The M1 Honeymoon Continues

"We should start by. Just maybe doing a check in now that we've been using these m. one max for a while. Yeah so Like i shared. I bought my wife a macbook air. She is absolutely loving it. Silent battery ruins all day cheeses using microsoft teams video conferencing all day. She teaches in the public schools but teaches from home. And that's been that's been really going. Well and i was so impressed with it ended up with the thirteen inch macbook pro and selling my sixteen inch and the smaller screen size has taken some getting used to but if you're on the fence about the macbook pro versus the air. I'll say a couple of things one like the only time i've heard the fan is when i was trans. Coding to streams of four k video and each stream was about twenty minutes long and after a few minutes. I heard it but thou his debbie expected and the battery. Life's really good I think it's a little bit better than the air apple. Says it is and sort of like anecdotally around my house. It seems like the pros and be a little bit better than the air. But i think performance wise. Unless you're doing this big long sustained things like we said the map areas so so good. I don't think there's a really compelling reason to move up to the mac pro unless you just want the touch bar which a lot of people do or you want Kind of a better sense of longer sustained operations without being a slow down. But i think hands down the best mac to buy right now. Is that in one medicare.

MacBook Air with Apple's own M1 chip is faster and has better battery life than Intel-based predecessors

"And speaking of that our final blizzard of reviews for probably this year blue in this morning the embargoes for reviews of macs using the new emlyn ships broke this morning. Let me get two of the devices out of the way before we focus more on the meat of the interesting stuff. Which in my opinion is the mac. Air all include links to these reviews in the show notes even if we don't delve into all of them deeply at the verge chris. Welsh says the mac mini with the new ship is a mixed bag. Existing apps run well and the price is certainly appealing but with ram limited bizarrely to sixteen gigabytes and the inability to upgrade that ram and since it doesn't support external. Gpa's could you really run this as your main machine. His conclusion though was mostly positive. Quote spending a few days with the twenty twenty. Mac mini has shown me that it's a barn burner of a miniature desktop. It outperforms most intel macs in several benchmarks runs apps reliably and offers a fantastic day to day experience whether you're using it for web browsing and email or for creative editing and professional work that potential will only grow an apple inevitably raises the rams ceiling and hopefully bring back those missing usb ports. These six hundred and ninety nine dollars. Starting price is tempting but most people will be better off upgrading to sixteen gigabytes of unified memory. Which puts you at eight hundred and ninety nine dollars. Doubling the default six hundred and fifty six gigabytes storage makes that cost climb higher to one thousand ninety nine dollars but even then the price to performance ratio for the mac mini has never been better than with this. Change over to apple silicon. Even if you ignore iphone apps completely transition is off to an impressive start considering just how smoothly everything comes together. And just as ever the mac. Minis flexibility is what makes it special and quote. Also at the verge. Neil patel tackled the macbook pro with the chip and he concurred great performance. Great display great battery life but again why ram limited to sixteen gigabytes and also this kind of got lost in the shuffle of the original announcement but only two usb ports only two period only to on a pro machine guests. I'm gonna be holding onto this last macbook pro with actual ports and sd card reader and hdmi etc until it literally is on its last legs. Anyway knee lies conclusion quote. There are two things to say about the thirteen inch. Macbook pro with 'em one chip one. The m one and the work apple has done to make a difficult processor. Transition seamless remarkable success and to this particular mac book. Pro doesn't necessarily seem like a worthwhile upgrade over the macbook. Air with an m one chip. Yes it offers slightly better sustained performance and a little more battery life than the air. But i would happily trade back. Those seconds of faster rendering time on the pro for the hours of frustration caused by the touch bar. And if you have much more serious performance needs it seems likely that you might want more than two ports sixteen gigabytes of ram and only one external display so. This machine is a twitter. An excellent fascinating twitter buddy between her nonetheless and quote

Apple Releases macOS Mojave 10.14.5 Boot Camp Update

"Macrumors says Apple's most recent update for boot camp has let the beans out of the bag. Last week says the piece apple releasing update for boot camp its utility for running windows on a Mac. While this update would typically be unremarkable several macrumors. Readers noted that the release notes reference an unreleased twenty twenty model of the sixteen inch macbook pro. macrumors points out that. This could be a mistake applegate the sixteen inch, macbook pro, a high end graphics option earlier this year. But it's still calls that machine macbook Pro Twenty nineteen. So maybe apple accidentally calling that machine macbook pro twenty twenty or maybe. Apple has accidentally signaled a sixteen inch macbook pro on the way. The next obvious question. Will that machine be among the first powered by apple? Silicon. macrumors seems to think not. While, it does point to growing rumors of an apple silicon event in mid November. The peace has that transition is expected to start at the lower end for notebooks such as the macbook air thirteen, inch macbook pro, or possibly even the return of an ultra portable twelve inch macbook. If the rumors are true. We don't have long to wait the off groomer date the seventeenth of November. Is Three weeks from today?

Review of iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro

"What do you think of the iphone Twelve and twelve pro? They're pretty fantastic. They're amazing. The cliche is always to say it's the best iphone ever in these. Truly are I. Think there are some significant upgrades from the eleven and I think both twelve twelve pro show that I think for me the the. Weirdness but the hard thing to get your head around is house similar. The twelve twelve pro is and is at a bad thing and that's what I've been wrestling a lot with my review. I think the quick way I like to think about it is forget last year, forget the eleven and eleven pro and the three hundred dollar difference and the features, and if you think of the new lineup a little bit like the Mac lineup, the apple has whereas the twelve mini would be something like the macbook air and the twelfth pro would be like the macbook pro like the thirteen inch in twelve Max fifteen and I think the twelve is the macbook which has always been kind of a weird product for Apple. In the last like five or six years isn't it isn't the air a consumer thing I think that's where the twelfth false. That's an interesting comparison because a Mac Book I. Mean is basically been discontinued has always been kind of the you know the the lesser like it's the one that always gets the least attention right? Because if it was a product and it, it didn't it wasn't as cheap as macbook air and it wasn't as powerful as a pro do you source that as the issue with the twelve this year? I think the analogy holds up in a couple of those instances. I think it's it's definitely not as cheap as obviously the iphone mini and we can talk about prices second but also think as far as power Scott the fourteen as it's the same size, it's the same build. Aside from the stainless steel it is remarkably the same phone and etiquette people had them both in their hands I I mean I gravitate more towards the pro It's a little heavier. It feels more solid and at compare that more like I'm a camera person. So there's like these awesome cameras from Sunday called the as seven s three which are thousands of dollars. They're they're well-made they're solid cameras but then you hold something like Leica m the costs here nine thousand end the build is just another level I think the finish on the twelfth pro. You see earn it's thousand dollar price tag that makes sense to me. If, you think of the iphone twelve is conde affordable version of that foam. That makes sense. But this is not an iphone eleven replacement found I. think that's GonNa be the twelve mini

Looking for a MacBook Air alternative? Here are your best options

"With kids about to head back to school either in person or Colle- laptops. Are. Front. And Center. Now Michalak. Air is a popular option. There's actually a pretty wide world outside of Mackerel S I'm Roger Chang and this is your charge. With me laptop expert and senior reviewer Josh Goldman. Thanks for joining me. Josh. Thanks for having me, Roger. So we're getting close to back to school season and who knows what? That's really gonNA look like you know we've got folks potentially going my kid's GonNa. Go to school with a bunch of people doing remote learning But with that said, parents will generally WANNA decent laptop for their kids no matter what their ages at this point Just start things off do you have a general tips for people on the hunt for Nick Peter? The, the one thing having you know, ended the the last school. In Quarantine the one thing I did learn from that was if you can afford to get it laptop with a larger screen than the eleven point six inch screen that most of the kids have on their chromebooks. chromebook obviously, he became really popular with schools. Except they went with models that have eleven point six inch screens which are very difficult for navigating the world of online learning. A lot of the online learning tools require more screen space so that the kids can actually see what they're doing and I think if you're going to invest in a laptop for your kid this season, get them something with at least a thirteen inch display fourteen if possible or even larger if he can. So what about touchscreen is that something that's necessary or is that more of a luxury I don't know that it's a luxury some or necessary I think it's just something that you can get these days as far as I'm concerned. touchscreens of the future everybody uses their phone all day long that's a touch screen tablets touchscreens. It makes sense for kids to have a touchscreen because that's how they're used to communicating with computers these days so. If you can get one with a touchscreen. Great. I don't think it's going to be a detriment though if you don't get one with a touchscreen and since we're talking about MAC books anyway or air replacement. macbook airs don't have touchscreens anyway. So if you're GONNA go macbook air, then you're not getting a touchscreen anyway. But one of the luxuries of gone with windows is you can get them with touchscreen. So catching and the MAC book air has been a popular option for a long time for students particularly college students But generally, what are some of the big reasons why you'd want to consider alternative is far as an alternative? if want to go with the chromebook, it's because that's what your school district is on. That has that makes things a lot easier than. Going with a separate operating system like windows or Mac os but the bigger thing for a lot of people going back to school is whether or not there their software that they need to get through school is going to work with the operating system that they have other than that it's more or less just learning to deal with the different features in the different houses. So it's not. I wouldn't say that like the OS is a big issue, but it's certainly an issue and you WanNa, just make sure what you're using his compatible with the operating system that you're going. Guys let's start with windows the the most popular operating system out there. What are some of the best options for a windows laptop. So if we're going to stick with the like as a macbook air replacement the macbook air has over the years been the most popular option for kids in school and or in college in high school students but they're. Obviously the the windows PC makers figure that out pretty quick and made a lot of laptops that look and behave in everything that MAC book air. So you've got things like. If you WANNA go really premium. Got Things like the daleks ps thirteen or the HP Specter which have a lot of the same design touches and it's just a super premium long battery life good performance and around thousand dollars. which is what you're dealing with with the macbook air. You're still at around that thousand dollar price point for their starting configuration. You can as usual get a better deal with with windows than you can with Mac. He'll usually get more features better processor, those kind of things with you go with windows. If you want to go. So those two that I mentioned her thirteen inch. If you want to go a little bit larger, my personal recommendation for most people is the Lenovo. Yoga. See Seven, forty, it's a two and one. So it's a little bit more flexible. It's a fourteen inch little bit larger screen, but still a nice compact package really good battery life really good performance and you can get it for less than a thousand dollars yen full disclosure I took joshes advice in actually purchased one. My wife and I are very happy with it so. On Josh thank you, it is it. It's one of those laptops that looks and feels like a Mac Book Air Bit and a you just getting you're getting more for your money with it. If, you want to go even less expensive on windows I like the acer swift three, which is running amd's latest rising processors and those the the processing performance you're getting out of that is like twice that of more more expensive laptop. So it's it's or should I say the processing performance is that of a laptop that's twice as expensive. Because as the swift three starts at around six hundred dollars and it's a three pound laptop fourteen inch display really really nice. Good. Battery Life But yeah, it's it's really cheap with good performance.

Apple might release two ARM-based MacBooks this year

"There are new Intel macintoshes in the pipeline that means they've designed them. They're ready to. They're going to still offer them new designs, probably a new I. Mac would be my guess, but we don't know but. They've said that they've also said. Our existing Intel computers and the ones we sell will be supported for years to come. I believe them on that, too. That's all we know, so everything else is speculation is my speculation. There will be a thirteen inch laptop and macbook pro this year. running on apple silicon. There will also be an Intel based I'm Mac this year next year. I would guess everything apple releases. Will be on the new apple chips and the apple chips. Here's the real the benefits. We pretty much can expect from the new apple chips. They'll use less power so if you have a laptop. You have an I mac, you said. No you have a laptop. The PRO macbook, pro. LAPTOPS, Yeah Yeah. I'm sorry I thought you, said I mak so the. Biggest benefit will be for laptops. You should get a much better battery life, maybe a day or two.

Cutting your finger off (almost)

"Jimmy Yomas. Cut Your finger off again. Tell us that story. I I believe if you Mike was Right. There Mike my check, my buddy, who's been helping me out? He lives in the neighborhood, and we became fast friends last year, and he's been around and he's incredible so mike and Erin were right there in errands like Johnny on the spot with first aid because he was in the military, so he was trained in all these various. Disciplines of I stayed in organization and stuff, and he's amazing and. They were both standing in be talking to each other. When they heard the saw, go off and they might just goes. Oh, boy was at bypass. was that not bypassed because he saw me like my hand this. And I go. We've been cutting this particular would a local friend of mine has been giving me hundreds of board feet. This would it's all pine, but it's all painted and Scott screws and nails in it so whenever we cut it. I usually bypass, but and I was in. It's all painted black. And you had to explain somebody who doesn't know. Yeah, yeah, as you could turn the break off, so the machine acts like a typical table so with no ability to stop if it sense skin so a and the reason we bypass, because does nails and screws and staples, and all would and I was cutting a piece that would, but I was a piece I picked up a inspected quickly and I noticed there were no nails or staples in it, so I didn't bypass, and I just want right, but Mike has been using the Sawtooth and every time. I say used the blacks up bypass because we don't have an extra break, we do now, but we did and anyway. The I was cutting in. It's funny. Andrew Kline Span. He's very very intuitive very sport of course. Said, how did it happen? They just a real simple question, which is really so stupid. It's like had it happen, and I know an Andrew would be like he could. I said I was cutting short piece of wood, and the blade was really high, so the kickback was really powerful. What really happened was the blade the salt? The piece of wood went through the blade. It was only like thirteen inch piece of wood, as it went through the blade, it hit the back of the blade in rose up because the would kind of pinch the back of the blades rose up because I had the blade at three inches, because I had just cut something really big, and I was only cutting something three quarters of so hit the back of the blade in rose up and snaps back down. And when it snapped back down, and the kickback at it pushed, the of would back out the front of the saw. And it, the piece of wood on the left side of the blade was only about an inch wide, and it ran across my fingernail, so I'm pretty convinced what happened was the would kicking back ripped my fingernail open. Now, but because of this I mean I didn't feel it. Now, but because of the trauma I don't know if it's happening. You guys now. This is the second time the me I believe. Because of the trauma of the the would getting old like you know rankling. whacking the vibrating the blade, the thing went off. There was one other time I call on video where I was cutting something in kickback I was nowhere near the played with any skin hands, and the blade kicked it break went off. So I believe it was the trauma of the Blade vibrating that caused the break to go off and not necessarily sensing skin. That's one theory. Mike and Aaron kind of. Believe that my hand was pushed into the blade. I hit. It happened so quick. I can't honestly say exactly what did happen. The Guard was down so you guys will be happy to have the guard all the way down, so my hand hit the blade like under the edge of the guard. If it did hit the blade, my other theory is my thing. L. Hit the blade, I and the technology didn't work until the cut went through my fingernail if that makes sense. So because the I, believe the pieces all there I believe it was just ripped from the the piece of wood, pushing through I don't think i. hit the blade late. That's just my gut feeling. So. They just don't little tiny pieces of wood without push sticks if I was using push. Dick's like on the outside. Usually use a push. On between the fence and the blade. And not always on the other side like Matisse's is. Consistent he talks uses those crab claw. Push sticks on both sides of the piece of wood, and that's what I often do, but I was just was a stupid momentary like cut this quick. And, that's what happened. So. You, know I I constantly. It's been ten years that I'm always very aware of stable saw safety since I got injured the first bedtime and This time it just was just one of those of this will take one second, and then Kabui, and I'm okay I. mean all I just I just have like a going to screw fingernail. Probably it'll grow out and be fine. The funny thing was is when you get injured on the table. So you know you get you get like fifteen pictures of all the friends that folly. It also cut themselves on the tables though. Check this out. So I got I got about five or six emails or pictures on Instagram. A very similar injuries through the fingernail and. And everybody said most of the people like I'm fine now grew out. You can't even tell. So. That's what I suspect will happen. So No Hospital Mike was there Mike see to train so as errands so the to discuss? I didn't even look just stuck my finger between them like fix that I. Know they were both great now. I was more. Apple Doubles Price Of MacBook Pro Memory Upgrades

"News of a costly mistake for Apple. Well I mean it's apple costly as a relative term. There was the story over the weekend that Apple had doubled the cost of upgrading the memory and the entry level thirteen inch macbook pro. Apple insider ran a p saying on Friday buyers of the entry level model of the refreshed thirteen inch macbook pro were able to upgrade the memory on the device from eight gigabytes to sixteen gigabytes for one hundred bucks. Update first spotted by Reddit users on Saturday. The cost of the upgrade has gone up to two hundred bucks. The mistake was the one hundred dollar option. On Monday mocked daily. News ran reports saying that the upgrade price was supposed to be two hundred dollars all along same as a lot of other Max. Citing post from the verge, the peace says the price increase is actually a price correction. The price to upgrade ramp from eight to sixteen gigabytes as two hundred dollars on other Max, including the I MAC and macbook air, and this changes meant to keep the fee consistent apple says it will honor the earlier pricing for those who purchased the cheaper, Ram, upgrade. Before the price change went into effect.

5 Ways to Improve Your Videoconference Presence

"Needless to say I've had some interesting online conversations over the last couple of months. I have seen parts of people's houses that I really wasn't prepared for and then there has been a mix of interesting lighting in tin can audio. Yes it has been the wild wild west. So what I've decided to do is take the microphone by the horns and do two things for my contribution to the greater video conferencing world. I I have some tips today. That are easy to enable and that with a little adjustment here or there you should be able to enable. You should be able to use these pretty quickly second later this week. I'm releasing a new online workshop. Called the essential steps to impressive video conferencing. It's a one hour movie that covers audio video and environment and I really get into some cool tips now. I'll talk more about this later in the show. But I'm GonNa tell you right now. That is free to our inner circle members who support this podcast on patron for right now. Let's get to those five tips already tip number one get the to Kia. Yes and you probably want wine. Do you want me to and I'm thinking more like Ikea. Dot Com right because shopping inside care right. A lot of places probably just isn't going to happen but I can't dot com is doing well and if you go to the search box on in enter diffused lighting. You'll get a variety of lamps and lampshades. That are exactly what you need one way or another one of. Them's going to be something that you need now. What is the deal with this Derek? Well here's the deal that the lighting on so many of these calls that I'm watching is terrible. The light tends to be too harsh the wrong color. You all sorts of things and really. What I'm seeing is that people really aren't thinking about. How do I get a flattering light on my face? Which should be really kind of at the top of the list like this. I don't WanNa look terrible. When on these webcams alrighty so how do I look better well? The rule for portrait photography applies to video conferencing as well which is the larger the light source right in the closer to your face the softer the light. And then if you position that light so this more or less you know coming straight on to your face you know. That's what we call fashion lighting and it is very flattering. There's a reason why fashion photographers use it. It makes people look pretty so going back to Ikea if you shop on Kia and you shop. Four diffused lighting. You'll see these lamps and all sorts of goodies that you can accessorize your desk with in suddenly. Look a ton better and the reason why I pick you could get these all sorts of places. But they're actually quite affordable so you get a very attractive desk accessory now and you will look much more attractive on camera if you follow this tip. Now here's the other part of that tip which is get something that's daylight balanced or s close to daylight balanced as possible and again. This is another mistake that I see so often. Which is if you have a tungsten lightbulb shining on you. You're going to be orange. And if you have fluorescent tubes eliminating your mug you're GonNa be Green and neither of those really make great colors for face right so you want a daylight balance tube or as close to daylight as you can get so two parter. One diffused lighting coming straight on and be second part of one. Get as close to daylight balance as you can already. That's tip number one. Here's tip number two. It's called Darling. You Look Marvelous now. Unfortunately those built in seven twenty p Webcams for many laptops and desktops. Just aren't very flattery. And I would go so far as to say that. They are often terrible cracks me up. I have a a state of the art macbook pro thirteen inch. This is a gorgeous machine. It does everything a beautifully except for one thing except for one thing it has that lousy seven twenty p facetime camera that when I turn it on and I look at me I do not feel good. Do not feel plus. They can't control it It has way too much depth of field. I can't control exposure. I mean just goes on and on these things are agonizing and especially for those of us who like photography their double agonizing. So we've got to get away from those now. There are a couple of things you can do. If you have a cam link already which is a digital interface that allows you to connect your digital camera to your computer. You have a lump of gold right now because they are hard to find the ones that I really like are the ones who made by El Gato however if you do a little searching online and you search for video digital interface there are some other ones and there's one right now that's fairly affordable from e can get h Made by I o gear. I think it's like ninety nine bucks That people are saying works. Pretty well and the supply of those seem to be you know pretty regular. I know that this is probably the one thing that many people don't have but is the one thing that many people should get in especially in our audience because our audience as full of people who have these beautiful Sony Olympus Panasonic Fujifilm Nikon Canon cameras right. If you have a cannon camera by the way cannon just came out with some software that you can use and you don't have to get the digital interface and just play your cannon camera in so if you're a canon shooter you may want to check that out

Apples MacBooks have finally gotten rid of the butterfly keyboard

"Apple's butterfly keyboard which endured endless shots from fans and critics like finally gone. Welcome to the age of the magic keyboard. I'm Roger Chang and this is your daily charge with me. Is One of the foremost experts laptops our own. Dan Ackerman welcomed in Roger. Apple just released. Thirteen inch MAC pro which comes with one of its new magic keyboards that essentially wipes out the butterfly keyboard from its lineup right. How are you feeling about that you know? This was the last butterfly keyboard that was left. Was it was one of the reasons why that thirteen inch pro? A little bit outdated compared to the rest of the math book line. They updated the fifteen inch last year. And turn it into a sixteen inch and that was the first time they said all right this keyboard. No more we're going to call it the magic keyboard and it's a little different than it's the same but it's better you like it and we did. Then they finally did the same thing for the macbook air back in March very recently so and they say hey we got some more bad news coming up though. That's got be the thirty. The one laptop left a thirteen inch bro. So that you know there are a couple of things about it that we're feeling a little dated. The keyboard was one of them and now everybody has done magic keyboard. It's interesting they used that branding on the ipad keyboard also and also understand keyboard. You get with your. I'm AC. Let's back things up a little bit and let's talk a bit about the butterfly keyboard. What was so controversial about all the problems? They snuck that butterfly keyboard in with a new product. Five years ago it was the twelve inch Mac but not air not pro just MAC book they had not had a product with just that name at a longtime although they used to and one of the things that made that twelve inch. Mac Book which I loved so small and portable was over putting the super flat keyboard in and it's not going to have a Z shaped scissors switch under the key like so many other laptops it's GonNa have a butterfly which is basically the four corners and the sensor would indicate when a key was depressed so they could make it super slim. Did it in there? The problem was it was so slim. It didn't really feel like you were typing it all. It didn't have that right. Feel at also people immediately started getting the key stuck because there was so little space underneath them any little bit a dust debris would get in there so immediately. There were a lot of problems with it. And what apple did was they said. Oh that's great. We're going to put these in everything.

Apple launches new MacBook Pro with updated keyboard

"Say Goodbye to the butterfly keyboard on Monday. Apple announced a new thirteen inch macbook pro which features double the minimum storage on previous models. Faster processors better memory and a return to the traditional scissor mechanism. The decision comes after multiple lawsuits over the butterfly keyboards which were introduced in twenty fifteen to enable thinner laptops but they also suffered reliability problems like duplicate or missed keys since then apple has been forced to offer replacement programs and has been slowly phasing out the butterfly mechanism with the latest model. The company no longer has a single butterfly left in its lineup.

Apple launches new MacBook Pro with updated keyboard

"The new MAC pro. Thirteen inch looks great for photographers. So this just got announced today on Monday when I record the podcast. Their new thirteen inch macbook pro. This is what I've been waiting for now. The fifteen inch. The new fifteen inch has already been announced but personally I like the thirteen inch a little bit better. I think is a little bit more portable in the screens are so good that I do just fine doing my work on it and I was really curious to see what the specs we're going to be on this new machine and what the pricing is going to be. So I'm going to go over the machine. The I think makes the most sense for photographers and that version has the Intel core. I five quad core processor right which is very nice. Eight gigabytes of Ram Onboard Ram. And then the five twelve gigabyte SSD. So that's the model that I'm talking about right now. It's not the cheapest one but there's only one up from the cheapest one by the way this laptop that I'm talking about brand new is one thousand. Four hundred ninety nine dollars. Seems like I paid that much or more for my existing thirteen inch which by the way I bought in early. Two Thousand Fourteen early two thousand fourteen. And it's you know it's still working. I to upgrade it. This one might be a machine that I do if I can get the scratched together to do it. But they are good investments seriously. They are getting investments. They they go and go and go. So what makes this new one kind of cool well has a number of highlights first of all this one has the new. Magic Keyboard has the redesign scissor mechanism. So that part I think alone at the keyboard on these new ones is the good keyboard not the one that has some problems a couple of years ago. Very nice retina display They made to the stereo sound better and they have these immersive stereo speakers in the battery. Life is a bit better to now. This one also has the touch bar. Which is very nice. The touch part self is actually a retina display as well and it's contextual depends on you know which APP you're renting as to you. Know what options are there on? It is sort of adapts Depending on what you're doing at the moment in a really makes it easier to navigate menus and things like that the power button has the touch. Id Sensor so you can quickly log in to the macbook pro. Just by you know putting your finger on their fingerprint and then you can also use touch. Id to make purchases over the web if you have apple pay. So that's another very nice feature so as I mentioned before the model that I like is the one thousand four hundred ninety nine dollar model one point four gigahertz eighth generation Intel core. I five Qui- core processor with a burst. Speed up to three point nine gigahertz and then it also has the eight gigabytes of Ram in the five twelve gigabyte. Ssd alrighty now in terms of supporting external devices is got thunderbolt three ports supporting bi directional transfer speeds of up to forty gigabytes a second while also supporting ten gigabytes per second USB three point one and device charging Scott Wi fi five eight zero two point eleven A. C. Built in for Wireless Networking Bluetooth. Five Point Oh which will allow you. To connect additional compatible peripherals and there is a facetime hd Webcam so nice looking machine comes in space gray or silver always kinda wanted the space gray version of Mac book. I don't know we'll see. This is the most tempted. I've been to upgrade my two thousand fourteen thirteen inch and We'll see how things go I'm posting of course the podcast on facebook. If you have any comments about this machine or if you're tempted to upgrade to it

"From creative carpentry dot net three one two nine eight one seventy two hundred is our phone number Mike at his wife LA are here here's a question for you a text message how often do I need to add blown insulation to our attic our house is fifteen years old well depending it now there you norm in our area is going to be in our thirty eight so you're looking about thirteen fourteen inches worth of insulation okay okay recommended is it is going to be more like our forty nine so maybe fourteen to sixteen inches it's like you're speaking even mention I mean like I. know what our forty nine it well then why belly shaking her head down I know what it means he has no idea what you're talking about. yeah it's it's just the rating that review of rock insulation value okay thirty eight is required all right so when you have blown in insulation you're talking about thirteen inches let's say of of blown in insulation but now they're saying it should be more like our forty nine so you're going from thirty eight forty nine so at that point may be anywhere from the fourteen to eighteen inches right and and and the more you have basically the better I mean you can just have too much obviously but but that's where you lose all your your sheet really between a windows in your attic vents in right now so so why not loaded up yeah and and heat rises so you want to keep that is insulators you count so measure from your your dry wall of your ceiling of your top floor okay and you should have at least thirteen inches if you don't I would recommend you have some more putting got it okay Tom in Chicago time thanks for holding your own with my columns what's your question. well yeah I hear of a you know a good ride the water comes in the at the base of the cement foundation is there anything it could just three role and from the outside or inside. even the water coming into the garage it seeps through like the cement I I'm I'm not exactly sure you're you're saying you're a garage is like it your basement level. it's a monetary a chicas okay and if the basis you know where to send them to the foundation is and the sight ball water comes true is up between that that little curve in the flat part of your. okay yeah they have beautiful **** is probably what I would recommend it it's a it's a very old alas to stick car can no stress like eight hundred percent it's beautiful **** I would try that just put that around the perimeter if it's seeping through the crack okay yeah that would be my first saying you conceal a concrete but the problem with that is to really just sealing it basically on the line the top level and if it's no saturated and it's soaking up through the slab is not can really do much they're looking at could you spell that okay. you probably be U. T. Y. L.. you're right P. T. Y. L. yeah that's why I bring her folks I can stuff. yeah I appreciate that thank you very much thanks Tom okay by now thanks buddy all right let's go to Jack from Elgin Jackie been on hold while thank you for holding what's your question. well I got a real dilemma because it took me for a long time to get a contractor with reduced stained and reseal my stamp patio it's quite old and bleached out. and I'm gonna say as I woke up this morning. eighty percent of it is beautiful shining and the acting our huge twenty percent surcharge. it's all right which restrained intake of a similar to intake I'm I'm wondering if you're trapped water under there or something my guess is it's the sealer. because it it it sounds because you're saying it's like cloudy. yes well yeah my guess is that it's a sealer I would call a contractor backing and haven't take a look at it I mean he knows his products and and he may be able to tell you something different but my guess is it's a sealer and they might have to strip that off but definitely call your contractor back given the chance to take a look at and see what he thinks. so there's this chain right now they were tired I'm telling you like it to be beautiful I understand course so you don't eighty percent there was your hundred yeah things happen and and you can't really say it's the contractor's fault at this point we don't know right I always say give him the chance to correct the problem and make it right and and go that route first all right Jack okay thank you very much thank you guys thank you all right thank you so much Michael this here creative carpentry dot net is is is a website time to hear from Lindsay about what's new at builders supply out. hi.

"I think the verdict is out, whether or not the how good they did so Diener. You mean you, you played with it. You open Google docs, did the whole thing, what do you think it? It is the verdict is out. It is unclear one of two things one of three things happened one, they like took like proper mobile safari. And like did some real ports and like put it on the ipad and it just works better than now along with two. They have figured out how to do a better job of making touch work on a bunch of different websites, that are don't expect to have touch, or three. They have gone through the most popular websites that people complain about the most and made sure that they work amongst all that. The thing they, they clearly did as a change the browsers user agent to desktop safari. So the it is desktop safari. That's what website sees. And then when you go there, it will present it will try and send you the desktop version instead of just assuming you're on, like a big s iphone and then safari on the ipad will be like, well, this actually kind of sucks. I'm going to refloat this website, a little bit to make it better. And then I'm gonna put like this layer in between that optimizes. It for touch. So they are like, rerun during a website, and they're optimizing it for touch, and they're quote unquote lying. I don't know about what kind of browser they are all that adds up to me like they didn't take safari from the MAC and put it on the ipad. It's still basically mobile safari. But it's more capable now. And they're doing much more work to get websites that don't aren't optimized for mobile safari in the way that in a perfect world, they would be, and they're basically, like, you know, what are our bubble safari, actually could work with your thing. If you weren't idiots who didn't know how to co two web page. So we're just going to do that for you. So here my questions, there's so many of them. Okay. One, just like philosophically in the world of responsive websites, which is based in the world, the tablet, breakpoint gone. Right. Like you're not doing that. Like you're still making a break point for different sizes. Beer, not like turning it into some mobile version at the tablet break point in some cases, some websites do, but. I'm with you. You're not doing the like, here's the mobile experience some subset of functionality. Here's the sort of middle one. And then here's the desktop one with all the buttons, right, like, right. That middle zone is going away. This makes sense. Unlike the thirteen inch ipad pro because it's a it's a laptop size display. Right. It kind of makes sense in the eleven are they going to do this? I had many because that's like to me like the funniest idea. So that's like one question like you know that the whole world is kind of built itself around like there's an ipad class, an ipad breakpoint class, we're going to build websites that do ipad stuff. But now they're saying it sets up safari. That's going to be super interesting. How are they going to rewrite it? Yep. Second big question this one, I kind of, like, if even more philosophical, it's like what is a desktop class browser because we what we have been what we've always meant is a bunch of these web apps. Don't work here and you get kicked him using an ipad app in the app. Had obser- often inferior the. The, the example is Google docs, Google docs, ripe had is just an inferior product as an app in a were very clear that Google docs on the web now works in this browser. They're very clear that a bunch of like web Zia messes work in this browser. I think that is in particular directed at, like product review. I. I can't use this as my laptop because my like rinky-dink CMS, I won't name names. But like we know these folks doesn't work in it. So I, I have to go to laptop to file that is not true. Vox media, by the way. Yeah. Chorus are we can use chorus from an ipad right now at works. Fine, you can use correspond iphone, if you're by the way, major media company or in the market for a new CMS courses not available for licensing..

"Much less. Nah. School is low. Well, we'll see about tomorrow. But I will tell you these. Has gotten very creative. Andy jank's, our friend from Henrico schools posted a video on his. If you go to the Facebook, the Henrico county school Facebook page, he did a video the Hanover. Folks, did a video announcing the school closing the snow busters to the tune of Ghostbusters. Got a lot of the people at different schools in the central office of very creative stuff. But anyway, yeah. The least surprising moment of the day was when you got that text or Email or robocaller, whatever that are all of the above in the case of me and Enrico all the schools are close. But yeah, some of the snow totals. I live in Glen Allen. It was probably thirteen to fourteen inches at my house. We talked to Matt DEM line earlier who lives in western Chesterfield. He said about thirteen inches. It has house. Matt said, you know, ten eleven at his house. Maybe a foot of some of the snow totals. We've seen thirteen and a half at middle in mid Lowthian twelve ad down in Chesterfield eleven and a half in Hopewell thirteen in short pump, twelve and a half an Ashland the official total at the airport was eleven and a half. And that makes it the sixth snowiest December record. That's got a funny to me. It's it's just funny that one snow, and it's the six snowiest December on record. And we've still got three weeks to go the biggest snowfall. It's the second. Biggest snowfall ever in December in Richmond. The biggest was in nineteen. Oh eight and if you remember that fifteen inches in December twenty second nineteen o eight think they had a white Christmas that year how about that? But that is the that's the details on the amount of snow. We got when they were calling for two to four. Few things shifted and here we are with a foot of snow all across the metro hundred eleven flights were canceled yesterday. At r I c thirty seven more today. V dot crews are working twelve hour shifts and starting to get to the neighborhood roads. Vida. Yeah. The the the people who clear roads have done a phenomenal. Job so far. I mean, it's like when I got out of my neighborhood this morning. I was like this is not what I would normally expect on the morning after a foot of snow. I would expect it to be later than that. And others have echoed that same sentiment. So the clearing of the primary roads has gone much better than expected between the pre-trading and the plows being out in force. So my guess is today the attack on the neighborhood roads gets underway, which means if you don't have to be out. Don't let them do their job. One.

"If you're right. Why would you ever why is this a thing? Why would you ever give someone this test? It's practical, I guess length. Right. Hello world. It's like well. You're going to give me a problem, or are you just going to whatever like fizz buzz seems to have no utility interview process, and yet fizz buzz is described in this page that will put in the show, it's probably as a way to filter out the ninety nine point five percent of programming job candidates who can't seem to program in the way, they were back. Like it actually is it useful. It actually is useful tool. You would think that it's not a useful tool at all. It's like I'm asking you to do literally the minimum necessary in any language, you want just show that you can program like almost anything it's harder than Hello world, but not much harder than Hello world. And yet it it ends up making interviewers lives easier because you just quickly eliminate the people who just can't do it at all. And it's kind of I don't know. I'm trying to can't them analogy for another job. But it's like if you're hiring somebody to be a painter, and you ask the you brought in like one square. Foot. Piece of wood and said police paint this piece of wood. And and like ninety nine percent of them. Couldn't do it. You like eliminated all the patriots who can't paint at. All. Right. Like, you're not even just going to how how well they pay. And how elegant solution is it like paint the square and someone gets a bucket of pain in on their head. You're like, hey well. I didn't get any paint on the square the job of painting. Really does involve putting the paint where we want you to like that's phys bus. And it is, you know, it's not it's not an obscure thing in the world of a permanent interviews, it's kind of a sad statement. But it's true. But like I said if you do want to get a job at like, Google or something they're going to ask you to hell of a lot more than physicals, but not every job is Google. And maybe, you know, they're Google gives you free food and does your laundry, and whatever the hell they do. You can find a really good borrowing job, much smaller less high profile places. So thanks again to chat, I thought that was really good feedback. Finally, John what up in a five K displays and this is relevant because my dad actually just two day received a brand new thirteen inch macbook pro and quick aside. He actually his initial response to the touch bar was positive. He seemed really into it based on fifteen minutes use. But I was somewhat surprised by that. But nevertheless, he has also bought himself the LG five K display. Hey, I haven't told him how hit or miss those things. All right. I I'm trying not to open that can of worms. But nevertheless. Your two ago when I was looking into this for work. I was looking to potentially getting a five K display ended up getting a four K display or two four kids displays actually, and they worked really well in at the time there were at least a handful of options for five K displays most notably del mate one that seemed to be reasonably well received. But it seems John that they're all gone now tell me about this. I thought of this because of how upset I was apple said, they were gonna stop making displays, of course. Now, apple said, they are going to make this place over in the good times now, but in the battle oh apple should make display because then I was still is the reasons why like apple displays. But even then even in my depths of despair it, and they okay. Well. Evaldo stops making displays I would have to buy like the Dell display or some Eljay display that we just talked about her like, I don't know. Acis display or who knows NEC display. I'd I'd have to buy a non apple five kids. But since I haven't been paying attention to this market at all Adam angst, and tidbits writes that if you want to buy a five K display, it's not like you can go to all those vendors that I just listed and just you know, are like some weird bargain-basement one from Korea with a no name brand. Like, you don't have a lot of choices. In fact, if you want to buy one like your only choice is the ultra-fine five display.

"I wanna thirteen inch or fifteen inch and how much storage do I want and that would set the price different. But all other factors would be the same. And you might be going. Well, that's crazy because I want to be able to pick, you know, to upgrade to the better GPU or to the better CPU in the point. Here would be you would have the top of the line across the board. Just like you do with an iphone, right? There's no difference between the processor in the GP. That's in the seven hundred dollar iphone ten are versus the one thousand ninety nine dollar. Ten s max, right? The difference between those models. Are you know, the cameras? It's other components. But for raw processing power, you're getting. Exactly the same device, and that could be an an interesting approach for max moving forward. And I kind of like that idea. It sounds very interesting to me, you know, apple making the custom configuration thing something of the past. We'll just point out for those of you who don't know some some of us have been around long enough to know apple didn't even do this custom configuration thing and tell the mid nineties when they actually bought Power Computing about the time the Steve Jobs came back to apple or a little bit. After the time that Steve Jobs came back to apple and kill the licensing program. They bought out Power Computing in the main reason they bought out Power Computing was Power Computing had this great online system for custom configuring builds in components, and that's when that got rolled into Apple's online ordering system or what ultimately became Apple's online ordering system east out to go into a retail store or go through an authorized reseller to buy your app..

"It's it's absolutely wonderful. So there are two ipads. There is the eleven inch. There is the thirteen inch. Which one is right for most people. So I use I have been using both I pads frequently right? Like, I have my uses had been using the ten point five one. I travel also using embed to read videos and to use it in the morning, and then was use the twelve point nine as my work machine where I'm doing all of my communication. My Email my show planning, you know, all of my administration. Everything's going in the. The me. Nothing's changed. Because even though the thirteen inch is physically smaller. The me it's not necessarily the physical size. It's the thirteen inches of screen is more screen than I want in those scenarios like night. That's too bright. It's too big too bright when I'm reading in bed at night next to my wife, right like it's too much light. And the eleven is still smaller is still lighter is still less expensive. You know, I actually still think that the eleven inch ipad, especially now that it is eleven inches more than ten point flying. I think that it is actually even more than ten point five the ri- Pathum most people, I think the trade offs that you will experience like slightly less than full apps and multitasking slightly less than a full size onscreen keyboard, they will with it. If you if you believe, and if you know that the ipad is going to be a serious, your working set up the thirteen inch is the right one for you. Otherwise, you should get the eleven inch. Because I think that these smaller I pro is now better than it's ever been. So if you're in that camp, you have a much much better option available to you. So I sort of agree with you and sort of disagree with you. I feel like with this generation with a thirteen getting smaller that the I think the eleven is still the right. The smaller of the two is still the right ipad pro for a majority of people. I feel like that percentage is less than it used to be. I think I agree with. I think I think it's if it was seventy thirty it's sixty forty now feel like because I feel like with the thirteen being so much smaller so much less kind of ungainly to hold the benefits. You get in terms of the bigger screen, the better multitasking, the better keyboard that for a certain class of user that's larger maybe who might who might before been like. Oh, yeah. I like all those things point. It's just so huge. It's going to be. It's less awkward. It's less gain Li it's more of a pleasant device to hold the I think closer. But I think you're. I think the eleven is still the more likely choice. I will say. You know, who is who is the eleven four the eleven is is powerful and beautiful and has all of these stories, and that's great. If part of me wants to say that the eleven inch. I've had pro is kind of people who want the nicest ipad possible, but may not be using it as an ipad pro like because really if the smaller screen doesn't bother it's bigger than the ipad at three fifty. But like for three hundred fifty dollars you can get an ipad and it has pencil supported the pencil. I know, but you can get that. And you can get a keyboard case for it. If you even want to type on it, and you can do multitasking and all these things like if you're going to spend seven ninety nine on the eleven I do think like there is a question to ask yourself, which is at this point. What are you gonna use it for and if you really going to use it for multitasking and things like that consider that thirteen it's not as ungainly as it was that'll said, I do think for most people the eleven is for more people than than not the eleven is the right one to choose. I use. I've used them both. And it's funny because going into this. I was really thinking that I might go down to the smaller ipad because the larger ipad was love the screen. But it's just you know, it was. Load. It is you know, it's a heavy thing..

"Code clockwise twenty eighteen at checkout. Thanks so much to Leonard for supporting this show and relay FM, and now let's move onto the topic. From Dan one of the big announcements of this apple event today was a new MAC book air. It's a thirteen inch MAC book air end. You know, it's interesting because it gets a self stacked into the lineup alongside a twelve point one inch MAC book and thirteen inch MAC book pro. So my question for you is how do you feel like this fits into Apple's laptop lineup? Why are there so many machines that sort of hover around the same size? But there's not really a clear hierarchy. Do you think this is like a better than the MAC book because it not as good as the MAC book? Like, where do you see this fitting into Apple's overall laptop story, Alex, I'm kind of stoked about this laptop? Honestly, I know that there's no use BA. And we knew that USB was coming. But I feel like I can finally tell somebody if they are just a middle of the road computer person, they want something nice, but they don't have a desktop. This is again, the laptop for you. And with the MAC book. I just never felt like I could say that. And the even the MAC book escape felt like it was too much money even at our company people like, Alex, what should we by everybody? Like. So I don't think that the the smallest book is going to go away for well because people keep buying it. And it's kind of cute, and it's a luxury product, which you know, apple is known for. So in terms of Apple's MAC line in general, it's like the least egregious sin. I think oh boy. So I'm going to have to say that I'm also super pumped about this macbook air. I know that's not quite the answer that din asked. But the fact is I think that this MAC book air is that that model that Alex is talking about when someone comes to me and says, hey, what MAC book, do I get this is the one I can tell them, and it is the device that like so many writers have used over the years, and so many college students have used over the years. This is I've known so many people who've owned a MAC book air in the past. And so to have this back and have it be good? And finally have. Display like a modern computer is really nice. And I'm kind of jealous that there's a touch ID because I still don't have that. But yeah, I think that I do think this is the end of the MAC book, probably unless the MAC book is sort of dislike. Just make this our spaghetti project book, and we just sort of will try new things and throw things at the wall. And again, of course, see what sticks. So I'm not sure what about you. Well, there's no one going around asking me what computers to buy. And I haven't owned a laptop since college. So I don't know. I think it's the new hotness. You know, as displayed by that video wrapped in silken billowing as as you do this is what you want to buy. So I don't know. I am kind of intrigued about it. I have been thinking about getting a laptop into my life, especially when travelling I need to play games on the go. So I need to really say how Steve has team works out on the sucker. Right. Like, let's see how how that goes. Yeah. I have I think as far as I can go in this one. I think it looks cool. And I think I kind of want one..

"Who is the president of the Minnesota association, accounting veterans, service officers and the Goodhew count. Mtti veterans service officer Robbie welcome back to Minnesota military radio. Thanks for having me. It's going to be back Robbie we hear rumors that you extended your term as president for an additional years that true true lie was elected four one more term, and this will be our seventy fifth year. So it's an honor to be the president of the association for the Minnesota association, accounting, veterans, service officers and server veterans. We'll look forward to talking to you over the course of the next year. Then very had one good year. We'll have a great second year today. We wanted to talk a little bit about government issued headstones and says here that the department of veterans affairs furnishes upon request at no charge. The applicant a government headstone or marker for the unmarked grave of any deceased. Eligible veteran in any cemetery around the world, regardless of their day to death. So Robbie who is eligible for a headstone or marker. Veterans discharged under conditions other than dishonorable and any member of the armed forces of the United States guys on active duty may be eligible for veterans do serve after nineteen eighty there is a twenty four months service requirement. So that's all for active duty how about our garden. Reservists? Are they eligible for these benefits? Well reserve at the national guard members who at the time of death were entitled to retired pay or would have been entitled bright for being under the age of fifth year eligible and reserve it's called active duty for other than training and national guard members who were federalized who served for the period they're called for eligible. So. One more thing on that person who only have limited active duty service for training while in the national guard or reserves they're not eligible unless there's some kind of special circumstance like death while on active duty, so they had to be called a fraction of duty. And I imagine if they check with their local county veterans service officer, they can find out whether or not they're eligible. So what type of markers are? Furnished by VA VA got four different types headphones one of the upright, granite, and marble headstone. It depends where you can winters long thirteen inches wide. About two hundred and thirty pounds. In the second type. Well, they've got a flat markers. They got a flat bronze and a flat, granite or marble. The flat. Bronze grave markers are twenty four inches long twelve inches wide. I wear three quarter inch rising them out awake about eighteen pounds. The VA does provide the anchor bolts washer for fast and into a base. But they don't I the base and the Greenwich marvel or about the same size about one hundred thirty pounds. There's also abroad which is about eight a half inches long five and a half inches wide. They weigh about three pounds and mounting bolts and washers are furnished with the marker. And they've also got what they call them a guy. This is a medallion that states that the person was a veteran in the United States military, and it says on there, whether they were better another navy army, air force, Marine Corps or coast guard and those are also available. Just the one thing about these markers. These are the ones that are for veterans who are buried in private cemeteries, and the surviving family members will be responsible for paying to get those setup. So for those families that might have buried their veteran, a private cemetery and have no marking on there, then they can get a hold of their county veterans service officer and requested medallion. Yes, they can alive. For this or any other type of veterans benefits, they need to get in contact with the county veterans service officer and their county and date will be very glad to help them out. Very good Robbie thanks for joining us again today. Thanks for having me look forward to working with you for another year. We're looking forward to it as well. That was Robbie Robertson. The president of the Minnesota association of county veterans service officers and the Goodhew county veterans service officer, we're just about out of time. Thanks for listening to this addition in Minnesota military radio like to thank our guests for joining us this week. The honorable Robert Wilkie secretary of the United States Department of veterans affairs. John Donovan Robbie Robinson Commissioner. Larry shell toes? The Minnesota department of veterans affairs and finally Minnesota's adjutant general Major General John Jensen, please join us next week as we talk about the Minneapolis Fisher houses and get an update on family readiness..

"So I don't know what I'm going to do, and I'm certainly going to at the very least wait until the MAC book. One slash adorable, get some sort of update or perhaps it gets removed or whatever the case may be, but it would not surprise me if the Casey from six months from now ends up with. The thirteen inch macbook Pro Bowl sudden I got to say, like, you know, when when you if you think about like what kind of bang for the buck you're getting both for money and for like size and weight. What you get for the thirteen inch performance wise, flexibility wise. I'm not including the escape in this really because of the, you know, it's to port limitation is is pretty annoying and and and I and now now the touch bar version of it has a pretty large performance advantage over, but you literally are getting like what was yesterday? Fifteen inch class performance in a thirteen hundred top. That is only one pound bigger than your twelve inch like it is. And that's, you know, that's a fifty percent increase. That's not. That's not a small increase, you know, relatively speaking, but it's still a super small, super portable laptop this. This is the size thirteen inches and three pounds is the size of the thirteen inch macbook air approximately. It's so it's basically a map book air by by most people's recollections, our definitions of what that means and so to have this performance in it and have all four years. Seaports is awesome. And it is by far I think the best bang for the buck of what you're getting in in size and performance. If you actually want bang for the buck specs wise, I think the entry level fifteen inches always that you know the the entry level fifteen is always best bang for the buck for sheer specs. And if this was my computer is probably still want the fifteen just for the extra grunt and screen space and GP and everything else. But but as the secondary portable computer, I, I have. Zero temptation to go down to the twelve inch because this to me is close enough in size and is just so much more computer. I totally hear that. Speaking of size related things, like you mentioned, the side vent thing is the same side venture on the fifteen inch by magin. They aren't bothersome because it's fifteen inches wider. So they ended up not digging into your likes, says much. 'cause they're more towards the middle of your legs in the edges. Yeah, that's possible. I mean, and that's actually lap Organon of all these things. I also think thirteen is the best balance for that. The twelve. I mentioned before the twelve inch I found during the day I had one, I I did. did not find it comfortable to use in my lap. I just maybe it's just like, you know, the size of my legs or how you know the spacing of my legs or whatever it is like I couldn't make it comfortable use my lap. It was too small and whereas the thirteen and fifteen are much more comfortable for me to use that way. So once again, Casey, I will also push you in the direction of for God's sakes. Thirteen. On the vent things as well. This reminds me of, I think it was the first round of unibody where the the actual edges of the laptop when the lid was open, like the edges of the bottom part were pretty sharp and people complained about it like being uncomfortably sharp. If you hide your risk there, you shouldn't rescue us while you type anyway. But anyway, that sharpen and Lynn later models. They dulled it down like they knocked off the edge a little bit on all the unibody. That's what they've been doing from that point on all of the modern university, allow tops have the edges knocked down for the most part. So they're not super sharp except for apparently. And I've noticed this too, and I carry mine around at work because I feel alleges well, except for the little vintages. So a revision that apple could make if they actually introduce a twenty nineteen version of the same model, which I really hope they don't do hope..

"Dot com slash apple insider, Andrew, thank you so much for coming, and we will see you next week. Yeah, of course. I can't wait. All right. All right, and welcome back. Joining me is Mike Wesley, Hillary buddy. Mike. I was just talking with Andrew about macbook pros. So now I'd like to pick up that same beat with you and talk about the thirteen inch. You wrote a little bit about the thirteen inch and what's new with it. The again, it's important to remember that the non touch bar model. The function key model is exactly the same as last year is it has seen zero changes that said, the touch bar model has seen a number of changes including the quad core, which we talked about a little bit last week and we've been covering all we come up on cider, but a more recent discovery is that because of the shift to the I five eighty two fifty nine. You processor the all four of the thunderbolt ports in the thirteen inch macro or now full bandwidth. So just a little bit of a brief history recap the two thousand sixteen in two thousand seventeen touch bar. Macbook pro were limited in bandwidth. The right side was full. Forty gigabits per second connectivity. The left side was twenty four gigabits per second connectivity. So things on the left side like single drive cases and keyboards and slower peripherals were fine on the left side. I mean, it'd been really still faster than USB three point. One type c. or even three point, two type c now. But you know, now go nuts hookup, anything full been with any of the thunderbolts reports on the thirteen inch macrey pro, and you won't have a problem at all devices fit under that full band with need. Well, most most what we're talking about, here's five k. monitors or a raid arrays of SSD's hard-drive big hard-drive raise it would have to be, but to get the comes speed, you only really talking about like, say, a four or six SSD raid if you're using simulate TA or if you using dot too, that's only two or three Dr rate in that. So it really depends on your workflow. It depends on what you're trying to do and in what your needs are, which is kind of the whole thing with all. Crows a lot of they're not ideal for every workflow there. There's no universal machine that will fit every workflow, but we'll be talking about an apple insider in the future. Nearly now I was I was fishing. I was thinking you were gonna tell me GP. Well, ECP was a separate matter the the GPA us. I don't really see. It wasn't really huge problem that all the ports didn't have full bandwidth because you had to had full because each abuse are is the easiest way to get to a max band with situation on the macro and Thunderball three. So in conjunction with that, we've tested the black magic, Hugh, the video guys have done that for us and alongside that. I mean, that's an interesting one. The black magic GP was interesting because it's very, very quiet, and it is the first unit that you can connect thunderbolt three display to. But we've also learned very recently as in the last couple of hours before recorded this podcast that any USB see monitor can be connected to that. Thunderball three port. In addition to USB cables that use an alternate mode of US spec- like with HD Meyer display port on the other end of the USB connector, right. Can you try and say that one more time just to make sure that that ever gets it? Okay. Sure. Well, how how far back on my tell me about using a USB connector that's got an alternate cable alternate connector on the other end. Okay, but you can also do with the thunderbolt three connection as you can take a USB cable that has HD my or display port on the other end, what these are called her. These are called alternate mode cables. It's a protocol that USB see allows for it. It's what allows for no HDMI ports on the outside of a MAC book pro. And so if you had a couple of four k. monitors you could hook two cables in two monitors with the black magic Egypt. Yes. I mean, you could do that on. You can do multiple cables from an older AGP that doesn't have a Thunderbird three display support. But again, the black magic, Egypt was the first one that will allow you to up your l. g..

"I. But they're so no, I feel like so many people would be willing to be like, yeah, take my money. Even people who have twenty sixteen models who wouldn't be like, oh, you OB discount. They'd be like, no, just, you know either because because also assuming that they have this, this methodology, there's nothing that implies that there's no way that they couldn't apply this technique to existing laptops. Uh-huh. So to me, I mean, it gonna be like, well, if you do run into this problem now we have a way to make sure it's not going to happen again. I don't know. I feel like it'd be a win for them to just like acknowledge the situation. What is interesting and I think it's worth noting. You mentioned breathe that you just bought a macbook or an I Mak rather and that you have the twenty twelve the twelve inch. Sorry, MAC book I was that was my only disappointment. I would have loved of seen the the MAC book get an update. I maybe we'll see that this ball because I can't justify a another thirteen inch macbook pro. I just can't. I have one for work that works paid for. I could buy my own, but that would be weird. A fifteen inch as nice as that would be. I have a twenty seven inch, five k. I MAC, I don't need a fifteen inch MAC pros tush bar, especially now that the prices that they are which are absorb exorbitant. That that's one thing they didn't change, but if they had an updated. Knock book that would be, especially if it changed the keyboard mechanism. That would be one thing where I would be like, oh yes. I like having a MAC book pro for my video editing so that like 'cause I keep everything on dropbox than if you have a project that I'm working on on the I MAC, but I need to work from home Monday, for example, or if I just wanna work somewhere else in the office and not be kind of confined desk. It has been nice for me to have the I MAC in the macbook pro, but also work provided those for me. So very, no. I was going to say I have thirteen inch 2017 seventeen macbook pro with touch bar. I have one for their work provided me, I, you know, but but it's my work machine. It belongs to Microsoft, but it has all my own stuff on it. And then I. So I'm just saying if I were to buy another MAC book noon begins me to get a twelve not by heat of refresh you. Yeah, which were a little tight please, or to break may me. Yeah, yeah, yeah. I was just going to say this to me really differentiates the twelve inch Matt book in the thirteen inch macbook pro, the new, the new set, of course in there. If you look at the bench scores certainly have there's a really, really big performance difference between the fifteen inch in the thirteen inch..

"A macbook pro verses an ipad pro in any of the single core benchmarks case so if you want to order how they rank them and yes you know these are not all completely 'spect out a two thousand seventeen inch macbook pro thirteen inch was the top single core than we have a two thousand sixteen than we have the twelve point nine ipad and the started the to and the temple in five inch ipad those are both two thousand and seventy models but if you started going down more in multi core performance the ten point five and twelve at twelve point for twelve point nine into ipads came in second in multi core score so they actually outperformed amac book pro two thousand sixteen addition of cases we're talking about power and then if you talking about graphics performance from a pure if you want to test out the metal meddled you know apples graphs engine on the medal platform test the ipads outperformed both the sixteenth 2016 and 2017 mac put pros in addition there's another benchmark hold a gfx of the graphics benchmark test where the ipad pro ten point five in ipad protest point nine again both outperformed mouth pros from this year and last year like that's actually pretty surprising that is surprised would have not expected that and i know that benchmarks don't mean anything in regards the real world performance per se right it's going to be different but at the very least you're talking about a product on pure benchmarks an ipad pro now that can hang in some categories with a mac book pro.
