Happy Friday, one and all sometimes success backfires on you. That might be the case with water burger cult favorite burger chain. Founded in Corpus Christi Texas back in nineteen fifty founder, Harmon Dobson's vision was to offer a made to order, five inch burger huge time that would prompt diners to exclaim, what a burger it worked in spades over the last sixty nine years. The chain grew in two thousand one the Texas legislature named water burger a Texas treasure today. There are more than eight hundred watt burgers in ten states with annual sales of more than two billion dollars. But until this month, it remained family owned on June fourteenth Dobson's announce they sold a controlling interest to merchant Bank in Chicago which intends to further expand, what a burger, but here's where the chains vary status as Tex. Sys- treasure hurts Texans are livid in Austin, a fan posted a sign saying, dear Chicago. If you hurt her kill you an Instagram post showing a picture of the sign got more than sixteen thousand likes and comments like, don't Chicago, my water burger and naturally dough mess with Texas. They warned the new owners to keep their hands off the menu, the burger recipe the catch up and even the mustard. Many commenters asked why the family didn't sell to an investor in Texas, y'all when you build a company with a following his rabbit as water burgers will change in ownership and expansion is a very tricky thing. Indeed, the company needs to maintain its identity, even as it scales up beyond the difficulty of family succession after three generations. What a burger may feel the need to expand to compete with its rivals. Arguably, its biggest rival is every hamburger chains biggest McDonald's, but suggest any what a burger loving Texan. The McDonald's has anything in common. With their favorite burger place and you may get run out of state. So who poses the biggest problem for what a burger one possibility dare I say it is Irvine, California based in and out burger, which Texas monthly reports has as big a cult following in California, as water burger does at home in and out recently expanded into the Lone Star state horrifying Texans who are already unhappy with an influx of Californians into the state much less their hamburgers, the seventy year old west coast chain, though, does pose a threat to what a burger at home prompting taste tests, competitions in columns about who's burgers, really best. Spoiler alert here, despite lauding in an out withdrew worthy compliments, Texas. Monthly's blind taste testers ruled what water burger to be best hands down. Well over its seven decades in existence. Family owned in and out burger has been expanding even more cautiously than what a burger it has some three hundred locations compared to what a burgers, eight hundred but recently crossed, not just the Texas State line, but also Colorado's where it plans to open fifty new stores. Both companies face competition from other fast rising chains to shake shack five guys in smash burger could give either one or both a run for their money. So where will what a burger go next and we'll Texans ever forgive them. Chicago's. And obvious guests as is the mid west in general, and at least one, a communist familiar with what a burgers, new owner speculates that it plans, an expansion nationally along the lines of McDonald's and Burger King, but not to worry, Texas. He says they'll keep what makes water burger, whatever and just help spread Texas culture across the country. Now that's the way to play it. And that might just take the sting out of this deal for disappointed, Texas. From wondering this business daily. Fresh update on "texas legislature" discussed on The Erick Erickson Show
"Really WanNa go though it's it's where I'm the least political other than Philip puts up clips of this program. Do. You guys remember Kermit Gosnell Kermit Gosnell Kermit. Gosnell was an abortionist He was a serial killer Kermit Gosnell. Allowed women to do such things as deliver. Babies I induce their labor and let them deliver babies into toilets. He actually did that Kermit Gosnell. Is just horrific crimes as an abortionist and the national media refused to cover Kermit Gosnell. In fact, Mollie Hemingway writes the federalist I believe it was molly. He me way she reached out to the Washington. Post to find out why the Washington Post would not cover the story. Philadelphia's is kind of what was within the sphere of influence for even Washington paper the, Washington paper, The Washington, post wooden covered because in their words, it was a local crime story. Shortly thereafter. Wendy Davis in Texas decided to stand up and where her pink running shoes abortion Barbie to Filibuster a Texas abortion law where she failed. The media including the Washington, post heralded her as a national hero for a local legislative maneuver in a state that cannot get the Washington Post in Brent. Kermit Gosnell and abortionist who was in the backyard of the Washington Post was local crime story. Covering as he induced women to give Labor into toilets and then essentially drowned their children and He Wendy Davis standing up on the floor of the Texas legislature in a procedure that failed was a national hero to the Washington Post. It's amazing how selective the media can be telling certain stories and I've got to imagine that that selectivity comes to the story and it is a tragic tragic story that deserves national exposure and I suspect if the races were reversed would get national exposure, a man and North Carolina. Shot and killed his five year old neighbor. In. Front of the five. Year. Olds family. In Wilson North, Carolina Darius Systems Twenty Five. Shot and killed cannon minute. Well the boy was played in his yard with his family on Sunday evening. Cannons Mother said her son was playing outside when sessoms ran up to the boy, shot him in the head and fled. Doris Lebron a neighbor who witnessed the shooting till w Ra LTV. That sessoms ran. Up to cannon. Put a gun to his head. and fired. Before running back to his house. Lebron said she I thought sessions was playing with the kids? But when she saw cannons father's reaction, she ran inside and called nine, one one cannons mother and the boy sisters aged seven and eight were playing with him when the shooting happened in witnessed their little brother getting shot. He was taken to a nearby hospital where he died. No details about a possible motive for the shooting have been released but police said, the shooting wasn't random sessoms live next door to cannon's father. A neighbor said, the two men had dinner together Saturday night. and. That sessoms was at cannons father's home earlier. Sunday the day of the shooting. Systems was caught Monday night about twenty hours after the shooting in the nearby town of Goldsboro he was charged with sugary murder and being held without bond and the Wilson. County. Jail. A gofundme page has been set up to raise money for cannon's funeral expenses. There is undoubtedly. More to the story if the family had a relationship. With the next door neighbor there undoubtedly is. But. Can you imagine. If the races were reversed. The national media. would be highlighting the story. As another example of injustice in America. The national media wants to tell you a narrative about police violence in the black community win statistically actually it. It's not significant the tell you all of these things. And they want to tell you a narrative. They don't want to paint you a full picture. They want to don't want to tell you stories that might disrupt the narrative and you know there's a path forward for the narrative that exists because. We didn't use to have police body cameras and cellphones, and now we do and and there's a whole lot more police violence and intimidation than we knew. Is Not most police officers. It's not even a majority of police officers, but it sure does happen a lot more than any of us knew. And so I can give you the statistics, but then I can show you the body cameras and I can show you the cell phones and I can tell you that there's a release you out there. But in the last couple of months, we've been treated to dissertations from progressive activists trying to wave away black on black violence trying to. Get you to pay no attention to what happens on the south side of Chicago and and trying to build a narrative that that leaves out those sorts of things. And here comes this story and I can't imagine there is a single person listening to this program right now who isn't thinking what I'm thinking that if this was a young five year old black boy. And a white neighbor who came over and shot him in the head and killed him. This would be the lead story on the nightly news. But it doesn't fit the narrative. And interestingly, enough I put this out on twitter and said, why is it this national story and a bunch of progressives are trying to in only white nationalist WANNA raise this story. This is all you part of the white nationalist agenda. And, that's what they have to hide behind. Justice is supposed, to be blind. And Righteousness and justice they should flow like a river across this country. and. It shouldn't matter whether the five year old is black or white. If the media would cover it because the child was black and the shooter was white they should cover it when the child is white in the shooter's black and they won't because they're not really interested in justice. The left is not really interested in justice. If the left were really interested in justice, they would not have calmly Harris as the Democrats, nominee for vice president when it is an objective fact that she kept young black men in prison to serve as cheap labor for the state of California and willfully. To disclose to defense attorneys evidence that was a sculptor Tori, and could have gotten people to jail. That's not in dispute that was in the New York Times they wrote it..

"Should february. Now, it's January February ninth twenty nineteen and we are continuing here with our Texas legislative series as we are. Now speaking with us here in the studio, we have Texas house member Rina Ortega Evangelina Ortega, do you prefer it's actually ever Lena. My my nickname is Lena. Lena. Gotcha. Put an extra in there. My apologies. But Lena Ortega from district seventy seven thank you very much for joining us here today. Well, thank you for inviting me enter. Yeah. Definitely there's definitely not enough Pasa was so far removed both physically and politically from the rest of Texas that many passengers don't necessarily get why they should care about the Texas legislature. And it's I think it's very important to remind them that. Yes, it has even though no there is no income tax which most people gripe about from other forms of government. There's still a lot of impact on our lives here that comes straight from the Texas legislature. So thank you very much for coming in to discuss that with us today. So because the legislature it's also a very strange process compared to other more commonly discussed at and I'll pass forms of government where it's not a an ongoing process. Like, most of them are the legislatures a very short brief compact process competitively. That's correct. We need starting in the second Tuesday of January every other year, and we are in session for one hundred and forty days. So we have a lot to do a lot to accomplish in a very short period of time. So how do you say it's going so far here? In other words in February. Well, this is my my second session. And I'm looking forward to it. I think that it's so far it's been a very positive session. We got our committee assignments about a week ago. And I think that our delegation did extremely well in the assignments. And I'm very proud to say that my colleague Representative Joe moody was was made as speaker pro tem, which is very unusual to have a Republican speaker select a democrat as his. Well, as is second to to the to the house in leadership. So we're all very proud of Representative moody. So there were some we discussed that last week on the show synthetic but had just come out there and we had him on two weeks ago right before he that was announced which is a little oh come on. It couldn't have happened a few days before. But so put that into perspective for us. What what does it mean actually for someone to be the speaker proton? I mean, if the speaker himself proper isn't there speaking for ten is generally in charge is there anything more to it than that though? He takes over. But aside from that. I mean, he he becomes a leader within the house membership. If things are going on you go and talk to Representative moody about it because he's constantly communicating with the speaker, the speaker has so many things going on it's impossible for him to be on the house floor. And that is where Representative moody is and it's an honor because he's part of our delegation to have him desert. Gated as the speaker pro tem, our current speaker was the speaker pro tem for our former speaker, Joe Straus from San Antonio speaker Baden now here the so that definitely interesting kind of possibilities. When you think about it, though. Again, the the politics of it are interesting again, the Republican democrat can combination here, which I don't feel like has been that often happening in Texas houses of late. I'm I'm not aware of it happening in prior sessions. If I am correct. Maybe it is the first time that that has happened. But again, the dynamics in the state of Texas took a big turn in in November and demographics are changing. And I think that it was a very smart move on on speaker. Bannon to have where we moody designated as a speaker pro tem, so again, some very specific duties that he has. When he's on when the speaker is not present there. But now also a very important symbolic kind of thing. Overall sounds like an hopefully, maybe a signpost on how the rest of the session might go. Oh, I think that our speaker Bonnin has been incredibly fair he promised to be bipartisan in its elections of chairs and committee assignments, and I should add that where we ended moody does continue to sit on committees or and so he's actively working that as well. He's filed his own legislation. So it's he it's just an added responsibility that he has taken on with a very proud. I'm sure to be doing it. So some of the major focuses that have come up at this point in the session. I mean, Texas school finance was one of the kind of major bright line signposts put up by the speaker so far. But then also we have a few other issues that are coming up. Almost because of national or other factors as well. Like, I mean border security in state funding for that is definitely going to be something that's going to be half to become. But are there any particular priorities that you're focusing on this session? Oh my goodness. I am focusing. Let me just generally explain what they are. They have filed a number of bills already and plan on filing more bed in in the in the categories of public health elections voting safety to to the public and and bills it help economic development in in our community, very important and varied subjects here. So for people who may be interested in any in any particular Bill that you wanna talk about. Well, for instance, economic development, I have filed a Bill dealing with the minimum wage as we know the minimum wage has been the same for for ten years roughly, and it's at seven twenty five I have filed a Bill to try to change state law. Currently state law does not allow local governing entity such as cities and counties to set minimum wage for their community. So like what Las Cruces did he up in New Mexico cannot happen here. That's exactly right. Actually, this is a law that is in effect in New Mexico. And so what it allows is the cities to determine what would be the best rate minimum wage for their community because every community is different. And the state of Texas is so large what is considered a living wage in our community, maybe different than in Dallas or in. Houston. So it gives the thority to the cities to the Kelly's knees to to decide what is the best minimum wage for the community. And that is a minimum wage is actually been increased in the majority of states, and we're kind of far behind the ball. We really are. Right. Yeah. And and you Mexico Albuquerque increase their minimum wage Santa Fe did Las Cruces is kind of like what you said. A few minutes ago is now in the process of doing the same thing. So this it's my bills is is the same as what is currently New Mexico law as well as law in other states of the United States. Now, there are some states that have decided just to increase the minimum wage on the state wide. But I believe because the state of Texas is so diverse that it was important to do. So at the local level. So I'm hopeful I actually filed the Bill lasts. Session. And it never it never got voted on at the committee level. And it kinda like what you also said earlier, I mean, passing legislation actually going to the extent of it becoming law is a long process. Most bills that are filed ended up dying and never becoming law. Yeah. Because unless it's a top line priority because of that quick nature of the session. It can be difficult to have it actually get pushed through. That's correct. So particularly on this one though there have been kind of some of this stuff happening. With local efforts trying you know people will some kind of local control. I mean, I'm thinking of particular reference to like fracking ordinances and things like that that have happened in some texts that is to the east butts for the large part, those kinda got smacked down in the state legislature. When it comes to that. Because I mean it. It's kind of a dichotomy in my mind talking about well, it's important that you know, we have local control, but not like that not the way you're doing. Right. It's kind of local control to a limited extent. It's like the legislature. The Senate has actually already started their committee hearings. The governor has in the state of the state announced what his emergency items were and one of them being property taxes, and he wants to cap property taxes two point five and should a local entity want to be above that that cap then they have to take it to the voters. So the Senate has already started their committee hearings on on on that cap. And this was something that came up again the last legislature, and we had a lot of people from El Paso, go in and and testify and explain why would be very difficult for our community because what's happening right now on going back to what you said earlier as well on. Public school financing. Right that if we had a cap placed on on on our community a lot of funding for public schools come from property taxes because the legislature has not seen fit to increase the funding that are public schools need not to the level that that they need in order to get by. So we are this session is successful and public schools or the funding is at a level that they can provide the services that are necessary for our for our students are children, then I think you can potentially talk about capping property taxes. Nobody wants to increase property taxes. That's for sure. That's not great starter here in Texas. Right. Right. So that's an emergency item that has been listed by the governor can actually be debated sooner than the are. We we can't start debating just regular bills until March that emergency items can be debated earlier. Okay. So there's some possibilities there though. I guess has the has the overall kind of opinion, or, you know, the the attitude of of the Texas legislature changed enough where kind of a bit more local control for things like this. Do you think it's likely or has has enough changed at this point where that can maybe go through at this point in time talking about any kind of that little control stuff? I think it's too soon to tell I mean, we're just getting going, and we won't know until we see what happens on on the Senate floor is that the house floor. And then we will find out. I can't say that there at this point that there has been a change. Gotcha. So again, trying to just try to move the ball ball forward on that issue at this point in time. But I guess there've been any increase any kind of encouraging discussions that you've had with other fellow members. It's I believe that as as as a democrat. We believe that there should be local control because again going back that every community is unique every community has its own individual needs. But we saw that. There was a a big divide at the last session. Although we had very we had moderate Republicans who also felt like we shouldn't be taking away. Local control on certain issues. So maybe maybe some movement there..

"And so the reality is that it's not really, and this is always the case j Leeson when we get down to it. When we get down to the business of Texas. You know, since Republicans have been in charge, and by the way, it was also true. When Democrats ran both chambers of the Texas legislature, the real conflicts begin to be about the house versus the Senate, the Lieutenant governor versus the speaker, and you know, when those don't agree on something a lot of times, the governor who would step in a governor Perry was very strong in that role. Governor Abbott has not been as strong in that role of sort of refereeing the action between the two chambers. And like you've got to very strong willed people in Jenin governor, Patrick and potentially as the speaker candidates Dennis bond. It'd be does actually take the chamber the sparks could definitely fly. We'll see you say if I've talked to people today who say this is a done deal is it. If or is it win. Well, it's about fifty seven days until they actually vote for speaker. I've been talking with some folks this afternoon about speakers races in the past. And for decades. This is the case for decades. No one has seen a speaker's race be declared over by so many people, you know, in November in early November. And so there is a ways to go here. The house members could could obviously change their minds. But right now Dennis bond is on track to be the next speaker of the house. I think that's beard who is who who were still candidates on the Republican side. Who who do we have left? Well, Phil king dropped out. And for the price dropped out. Travis Clark dropped out this afternoon. Are we left with anybody? Where's Darwin Darby, drew Darby has said to be out of the out of the running? I I think for the most part he we had reported earlier in the day just to be clear about chairman Darby was that our sources were telling us that he had a told the folks of those house members who heads committed their votes to him that he said they were free to do whatever they would like to do. So it does seem that his candidacy is over as well. Okay. Again effort on that. But I'm gonna ask you this question. And now, we're getting into political weeds..

When the Texas legislature convenes in January It will not be a topic of discussion yeah Charlie there was a day-long hearing yesterday by the select a state. Spent the entire day discussing whether or not Texas needs a red flag law a lot of, gun control groups like moms demand action spend a lot of time and delivered, a, lot of statistics about the usefulness of red flag laws they. Said there have been for example they said in all of the mass shootings in the United States committed between two thousand nine and two thousand sixteen there were warning signs that if anybody near the shooter would have taken the person's, guns away the incident might have been prevented in forty two percent of the cases officials say red flag laws in Other states for example Connecticut was one that was cited frequently have significantly cut down to the number of suicides so it isn't just mass shootings it's suicides and especially domestic disputes where guns are far more frequently used the mass shootings get all the attention but domestic violence and and suicides are the two most common uses of guns for nefarious purposes about Lieutenant governor Dan Patrick came out of that hearing and said enough he said there is no. Support in the Texas legislature I, don't support it governor, Abbott does not support it a red flag law that was proposed in the two thousand seventeen session. Failed that never even made, it to, committee so I can tell you right now the red flag laws will not be considered when the legislature convenes in. Two thousand nineteen but the Lieutenant governor added that school safety will be number one priority and, he said the legislature will take up several proposals including changing the architecture of, school, buildings to limit entrance Points increasing the presence of law enforcement officers in. Schools, expanding the school marshal program and better dealing with. Mental health, and substance abuse issues those items will be. On the table but. Red flag laws that might allow. "That's in richards things cried by our guest lawrence right in his new book god save taxes you wants wrote a play about the texas house of representatives which you described as your favorite political body what what's distinctive about the texas legislature this is a little bit like a small countries parliament maybe not so small i mean texas is a little bit larger than france so you you get a sense of what the state really is when you're actually sitting in the legislature and talking to all these people and you get a sense of diversity you know this the state is really you know it's a is try to say it but it really is immense and you know there's a congressional district is larger than the state of indiana so when you actually have the chance to go and talk to all these political figures from all parts of the state the diversity just really makes an impression on you and yet there are a lot of competing interests in texas right now and it's a very divided state politically which i think is somewhat reflected in the nation as a whole but seeing it all inside this chamber this beautiful chamber it's it's a real education on on how politics works now it's a magnificent sandstone building the state capitol the legislature meets only every other year yeah it's a part of the constitution of the state reflected from the days when texas was a republic and the reflects the the tag anisim the texans have had toward government from very creation of the republic and then the state if you let politicians in the capital only every other year there's only so much mischief they can do well tell you if you spent some time in the texas capitol you'll see the wisdom of that we're listening to the interview fresh air's davies recorded with lawrence right author of the new book god save texas we'll hear more of the interview after a.
