president is not above the law. The president can't for example, offer pardons to people who promise now to incriminate him taking a step back. There is one question about Bill bar that people on both sides of the aisle have which is why would he come back to lead the Justice department after twenty seven years to be attorney general again in excellent question bar, basically says because he loves the Justice department as an institution he says, he's sixty eight years old, and he has nothing to lose. If you take this job, you have to be ready to make decisions and spend all your political capital and have no future because you have to have that freedom of action, and I feel I'm gonna position in life where I can do the right thing and not really care about the consequences and Ari so far nothing has emerged to block Boris path confirmation. NPR national. Justice. Correspondent Carrie Johnson. Thank you. My pleasure for analysis of the hearing and of what Bill bar may do if he's confirmed. Let's bring in Jennifer dascomb. She's an associate professor of law at American University. She used to work at the Justice department. Professor Daska welcome. Thank you. So to the central question today, which is whether bar will protect the Muller investigation based on what you heard from his testimony. Are you persuaded that he will? So he he answered that pretty clearly he said that he he likely I mean, he had he would protect mother and the absence. Something extraordinary that mother would be allowed to continue. I think the key question and the one that several senators pushed on the a question of what is going to be made public, and what's going to be made available congress. We heard Bill bars say repeatedly that he was committed to transparency, but transparency considered students consistent with the law transparency consistent with rules and regulations and bar. Has a very broad view of executive privilege and a very broad view of executive power including power over criminal investigation. So when he says he needs to be consistent with rules and regulations on the question of whether whatever final report Muller producers should be made public. That's what he would be referring to executive privilege that the president might say, no, exactly executive privilege abroad claims our national security, our range of different reasons. Why transparency would be limited according to his his views and the president's articulation of of what's necessary to keep private secret. He also as we just heard there from Carrie Johnson did not seem to suggest that he's likely to recuse himself from overseeing the Mueller investigation. Did that surprise you in any way? It comprises me only because it seems like a clear case where recusals would be appropriate, but he has been consistent on along in suggesting that he would not recuse himself. And I wasn't surprised that he didn't change his mind today. But giving his engagement given the nemo that was that he chose to write and to send to the president about concerned about obstruction of Justice charges targeting the president and given what he acknowledged today about conversations, it seems like this would be a clear case for recusal has been consistent about that. Well, that prompts my next question, and it's one that he was asked today by senators in in one way or the other a number of times, which is would he protect the independence of the Justice department against executive overreach. Do you think when push comes to shove Bill would tell the president? No, no, sir. You can't do that. So again, I think it depends on what's being asked. And he did get today that there were certain red lines that he went cross, but that being said he has an expressed repeatedly previously very broad views of executive power and executive privilege, and there are certainly in a whole range of areas in which the president could assert executive privilege in my assumption is and based on bars previous, writings and statements. That bar would agree. Did you learn anything about Bill today that you didn't already know? Some of the contacts that he's had were interesting to hear about you know, he is as as expected he was incredibly articulate and and respectful. I think that the key is is reading the testimony in light of what he started written in the past. Did you hear anything today that might derail this confirmation that poses a serious threat to his chances of being confirmed? I'm just given given the politics and given the makeup of the Senate unlikely at this point is there a question to you to you would have asked him that the senators did not. Again, I think that really pushing him on this question of transparency what happens when the president asserts a claim of national security what happens when the president says, you know, we just want a very brief cursory summary of this report sent up to congress. What do you do? Then you would have liked to have heard an iron clad, whatever Muller wants to be made public. I'll back. Exactly, that's Jennifer Gasco. She she choose constitutional and national security law at American University Jennifer desk, thanks so much for taking the time. Thank you.

"With the president of China this weekend. Both are locked in a multi-billion dollar trade war. Civil rights leaders say the indictment of four Saint Louis metropolitan police officers reveals a troubling mindset. Inside the department Saint Louis public radio's Rachel Lipman reports. The officers are facing federal charges for their roles in the assault of an undercover officer during a two thousand seventeen protests. The charges include excessive force obstruction of Justice and lying to a grand jury four officers have been suspended without pay the undercover detective was among hundreds of people arrested at downtown Saint Louis in September of last year. We can make a bid, but it has to be public and people would be able to see it. There Trump's visit comes on the heels of a big development and special counsel Robert Mueller's investigation a guilty plea by his former attorney Michael Cohen, and what it revealed about Trump's efforts to land a business deal with Russia during the two thousand sixteen campaign NPR White House correspondent tamra Keith is traveling with the president and joins us now from when his IRAs their town. Hey, ATI sometimes when a president goes overseas. The White House is trying to leave all the domestic troubles behind is that the case this time, the answer would seem to be no. And and the reason I say that is that President Trump was supposed to have a meeting here with Russian President Vladimir Putin, he abruptly cancelled that on the way to Argentina via tweet saying it was because of Russian aggression against Ukraine, but then this afternoon there were. Reports of a possibly an informal meeting happening between Trump and Putin. Those reports were being pushed from Russia and the White House put out a sort of an odd statement referring to the Mueller investigation. Sarah Sanders sent this along she said the Russian witch-hunt hoax, which is hopefully now nearing an end is doing very well. Unfortunately, it probably does undermine our relationship with Russia, which was not entirely the answer to the question that we were asking another way that we know that the president's thinking about it is that he's been tweeting about it from here in Argentina a little while ago. Reporter's got to ask the president questions, and and one of the questions was about why he cancelled his meeting with Putin. He insisted it was because of Ukraine, hopefully, they'll be able to settle it out. Flowers amazing with president. The basis of what took place. With respect to the ships, sailors that was the. In the meantime, what else has been going on at the g twenty one big thing that happened today was before the g twenty started a signing ceremony at the president's hotel with the leaders of Canada and Mexico signing the US MCA that is the trade deal that will replace NAFTA. One interesting note is that during remarks, President Trump and president Pineyro of Mexico. It was his last day on the job both referred to it as the US MCA, which is the preferred title that President Trump likes, but prime minister Trudeau kept calling it new NAFTA, even though President Trump does not like the term NAFTA at all. But you know, this is a notable moment because this is a step in the process of President Trump, keeping a campaign promise that said congress and legislatures in Mexico and Canada still need to sign off on this on another subject. The Saudi Crown prince Mohammad bin Salman is there. He's of course, been under scrutiny since the killing of journalist Jamal kashogi has he actually interacted with President Trump yet. So a White House official says that they just exchanged pleasantries that there was no discussion. This comes in pretty big contrast with a video that's been circulating of Russian President Putin, and m Bs exchanging sort of an intricate high five that looked very celebratory the president is under some scrutiny about this because he has questioned the CIA assessment that NBS ordered the killing of Jamal kashogi. That's NPR's tamra Keith tamra. Thank you. You're welcome. And we're going to start right there with the g twenty talks in Argentina for our regular week in politics chat. We also need to take stock of another wild week in the Russia investigation. David Brooks of the New York Times is here in the studio as he often has on Friday, David with you and Susan Glasser. The New Yorker, welcome to you. Thanks so much. So President Trump signed this new NAFTA deal today, except as we just heard we're not supposed to call it NAFTA anymore. That's controversial. We are referring to the United States Mexico Canada agreement the US MCA, Scott, I'm tempted to call it also maybe prospects for a trade deal or some sort of agreement with China that may be coming together down at the g twenty Susan. Let me start with you does this count as progress in a year where we have spent a lot more time talking about trade wars than trade deals. Well, look, I think President Trump made a decision to sort of pull back from the brink and to declare victory with the reincarnated NAFTA. Whatever you wanna call it, most experts, and I'm not one on this subject. Do believe that it essentially is a reincarnated NAFTA that it builds on the foundation substantially of the original went and by the way, it's not attend deal. I should point out that there's going to be a real political fight. I think. Up here in Washington on Capitol Hill over approving this. So it's not over. Although President Trump was was taking it as a victory lap. Today was also strengthened by government coming in Mexico, which will inherit the steel by a president on his last day there. That's right. And and I thought you saw the lasting hard feelings as a result of these very tough negotiations with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau who did appear at the last minute was uncertain at the signing ceremony today in Buenos Aires. But had some strong words for President Trump, and you've had this amazing spectacle. What have we taken to get here of the United States going after candidate one of its closest allies, David your takeaway, so far from the g twenty well, so far the image of Muhammad bin Salman and Putin doing an end zone dance together is the big takeaway video circulating of them doing a hi fi. Looking very cheer an image. It's a symbol. It's a symbol of an era in which the wolves of the global international order are on the March and undeterred because there's no one. Deter them. And so that's one thing. The second thing I think is the China US relationship and this thank heaven is not a Trump related story to me the big change in US China relations is that we used to have people who were friends of China somewhere, foes of China and the foreign policy establishment sort of split. That's no longer the case. Now, everyone sees China as a challenge, but as a foe Hank pulse in the former treasury fare gave a speech in Singapore recently in which he laid that very clearly and he was very much in the camp. So when Trump talks tough on China trade, he now has a lot of people who are not normally his friends actually thinking he's doing the right thing me loop.
