"It wasn't like I didn't come up with 5 or 6 choices. I mean, I didn't sit here and go, hey, can I call you back? I gave him about 6 or 7 selections. You heard those, didn't you? Yeah, I found you, but you know some of the greatest. JK. JK. I don't think Kenny sabre would be on that list in my opinion. There was only 5 spots available, okay? There wasn't, this wasn't, hey, Nami 50 quarterbacks you've seen. The guy asked me, can you name me the 5 best quarterbacks in college football history? And I gave him about 7 or 8. Hey, Paul, would you know what? It's just like I always say, just an opinion it's gonna you can get. And bye bye. By the way, JK. I don't think I don't think I don't think I had a banner in the group, did I? Oh. No. No, no. No, you did. Hey, but I still like snake and all those guys. We're fantastic quarterbacks, but I don't think either one of them belong among the 5 best college quarterbacks of all time. Well, yeah. Okay. You do understand what we're talking about here, don't you? Of course, this isn't the 50 best quarterbacks. This is the 5 best. Who would you put on your 5 best list? That played in college, not what they did in prison. No, this is the only college. I don't care about the pros. That's for somebody else. What about Donald McMahon? We just fought in college, right? I mean, he was very good, but he would not be on my 5 best list. No. I had Chris mcnair. I thought he was probably the most interesting guy. The guy said, Eric mcnair. Yeah, yeah. He would definitely want to. But like I said, you're going to get me one. You got four more. You got four more or you're just going to go wave the white flag at one. No, I got my three from Miami and Michael Vick. Well, your list is pretty bad, in my opinion. How could you how could you leave how could you leave Tim Tebow off your 5 best college quarterbacks? Man, you know what? Your love affair with Tim slash Joe hey Joe old thank you both. You know, hey, JK, you knew I was going to bring him up, did you? Oh, you can't leave him over. By the way, as I said, Tebow, I think Danny wharf will probably belong in that list too. Hey, hey, Paul, you know goodwill. Tebow was, what do they call them at Alabama? And it told on him so he got to the pros. Yeah. But we're talking to JK, we're talking college. I think he was a terrible pro quarterback. But he was a great college quarterback. I don't think he was the NFL. How could you by the way, how could you call Tim game manager yeah, that's what he was. No, I mean, Greg McIlroy and AJ McCARRON were gay managers. Thibaut was not a game manager. And back to those 500 different callers, if you get 500 more calls and neither one I'm gonna bring up mcelroy or mech air. Well, no, I mean, I mean, those guys are not on the 5 best quarterbacks in Alabama history. Hey, come on, Paul. Hey, by the way, I mean, if you're going best quarterbacks in Alabama history, I might just look at the last four guys. Hey, Paul, let me tell you something, you ain't gonna believe me. I know you're gonna do disagree, but you know who's the best quarterback on Alabama's 1992 national championship team? Well, I know Jay Barker was a starter. Oh, I'm about to give you to ask. David Palmer. Well, you know what? Without David Palmer, they would not have come close to a national championship. You're right. You're exactly right, Paul. And by the way, he saved the season, not against Miami. He saved the season was a punt return against, I think it was Louisiana tech. Yeah, you know what Paula asked and ran into him before they played us last year in August. I ran into him at a gas station. I told him we was going to get revenge, but of course I was wrong. JK, I'll tell you one more thing about this. He should have never played that year. He should have been kicked off the team. Yeah, but they needed him. He got, he got arrested, I think two or three different times. And gene stallings just completely looked the other way. Yeah. He's not doing the one that looks the other way. I'm just making a point. I distinctly remember that incident because I wrote, I have a couple of books of my articles and I happen to see it a couple of months ago. Hey, JK, great call. Thanks so much. We'll take a short break and we are back after this. We are officially out of time for this program. We appreciate all of you for being a part of it. Some really interesting guests today will see you right here tomorrow.

"And bigger with every second, every minute that this ref delayed. At one minute was Courtois. After about 17 minutes at the referee doing these remember, his whole lads do not cross it. I looked and I saw that it was just an enormous albatross wearing goalkeeping gloves and I felt that too, just a swollen enormous man just oozing confidence and poor Alfonso, young Alfonso, so much time, too much time to think about the enormity of it all facing that albatross in goalkeeping gloves, Thibaut Courtois, him. A kid born in a refugee camp in Ghana about to become with the world watching the first man in a 155 years of Canadian history to score a goal of the World Cup. And you can just see the panic set in Devo and let's just say Alfonso's penalty was the worst thing out of Canada since nickelback. Yeah, it wasn't a strong penalty. Courtois saved it easily. Put it actually fairly close to Alfonso, but it failed to connect anything with the rebound. And there it was a huge, huge chance so heartbreaking for Canada, all of their fans, all the back Canadian Friends, and yes, it remained nil nil. The credit Canada, though, because their energy stayed so bloody high. They remained in the ascendancy. Press the air out of all bam Belgium, that back line of aldehyde. Could not live with them. And this was the fearless vertical footballer Greg Bert has been promising us, Dave. Canada stole it at John O my you to eat it as yeah, just like British Columbia and it was magnificent to witness. I am not kidding. But I saw your pants again watching this game. They charged at Belgium. I asked over to how would you say holy crap, Canada can ball in both Flemish and balloon and M van der burger tweeted us God fordor Canada can barland in Flemish and saku BLEU, Canada pursue in walloon David because they can Joe can't they these lads in one sound like you sound like Derek ray. Yeah, I thought Canada were playing total football. They were playing beautiful football. You know, the selection that he's put so many offensive players on the pitch put them often into defensive positions just to get his best players on the ball. They have so many gifted attacking players. They were knocking the ball around. They were making triangles. They were really pushing around the Belgians and the Belgians looked a little leaden footed. KDB looking like he had two chocolate legs made a very, very heavy chocolate. Bunnies. Canada had so many chances to also to slip the ball out completely to an open man. Only two snatchers shot and said, there was so much creativity, there was so much goodwill, but there was almost no composure in front of the goal. They could have been one or two nil up quickly. And that, that would come back to horn and they sucker punch, Canada did not see coming. It was aldehyde, who dropped a drone strike of a pass, splitting the defenders. Bats, your old mate Dave. And it's about the kind of player that you've got to imagine. That's his first impulse when he was played in. Was probably like, let's do something for the lulz for the crack. Maybe I'll like Balotelli just do a spin move. Just do a 360 spin and try and fight the ball into minus. The thing that shocked me most about the goal wasn't the circuit bunch was that bats lashed it home, he did something serious. He did some of his serious work. I got to tell you, I've always been quite fond of bats, you know this. And I'm not, I don't love the fact. The problem was, is every time we went on loan, he played horribly, but he played much better at Chelsea. Scored a goal that won us the Premier League once at West Bromwich Albion, I believe on the final day of the seasonal, but if you want to play it to lash the ball off the post into his own face, bats is the mantle that's good. But he's got a lot of skill. I mean, this take out of air bear to be a bit built. Hit the ball. It wasn't really pressed by the Canadians, but hit that great pass. You know, he looked over his shoulder bats. I don't know if you ever tried to do this, but to look over your shoulder at a ball that's coming. And judge the bounce and then hit it on sort of the half volley he hit him. So hard to do. I can do it quite easily, but it's one of the hardest things in football. It's like your dreams where you're playing chess with death. Yeah, and he smashed it, smashed it past the keeper. Great finish. Worst thing to happen to Canada since the freedom convoys. And I gotta know, I don't like ragging on the refs, but the referee in this one. If you remember the referee from the Tunisia Neil Mali one match at Afghan, where he blew the final whistle early twice. He actually did it again, always as a tribute to himself. He blew the whistle 15 seconds early. Yeah, this is my work. This is what I do. And do you want to do this? This is how I call the game. I'm hard, but fair in a bit, not lenient with time. And also missing one and arguably two Canadian penalties, salt in the wound afterwards, and the second half became Canada just streaming forward, punching themselves out a little bit. Belgian trying to catch him on the bait is actually fascinating watching KDB. Belgian KDB plays balls through that would be certain goals for Manchester City and I'm just going to deliver it through to arlen, but the World Cup, they kind of go nowhere. The player doesn't know what to do with them. And he just kind of scowls around in frustration. It is amazing to watch a bloke who is used to having telepathic connections with like 2017 mates in his squad have to suffer by suddenly passing to mere mortals. Yeah, very different. That great big bottom small sort of came back on his comeback tour. I thought he looked nice to see his peaches. Yeah, look like one of their best players, but Canada edged this game in terms of performance for me pretty easily, but this is the World Cup of if you don't take your opportunities, it's going to come back and haunt you, your honor. Yeah, the full name of the World Cup is the men's World Cup of big boys and it's a harsh lesson for this kind of they never stopped. They never gave in. It was a magnificent performance 20 shots. This is the story of the game. 20 shots only two on target. Ultimately felt like the ultimate Drake curse. And there's a second ticked away, a tweeted. I don't like to be hyperbolic, but if Canada are not able to score their first ever World Cup goal here. There is no God. A life has no meaning. I think both are arguably true. I'd probably defend that position if I did an MA in peace studies, but I feel for you Canada, but you still have the roots and the tragically hip, and Keanu, which is not nothing. And I did love John herdman, the great managers, peace match quote, I told my players they belong here and we're going to go an F Croatia. And I really hope they do. It's the most wonderful time on the football in calendar. What a footballing feast we have stretched out before us and drafting sportsbook.

"Also, subscribe to twitch, to watch all of our World Cup side casts. We do great side cast work in which we watch the game along with you at the side. That's twitch.tv slash men in blazers, subscribe, great, great attendance from our gear for peace on that stuff. The U.S. wells won. It really was a lot of fun. Come be with us on those. I'm not sure I would call it broadcasting, but it's a lot of fun. Well, it's broadcasting technically watching a grown bald man named rod changes soiled underpants several times over the course of 19 minutes. It's very Betty hill. We are twitching Friday's win. Against England, he says boldly and overconfidently will be live on Twitch, just follow us at twitch.tv slash ren and blazers, follow us and you will know when we go live. We had this is incredible. We had 570,000 of you watching our crap during the whale's game, essentially watching me change my Tommy John's. I cut a hat trick. I got to have chicken Tommy John's, yes. And we made a we may have Matthew McConaughey and by may I mean, will join us as we clip England. Make sure you're subscribed to this pod feed where Rogers heat map has reached Brendan aronson levels. We take with Rory Smith yesterday, hurt Gomez tomorrow and in a minute, I'm going to take a new episode of world corrupt way of my mate, Tommy vital, yep, just because they told me it's get on with it. Stop here. Moaning. Oh man, that's just something. By the way, that would have solved me. Like 8 hours of research I didn't eat it if I just took the ivory veg get on my knife. Sometimes. Oh, watch this space anyway. Okay, we're going to need plenty to drink to survive all of this so can you kick us off with a tourist with a drink right now, roger? And what raise my third first bud of the day to the Japanese fans who after their massive historic victory over Germany to kick off their World Cup? How do they celebrate? They celebrated by staying behind, pulling out giant trash bags and proceeding to clean up all the garbage from the terraces and act of respect that they've also carried out previous tournaments, but one honestly I never cease to marvel at it's so humanly beautiful and May they be the future of football David. What I would like to call enviro hooligan is a viral look in the summer. I love it. Well, just from a footballing perspective, we just won. We just beat you. What are we going to do? Are we going to go and kick out the teeth of the German fans now and let them know by the trail of their own blood, do these number one? No, you know what? We'll pick up our crap. We'll pick up our sandwich. It's a great football song. Clean up clean up everybody everywhere. Clean up. Clean up everybody. Do your chair. We've left the terraces spigot, spaniel never changed that. Oh, I love it. Football fans is a force of good. I love. I love you. Okay. You mentioned the Wii matter of that U.S. men's national team versus England game coming up on Friday. We're going to get into that later in the podcast as well as Saudi Arabia's seismic upset of Lionel Messi's Argentina. But to today's football now and Belgium won Canada nil. Our neighbors to the north rod, they put on a heroic display against perpetual major tournament favorite Belgium, but ultimately fell short. Canada squandered a massive chance early when Alfonso Davis had his penalty saved by Thibaut Courtois, but in the 44th minute it was that man, bats, mishi batshuayi, who smashed home, a left footed finish to ultimately make the difference in this one. No points, but still a lot to feel good about for John herdman's men here, roger. And agony, Anna wonder and agony and a one day, it started off so beautifully because for the first time in 13 thousand 316 days, Canada took the field at a men's World Cup game. I'm so happy for the Canadian fans are now watching their team seeing that national anthem. Even in this World Cup of grotesquery was a beautiful moment that reminded that what is good about football, the moments of joy, like that, they can still ring out, and the team. They're regional champs. They are kings of Concacaf. They are, and they're a joyous, diverse, collective, just a beautiful face of the modern changing Canadian nation. And yes, tweeted that part of me was worried that they wouldn't be able to score without having a conveniently located snow bank to dive into and celebration. How those words tactic and tactical analysis will come back to haunt them. No challenge Qatar rods. Don't challenge Qatar. They'll build snow banks down there, or they'll have people come in and build snow banks. They were facing number two in the world, Belgium, just the last dance for the remnants now of their golden generation, no big rom injured but talent all over the field. And Canada lined up 39 year old icon, a tiba Hutchinson the oldest World Cup starter ever God bless him, and they open up Dave. So optimistically charging down both flanks Buchanan, Davis, could almost hear them scream. We don't fear you Roberto Martinez. You lovely man who knows nothing about football tactics. And the pressure plate off inside ten minutes, Carrasco, I'm out, shot lashed, hit him in an unusual position, van nailed on. And the referee will talk about him in a minute. He did seem to take forever. Oh my word, thank you. I just couldn't believe it. By the way, I should say, I do think that that penalty was a little harsh, the speed, that ball came in. I just can't believe that there's anything really that the player could done. Yes, his arms in a natural position, but he's not expecting to be defending the ball at that point. He's just like, he's just reacted to what happened. He just had an itch. I just had it, right? I just got lashed that ball, hit him in the arm. But then the ref took about four and a half minutes between that to seem to want to get, you know, I don't know if you ever have these dreams. I have this recurrent dream where I'm trying to usually when I'm playing golf. And I'm trying to hit a tee shot, but I can never get the T in the ground in a place that will allow me to get a backswing and get to clear a tree in the thing. And just you can't say I have to move around and move around and people are getting impatient all around. This ref just I don't age to get it in a position. I just have a dream where I'm playing chess with death. He took shuffle down the whole line. Speaking to every player, back up, back up, there's the line. I'm shuffling down now you. I just told him. It was like watching. It was like, watching somewhere when you're on the when you in deepest bowels of coach, I think the person with the drinks trolley finds a way to see 57 D quicker than this referee did and essentially ice the bloody kicker. That was the effect that's really where we were. Yeah. Took forever. And especially when you've got a large biped, like Tebow Courtois in the goal. He just seemed to get bigger and bigger and bigger with every second, every minute that this ref delayed. At one minute was Courtois. After about 17 minutes at the referee doing these remember, his whole lads do not cross it.

"Where we've got some challenges to The Crown, some pretenders, and some who are just good vibes. Our teams in this realm, Belgium, Croatia, Canada, and Morocco. We start with the Red Devils hailing from the country whose beer is forever enshrined by UNESCO as an intangible cultural heritage of humanity. Oh, beautiful beautiful Belgium, where the ambers, the Flemish reds, and the blondes have both drinks of choice. And what you see if you squinted at the hair color of their squad Belgium have been every single football hipsters World Cup team of choice for. Oh, a couple of gazillion years it feels like at least the last consecutive couple of tournaments since a young dazzling squad qualified in 2014, returning the country to the World Cup after a two tournament absence. Yeah, that 2014 team was the encyclopedia definition of dark horse coming into the tournament ranked 8th in the world with a roster including a fledgling KD, be a little baby one, big rom. He was then little romp. Thibaut Courtois, Eden Hazard, that classic big bottom small, all of them around the ages of 21 to 23 alongside many more names that we've said countless times in the 8 years since. And I group of such promise with so many players on the verge of making it just an indelible mark across European club football really a golden generation that always appeared a lot ready to dominate international football for years to come. Especially after achieving a truly impressive quarterfinal finish in 2014, no mercy on Tim Howard in the end you bastards, but Belgium, the yet to live up to that full promise they finished third in 2018. And I've obviously made little dent on the intervening Euros and 2022 feels like the last chance saloon for those of that golden generation that remained be the best of the rest. That's no longer sufficient, a final bite test on that precious metal, which honestly surprisingly it's grim tarnished with time. Yeah, all that pressure is also heaped on The Shining dome of your friend, Jason Derulo enthusiast, manager, Roberto Martinez, who has been entrusted with Belgium's precious jewels since leaving his position at your Everton in 2016. No hard feelings you bought king while big roms fitness and confidence remained something of a quite traumatic question mark. He only returned to full fitness back in October to have prolonged hamstring injuries, but they're already reported in Italy that the jet is re aggravated. We wish him well. He's been included in the squad. A squad that contains some of the biggest names in world football. What they can do theoretically, that's no mystery. There's big game brick wall Courtois goal transition wants to KDB marshaling midfield and Eden as our beautiful beautiful lead newest struggle for minutes at real. But there's also the Andrew troughs earth. That optician's favorite trotting on a superstar. Sadly, defense not what it once was, or maybe the problem is that there is what it once was. Belgium are still rolling out that pairing of super Jan for tongan. Now I think downgraded to super ish and verton and Toby aldehyde to vero in a factory. A partnership, this is just not quite as imperious as the days of your both now play Belgian club football and it shows. It woke up qualifying, Belgium kept three clean sheets, total to a witch. It gave me games. Against Belarus, I'm not even sure they count. They vote technically. Promise an expectation as ever is heaped on this Belgian team. They enter the tournament with their best ranking, entering a World Cup yet improving on 2014 and 20 18s 11th and third respectively. They are now the second best team in the world by griefers metrics. Whatever those may be. I think it's alcoholic drinks recognized by UNESCO David yeah, but perhaps not by the Qatari royal family. UNESCO clearly not heavy on the traversa, the herb fill brandy of next up in group F's, Croatia. It's the secret to lucuma mod riches, longevity. Straight into it, Dave. Luca Modric, of course, the beaten heart, the beaten soul of every single midfield, the graces come to effort to Luca is its engine. Oh, his treve passes is kronos like mastery of time and space. They've carried a Croatia squad that's thinner than its chief competitors deep into two consecutive tournaments, they finish it around the 16 in the last Euros, and with delirious somewhat unbelievable brothers up to France in 2018. Why on earth would he go to Everton roger moderate 37 years old? He's the oldest in a squad of players that is clearly betting on experience center backs. Josh go gavial and Josip so talo 20 and 22 are among only four players in the squad younger than 24. Basically, Croatia's entire squad is made up of those dudes at the gym with, you know, the 4% body fat. They tell you the secret to injury prevention, I swear, it's 20 minutes in the sauna full motion in the coal Lake and a teaspoon of olive oil straight with every meal. It works. Try it. The moderate Kovacic brozovic midfield engine room, style its third major tone. It feels like more. Together with nearly 300 caps of experience between them. And the suffix itch will be prevalent across Croatia. I think it's a historically a lot of people want to know why do they all have the names itch. And I believe this is right. Google it. I think it's a tribute to pulisic, David or so I've been told. But to protect me. But to protect modular legs, manager's like who dalits his tweet the Croatian system. So a sorcerer doesn't have to hunt the ball early in the build up, enter the youthful pairing of Guardiola and sutalo, whose fleet footed the civil Croatia to defy a high line that we saw in 2018, they play a more possession driven approach, believe it or not. And the obvious weakness in the side, lies in goal where Dominic levakovic has taken the number one shirt with some trepidation, the dinamo Zagreb keeper is only conceded 33 goals in 27 games, not bad for his club side and has to pray that inexperienced defense ahead of him will be more shield than target. Yeah, Christian has taken that tribute, roger, and he's already had t-shirts printed up in case the U.S. national team face Croatia that say, it's pronounced sick, not sick. A penultimate

"Game that can go to penalty, you're not losing the game, so for me, my job is to try to not get scored in and then you're always close to it in the game. You know, you know, I used to play goalkeeper back in the day. I mean, back back in the day, I started out as a goalkeeper. But I like the feeling of feeling like it's always on the goal. He was so difficult to be a goalkeeper. What I mean by that is you can do well, but you don't get the recognition. Let's take Thibaut corta. Ballon d'Or voting. He was 7th in the Ballon d'Or voting. You were third in the MVP voting. It's got to be difficult knowing you have to do more than everybody else to kind of get recognized as a goalkeeper. Yeah, it's tough and if you make a mistake, you know, quickly you get recognized for that. But we all know what we were signing up for. You know, as goalkeepers, you don't really get as much praise as you deserve, you know, I mean you can make 99 saves one goal goes in and you lose the game one zero. So we know what it is. You know, we know what we're signing up for and you know we just have to do it regardless and maybe sometimes you're really get the recognition that you deserve. Why is Philly been so successful this year? The culture that we have created in Philly, you know, it's a winning culture. We have a group of guys that are hungry, you know, we stay humble. We know what we want. And we just go for it. Tell me about Jim curtain. His influence on that. What's he like as a coach? He's a Philly guy. He knows what he wants. "My name is Peter Stewart. I am an engineer architect and I'm one of the two founding partners of office architects for urbanity. Our architectural studio basic Brussels Belgium. We feel that being an architect we have a big social responsibility to find solutions for complex social and ecological challenges we encounter. So the office you use stands for urbanity, which is, of course, living in a city or a village context, but also everything that comes with it. Everything that's enables people to live in this context. But most of all, also way of living together in sustainable way. So this word is quite important throughout our work because it defines what kind of projects we do, where they are located and also how we shape them. So we will always search for an added value in each of our projects, looking for sustainability as a whole with also big attention for the human scale. In 2015, design competition was launched for this co housing project this says on a plot on the edge of Louisville, a small village near Brussels, where a group of people was offered plots by the city of Levin in a ground lease, which is quite special in Belgium where most of the time you have to buy the plot to construct. But the big condition by the city was that it had to be an exemplary project for sustainable building and living. It's a bit our Belgian version of the brim, more international standards of scoring buildings on how sustainable they are. So the project itself consists of two compact housing buildings, each with 6 apartments, and also the renovation of an old cafeteria, giving his name to the project name of the cis. Now hosting also all the collective functions to the koalas projects. It was an open competition that we participated. It was actually also the start of our office we were no office yet, so it's our first project, which is also quite special. And we were chosen there because in a lot of solutions for privacy and collectivity, integration of the project within the neighborhoods and also the special attention for global sustainability. Some of the very specific design aspects is, of course, when building for a group of people who are housing group is rather different than when you build for a developer who is constructing 12 apartments without any knowledge of the future inhabitants. Now, which is really a design together with the future inhabitants that had also a very big impact on how this building came to be. They were involved quite a lot from the early start and enabling them, of course, to shape their building, their project, but they'll also confronting them with the impact of personal choices on the project as a whole. We organized several workshops first on a bigger scale, looking at the projects as a whole, how circulation would work, where the volumes would be placed, which kind of collective functions we would provide that more zooming in to what apartments was people get where they live, would it be ground floor, first floor, what shape, what's orientation, also with the question of accessibility, but really giving everybody its place in the project. And then in the end zooming in on the unit itself, how it could be designed specifically for this person. We see a growing trend in collective housing, especially cohousing projects, and I think big reason for that is the lack of available plots, of course, the lack of space. People need to live smaller. People are used to having a big house, and now they have to live smaller. But then therefore trying to find a way how to combine a smaller footprint, more compact house with the luxury of having more space. And that's why co housing is a very good solution to that by sharing certain functions like an athlete where you can work on the bike gets to room that is maybe only a few times a year being used that takes a lot of space in a private house. All these kind of elements can be shared and gives a very big quality of life to these people without having to invest on it on a private basis. I think it's also a good thing for cities to invest in these kinds of projects because it's often a struggle, cities have with keeping families in the cities. It happens a lot in Belgium, young people are living in cities because it is convenient for work. There is a lot of activity, you're very close to culture and leisure. But as soon as they get children, they move out of the city because they need different things. They need a garden for the children to play in. They need more space for the children to play or to have a children's party. And these are elements that are more difficult to find in a city context since it is very difficult to find big houses here. But with this kind of project, they can be combined. So it would be possible to stay in city context and yet have all these qualities that people look for in philosophy of the city. So I do think it is a very good tendency for people to find these new ways of living together. Peter Thibaut of office you architects there, my thanks to him.

"Com and rodge. I'm hearing this. We wrote a book apparently. We got a book. God's a soccer. The Pantheon of the hundred greatest soccer players dot dot dot according to us. It's been out in the world for 6 days and listeners your response to the book that we hope would be the ideal complement to World Cup 2022. It's been immense. Please keep sending us photos of you at the book in the indie bookstores in which you buy in it, thrills me more than I can say especially. The photos of you and your kids reading the book together. Honestly, that's why we wrote this one for those kind of cross generation memories. Yes. Thanks to illustrating the kitsch, it is a stunning, looking object with heft, but to have kids love the game in the way that you do dear listeners. That's what I hope would come from this project fills me with just profound delight to witness it. Thank you, GFP, keep spreading the word. Keep giving us 5 star reviews on Amazon, a weird quirk that takes a second and really bloody helps. And most importantly, we'll keep making great memories through football. Okay, roger and to that toast like recommendation, can we get another toast on top of it? Why raise this third first bud of the day to Karim Benzema who tonight is expected to be crowned Bologna or winner after a remarkable season in which he scored 27 goals massive goals most than one La Liga title and the Champions League, his teammate Thibaut Courtois is expected to be named top goalkeeper asterisk, not named Jordan Pickford. This on the weekend after Benzema scored in el classico, which is a rumble that's lost some of its luster in the past couple of years, but the stakes for this one were still existentially high, Barcelona have a bet the family jewels on this season right now and then crap the bed in the financially crucial Champions League almost certainly the title is now their everything in the battle against financial meltdown and Real Madrid clip them three one two go top of the table, Benzema, aged 34 became the 7th top scorer in La Liga history, 223 goals, incredible feat for a gent, who was supposed to be a one season wonder, Kareem the dream, a complex man, but his career arc has been one of tenacity and clinical to him. And there's no courage. I'd actually lost track of tonight being the Ballon d'Or announcement, roger. When you said at the top that he's getting crowned, I thought maybe he was going to get some minor European nations crown. I could imagine him being Andorra or San Marino or maybe they bring back the king of auvergne. He deserve all of it. Poor man's golden blazer. Okay, to the football roger Liverpool one Manchester City nil yet another chapter in a modern classic fixture. It began with a nervy Anfield willing strength into an injury hit backline of Andy Robertson, Joe Gomez, and sprightly 43 year old James Milner, who kept the fearsome city attack at bay in the first half, both teams lacking the cutting edge to break the deadlock in the 55th minute city had the ball in the net Phil Foden pouncing on a Harlem touch around alesson, but his celebrations were cut short, referee Anthony Taylor, spotting a foul on fabinho by Erling Haaland, who had grabbed a fistful of the Brazilian shirt like an 80s TV bully with the game heading into its final 15 minutes city, were beginning to apply the chokehold in Liverpool's final third, Allison Becker, however, had other ideas leaping, like the most handsome salmon to pluck a 76 minute KDP free kick out of the air, spotting an already streaking most Salah and launching a 70 yard kick for the Egyptian to win against a flailing zhao can sell. He bore down one on one with Edison. He curled it into cities net and filled went insane salad 6th lead goal against city, the third time he is come out of it as the match winner. Oh, a mid table team. Shocks are defending champion David. I mean, anyone can win on their day, but who saw this coming? We're honestly few of us before kick-off in this post Harlem world, a gap between two rivals that was merely one point last season seemed suddenly so seismic as Klopp entered the game only about his team. By American sports billionaires and how they couldn't cope with the long-term infinite Petro dollars of Manchester City and he may still be right. Yeah, Liverpool having a season worse than the British pound. They began in 11th place, buoyed by stomping on rangers carcass, midweek in the Champions League, 372 second hat trick from mo, he's back when he plays Scottish teams and Liverpool fans singing Klopp's name and delirious joy hoping they just witness they season turn around the fell a little bit. They were clutching at straws, but what did you expect really? As little polenta, this one with a defensive crisis injury after injury, James Miller, stepping in. It was a bit like watching Ted Williams come out of a cryogenic chamber and reinsert his head, get back into the game. Joe Gomez returning, but this is the key to erling hall and Greco, click on cleats, a team city who become to football what Mike Tyson a bid just knocking out one opponent after another in the opening seconds of the fight. Did you really think Liverpool had a chance? No. I really didn't. And shame on me for underestimating Jürgen Klopp and this Liverpool side. I loathed his pre match comments, roger. I absolutely loathe them. I don't see any point to them whatsoever. They're almost mitigating against a loss. He was almost setting himself up. As I said, I mean, the reality was, we didn't have to activate them. They just kind of hang there like a floaty. Because it was a slow burn of a star, Liverpool, content to let city do their passive passive passive thing, seeking to counter, who did a lively Harvey Elliott, huge credit to Jürgen Klopp. When we look back at this, when he chose Miller, he chose Elia, he chose Gomez and all three raised eyebrows and all three were brave, all three were focused all three were honestly magnificent, a city charged calmly and forward in those eerie fluorescent yellow jerseys tempting to move Harlan into position like a chess player thunder in their queen out the back and Liverpool flickering into the spaces in behind on the flanks. Their best chance for robo Edison stranded, but the Scot was dazzled by the lights, blasted at high and wide.

"It's hard. And they almost hit the tape. So that's pretty cool. Oh, good stuff, man. We look forward to checking that out. Max bretos. Thanks so much, man. We'll speak again soon. You guys are the best, man. What a wonderful time to spend some minutes with you here talking about the beautiful game. Andrew JJ, best of luck with everything you guys do. Thank you, brother. Let's not leave it 8 years. Don't. That's on you. I'm around. That is on us. Good stuff, man. Thanks again. Max Brett tos that was fun. That was great. Yeah, Fox soccer channel man. I couldn't believe. I mean, because I said it last week. And the tweets and the people really, I'm not surprised. It was the gateway for a lot of people to get into the game. Sounded like it was the gateway for max two. Yeah, yeah. Last bit on bail to close out this section of the podcast. Obviously, a huge part of this is the last generation of his career in Real Madrid. And one of the most complicated legacies. We've been talking about this for years now. Building up to the moment when he was one day going to leave because really I'd say for the last four years or so, there's been a point every summer where it's debated as to whether or not he was going to stick around. Is this time they're done? We're finally here now. It's over. It's truly over. So the legacy conversation can officially happen. 258 games at Real Madrid, 106 goals, 67 assists, 5 champions leagues, three La Liga titles, a Copa del Rey, I mean, the author of some of the greatest moments in the history of one of the most storied clubs on earth. This guy, so why does it still seem like though he gives off this pariah vibe around that place? Because the last few years were absolutely damaging to him. There was moments, even in you look at the 20, so we're going back four years. In the lead up to the 2018 Champions League Final where he comes off the bench and scores bicycle kick, one of the all time iconic moments in finals history are in recent finals history. He didn't know whether he'd even feature in that game. He was a bit part player for Madrid. As long ago as four years ago, so there's like the two parts to it. There's like his early entry into the club where we saw him kind of supercharge our help to supercharge that Real Madrid team that became dominant in the Champions League. And then pretty much from 2017, 2018 onward. It's fading fortunes. It was weird. It was, it was a difficulty withstand fit. It was falling out with Zidane. It was then falling out with the supporters and making public comments about them about when he played and being whistled and he didn't understand it. Then there was always there. Just behind the scenes was his, I want to say inability, I won't say it unwillingness. The fact that he didn't mesh with the culture, he didn't learn Spanish, it's a huge part of it. He didn't seem to be part of that team ethic and it was so weird to see him trooping up to get a medal for a couple of those last two, three Champions League, maybe two Champions League medals. They can't mean that much to him because he wasn't that huge apparent of that. And it was a confluence of things. I think just like I've listed there. It wasn't one thing. It wasn't just the injuries. It was a whole confluence of things together. Jack Pitt Brooke wrote about him and he wrote about all the big moments because he said he was a big moment player. And he listed all of the huge moments for Wales and Pharrell Madrid and for Tottenham. When he enumerated them, Andrew, he had an amazing career and an amazing amount of, like I said, big moments. But this is how Jack writes this paragraph which kind of sums up the other side. But there seems to be something else on the other side of the scale here. Perhaps it is an argument about consistency and reliability. Bail has always been an ultimate Mormons man. Someone who can rise to the occasion when his team needed him. But there is another site being a great player. That is being ready and able to play a weekend week out for a long period of time, and the reality of the second half of bale's career is that he fell away from being in an important or even valued player for ail Madrid. So they could function without this great talent because this great talent wasn't available a lot of the time. So. The other side as well. Apart from the lawn move to tartan mandrel, there is a sense among some supporters not like you're staying at Real Madrid to pick up this enormous check. Have you no personal pride? And I think there's two sites to that. There's this site yeah, your career is short, you should be maximizing your talents somewhere else. And the other side is Real Madrid old him that money. It's not he can't force himself into the first 11. True, that's true. But there were things. I mean, it's interesting because I think everything you touched on there is part of what makes up this full picture of how he's going to be remembered there. I saw football three 6 5 did a feature literally on this on his weird legacy. I think it was like four weeks ago, Google it. Wrote it for them. And so he starts. He starts it by saying this. He kind of helps put bail's time in Madrid in context by saying, with more goals than the Brazilian Ronaldo, more assistant David Beckham and the responsibility of numerous vital contributions towards major titles, bale should be getting carried out of the San Diego burner bell on a pedestal. But despite the thawing of their relationship and its final moments, you'd be hard pressed to find many supporters who would consider him for a place in any all time Adrian 11s, or even one made up of the best players from the 21st century. It's weird. I mean, I went through his credentials, a 106 goals, 67 assists, 5 champions leagues, and a big part of three of them. I think you'd have to say. But like the other side of it, it's a real thing. In this feature, it's a story we've talked about before, but the story that Tebow Courtois told. When the whole team went out for a late night meal, as is customary in Madrid. And only two players didn't go. It was bail and it was Tony Cruz. And for Bailey, said it's too late. I can't go. I think that story went out into the press, Thibaut Courtois told that story. There was already the background of him not speaking Spanish. Is this guy really one of us? And I think that story for a lot of people sort of crystallize, no, he's not. And so, you know, that combined, I think the money is a big part of it. It almost condemned him in the beginning before he even had a chance to kick the ball that like on that price tag, like if we're going to shell out that kind of money, if we're going to set records with what it's going to take to bring you here, you've got to be great, which for a lot of his time there he was, but that's not enough. You have to also be one of us. Like there was, you had to do it on the field and off the field. That price tag to have matched the player that they got. And he did it for a while on the field, but he never got to that level off the field. It's funny, JJ, because a lot of times when I see this stuff about bail and the way Madrid fans never really saw him as one of them. I think a lot about the city where I'm from, Philadelphia. And it's almost become like a joke, but this term is the affiliate guy. You'll get players who come through Philly that aren't good. But if they say the right things and they just like work their ass off, like, oh, he's a Philly guy, we love that guy. He gets cheered for the rest of his party on south street, eat cheesesteak. But you got guys who were like gifted with all world ability, but like, maybe they didn't just, they didn't show the effort or just like they didn't click with the fans in the right way. And so they're kind of pariahs. And I feel like you see a similar thing with bail in Madrid. It's a real thing in sports. And I seen it at home in numerous clubs where there's a guy, and I just look back and I think he wasn't even that good. But like you said, he seemed to embody or at least appear to embody the traits that the supporters like to see and therefore he gets to pass. Right. And he never did that. Also, it was there were times when, okay, they were winning in Europe, but they were maybe not going so well in the Spanish league in La Liga. And you'd see Garrett bay lean into the whales golf Madrid kind of thing. You know, he never shied away from that. In the moment where he should have kind of maybe just said,.

the streets of Warsaw to show support for the European Union That is after a controversial court verdict plunged the country to ready strained relations with a block to a new low Former European council president and opposition leader Donald Tusk did urge his supporters to protest against the ruling that rejected a pillar of EU law In Austria the new Chancellor will be sworn in today a close ally of departing conservative leader Sebastian courts Foreign minister Alexander Shaolin burger Korea diplomat takes over from courts who resigned over the weekend Courts will now try to clear himself of potential criminal charges in at least two as separate investigations And in the neighboring Czech Republic president Milos zeman has been taken to hospital in a development that may slow government negotiations after his closest ally suffered a shock election defeat To Asia one's president says the island is facing unprecedented challenges and will defend its sovereignty sigh and Wang was speaking a day after Chinese president Xi Jinping declared that a peaceful reunification with Taiwan will be achieved We hope for an easing of cross strait relations and will not act rashly But there should be absolutely no illusions that the Taiwanese people will bow to pressure The comments from both sides follow a tense week in the Taiwan strait and Singapore is considering more travel routes for vaccinated passengers after opening up to the U.S. and other key trading partners Bloomberg's Juliet Sally has more from her interview with the Singapore transport minister Singapore is gradually reopening its borders after shifting from a covert zero strategy Speaking to me on Bloomberg TV the transport minister sis Suarez said the city state is keen to work with regional neighbors including Australia New Zealand and Japan Fully vaccinated people from the U.S. the UK France and Italy can travel into Singapore quarantine free starting as early as next week Prime minister Lee xianglong is also pushing ahead with a strategy of living with the virus In Singapore Juliet Sally Bloomberg daybreak Europe Global news 24 hours a day on air and on Bloomberg quicktake powered by more than 2700 journalists and analysts and more than 120 countries and January this is Bloomberg Caroline Thank you so much Leon goes there with the world news Let's bring you a brief sports update his George alterman Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has accused footballs authorities of only caring about their pockets and not play a welfare His side suffered a two one defeat to Italy in the nation's league third place by off yesterday which he described as a money game France lifted the trophy with a two one victory over Spain in last night's final We also await in Estonia this evening as they look to stay in contention for a World Cup qualifying playoff rob page's side of level on points in second place Czech Republic in Group B after securing a two wheel draw in Prague on Friday nights Arsenal have a three point lead at the top of the wheel in Super League this morning after maintaining their 100% starts with a three mil victory over Everton champions Chelsea up to second on goal difference thanks for tuning the win against Leicester And that was George Allman with all the latest sport Now energy companies here in Britain aren't going to receive any bailouts from the government as the price can't remains in place to protect consumers from surging gas prices That all comes from the business secretary quantity but he's been squabbling with a treasury overhead handle the crisis So just how bad is it all getting Let's talk to Bloomberg energy reporter Rachel Morrison Rachel very good morning to you and thanks for being with us First of all in the wider picture how bad is the energy crunch at this point How long's it going to last Morning Yes although prices do seem to be coming off a little bit today We are still at really high levels And those don't look to be going anywhere I mean we expect prices to stay high There's nothing that's going to change particularly the supply situation And demand is only going to increase We're getting our first bout of cold weather this week particularly in the UK which makes things tighter which makes it more difficult which raises prices further And it's against that backdrop that all these things that you were describing are happening Yeah Ten energy companies in the UK have gone under since August That's again according to the minister What kinds of warnings are we getting from business I'm an increasingly desperate calls for help Is government considering any intervention some sort of dispute around this On the energy supplier side both the energy minister and off gen the regulator said they expect more companies to go under And that was the reiterated that last week And we've heard news from several companies that feel that they are in trouble The government being clear there's going to be no help for those failing companies They are prepared to let them go bankrupt And what we're seeing now is industry starting to make a lot of noise about how difficult they are finding the cost of gas at the moment And that's what the meeting was about between 5 and the energy intensive users This is the big factories and manufacturers to talk about what government could do It sounds like there was no action agreed from that meeting but quite has been quite keen to make it sound as though the dialog is ongoing and something could happen But so far no steps has been outlined by either side Yeah it sounds like the treasurer doesn't want him to say that either in terms of the ministerial dispute Rachel briefly what is the picture in Europe more widely Is it the same sort of problems as we see here in the UK Yes it is prices are just as high in Europe the storage situation is the same We had last week Europe saying that they were going to talk about joint gas purchases and a way that they could store natural gas and use it for everybody Obviously the UK would be outside of that And there are factors that make the UK situation slightly worse We have less gas storage than in Europe We are the end of the line the end of the pipeline as it were So that also makes people nervous And we have a lot of wind power and we saw this previously but the wind is low again this week which makes us reliant on gas which is expensive So it is a sort of more expensive part of the same picture Yeah very difficult moment in the UK Thanks so much Rachel for being with us Bloomberg energy reporter.

And it is one of the many the plethora of things that big fans have been, um Shopping me and shocking a bunch of former football somewhere bigger players with the last couple years of the mountain support. These these men and women showing us is unbelievable. Until Big Jim all the time that I wish more mind. Former guys. We're on social media to see the support we received from the biggest fans, man. Hell, frustrating Is it to know there's been over 50 years of Bangles football and only one bangle in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. It's crazy man is that we're so behind on that, Um, you know, for the past several years, I've been a big advocate of The big was doing something themselves, not things that bring honor. Things were kind of bring some light to it. But We're so behind. We need more man. We need more attention brought to it and I'm so thankful being with Jim and who ate nation and all the fans are doing what they're doing supporting us. Trying to get out name about their man and we all have a great career and we all deserve the attention is just No. But whatever reason, you know, bigger players haven't gotten attention. Besides no Besides Anthony Willie, do you sense there is some Mo mentum. Do you think things are heading in the right direction is more people become aware of of your career and others careers who played in the organization. I think it is, but I said no last year I know what that my name will move up to the to my family to my family. And for that, the move. It's telling me that that's coming from whoever push a guy like Jeff Hopkins started with The social media stuff I've been doing, you know, Show my games and show my showing. My two real films of You know, I can tell people that. Hey, I wanna give him 16 sacks and Should've probably made more Pro bowls, but you see it on film. The same kind of validates the points. You know where guys like, you know, Chad and Corey Guy's been putting up big numbers and and we all know about the great career, both to the kid's hat. And you know nice Montoya and guys like that so The more people talk about it, The more people get a chance to look at it. I think momentum for myself and a couple guys it moves from last year and with what I've never thought would move to that level. That could not not that I didn't deserve it. I didn't think people would take time to look at it. So, but they are looking at it so now and I'm happy about it, man and just friends. Friend of God, that great things happen for us. Then go legend Willie Anderson. Kind enough to pick up the phone tonight for a couple of minutes. The event is jungle to the hall, June 19th in Canton, Ohio. Willie, Tell everybody what you're up to. Gonna do the exact same thing the quarterback guys are doing with the quarter deck. Every position. We're trying to enhance the office line position and that one minute high school kids that we can college kids and We've got kids like Paris Johnson. Hi. This area this area. If I remember correctly, you had a chance to do some work or be around at least. Jackson. Carmen, the Bengals pick. What were your impressions of him? Jack was very smart kid man. Jackson, the kid I've known since high school, Paul if Paul is down the biggest former line coach Knight for projection Um Jackson. The kids from breakdown, um, become break down. NFL Russia's film right now, like name names of guys in that movie, So I think when, um, when the big was called me asked me should they take my favorite? Can't replay guards they give a smart football player And the covered gown will make the transition from top of the bar. All the smart guys can do that. I think you got a got a day job was smart, tough guy who? The guy bringing the mentality to offer the line played. That is the biggest one needs that he's a senator, Big guy who could move.
