'Believing Is Seeing' Author Michael Guillen on How Science Led Him to God

"Science. It's nothing less than astonishing. When you realize that the idea, most of us have heard in our lifetimes that faith and science are at odds, is not even slightly true. It is in fact the opposite. It's hard for us to shift our paradigms. But we need to, as I said, I write about it a lot in my new book. But a friend Michael gillan, we've had him on before, has a new book out on the very same subject called believing is seeing. He's a real scientist. Michael gill and welcome. Hey, Eric, it's so good to see you again, my brother. Looking forward to our conversation. It's great. It's great to see you and to talk to you. I love talking about all this stuff, especially with somebody who knows about it the way you do. You really came to faith later in life. You had been hostile to faith. And now you're writing books, explaining to people that faith and science are friends and that this is a lie that they're at odds. In the book you talk about how the latest discoveries in neuroscience physics astronomy, mathematics. Point to faith in many ways. Talk about that because I mean, what do you mean when you say neuroscience? I'm not even sure, do I know what neuroscience is? Signs of the brain. Yeah, yeah. It's a study of the brain and, you know, I remember when I was at ABC News, I did a story on the Harvard brain bank, which is the largest repository of human brains. I think in the world, certainly in the nation. So I went there. It's Ian Massachusetts, not too far from Harvard. I was also teaching at Harvard at the time, so it was convenient for me. And I remember being able to hold, they allowed me to hold a human brain in my hands. And even to this day, Eric, it was just a really weird feeling to think, you know, this is the essence of what we call humanity, if you will. Never mind discussions about soul and the spirit. I mean, this is where our personalities. This is where we reside in this two, three pound brain. And the human brain is made up of two hemispheres, the right and the left. And a lot of studies have been done on that. And I talk in the book about I think it was in the 70s when scientists physicians started treating patients with epilepsy by severing the corpus callosum, which is the cable like it's a very thick cable of nerve fibers that connect the two hemispheres. And what they found was that when they, when they cut the two hemispheres, when they separated the two hemispheres like that, the epileptic seizures stopped. Not entirely but to a great degree. But there were some interesting side effects. And that's what I deal with in the book because ultimately I connect that research to my exploration of faith. It's a little bit complicated and we couldn't do it justice here, but I will say this much that when you when you look at these what we call split brain patients, these are patients whose hemispheres have been separated. They there's a lot of interesting side effects. For example, why quote one woman who goes grocery shopping, she's a split brain patient. And she finds that the two hands when she's reaching for groceries or putting groceries in the basket, they fight one another. And what I explain in the book is that what we've discovered from split brain patients is that our two hemispheres are basically at war with one

But what interests me is a study done by the national confectioners association, the people who oversee the candy industry, talking about Halloween candy. Number one choice for giving away Halloween candy. We're not talking brand here. We're talking type of candy. It's chocolate. 60% of people give away chocolate like to get chocolate. 40%, gummy candy, and candy corn. They didn't just say other, they said gummy candy second candy corn third. Now what I don't have is an exact breakdown of what percentage of people give it away like to give it away like to get it in return, but it's not as hated as many people would like you to think. Bubble gum doesn't show up and I'll be honest with you as a kid, you never wanted to get bubble gum. You always like chocolate. You like the full size candy bars, but I'll tell you what, even if I was getting a small little pack of candy corn or even gummy bears back when they first started out, I didn't mind. "Schwartz, the rookie third round pick out of Auburn, with his first NFL reception takes him down to the 22 year. Hard line. A 16 yard. First down, pick up for the brown. That's great throw by Baker Mayfield. He wrote to his left, and it looked like you know, you said Landry was going to his left. That's kind of where the chief's defense went, and he threw across the field. To find Schwartz for his first catch. That was up another big time throw by Baker and this drive with good speed out to the left down was converted three first downs in this opening. Dr Mayfield other center takes the snap. Give it a shove looking room on the left, strung out and dragged down by Mike Danna should be that was Girls moving was that boat out there was excuse me for a loss of a yard just talked about Bolton, and he made a terrific open field tackle. That time. He's got tremendous speed. He's not a big guy. He's only six ft. Tall about £230, but he's got great speed that That was Cleveland's signature play. They're running power to left, They pulled the right guard, White teller and normally they have a lot of success from that play Bolton ready and then he penetrated to make the tackle in the backfield clock down at 10 16 to go the first quarter rounds in their opening possession had it since the opening kickoff. They started their own 25 a field takes the snap on 2nd 11. Stating the pocket now forced to run to his right being chased by Bolton throws on the run toward the end zone over the head of in joke Ooh, and it lands in completed the back of the end zone. Joke who had a step punch of arias Ward Mayfield. Just overthrow Scramble drill. So, Baker. You know, the clock is in his head. The imaginary clock went off. He rolled to his right. And joker went deep, like on a scramble drill like you like to. I thought it was pretty good coverage on the plate. Take a perfect throw to complete that crowds facing a 3rd and 11. On their 23 of Kansas City faced just one third down on this drive. They convert it to the left of Mayfield was out of the gun, four down linemen. They're all coming may feel back to throw looking back to his right throws and a sliding grab is made at the 15 yard line by Hooper. But short of the first down, it's an eight yard pickup. Well, Jerry Sneed had the coverage. They're going to be about three yards short of the first down. They're not putting the field goal team on. They know when they play the Kansas City Chiefs when you're going up against patch from the homes, you need touchdowns and field goals. First big decision of the season for Kevin Stefanski on fourth and every bit of three yards to go for this situation. 11th player this drive 1/4 down and three after 15 of Kansas City. Mayfield in the shotgun with an empty backfield takes this Snap. Looking left fires a slant. It's caught a low sliding grant for a first down at the 10 Yard line Reception made by Austin Hooper. His third reception of this drive goes for five yards, and they convert a first and goal coming up here for Cleveland. They've had since the opening kickoff there down under nine minutes to go down in the first quarter. Well, that was.

"Mobile dot com and josh kind of mentioned it a couple of times here but the dolphins are finishing up their padded practices before they prepared to take a trip to chicago. Do a couple of practices with the bears and those are going to be exciting to say the least But with monday and tuesday. I believe both of them. Being off days this sunday practice is going to be the last little bit of information we receive until the dolphins make bad trip. So some of the more notable things we have to go back to the wide receivers because that seems to be the tightest most appealing competition. The dolphins have going. I and isaiah ford kirk mare and duquesne grant. Were all catching passes from two. On sunday josh. I think that's maybe the most frustrating thing about some unlike devante parker not being on the field. Someone like willful or not being on the field is not knowing exactly where these guys lined up the depth chart. Because i want to start with this josh. Do you think that devante parker and press or preston williams would either them not be in the starting lineup If opening day was next week. That's a good question. I mean i think press the williams would probably find that uphill battle. But i think you're right devante parker he would absolutely be you know solidified in there. Is that starting receiver but jake to your point. I mean does this. Not just i don't know about you. I'm trying not to fall into the same isaiah ford trap and education grant chat so every year. Because i mean i was i was one i liked isaiah ford in college and you know every time. He's cut brought back for gang gang. Whatever but he's out there making plays and again. We talked about that number twenty jersey. But how much this is. Just camp collins go up sky over top of byron jones. I don't know if you saw that ended it with a dunk. So i mean these are the type of things that i hope it's good to see and camper. It's bad you know. Mccown sky over byron jones. Your huge free agent acquisition. I mean i don't know jake but it's again iron sharpens iron. I guess yeah and you have to wonder. We haven't heard the elder wilson hypoc course. It could just be a couple days in these players working with jacoby presented the second team But i mean even foster wilson hearns. 'bout in junior these are guys. We haven't heard a lot about albert. Excuse me fuller was standing out there today. In sunday's practice. According to bear jackson of the miami herald he didn't have a sleeve or cast or anything covering his legs. So that suggested nothing serious and then moving on elder wilson was out of uniform on sunday with a compression sleeve on his leg but observing and not limping again. From barry jackson and devante parker was in red non contact jersey. So i don't really know what to make of this receiving core rate now josh. Because i don't know if kirk merit is really going to be someone who is going to be pushing for these roster spots despite you know here. We are on august eighth. And he's practicing with the. I don't know how much this is just again. The dolphins being extra cautious again. They're traveling they're basically going to have a scrimmage no these next two practices with the bears and then they go into that preseason games they don't know how much of this is just sitting some your starters but you mentioned we'll fall in the ceylon jake and he was at big signing this all season a lot of dolphin fans had high hopes for him. You don't really want to see that but then next to him was also jalen phillips. So i i kinda wanna talk about this jake like those were to play playmakers. They brought in not only on offense and then defense that they expected. You know to go out there and be able to make plays immediately. This team obviously not will fuller given his suspension but when he was brought in you know they signed him to that contract he was brought in to be opposite of devante. Parker bring that added element brunette speed. So when you see a player a first round pick like jalen phillips. I gotta dolphins drafted. We can get into what that means. They could've went najah hairs. They could want a whole different route there but the that he's on a silent on silent does that give you any reason to be concerned heading into the first week of preseason. I'm gonna go ahead and say i don't think it does josh. It's a slow process. I mean we're going to go back to the thing where we're talking about the madden rosters. Right if you were to launch mad today on opening day and compare that to the first day of the regular season i mean the roster is night and day how different they may look despite. You're not playing it one regular season game and you know willful is not even gonna be there for that first game. I think jalen phillips is someone you want to see him play short-term sure you wanna see him out there in practice. Be you know that guy that we read all the tweets about right. That's kind of why. The dolphins drafted this guy. He was the tweet guy you know at this workout. He looked incredible. Yada yada yada that type of stuff and you know. I'm definitely devaluing. How good he is a player because he's a very talented athlete here. But i think it's okay to be a little slower with these guys. I think we will see phillips out there come the second and third preseason games but we have to keep in mind to josh. It's a little bit of a different approach this year with there only being three preseason games. Yeah i completely agree with you. Jake and i think that's kind of the whole point. I was trying to get at. But you know i guess if it gets in preseason week two and three then we can start to get a little concern. Just read off a couple more of the tweets. You have here. I mean if if you guys are not falling travis. Wingfield the miami dolphins. You know i want to say he's their beat writer right wingfield. Nfl follow him. Because i mean he is literally giving you play by play analysis of training camp and again a lot of us join twitter for this very reason but he has to a double clutched on a quick slant fires row gets a hand on scheme grant catches affliction with one hand. We heard some of the other big plays going on at camp today. I believe jalen wall. You know everyone's saying what's up with a limp because you know you keep hearing. He's limping around. He's going out there. Making explosive plays but jake the biggest news that we had today in something that i don't even think we talked about yet but hunter along the miami dolphins rookie tight end was carved off the field. Today i know we talked about what that meant Drafting him what that meant. Maybe for the future of mike is sticky. But now when you look at that tight end unit when you saw it. It was a lot stronger than it was year ago. Losing hunter is a pretty big blown. It did sound like a serious injury. Unfortunately for the rookie tight end yet josh. One hundred percent rate in the car is usually the The you know the that's kind of a sign that he's gonna miss a lot of time but josh training camp. Maybe they're being safe. Maybe there's an opportunity he can come back and it's more of a scared or anything else but we can't really get an idea on that. I'm sure we'll talk about it after practice. Josh you have to think though that tight end was a big part of miami's game plan. And i don't think that's going to change too much going into the season. A tool has been connecting with durham. Smyth and adam shaheen a lot especially this weekend And we'll see seki start to get more involved as we start to get closer and closer again to opening week but josh i think you know hunter long with someone who i thought was going to have an interesting for the dolphins..

But he but i have to say he's my eldest son because i have a daughter and then two sons and he's turning ten and it's crazy because i always remembered with his birthday. That was my last day in what was supposed to be my life long career i took i had spent ten years for those of you know i'll share a little bit about myself. I actually i have a degree in physics and a minor in mathematics and also that i have a certificate for secondary education. Along with that is is what i went to college for and i loved physics. I love math. And they'll reason. I switched from math. Physics at the last minute before went to college is because physics was math with a purpose. So that was it. I still really love numbers as you can tell with the staff geeky but I wanted to go into teaching as much. Because i wanted to be coach. That's what i wanted to do. I wanted to coach. So i got a job right out of college and i was began teaching and coaching. I coached high school football and indoor and outdoor track. I did that for seven years and when my daughter was born what my last semester. I wasn't coaching. High school actually coached at the local college but when my daughter was born i took a leave of absence from coaching because she was born right before football season started and therefore i knew that i just wasn't. Luckily she was born early a little bit and would she have been born late. It would have been already when practices started so i took a year off from coaching. And then that ended up being two and then three and then when my son was born actually took a leave of absence from teaching and a semester turned into a year turned into to turn into three and now turned into ten which allows me to do behind the curtain. So happy birthday gabriel. I'm glad that i had a chance to To to to take my turn after my wife took a turn we were. And then i won the flip for the third child Of of of spending time with him when he was born and it turned into this which is fantastic. So now out here. I am talking to you all on a thursday morning. You're like that's enough dave. Let's talk steelers. Yes here's what's crazy. I'm reminiscent we're gonna be reminiscent even more. Because what we're gonna be talking about today is kendra green kendrick green. But we're not gonna be talking about kindergarten. We're gonna be talking about what kendrick bourne could be. Katie green is my choice to win the job. Day one of the twenty twenty one regular season in other words week. One starter at center for the steelers. I just think that he's the best option. I know a lot of people would be any. Bj finney is a backup. That's what he was with the steelers and when he left the steelers struggled to even be that anywhere else so to come in and think he's going to be an answer as a starter. I think putting too much on him. I like bj finney. I think he's a great person. I like him in the role that he's in. I just don't know that he's the guy that you want to turn to totally if he's got start for awhile until green is ready. That's what it needs to be. But it's not like i think. Bj fini's the long-term answer at the position. where i think kinder- green is so you're like well. What are you talking. so much about. Kinder- green kindergarten was the steelers third round. Pick this year. And i went to do an article this weekend. This didn't come from a question from a user. This came from a question that i ended up posing myself. I went to write an article this weekend as much as i started diving into it. Either send a message to jeff. And i'm like this article coming later. This has got to be static this week. This is absolutely crazy. What i found. I was just looking for a simple answer and it was not a simple answer. And you're you're gonna love this. My simple question. That i had thought was a simple answer was okay kendrick. Green third round pick. What if he starts week one and then starts week two and starts the whole season. Who was the last third round. Pick to do that for the steelers. Wow you want to talk about having the dive deep the depth this had to go. I started with twenty. Twenty and i was working backwards. Came and lets you see how it worked out. You probably already have in your mind. Oh it might have been so and so it could have been so and so. Let's get this answer. So twenty. Twenty alex smith week one. He wasn't a starter he didn't start until week. Twelve after by depre- got hurt. He played ten snaps his first game. He had one tackle. So that's what i'm looking at. You know how many snaps you played in week one. What kind of stats did you have. When did you really become a starter. That was alex meant the year. Before was the andre johnson. He played twenty four snaps which was thirty six percent of the offensive snaps for the steelers and he had three catches for twenty five yards. But he didn't actually get a what would be called a start until week three but he played all the time. So you like okay. We're getting there. But he didn't really play a significant portion of the snaps until much later in the season the other two thousand nine hundred third round pick justin lane. He didn't play a single defensive snaps his rookie year and he's yet to become starter. So that's just that was what was. He wasn't even active for week. One you're gonna find this being a theme if you go to two thousand eighteen. There was two third round picks there as well mason. Rudolph inactive wasn't act of the entire season. He didn't start until year two and he wouldn't even started at. It's ben roethlisberger got hurt then. The other third round pick was ju- core for he played seventeen snaps which was twenty percent of the steelers offensive snaps in week. One he didn't have any stats. He was offensive linemen and he technically started week. One that's correct chook. Sikora for started week one of his rookie year. You're like why only played twenty percent of the snaps. He was the jumbo tight end and the steelers opened their season.

Rudolph andre johnson Gabriel twenty percent gabriel ten years seven years kendrick bourne thirty six percent twenty five yards bj finney today twenty four snaps seventeen snaps thursday morning ten snaps Sikora first game jeff three

"Peyton's Broncos is joining us from an undisclosed location in a state of the state. I used to live in S O. I was talking to Eric Mangini last hour and I said I can't even imagine being Joe Burro. I get no ta. I get no preseason. I'm in the brutal division. Go back. Christie, your rookie year you get drafted, second or third round, I think. Can you imagine not having a preseason and playing week one No, I can't. I really can't. Because this is a rookie in the NFL. You know, Of course, I was in the offense. That was maybe more complicated than others and Jon Gruden's. It's pretty famous for his Burbage and things like that. But it was such a world win, as is for me, and I had a normal offseason with a team that had just come off winning the Super Bowl, too. Where you know, it just was so much to digest a new place to live Man, a new offense, a new language, new teammates, everything like that. I can't imagine being in their shoes, especially in this year. This type of situation just getting to know guys on your team, you know, just get into throw two receivers and feel their body language and things like that for the first time. It's Yeah, it's going to be an unbelievable feat. For a guy like Joe Burrow are expected to see Start right away will see where two Agos, but I'll say this about these to Colin. These two came from, at least they haven't They haven't advantage where they came from Two pro style programs. Me Joe Girl he learned from Joe Brady, who learned from Sean Payton and Joe Brady's up there with the Carolina Panthers is an offensive coordinator. So at least he knows what offensive system and offensive football is all about. And Zach Taylor, the head coach of the Bangles, he comes from that West Coast system with Sean McVeigh. A lot of that Burbage is very similar to that Sean Payton, sister. Come to, so that will be an easier transition for him to, uh he's been coached, like a pros, You know, aswell, but he doesn't get the benefit of being in that same system. He was in college now has always been a saying You can't learn anything sitting on the sidelines. But when your your rookie year how much can you learn if you're too old for seven or eight weeks? I mean, what? What do you pick up on the sidelines that a fan wouldn't understand. Well, I think the big thing is you just getting used to the speed of the game. You get to see how the other guy approaches the You know the game on a weekly basis play by play, you know, you start to get into the nuances of you know the coach telling you Hey, when I call this play on second and seven You know, this is what I'm thinking. So he gets the slowly learned all that stuff and understand how to manage a game and situations that the type of throws that are necessary. You know, with a certain play that you know he'll file way in the back of his brain, A CZ he watches Ryan Fitzpatrick and everything like that. Now I am from the camp of I'm always in favor of putting the guy out to play. I am. I am one of those guys. It's a little different this year, so I understand it. But, you know, quarterback is one of those things Colin that I always say. It's about the hardest position in all of sports. The practice, you know? Yeah, it's great to go out there and practice. But it's you know, you're not going to get hit. There's no play cop. There's no crowd noise, all those things so I always found the best preparation was to get out there. Get in the live bullets. Have people wanting to rip my head off. Have the fans telling me I stink and born me and yelling at me. That was ultimately the best wraps. You could get to get better, and that's what would be my two cents as Faras any coach trying to start a young quarterback, you know you're in AA The Beast of the belly in New York. The New York Giants have Joe judge no experience. I think it's really tough to ask a young Daniel Jones and a rookie head coach and Jason Garrett. Hey, no preseason go. I really think this could work, but I think it's brutal. That's why I'm not going to be really judgmental on Jo Bro this year. Really not judgmental on Joe Judge. It's just different. Let's forget about Thanksgiving and see if they're making progress. And if they are, I'm good. Jo Judge got some heat is making coach's run. He's making players run like high school. Everybody's banging on him. You're you're back there, you know, in in New York area, How is it playing? How is the Joe judge playing making coaches and players run laps? It's not bad here. I think people are a little worried that you know the team could revolt a little bit just a degree, because you know Joe judges, a guy who wasn't coached in the NFL and hasn't one ball games and you have Bill Belichick and get away with doing that. But Joe judge, you haven't done that or have enough success to stand on to be able to sell that to the players. But he shouldn't have Tio you No one. He should be. Well, the place I came from, You know, we've only dominated football for the last 20 years and football and it does work. But you know, he can come off as like that evil dictator, Right? Like every time you do something wrong on the mean guy and screw up and you guys go run. You know, there's a certain balance of that. And I think, Joe Judge I worked with them and doing good. You know, I know him a little bit. He's got a great way to communicate and people skills and knows how to relay players. I mean, you can kind intelligence by these clips. You're showing on the show right now that he knows how to get around. Bill Belichick is a little bit more of a player shut coach than people realize. Um, So this is the New England way and I think he's trying to show everybody like, hey, some of these mistakes that had gone on during practice the last four or five years here in New York. They're just not acceptable..

Joe judge New York Sean Payton Joe Brady Joe Burro Burbage Joe Burrow NFL Bill Belichick Colin Joe Girl Eric Mangini Joe Jo Judge Jon Gruden New York Giants Broncos Peyton Christie Ryan Fitzpatrick

"It's Vinnie. It's Adam Curtis and then Maye and we're doing here you're to a point overs in of the Vegas Nation. Mock draft taking care of all the raiders picks here as we go along in the show right. Now we're up to the third round. Where the Raiders? Actually still have three picks they have it pick eighty pig eighty one and pick ninety one. So let's head over here to the Raiders War Room which is on zoom conference or skype or something of that nature in their virtual war room. We're going to head over to add an atom and find out what they're doing here with pick number eighty in round three raiders. You are on the clock Johnny. We've now got up pick eighty and did you just hear what Mel Kiper Junior said about our last big? I LIKE BILL. Tobin's line of many years ago who they L. is Mel Kiper Junior. You wanted us a picky Schuler. Trent dilfer I there. Nothing about what he says but anyway. I I think we need a safety at this point. Johnny we need someone to get in there and Really mix it up A guy who can play in the box the slot at a moment's notice switch up and come up. I like Tyrrell Burgess Safety in Utah and to heck with Jacob season and Judge Jason Justin. Herbert Anthony Gordon. None of those guys made despite twitching. The PAC twelve is a nickel quarter a special teamer. I like them Johnny. Will you know as long as we're all defensive players? Go ahead and take it. I couldn't care less what we defensively. I'm only here to work with the offense and worry about what my quarterbacks by receiver bill so if you WANNA take a plane go right ahead. Well I like your thinking John Kids are GONNA fit in well a Mike. I said he can play all kinds of positions And he's from salt. Lake City is very Clean Kit We're not gonNA have to worry about any nonsense from him. So let's take the claim. Kid FROM UTAH. Burgess is our pet all right there you have it. The raiders selection is in Khyber. What do you make of what the raiders have done here at number eighty? Roy Like Burgess. I like the PIC. Position of need the raiders. You definitely need to continue to build depth At at safety at addressed it with the Marias Randall. Reggiani from the Cleveland Browns. They also brought a Jeff Heat. Who has a lot of starting experience from the Dallas Cowboys running back? Jonathan Abraham Next year after kind of lost rookie season Eric. Harris is still on the roster. He's still a dependable player But the way the safety position is going. Nowadays you need playmakers. There's a lot at three safety sets of these days so as much versatility as you can create a at that position a better and you're going to need some guys down the road so I think for this area in the draft you know might be a role player that first year but he's a projected starter somewhere down the line so it's a good solid back. So the raiders have selected their first defensive player in this draft. That being Tyrrell Burgess a safety out of Utah and now we will head to the number. Eighty one pick where the raiders will select again and the raiders are on the clock so I know that I said I don't care about defense but I feel like the defense now that I'm thinking about it really help us get the ball back if we can force turnovers and I look at a Guy from Michigan. That's one of the teams. I did watch this year. Joshu is a defensive end who can also play some linebacker. He played a little bit all over the field. He's versatile little on the smaller side but I think we can put some size on them. I know a guy that can really help with his strength training if we bring them in and so I think we can get a little bigger. I think he'd be a playmaker before. Some fumbles made a bunch of Saxe. Josh Gucci from Michigan is a guy that We can get a little stronger and he can really be an impact player here in the NFL. So that's my decision John. I know you love Michigan. Except for Harbaugh's political stances. I'm GonNa go against you here and choose. I'm going to get your wide receiver Johnny. You're an offensive guy. Let's look at a kid named Vance. Jefferson from Florida doesn't catch the ball much. But he's a nice kid he He's an I. I would take him John. Because of the Lineage Vans Dad is a former thirteen year. Nfl receiver. I'm sure you coach him as well. You've been around forever. And he's the current jets wide receiver. Coach Shawn Jefferson. This kid knows football. He's twenty three which makes them very old But I think you need another receiver Agwu Lars horrible. Why did you ever sign any can only play in the slot and worried about Renfro as well kid dropped a lot of balls? They need some They need some depth. Let's go Jefferson here to do any favors. The Guy's Dad. That's not why we're here to do this. Jack Receiver. We need some help. I need to get to the quarterback again rather than my guests is. Johnny you're GonNa go you have twenty. That's the first time we've been on the clock John. This this technology is throwing us off. I'm not GonNa win that thank you just for Muskie and I had actually. Because I'm the commissioner here up GonNa say something here that I have made mistakenly said. The raiders have taken their first defensive. Pick that's actually their second with Burgess. Because they had like a Christian Fulton earlier in the draft. That's okay good okay. Good L. You only announced the first round. Anyway I don't even act okay so we will now head over to vide- Kuyper for his analysis on this pick. I like the pick. And here's why I think football's become more and more of a situational game He brings heat off the edge He's versatile areas different positions scheme. It up put them in different packages to get him onto the field and try to create some pressure On the quarterback. I really like what the raiders are doing with their defense combined with. They didn't free agency with with what they're what they're.

"Find your shows up until the NFL draft. Next week on Thursday we will be hosting a show that will be live as well. We have three of those shows throughout the draft. One each night on Cox your view channel fourteen so make sure to tune in for those if you are around and have that access to that cable channel. So we have today is we're gonNA bring you a little bit of a mock draft. We're GONNA have a little fun with it. We're GONNA MAKE ED and atom part of the readers for an office here. We're GONNA have Adam Gruden and Ed mayock bringing out your picks for the raiders. All the way through the third round Vinnie is going to break down the analysis. So we'RE GONNA CALL HIM. Vinnie Kuyper. I'm Heidi Goodell. I'm going to keep these guys on the clock. An announce all the picks. We're GONNA see what they have here for today. You guys can even Bumi at some point if you want just for fun you know. I think that's what happens. Normally so Yeah we will get into this right now and I'm GONNA put out a minute on the clock for two minutes with each pick and so we're GONNA just Kinda I assume would the other teams big. But we're going to say like you know. Let's say that your best options available that you want on your team and we're just GONNA start rolling from there aright so here we go fans this time for the raiders. Draft okay the raiders. Have the number twelve pick and you're on the clock or so I'm ready. It's Mike I'm ready this. That doesn't sound like a very good impression. I didn't I didn't know no I'm not. I'M NOT GONNA impressed but I'm gonNA tell you I didn't even think about the wide receivers until I was asked about from any of the Las Vegas Review Journal and I had to remind I'd agree. It's funny we stink wide receiver. You know I want Jerry Judy. I want to get out of Alabama is not only an x and Y he's being a C- and in John's offense. There's nothing but sit. Johns like those route runners. He's a route runner. We love route. Runners will sit right into whatever. John Wants to do with the adaptable with the offense Z. Y. X. With the Yellow Banana. And I really think at this point Jerry Judy from Alabama's only is the only guy with go with well. You're not GonNa have to convince me to add a weapon to our offense That's that's what I want to do and I think we have talked enough off line during the draft and for this zoom meeting No Mike Mike Grady May I. I'm not sure yes. You're not gonNA have to do a whole lot of convincing. I think this is easy to me. Jerry Judy is the best of the wide receivers. His route running is on a different level. I know that there's some other other receivers have other very strong qualities but Jerry. Judy I think has only been. He's only had like eight percent of his catches contested through his time at college. Some might say a detriment. I would say this because he gets open every freaking a play. Let's just take Jerry. Yeah I think it's an easy choice. Someone told Goodell. He's got the pause button on in the basement to take the pause Nassir. We can actually see a town with our pick. Is I agree with Johnny. I know it could get a picket forty two. I'm very excited about the picks between one ninety three forty two. You're an idiot if you don't know what you're doing on the first down you have no evaluation sense. We will take Jerry. Jones and the raiders. Make their pick exactly two minutes there when the pick is Jerry Judy Wide Receiver Alabama now over to our Vinnie hyper with his analysis of what the raiders did with Jerry. Judy he's my number. One waters here on the board. But and I gotta say about getting reports that both the New York giants and the Detroit. Lions approached the raiders a possibility of trading up the raiders thought about it but opted against doing it. I don't know if was the right move. We could talk about a little bit later but as far as the pick Jerry. Judy is the Homerun wide receiver. The raiders have been lacking. He's GONNA FIT Perfectly John. Gruden's offense and he's going to be a tremendous compliment to Darren waller emerging tight end hunter Renfro the weapon. They uncovered seth round last year in the slot. Josh Jacobs Terrell Williams. If he's healthy adds a whole other dimension so the Jerry. Judy is the obvious thing and he puts offense to a holler level. That was some great insight there. We think the raiders will be happy with this pick. And let's move on to the number. Nineteen pig for your Las Vegas raiders as of right now. The raiders are on the clock so I just got a couple of texts of Ed Mayock. And there's some teams that are trying to get a hold of us. They don't know how to they don't know if they can zou main or we're GONNA use some other video conferencing apps or which make phone calls or what but they want. They're interested in trading up to the spot and I think that it'd be worth it to listen to offers and trying to get out of this. We can add a cornerback. Later on that might be Not a reach like it would be at this point and even add some other draft picks so I think we should listen to some offers here. No one is a smart as us and no one really believes we like Derek Carr this much anyway odds reasonably signed. Marcus Mariota and we love Nathan Peterman into Sean Kaiser nobody up in Napa sipping wine battling for that three spot. I think Iran here Johnny fits into your system yellow banana just like the wide receiver. I would take Jordan. Love Herein is the general manager. I feel I have an ability of rule you no matter how much you're making a year. I'm a get jokes. Funny Contri-. They effort on your here. That's not the reason and I would say that you should probably in these two minutes that we have turn on the game film from last year. Maybe check that out. I don't think we can ignore it. S and by the way I think even if we trade down we can still get John. I think you might be right. I'm more focused on the gear. The hats t-shirts of win. They're available so we believe that you're right. I'm GonNa go with you. You make more money. Everyone knows you're in charge anyway. Let's trade to pick who are going to trade with them. Where do we go Well I actually. I'm hearing from the Patriots that they want to. They want to move up to the spot and they actually do need a quarterback so let's trade down with the Patriots. It's not really. It's not really their thing and listen. Maybe we're kind of hosing on this deal a little bit get get some revenge for you know that one playoff game a few years ago on Johnny. You Know Bella Checks. Got Someone on your roof looking at you right now. I think they're making a big mistake year. But you're the guy so let's do it. We're going to take it up a second round. Pick and moving down to twenty three here okay. So the raiders have made a trade with the New England patriots. Pick up a second round pick and also the twenty third pick in the NFL Vinnie. Khyber what do you think of this? GotTa find out who they drafted at twenty third but I can see obviously Why they would do something like this There's probably about five or six players that they're comfortable with that nineteen and chances are one of the that group of five is GonNa be there at twenty three. Why not go ahead and pick up a second round pick? They don't have a second round pick right now. Now they do I at that. The third round picks at they have They're set up for a pretty big day on that second day. So I'm all in favor of the raiders trading dumber so we will head to the twenty third pick in the NFL draft where the raiders will be selecting after having made a trade with the New England Patriots Raiders. You're on the clock John. You're screwed because love is gone. Good and I'm not. I'm not happy good but you know you know. We need someone to cover in the outside. We wanted Eli Apple. We're too afraid of. The issues was caused a lot room so we offered him a local offering and couldn't come to an agreement Love is gone. John you know who I like. I like champ. I like winners. I'm John You like winners as well. We don't like losers. So let's take the quarterback Christian Fulton from Lsu. The Kid lifted the national championship trophy. And I think he spent he fits well opposite our boy. Trayvon mulling. This is a problem. that's who. I liked but I'm not going to agree with you here Okay why not since we both like the same guy? Let's make it happen. This is going to be easy. A wakeup goodell. Put Your Pajamas back on. And this would be an easy quick We're we're calling it in Texas an end. We're faced dominant Christian Fulton. The cornerback mellish. You take the raiders state demise.

"I J. Reynolds we had an NFL hold out come to an end on Sunday Jaguars defensive end yet he then got quite a ends his eleven day hold out without a new contract exactly says he's not angry couldn't reach an agreement on a long term deal with the jags but said he wasn't going to take a deal that he didn't feel was appropriate a man chance the sun for long term deal but it didn't get done so it is what it is this year like I said I love football hello my teammates in on your plate clearly you're willing to better yourself the season of our most myself every season I was a third round pick on an a rated better myself and still there think they don't value your work at the end of the day I know my value I know my work is it doesn't matter what anybody else know my right I showed each and every year in dock wages due to make just over two million this season held out because once a deal similar to the contracts that a couple of guys landed in the off season like the markets lord to the cowboys Frank Clark of the chief both of whom have deals with at least sixty million guaranteed earlier on ESPN radio Dickerson hood he held out to get a new deal he's not making a ton of dough about two million dollars he wants big pass rusher money the Jack said known at the end of the day he said you know what it's not gonna happen I'm going back to camp yeah well you know what you don't want to deal with is you don't want to do with the fines right with the fine soon you're skipping three day mini camp in in jet in June and by the way does that the mandatory three day mini camp in June that's going to cost you a lot of money and then just the fine on top of that not for for me if I'm gonna hold out I can make sure that I have enough money that's super head say you that's put away so how to work because and when you're losing something like ninety thousand dollars for skipping that three day mini camp in the fine on top of that that's about a half million dollars at some point like okay let's re negotiate later well you know they can the jags can can waive that I'm I'm sure I can I can almost guarantee you that part of the agreement for him to come to camp without a new deal is that they're not going to make him pay that five hundred twenty eight thousand dollars worth of fines so hopefully for his sake I hope for his sake that what's happening here well he wanted the deals that were like a hundred million dollars you know some of the pass rushers you look at the markets Lawrence Frank Clark you're talking about sixty five and sixty two point three million in guarantees respectively and the jags were not budging now is that going to impact Melvin Gordon Ezekiel Elliott no but it just shows you that sometimes these hold outs to end without the guy getting paid how about this how bout you and I project this okay when we see in quark AT in the numbers we put up and for those that don't know in quark eight right he recorded almost thirty sacks ten forced fumbles since he entered the league as a third round draft pick in twenty sixteen he's got more sacks of the past three seasons then D. for it then Lawrence and pretty flowers and so and those guys are making anywhere between forty five and fifty six million dollars respectively at some point he's going to get paid it just won't be now it may then be with this team but even though Duval county will come chasing after me after saying this Jeff you could see how the trajectory of the Jack or just not as it as it was even a year or two ago it's not going in the right direction I don't think for Jacksonville so he may get paid you just may not be with this team yeah I mean look they've got on for one more year than they could always franchise tag and he was a third round pick I think so there is no fifty there's no fifth year option they can exercise but they could use the franchise tag it's just I could see someone that young that's had what twelve sacks down and a half sacks aids acts as a rookie that's good now after the quarterbacks of someone's going to pay him a Jacksonville just isn't ready to do it so he has to report to camp knock it finds in play out this season and hopefully at some point during the year they can come to some sort of agreement but that time is not right now he was up against a Tuesday deadline to report to ensure he be able to accrue its fourth season to be eligible for unrestricted free agency this season still does he kill a leading cowboys camp there are expectations in Dallas ESPN cowboys reporter Todd archer expectations for the.

"Three rounds on Saturday. You wanna shooting seventy four yesterday as the winds gently wafted in about a thousand miles an hour on Long Island allowing Dustin Johnson to get within one shot of the lead, but kept ca did recover from four straight bogeys par three of the last four holes and secured the win. That's his fourth major title in the last eight majors for kept only one other player in the last sixty years, one consecutive Wanamaker trophies. And that would be that Tiger Woods fell, he missed the cut by the way, the next major is the US open at Pebble, Beach, KEPCO one that last year at Shinnecock Hills, and he also wanted the year before that at Erin hills. He's, he's doing this repeat thing. And he's got it down in the NBA on Sunday night. The game three of the Eastern Conference final in Toronto. The raptors outlasted the bucks. One eighteen one twelve in double overtime, their first win of the series after Gumbo, made the first basket of the game Toronto took the lead and didn't trail for the rest of regulation led by as many as eleven in the first half Milwaukee able to get the deficit down to, to going into the fourth and finally got even on George hill. Shot with four nineteen to play bits and could never quite get the lead. They still needed a Chris Middleton bucket with two seconds left. A force OT hill tied at twice. More in the first overtime finally put the books on top early in the second not. But Kawhi Leonard then scored eight of his game, high thirty six points in that final period, including a couple of thunder. Dunks bucks are up two games to one game at Scotiabank arena is tomorrow night tonight. It's game four in the Western Conference finals in Portland warriors lead the blazers three nothing after another comeback win on Saturday night. But yet another injury concern for the dubs Andre Iguodala had to leave game three twice due to a left calf injury. When he left in the third quarter eating comeback, an MRI yesterday showed nothing serious. Oh, he's questionable for tonight, Portland guard. Damian Lillard confirmed. He has a separated rib that he suffered during a scramble in game two says it won't custom anytime, but his shooting has been down the last game and a half just saying if they do get a game five it'll be in Oakland on Wednesday and H L Stanley Cup conference finals out west in San Jose game five, the blues blank the sharks five nothing to take a three two series edge. "He's like, look, I don't wanna be a part of the politics. And then think about I gotta go to my my work every day. And that's the first question if you were gonna ask me when. So what do you think about this? Or do you feel like you you've outplayed Cuyler or how's your practice habits? Have the coaches told you anything do they really feel like it's a it's a competition. If you wanna talk about real competition. A better scenario was that the Seattle Seahawks in two thousand and eleven I believe to dozen lever to twelve forget. Whenever Russell Wilson was drafted. They sign met Flynn to a nice contract free agent contract to be their starter. They drafted Russell Wilson. In the third round. They said we're going to have a competition 'cause we don't even have that investment monetary value for Russell Wilson. So, yeah, we'll we'll go out, and we'll have a competition. Russell Wilson beat out. Matt Flint, right? Beat him out right draft pick big third rounder beat them out. That's a real competition. Had it been reverse. I had met Flynn been the quarterback there in all of a sudden Russell Wilson. Russell Wilson was drafted number one overall. Matt Flynn would even had a chance there wasn't a Matt Flynn would not even have the opportunity, and that's what I'm saying. Now, it's the same thing now or even last year with Joe flacco, right Joe flacco was drafted and you used these days we're done. Lamar Jackson got drafted in the first round come home in the writing was already on the wall on brother say thing here in LA well, by way, and was here, but we knew when Jerry golfing one case keenum was just keeping the C warm for when Jared Goff took over. It's just the business of the business of sports. Not just football. Right. It's sports particularly football come on man more. So than any other sport. I think. Let's go to the phones Matt and Long Beach, by the way, we have really short breaks. So which is going to go to like six oh nine. So we're going to go for like twenty five minutes here. When did they who? Quick good. I want to ask you. When did when did Dangelo Russel get traded was after the Lonzo ball pick or was it before? So I just just because of the business of sports somebody drafts a radish round pick high at your position. I'm sorry. That's just that's the way the evaluation goes. Yeah. And magic decided to make that move. It was June. Twentieth. So right before the draft was. Yeah. Yeah. Right before the draft. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. They say we're going to draft your replacement. So it was either going to happen before after. But if they drafted Lonzo Indiana seventeen sorry, do drop was taken because they traded him for the picks before the also to remember Kingsbury at crap I hung up. Matt Matt rollback sorry, Keith. Protests is tech. Yeah. He spoke about Kyla murder because he had to play him when they played Oklahoma. Correct. Remember he recruited Murray also out high school. Yes. So he's been on this kid for years. Finally, got his guy. They showed them in the board room before the first pick yesterday in Kingsbury was very happy before they made that first pick in the first pick was murdered. What am I compared to my? So behind the scenes doors. I was comparing the Cuyler Murray for I think cliff Kingsbury was that was the girl in high school, and you always wanted to date her and she never picked you. You know? Right. And then all of a sudden in college you wanted her still, but she never was able you ever never able to catch her on. How you ran into Starbucks? You ran into her out of it. And you know, what you were look I'm looking you're looking boom. And it finally happened, right? That that was cliff kings Burke. Yeah. Finally, it took them awhile. But he got he got her. He got his girl calling on -tario. What up Karl?.

"But stark, I wait a long time. He's you know, he's his first ones will be like round six or seven you'll take top closer like where do you have India's and your rankings? I've got him in the third round. And then that's usually that's actually low for usually where how close I just think there's so much uncertainty still into who's going to have these roles on a lot of these teams here in with Amelia around. I don't know how the Mets are gonna use them necessarily is going to get faltered a little bit there towards the end. But you know saves the worth five points. And if you have a top closer who is presumably going to pitch maybe four times a week. That's a much greater opportunity for points than star. Who's going to get one start a week? You know it. It's just the innings going to be there. The ratios you don't have to worry about because it's point. So any strikeout get you a point. It doesn't matter. What the ratios are. It's it's just a different game because it's all counting stats, and so you want a guy who's going to pitch as much as possible and the top closers pitch on the regular. And because let's say five points. You know, your average starting pitcher who's like an ace gonna get eighteen points perhaps for the week closer might only get. Yes. Six a game. But if he pitches three times now, you're talking he's in the same neighborhood. So your roster construction for a pitcher and active like in a row league. It'd be like six starting pitchers three closers. Do you do the same thing points? Like, I think I think you certainly can and a lot of players do. But because a lot of players do, I've always advocated. The one ace one guy who you know, is gonna pitch six innings every time they're out, and they're not a lot of them anymore who pitched six innings every time. But if you have a pitch. Pitches around six innings each appearance. And then you just load up with nothing closers. I think that is actually the best strategy as long as you're league doesn't put any restrictions on. How many innings you need to pitch? I totally hate being in points leagues with you. Because this is this is the strategic tweak that you're maximizing every time, and you and I are battling over these closers because there's no limit on how much you can use a relief pitcher and appoints league just crazy you, and I are always the ones taking courses and people like, well, wait, what are they loading up with five to seven closers in this point because we can use them. When our starters aren't starting. We can use them exactly. And also the multiple times per week. Even if even if they don't not getting or put in save situations, you know, the closers work you get two strikeouts. In one inning out of four different closers on a day. You know, a lot of starting pitchers aren't even reaching the fifth inning these days or if they are they're getting pulled immediately. So there's not a difference between a number five starting pitcher and having four solid closers. So let's talk about the early the first round of. For for each of us here. I've got my travels the first pick. I believe Tristan. You have the same thing. I didn't know that. But AJ do you agree with that as monkey bets better is max Scherzer better because the ace of all ace's, I think is max sure at this point in my Chris sale. But you take in appoints league a starting pitcher like that over any hitter. I think you certainly can in certainly impasse seasons. I mean Kershaw has kind of been like the number three or four guy off the board for me. I don't certainly have as much confidence and closer Kershaw these days. I've you know, he's Kurds just talking about. Yeah. Exactly. You know, there's there's worry there. I don't think you can go wrong with either better trout. I have bet slightly ahead of the season as my number one. But trust my number two. So I'm certainly not going to quibble over one spot there. In terms of starting pitchers..

Kershaw Mets India max Scherzer Amelia Tristan
