Microsoft's 0-Day Folly

"But. At some level if you can get a lot of them, that's aggregated value. It's it's not good. Speaking of not good. Last week's patch Tuesday. When when zd net subs up We've patch Tuesday saying Microsoft says attackers have used a windows zero day to spoof file signatures and another Roku Remote Code execution in the Internet explorer scripting engine to execute code on. USERS devices. We need to take a closer look and actually those two things are the subject of the podcast that we will get to because. It's just hard to believe what a closer look reveals. But we have a hundred and twenty new flaws. In Microsoft's software fixed last week making it the third largest patch bundle of all time topped only by each of the previous two months with good and July, weighing in with one hundred, twenty, nine and one, hundred, twenty, three fixes respectively. This month's bundle carried a bit more urgency than usual. Since one of those seventeen flaws which were classified critical was zero day underactive attack at the time of the updates and one of the remaining more than one hundred flaws rated as merely important was also a zero day being exploited in the wild and publicly disclosed. So not even secret. The first of the two is titled It's e Two, thousand twenty, thirteen, eighty scripting engine memory corruption vulnerability being scripting engine problem. We should not be surprised to learn that the source of the trouble is e eleven. It was reported by a researcher at Kaspersky lab, and since it could be invoked by a militias office document, the belief is that it was probably spotted being used in fishing campaign. Microsoft. Had this to say about it. They said in a web-based attacks scenario, an attacker could host a specially crafted website that is designed to exploit the vulnerability through I e and then. Convince a user to view the website. An attacker could also embed an activex control marked safe initialisation in an application or Microsoft Office document that hosts the I e. rendering engine. The attacker could also take advantage of compromised websites and websites that accept or host user provided content or advertisements. These websites could contain specially crafted content that could exploit owner ability in other words. Anything, that puts content. On a website that is able to evoke I e which we know they can. Can. Can do this. So keep this in mind when we get to the other end of this podcast because. It's unbelievable what the history of this is. So that remains a threat to anybody who hasn't yet applied last Tuesday's updates to their installation of windows ten. So obviously, it would be good to do that the second zero day despite being actively exploited in the wild and publicly known is only rated as important, which seems odd since it is CV twenty, twenty, fourteen, sixty, four and labeled someone innocuously as a windows spoofing vulnerability. Okay I suppose the scale of the problem should relate to what's being spoofed bugs description will catch your attention because it allows attackers to spook the identities of other companies when signing digitally signing an executable. Now, that's the way the press covered. We will get to the details a bit later and Microsoft's words. They said these spoofed signatures could allow an attacker to bypass security features. Intended to prevent improperly signed files from being loaded. Now, all of this is a bit of misdirection because the signatures are actually not being spoofed as we'll. We'll exp explain that later. So this too is not good but. Will cover the details at the end beyond those two day those two zero days. Five of the other critical bug fixes are for Microsoft's Windows Media Foundation, the multimedia framework and infrastructure, which has been used to render digital content ever since windows seven and since windows server two, thousand eight. In these cases successful exploitation would allow an attacker to install militias south ware manipulate data, or create new accounts. And among the rest because again, we had one hundred and twenty to choose from There's also twenty, two, thousand, ten, forty, six, another nasty one in the dot net framework affecting versions two point zero through four point eight. It's a remote code execution flaw. In the way dot net handles imports. An attacker could exploit this vulnerability to gain admin level control of the vulnerable system. This vulnerability would be exploited by uploading a specially crafted file to a web APP, which is, of course, not a heavy lift these days there's all kinds of Web APPs that are saying you know that that involve uploading user submitted stuff. This allows that to be exploited. So as always don't wait too long before

Nick Cannon Calls Out Female Comedians for Homophobic Tweets

"Comedians understand this Nick cannon out of all of the great liberal investigative journalists that exists in the world, all of the great progressives. Then have come out who are journalist who have come out against Kevin Hart. They could not find any homophobic tweets from other comedians. Of prestige. But you know, who did Nick freaking cannon. So Nick cannon decided to eliminate this hypocrisy in Hollywood and also in journalism. Nick canning is pointing out that Chelsea handler. And Amy Schumer. And. Sarah Silverman have used the exact words with no apologies. As a matter. Of fact, I did some research. They really did not use. The exact words. Let me just read it to you. Let me read it to you. Chelsea handler tweet it. This is what a f- bird likes like win. He flexes the F word not the F, u but the F A. Okay. That word that was the word used by. Chelsea handler. I don't hear an outcry. Where's the app quite ladies and gentlemen? Let's go step further. Sarah Silverman tweeted, and I quote, I don't mean this in hey for way. But the new bachelorettes et, Al. And I'm talking about sheep spelled out the whole word, not even the three letter rendering of the word. It rhymes with maggot. Spelled out the whole word late is a gentleman. Sarah Silverman said in a quote via tweet, I don't mean this in a hateful way. But the new bachelorettes at. Where's the outcry? Yeah. And any time somebody prefaces or statement with I really don't mean there's an hateful away. They actually do they specifically do. I'm not done. Amy Schumer, the great, darling. Of white liberal comedy, Amy Schumer. Said and I quote in a tweet. Enjoy sky fall Alps Ravs with rags. I'm about to deep knee. I'm about to get knee-deep in Helen hunt. Hashtag the sessions. Where's the outcry? And here's the thing. You're right. Juliet, none of these were even funny. Like first of all the first question from a comedian should be. Where's the funny, and then where's the outcry? But the irony. Is unreal. The fact that Kevin Hart tweet from two thousand nine two thousand ten where he said it's gay referencing his son possibly playing with his daughters dolls. Obviously an attempt at a joke. Some find it funny some finding Molly funny. He says it's gay and then Amy Schumer and. Sarah silverman. And Chelsea handler. They all use the F word. I mean, they go all out bigotry. I mean, that's bigoted. Not have all the way. I mean, gay is still unacceptable terminology. It was the context that he used it. But man, they use the f word to refer to gay people. Where's the outcry? Crickets, crickets, they're still hosting shows and doing movies and getting awards, no outcry. The network has not placed them under suspension. What's the difference? Why is there a difference here? Why? Four zero four eight nine two two seven zero three KOMO now. Four zero four eight nine two two seven zero three. Those of you who listen to me and are part of the LGBTQ community. Please call me if I'm wrong. Tell me why I'm wrong at tell me where I'm wrong at. Or is there a double standard here as it relates to the outcry against Kevin Hart, and the lack of an outcry against these other three comedians and believe me, ladies and gentlemen, there's more. Local news twenty four hours a day on air and talk on Twitter, powered by more than twenty seven hundred journalists and analysts in more than one hundred twenty countries in San Francisco, I'm Ed Baxter. This is Bloomberg. Juliette? Ed, thanks so much. Let's get by conversation with. Yes. Because CEO of wisdom, tree investments in Japan. We've been talking about the third quarter numbers that came through out of Japan today GDP, but I could pick up again in the fourth quarter and some of the other risks to the Japanese economy. Yes. But what do you think the bureau J can do now because we still have the sales tax hike flavored for October next year as well. Meaning that till we could still have to see a little bit of supportive policy. Absolutely. I mean, the Bank of Japan is decoupling from the Federal Reserve, I expect that we would see no changes to the interest rate policy from Japan really onto well past the Tokyo twenty twenty Olympics, and you put your finger on the pulse. Here the issue is fiscal policy. The consumption tax will go up in October two thousand nineteen so prime minister is now putting together a budget some fiscal policy to actually counter the drag from next year's tax side with additional spending you mentioned the Olympics in Japan in two twenty twenty as many as forty related sites have to be constructed including a new national stadium, and they are running into a problem right now with a shortage of workers, they're having to bring in folks, I believe five hundred thousand. From places like, Vietnam and Philippines. I'm wondering first of all if it's going to be sufficient now or whether we're going to find. Japanese authorities in a situation where they have to allow more workers in and secondarily, yes, but whether this is the thin end of the wedge as it were in redefining immigration policy. No, absolutely Japan is opening up. They have no choice. Like you point out. The war for talent in Japan is just intensifying and Joff the construction industry and some of the low end jobs, you find that some of the leading companies like he touchy or Toyota starting to have problems procuring engineers. And so, you know, prime minister Ave is putting together or pragmatic immigration policy. The changes did pass parliament. And I think slowly. But surely, you will see Japan becoming more diverse and more often immigrant country and to that end. How much of a boost is the twenty twenty Olympics gift to Japan just forward-looking when we are getting a lot of speculation that the global economy could hit that slowdown in two thousand twenty. Yeah. The construction boom is going on here. You know, I think that over. All the booze from the Olympics will be about one percent of GDP, and you may have seen that the accedes not just Tokyo, but some of the regional economies, for example, the sailing events, you know, he's going to be held somewhere in the regions of Japan. So you know, yes Tokyo is the main beneficiary of the Olympics. But some of the other parts of the country will also get their shot in the arm. So presumably in twenty twenty there's going to be a huge influx of tourists coming to Japan. But how is it the tourism industry right now? Oh, fantastic. I mean, you know, you find that the occupancy rates at the hotels are running in the high nineties, I mean, literally ninety five ninety eight percent if you wanted to get a room in one of the Tokyo hotels for the next couple of months. I mean, you would have to stand in line and queue up. And if you are paying in US stolas one hundred thirteen eighty three to the della intensive Jan, yes. Because always great to get your insight.
