Ready to shop with a "smart cart?"

"You pandemic has brought about a ton of tech innovation when it comes to shopping between ordering everything online in curbside pickup. The next phase of this might be the smart cart according to my colleagues at the cincinnati enquirer supermarket chain. Kroger is testing smart cards where shoppers pick their items place them in the car and leave without ever having to go to a checkout or register i this is how they work. The carts themselves use artificial intelligence to recognize what you put in the cart. So you can take a box of cereal. Draw pasta sauce a gallon of milk. Whatever it is the cart will recognize what you place inside. It also has scales built so if you're buying produce it will wait for you in the cart and then once you're done shopping you back up your items and then you make a payment directly from the car itself. This idea of checkout free. Grocery store isn't new. We've seen amazon experiment with this already. Last year. they opened in grocery store in seattle where users can download an amazon go app. They scan a barcode to enter the store. Then they scan what they're buying and once they're done they just walk out and received by email and it's all done within the app. The fact that kroger is testing smart cards is a pretty big deal. The cincinnati-based grocer operates several regional supermarket chains in thirty five states stores. That you may have heard of like fred. meyer harris teeter ralph's marianas and host of others. The company has nearly twenty eight hundred stores so the fact that they are testing this out is pretty significant. Once they get to a final place it's going to be at a lot of different locations so it looks like your grocery experience is going to get a lot more technologically advanced in the months and years to come

"Then Jason Williams of the inquire takes over and he will take you all the way till midnight. Well, I'm all excited about our next guest. We used to cover Reds games as back up beat writers. When we saw each other in the press box that Riverfront Stadium, we knew it was going to be Armageddon. John Girardi, author retired from The Cincinnati Enquirer. But always, Mr Baseball. How are you, sir? Great. I can't recall the guy's name, but somebody said the R B I record for a single game. I think they beat Jim Bottomley is records something of former Red future Hall of Famer, but, yeah, it was crazy. Every night. We're down there. Check. It was never a normal night. I don't know why it is something about the DNI. A of you and I get together just created fireworks. And I think we were there The night off. Eric Davis is cycle. If I remember correctly, No, no, no question about it was really one of the highlight games that ever seen because Frank Robinson had one of those in the very fact that Eric was able to pull that off. I mean, he was the type of player that way would say. He's going to do this, and he sure as heck did, But it was still so exciting to watch out that night. No doubt, no doubt. And John when you hear the words, Hank Aaron, Man, what are some You can't talk about him without Hyperbole. I mean his records when he retired, he had the record for records held. I mean, the guy was just amazing. Yeah. I mean, he think why I know it's number one all time until the basis, But the incredible thing is he's 722 total bases ahead of the number two guy. Was staying usual and that's two or three Good seasons. So you know so many great numbers with him. Chick One of my favorites is number one and runs an RB eyes. He's really a good base runner. Much better base stealers and people gave him credit for On when he went into the Hall of Fame in 82 with Frank Robinson. My gosh, she got 97 20% of owning the only guy that beat that in baseball history until that time was Ty Cobb. And, of course, Tom Seaver and other great to passed on last year, he cooked them all before Griffey Junior took the top spot, but My gosh, Everything he did was great. The longevity that consistency and my favorite thing with about him was in that game. That career tying home run since today. We're Marty made the call in his first year is a Reds broadcaster. So a lot of fun memories of Henry the one thing that I am proud to say that I didn't get to talk to Henry that much. But for some reason, I was able to get ahold of him. When when Marge Schott was up to her, you know, terrible racist comments back against the 92. Henry Henry Aaron was the first guy to call for his call for her suspension. And sure enough, I mean that story. That time I wrote it. Was kind of buried in the back of the paper. But by the time he came out of Henry's mouth, and it was getting around the country, it became a top story. So Henry was the type of guy that even we may have been eclipsed by Willie Mays in terms of the showmanship and the flamboyant to me. I mean, you could make a great case chick that this guy's the greatest baseball player of all time. You certainly can. And man he did it with gosh, just with with grace and dignity, and just there's a nobility about the guy. That, uh, man I can think of like Mohammed. We hand on a Hank Aaron. Wow, The list is the list is pretty short. It's It's interesting. I think Cincinnati fans would appreciate this is that The only difference really, between Frank Robinson and Henry years his longevity. Henry had a longer career. But if you look at their 162 game averages, they're right. They're right about the same so and when you think about it, I thought picture today. Clemente Aaron. Amazing. I can't. I can't imagine a better All Star all field in that and then you throw in Billy Williams and Frank Robinson me. No wonder Vada Pinson made so few all Star teams. He's playing against those guys. It's It was incredible era and of every mall. You could make a great case that Henry was number one no doubt and the ties that he had with Cincinnati and the Reds. Just amazing his debut against the radar in a game that Joe knocks all one in six and a third innings of relief 98. Three months before I was even born back in 54, then his 3/1000 hit at Crosley, the first home run hit in Riverfront Stadium, and 7 14. Cincy. It's incredible legacy that he left. I know he loved hitting. You know it. Crosley Field in particular that first game he played here and 54. You mentioned Knoxy. I think Knox he mighta hit Andy Pafko on a pitch. He got away and Henry Held that against Joe. Even though the pitch was not intentional. It shook up every little bit of his debut in American League, a National league. He sees a guy carted off on a stretcher, so There wasn't any love lost between he and Knoxy. But Certainly for connection to a city, uh, outside of Atlanta and Milwaukee. How would argue this was that's hitting ballpark, and, uh, Owns his greatest achievements, and you've only got to look at 7 14 to realize that no doubt about that. And how about 3771 hits? You take away his 755 homers and that's still 3016, which would last 29th all time. There's a whole chamber without the home runs. Yeah, I mean, that's the thing about him. He just happened to hit 7 55 balls out of the ballpark. But he was in everything hard and And that's what I like to bawling. His doubles total is incredible. And I think it was through five lifetime hitter maybe higher than that. So you know again, like Frank Robinson, just a great pure hitter. Hit the ball hard, almost all the time. And 7 35 just happened to get out of the ballpark, But yeah, he He was the kind of guy e think, he said this one time. Maybe the Lonnie wheels a great late since in a sports writer. I think he told Lonnie If I had to buy a ticket for one game I.

"What do you think is going to be the the Ki tto winning that game for either extra elder this week. I know it's it's the low hanging fruit, and it's a cliche. But if you look at these two teams through the first two weeks of the season, they each have a loss that each have a win and kind of the thread that ties those two together is, you know, say next week want on national TV for four turnover? Some summit very inopportune times in that game. That really allowed Brownsburg to get back into it. And, you know, Elder out. Got a little sloppy against LaSalle Saldana little fluffy against elder That game, But I think whichever team place disciplined football, whichever team does not shoot themselves in the foot takes care of the football. I mean that that's probably going to be the storyline this game that's going to decide it because you know, like we already mentioned. When under a normal season under a normal circumstance, no pandemic going on. You have so much more time to get this stuff ironed out before you even go into week. One, right? You know, this is week three already. And it's a truncated season. They haven't had the same time to prepare going into the season. That's why I think sort of getting getting those kinks ironed out and playing clean football is going to be so important. Especially right now at this point season, right like you mentioned. I mean, I'm looking through this. This this sort of packet of scores here. And just like you said, the truncated season, you know, not having the time in the off season. You got Fairfield put up 35 Elder put up 102 games. I mean, seeing Lakota West, putting up 40. Seeing any of these offenses, especially kids that haven't had time to put the work in and put the put the academic part into it, I guess. Yeah, that's that's amazing in and of itself. So here's Here's my last question. We as elder fans and elder alumni were extremely spoiled. Growing up. We had this prep sports network. On the radio broadcasting this and then we got lucky enough where there were some of those guys involved. They started streaming them. Online and it it kind of felt like elder and the gcl. We're sort of innovators. When it came to bringing bringing the games to people outside of the stadium, Do you? Does it seem like there's other schools that are starting to do a lot of that? The streaming Oh, yeah, And honestly, I've been really impressed because one of one of the interesting things that come out of this my career path is a lot of time to get asked. Well, I guess pre pandemic, but a lot of times I would get asked to go, you know, talkto, highschool journalism classes and sort of see what they're doing, and you got a lot of places. Mason really stands out with what they do, but A lot of these air student run. Yeah, and you know they're letting them sort of what their beaks so to speak and get their feet wet with trying to figure all this out. And, you know, I know it outer. You watch the game streaming like these are high school kids, man in those cans. Yeah, and doing that work, and I think that's pretty cool because You know, when we were at outer I get to write a story and that would pretty much be my only outlet or my only options for trying to do this, and now it's like you're in high school. You could be behind the camera, right? You know, you could be doing all these different things, and it's just impressive How far things have kind of. I think a lot of high schools are really sort of taken advantage of these opportunities. And you know that, given the inquires from competition for coverage, right students? That's pretty crazy. I like you go. Yeah, that's that's we got to get our fixed somehow. And I just kind of always thought to myself. I went man. We're lucky I got elder games, You know, streaming, you know, Like I said, I watched The independence and elder game in Charlotte streaming on on the Internet. I mean, that was That was something else, But yeah, it's it's It's goingto work somehow some way so I know I talk to you about this a couple of days ago just just offhand. You mentioned there is going to be a playoffs and years passed. I would get frustrated when elder would only come out. With eight or nine games, and I'd say to myself well, how the hell are we going to get into the playoffs? You kind of explained it a little bit. How are the playoffs? Going to work this year with the shortened schedule? Yeah. So you know, everyone's going to be eligible for a post Wow. Which is is going to be crazy because I think what's gonna happen? You know some point Obviously, we want everyone to be healthy. We don't want anyone to get sick. But like I've already seen it. You've already seen that kind of effect this season. Already, Kings Kings lost a regular season game because of a positive test and you know you don't you don't want anyone to test positive, but like that's that's going to be something that I think is gonna have an impact on the playoffs is like You know what if AH, team like a runner has someone test positive and they can't play in that playoff game like that, to me is kind of the cloud hanging over his head. Right now, you know what I mean? But it's going to be interesting because I also think You know someone that stumbles out of the game that didn't play their best in these six regular season games. They're gonna have an opportunity to go on a run on see if see if they can win a few playoff games, so that storyline is going to be pretty cool as well. Yeah, who's going to be Cinderella? Yeah, this this is maybe this is going to be cool. It's going to make for something fun. I'm good with it for one year. But like baseball, there's a lot of normal. Yeah, There's a lot of people that want to keep certain aspects of sports that have You know, I've been forced to change because the pandemic but, man, not this one. I want more high school football, Not less. But anyway, I agree. Adam bound. Thank you so much, man. I really appreciate it anytime. Like it was good. Catching up a man. Take it easy, buddy. You took my man. Adam bomb. He's a Ah, usually the Xavier basketball beat writer for The Cincinnati Enquirer, however. He's going back to his roots,.

"The Yarnell carriers. Sports talk presented by Kelsey Chevrolet. Coming up at the top of the hour, We'll talk some Bangles football with James Rippin of Sports Illustrated and more current Newt, formerly The Cincinnati Enquirer, now a adjunct professor. At Miami University. Love and honor is going to join me at the bottom of the eight o'clock hour. And this day has got a cardboard cut out every cardboard cutout at Great American ballpark. Is a touching story. A great story behind. You're sure I want to hear marks and then we're reminisce a little bit about our days on the Bangles beat and then a little bit about what he's doing now at Miami University. Awesome and Chris You're well not only well versed in basketball, but, man, you got a grip on really all sports and especially being a Cincinnati And how awesome would it be for the Bengals? They have some success with Joe Burrow a quarterback. I tell you what I like. Excitement and anticipation. Peak levels, right? Yes, things are starting to come together. A lot of hope. A lot of hope. Just counting on a big Gioia. Bring it home now, huh? Yeah. And I just You know, I hope they've built enough around him so that he has some success. I mean, you really got to get Mike Brown a lot of credit this year. The spending that he did the commitment to this team. I mean, all it seems like all the pieces are coming together, you know? Hopefully the right coach. Hopefully the right quarterback, you know, spend a little money here make make it an attractive team for free agents to come to. I mean, Joey Burrow has a good first year that's going to cause a trickle down effect for other free agents want to come here and play. I totally agree and when you've got a good quarterback I'll never forget this when Mohamed Sanu and Marvin Jones became free agents and they were key members off. You know, the Bengals playoff run? I'm there. Okay. Calvin Johnson had just retired from the Detroit Lions. Matthew Stafford has a cannon for an arm. I'm there. Marvin Jones is a Detroit lion. I would have Some people call me he signed, you know, a few years 40 million or whatever. And then Mohammed Sunu signs with the Atlanta Falcons. You got Matty ice there so Yeah. So you're right, trickle down effect. You want to play for a great quarterback? That's everything and you want you want to play for a guy that's going to create and I hate to keep coming back to this work culture, But a guy like Joey Bro what he did. Once he came down went went down to L s u first year kind of just like beacons weigh in. And then last year, he took over and said, This is my team. Yes, This is how we're going to play and we're gonna win games and you have tohave not only a coach that's in line with that, but you have to have somebody enforcing it on the field. Oh, absolutely. What a leader and From the Heisman Trophy speech in the Thean packed that that had on his community in southeastern Ohio. It was so much fun interviewing Jimmy, his dad and Yeah, That was awesome. It's It's never going to be easy, right? It's never going to be easy. There's going to be hiccups. There's going to be pitfalls to this season, but if they can improve upon what they did last season if there's tangible A tangible attack to the games this year and game plan. You know, he comes from the SEC and the Big 10. There's a lot of SEC and big 10 players in the NFL. Can you imagine if this ball gets rolling? And then he can start reaching out to other Ohio State grads? Other L s u grad and say, Hey, guys. Cincinnati's a place to be absolutely Wouldn't that be awesome Man? Bengals fans have toe you have to love behind him. They've got to get home and it's not going to be easy this year. You know there are going to be trials and tribulations and you have to stick with them through the thick and thin, But I mean, if if he delivers like he's supposed to, it's going to be a good season. And I'm thinking just how difficult it's been to learn a playbook and to practice. Try to learn an offense remotely, you know, but I think Not having fans in the stands here on opening day, it might help him sure where the distraction he can concentrate right. Picking that defense of the camp of the San Diego Chargers apart instead of all the hoopla in craziness surrounding him, I'm hoping that helps him and I'd love to hear what James says. When you talk with him about the level of focus. And it's almost a relationship that the quarterback has to have with his receiving corps. You know, you hear about the great ones where they just put in repetition after repetition after repetition. And I would think if anything during this time, it is allowed Joey to get with his receiving court and to get those reps in to really just get it to where it's second nature. I mean, you look at the highlights he had it else. You chick. I mean, he'd have his head turned one way, and then he throw the ball the other way, and he knew that his receiver was going to be 40 yards down the field wide open, and that's one of the big question marks. Has he gotten enough reps with a J green? Because a J. Green pulled up lame, you know, with a with a hammy and.

"Lawmakers in Ohio have announced an effort to impeach Governor Mike Wine over the state's response to the Corona virus. Several GOP lawmakers have drafted articles of impeachment, representative John Becker tells the Cincinnati Enquirer quote. We fired Speaker Larry Householder and the public wants the wind fired as well, unquote. He had several high ones are frustrated with the wine constantly moving goalposts on how to tackle the novel coronavirus in Ohio, the House would have to vote to impeach the governor, then a trial would be held in the Ohio Senate, with a two thirds vote of senators needed to remove the governor from office. stall on his own as I will return and remember Ohio state had won the big dinner before that and almost got to the final four this had you know winning in order not to move to make Clemens was on that team and was big ten point most Bible portal and they had a very good team they might wanna begin again you're the ones that take it we were given their name after you know after the bowl of the ruling came down that the game's over Ohio state wins but they were playing the rest of the season I just want that was the going forward that are quite so I won't kill borough badly I don't want to trade the pick I don't want him to start in the game this season I hope it is still here for a period of time just so I know but they get you know borough was great as he was in college season it was the only full season is a college quarterback he was terrific no doubt it was college football well you know the NFL and and we've got a good veteran cornerback here who may not be here much longer but they need to keep the ending long enough breaking borough I really think that's what's so intriguing to they have enough money to do that well yeah that that that's huge and farming know the fans are gonna be clamoring for borough yeah you almost feel sorry for for Dalton I've been one in college football since the early sixties yes that's the best unbelievable I've never seen seven touchdown to be here he loves you he's in a lot of reports and the bangles certainly need shopping or tickets and stuff like that yes wouldn't it be season tickets to create some excitement yeah all right here yes also many empty seats but work what happens you know there's a couple people love to getting my aiming Carolina but the Bengals have got to keep him and when you see but now two in a row they've won a couple in the world it was nice to win that game they're always tears right Hey they beaten triple six three times now you know the trouble reduced temple but the make up of this team now here in Cumberland the ball in his hands as the point guard absolutely down the stretch you want that and we three learns plan and Aurora is hard work Dave dot team too bad they blew a couple games are really missing because they certainly did they'd be like please fourteen five but they're doing well in the conference one one today a man that's who you see host on Tuesday night yes and you that's right and eleven point lead late next game and didn't score again unbelievable wow is the new baby please report but I think the better capital taken then you get Houston at home which is really tough Wichita they need to have the next three yeah they really do have to get that I think the company grow in your brain is doing a fine job he really is I totally agree I think you do a fine job and in the Superbowl I want to but I think San Franciscans gonna win I think there will better team but what it takes I did two years and I want to take some always like to change and I want to come back is Jimmy G. Q. where I could just turn around and hit the ball yeah he's gonna have to throw the ball on third and long some time here but I don't twenty past due to I know it's unbelievable city Hey homes is imprisoned believable better we'll see if they can enable San Francisco but I want to teach in this job I'm I'm glad learning Walker made the whole thing I really am when I it's going to get in but and almost unanimous but who didn't vote for Jeter no doubt one guy Larry Walker got in yeah but I'm also thinking day Parker deserves it so no data Pinson well I don't think either one river going to get in and that's a shame but I've been chilling gets in next year but closer I'm happy for Larry Walker great ball player he really was and the people didn't even want to hear you I think you agree with me he deserves to be an is a great player he was a great player with Montreal in Colorado great player all around me running he was a great player Tom Brady guardian Hey buddy good to talk to you too well well we'll see what all right man I'm starting to have a little bit more confidence in the bear cats and the musketeers huge win for save your over Georgetown now they go to Creighton tomorrow four o'clock tip off all the coverage right here on seven hundred W. Well council this week, which nobody really took time to notice. Everyone's talking about the text message council voted eight zero to increase the center for closing the healthcare budget. Seven hundred fifty thousand dollars more. So actually the health gap will get fifty eight thousand more than it did last year from the city. As Jason Williams writes, never mind ungoing, public concerns about the organization's effectiveness in how it spends the money. The founder of that group of courses Twi Tillery before. Just hours after the news broke Wednesday, but Dwight Tillery had threatened civil unrest in text to some council members last year. During the class between mayor cranley and the former city manager Harry black. So, so basically do I totally. At the point of the bully pulpit. Threatening to foment civil unrest, unless the city council does his bidding and it happened again. It happened again this past week who's really running things. So I've been last seven years, I've been doing about seven days a week. So it's time to. Slow it down a little bit grandkids of sic. Best friend want to spend more time with chunky. I just, you know, more times, a family, and friends, and, and maybe some new opportunities who knows how gathering news and reporting news chain over the right over the course of here. I went from an F M station that had the little. Print printers dot matrix, printers. Yes. L W. All right. I'm coming to the big one. This is great my dad's all you got to work there. You know, Trump is there. It's the big one thousand watts, we had the World War, Two teletype, sort of, you know, with the brighter things going in the background the made that funky Sal used to here in the old movies. Yeah, yeah. We had three of those in a room and you had to rip the paper, I mean it was like stepping back in his also like national news, or whatever Detroit, or say, here's a story and ship it out get it. And that was the liar. It was the AP y or, you know, just, just in, you know, like in the old movies, right? That's what we had. I mean, now, we changed it rarely Michaels came in and changed all that. But initially that's what we had. I thought I was going back in time. So obviously, now everything comes through the internet. So, you know, we use the poor own sound, you know, when ABC would feed something, we'd have to put it on tape, or a cart, or real real. Well, and yeah, so it's much easier and yet put those tapes in the car, and then put them on all done by licensing razor described that because I say is talked about that, when you had to splice you interview somebody call up, and you do have interviewed it's a real real to at the, you know, the some people still use because it's a lot of sound. You're gonna put it on for a party for twelve hours. You know you have that real to reel, so you do it, you'd stop and you'd have to sit there, pull the tape out, cut it put some tape on and, and literally spice it spliced tape you head editing tape and you had razor blades everywhere you always had to have some fresh razor razor blades ready. And I heard Brian go to ABC news, because they thought a plane had accidentally floated into the towers, and then when the second plane hit, I wasn't here, yet, I do something that we're under attack. And then, of course that same year we just came off riots in downtown Cincinnati. So two thousand one was a crazy year. Right, right. Yeah. Those, those Republicans the, the biggest ones force tornadoes elections. I mean, there's been a lot of different how many elections have you covered cashew. So what am I, I hear was covering Reagan on fountain square? Tracy Pratt sent me down to, to cover Ronald Reagan on rain came down, though, cover. I covered Ronald Reagan more than because he was about. Of course, he was in for eight years. But I mean he he was a lot of in Columbus here in Cincinnati. Yeah, wow. I think I covered every president either officer out. Off its except for Bush to except for. Okay. Yeah. Is there any correlation between new retiring now before the election or no? Absolutely not. Lately has to do with the calendar. Absolutely. We've had so many great people. And that's that's the best part of the job. When the story it was all the people. Right. Most the a lot of the people you see on TV came through year, Andrews setters and, and, and the names go on and on, you got any, you got any just memories of interactions with people here. I mean getting you're talking Willie your. Oh, he's just stand out as being funnier significant. Oh, you know, I mean, we're all friends and you know that you've been around our newsroom of we get together all the time outside of the office. So I had Christmas parties for years, that we're a blast and people still show up that have not been here for twenty years. I it's, it's just a great a great friendship and the people here have just been wonderful. What do you think you'll miss the most on Friday when you leave and you wake up on Monday, and you don't come in? What do you think you'll miss the most that day, the every day back and forth because Matt, Matt REEs, Brian combs that I will pass two weeks ever since I noticed that was retiring just been storytelling. And so, I'll miss L miss that, of course, we're going to get together. But right. All miss that in in. Yep. Jack. And then there's this been it's, it's incredible friendships. Now it's funny you say that because I mean look, I retired from the NFL and any player what you. Do you miss? It's not the games. It's not though. It's all it's the locker room. It's way. Jeff, you'll missile locker room. Is is. Well, how do you think social media has impacted news over the over the course of your career specifically last ten years? Well, it's, it's, it's another resource obviously. But I think it's, it's in somebody else me this when it comes to, like, meeting people. You don't meet people like the movie stars. And they don't go out on the road much anymore. Everybody. Everything's done social media wise in promotions of whatever. So you don't see as many people, will you stay have all sorts of people here, you know, James Brown. Yeah. You met so many people coming through and doing the circuits, there's no more circuits. It's all based out either Hollywood or wherever they're based. So the promotion wise, I missed that, because that was fun to see those kind of people the famous people. But, you know, information wise, it's, it's, it's been a plus is, is social media, though, in terms of how people get their news in the is a is a newsman is, is that good or is it bad? What your which people's you know how they receive news is changed. It's, it's really a heads up because there's no confirmation, and you got to confirm things. So and you know what? Confirm the crazy. Thank you for doing that, because most people don't you don't have to be accurate. You got to be I say. So and so is saying this, and we're not sure that it's true. And it's as good for right? Absolutely. So Jeff lashed. I'll ask you and you appreciate spend some time with what's, what's next for you. I mean I, I know you won't just you know you got the art gallery but anything else you're planning on doing a trip. Yours wanted to go on anything like no. Not. Really? I I'm going to see where it takes me. If if an opportunity comes across, I, I may do it. I mean a farm that I got to catch up on because I've been working so hard on two different projects. But after, you know, maybe a year after I get caught up on everything and spend some time with family and friends and get everything done. I might look around and pick something else up who knows. Very good. We'll Jeff look again. I've worked here long time. But again, been listening to you longtime, I appreciate your professional, you are. And just I just really admire. How you go about your day, so there, thank you for, for showing that to me. And thank you for all you've done for the tri-state. Thank you. Jeff anderson. Everybody us so let's do this. How about we? We turn onto a topic how have how's your job changed over the years. You know, say you work a certain place for a while and times, change technology changes and you've had to adapt with a tons. We'll take your calls on that and much more next, but I hit some traffic rob when he got from these e health traffic center at UC health.
