"He let me hang out with him all morning, and he has 30,000 chickens. 30,000 chickens. That's a small farm. That's a small farm. And California changed its law so that you have to have cage free birds now for layers. What cage free means surprised me. So when people raise free range, they're just out in the field and they have nest boxes. Is that how they do it? Well, they probably come back in. Will be maybe have a setup like this. What it means is that he has three barns each divided in half, so there are 5000 birds in each portion that is separated from the other birds, and they're crowded together like people on a big city subway car at rush hour. So wing to wing. Yeah, I mean, they can jump around. They have tears and they can go up and down. There's more freedom to move around than being in a cage. But I looked at it and I said to him, wow, this is a dream for a virus. And he said, yeah, I've had to increase my vaccinations against different diseases because of it. And then I spoke with his vet and she said that that's happening with all of her farms in California. So I don't know a lot about the industry. So please understand. But I imagine cage free birds running around and the field and just 30,000 birds in the backyard, right? Just frolicking around, yeah. Yeah. Well, that's not cage free. That's beyond cage free. And so I asked the farmer, you have a lot of land here. Have you thought about doing free range? He said, I have a lot of coyotes here. Do you have coyotes to get in here? All the time. Yeah. Did they ever get the chickens? Yeah, that's why we put up and the coyotes get onto the land and come to the barn. He goes, look at all the plywood I have on the barn here. That's to keep the coyotes from reaching in and grabbing my chickens. He said, if I let them out here on the range, do you know how many coyotes I'm gonna have? They turned the power back on at the fairgrounds. You did you see. The the remnants of the scoreboard go up in flames. I heard about it. But i heard about it but i think that that That tote board was the longtime ready for a new one so anyway maybe it was a good thing exactly well and and of course you know it's not to say that that Things have all you know. Have broken The right direction but You know in addition to the not seeming like there there's a tremendous amount of of Damage to recover from The fact that they can't sold jazz fest Gets the turf action back on the docket for november. Well look. i'm. I'm never going to complain about that because we were in jeopardy of losing the turf course for for this year and So when they cancelled jazz fest. It definitely Opened it back up for us to have turf racing As as normal unbelievable. We're hoping that they. They had some barn damage. to i think maybe two or three barns that they're working on getting fixed so i hope that there's no delay in the opening Of the fairgrounds. This year mike steadham with us and Plenty to be Excited about and you know we i. I just mentioned the ladies turf stake in passing. Let me before we wrap. I do want you to talk about princess grace. I'm not. I haven't. I didn't reach you after the yellow ribbon but she is probably a among horses that have strung together. Important wins mike i. She's probably the least known. She's won the the. Mrs revere the doctor penny and the yellow ribbon in succession. And i'm sure if you said you know what what philly and mayor turf star Is is writing a win streak. Her name wouldn't come up i. She's under appreciated. She certainly is under the radar and she shouldn't be because she is got so much talent. She's a kind of a smallish Light body philly just has the heart of a of a grandstand and She goes out there and runs hard every time and she's a great to winner on dirt and turf which is pretty amazing in itself and so we're You know we're looking forward to this weekend. And then from there we'll see how she runs there and then decide what Where we that Depending on how she runs and how she comes out of it but she's a she's really talented philly and Another one that we're just really lucky to have our barn. Well the having having won the yellow ribbon. I mean she. She's added to the list. I brought it up earlier this morning. about having a win under the under the girth At del mar which Has got a you know gird everybody for heading toward breeders cup You know you negotiate that course Your you got yourself a are they up to sleep. Yeah we're we're we're not in a great spot. Because in that respect because she's more of a mile to a mile and a sixteenth philly whereas the filly and mare turf division is a mile intrigue right. Yeah we'd have to run her against the boys which i mean. We're not saying that that's off the table. We'll say we'll see how she runs here. And then the other option. There's also the goal to cova that runs on breeders cup day straight to going going a mile Show you we have. We have good options. We also have the matriarch At del mar at the end of the year. It's the great one so Also the first lady at keeneland so we've got a lot of good options for but we'll take one race at the time and and see what happens this weekend. Another unique aspect about this philly. Who were we're going to absolutely trumpet of off of this visit. She's got five wins and a second in her six starts and the six starts of comments six different ovals. Yeah he like. I say she you just poynder pointed in the direction and she's going to go out there and and run hard and if you if you watch. The yellow ribbon closely can disarm road an amazing race but you know top of the stretch. He had a little choice to make whether going outside or splitting horses And i mean she. She's split horse at the top of the lane and then just exploded And you know started to draw and that was a good quality field that she beat so She's just one of those horses. That just really talented and mazer you send her out there and you know obviously she can do it on either surface. I think preferred surfaces the grass but She's she's multiple grade winner on both surfaces. I it's amazing and I mean obviously the moore's would boy. I'm sure a great one would be. I would be just a delight for them to to. You know when the time comes to have that You know to have that under her under her resume without a doubt. I mean john and susan more they bred her and interestingly we trained a damn masquerade. And i can tell you this that. That's where Princess grace gets her tenaciousness from the mother because she she was quite talented. Masquerade wasn't quite a thousand but she was also one of those ones that she got into a battle At the top of the lane she was gonna fight it out every time to try to get her nose in front of the wire so In john or you know really proud of This philly that they bred well not only would it be nice to have a broodmare to be added back to their their broodmare band with a great one. They've never won a great one. Despite all the success. They've ad. I didn't know that. Wow that's interesting just grade. Twos.
