"The message came into mission control at 9 O 8 p.m., April 13th, 1970. Okay. This is here to say again, please. Oh, here's the way we've had a problem. This is innovation now, bringing you stories of revolutionary ideas, emerging technologies, and the people behind the concepts that shape the future. While in route to the moon, an oxygen tank in the Apollo 13 service command module ruptured, setting off a chain of events that would come to be recognized as one of the most successful failures of all time. Just 13 minutes after the explosion, commander Jim lovell looked out the window to see evidence that pointed toward catastrophe. We are a very insulting out into the space. It's a guy. As the oxygen dissipated into space, so did the crew's hopes for a lunar landing. But an even bigger issue loomed, did the astronauts have the resources to return home. A dedicated team kicked into action, searching for solutions that would bring the crew back to earth. Failure was simply not an option. And 5 days, 22 hours and 54 minutes after launch, the crippled spacecraft arrived safely home, making 13 a lucky number. After all. For innovation now, I'm Jennifer pulley. Innovation now is produced by the National Institute of aerospace through collaboration with NASA and is distributed by WHR V

"Hello, everybody. Welcome to the past and the curious. My name is Mick Sullivan. And this is the penultimate, which is a fancy way to say second to last. The pen ultimate installment up the underwear chronicles. I promised 14 stories, this is story number 13. There's actually two other stories that will be in the book, in addition to a bunch of other shorter bits and the underwear Hall of Fame. Those you can find in the book when the book comes out, it's getting really, really close. We actually, as of November, 17th, it is I'm actually waiting the final proof so I can see the physical book, which is really, really exciting. And this week I have spent the entire week reading all of the stories out loud again and recording them for the audiobook version of icy Lincoln's underpants. So that is all very close. If you're listening to this in November, it's gonna be out if you are listening to this in the future. Maybe it's out already. This episode is about Garrett Morgan, who is someone we've covered in the show before one of my favorite people of all time. But this is a much deeper dive and the last time I think my friend Brian actually narrated it. This time it's me with a whole bunch more information. I can't wait to share it with you. Garrett Morgan, let's go. While growing up near Paris, Kentucky, Garrett Morgan's dresser wasn't filled with the soft white drawers he had heroically show the world later in life. Just as his underwear and pajama selection left a lot to be desired, the early circumstances of his life didn't offer a plethora of options either. Days brought hard work, probably while wearing scratchy, burlap undies, which were the common quick homemade underwear solution of the day. Night might have brought much needed sleep, but it was still in those same uncomfortable undies. A home full of older and younger siblings meant most of those undies had been, or were bound to be someone else's undies. This is the way it was with pretty much everything else in the house too. For the first part of their lives, Garrett's parents had been enslaved. When the American Civil War brought an end to slavery in the United States, mister and misses Morgan remained near the plantation where they had once lived. When baby Garrett came along in 1877, they were working as sharecroppers and raising a constantly growing family. Sharecropping is mostly what it sounds like, though people were typically pretty loose with the whole sharing part. Landowners allowed tenant farmers to grow crops on land in exchange for a large share of profits, and most cases the landowners helped themselves to the largest share, though the tenants did the labor. Between the hard work of farming, teaching, and feeding 11 growing kids who probably ate more than their fair share of the sharecropped crops, Garrett's parents had plenty to worry about. They may have wanted to give their kids an education, but it wasn't something that they could easily afford. In general, public schools were a thing of the future for Garrett's time and place. Though some larger cities might have had full public education available, it was not the norm. It wouldn't even be until Garrett was 41 years old, in 1918, that American children were legally required to finish elementary school at all. His occasional schooling, which he crammed in between working on the farm, amounted to a 6th grade education. Had there been more free public school to show up to after 6th grade? Walking through the door wouldn't have been a problem. He was always looking for new ways to feed his brain. Early on, Garrett figured out that using the brain in his head was his superpower. The boy had a knack for figuring out how things worked and solving problems when they didn't. At 14, he packed a few shirts, a pair of pants, and some undies that he wouldn't have to share, and went north to Cincinnati, Ohio. Alone in the city, the barely teenage boy soon found work as a handyman. Earnings were spent on two things, staying alive and learning. After paying for food, a room and the occasional new article of clothing, he was still a growing young man after all. He used the rest of the money to hire private tutors. Obviously, Garrett was responsible in addition to being smart. These teachers for hire helped him stitch together the pieces of a formal education to complement the real world experience he was rapping himself in already. A few years later, he made the fateful decision to move farther north to Cleveland, Ohio. He had heard that the largest clothing factory in the world was here. In addition to dozens of other shops filled with thousands of people who cut, stitched, and sewed everything wearable under the sun and moon. Each day, a never ending parade of baby dresses and men's suits and women's skirts, and an assortment of underwear were finished packed and shipped out to cover rear ends all across the country. Built on the banks of Lake Erie, Cleveland was a major center in America's garment industry, so it was a good place to be for a smart kid with a mechanical mind. Of course, no one knew what brilliance was swimming around between the ears of this new arrival, so Garrett started at the bottom. Sweeping floors. He quickly found a way to stand out. While he swept up the fabric scraps and threads, he noticed a problem. The constant use of the sewing machines around him loosened the belts, which drove the engines. This slowed down the people working since the machines required regular maintenance and repair. Not only was he able to repair the machines, but he devised a solution that kept the belt tight all day. Before long, he was an official shop mechanic. In 1901, he sold that first invention, a sewing machine belt tightener. Garrett was a man who liked to solve problems, so it was the first of many. Soon after, he was playing around with some chemicals in search of a way to lubricate thread so that it wouldn't burn when pulled quickly through a machine. When he casually wiped the new goop from his hand on a rag with curly fibers, Garrett was amazed to see the little ringlets entangles completely straightened. Wanting to confirm what he observed about the potion, he asked to borrow a neighbor's curly haired dog. When the animal returned home, the owner didn't recognize the little pup. Garrett's creation had magically straightened the hair and temporarily left it looking like another dog entirely. With some more tweaking, Garrett realized his concoction would make a great hair straightener for people too. Eventually, he sold the hair tonic under the company name of G a Morgan here refining company, but for the time being, he kept working in the clothing shops, slowly moving towards his destiny. When

Why Ron Howard Chose to Make New Hollywood Film 'Thirteen Lives'
"Did you choose to make a film like this? Because it really is almost unlike anything that I can think of. Well, thank you. And look, I've been blessed to have decades and decades in the visit and go back to a period that was still quite traditional where a Hollywood movie was a very unique thing. And. Audiences have shifted and changed and it's been very exciting for me and in a way energizing to recognize that change. Part of that is a kind of a globalization and an expectation of what a story can mean, what cinema can mean. And honesty and authenticity, particularly in a movie like this, it's based on real events, is become a standard and an expectation. I wanted to make sure that we push that to its most contemporary sort of limits. And really give audiences, you know, use modern technology and sinema to try to give audiences as much as possible a sense of what it was like to be there, which also means, you know, don't over dramatize. Don't ham it up. Now, in recent years, I've also been working on documentaries, and I have recognized through a lot of the documentary scenes that I've edited together and included in the films. The way people act under duress is often not as hyped up and dramatic as we tend to stage it in movies. And I tried to reflect that in this movie as well.

Why Colin Farrell Joined Ron Howard's New Blockbuster 'Thirteen Lives'
"Let me ask you the most basic question. What was the appeal to you in taking on a role like this? Well, one of the most heroic things about John Valentin and indeed many of the other people who were involved in this rescue was their humility. And was the apparent lack of the desire to be perceived as heroes. That they had, which is not just for show, talking to John and spending the hours on FaceTime that I spent with John. And researching all the guys that were involved, the humility was very, very clear and present. And plus, I was very humbled by the magnitude of the story by all the things that pooh was spoken about by the emotional and psychological and cultural importance of what was happening in real time in Thailand and how the Thai people came together. And also to be an actor to be somebody who involves oneself in the artifice of make believe and the attempt in trying to present it as a reality to portray these men of incredible strength and bravery was almost embarrassing. I couldn't be further from the kind of steel that they lived in and that they used and the kinds of psychological strength that they have that they leaned into to save these boys. So all those reasons, and look, it was a great script. It's a beautiful story. I wanted to work with Ron harrod. I'd loved his film since splash and parenthood and what have you. So it was ultimately as much of a no brainer as they ever speak about, you know?

'Thirteen Lives' Star Colin Farrell on the 2018 Events in Thailand
"We're all living in the same world. And however we feel about the world we're living in, we must recognize the existence of separation and division, which is more prominent now than any of the years I can remember as a 46 year old man. So to have a story that isn't Hollywood eyes, that wasn't created from the imagination of somebody that wants to present a more beautiful world. But was actually for moments in time in Thailand and globally for two weeks in 2018, a beautiful moment, albeit a scary moment to be a human being because the world's attention was focused on the dire need of these 13 people, 12 of which were young kids and one adult. It was an extraordinary thing to see everyone come together. And it just proved in a very practical way that we are at our best when we're considering the well-being of each other.

Thirteen Lives: The True Story of Boys Trapped in a Thai Cave
"Did a junket for the film 13 lives directed by Ron Howard, one of the stars Colin Farrell and others were my first interview. We're going to play that for you right now. My name is Eric metaxas. I'm the host of the Eric metaxas show. I think pretty obvious. Good to see all of you. And I've got some basic questions. I want you to pay close attention. These are going to be tough, hard hitting journalistic questions. Now, pooh, is that your name? My name, yes, sir. What was your relationship to the are you are you tied? That's my first time, yes. I thought so. What was your relationship to this story as it was unfolding in real time? In other words, while this is happening in Thailand, the whole world's paying attention. But as somebody who is tie, what were you thinking at the time? Obviously you weren't thinking you're going to be in a film about this in a few years or did that cross your mind? No. I think you answered already. It's the fact that I am tying. And this is a very cultural thing. We are a people that love to help one another. And when this situation happened, this is what we would do. I wanted to help. But like I mentioned before, I don't know how to dive. I could go up and cook for them because I do have a restaurant. I would take the time out to do that. But there were a lot of people there already, so it's best I say out of the way. So like many others, we just keep up with the news. And wish her the best. And also the best. It was a very it made you closer to your friends and your family and your loved ones because like I said also I have four kids and if one of my kids was sucking there at the time, lord, I don't know what I would do. And I would end up thanking all these divers and everybody who would be there to help them as it turned out to be that these guys start up and help the tight children.

"Everything you asked. You know, I killed, what's the name? Damon. I did this. I did that. This is okay. I killed Damian. It was all for you. That's a great movie. So 13 goes got 17% on the tomato meter. 17. 48% on the audience score. That's interesting. Good God. Yeah. Is a rotten tomato. Yeah, that's a spicy meatball. So the critics and the audiences got out the chainsaws and started hacking away. Interesting. I am the 48. Interesting. So Matthew Lillard was in the Scooby-Doo. And the curse of the 13th ghost. So that's kind of a world colliding. This just released on DVD, February 5th, 2019. I just had to know. 2019. Animated. You'll be doing the curse of the 13th goes. Interesting. He pointing to watch that and probably I do want to watch that and do a compare and contrast. 82 minutes long. I love that. That's like the hour and 15. And it was without a paddle, by the way. And I had to get over the third. What's that? Who's the third pad? I got sidetracked because apparently Matthew Lillard who was a phenomenal actor. Beetle and Graham. Since 2013 supplemental. He just all he does is Scooby-Doo. Yeah, electric boogaloo. And let's be honest, if any of us had that role, we would do that for give that hub. If I could be anybody Shaggy, you name it. I'll be scrappy do. You give me that crappy new money. I'll retire. Dax shepherd. And with a surprise appearance by Burt Reynolds. Oh. Interesting. Yeah. We'll deliverance action. I guess. I think 2004. One of my favorite memes I just saw the other day was if you could eat any animated or any food and animation, what would it be? Mine would be the eggs from Shrek is what the meme said. The comment write underneath that said, Daphne from Scooby-Doo's ass. Anyway, you can get that. Thank you Matthew Lillard. I absolutely will not cut that. I'm going to leave that. Right. I'm pretty much speak for our audience out there. But I'm here for it. God, damn. So 13 ghosts. Took 68.5 million at the box office against a $42 million budget. Senator profit. Yeah, it was fun. Modest profit. A modest profit. But probably also why we haven't seen SQLs to it since then. 14th ghost would be a little on the nose. Can I say 15 will be a busy movie? The last ghost we saw juggernaut ghost. I got this film in my head mixed up with the film with Michael J. Fox frighteners. Where I was a 100% sure that Jake busey played the juggernaut ghost in 13 ghosts. Honestly, I was like, oh my God, he's going to be a ghost twice? No way. I saw the film. I saw the juggernaut go so I was like, oh, that's not Jake BC. One of my thinking of, oh, that's right, frighteners. Yeah. I think the resemblance would have been better at Jake busey been in it. Yes. That's true of most movies. They could benefit from Jake busey as a ghost. Also, I would like to see a remake of Amadeus where Gary Busey plays soluble..

"All right, we're going to have you be a tree. Just be a tree out there. You know, the cameras aren't you're in the background. It's fine. We'll find a scenic like overpass somewhere where you can see to the ocean and then just have him pose for a picture, and then get in the car and drive off. You know? But that was the height of his career too, right? Scream, I think. Monsters unleashed. I think was up there. What was the bushwhack? Was that 2002? Yeah. This was 2001. Taylor said what you just said again? Was he in bushwhack? He was in the movie where there was a bunch of canoes. There was a canoe and they were in the battle. No, no. Seth founder paddle? Seth Green, without a paddle. Oh, that was it. Who is the third? Matthew Lillard, Seth Green. It wouldn't have been Sean William Scott. Could you say Matthew Lillard one more time, please? Matthew. It was a little touch and go. Anyway, talk amongst yourselves. Anyway, I mean, that was like his prime time. He was a definite 2000. Yeah. He was a high demand D list actor. I was like, we need someone that we can just give a back of Oreo of two and do a film. We're gonna call Matthew lyric. Can we refer to that as a dude? Where's my car era? Oh yeah. God. I don't mean to be so critical of him. He just got on my last goddamn nerve. Speaking of critical, this movie is on Roger Ebert's list of his top hated movies. Really? And obviously, hated is one of the things I loved about him is when he, when he loved a movie, he was all in, like he loved it all the way through when he loved her bonsai. Yeah. And when he hated a movie, oh, he loved tremors. Tremors was three and a half star movie for him. He hated 13 dose. With a passion, you read his review, it is like it is like an ice bucket challenge with sarcasm. And sarcasm. Yeah, he hated this movie all the way through. And it's like, I don't feel that strongly about it. Just mainly Matthew Lillard's performance. That's most of my life. I didn't look at this one up. And this is not the right podcast to do this on. But Friday night that we did do a podcast on got a 92% on the tomato meter. And it's 76% on audience score. I went to mention that earlier, and I didn't see it here. 16% of you all need to have your heads adjusted. But 13 ghosts, what was the status of that? Let me check talk amongst yourselves. Tomato meter. I did think that the ghost hunter order name was David's character. Didn't really matter. She was pretty unconscionable. She squished. I thought that her transformation into the villain was a little bit clunky..

"They're like you said, I love the room, the glass. I love everything moving. Yeah. I actually fucking like this on a lot. And I don't have a lot of negative to say about it because this is the film where I watch frightening. I was just like, damn, dude, this is like 2000 or 85. This is amazing. This blows my mind. This one I'm just like, oh, yeah, well, they should be able to do this. And it was like, yeah, and so I was more focused into the film of it and I'm like, damn, this is fucking crazy, you know? And I'm still I might not be like phenomenal, the plot's not, you know, I didn't really mean anything. It reminded me of The Simpsons episode where it's the beginning of an episode that means absolutely nothing, but it starts off the very beginning. Great and it died. You have to stay one night in a spooky house and they were like, oh, okay, so you know, you tend to be the start of the episode that go there. It's like The Simpsons walk in, they come out the next morning and they're like, oh, the bed felt great. They're tap water tasted better than ours. And then they come to the gun. Here you go. $500 per state in the will. They're like, wait, what? We just stayed here and I was like, oh, I should have mentioned that earlier. I forget that sometimes. Oh, well, and this walks away. I'm like, that's how this movie felt. It was like there was no real answer to anything but I was just like, I was still watching it. So when thrall with it, I like the film a lot. The acting, I thought was good. And regardless of the plot, but, you know, just the visual effects kept me into it. Most of the time. And I like the ghost thing. To me, it had another kind of like with the ghost. Maybe I'm wrong here, but it made me feel like you were kind of like more into the ghosts. Like not really the storyline. Kind of like cabin in the Woods. Yeah. We're about to go. Exactly. How many is that story? Yeah, it's like cabin in the Woods was kind of my thing too. It's like, wait a minute. I want to know more about the ghosts. I was like, I mean, I get this is great, but I want to know more about this. Why are we all together? Why these? I don't know. There were a few things I wish that would have done differently. They put so much detail into the ghosts and put so much detail into the makeup of the ghosts to not say anything about it for hour and a half. Yeah. So frustrating. Yes. This seemed like it should have been a Avengers style movie for the 13th movie of The Conjuring. After they've caught 13 ghosts, they finally get them all locked up and ghost jailbreak..

"I started but yeah, normally I speak from my D&D culture is they can use telekinesis that they can make objects moves or they can smash into people or make them move and still walk through objects. And they're going to be dispelled by iron or salt. Sure. Okay. Yeah, interesting. And then they said that it was the lord's prayer that was just written everywhere, which is in Latin. Yeah. Gotta be Latin. Interesting. Sure. Yeah. I also have that this is a mixture of very high powered actors like Tony Scalia booze and wings. We call him monk. Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. I mean, he's been in some high pro. He's a great actor. I think he's really good actor. He really took off, though. Oh, yeah. I guess. Yeah. F Maria Abraham, who, like you say, it was salieri and Amadeus. I didn't say it in this one, but yeah. In the previous episode, he won the Academy Award for this? No. He also played Hannibal and loaded weapon one. 5 beans and a nice chilled fresca. Holy shit he did. Yeah. He was my favorite film. We're going to watch it at some point. Was he not in last action hero also? I think he might crazy. He might have been, I think he was. He was a villain in Star Trek insurrection, too, that oh yeah. Had to have his skin stretched to stay young. And super love that one. An odd numbered. It definitely was one of the weaker star treks, but he was the bad guy. But yeah, he's an Academy Award winner. And then you have embeth David, who was in Schindler's List. It's like, you have some. Yes. She was also the teacher and Matilda, I think. And she was in some Robin Williams film, was she one of the bicentennial man? But yeah, so the recognized cast and then there's Matthew Lillard. Gee. From scream. Scooby-Doo. Also, he's a big D&D fan and he has his own website. Beetle and grims where they have supplemental materials for Dungeons and Dragons if you want to go there. Matthew Lillard is. Wow. Can we appreciate that at one point in this movie, Matthew Lillard turns the group and says, let's split up. Yeah. No, he said, did he say that was a bad idea? Yeah, he said it was about it. He was my favorite character in this. So you enjoyed it more than I did. I don't characterize. You've seen it before, and he was like, fuck it, we're screwed and he just took his pills. He was like, nah, screw it, guys. I'm going to chill here for a while. And then he had a redemption arc. Well, he did literally see his own death in his mind. And he was like, oh, that's going to happen. He's just going to get bent over a bar by the juggernaut..

"It's a bunch of oddly specific ghosts that fit a weirdly specific thing from a long time ago. They never really explained where the book comes from. Other than it was written by a guy who was possessed by the devil, something, something? Dark zodiac would be an excellent band name. I'll just put that out there. And they only know three chords. Oh yeah. Self titled album and also the name of their first single. Dark zodiac. CG and B flat. And they're mainly B flat. So the DVD extras go into a lot of depth about the actual backstory of the ghosts. Because this movie is one that's at 90 minutes on the dot, which is usually not a good sign to the quality of the movie. I don't know if you've picked up on that. But if it's exactly 90 minutes, it's usually trying to fit a specific mold. Yeah. But yeah, when they are able to expand on the ghosts, which would not make a good movie. I don't know. There's no reason for that to actually be in there. But if you care, each of those ghosts has a unique backstory and it fits into what the description is for the dark zodiac characters that they're trying to fit. Yeah. So one thing that I put was that this is a weird combination of technical mastery and then shoddy directing. It's like it is amazing like you can tell the meticulous sets that move and all these sort of incredible production. Yes. But then very awkward, clunky like editing like a lot of jump cuts of ghosts vanishing and appearing and flashing. Strobe light. Very confusingly put together. Jarring, but not in a horror movie way. Jarring in an I don't really follow the movie one? Yes. It takes you, it took me out of the movie watching it. Of how the ghost will appear and then disappear. But without any sort of coherence. Where do they go? Are they attacking me? Or are they hanging out in the basement? Just for no reason. I mean, it's like the ghosts can like push and break things. But then they can also be incorporated and share the same space as the dad, the jackal. It's like they can share the same space, but then they also cause damage. I don't get the rules of the film. Maybe that's just me. Do not do a good job of establishing the universe. They tell you at the very beginning that ghosts are real. They can absolutely kill people because of them capturing the juggernaut, obviously kills a ton of people, and that's how you come into the movie. And then they don't really expand beyond that. They don't have to go serve benevolent. They're not evil ghosts. I don't think they really touch on that at all. They just like, there's dangerous ones. And when they get out, beware. Yeah. They don't really touch on what the ghost rules are. Yeah. And I kind of gathered that watching it like it doesn't really hit that consistent note of what can be done and what can't be done. You know, again, like gremlins. This is second episode. How do you fight the ghosts? I guess there's these panels glass panels that have containment spells on them. Apparently works at some point. Yeah. Sure. Yeah. Fire. Why is the house made a glass? I don't know. Yeah. I like the beginning because it was kind of a weird shoddy, like ghostbusters..

"He was the way what's are so. That was detained. So this is the made that jump with l. Hawks the war paint jake again taking the initiative to make sure the job gets done even disobeyed orders to do that. What happened after d day. When did they wrap things up there. And where did they were the army syndrome next. Well after they recovered from the bridges they they pretty much for security around. Well no they had to take care of it. So the whole five 506 six regiment had to take any was part of that attack but they were pretty much security for regimental headquarters. So they weren't like the band of brothers actually attacking in there. They did get engaged but after that they pretty much performed security patrols things like that until he went back to england and then they did the market garden jump. And as i mentioned the demolition platoon had three bridge mission so each one of the sections was assigned to bridge now. An interesting story of that is the bombing of the bridges if you watch the movie band of brothers and win they're out there on this flank attack on this one town. I think moves whatever. His name is gets captured recovered. The scene ends with them looking at dark. And they see this bombing of eindhoven. Well that's the bombing of the bridges and jake's lieutenant yowen jake saw this mr smith fly over and drop flares. Jake recognize what was gonna happen. He was illuminating bridges for bombing. Run and jake told all his guys to get into bunkers the lieutenants telling him no gosh out here and defend the bridges and there was a tank a german tank off into the distance. Jake said no one's going to be attacking this bridges while the germs are bombing. It trust me and he goes any of you guys who don't wanna get killed your because you didn't tell them builder like anyone. Don't give getting the bunker where they all gonna bunker now the other two sections when you get it in you. Get the story in Warpaint they did. As they were trained they stayed out and the counter to strafing or bombing issue fire and hair so these guys got one grandmoms inside machine guns and they're just throwing bullets up that don't do anything and several of them. There were so many of the got killed and wounded by the bombing both. Nco's were killed. Many of the soldiers were seriously injured. That what was left of that platoon was rolled up under jake mini. Jake had the only section that was left intact. And that is when he goes from being section sergeant to the platoon sergeant. Now he's from going from buck. Sergeant his discharge. He was a staff sergey. That was a platoon sharpton day and then warmer will replace jacobs sections sergeant right. That tells you like okay. He disobeyed the order of the author. But that was the right thing to do. He saved his section. And what's left of the others. Probably made another squad and if they actually sent the officers away they distributed the officers throughout the rest of the battalion or regiment and remove the platoon shark gave him other duties. Basically the on. Jake's guy's going to keep everybody luck and that's something else. When i met rags man cohen robert coat your he. He was captured in normandy and spent the war as appear. W and it wasn't until somebody radio show tracking down and or his son tracked down any way they egos to a reunion start selling and when i talked to him about joining the filthy thirteen he said jc only when he remembered but he goes a new. That guy was little gonna live there when when you talk to these guys these world war two vets. There's always like one guy in the company that you know he's gonna make it through and he's blessed with common sense but usually gets them busted because they're smarter than most of their leaders and are tough as hell and that was jay and bob kohn said you know. Well look at jake. I'm like that guy's gonna win the metal bar okay. That's the kind of person. Jake was okay. So after operation market garden gig joined a group called pathfinders and these guys they would jump in ahead of the main airborne body to set up things like beacons to guide the rest of the planes in there were dropping off the main airborne body. Half of the filthy thirteen joined him on the head and they get dropped into the battle of the bulge and then jake ultimately he ended up with four combat jobs which is really rare for a paratrooper after the war ended. After that. what happened in jake. What what happened to jake after the war. Well by the time they get to occupation in Zella switzerland day get discharged on points and they go home now. District ego points and talk kick miller career soldier stuff that wounded enormity. He had a lot of points so they sent him home. And the company commander who jane brown at that time picks jake db the acting i art. So here's this guy who they will jay brown funny story in the book about when they're in the new york port of embarkation and jake astill a private not even private kurds plan and they tell him you got to promote this dining says jake already a downtown drinking and andy brown says they can send me to leavenworth the prison but before i ever promote skied a private g brown end up promoting this guy all the way to i charge of gay acting. I charge is discharge listed him as staff target which was the rank of platoon charging after the war. He travels around raises. Hell and stuff like that till he moved back to. Ponca city falls in love with a good hispanic woman and she knows his troubled background. And jake says look he said. My problem is drinking. And if i get and fight when i'm not drinking and so he says i give that up and give it well. So here's jay. He's given up drinking a lay. Preacher now I did lit world. War two lifts history at what of the guys had just read the book and he says is it true. This hellraiser became a lay preacher. I said yeah. Was it. So i told jake that he says take had had a comeback. He his real calling should have been a standup comic. It goes yeah. He said next time you're asked that question. He said tell them this. I spent the first thirty five years of my life so in wild oats and the rest of my life praying for a crop failure classic. Jake yeah yeah leads. That's that summed up his life right there. So what do you hope. People walk away with thinking after they. They finish your books about the filthy thirteen. And jacob niece well several things first of all. Take it as a entertaining story. Okay now if you're caught up in discipline and stuff read between the lines. Why do they not kick this guy out. Why do they keep promoting him. Why is he made the first ardent. Of the pathfinder wisey made acting first sergeant regimental headquarters company because he's a leader. The only thing he had problem was was saluting and staining formations in his mind. He's looking like if this doesn't contribute to my training for the war it doesn't make sense but he also is going to the limit any did and he got away with it because they were trying to rationalize with murray for all those people's at ida kicked him out we have lost the war. Okay i was a company commander. I'd had a hard time out. You know as much as i'd gate hard time protecting that guy. We got along. He you know he would have probably obeyed. What i'd only do anyway because i would have been rational with him like in canada but he would definitely as teams are Affords because there was guys like.

"Richard killing. Welcome to the show. Okay thanks for having me on. So you've written a few books about a world war two call a squad part of the one. Oh one The called the filthy thirteen became to be known as that for big picture. Get into the story. It's really remarkable. Who were the filthy thirteen like. What was their objective and mission during world war two and then how did you discover the story of the these guys well. The filthy thirteen was actually a demolition section. There was three demolition sections in the demolition platoon of the regimental headquarters company of the five. Oh six bear chewed infantry regiment. Which the band of brothers was easy company. 506 inside one hundred first airborne vision and jake macneice was appointed as the section sergeant. Okay in a section included to six men spots and so that's thirteen guys and their mission but primary mission is anything that has to do with blowing stuff up. Okay that would be like a bridge mission or whatever but in the event that they don't have a demolition mission. They were pretty much security around the regimental headquarters. Colonels inc's headquarters okay and so. There were two bridge missions during the world war. Two that the five. Oh six had responsibility for the first one was at the bridget. Revenge over the dove canal just outside it cuts off the any retreat or attack from carrington and the other one was the market guard. And and how. How i came to know about these guys. Well actually i. I heard about the filthy thirteen. While i was in special forces in the army and it was a friend that told me about it and i just plug it in the back of my mind until galileo army and i moved back home though funk city oklahoma and lo and behold the leader that unit lived his by mail so i got to know it. All right He was just a prolific storyteller. All right so. Let's talk about jake. He's like the main character of this first book. He became known as mcnasty and during his time with the filthy thirteen before he joined up. Volunteered as a paratrooper. what was he like as a kid. I mean did you see glimpses of the the man who would become known as mcnasty in a teenage. Jake macneice yeah okay. The teenage years is where. I would say i started before that is parents were sharecroppers and actually successful share we tend to think of sharecroppers poor no his father was doing very well had bought a house when the depression yet in any law of course they lost everything and the kids had to go to work so jake had to grow up fast and young all right so all. The kids worked until they pretty much graduated from high school. He had two older brothers. I think went in to college so jay when he was in a jake was a superb athlete. If when you you look at the book warpaint. I've got pictures of him. Stripped down to just the short going through the obstacle course. The guy is solid muscle. And when i saw his i read his discharge. He weighed one. Hundred seventy five pounds. And i think-i stood five seven a solid muscle. There's no fat guys cop so but a tremendous athlete both wrestling and football. And i guess he had played A little bit familiar gotten to the ninth grade. And he's he's going to drop out of school so he can work full time to support the family and oklahoma back in and there's a few places now high school. Football is semi pro. Gay and hongkou. Stadium it's rivaled town blackwell both in the same county. They had professional football. The because they the coaches went out to these smaller towns and recruited athletes either offering the athlete a job or offering their parents a job and a and say blackwell ponca city because blackwell had a I think a still refinery steel mill and ponca city had continental oil company. And so the coach said look. We'll get you job with the fire department said you play full-time annual work at the fire department. Pretty much lived there and when he joined the fire department. It's like the majority of the fire department were high school football players so anyway very responsible and but tough he a fighter as serious scrapper but when i got to know people he was admired folks i think they. They elected him as high school. His senior class president he went he went to school. Wherein like Which hall coveralls or like a bib coveralls and So everybody else started wearing a church know aside from his drinking and fighting and fooling around with loose women he admired because no 'cause when it got back from the war any gives that up and he becomes a born again christian. A lot of people said he changed. And from everything. I was here and i said no there was no change. Said once you strip those three vices from him you got down to the real jake macneice. He's really a good guy he did. The fights got in with bullies with people are starting fights with him but he would defend other people but the story that when i ate the narration actually minor asian which leads into jake story begins with a football game in which it's they're playing for blooded it blackwell had beat them the last time so this is a rival regain army navy. There's they're zero. Score and jake is a problem solver. And i love that story. Every everybody from who was in high school remembers that one play and jake is because he's the team captain but he's alignment and he's just remember. I've seven at that time. He probably was awaiting hundred seventy five pounds. But the.

"Days and we've only had to take shelter once twice for me and said but i've been here almost three weeks. I'm not scared. Sasha assured them. I'm just curious you should be scared. Susannah said its hooks. It wasn't a long ride and sasha was embarrassed at how long it took her to realize the destination. This was the same route they'd taken from. The house of. Miriam just in reverse. She and the other girls were being taken downtown. Once she got a good look at the gallows she understood. Why there were six people lined up in front of the little stairway that led to the platform. They looked like prisoners. Susannah looked just as confused as sasha but an seem to understand what was going on. She scrunched her face in disgust. Oh no she said. I hate it when they make us watch this the two martyrs who guarded them all day opened the doors and told them to form up outside of the bus. Sasha did as she was told while grabbing as many long looks at the gallows as she could manage. None of the people who stood out in front of the platform looked like soldiers or robber barons or much of anything at all. they just seemed young and scared fags. The martyr standing next to the driver at the bus door grunted. His sasha's stepped past him he waited until the other girls at all filed off the bus before he stepped around to stand in front of them. Sasha hadn't paid the man too much attention during the day because in truth he scared her. He looked old over forty. At least in his face was heavy. With scars and tattoos there were faded. Blue crosses inked on each of his forearms. There wasn't much skin visible under his armor and helmet but the skin she could see was tanned read like leather. His eyes were cold and seemed fixed into a permanent squint. When he addressed the group was with a voice that sounded like it came to them through a filter of gravel glass these people he said and spat after the word people gender traitors there were a few gasps from among the crowd he continued. It took us a while to crack into the republic's old files. But we finally got a list of all the fags who refused to accept their god given gender. They thought surgery could had them. But there's no hiding the truth from the is a god or his true servants and there's only one fair punishment for similarly turns their back on natural law sasha's heart started to pound she'd known of course that passer mike approve of transgenderism of gender change surgery of homosexuality or anything else that didn't fit into the neat biblical lines of what a man and a woman ought to be. But it always phrased his objections with such compassion. Queer and trans people weren't monsters deserving of death. They were victims of the fallen secular world. Same as anyone else. Sasha agreed they needed reeducation but this the crowd. Perhaps three hundred strong cheered as the prisoners were led up to the gallows sasha's heart like a bass drum she couldn't hear anything else. The voices of the crowd of her sisters faded behind the beating sound of the blood. That course through your head but her is continued to work and she watched in horror as they fit nooses around each victim's neck the young people cried and screamed at begged but the martyr's paid them. No mind some of them chanted in tongues will be prepared the killing machine. Sasha saw choi in there is she founded revolting before long. They'd finished their preparations in six. People were strung up on the gallows before the brazen cries of the crowd. Sasha didn't think it was possible for her to beat any faster but it kept speeding up. She felt lightheaded and nauseous and a little like she needed to go to the bathroom. Her knees grew weak and she found herself leaning on an the other woman looked almost scared. A sasha did but she weathered it better. She put an arm around sasha supporting her and the two of them looked on as the executioner called out nipple the lever that sent six human beings. Dropping down to dangle until they were dead the snap of their next was the only thing. Sasha heard above the sound of her own pounding heart. She watched them twitch and jerk for a second to and then her body grew to light and her legs collapsed beneath her. The world went black. She awoke back in the house of. Miriam her sister's melter. Stood around her. Sasha was gratified to see. She wasn't the only one who passed out and lane next to her clearly disoriented along with two other women whose name sasha hadn't quite memorized helen's set in between them wet wash cloth in her hand and stroke their faces. They're they're deers. You've had a terrible shock and there's no shame in your reactions. No shame may spat the words. There was a glow to her face in a manic. Glint in her is ma'am with all due respect. I don't know how these girls can call themselves. Committed to the heavenly kingdom if the site of divine justice hurts them so much. Sasha anger and helen's is but the older woman didn't let it carry over into her voice instead she fixed may with a cool gays and said in an even tone. Miss may one can believe in our lord's justice in still regret the pain that comes with it that does not signal a lack of devotion it signals compassion a trait jesus christ had an abundance may frowned and pursed her lips. But she kept them shut for now. Helen turn back to sasha and the other girls who had fallen death is never easy to witness girls. It should be a horrible thing to witness. She glanced back to may and we should all be worried if a day ever comes when we can see such violence without pain in our hearts but these are dire times the world has fallen too much for pacifism to bring back the rule of god and so we must use violence. Do you understand. Sasha nodded. She heard the other girls give stuttering hollow replies. Even the girls who manage to stay standing looked shaken may was the only one who wore a smile. They gave her a wide berth. The rest of the day whoever was in charge of their schedule paid some deference to the fact that they've been forced to watch an execution there was no more cleaning that day. This spent the rest of the daylight. Our seated around the common area in the house of miriam sewing uniforms. Sasha had never sewn before but an sat next to her and taught her the basics her hands were still shaking when they got to work but an helped her and eventually focusing on the meticulous task allowed her to blot out the horror once she got a good grip on the basics of what was required of her she was able to lose yourself and quiet productive flow. She was almost disappointed. When helen kulgam to dinner they ate the same food as the day before they prayed in then they had an hour of relatively free time. They couldn't leave the house of miriam since it was after eight but they could talk. Sasha gravitated naturally to suzanne an an the topic of conversation turned at once to the execution. Is that always what it's like. Susanna asked in nodded. Her voice shook a little when she said i passed out last time too. I thought it'd be easier the second time around but it really wasn't. It feels wrong. Sasha whispered she glanced over to may who was holding court with a few of the other girls at the other end of the common area. I'm not saying it's okay what those people were doing. But surely they deserve a chance to repent susannah nodded. I don't think jesus would want to murder people just for being wrong. It's one thing to kill an atheist or an apostate who's attacking you. it's another thing to just. Her voice caught a bit hang people and shook her head in an absence. Sort of way. Kyle told me it was necessary kyle. Susannah asked my intended and said i watched the first execution with him. When i passed out he was so sweet..

Is this on the front and the back it says the back on my doorstep. It's from so the address. Up top left says nails emporium from nails with a little apostrophe real by the way nails lofgren exit thirteen off route. Nine attleboro okay. So first of all first of all route nine's nowhere near attleboro. Explain the nails lock you. Just try to write something really. New england sales lofton is the half brother of nils lofgren. Supposedly we haven't confirmed that we've had the podcast. Great musicians work with neil. Extensive does a great job on nails. Lofgren does man owns nails emporium. He sells nothing but nails to. Yeah when we were trying to reach nils. I do love these Apostrophes he put so. He put a tiny little in classic. Neil young style. Neil loves a fucking he does. He does nails. Oh okay. there's one in front of nails and one after emporium. Okay and then the long may you young. He also does that as well. Yeah but says it's overseeing no stamp either so he. He plays the wheel. Says the moore says the boys of long may young one. Nine it okay. We don't even say my actual address you can edit that then on the back it says it says open sorry only open when all the boys are together. And then it says spaced. Out with dash is an a. l. s. nails. Well that's his. That's his slogan to our very first sponsor alaskan hook now. my god. what is that really is awesome often. Oh my god this is i'm wearing. I'm never egging it all. Wait a minute wait. Hold on l. A. l. s. Emporium if you can't mail and we sure can and there's are their nails in there. Oh look does this one's These are their alaskan hooked nails in their nails. Look like hooks. But that's fucking amazing that also and it's a graphic of nails himself on a ladder. It looks like a ladder that he may have made himself. He probably took the class ladders at greenvale community. Calm and then he and he's nailing a nail in the wall but he's looks like he's hitting it with an axe. It looks like an access probably hammer. I'm saying it's it's probably a hammer thing on the court at the bottom corner. Say it says if if you can't nail it we sure can surgeon. Well thanks again to because thanks now. Shirts are fucking sweet shirt. So i posted. The album covers a couple of hours ago and we got a couple responses by live nails best so funny But i just posted Both unplugged and lucky. Thirteen thousand says unplugged. Came out just as i was getting into neil iconic and then herwig replied to that an unplugged came out just as i was losing faith in my rock hero so well it took him to unplugged so he didn't regain faith like ragged glory unless he missed those harvard. Maybe he just stepped away for rail until because i am onto. Mtv or something. Mtv was playing a couple of videos from unplug heavy rotation like a hurricane harvest moon was up there. And i remember when that album came out. It was working at a a aaa station in richmond and we were playing at a ton playing mr soul and and string man and stuff like that. So wow yeah interesting. I got a couple of things on social media. Actually got something from the Long they use young podcast dot com Contact page from chris hawley. Who says You guys are the best. Each one of you offer something necessary to what a frigging awesome. Podcast you have I look forward to every show. I'm always laughing. I'm totally enjoying town. Meeting to lastly neal is my true hero number one on a little bit here on a little bit. They're a little bit scattered everywhere. Nick ender holy from issaquah washington. Nice thanks nick. Thinks he's posted a couple of reviews and he's a couple of things on facebook before. But i think he's the guy that always throws a neil quote at the end which i really like and it's usually one that's pretty obscure and i never get right away so well thank you for listening in washington and you can also contact us through long. May you young podcasts. Dot com from the neil young sub. Reddit this is from walk. Like a giant and he's talking about harvest moon This album was my entry point to neil. I recall a lot of quote this is a sequel to harvest. Talk back then too and you guys did a good job explaining why it really is and why it isn't a sequel at the same time russ isn't wrong about be k. Either told you the man had the golden touch and was perfect complement to kneel and oh boy. Your breakdown of dream and man had me howling with laughter. That's right. that's where neil basically confesses that easy. Tom time traveling vampire creep with an arrow star van at scoping out a young girl in a mall and waiting for her to come out. Think someone else said something about Walk legs giants at his top. Three harvest moon is number three harvest moon number two unknown legend number. One one of these days. Those need those the same as me. I think was that was one of these days. You're number one. That was year number will know it was mine. One of his was hank to hendrick. And listening to in little spoiler after listening to fucking unplugged and ending with hendrix man. I was crying. I was like goddamn. I kind of wish. I switched out harvest great song and it's a really hang hendrix. There's a lotta great versions on unplugged Yeah but i mean but hanged hendrix to me especially. It's like the end. It's just a really nice wrap up and it's just so pretty. It's such a good song man. like i. i put harvest moon on my top three. I think my top three was harvest moon as three two unknown legend and one was one of these days which i think was exactly what you just read was your review and But now after listening. I'm almost like with you. I almost feel like i should have put hendrix too. So his his fans yeah. I know we'll get the people he's worked with. We'll get both. But i mean if you had to pick unplugged or lucky. Thirteen as the better album go unplugged. Yeah yeah definitely mike. Yeah no i would go on plug because lucky thirteen still has shitty studio album version stuff from old ways on it if it was all unreleased or remixed or whatever stuff then i would. Maybe leaned lucky thirteen. Yeah but it's still only half of that you know but the that's unreleased or remixed as is excellent now. I like lucky thirteen. But i would still go unplugged mostly just because i just love hearing neil on his own and then his harmonica playing is just so so let me let me just the way he does some of the. I mean you've said before mr soul and some of those songs delays so let me. Let me ask you this. Because i was thinking about this earlier today. The in your opinion the best song awful lucky thirteen verse. The best song off of unplugged would would which would win in that. And you know what i what i know i was just going to i. I'd have i didn't even do top three. Yeah but i will by the end of.
