"In my downfield it was a unique and I don't say this to pat myself on the back You ever get the chance to do your dream job You don't put yourself in the same place as the people you look at as heroes that made you want to do that job to begin with That's how it was as a marine of E checker bomb tech And so your service guys know that we work with them And so for us we're not joined marine OD We had less than 300 bomb techs on the Marine Corps In 2009 I think we lost 9 of us And in 2000 ten maybe I'm off by a year We lost 11 And then the next year we lost 7 And we're talking percentages of a job field Now we operate in two or three man teams attached to other units so it's not like our unit went over there and suffered a 33% casualty rate But our group of guys that went over there and were dispatched out of 64 of the 33 of us come back killed or catastrophically injured That's a big deal And it did take a lot to get through that But what got me through recovery was not only knowing I owed it to them but hey man I had responsibility Is that a sign that was ready for a dad And I had to step up and raise them whether it was with legs or not Because that's what my buddies would have done Critical Daniel grier the marine engineer that was killed when I lost my legs He had a son the same age as mine That didn't get his dad to get him back home My son did and I owed it to him to be that dad the stand up there and learn how to throw a ball with out legs and crippled up arms and be that guy And if you really want to take this and make a bigger picture that's what we owe each other as Americans to be active in our community to be a contributing member of society to give more than we take to want to stand in the gap to want to be there and make this country better and not do it in a way of demonizing people trying to do the right thing And there are people that want to get rid of Memorial Day because they say it stands for American imperialism Excuse me no Listen child go back and play in your corner until you become an adult and understand what this day is about It's about recognizing and appreciating and ultimately memorializing those to God and hopes that you might have a better life And I get a little bit upset but that's what got me through it
British Prosecutors Charge Kevin Spacey
"Because it seems British prosecutors have charged Kevin Spacey with four counts of sexual assault against three men. That was an announcement that came as a Spacey was in court in New York testifying in a different case. So The Crown prosecution service said that Kevin Spacey has also been charged with causing a person to engage in penetrative sexual activity without consent. I love how the word penetrated is in there. So there's absolutely no guesswork needed with what went on. What went on is what always goes on in Kevin Spacey cases. Now these alleged incidents took place in London between March 2005 and August 2008. And one in western England in April of 2013 and the alleged victims in all mid 30s and 40s rosemary ainsley, who was the head of the services special crime division, she said the charges followed a review of evidence gathered by London's metro police

The Battle of Good vs Evil Takes Place in Each Human Heart
"Joseph pierce, PEA, our C, E, the author of many wonderful books, the new one is called Benedict the 16th, defender of the faith. Joseph, we're talking about, you know, the evils in history and I think that it's important for us to say that at the heart of everything. You know it and I know it, it is a spiritual battle. So just because the Soviet Union crumbled didn't mean that wickedness had left the world. There's just as much evil in the world that just takes on different forms and what we have seen since the fall of the Soviet Union, of course, is that Marxism apart from China, which is its own story, but Marxism becomes cultural Marxism, and it affects us everywhere we look in the United States of America. It is at its heart, a spiritual battle. It's an ideological battle, but it seems to me that Benedict the 16th. He understood this. He understood that what he was at war with. Yeah, I mean, to me, John pulled a second, Benedict is 16th, and that other great figure who wasn't a Pope, Alexander Solzhenitsyn. These three men that they're almost exact contemporaries and they experienced the same reality that reality of secular fundamentalism. And what Alexander socialists said, it's really plays into what you just said, Eric, is that the battle between good and evil takes place in each individual human heart. So it's a spiritual battle, basically between the home of the art or the pub in man, the man on the journey who's called to get to heaven and homeless repair was 12 man who refuses the journey who wants to do his own thing. That battle takes place in each individual human heart and the club with Marxism, it actually plays to the proud man. It
The Battle of Monteverdi explained
"And what I want to do in this segment is complete my discussion of the terrace of pride and in the next segment I want to talk about the terrorists the next terrace, which is the terrace of envy. Now these are very big and bad sins and part of the part of what we learned from Dante is why they are so bad. What is it that makes pride the deadliest of the deadly sins? What is it that makes envy so destructive and so corrosive? Now, in the terrace of pride, we've met a politician named umberto, as well as an artist named Odyssey, both in a sense being purged and cleansed of the sin of pride. And now we're going to meet a third man and this guy's name is salvani. Now province I'm sylvani. Was the great Victor at the battle of. If you remember back to canto 5 of the inferno, we met this imperious character. Florentine, named farinata, and what he did was he betrayed his own city, Florence, and he made allies with Siena. And together, the ghibellines of Florence and the sienese army invaded Florence defeated the guelphs. That was the battle of Monty parity in the late 13th century.

Jussie Smollett Found Guilty of Staging Fake Hate Crime
"The jury in Chicago has just rendered a verdict of guilty on all but one of the 6 counts against Jussie Smollett. This was a jury I read that's composed of 11 white and one portion of color, ironically the same jury composition of the Kyle rittenhouse jury, and of the jury of the three men. Who were on trial for killing. Amen Arbery. All three jurors apparently had one person of color. 11. Whites. Those two juries were deemed to be problematic by many people on the left. If you watch CNN and MSNBC, which I watched, you don't have to. But nobody said squad about the composition of this jury. Poor qua. Everybody knew that small it was lying. I'm surprised it wasn't a laugh track. I would have loved for this one to have been televised. Found guilty of count one, making a fourth please report that he was a victim of a hate crime to officer Muhammad begg. Count number two, guilty, making a false police report. He was a victim of battery, to beg, count three guilty, making a false police report, he was a victim of a hate crime to detective Kimberly Murray. Count four guilty of making a false police report, he was a victim of a battery to attempt to detective kimberley Murray. Count 5 guilty of making a false police report, he was a victim of a battery to detective kimberley, Murray. He was acquitted on one count of felony disorderly conduct related to making a false police report. He was a victim of an aggravated battery detective Robert

"You just kind of put it on. It is Carson, as you said in the beginning of this episode, a fucking vibe. It's a fucking night. It truly is. It's nice. And that's better. And that is that there. That zipper. And it's just blue. It's so good. All right, well, I think that's the third man. I think so too. I think so too. Great, great movie, great movie. I'm really glad I'm really glad we got to this. Inspiration for Jack White's record company. So that's because Jack White's like weirdly and Norris and wells. That makes sense to me. Yeah. He's weirdly into a lot of weird stuff. That's his whole thing kind of. Yeah. All right. Well, Cory, you want to you got any final thoughts? You want to do those? Yeah, I mean, I don't know that I have many more final thoughts on the movie. It was very good. I'm glad that I know it Orson Welles looks like now. Yeah. He's a fudgy boy. He's got such a hudge be so handsome. Yeah, I've just kind of been over here in my producer corner crying and shame this whole episode. Now you're good, BB. So I got all my catharsis, even though the movie didn't give in. Yeah. No, yeah, a great, great episode, lovely movie. If you like what you hear, please be sure to like us and subscribe. "Off to all the ways in which I don't like cops. Well, the guy's just like, okay, are you done? Okay, are you done? Okay, are you done? I get it. You don't like me, that's fine. We need to move on, right? You know? And yeah, but so like, okay, so then we get to the midpoint of the movie and is just in that beam of light. And and it's so I really, the only thing I have to say is knowing that Orson Welles was in this movie. Was like, honestly, such a bomber because it was one of those things where it was so I got like 45 minutes in because I kept expecting Orson to come out because it's like, okay, like his friend said, he's probably gonna go to the conflict, or it's gonna be the head detective. Yeah, because I didn't look it up. I didn't look up who he played, like any of that stuff. I just, I thought he was like the lead of the film because it's if you do any of you are doing our very preliminary like, okay, let's put together I seize him. Let's find some images for social media. Let's just, you know, kind of like, let's look into the films decide like a fun order to do them. And it's just like, if you know anything about the film and said Orson Welles is in it. Yeah. You know, it's not even a question. And so the entire time, I'm just like, where the fuck is this guy? And then you had texted us when you were watching it like the night before I watched it. And you were just like, you are just like, you're like, I just wanted to double check. Like, did Orson Welles direct this or act in it and Carson was like, he acted in it. So then when we got and I knew he wasn't the director, but Cory, when you had some confusion about whether or not Orson Welles was in it..

"He was. I quit. I'm going home. Going home. You know, Corey, normally. Normally I will say like, I will be like, oh, like, Corey, it's cool, like you're not as much of a film guy, but just like, don't you have a master's degree in theater? He is like such a particular face. You you are not wrong. And no, okay. Well, that's why that's fine. I got my MSA revoked. And sorry, Dennis I Carson has it now. I do. I want to yet another college degree. Another college degree. Oh, goody. What money that will make me? But okay, okay. I want to, I think that and I want to do, you know, kind of a very quick version of it, but I think that we should do this Patreon style. I think we should real quick go through the plot because it's very drawn out on Wikipedia. So I think we should just like, I'm going to just paragraph my paragraph. Hit this plot point, yeah. Let's do it. It's a fucking it's before we got in here, I said, this movie is a whole fucking vibe. And it is a 100% a vibes movie, but it is also a movie in this play. Right. I mean, yeah, it's like a detective story. It's like a clue. You'll follow the lead that leads you to a clue where it's like my favorite detective story. Attack of the clones. Damn shame. Martin's doesn't talk to him honestly, but now for the whole time. So Holly Martins played by Joseph cotton, who looks so much like Tom Hanks in this movie, a lot of the time is a thought. He's a big fan. Holly Martins and American author of western fiction arrives in post Second World War Vienna, which has been environment among the allies. The Americans versus France is like, right? "I was like, this is gonna be funny, like I, you know, I was expecting it, you know, you kind of see it. You hear it referred to as noir. And I think that's going to be a large thrust of the conversation we have. Is just kind of like the genre of this bad boy. But it's one of those things where like, you know, I did very, very, very, very, very small amount of research beforehand and people were just like noir noir noir. So I was like, okay, hard boiled. Crime story. And the edgy you private eye detective boys, like let's go. And then it starts with that soundtrack that is called a zipper. It's called a zipper is the name of that instrument. And it's delightful it is. And. You get 20 minutes in it and you're kind of like not believing your sense is at first that no. You're just like, it just all falls into place. Oh shit, this is a comedy. Yeah. It's noir. It has all of the genre beats of the noir film. But this is funny and I'm gonna be able to and then 'cause you know, it's about 90 minutes an hour 40, so you get like that 20 minutes in and you're just kind of like cool. I get to lean back into the next 85 minutes. It's kind of like have a gas. My like hot take about this, it's not even a hot take. It's just like a joke. Like a joke about this movie is that this is maybe the best episode of SpongeBob SquarePants. It's got I mean, is that zither music? Like that zither music is so particular and so peculiar. One because it's just not like a it is not like an aural Aral, not oral, but like aural landscape that you get in it like most many other films ever. It is just for one instrument doing all the work and that one instrument is so fucking weird. Yeah, that instrument..

"So I would love to see because I mean, I'm sure there are just as many people who are like, oh yes, like citizen king 5 stars and I don't know. Anyway, you get it. Well yeah, because I love that it's one of the reasons I love letter box because I truly do think that if Rotten Tomatoes is this weird like haven of critical elitism, letterbox is like such a populist hellscape. It is the total opposite. Such that like, I think I have a you know and literally play Rotten Tomatoes prices, right? Like that is the juice of that game is being able to be like, okay, well, I know what I think about this movie and I'm pretty sure I can kind of guess what critics might think about it. And I don't have that mental faculty for the letterbox reviews. You're totally right. I can look at whatever the kind of average of any movie is and be like, I don't know. I really don't know that I can determine anything from this because I'm like, ah, it's such chaos. Yeah, yeah. No, and but letter box is litter box is the litter box. Letter box is the superior platform, however. I much prefer looking at I think a film score and letter box is much more indicative anymore of how I will feel about it than the Rotten Tomatoes score because a lot of bad movies get certified fresh nowadays. Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah, because it's the again we talk about all the time, but it's the because it's just either a yes, no positive positive negative, which is just not work very critically. I also like letterboxes and populist healthcare, but all the cool critics around letter docs too. Right, right. Anyway, anyway. Good game. Good game. Anyway. Good game. Wait, can I ask, can I ask really quickly? Because when Caroline said Transformers, I thought it was a joke..

That's very cool. Yes. Yeah, no. Which is like all the time. She literally will do like, how have you not seen fucking? I don't know, you know. The magnificent Anderson's or whatever the hell Orson Welles on the brain. Yeah, well what do you know? That is a good transition. What do you know about this movie? Very little. I mean, you just stole 98% of my thunder by saying it's worse in wealth. I mean, I alluded to that in the first in the first little bit when I said Citizen Kane Wayne quick nudge nudge. I know it's an Orson Welles film. Did he direct it as well or no. Okay, okay. Goodbye. Carol, what's his face? Terrell. Carol and looking up, not Carol Channing, Carol, Carol, Reed, Carol Reed, British director. Cool. I know that it is a black and white. Correct? In doing some like when we were gearing up to do the season and we were looking for photographs for marketing materials, I found one of Orson Welles that sanding the cameras had a bit of a Dutch angle. He's got a long black like a nice long black peacoat on with a hat and I seem to remember seeing a lot of images of like his silhouette at the end of a tunnel. Yeah, I believe. It was a very famous shot from this one. A lot of Dutch angles in this one, too, for sure. But honestly, that's pretty much it. Yeah. I would assume I don't believe I don't believe this is the third film in a series. I believe that I would assume that a crime goes down and they are looking for the eponymous third man. It's like, they have all the pieces they need to solve the crime, but they need to find the third. You'll see you'll stay. I'll say, so I watched this movie pretty recently after we watched it like the famous scene from it, which kind of spoiled the movie a little bit honestly..

I think, you know, I think like most people, like our age, unless they have a particular inclination or affinity for, like, like, classic, older films, you know, like each decade you go back, I think I've probably seen, you know, kind of fewer and fewer movies, I think I've probably seen more 80s movies than I've seen 90s movies. And I probably seen just as many 70s movies as I've seen 80s movies, but then like really like 60s, I've seen a little bit more than 50, 50, 16 a little bit more than 40s, 40s. It's just a little bit more than 50 or 30s. You know, et cetera et cetera so on and so forth. So I just think it's one of those ones where this isn't one of the Titans of like, you know, that area, you know, it's not a Wizard of Oz Citizen Kane, wink wink, nudge nudge. Or, you know, like, a tequila mockingbird, like it's not one of the top ten movies from pre 1961. Like everybody sees in their first semester of film school. You know what I mean? You're saying it's not a mank. It's not a mank, no. It's not mean. It's simply not mank. Yeah, no, I mean, look, I've said this before, I'll probably say it again, but I have the same thing as part of the premise of the show is that we're these giant gaping spots, you know. I don't think either of us are kind of as omnivore with movies as maybe we'd like to be, but like, I mean, I said this before, I'll probably say it. But my roommate is like super into the old shit. She's got her golden and silver age knowledge. Well developed. Yeah, oh, yeah. I didn't know that. I didn't know that..

It's mute an ominous prophecy portend seeming less than threat at sank from sight before it set a chill note coat however stout of homespun stuff could quite shut out a hard dull bitterness of cold that checked mid vein the circling race of lifeblood in the sharpened face. The coming of the snowstorm told the wind blew east. We heard the roar of Ocean on his wintry shore and felt the strong pulse. Throbbing there beat with low rhythm are inland air. Meanwhile we did your nightly chores brought in the wood from out of doors lettered. "Little up to my breast pockets. The shore driven win slapping water in my mouth. My boat cried and wind against the piles and plunged like a frightened calf. Then I jumped and fumbled my way aboard her for the first time in my life. I had a knife when I needed it. The bracketing we were boats. Were Pushing Elaine against the pier. I cut anchor line in tow line and kicked them free and they blew ashore on the mud. Bank but Elaine's anchor chain was still intact and that great old mud hook was still down. A hundred pounds of iron with spear shaped flukes. Wide is a shovel. Elaine's engine is not always obedient but this day it started at a touch. I hung on standing on the deck reaching inboard for wheel and throttle clutch with my left hand and that boat tried to help. I suppose she was that scared. I entered her out and worked up the anchor chain with my right hand under ordinary conditions. I can barely pull that anchor with both hands in a calm but everything went right. This time. I edged over the hook and tipped up and freed at spades then. Lifted it clear out of the bottom and nosed into the wind and gave it throttle and we headed into that. God Damn Wind gained on it. It was as though we pushed our way through thick porridge. A hundred yards offshore. I let the hook go and at plunged down grabbed bottom and the fairlane straightened and raised her bow and seem to sigh with relief. Well there I was a hundred yards offshore with Donna. Baying over me. Like a pack of white whiskered hounds. No skift could possibly whether it for a minute I saw a piece of branch goes skidding by and simply jumped in after it. There was no danger. If I could keep my head up I had to blow ashore but I admit the half Wallington rubber boots. I wore got pretty heavy. It couldn't have been more than three minutes before grounded and that other fair lane and a neighbor pulled me out. It was only then that I began to shake all over but looking out and seeing our little bowed riding well and safely was nice. I must have strained something pulling ankle with one hand because I needed a little help. Poem a Tumbler of Whiskey on the kitchen table with some help too. I've tried sense to raise that ankle with one hand and I can't do it. The wind died quickly. Leftist wreckage power lines down telephone for a week. Person on tape is not damaged at all. So here is what Phoenix had to say about this. It's such a masculine telling the story. He did a terrible thing terrifying his wife but to him it was a quick John to help out his boat. And he metaphorically didn't drop his cigar just kept cool he's sixty years old in this story and it's autobiographical what an asshole. But also how? Beautifully written couldn't agree more Phoenix. I think it's an interesting character. Reference point for the character of Johnny Marysville who sees himself? Is this kind of masculine. Do what I want character And it is also a really shining example of what the whole man versus nature. Strife can be it really allows for this kind of this happened and then this happened and then this happened plot Without any need for a will. What'S THE VILLAINS MOTIVATION? Nature doesn't need a motivation. It just needs to absolutely take you down. So the next thing that I'm going to be reading is a little kind of mid point. Breather. This is a poem called snowbound subtitle the Son that brief December day this by the poet John Greenleaf Whittier now. This description is something that I think that anyone who's lived in New England has a real respect for In the same ways that the desert convey this really all inspiring sense of fastness and uncaring. So too can winters in say Maine and Fremont so that in mind as I read this brief Jonty oil poem for you. The Sun that brief December Day rose cheerless over hills of gray and darkly circled gave at noon a satellite than waning moon..

Look it strikes me that you're sort of not anchored tethered to like current in music necessarily mean you've got you've got stories about ice and there's like a another story about current banned from Miami called Dracula but then you you know the cover is covers else. Coltrane right who's best known for her jazz work from the sixties and seventies being the wife of John Coltrane. You're not trying to be rolling stone here obviously and keep up with the billboard one hundred or anything right what we can't and we don't want to and we don't need to so what this is about. It's about about stuff that we love and that our friends love and you know increasingly people. We don't know who just reach out to US love You know. There's an article in the next issue about about this really cool. It's an older thing. But it's really cool Greek Spiritual singer from the early Seventies. Who worked with that Van Jealous Guy on? They made an amazing electric pop record. Nine hundred seventy five and her name. Is Marian Gelin. He tracked her down and Vangelis. Who did the blade runner soundtrack and shades series of fires? Probably what he's best known for but yeah blade runners probably the coolest thing track stuff like that which is just all my God and so that is that particular article is tied to a release but like stuff doesn't need to be an for people who are writers. That's huge for them. Because usually we all have to or if it's an older thing thing it has to be exactly the this anniversary of it you know. There's there's so much fiftieth anniversary this year of anything from nineteen seventy. We want to be free from that and and free from all these normal constraints but also work within them and have fun columns and all that You've also got a an interesting story story in the current issue about. Describe him as a Downer psychedelic. And from Grosse Pointe back in the late sixties called index yes. I haven't finished that story but I I just started reading it on the way in this morning I really interesting. I've never heard of them before. This oh this is so great and and I can. You can find him on Youtube. I understand Yeah Youtube. Youtube is but Stuff was recently reissued by a label out of Italy like a year or two ago. I had tried to get something started and I was GonNa do like a local newsprint only thing and I just didn't have the the money this Guy Glenn Warren. WHO's a great local writer and musician? he wrote that feature and did all this great tracking people down and finding original photographs. that you know no one has seen in. Maybe a you know sixty years or something they were this band. who was playing high school dances and they were like covering hits? But then they They were a garage moment and they may be didn't have all the chops so what they wound up with was unintentionally may be amazing and so they're super super special and super cool story in there about how they played a summer resort in harbor springs with Iggy pop back when he was is playing with a band called the iguanas the stooges and everything which I love that yeah instinct iggy pop playing in harbor springs a trip and then also yeah their stuff there to where it's like they're playing with local sports legends too because they just wound up being like in that you know. They're Grosse Pointe right kind of being on a slightly higher social scene than than certainly like iggy was who is like a trailer. He lived in a trailer from if Cellini right. Yeah so no website citing plans for a website at all not even facebook page or anything like that. Not Now I think like social media makes total sense for us to do and to have fun with but the point is that it's a magazine and unless you're a magazine with all of the resources of Conde nast behind you like why give give a whole bunch of your content away for free like I just see people do that e and then if you go there and you only get half of it or you have to do a paywall or something. It's just whatever we're also. I was hired by Amazon and the in the late nineties when they actually had real content and then for years of working freelance on the Internet. It's really nice to not happy working in the Internet anymore. Like it's really nice to just work on this physical thing. Wow interesting Where can people will find maggot brain around town here in Detroit? It's it. It's obviously at third man. Records is also at a bunch of other record stores is it. TRINA SOLVES ITS IT. Hello records it's You picked it up a book. Beet correct that's right. I know park super great store. That has been around for a long time. It's proprietor carry. Lauren will likely could be the subject of a feature at some point. Alkyl really interesting in a really important story going back to. I think early eighties now. Interesting all right well well Mike macgonagall you're the managing editor and Add Rep. Many hats The inventor of Maggot Brain magazine. Congratulations on getting the first one out the door. That's not so much and look forward. Thank you guys so much two more things to tell you about last month we had Windsor Star reporter. Dave Dave Bad Ajello on to talk about how a portion of Detroit River shoreline that was contaminated by uranium collapsed into the river. Well turns out. There's a twist twist according to a new report by local four neither Detroit bulk storage nor the landowner revere copper had a permit to store the aggregate material. Oh that caused the collapse and they haven't for years. The two companies are being fined. Three thousand dollars a day while they're in violation. The city of Detroit is going to start an annual inspection of industrial sites. But it's important to keep watch on this story to make sure that they do it. Oh Hi all. This is kermit comedy. FROGGER sesame street news. If you're of a certain age then you definitely know that voice and now kermit the frog is going on display at the.
