John Zmirak: We Are Fighting Off a Public Health Dictatorship

"It. Obviously, Donald Trump and Franklin Graham people that I would generally agree with on many things, they are saying people should get the vaccine. Of course, they're not in favor of vaccine mandates. But that's kind of where we are right now. Thankfully, the Supreme Court struck down Biden's outrageous overreach, trying to get every company in America that has a hundred and more employees mandate the vaccine. I don't know what's what's the biggest news. You know, because people say, it's so great that it was struck down then I think to myself, the idea that it had to be struck down. The idea that it was floated by this administration is just astonishing to me. Yeah, we are fighting off the imposition of a public health dictatorship. And here's the sort of logic point, a little chunk of logic, I think you should hurl in people's faces. Currently the law of the land is that privacy is such a sacred American right that a woman can abort her 9 month fetus at will. But if she wants to eat at TGI Fridays, she has to show the hostess her vaccine passport. Riddle be that Batman. It's simply

You can definitely do that together. Wearing black and navy together and horizontal stripes are. Okay okay now. Tgi fridays onion ring. Snacks the kind that you see in the grocery store with the chips like they have onion rings. They're well they're now being sued because this guy daniel hilts in illinois says. There's no onions in there. There's not real onion so he feels misled. You know i was eating laffy taffy. The other day didn't laugh at the joke. There was no laughing in there. I think i'm going do everything rolling processed food. Do you expect there to be a real as like an onion. Exactly there's onion powder in it. You're not going to a farm and someone's here's an onion and they're not and they're giving you a sweet potato. It's it's processed food in a bag. Now if i go order like an onion rings a restaurant or blooming onion it's not a real onion. Then i'm going to be tastes are still okay. So brett eldredge was talking about.

"We're back again. We're back back back again and fact what was going to ask you. Oh i wanted to go back to dating do you. So you're single right now. Single liquor prankul. Who do you have like like. What's your ultimate fan to say when it comes to being in the do you want to be in a relationship or no. I would love to be in a relationship. But i've learned from defeating is the other people aren't ready to be in a relationship that many terribly selfish but it's it's so true it's like will i'm ready but you guys haven't called off with the cop and the truth is twenty four saw twenty-four-year-old you're so young. Thank you very much. God but so. Many people are just so interested in who ups and stuff. What man and that is. That is fine. But there's so much. And i feel politics and dating prayer. He is like you know date with someone. Then they'll go on a date with someone else and then it's that whole gregory of winner. You exclusive winners this thing. Because i'm very like all or nothing. I'm like i believe they're all my energy into this and we will make work or i'm not this. People are like am chill. I go with the flow. I'm not one of those people. And i'm doing what you're doing at who you're doing you know. I'm very much agree. I'm also not chill a. I'm pretty all or nothing specifically because like that's just who i am as a person so like when i decided to do comedy i was like i'm only doing comedy. This is like laser focus. I do shows five nights a week. I'm going to get as funny as like fuck be. I go to my job. I give it a one hundred percent so it's like in a relationship. I'm like wait. You don't want to give one hundred like what is your gonna fucking give fifty twenty thirty two different fucking people. Aren't you tired yes. I don't understand how people in their brain die. Say things like that had the up. I'm going to do this. Only this percentage like there is one brain. I will put back towards this or that. Then that's how i see it. I didn't experience actually just before going away to do drag race. And i dated this guy and he was. He didn't get my like all or nothing thing. I remember it would be just before we'd schedule d. Meet me at five. The tgi fridays and it was for drinks to a lovely purple rain. Can even before drag this. I was ready for love. Usually meet me a tgi. Fridays casually. Let me backtrack. They have drinks is so funny but the guy was like he started being a bit weird. And what's up. I've done something that you're right said will i just up with someone and i don't think you're going to be okay with that and i was like well. I'm not okay with you bringing up your like two minutes before the date and then we'd be like so you come into the date and he was like no i'm no and then it was kind of him acting hot and cold and because this particular before drag race felt really down in the dumps really dupree honestly i remember. I just amused me. Let that i remember. There was one time he said. I wanna see you tomorrow. Let's do something tomorrow. And i did gig the next but at nighttime said so we'll do something. During the day take stem he open debt vade and the never go back to me and he came to my show that night with a guy on a date now because we are in the job where people can bring people in and it's fun and it's that and i couldn't believe the nerve as tasted say the cheap the nerve there that he nerve. I believe that is like an abusive fucking person who really wanted to hurt your feelings. Because what on earth like who does that. Who's gonna bring a date to the show the other person you're see. Rub it in your face. Yeah that is. Why fucking nasty. I'm so sorry that happened but that person. We hate them. Nothing but badness to on them. The funny story is the day after that shore. I felt so in the dumps. I was crying too flat me. I was like don't really love sme- text. Hi this is the drag race team. Can we give you a call today. Cast and drag race. So that all happened ferguson. In my head and it's helped me on a more positive mental.

You should always do that. I think that's great. I think in the future if something like that pops up. I think you can just chat with him about it. Like there's nothing wrong with taking a time out. Can we award a boon as opposed to punishment. That's right because there's not really anyone in the wrong here. Yeah maybe just free meal. A tgif said there now sorry i wanna play a war for so bad. "The Maison with Kevin Nation. I've been doing a lot of reading about the middle class, I fall into the middle class and I'm feeling very frustrated at times because I don't think I'm getting ahead quite like I want to and as the end of my lifetime comes about in the next twenty, thirty four years, whatever it happens to be, I still want to be able to survive and enjoy life. At the same time, what we're seeing is the squeeze of the middle class. Right now, we're in the world of The Haves and the Have Nots. What we're finding is a lot of middle class oriented businesses. Like restaurants, they're being squeezed as well. Restaurants that were normal. Go to is for people, like the Olive Garden, TGI Fridays, Applebee's. Many of them have been squeezed downsized and been forced to re-evaluate their situation because the middle class, the people who liked getting a good meal and a good value aren't using those types of restaurants anymore, because they've had to realign their budgets. They're going for more of the fast-casual, not as much serve, but cheaper prices, it's not right, it's not fair, it's just reality. And we've all got to figure out a way to survive.

"Be TGI Friday shut down indefinitely due to what's going on in our world situation so that is a shut down don't be going there because you will not be getting in Nick was in Chicago producer Nick over the weekend and I was really anxious to talk to you about what it must have been like was it a ghost town was it empty it was a bit and look we kind of evaluated this all throughout last week should we go should we not go beginning of the week it seemed kind of foolish not to go we're going to be just as safe in Milwaukee as we would be in Chicago as the week went on yeah it got a little dicey but we were like you know what we're not going to stop living so we're going to go to Chicago we went to a restaurant on Saturday night in the waitress is telling us that they normally clear about three hundred people on a Saturday night and that night they were going to do about sixty wow where were you who we were dead right downtown in the loop right on the river our hotel was right on the river the restaurant which was about a block down the street and will not side with it for the crowds of people walking around like there were a lot of people wearing green and still doing the same Patrick state thing and we walked up and down Michigan Avenue the magnificent mile a little bit and I don't know because I'm not that familiar with that area on a regular Saturday in the winter time it was cold it was cloudy I would imagine it was a lot more data we went to navy pier yesterday and that was a ghost town there was nobody around I mean the parking lot was completely empty you could just tell people were kind of taken this seriously at this point well here I've noticed people starting to respect the social distancing thing much more in just the past two days versus last week Friday even over the weekend people were starting this to stand separately did you see that in Chicago were people sitting separately not necessarily it was just overall I could tell there was less people around the normal in my attitude towards it has changed in the last forty eight hours I would say now if I went to a restaurant and I saw it was packed and it was almost you know a sold out crowd in the restaurant I would probably turn the other way and I probably find an other place to go where is Saturday I would not have done that it's for fourteen A. W. T. M. J. sports with Greg is up next then exclusively on W. T. M. J. the C. E. "And so I do get a charge out of educating people Chicago beats is and a lot of times even locals who grew up here or in the suburbs and fancy themselves. You know pizza aficionados. They don't really know much about pizza. They've been to three or four pizza places and they think they're experts They've been to the one of their office in your home and then the one in between and so. I really can't have spent the last couple of years. Teaching people about you know what Chicago Style. Leases are what what does that mean. Where can you find the good stuff? A lot of. It is off of Michigan Avenue for most of the tourists go. It's SORTA like New York. You say you know. I've only spent forty eight hours in Times Square and that's been your eating experience. That's kind of what it's like. Just going to Michigan Avenue tourism engine. Yeah I did a pizza tour a few years ago where me and my wife. Emily went for way. And I think this kind of probably along that same sort of thing. We started at pizzeria Uno and went to. Donna does and I think we did pizzeria. Duo and there's another one maybe there's work the fifth wedding there but you know it took two hours of walking along and eating pizza of course. During the time we also had gone sleigh Gino's east and it was probably a more generic as kind of say can a tour. We did get a chance to get a peek wise. Heard so much about and some some other places that but it was really fun. Just to indulge for one afternoon just eating Pisa which we often boys. You're talking about an interest in makes me sad It does it really does because you come to my city and you've eaten. Tgi Fridays And then now you think you've had Chicago Com to I MEAN DONALD. First of all is not deep dish. It stuffed pizza. Which is a totally different style has started in nineteen seventy one Deep dish started nineteen forty-three tavern style..

"Our guests. Very interesting. And I also wanted to ask you about your your team. You you've mentioned that you brought together existing teams, including one that was practicing organization of yours. You were CIO head of strategy for the company prior to taking on your current set of responsibilities roughly eight months ago. And of you, then brought together as you mentioned before technology digital consumer groups. You've got the connection point view opperations that you to as well, can you talk a bit about the, you know, how you drew from the different parts of the the organization to create the team that has now you. Yeah. I mean, it was it was really again trying to think through less about functional responsibility and more around. What are the types of you know, experiences that we want to employ right? So in pulling together, the right people for marketing when we say marketing, right? You you have creative people in marketing, you have brand people in marketing, you have you know, media people you can't you can't think of marketing as this. Obviously this monolith. Right. It's it's the individual Pallandt that you wanna pull into that conversation with my digital team. That said, okay. If I if I now connect with someone right? I have to be able to in this case. For instance, give the AI tool some boundaries. Right. I have to say, you know. The content you need to pull from and you need to think about when you're creating new content. Looks like this the creative probably needs to look like this. And so it's it's ingesting the experience from my team to basically be able to teach the tools how to create things new ride. So the interesting thing about AI is it's not predictive analytics, right? It's not saying I'm gonna give the tool choices ABC, and you get the pick one based on what you think is going to be most relevant to John. It's saying given I'm teaching you ABC. I'm feeding those three choices. Now, everything, you know, about John the tool creates option d creates an entirely new option to send John new content new creative new message etcetera. And so having the people on the team that helps educate and help steer that learning is critical right because otherwise it's garbage in garbage out. So it's it's really having. The right folks from the right disciplines from an experiential perspective teaching the tools that they'd get started on the right foot. And then learn faster how to get to messages at actually create an action on behalf of John shreve. I also wanted to ask you about the your prior role as officer and head of strategy. It's an unusual combination of roles all the more unusual to be to have been hired in with those dual set of responsibilities as you were a little more than two and a half years ago. And I heard you could talk about the rationale in having a CIO in strategy responsibilities under one executive from the gecko of your time. Yeah. I think you know for us. You know, I was at my history was more on the on the strategy side of as a management consultant of did that for many years ransom. Other companies and coming in and having discussions with then the CEO and the board. It was really as we start talking about the strategy of the organization. We started talking about the priorities. It became clearly evident very quickly that everything we were talking about had technology and naval -ment component. And that to really execute any of these things, right? So that they go from, you know, blue-sky statements on a piece of paper to actual engagements into actual execution at the store level. And with our with our guest was to bring those two pieces together is to not even think about strategy in today's world without thinking about technology, and I think anyone any brand in a consumer facing proposition today can't think about strategy without thinking about technology. I the two are inseparable in my mind, and in and luckily, and my organizations mind, and that's really what led to having the dual role initially. And then again from my perspective, you can't think about in in my mind CIO today. That's not or should not be. Dealing with the experience of their customers. It it permeates everything from an experiential perspective that guest has. I mean every consumers walking around right with a phone in their pocket or mobile device. And so how do you use that as a consumer facing brand, that's technology? That's that's connecting the dots between strategic goals and business objectives with how do you enable it on behalf of the guest? So in my mind, every CIO that's out there today should eventually take on this chief experience officer role. Fantastic conclusion you draw from that. And obviously speaks volumes us to your company as well as orientational towards customer, the extra customer, they're still enforcing or so many of your former appears view, the internal employees colleague cluster reservoir to having that meal touch points in relationship with with extra no customers that are required to deliver upon what you just described. But certainly. Very compelling once you know. I also I also wanted to to know you talked about a number of rising trends intelligence is one of the prominent ones, for example. And I wonder are there others that particularly excite us. You look for the future. Yeah. I mean, there's a couple obviously that I mean come to mind, you know, for for us. I think in for any organization again of scale, you know, what what could become a blockchain. I think is still interesting. It's early days. I think you're starting to see it, obviously more and some of my colleagues that work in the financial institution sectors, and and deal with more of a security issue data, but that that's calm in our way, and like a freight train, and you know, as you think about even protection of supply chain for us where food is coming from. And and how do we ensure that the data that revolves around that is is kinda connected from all the partners and all the people that play in that in that chain, so to speak, I think is going to become a bigger role and something that we need to continue to look at as an industry, not just as individual organizations, and then Secondly, you know, there's there's lots of talk around basically voice, as you know. People say, you know, half of half of every search done by the your twenty twenty is going to be voice initiated, you know, people are gonna stop using their thumbs. It's almost coming back full circle. People are gonna talk to their phones again or to their devices to their cars. And so how we play invoice not just outside our restaurants. But thinking about hot is voice play a role inside establishments. I was voice play role inside a retail inside a restaurant inside a hotel. You know, I think the peration of these devices not just again separate little things like Alexa, Google, but how they're embedded into everyday objects and things that we use as a as a consumer base. I think is going to become a much bigger play going forward and something that I think everyone needs to start thinking about hobby. How do you play in that space how to utilize it not to replace that human interaction, but to engage it and make it better that that for us is kind of how do you start unlocking? The power of what voice is going to be going forward. That's interesting. Here you talking cross several of these brings to mind the old notion of engaging the customer as he or she wishes to engage. It seems like a lot of customer experience as it translated for the physical to the digital still dictated maybe a little bit of flexibility between you know, impune base versus mobile platforms. But a lot of your new say is different

"Around a loyalty program, I do restaurants today. And hey by cash, you know, you'll know nothing about me. But but since so what's the means of of engagements? How does that begin yellow? It's actually number ways. Right. So there's definitely our loyalty program are Fridays or wards program where we have, you know, multiple millions of members, but there's other ways to right. So when guests come in, and they potentially sign into our guest WI fi inside the restaurant were able to collect some information. And if they give us permission the ability to engage with those guests going forward, we have people that again, engage with us on our social platforms. We know who they are. They talked to us whether that's Facebook or Twitter our chat bots. You know, listen, they dialogue on Amazon, Alexa, and Google home. And so we're able to again, listen any gauge with guests, even though they're not gonna check the box were able to have those conversations and really collect information that. Help us understand who these guests are what they're looking for. And how do we best engage with them to create more loyal Fridays members going forward? So really, lots of different ways. We collect it and engage loyalties just one of those channels interesting. And I know that you've you're a big believer that now the user of artificial intelligence, I wonder if you could talk a bit about the a our AI powered marketing program that you developed. Yeah. As as I mentioned that, you know, for us to do what we need to do at scale, you you have to use new technologies, and for us is one of those new technologies that really kinda unlocked the the secret sauce, so to speak in lowering us to create Personalizing gauge -ment at scale. So no, I could have lots of people behind laptops, understanding who Mary versus John. But I can't have enough people to do that across you know, half a million guests every day. And so that's where we start using the technology. That says, okay, you've got all his information, and you have it at a very specific level. How do I think about utilizing that to engage a very relevant very specific basis? So instead of sending at the highest level, you know, we used to send a ribs promotion to the world even vegetarians right because it was just one size fits all in the past. Or I might have said something very specific to Atlanta to a set of zip codes because I know. They like a certain rib flavor versus another one. But we gotta get past that I mean to be relevant and different enough in today's world consumers want you to know them. They want you to know who they are. And they don't associate themselves as a as a boomer or soccer mom from Atlanta there, Mary or their Susan or their John. And so we use a I to really personalized information. So that if you're John, and you ordered from us last Tuesday at seven pm, and I know you probably based on your order have a wife and two children. Maybe this Tuesday at six thirty pm. I send you a very specify specific message that fills your basket with what should be something you ally and create an opportunity for you to have a very relevant very convenient very friction list experience. The AI allows us to do that not just with John. But with half a million people and. So that's really where the power of the technology allows you to have that type of specific engagement, marketing perspective and do it at scale. Talk a bit about how you solution to that what technologies behind this or maybe even some of the who you partner with what teams on team members and your team helped bring this to life. How what was the approach there? Yeah. So, you know, again, we're we're a restaurant brand. Right. So we don't have MIT data scientists on staff. So we utilize that's very smart external partners. You know, we have a group out of Seattle called imperative that helps us stitch the dots. You know of all the state. I right. So John ordered from us online. John was in the restaurant. John know tweeted about us. Those are all three disparate data points coming from very three different sources. But the tool helps us connect those dots stitch data so to speak. So that we know of this persona is John and it's a singular individual. And then I have another group that worked with my marketing and digital teams group here out of Austin, Texas, called, hyper. Giant that utilize and help us build our AI tools. So that we're now will take that data and create again, very personal relevant content at the exact time of day that it's going to be most considered. And so those tools we kinda built in house again, kind of a nice partnership between external partners, and my internal team to be able to create again, very specific automation tool. So to speak that allows us to ingest this data, and then do something with it. Right. Create an action on behalf of our team that hopefully creates an action on behalf of our

If you like what you hear be grateful that you give a rating on itunes or through whatever other source, you use for podcasts, and please subscribe. So you don't miss a thing. Thank you might guess this week is Sheree Mitya's treat as the chief experience officer of TGI Fridays in that role created to bring the technology marketing customer groups together Shreeves focused on connecting these dots and using technology to create personalized and frictions experiences. In service of the company's guests previously schrief was the company's CIO and head of strategy prior to joining TGI Fridays tree spent twenty plus years in a variety of industry, and consulting physicians across the retail and hospitality sectors. In this interview. He highlights the importance of intertwining strategy and technology and argues that because of the overlap between the two every CIO should serve as chief experience. Officer from his perspective. Every today is dealing with the experience of the customer because from an experiential perspective technology permeates everything that customer does technologies such as artificial intelligence and voices. Two devices have provided the company with ways to better understand and engage with their guests. We also discussed the ways in which the company segments, the guest journey the use case received for blockchain how companies d to engage with the consumer and of variety of other topics treat Mitya's, it's a pleasure to speak with you today. Thank you so much for taking time. I thought we begin with your Rolla TGI Fridays. You are the chief experience officer of that organization. And as that is a non-conventional title thought, we begin with your own description as to what that entails in what your purview is. Yeah. I mean, we, you know, obviously, as a very consumer facing brand, we really step back and felt that you know, organizations that are created based on bunk shnell silos are just that they're silent. And so we really want to take a step and say, you know, we we are here we exist because of our guests are consumers. And so how do we think about how do we organize ourselves? How do we work together differently to be more guessed, I guessed facing? And and really have that thread from a customer perspective throughout what we do. And so really the role was created to in very simple terms. Connect the dots. Right. So instead of having separate and technology group accepted marketing group a separate customer group. It's how do we think about integrating the different functions again from view of of a guest from? My perspective. And so as the chief experience officer, you know, I worry about that that experience for our consumers, whether that's in a restaurant, whether that's an off premise experience, really whenever and wherever they're having a TGI Fridays experience. And so we brought the functions together that really impact the guest those include technology and digital obviously with with all the you know, inputs that that occur today and everyone walking around with a with a mobile device, you know, it's more and more prevalent than anything you want to do. In terms of touching guest involves technology both inside and outside restaurants. But then we also touch our guests with marketing, we touch our guests in terms of understanding their their insights and being able to drive that in from culinary bar perspective. So we brought those organizations together. Now, I respond to -bility for technology and digital marketing culinary bar with a strong connection to my you know, my feel ops team. Actually deliver that experience to our guests every single day. So in my role now, it's really helping now in connect the dots. But really ensuring that our Orgainzation is working more tightly more connected with always that best interest. And always have you of the cast in mind Sharieff? I I wanted to also ask you as you think about different guests and big about guests experience. How do you engage with? Yes. To get their perspective. And I'd also be curious the extent to which you think of different personas as part of that process, and how to engage different types of guests in different ways their preference. Yeah, we really think about guests in in a few ways, obviously one. That's more. Traditionalist is by channel. Right. So how do we think about guests? Whether those are folks that are coming to us and spending time in a restaurant versus those that are coming up and picking up to go order, those that are sitting at home and having food delivered, right? There's there's different ways that guests can interact with us from food and beverage occasion. And so. We think about those customer journeys so to speak differently. But we also think about occasion. And so as as you know, kind of a social brand, obviously we have occasions where people are just coming out for lunch. People just coming out for a family dinner. But there's also those occasions where people are celebrate celebrating something, right? They're coming for happy hour with friends. They're coming out for an office party. They're coming out for birthday. And so from from an occasion perspective, what a guest wants what they believe they, you know, need from requirement perspective from someone providing that food and beverage experience is very different. And so we really look at not only channel, but occasion. And really, you know, engage with our guests, obviously inside our restaurants. We talked to many of them not just while they're there. But through external means being gauged with our guest through social, obviously media platforms and through chat bots that. We've employ. Loyd on different on different platforms. You know, even gauge guests Amazon, Alexa, voice assisted devices. Right. We're kind of engaging and having conversations we're listening to what they're looking for the questions. They're asking the brand. And it helps us really understand not only what people are people want from us. But what people are talking about in general, right? And so we're able to pick up trends or able to pick up case profiles, and sometimes those are very different again based on the type of customer we're engaging with where they're geographically residing etcetera. But for us, it's you know, the the ability that really harness and captured data is is at the forefront of what we need to do. Right. Because at the end of the day, we need did not just understand boomers or millennials or gen Xers. We need to understand Mary versus John. And so we really focus on collecting, you know, kind of specific and discrete information. From guests that allows us to personalise and really differentiate that experience going forward for us. That's really at the crux of what we're trying to achieve. And centered around
