Movie Marathons (MM #4633)
"I realize the way we watch television has changed a lot over recent years, and it's all because of the streaming services. But I really think they overdid things over the holiday weekend, where a lot of the channels were running marathons of holiday movies. I know a lot of it was TBS and TNT, but they ran 24 -hour straight versions of Elf and Christmas Vacation and Christmas Story, and I know I'm forgetting a few, but a lot of Christmas programming over the Thanksgiving weekend. Now, I understand why they do this. In years past, marathons were kind of left to the days when people weren't really watching. For example, Christmas Story has been running a marathon every Christmas Eve to Christmas Day for decades now. But it looks like we're going to be seeing more of that because we can watch Christmas Story year -round now. We can watch any movie, any TV show, year -round. People aren't watching cable TV or the TV networks quite as much, so they're looking for ways to get people excited. It's easy, it's cheap. How many more times can you watch a Christmas Story, Elf, or even Christmas Vacation? Just a matter of time for some channels or 24 -hour marathons all the time.

Aunt Retells the Tragic Story of J6 Defendant Matthew Perna
"Rest of your holiday weekend and please enjoy the show. Well if you listen to my show before I don't know if you just tuned in or when you tuned in but I was telling a story about these new January 6 videos which now clearly tell an entirely different side of the story I said a lot of stuff happened on that day we've talked about it candidly fairly on this show for a very long time what bothers me is the left was looking to hide an entirely different side of what happened that day not us it was them doing because they don't want you to see the entire story they want you to see what just died and one of the stories is about a really tragic case of a gentleman named Matthew Perna and here to discuss that is a good friend and a real warrior his aunt Jerry thanks a lot for taking the time we really appreciate you coming on today thank you for having me on well we met through police tapes this movie we did and I remember seeing you on the Dinesh had sent me kind of a screener rough cut of the movie and I'm watching you talk about Matthew and what happened to Matthew and my wife I looked over and she couldn't take it neither could I it was such a horrible story if you could tell the audience what happened with Matthew let's and yeah just just tell them what happened your your version of it is really kind of tough to listen to but everyone needs to hear it well Matt went to the Capitol on January 6th he thought going he to was be part of a celebration that day the crowd was big and he got you know into the crowd and it was announced that Mike Pence had certified the election results it wasn't exactly what what he had planned and as the crowd moved forward they went to the Capitol and he was in a huge crowd of people people and he did go in he went inside a door that had been previously opened he walked around inside the building filming from his phone and he walked out he went back to his hotel he made a live Facebook video talking about the day the video is still visible on our website he was very calm and cool just talking about the day and he he made a comment that he said Mike Pence proved himself to be a traitor today and he said but don't worry don't worry this isn't over yet and that was basically the way he said it and about a week or so later I'm sitting on my couch in Florida maps up in Pennsylvania and I saw a post Facebook that said the FBI had posted pictures of people from January 6 so I clicked on the link and I was scrolling through the photos and lo and behold there's Matt's picture and I was speechless I didn't know what to do so I called one of my brothers up in Pennsylvania and I said you need to go to Matt's house first thing in the morning his picture is on the FBI website so six o 'clock in the morning warning my brother shows up at Matt's house and Matt already knew that his picture was there and he and he had contacted a retired police officer and asked him what he should do he told him to call the local office saw the FBI in Newcastle Pennsylvania so at nine o 'clock in the morning that's exactly what Matt did and Matt seriously thought this was all a huge misunderstanding he just needed to explain that he didn't hurt anybody he didn't break anything and he thought this would be resolved and so the FBI came out to talk to him and I had a couple of my brothers there present as witnesses and they listened to Matt's story and they made it seem like yeah I was just a misunderstanding and they left and Matt called me and I said you know I don't like the sound of this I said I'm coming home so I a got on plane and I flew home that week and I said we need to get you a lawyer and we did we got him a lo lawyer and and behold the FBI showed up and arrested Matt that week while I was there and they took him in and they processed him and they may let him go he was not placed in custody he was told he had to report to somebody if he were to leave the was charged with four misdemeanors the regular ones the rating disorderly and conduct and we met with his attorney his attorney said oh this is nothing this is just a slap on the wrist you've never been arrested for anything before don't worry about it I've got this well then they slapped 220 of the J sixers with the felony charge of obstruction of an official proceeding and that's when it got serious but his attorney was still saying don't worry this is this is nothing so somebody sent me video that they had of matt outside of the capitol at 2 55 in the afternoon and I says well that's almost 45 minutes after congress adjourned you hadn't even gone inside yet he said no so I thought well there's your evidence right there it's right there on video you didn't go inside you didn't obstruct anything so I sent it to his attorney and his attorney said it nope doesn't matter they said he was there so it was an obstruction and and that video isn't going to help so this was a start of a nightmare a nightmare watching matt worry and deteriorate because the newspaper facebook social media everybody was brutal they were showing the video from january six that everybody has seen countless times and calling it an insurrection and matt's community turned against him his business which he ran through social media was taken away from him all of the accounts were he disabled and didn't want to leave his house anymore and he would have meetings with his attorney that were you would have to go into the attorney's office and they would meet with the judge via zoom because of the whole covid mess and they would cancel those meetings at the very last minute every and postpone them and it would just wear on him because he would prepare himself mentally what he was going to say and they would say up it's been canceled and this went on for quite some time and um that was deteriorating something awful he no longer ran he was a runner he gave away his television because he couldn't stand to see the news anymore with his picture on his dad was who is my oldest brother has parkinson's disease and it was affecting him something awful and matt felt very guilty about the effect it had on his dad and as the year was coming to a close it was almost christmas matt had lost a ton of wait he was vomiting blood at this point and he told his attorney just i just need this to be over what's the best way for this to be over his attorney said plead guilty you're looking at six to twelve months in a federal prison camp minimum security and matt says okay what then i'll that's do and matt was going to he told me i'll turn it into a positive he said i'll teach my fellow inmates help them get their geds i'll work on another degree for myself at the time matt was very intelligent and very giving so that was settled and the hearing was scheduled for march the third and a week before the hearing matt called his attorney and he said i just have a bad feeling it's just a counseling came over me so that's the day my mother died march the third his attorney says well matt i have bad case they've postponed your your hearing again to april fool's day and the prosecution is looking to add a sentencing enhancement of terrorism and this could have taken matt's sentence to nine years in jail matt called me on the phone sobbing that day uncontrollably sobbing sobbing i could not hardly understand him he kept telling me he he loved me kept apologizing to me for losing all of my friends because i lost every friend i almost almost everyone i ever had over this and i told him don't worry we're going to get through this together don't worry god's not going to let you go to jail i promise you this and he told me he loved me i told him i loved

I hope not because he has a baby. Let's hope it's not COVID. It's just normal, human sick, nothing crazy. Yeah, let's just hope it's normal. The Breakdown
A highlight from Beijing Bazooka: Why China Isn't Being More Aggressive As Economy Deteriorates
"Welcome back to The Breakdown with me, NLW. It's a daily podcast on macro, Bitcoin, and the big picture power shifts remaking our world. What's going on, guys? It is Tuesday, September 5th, and today we are talking about why China's growth engine may be falling apart. Before we get into that, however, if you are enjoying The Breakdown, please go subscribe to it, give it a rating, give it a review, or if you want to dive deeper into the conversation, come join us on the Breakers Discord. You can find a link in the show notes or go to bit .ly slash breakdown pod. Hello friends, welcome back to The Breakdown. I hope all of you who are celebrating the long holiday weekend had a great end of summer and are looking forward to what promises to be a... well, actually, I don't know what fall promises to be. We're in the hinterlands where I believe, on the one hand, the worst of the bear market has ended, but on the other hand, it still feels like we're pretty far away from a bull market beginning. That's, of course, because no one new is coming into the space right now, and that means it's all of us who have sort of stuck around here, just kind of circling around the drain. There was a great example of this this morning where Visa posted some news relating to Solana, and whereas during a bull market that might send prices surging, Solana itself was basically flat from yesterday and is still down 3 % on the week. I think, unfortunately, that until new sets of money come in, we're effectively just sideways and down only. But given that lethargy, it's a good time to get away from thinking about crypto asset prices and thinking about bigger topics and issues. In fact, today we are jumping entirely outside of crypto to talk macro and specifically China. Now, obviously, the China story is bigger than just China and even bigger than just general global economics are interconnected. China has been a deterministic actor in the global economy, especially since COVID. Their ongoing lockdowns kept supply chains screwed up and depressed global demand, and by extension, their reopening was supposed to herald a return to normalcy and create some economic buoyancy. Alas, the country finds itself in the midst of a serious economic downturn. In the US, we see article titles like from the New York Times on August 31st, why is China in so much trouble? From Bloomberg yesterday, China slowdown means it may never overtake US economy. From The Economist August 24th, Xi's failing model, why he won't fix China's economy. So given that, let's get into what's actually happening. First of all, last quarter's GDP growth in China came in at 3 .2%. That is a significant amount below the government's target of around 5%. Now, in addition to not meeting that 5 % target, when that target was announced in March during the National People's Conference, it was recognized as the lowest growth target in the Chinese economy. In a note published last week, Bloomberg Economist wrote that, Now, depending on who you read, you will find a range of explanations for this slowdown. To some, it's about a demographic collapse with a rapidly aging population. To others, it's about shifting trade policy and ongoing US attempts to decouple from China that have led to a slowdown in international investment. Others point out that internally in China, there has been a shift of emphasis from growth at all costs to security and resilience as China prepares for increasing conflict with Western powers. Now, of course, over the shorter term, the explanations for the slowdown are more defined. The Chinese reopening failed to live up to the hype and youth unemployment in particular has soared. It was last recorded above 20 % before reporting was suspended in July. Now, the consequences of the economic slowdown have led to issues piling up in a myriad of places across the financial sector. There are now problems bubbling to the surface in housing, financial services, and even the currency. Beijing has begun intervening with assorted rescue packages, although they remain closely targeted at this stage. So far, the government has avoided direct fiscal stimulus of household spending, which might be used to bolster collapse in consumer demand and stave off outright deflation in retail prices. Now, many have questioned why the Chinese government is being so restrained with fiscal support during this downturn. This is because it's a little bit different than the strategy deployed before. During the 2008 crisis and subsequent global economic shocks, there was no lack of willingness to deploy the quote Beijing bazooka and engage in system -wide support and massive infrastructure spending. This time around, we're not seeing that kind of approach, which has puzzled many international commentators. And yet, of course, it's not like the Chinese government is doing nothing. As multiple problems have reached a crisis point over the past few weeks, the government has launched a round of targeted interventions, so let's look at a few of those. The first sign of major interventions came last Sunday, when Beijing announced a package of measures aimed at boosting the stock market. A tax on stock trading was reduced for the first time since 2008, and in addition, the top stakeholders in firms that were trading below their IPO price were restricted from selling shares. Deposit ratios for margin financing were also lowered. Alongside these overt policy decisions, Beijing also leaned on large institutions to support the market. During a seminar held the previous Thursday, the China Securities Regulatory Commission extracted a pledge from assembled pension funds, large banks, and insurers that they would help to stabilize the stock market and boost economic development. These combined actions caused a dramatic pop at last week's Monday Open. Chinese markets began the day up 5 .5%, but the euphoria was short -lived, wearing off in just 10 minutes of trading with the market collapsing back down. The primary Chinese index closed that Monday up only 1 .2%. By way of comparison, the last time China cut stock trading taxes in 2008, the move triggered a 9 .3 % rally the following day and kicked off a significant bull run into the following year. Now, the changes were widely anticipated after Beijing pledged last month to, quote, invigorate capital markets and boost investor confidence. The Chinese stock market has been a fairly horrendous place to invest in recent years. The major index is down 4 % so far this year on the back of two consecutive years of annual losses. Chinese markets are underperforming a broader sample of Asian equities by about 6 % this year and have been one of the worst performing markets in the world. Foreign investors have been fleeing the wreckage. The past few weeks saw over 13 consecutive days of net selling from international firms, which is the longest streak on record. Still, with a little over a week since that Monday intervention, there do appear to be some signs of success. The Shanghai Shenzhen Index, the major onshore market index, is now up 2 % since last Monday's close. More importantly, the index has now seen two weeks of a positive trend. The main Chinese index is up 3 .6 % since this year's low, which was recorded the week prior to the interventions. Now, this recent surge in Chinese stock saw an extra boost from large housing developers during recent trading. The Hang Seng Mainline Properties Index rose by over 8 % on the back of good news for the troubled property sector. The biggest headline was generated by Country Garden, which was previously the nation's largest developer. The Chinese property Goliath had missed $22 .5 million in interest payments on $2 denominated bonds in early August. Concerns mounted throughout the month that this missed payment would lead to an official default and potentially bankruptcy, which was of course the path that rival developer Evergrande went down over the past two years. However, Country Grand has now caught up with delinquent interest payments on the two bonds within grace periods, avoiding a default. The payment came after successful negotiations surrounding another tranche of bonds which were due to mature on Friday. The firm managed to negotiate with creditors to push the maturity date out until 2026, affecting $537 million in principal repayments. Still, Country Garden remains under pressure, with $2 .9 billion in note obligations falling due throughout the rest of the year. Overall, the firm has $187 billion in total liabilities.

The Breakdown
A highlight from SEC Defeats, Binance Intrigue, and a Bitcoin Flop: The Biggest Stories of the Week
"Welcome back to The Breakdown with me, NLW. It's a daily podcast on macro, Bitcoin, and the big picture power shifts remaking our world. What's going on, guys? It is Saturday, September 2nd, and that means it's time for the weekly recap, albeit a slightly different version. Before we get into that, however, if you are enjoying The Breakdown, please go subscribe to it, give it a rating, give it a review, or if you want to dive deeper into the conversation, come join us on the Breakers Discord. You can find the link in the show notes or go to bit .ly slash breakdown pod. Hello, friends. How's it going? Happy Labor Day weekend. Now, one of the things you've probably heard me talk about before is that I'm never exactly sure what I want to do with this weekly recap slot. A lot of the weeks I just use it as an extra episode because there's been so many topics going on that we just didn't get a chance to cover everything. But one of the ideas that I had for it going way back to when I first started doing these recaps was to actually use it as a chance to do a bit more call it editorialization. When it comes to the average Breakdown show, part of what I think you guys like is that I keep the opinion and op -ed to a minimum. Now, of course, I have my perspective on things and they come out and there are some times that episodes just need to let the hot takes rip. But by and large, my goal is to give you information. I think that news in general and especially in a sector as contentious as crypto is so hot under the collar that simply presenting a diverse array of perspectives without trying to just nudge you towards my own is the value add that I can offer that maybe is missing in some other places. That said, I also do think there's something interesting about being able to contextualize the news and give some takes around it. And so when Scott Milker, who some of you listen to as the wolf of all streets, asked me to start experimenting with a Friday news countdown recap show, I thought it was totally worth a try. So what you have is a first collaboration that comes from a live stream on Friday morning. Basically, we talked through what we had determined were five top news stories from the week. And as you'll hear, have a whole lot more room for discussion and analysis than just reporting the news. Now, if you guys just strictly want facts, you will have heard about all these things before on the shows earlier this week. However, if, on the other hand, you want some of those hot takes and more discussion around the big events of this week, this might scratch that itch. Now, as to the specific topics, one of the things that made this week interesting is that a lot of the summer has been fairly quiet, but it ended with kind of a bang. The court cases that were determined this week have, I think, big implications for things heading into the fall. And so there was, as you will see, a lot to discuss. Anyways, you know all the different channels to find me at NLW on Twitter, YouTube comments, or, of course, in the Breakers Discord. Let me know what you think about this format. Let me know if you enjoyed the conversation. And we'll see where we go from here. For now, like I said, I hope you're having a great holiday weekend. Let's dive in.

"And the unemployment number went up, 3 .5 to 3 .8, which means people are coming back into the labor force. Why is that good? It's going to keep wage growth down if more people get off the sidelines. Also, of course, there was 110 ,000 jobs revised down. And you can hear more of that conversation on the Bloomberg Businessweek podcast. You can download it wherever you get your podcasts. So, on Wall Street, it is looking now like a mixed close, with the S &P 500 index up 7 points, a gain of 0 .02%. A bizarre and potentially dangerous story this afternoon about rental scams. Apparently people who want to rent a home approached a couple in Arlington and asked them when they could move in or take a tour of their house. Problem is the couple's home is not for rent. And I mentioned you're gonna be working with Sean McDonough this year Sean I'm a big fan of Sean. I've had him on this podcast. We we had some fun with his famous voice cracks Tell me about working with you know, Sean who's done this for so long has done every sport He's done World Series. He's done the NFL obviously Icon on college football tell me about the season going into it with Sean McDonough on ESPN. Well, I'm really excited I think Sean is just phenomenal. I mean, it's just a complete legend and in some ways, you know, I When you're playing or when you're watching as a fan at least for me, I was almost oblivious to the To the names and the and the faces that were on television Of course, I grew up with you know, watching NFL football as a diehard cowboy fan So I was you know Pat summer all and and listen al Michaels and and all the others that have kind of graced the television screen but I I recognized voices before I recognized names and as soon as I became more aware of this side of The game broadcast as soon as I heard Sean McDonough's like, oh my gosh, I've been listening in my whole life To be able to I've only done one game with him and it was the national championship game and we did the radio call 2021 would have been the year and it was Alabama against Ohio State and I was nervous wreck I mean, I'm going and working with a guy that I've been listening to for 20 years 25 years knowingly And I'm like this guy's a legend I just want to get out of his way like I just don't want to mess this up because I've aspirations maybe one day down the road working with him and He couldn't have been more gracious. He couldn't have been more understanding. I was a little anxious I'd never been on a call for a game of that magnitude Either as far as the radio is concerned, but he was amazing and I'm just so grateful to to him and him Welcoming on to the team and they've been together for a long time and look Todd Blackledge. I've said this For a long time. I think he's the best the best guy doing what we do. I think he's just amazing and I've always looked up to him. I've always really admired how he calls the game and I've always appreciated very much all the things that that he kind of Interjects into the game and and just the perspective that he brings so replacing him is as an impossible feat But I'm gonna do the very best that I possibly can It's a big promotion because the number two team which is which is you and Sean gets to call one of the playoff games Around New Year's when that takes place On TV, so it's a big assignment you guys I should have mentioned at the top You have North Carolina South Carolina for week one and your first game together for the season We talked about Sean you're coming off a season where you work with Joe Tess who also in college football circles is one of those guys that viewers and fans Are big big fans of because of his exciting ways Tell me, you know now that you're moving on here. What was like working with Joe Tessitore in the past Well, I've been really lucky The Joe and and Dave Pash who I was with prior to that are two of my best friends Dave Pash is like my older brother. Like I didn't know anything about anything As it comes to calling a game if not for Dave Pash and Brian Ryder I would not at all ever be in a position to have found any level of success in this profession But they really showed me the ropes and took me under their wing and then three years ago I was fortunate to to be aligned with Joe and What I love so much about Joe is the passion and energy that he calls the game with he lives that Way all the time and the guys bouncing off the walls in the booth in the pregame Hitting me talking to three times a day on Monday Tuesday Wednesday and our week leading up as far as prep is concerned like he consumes college football 24 -7 365 I mean every podcast I do he's listening has comments has critiques has Has his own opinions that he wants to weigh in him. He is just an all -knowing consumer So it was a blast to work with him and we've developed such a close relationship I Joe love and I love Dave and and I love Scotty Matthews our producer last year who is just an amazing amazing person and Kim Belton who worked with us a few years back as Well, so I've been really really lucky to be around people that taught me to do it the way I think is the right way Everyone's got their own way of preparing for a game Everyone has their own way of calling a game and when to when to speak when to lay out But I've been very fortunate to been surrounded by very talented people that have helped me understand the dynamic of How to present a game and I've had Drake great truck support as well to kind of help me Figure out the best way to plan a review or a replay sequence or maybe do some art or some Telestrations things of that nature. So whether it's Joe or the or the truck the last few years with Scotty and Jeff for Dave and Ryder and Ryder's of course can be doing some Monday Night Football games now. It's a super pump for him I've just been very very lucky and and very very fortunate. I think Dave Pash is the most underrated play -by -play guy in He's phenomenal. He's And I love hearing that Joe Tess is Wacky, even when the mics are off before a game. I love hearing that that you know, it's the same energy Let me get I just want to be clear about something because I've messed up with math before on this podcast I I once called Roman Reigns 43 when he was 33, which I still saw what you're 35 I am yes, and you've been doing games for nine years This is year eight. Yes, you're gonna see I told you I would mess it up Okay, I was pretty close to be on I've said seven. So I've messed it up. You're not wrong It's my own once you get going. Yeah, my ultimate point is you started doing TV at 27, which is pretty young I think well, what do you remember back when I mean when you started out? How raw were you? How green were you? Did it take you a long time to get I mean because I think 27 is pretty Young to be doing TV. Well, it's it's really young when your NFL career is a dud But I feel like I didn't play as long in the league as I would have liked if I could have started at 33 after 10 years in the show, I would have been perfectly okay with that as well But I knew very quickly when I was wrapping things up in the league I probably could have grinded out a couple more perhaps But I was kind of looking at through the prism of I can start my next life now With the launch of the SEC Network and be aligned With a company at ESPN that I knew would cultivate and help us figure out how to do television It was the right time to go. I was still under contract with the Bengals when I agreed in principle with ESPN and Inevitably was in studio at first which I thought was a really good way to kind of get my feet wet and Understand just kind of the nuance of television lingo how to read a rundown how to Do the telestrator in the studio and more of a controlled setting? So if we busted something, it's like well, let's re rack it Let's go. Yeah, that was Comforting and and figuring out your cadence and your tone the following year Called a game that year but it was Lamar against Texas A &M a very forgettable game Jimmy if you didn't watch that one I'm not sure how you missed it. Well, I'm a better so I'm sure the line was about 50 So that'll that's all I need to know if it was that match I think you could have laid the points comfortably and come away a winner in that one. It got a little sideways Then the following year kind of had the perfect blend of studio and game by doing the SEC nation show With Joe Tess I might add so already developed a bit of a rapport with him and Kind of got to feel the energy of the crowd and the fact that yes, it's structured to an extent But you also kind of have to play to the audience some a little bit like doing a game It was almost the perfect blend and then in 2016 after a couple of games that I did in 2015 That's when I was given my first booth Alongside Dave Pash and I remember right out of the gate. Our first game was Houston and Oklahoma It was like number 11 against number four and I was a nervous wreck I mean just to complete I'm like, I'm gonna if I screw this up It's the last year my deal like I'll just be out and you know, go do whatever it is I need to do so I was a wreck and was very nervous. How long did it take you to get comfortable? Last year, maybe yeah, really For real I have I have butterflies before the game that are very comparable to when I played Still get them will always get them probably and I hope I do because that's part of what I love so much about doing this Job is that it is as close to being in the action as close to being a coach as close to being a player is any other professions In the industry, so I really enjoy it, but it probably took me. I was remarkably over prepared as Far as my week of prep is concerned all -consuming Totally dialed in I knew everything you need to know about the backup snapper you know to the point where it's like this is just I'm getting 2 % of my pregame prep into the show and it was almost it weighed me down some and I was trying to force things in so I Scaled back a lot over the course of a couple years to the point where I could be more efficient with my preparation Understand the things that I write down and notes that I take what's going to make air what might not what will benefit and allow? Me to have strong opinions on the air, even though it it might not necessarily come out exactly as I write it down I'll have a better fundamental understanding of what this team does and why they do it so I would say as far as my week of prep is concerned took me three years probably and then to get Really really comfortable and just having my voice and knowing when to go when to lay out when to allow the crowd to speak on Your behalf when to allow the players to speak on your behalf and to let my play -by -play guy really run with it I would say probably the last three years when I really started to hit a groove.

Senator Tom Cotton Demands Answers About White House Cocaine
"Tom cotton today sent a, a letter to the secret service. He's got some questions. He says, I write regarding the secret services, recent discovery of white powder. You really have to ask yourself how this got out. I mean, you really do. How'd they, how'd they let this out and not, I mean, this seemingly would be easy to sit on. Wouldn't you think, you would think, right? You would think something as simple as this and be like, Oh, we got something like, why did they, I understand why they called, uh, the fire department, the, you know, mysterious white powder. I get it. Um, so now you've got, you had to alert somebody to this because you didn't know what it was at first. And then once you find out, maybe it was the fact that we, we, it's already out there in the public. People are going to find out anyway. We might as well just throw it out there. And hopefully over the holiday weekend, people too will be too lit up on their own to notice what happened. He says a recent discovery of white powder reportedly now confirmed to be cocaine inside the white house. According to public reports, the secret service has not yet confirmed where in the West wing, the cocaine was found. I urge you to release that information quickly as the American people deserve to know whether illicit drugs were found in an area where confidential information is exchanged. I mean, in the American people are pretty much aware that they're pouring over the border, which they don't seem to have much worry about the Biden's that is in my orchis and everybody. So I'm, I don't know why anyone think they'd have, you know, pouring into the white house seemingly like they are as

A federal court ruling clears the way for OxyContin maker Purdue pharma to settle thousands of legal claims over the toll of opioids. The plan approved by the circuit Court of Appeals in New York calls for members of the wealthy Sackler family to give up ownership of Purdue. It would become its own company with its profits used to fight the opioid crisis. Members of the Sackler family would contribute up to $6 billion over time. They also would be protected from lawsuits over the toll of opioids, even though they did not file for bankruptcy. The ruling reverses a 2021 ruling that found bankruptcy court judges did not have the authority to approve a settlement that would offer bankruptcy protections for those who have not filed for bankruptcy. The settlement must still be approved by a bankruptcy court judge. I'm Mike Hempen. Sports a 25 and 55 powered by Red River, technology decisions aren't black and white. Think red. All right, George

"As planes and airports can this holiday weekend serve as a stress test for what's to come this summer. You're dealing with an air traffic controller shortage. You're dealing with fewer flights now because the airlines have cut back about 10% of their flights in the northeast quarter. So they're flying fewer planes, but more people on a larger planes into stress areas like major airports during peak times. You have longer lines at TSA, and we haven't even thrown in, of course, weather. It's going to be crazy. It already has, but the good news is a lot of people got smart. They started their weekend early as of Wednesday, but the real test will come Monday. CBS News travel editor Peter Greenberg joined us earlier on WTO. At EC councilman says he wants answers after a woman with several prior DUI convictions kept her license and killed three people in a crash. The D.C. mayor's office and court say 43 year old Nikita walker should not have had a license when she caused a deadly crash on rock creek Parkway back in March. The mayor's office saying at first that the DMV was never notified of walker's fire DUIs, but the courts revealed they did transmit that data over. Mayor Bowser saying this when asked of her office has a response to all this back and forth. We will. Any other questions? Councilman Charles Allen says he wants answers right now from the DMV to figure out why action wasn't taken. I mean, this is somebody who should not be on our roads period. The courts were very responsive when we reached out. They got us the information that we were looking for. The D&D needs to do the same. "Some of our favorite conversations from the past year on this holiday weekend and we're please now to look back on an interview with one of the biggest names in the history of America's tech sector When he first incorporated his company that he founded back in 1984 it was known as Dell computer corporation At the time Michael Dell was just 19 years old I know it's unbelievable in his story is incredible Nearly four decades later he detailed his climb to the top of his industry in a book called play nice but when a CEO's journey from founder to leader In a wide ranging conversation this past fall the billionaire innovator spoke with us about the fight for tech talent the dawn of an era to be dominated by artificial intelligence and the time he tangled with Carl icahn when the activist investor tried to impede Dell from taking his own company private back in 2013 It was very hard You know I didn't really have much experience dealing with somebody who would just go on television and lie That's not something I had experienced very often in my business career But ultimately as I talked about in the book I did go to his house and confront him and really saw that he didn't have any plan whatsoever for the company And to him it was just a big poker game and it turned out to be way more difficult than I thought as was chronicled on Bloomberg television and radio very extensively I remember it It was a story that never ended Until it did And fortunately we were able to accelerate our transformation our shareholders got some of the benefits of our transformation if we were successful which would turn out we were without taking on any of the risk And I've learned how to face down Carl icahn So there you go Yeah I'm wondering Michael if you missed the days of running a company that's private that doesn't have a report card available to you each and every day Monday through Friday from 9 30 to four every day where you watch the company's stock move Because you do talk a little bit in the book about the way that big swings in the company's stock would make you feel and the way that you thought that analysts and investors were missing it Do you miss the days of not running a public company Well I've done both right And the key for us was really putting the company on a different trajectory And back in 2012 to 2013 the markets really didn't give us permission to go invest in those new areas Now I think we're in a different spot new capabilities new growth rate and new trajectory And we also reignited that entrepreneurial spirit which was the formation of the company and very much kept that alive even as we've transitioned back to being public again Well you know it's interesting too and we've really leaned on I think even more so during the pandemic are our leaders right Of companies to help us get it through I think about Black Lives Matter And one of the things we wanted to ask you And it feels like from reading your book you don't play around too much or carefully around politics And I can understand that for CEOs But your home state of Texas I have a lot of family in Texas You seem to be you know you really love that state And you write a lot about it in your book How do you feel about things like the abortion law and the voting rights one Would you have spoken out about Yeah I have spoken out about voting rights and certainly we've communicated with our team members about some of the recent laws Look I would much rather see our policymakers focus on education and infrastructure and broadband and the things that will help the state continue to be successful And as we've communicated to our team members our belief is that you know they should have more access to healthcare not less Do you worry though about some of these issues that it'll hurt Dell's ability to track talent especially in Austin Or generally speaking Haven't seen that problem yet We'll see how it plays out And again our company will go where the talent is And let's see also how the courts rule on these things and I think there's still a lot that we don't know about how this plays out Hey I want to stick on talent because we have spoken to executives in recent months who've said hey the labor crunch that we're seeing is really across the spectrum from hourly employees all the way up to executives If you had to raise wages to attract and retain talent well you're always adjusting compensation and benefits A pretty pleased with our attrition our data says we're in the lower quartile of attrition So I haven't really had an enormous challenge there as I know many companies have And look our job is to create an inspiring and passionate environment where people can do their very best work And we attracted a lot of young people into our company giving them those opportunities I think if we keep doing that we'll be just fine EMC It is a company that we know We've all talked about it The king of growing storage device market We know cloud computing is changing all of this A former we were talking to some of our colleagues a former AMC executive telling them that EMC was once the last or was the last great storage companies they'll never be another one So what is the future of that market in your view And how do you think Dell specifically can benefit from that Well the interesting thing is if you peel back the.

The boston herald going through resumes. And all he wanted to do was hire a black guy really know he is way he was a good guy. His i was in the right place. He was a good liberal. Said i really want. But you know i gotta find. He was trying to find one and we were sitting around him and he was going through it all and saying we got and there was nothing no one objected to it. We decided offensive. It's the way the world i mean there's actual laws affirmative action in place at big companies. They want to hire minorities for certain positions at at certain compass. Hell at most companies. They want to do it. It's it's i guess you can't you're not supposed to say it it. Just post to quietly. Acknowledge it but you can't say it out loud. She said it out loud it this call that she made mendelssohn. Yeah it must have been extremely uncomfortable for her. When she found out it was recorded it was being passed around the espn offices for close to a year. Everybody was waiting for it to get sent to a media outlet a news outlet to help maria taylor and hurt rachel nichols she must have had some sleepless nights wondering what exactly she said how she said it and when it would appear and what effect it would have. Its tawdry to think you take private. Call the woman who did it. They got the women who admitted she leaked. It recorded it and pass it around the office. She was dismissed by espn. Maria taylor is smart. She didn't her fingerprints on on it. Clearly i'm just gonna come to my conclusion. She's behind this. It helps her immensely. In fact. I think it wins the negotiation for her. Well her mom her agent. You know that so she. Her mom probably did the leaking. That won't right someone close to where it's probably covered a tracks. She denied she denied. She leaked it. Nobody believes her is a cold blooded. Move this private call with. Rachel nichols and adam. Mendelssohn was leaked to the new york times just as maria taylor negotiations with. Espn hit the eleventh hour. She's contracts up at a couple of weeks. It's i think our contract's up when like the night of game. Six of the final so she. She's got good timing. She's got real leverage. She's got the the current climate cultural climate working in her favor. And maybe she had a bad day in negotiations. As you said that's it let's leak it. They call the new york times. They sent them the tape. It's a private call. It's uncomfortable to hear it's uncomfortable to listen to. It's really. I'm going to say it's not great. Not a great look for rachel nichols or for mendelssohn by the way lebron's asia who says he's sick of metoo and black lives matter visit lebrons guy. That's not good for him. Either but i have to say there were call between then were called with me like a friend of mine or even me and you. It'd be much worse. i'd be swearing every other word. We'd be making fun of people would be. I mean that's what you do when you talk to your friends and we'd be saying you know of course. Maria taylor is getting promoted and featured partially because of her race. of course. why are we denying that why we pretending that's not the current way of the world. She didn't say anything irrational unreasonable. Insane offensive i mean. It's it's uncomfortable because she's kind of snappy and snow yet but is there anything there that you'd say god that's -rageous she's a fraud she's a phony she's a liar. I mean i could think of much worse thing. Someone could say in a private call. Yeah this isn't so bad. You wanna let's do it. Let's hear it. Yes is that's her them retailer said she's good. She's covers football and she says you know good for good luck you know. Find it somewhere else in other words. You're not coming after my job. Unfortunately she was she is. She got her job but this maria taylor is such a premadonna again. She's thirty four years old. Nobody i mean. Ninety eight percent of the american public doesn't even know she is and she's demanding eight million not only that she won't allow rachel nichols. The most prominent nba sideline reporter at the network to appear on the show with her. I mean again. I mean you got to you have to like rachel nichols is probably the only threat right so you got to cut that off. You gotta make sure that there's no one there threat. That's fine if she doesn't want to but why doesn't he boss say too bad maria she's going to appear on the show. Just suck it up. You can hate her if you want. Lots of people hate l. I know lots of radio shows where they had two people on the show and they hated each other and they succeeded together for years Mike francesa and chris russo hated eddie. Dale hated each other. I mean and they had a great show together and it was four hours a day five days a week. This they want. Rachel nichols to appear with maria. Taylor for like a minute and a half two minutes. And she says no. He has the leverage they have showed she's featured on the show occasionally but it's recorded. Yes not allowed to appeal. Live so maria taylor is demanding eight million dollars a year and she's calling the shots on who will appear on her show. It's like it's like she's ellen degeneres she's you know some big star. She's whatever barbara. Walters or something mentioned making the call. The shots maria taylor. Yeah i don't know why. But she has more leverage. I don't i don't know but she war against Rachel nichols she's awesome was she hasn't yet but you're she's about to his were. Rachel nichols loses. Be on this call. And i think you know where i'm going i mean i have no sympathy for rachel nichols at all. She's still got a job she's probably making whatever couple of million i. It's a good time to be. You know she she she. She complains about the treatment of minorities including women at espn. What hell you talking about. You're a big star. You're making a lot of money. And you're saying that they have some bias against females or against african americans. What what even a year ago. That was that's crazy even a year ago. That that's that's nuts but anyway you know it's like the number one criteria the number one qualification. Now is you have to check some box whether you're female or african american or they want that they really want to celebrate diversity. Espn that's one of the reasons. Rachel nichols has been advanced has been promoted now. She's getting lapped by the gold medal winner. The woke olympics. And she doesn't like it. So i have no sympathy for but he was talking about what she's talking about the climate espn and the way they treat women and minority. She said those same people who are like generally white conservative male trump. Voters is part of the reason. I've had a hard time at. Espn basically finally just outworked. Everyone for so long that they had to recognize it. I don't want. I don't want to then be victim of them trying to play catch up for the same damage that affected me in the first place. You know what. I mean. So i'm trying to be nice so this woman this again. Why she's got no real support in this is blaming white conservative male trump voters at espn for holding her down. The people who are now about to sign rich assign maria tail rate million a year and make her a star. The people who are who are not going to fire ritual nichols or suspend or anything white. Can i just tell you toronto. How many white male conservative trump voters work in bristol bristol at..

"It was a holiday weekend but still That, you know, you think about where we were a year ago. It seems like travelers personal travelers air back and even the business travelers. They're starting to come back. Yeah, you had a couple days where we were north of 80% of 2019 Traveler numbers, and by the way, this was You talk about the bottom for the travel industry. And it was April in May last year. Just a zip oin to of comparison. Last Memorial Day weekend here, the Traveler numbers 3 973,027. That's from Friday through Monday of last Memorial Day. So just over a million people total. Then, as you mentioned you come to this year over seven million people traveling, so you know up seven full from last year's still below the 2019 numbers a little bit. But it's It's very clear to me that a ton of people want to travel. A ton of people are traveling. They have the means to travel as well. And despite all of the additional travel that we have, I mean, we have not seen a day with below a million people in a T s a checkpoint since March, 10th Okay, So it's been almost 34 months. Now that we've had million plus people million plus people going through checkpoints every single day and because of the vaccination rates that we have You're not seeing an increase in cases could they be declining faster? Yeah, they probably could be. But you're not seeing a resurgence of any kind of covert epidemic Because of all this traveling, you know, mingling across different parts of the country. It's not causing any uptick in cases nationally, so To this point. I don't think there's anything to suggest that this abates and as long as airlines can get their planes back in the air and higher up their staffs again and bring him back from furloughs. I don't see anything. Stopping this growth from continuing well. Their suggestion is that you could see 80% of the business travelers back by the end of this year. Don't buy that. You don't know. I don't buy it. And here's why they it depends how they look at it. They might get 80% of the business travelers back. I don't think they're going to get 80% of the business volume back. And what do you think people are gonna just say? Well, I don't have to go out to California. I could do that one meeting by a zoom rather than Spain. Five spending five grand to go out to California for the week? Yeah, I think the guy that used to have to go out to visit you know the plant in wherever you know. Four times a month was going out once a week. Once a week. You might go out once every two weeks or once every four because some of it could be done virtually now. Right, right. That makes sense. So be safe out there. Steve sparks astros. Broadcaster joins us steve. Welcome in. tell me steve. Is this team good enough. When they're healthy to overcome let's just say the bullpen was like this all year up and down. Sure let's just say. Are they good enough when healthy i c my hands in the air. 'cause there's so many things to love about him and like oh you can't give up seven runs in extra innings you know but are there. Is there hitting good enough. Did they can overcome an average to below average bullpen throughout the season. No right now. I mean you're going to need a lot of these guys. Step up and i think they have them but I mean they can't sustain what they they've had to endure. You know the last week or two. But before that i mean we saw stanek. And there's a railing. The pitchers pitch much better. And we know what they're capable of. So i expect that you get into better position as far as your mental state a- pitcher once you're used in situations where the matchups probably make more sense than your better rested and i think getting some of these starting pitchers back three in the last four games. The astros have gotten starting pitchers back from the i l And you'll start to see guys you know in pitch one out of three days for one inning and the look a lot better because their tongues hanging out. Steve is our pitchers pitchers personalities more fragile than other players. I don't know this answer. I've seen closers that have struggled. We saw lidge and we saw mark wohlers back in the day. go through. we've seen paddle bongo. Threw it at times ended a lot of them. Then that's back in closures but our bullpen and your knowledge of over the years. Her bullpen pitchers really fragile. Or do they get over it quicker than maybe a starter or a closer to us. I think the good ones get over it quicker than anybody else on the team. You know i. I think ever it's equal opportunity when you talk about fragility on the diamond. The the good thing is about for position player usually they get back out there within twenty four hours. I think there are certain types of pictures that can't teach every fifth day because of the way they're wired mentally ill so i think it makes it very difficult to pigeonhole somebody in there mentally. Who who's gonna really take it hard for four days after a bad outing get back out there and and not wear it again in the first inning. If something goes wrong in that next out and so You start to evaluate those types of things. I think in the minor leagues better suited to do what not only physically mentally too. Steve sparks joins us every week today. Tuesday because of memorial day. Yesterday steve How close are they in that bullpen. I mean you get eleven. Are we a long way off. Is it like you said. Just the star you know a couple of good innings and you're like i'm back it in your mind just as the optics and your insight. How far off are we from saying. Okay we we've got a solid bullpen. Will start working backwards you know in presley. You're very comfortable attempt for pitching one inning. And they've right. They've tried to extend past one inning. Maybe four or five times now this year which is asking a lot in this day and age And then you work backwards from there and what we saw. In the first month season that stanford looked like he certainly capable of locking down for one inning and going out there and dominating Anybody but then you're starting to see some things together. Got blake taylor back another lefty so you give rayleigh a chance to catch his breath and i have to. Pitch is often the as the ad then. And then you're starting to look around saying okay. can we fix presley Scrub just went back down to sugar. And there's there's enough guys who you're saying. We know they fish well in the past. What's different from last year with scrubbing parades and a couple of these. Other guys. That pitch well for me. The only thing i can think of is that they're staying in the stands now right and are they able to to handle. The extra adrenalin hit. When they go out there they go or they gonna overthrow because there are so high that they can't they can't control themselves yet so there's probably a little bit of adjustment In that arena for a few of these pitchers josh. Jiang's coming back pretty soon. We might see austin. Pedro is throwing in in florida. Still and he pays him a lot of money in the offseason. The come in helping. You can get a lot of big outs. So as the starting pitchers get a little more healthy and get deeper into these ball games. You get mccullers back into the into the rotation and then you probably move luiz garcia out there. That's another weapon of fear. I think you're starting to look at a pretty good bullpen. Yeah no doubt about it steve. Sparks joins steve. I said earlier before you came on you know going into this season was looking for a consistent. Third outfielder right center fielder springer gone. And we're going to get him in there in a platoon situation. I'd get it i get. We'd love to have that position solidified but now looking at where we are third of the way into the season. If you said okay you can only have one priority filled the before the trade deadline. I think this team's good enough to overcome that position. She with the way the when they're healthy the way kyle tucker swings about so. I no longer think that. That's a number one priority. During this season i would say bullpen and pitching for sure. If i had to choose one going out and trying to find me a starting everyday center fielder right now for this team while it'd be great i don't think that's the first priority. Am i right or wrong. I agree with you. Yeah i totally agree. I mean i think love thirty percent thirty two percent. Something like that I l is at thirty two percent from two seasons ago in a full season where it wasn't major league baseball guys are getting hurt. They're dropping like flies. I think your main priority is to build some depth. You know and i think it's all the way around that. I don't think it's about going for stars when you look at expectations. When the astros lineup is completely healthy certainly straws decent matters more than anything else. Just getting on them you know. his on. Base percentage is a thirty two percent fine. You know when you got guys bangs. The way they're banging and healthy team is phenomenal scoring runs. Because they can do it. So many different ways. So i. I just think it's it's figuring out some deaths pieces everywhere you know and and that way you're your cover because there's going to be more injuries and there's going to be a devastating one at some point probably and you're gonna miss somebody for so maybe a month or two rather than just the days at some point. How can you handle that. Can you withstand that. There's a the mets had seventeen players on the i l. right now and i think they had the the biggest lead in all of baseball in their division can because of debt. You gotta have guys step in and if you look down in aaa or at the higher levels for the astros It's not really that their deep or that. Their bench is in Capable that is their death pieces to stay in a big injury or two. And that's where i think. They need to fortify things steve. I know you've probably heard this tyler. Punch-up the korea comments and steve. I don't have much of a problem with this. But some do. Carlos correa on his relationship with alex.
