"Piece of work, man. No doubt can tops and Andrew Fish faint on a big show Monday. Fishbein always great to catch up with Jeff Benson, and I can't wait to see that property to circuit in full swing. I mean that sports folks like three levels and Just ridiculous, and that's going on there. I mean, during Stevens has that place set up that, like I said, Bucket list for everybody coming in town. Absolutely two things. They can't wait to see the sports book and the pool's because they have that giant TV out there that you can actually see from the 15 Freeway. That's just going to be absolutely amazing to be. Their allegedly could see it from anywhere in the pool any of the pools Want a giant TV that's going to be just amazing. I think you can see it from Barstow. I wouldn't shock May it's unreal. I fish on Saturday. College football got off to a little bit of a slow start. But, uh, make some money and the cool thing you know, circus sports and and many others in the state of Nevada and other states around By the country now offer the running wagering where you can play the games as they're going. And then, of course, have timelines and whatnot. I was able to make some good money on some of the games at halftime, Uh, got burned on a couple games early had Kentucky plus 7.5 points and they looked like they were going to take care of business. There was AH, ridiculous call near the end of the first half, and sometimes I actually tweeted it out. I mean, Kentucky ones, the ball and the guy's knee never touches down. You even said that, you know, and that was the only debate but they weren't saying that his knee came down. They just were marking him short of the goal line. You saw on the replay, which I tweeted the guys more than a half a yard into the end zone. They took take it off the off the board. There's time running down and then an interception return, which was negated as faras. The touchdown return for Auburn because of a targeting on the return, but nonetheless, instead of Kentucky, scoring that seven points and and having the lead at halftime. End up uh, you know, still trailing and end up losing that game. They played a lousy second half 29 to 13 Auburn one but football said she gave the momentum and Kentucky was really playing well at that time, and then I got burned by Ole Miss Adam Plus 14.5 and they lose by 16 The last play of the game. Corral was right inside the 10 yard line, and he throws the ball the guy's wide open in the back of the end zone, but he put too much on it because he was being pushed a little bit so Uh, that that ended up going arrive, But I had Arkansas over Georgia they covered. I was impressed with Kansas State taking out Oklahoma straight up second year in a row. This time they get down 35 toe Fortin on the road in Norman, and they storm all the way back and win it on regulation. 38 35 stunner for the Sooners and the fans that back this team knowing how bad Lincoln Riley want revenge on Cleveland and Thiss Wildcat team. I got to get case state a lot of credit. That is just a gutsy effort on the road, not just to come back and and cover and make it close but tow win the game outright and to leave those sooner fans just stunned. Yeah, And that was one of the three games that I missed because I had Oklahoma. I had Georgia and I had Alabama and those other three games I missed on my my 3 14 parlays each one on a different parlay. So it was a tough weekend as Faras. I was concerned. I was happy that I hit something. Yes, I did. Take Auburn. I like them a lot in that game. I just thought that they were bone. It's had a lot to prove. I had UCF in ages dominate over East Carolina. But watching that that Oklahoma game I was to be honest, I was shocked. Yeah, Oklahoma is usually a team that dominates teams. They come in. Come in. Norman, especially team, My Kansas State. And all profits to them for coming back in that game where they could've very easily you know, down 21 7.5. They could have easily folded and they didn't. There you go. Well, I did have Mississippi State. I took leech plus 17 points in that game, and they beat l s u the defending national champions Outright 40 for 30 for, uh, Brennan. Not that great. But how about K J. Costello? He's been there it stand for the last three years watching leeches, high flying offense at Washington State, You know they played against Stanford. You know those three years and lo and behold, Costello grad transfer goes to start Phil and in his first game against the defending national champions throws for 623 yards and five touchdowns, Mississippi State roles in Baton Rouge, 40. For 34. What a way to start the leech here or down there and start Ville. Absolutely, And that was one of the lines and I was absolutely shocked at that, Ellis, You was the favorite that they were When they lost so much special and you lose your number one running back your quarterback. Obviously several wide receivers. I did. I couldn't understand how Ellis he was going to such a big favorite. Also another starting player. I can remember who was I believe was hospitalized the night before for Ellis, you and have you seen that You knew not to play them, and I got Mississippi State was a great play. Yeah, that's Ah, well, I wanted a boy. I'm trying to remember. Stingley, Derek Stingley player, right? And he missed that game. Okay. Texas, Texas tag. This is one that if you had Texas you're like, OK, I got this game early on. It Looks like they were going to take control ofthe 31 21 have the lonely old in Texas Tech takes control by 15 with about 4.5 minutes to go. Texas gets a touchdown to cut it to eight and then a touchdown in two point conversion. Unbelievable. They went, it's 63 to 56 over time, but that was one that Texas Tex should have had, and they let it get away. Just Ah, sad effort down the stretch by that Texas Tech defense or lack of it. Meanwhile, Texas am boy they nearly lost in college station to Vandy. I had Vandy in the game plus all those points. Won't be old Texas saying and struggled mightily fortunate just to win the game, Kelly Mahon only through for 1, 89 and a touchdown, I'll tell you what the fans they're college station. I know they wanted by five. But when you're 31, a half point favorites that's not going to flush over there in college station too long, you know that It's almost like a laws. I mean, you'll be want to know, but it's gonna feel more like a loss. On. I will say this the other game that I was the final score. Not that might not Miami one, but the Florida state. I mean, they don't even existed as 10.52 10 to Miami hurricanes look like they're for real this year. Yeah, Derek King. Of course, the transfer from Houston quarterbacking the cage right now. But, yes, this Florida state program. Has fallen off the map. It is absolutely incredible. They've made coaching change. After coaching change. Mike Norville was not able to be on the sidelines coming over his first year from Memphis. And, of course, he lost the opener already to Georgia Tech in Tallahassee and then to get blown out 52 to 10. What an embarrassment right there. James Blackmon struggling all teams struggling again if you're Florida State fan From years ago like my buddy Jim Hunziker, who's a proud alarm? Just saying Good Lord, Bring back Bobby about it doesn't it Doesn't Chris Winky Selves ineligibility?.

Fresh update on "texas tech" discussed on Freddie Coleman Show
"It's not like past years. You don't get a group of five opponent or an F. C s opponent early for a couple weeks in nonconference to iron out the wrinkles. It's go time right now in conference play, I think I was most impressed with Mississippi State because they're an exception to the rule Michael each new Coke. Which new Air raid offense new quarterback in K. J. Costello from Stanford. They throw for 623 yards on the road of the defending national champs, and not for nothing other than Kyle until the running back. There's not one dude. That was star for Ellis you on Mississippi State. Maybe quarterback A J got still at the Saturday but anybody else not to me. Those guys are starting on the other side, and they went out there and put it on their defense, Freddie any any, Unless you think I saw a lot of this over the weekend. You fired Coach. Oh, is all Joe Burrow and Joe Brady and a veranda means shut the hell up. We've recruited Burrow who hired Miranda, who hired Brady, You miss that many guys either to the league are opting out. Awful one team. You're going to have issues, you know? Or or, you know Alfred Coben reasons. I mean, you're going to have issues and they had issues. So did Texas until that glass crazy. 2.5 minutes, Oklahoma loses to K State who just previously lost Arkansas state. I mean, it's it is his one, the craziest beginnings that we will ever see. In college football and get ready. It's going to continue to get funky is going to continue to be weird. That's that is going to be the common denominator throws his entire college football season. It's just going to be Weird. Expect upsets every weekend. If it looked like that, on Saturday with the S E. C. What is it going to look like the first week in the big tent? A great point. If this pandemic football man, ask Matt Wells, a Texas Tech 15, Florida state without their head coach out there, right, Mike Norval, it wouldn't matter if they could have Bobby Bowden. I guess they still lost by 25 State is Texas A and M. Yeah, Yeah, exactly where you were on Saturday, watching your brother coach Vanderbilt. Against them. It was a good night for the fits of his family. Then he's been a tough night for the Ravens on Monday night. We'll get to that. Next on ESPN Radio Thiss was the number one game that.
How Climate Change Is Fueling Hurricanes And Wildfires
"Last week Hurricane Laura made landfall in Louisiana as one of the strongest storms to hit the region in decades to be clear scientists say climate change doesn't cause a weather event, but it is playing a role in increasing the severity of them to understand why we called climate scientists Catherine Heyhoe in a warmer world hurricanes are not getting more frequent, but they are getting stronger they're intensifying faster they're getting bigger and slower, and they have a lot more rainfall associated with them, and they would've fifty or one hundred years ago Heyhoe Co director of the Climate Center at Texas Tech University. She says a warmer world also affects the size of wildfires in. California and elsewhere since the nineteen eighties due to climate change wildfires have burned over twice the area than they would have normally because of course, you get wildfires out west that's just part of life those ecosystems but climate change the great threat multiplier. It's making them worse Professor Heo taking everything into account you just described we also can't ignore that these events are happening during a pandemic. That's already killed more than one hundred and eighty thousand people just in the United States and I wonder is that also what you're talking about when the Department of Defense views climate change describes climate change as a threat multiplier is that part of it as well? It is. So climate change takes issues that we already have that we already care about, and it exacerbates them are makes them worse issues like poverty even age for example, one of my colleagues her parents live in the Houston area they were very concerned about getting in the car and driving you know when when everybody's evacuating, it could take hours to get one hundred miles away because of corona virus. What if they ended up exposing themselves to Corona virus as they drove in for people who are sheltering in shelters typically quite crowded, we are all vulnerable and climate change is exacerbating the risk that we already face today corona virus included. And if you don't mind my raising this, you've written about being a person who considers herself an evangelical. Christian. And you're also a scientists sounding the alarm about climate change. Some Christians. Do seem to see those things in conflict and you just say that this is not true. You say that these two different commitments are actually in harmony. Could you just as briefly as you can just say why you're absolutely right in the United States and that qualifier is very important. The people who are least concerned about climate change are white conservative Protestants and white Catholics but the interesting thing is. That the most concern people in the United States by denomination are Hispanic Catholics, and of course, the Pope Roten encyclical five years ago explaining why climate change is such global issue. So that sort of shows us hey, what's going on here? It turns out when social scientists dig deeper rejecting climate the reality of climate change and the need for climate solutions is exclusively tied to people who have bought into. A right. Wing ideology that somehow this planet doesn't matter but it does it matters to everyone of us if for Christians at the very beginning of the Bible. It talks about how God gave us humans responsibility over every living thing on this planet as well as how we are to care for those less fortunate than us you know the Bible talks about the widows and the orphans and the poor. And today. Those are the very people being most affected by changing climate. So if we take the Bible seriously, we are out at the front of the line demanding climate action, not dragging our feet at the end. All right. That's Catherine Heyhoe. She's a climate scientist and co-director of the Climate Center at Texas Tech University professor. Hey. Thanks so much for talking to us once again thank you for having me.

The rams that. MAC IS GONNA. Stay that really has nothing to do with them. The fucking bang way but he did you bengals than the eagles they got. Right now listen. If, we can argue the don't kick it there I, still think you kick it because I think he has the leg he proved it. It gets the rams. When he kicked the game winner, he had like a fifty nine yard with like ten yards. But then you understand that the eagles even though they tied yesterday gained a half a game. Zone that division so bad that he's like six nine one. If you don't want to say he should have kicked it which I disagree with but that's fine. I. Come from. They were just running the ball into the line in the middle of the field because you can't put the ball wants his hand. Exactly Carson wentz still lose you. Stay was crazy right now adding spot. "Behind Miami. And Texas gave up a ton of points to Texas Tech. So Miami is in the mix. It's also the kind of thing where even if they lose competitively, they're still in good shape. I don't have to win this game. I think you're right. So I want to listen there, Sir. I've said this before, when they're certain teams in certain sports when they're good, the sports bettor. And what? When Miami is relevant, especially they've got tractors out of jealousy. Then my college football is just a much better better sport. So I believe that you've seen them a lot more than me. I liked him. You really like him? I feel like they're more real than they're not. But we'll see. Ah, right. The Angels moving on from.

Our number, two of the rich Eisen show is on the air our number one it was just a whole bunch of football talk and our number two. I'm not going to be a lot of the same. As. Chris Brockman showed up with his latest interpretation of what Cam Newton wears in. Celebration of of another New England victory. He swore before the season you will come Chris dressed as Cam Newton after every Patriot do my best i. hope you have eleven more different. Outfits because that's how many more winds might be common. I, mean Cam Newton is just a revelation of the twenty twenty season. Revelation could have been yours Chicago that's what I said now I WANNA. It was my take on a you turn the page and trubisky good luck with Foale's Saudi. Worked out for you. But. If you're gonNA, pull the plug on Trubisky, don't you want the best possible option that was sitting out there and to me That's thirty-one-year-old. Cam Newton with a big fat chip on his shoulder looking for that one hundred, million dollar contract that he's playing like he deserves. Oh. Yeah. And Stop, for New England is a visit to Kansas City and that's GonNa be all in weight regardless of what happens tonight and certainly if the Ravens win tonight. I'll break that down that game down for you later on. Michael. Irvin will join us. He's got a podcast. Don't you know? He's he does, yes. I think I inspired him. He did rich is first guest is Stephen a Smith who tweeted into NFL Game Day morning yesterday because Michael Irvin and this is I think this might be some of the material that you will get on the Michael Irvin podcast he said that the Prior. To the cowboys losing Seattle that it looked like the cowboys had. This is one of those moments that they would be able to use the rest of the year that big comeback win. And You know had they won yesterday his narrative would be well, they believe because look what they did against Atlanta that there's no lead that you have. That is safe. And not knowing that. Russell Wilson would have the Cherry on top that Matt Ryan didn't have and that the Atlanta Falcons are giving away leads like Oprah gives away cars look under your seat. You have a twenty point comeback you have a twenty point comeback. Out Cowboys. So Stephen a Smith heard Michael say that that win over the Falcons only going to be inspiring. But also kept Mike, McCarthy undefeated in Dallas. Because you know he never lost their with the packers. So this was his take Stephen a Smith tweeted insane. I'm which you know it's bad because. He's watching us not what's on his own network and Egypt called Michael out it was phenomenal. Just. Phenomenal. So I'm sitting at home this weekend. Okay. And you know I got I got got that to our game day morning zoom and then I'm writing the show for Sunday because I do all my own writing. By the way was that was that? Would you call it? It's not a humble. Fishing. Fishing broke. Do you want me say good job I mean. Housing that come on seriously. I mean, I only watched the third hour fourth our show I mean we didn't get a job in a fourth hour I know Stephen a watch the first. Okay. Run here I'm sitting at home and I'm seeing. Twitter. Talk about how Texas longhorns football is back. Then I'm seeing. Texas longhorns football. Is Not back. And then I'm seeing Texas longhorns football and the entire big twelve conference is dumpster fire. 'cause Kansas State came back on Oklahoma. And Texas Tech and Texas. Are Putting up points on each other but Texas can't match point for point and then Texas comes up with a huge comeback. And I'm like, okay. Now, I just got to put everything down and I gotta tune in and as I turn on that game on Fox. I thought to myself no question. It's a Gus Johnson game. It's gotTA. Be Gus. The way that this is going the way that the scores go and Texas is going into the tie. Now it's our Buddy Timothy B. Tim Brando he's calling. And up and Texas Tech. Decides to after having the. Game tied on them. With nine seconds to go. Common up on fourth down. Decides to call timeout with nine seconds. Left is opposed to one eight. Five more seconds. And put a ball up in the air for a little hail. Mary maybe get yourself a defensive penalty can kick a field goal and win but they call timeout to fast too many points on the board too many seconds on the clock because you can't run around for five seconds and then throw the Hail Mary. It's too much of a risk. They punted. Overtime time hits I hate college football overtime. Hated. Hated hated hated it removes the kicking game not completely out because obviously sometimes feel goals are necessary but it does eventually remove the kicking game because it forces everybody to go for two. If it keeps on going on, put the ball on the twenty five, it's like putting a runner on second base to start extra innings terrible I hate it. I hate it. But Texas scores and..

Penn State Cinderella Story Continues, Pat Chambers discusses his team
"All right. We'd like to welcome in Penn State head coach Pat Chambers One. Eight of his last nine coach chambers. Welcome to the world's greatest podcast with Greenberg dockage. Dan Open things up because he is the big ten Guru Guru. I like it. Hey coach last night what happened. We didn't make implicity the voting go in the basket. That's a big leads with that. That's the truth the balls gotta go in the basket for you to win the game. I mean it was a rock fight. Both teams played extremely hard It gives you all know Brad credit for what they did defensively on Stevens and our shooters and then I was fantastic me. He was hurt for about four or five days there and he comes back and he looked healthy and strong and extra little kicking his step for sure he looked fresh. I think that's why he's able to make any place down the stretch for them. Forget about that that game. You won't eight in a row. You want eight zero at Penn State. You've got sixty wins in two and a half years already. Which is absolutely incredible. Most wins in the three year period. I think if I'm not mistaken in the history of Penn state and he's got a lot of season left. How did this group happened? I guess is the best question each. That's why he loved dockage right. He just wants to talk about the negative sake us right. Oh recent Yay balancing. I was conscious classic. Look I just think Lamar Stephen Staying? The course and Mike Walk and staying the course. The older yet veterans Guys that are loyal. Loyalty is is very. As you guys know loyalties everything these guys committed state committed to not only but the staff at each other the players in that locker room and the program so at Penn State. You GotTa get older and you gotta stay old now. We gotta stay old and Dan you were you. Were there at the pleasure when these guys were freshmen. We've played each state. You knew we building something special. We just have to stay the course. We have to be patient and fortunately city Barbara was patient And that's why you're able to to go through some growing pains and learn and get some shared experiences. And that's why you're able to you know as SEF just said sixteen sixty wins in the last three years. It's a great accomplishment for these kids. Twenty and six Penn State two games out of first place with Maryland. I think I don't think Maryland has an easy schedule. I think this could still get very sexy coach. Talk about Lamar Stevens. His his sidekicks other than Watkins are gone from that game but man is he been good. We'll real steady Really Mature Really grown up In his approach and everything he's doing from from cold cubs yoga to getting it. Sure shot's taking care of his body take and then his leadership ability and autos and in the locker room that practice is a kid. Who's you know? We only got a few weeks left of the season regular season and he still bought into the culture of doing all the little things that we need. Do to keep getting better. And that's been his message. You know he guys what we can get a lot better. We gotTA clean this. We gotTA CLEAN THIS UP CLEVELAND. So if we can do that now you really. GonNa put put ourselves better position. I mean we're a great position now but he wants more. He's hungry for more. I mean he's gotta be up there for for player of the year in this league. I mean there's I know guards it and I know thirty. Counting cash is another straight players. But Lamar Steve has got to be in the conversation. Now you played last night. You've played it for a while now without your second leading scorer Myron Jones. What what does he bring? What's the timetable to bring them back? See Dan I'm learning this thing here. I'm trying to create some news out of this question and that was the kind of newsy question. Dan's radio show now. This is something different dad. We J. for sure. Obviously we're evaluating. We want him to be as healthy as possible before we bring them back on the floor. I think we would be doing him a disservice if we brought him back any earlier. So let's make sure he's as healthy as possible so we can really contribute any safe. You know that's important kids. Safety Ethic is what Penn State's all about But to lose your second leading score and go three and one is about the depth and you guys know this you know. We've never had that type of depth in my tenure. We're talking about Mike Tenure I was never able to go seven eight nine deep and this year. We were able to do that for the most part now. Mj's down guys have been stepped. Brockton has been stepping up tomorrow. Wheelers stepping up Curtis Jones has been stepping up as long as we get contributions from everybody we. We can continue to compete. Continue to get better. Hey you mentioned your Athletic Director Sandy. The importance of for one somebody sticking with someone Santa. Barbara's been amazing Look I Texas Texas Tech. Today we need to do a case study other directors need to watch not jump the gun and go find out what might win the press conference or make the public happy I think it's she's been inside the walls here. She's been inside the program she sees what we're doing a culture wise inside a lock room. She comes to practices. She sees developing our players. And how we're getting better and You know I think it's all pay off both of us. How about the environment? I you know you go to Penn State. It's got this great name obvious identity but I was so. They had some issues with the football situation but the environment. What makes Penn state like when you when you take that job? It's a big job and all those other things it's more money and and that's great now that you're there now that you're having success. What makes it the right place for you? Because let's face it as coaches? You're only as good as last season you can you? Can you know people have short term memories I? It's not an easy job. So what makes it where you say you know what not only can I win but I can sustain it? I mean what's the key to sustaining? Besides just getting players. Yeah. I think it's buying. I think you both would agree with that right. Top top down by into what we're trying to do complete and total investment into making. Sure that look we.

Haden Fry has passed away at the age of 90.
"But Hayden fry we lost an iconic I will figure the other day at age ninety he fought that battle with cancer for a long time twenty seasons in Iowa a hundred forty three wins I had the privilege of seeing some of those wins and covering Iowa you were around him a lot hidden fry came up with this this hokey Texas style dumb as a fox war the sun glasses but boy did he went over that state did me we did he as I've told people the last couple days of this guy could run any fortune five hundred company because he knew who to hire he surrounded himself with great people he trusted them he he he delegated authority and all over your one line of of many that that he told me and I think nineteen ninety seven was I never want to hire an assistant coach who doesn't aspire to be a head coach and I know that's that's that's talking it's easy speak but you look at Hayden's first there were I think in nineteen ninety six or ninety seven you could have a leader maybe nine assistance top and that original staff he put together Wyrick five Amer hall of Famers or will be in the hall of fame notations in the hall of fame very over as Bob stoops bill Schneider in the hall of fame and her courage will be in the hall of fame but then you add in Dan McCarney and Donnie Patterson and bill Miller and later Bret Bielema and Chuck long all these guys reader all of employers are there going to be hall of fame coaches or at least most of them will be and so it and I'm not saying it was easy to wonder will because lockers are just suffered through eighteen nineteen non winning seasons I think there were two five hundred years in there had total lack was part of one of those but beyond that I will football pretty well tank after the the forest Evashevski run in the nineteen fifties and then along comes is Tracy from West Texas and I'm ever bump Elliott telling me after you're hired Frank Lautenberg who was the coach of the year to lido and he bombed and then Bob Cummings a high school coach Massillon Ohio came in and you know pull off a couple big upsets with this sizzle wasn't there and bomb should let me tell you it off I don't get this higher right you won't you won't see her anymore as AT and how ironic would that have been because about Bailey at only hired within a couple years time lute Olson Dan gable and Hayden fry and that doesn't that doesn't include C. Vivian stringer or later George raveling or Tom Davis sure or on on any pick bobbles be to selected as athletic director so bump Elliott was an absolute genius and he and Hayden it had the same kind of delivery Hayden Hayden was a front man Bob was always the guy in the background and they made it work for the better part of twenty years and Bob returned bowls became intercourse utility and do it as long as you want to do and then that prostate cancer reared its ugly head in in in the mid nineties and he struggled and obviously I will football slipped and the range were handed off to his disciple Kerr courage and it took him you know normally and and I will tell you the cupboard was pretty bare in ninety eight I remember I remember the gophers just absolutely kicking of the hard cash in the Metrodome Hayden's last year's last game and he had a tearful postgame press conference and then typically it takes for five years to get a program like Iowa restocked occurrence didn't three and in two thousand one they be Texas tech and clippings very in the Alamo bowl and it's been eighteen holes in nineteen years for Kirk Ferentz walls that time and you know and I I never take it for granted we never should I know Minnesota doesn't think what happened there sure for granted it's it's special to live in that kind of moment and I'm sure PJ's gonna have many years like it like he had this year and just like her Terence he he's obviously not done yet but Hayden was was a marvelous wept he had a character about a man and he understood he identified with the people I want me he came from the agricultural side of Texas and he knew all about farmers and and not only is he a hall of fame football coach would always would always amaze me and what a Namor him to what was your yeah you know having having the gall to change the tiger Harker change to the tiger hawk logo from the from her key with the challenge in the wings and the true arc having having the courage to call the Rooney family and say Hey I want to redo the I will uniforms and I want them to look more like the Steelers with the wide gold lettering and and are running said well go head coach but you better win and that's all he said and then the American each farmers the a and F. B. cal in the farm crisis the transcendent a lot more than I would it was Minnesota it was Nebraska was the farmers in South Dakota Hayden fry understood their plight and out of that came farm aid and millions upon millions of dollars for the for the farm family not not the big corporate farms but it that that's who he was the guy could run for governor and I won one a number of terms but he he thankfully stuck with football and with all the better for it yeah and when you look at the bullet points Gary on the resume of Hayden fry and and certainly again and I icon you brought up the a and F. D. cal I mean a bold stroke of genius a simple move but but he had everybody in that state you know eating out of his hand from that point on and then and then other things he did the pink locker rooms at Kinnick and I think he even if he were still around now would tell you his greatest accomplishment was integrating the Southwest Conference at SMU and he was the head coach there with jury Leviathan jury levias you know put up with a lot of crowd but he didn't got that ball rolling hating it was never afraid to take a chance on a young guy and you know that was the old Southwest Conference days was Arkansas that was taxes that was that was in North Texas at SMU everything was lily white and and he rolled the dice and and he always said that I didn't care what color the young man was he could play football and he could get it done on the academic side he was my kind of guy and and he rolled the dice with jury levias and to this day a jury lawyers she talks about breaking down the color barrier because of Hayden fry and and you know you and I should probably should mention that bullet point first Eric beyond a enough and and you know farm aid and the the tiger hawk logo which is now an international sign you can't walk anywhere in America overseas of somebody doesn't see that may go go arcs and I've heard that so many times Michigan Avenue or OR Broadway but he he just he from a P. R. marketing standpoint you know I've I've told people over the years we've all seen the wizard of oz and and the the human form of the wizard was the snake oil salesman who had the horse with the with the wooden wagon and he was selling the pots and pans the back end of his wagon when the tornado was wrong throne is trying to give Dorothy some philosophical advice about now you need to go back home and be with your parents it looks like a storm coming I think that was Hayden fry the wizard of oz he could he could spend it and and one of my favorite stories is that whenever we came to Minneapolis this is a hard one and and I hope she's doing okay said would come in the booth and and he he I think was Poland at total lex chain a little bit but I think he was as sure as you know are you get there's no way you guys are gonna keep Hayden fry he's going to USC he's going to Notre Dame or is going to the NFL every year he would come in every other year when we come to many many apples for and I wish it would matter should always got that you have been a huge there's no way you're going to keep this guy and and the point is understood how precious Hayden fry was not only as a football coach but in the environment that he was in that as long as he was and I was city I always going to be a winner they may not go to the Rose Bowl every year but he went to three of them in one three big ten championships and eighteen nineteen years yeah a remarkable run I remember covering the nineteen ninety Rose Bowl Iowa in Washington mark Brunell Chuck long it was a fabulous setting in Pasadena at the Arroyo Seiko and and I was since then has has really been able to you know year in year out have the kind of model that the golfers are looking for as far as their football program you know always being contention plan a bowl game in every two or three years maybe have a shot to you know playing a significant bowl game and it's great to reminisce Gary about Hayden fry in those days down in Ireland and certainly he's a legend so thanks for sharing your thoughts Hey my pleasure you know in Minnesota and and I work

Egyptian Vats 5,600 Years Old Were For Beer Brewing
"Is scientific American sixty second science. I'm Suzanne barred some fifty six hundred years ago. People in the Egyptian city of here canopus did something. That's still a very popular activity today. They brewed and drank beer. We know this because archeologists examining the area near the ruins of a cemetery for the elite discovered a structure containing five ceramic. That's that would have been heated from below residues in the vats confirmed that they had once made beer and made that if these five vests were operated the same meantime three hundred twenty five liters produced which is equal to six hundred fifty cans of Budweiser Texas Tech University. Microbiologist Momento al-Massari. He says this ancient beer would've tasted very different from what are modern. Pellets are used to the Egyptian beer makers did use malted wheat and barley in the brewing in process but no one had mastered carbonation yet so the resulting grew was a flat. UNFILTERED malt beverage with a low alcohol content Elmasri colleagues recently sampled thick dark deposits from the herrick novelist fats. The chemical analysis confirmed that they were indeed the product of beer making being and not some other fermented food the tests also revealed other ingredients ancient Egyptians putting their beer the researchers found a high concentration of the amino acid pro lean which is abundant in dates and some other fruits. This result suggests that this could have been used or incorporated in the beer for flavor and maybe to add some sweet notes hops which act as both a flavoring and preservative weren't added to beer until medieval times. They use it hawks who was unknown to they need conditions conditions and we think that the US as it to preserve their beer the residues were indeed high in phosphorous acid a product of barley grains added during the fermentation process process. Phosphoric acid is often used today to prolong the shelf. Life of alcoholic beverages phosphoric acid via barley would have made it possible to mass-produce ask produce beer store it for extended periods and even transport it all consistent with the important role beer played in ancient Egyptian society it not only provided hydration and nutrition but was also part of religious rituals among the elite. The study is in the Journal scientific reports studying ancient beer. It has allowed Elmasri to reflect on the intersection of science and history. I teach a microbiology lab. We grew beer in the lab and the students see the whole permutation mediation process and thinking how engines were able to do a similar thing thousands of years ago. It's a very

"Plus a minus type the maybe in that range, Matt wells a little bit lower on that did a re I look Utah state has had a really good season last year. But I I mean until he made some changes offensively last year. I mean, there was talk, you know, may maybe not hot seat, but there was some rumblings hair after he started nine and five and ten and force first couple of seasons. I mean hadn't had a winning season in his previous three. So I mean, they got the hot guy off a really good eleven into season. I I mean offense only it's it'll be since he made those changes that Utah state last year. I guess it's a decent fit of Texas Tech. But I there's gonna be some struggles there, you know looking. At how Texas Tech's going to be this year. Again, I, I don't see him taking a major step back. But, but I certainly don't think that they're going to take a major stuff for. And I got them right around six wins thirteen returning stars for them. And it's an intriguing fit particularly, you know, when I look at Texas Tech schools, like Baylor, Texas Tech, you know, Washington state schools that are kinda, you know, out in the middle of nowhere, and it's kind of a peculiar recruiting spot, you know, I wanna look at ties and Matt wells doesn't have a lot of ties to the state of Texas. So that's why I thought it was a peculiar higher there. He had a solid season last year. But I, I, I don't know. See, that's a good thing with some of these coaches and the new coaches. Sometimes I get I have some, I'm very aggressive if I like it, and I have some of my biggest pet and then there's others like.

"Text good enough to do this. Oh, you're not picking them. But I'll just tell you. I am. I picked Texas Tech to win a game. Okay. If they do it. It will be a totally nonconventional way because they're twenty eight offense efficiency, obviously, I defensive efficiency, but twenty eighth in offense efficiency, do you know, how many times in the past seventeen years, which is the Kim palmyra where the data's available? How many times in the past seventeen years somebody outside of the top twenty has offense efficiency is one Jim show. Do you Conte's you can once? Okay. They were thirty ninth offense visionary in two thousand fourteen. That's that fluky team. Besides that. Everybody's been inside the top twenty. Now they've landed there remember yet. But still at Texas Tech and getting inside what happens. But right, right. They can win the game. They win the game. They landed outside the top one day. Well, yes. So only one time in seventeen years as a team outside of the top twenty insufficiently won the national championship. What's even crazier is that in twelve of the seventeen years? So all but five times the team's been inside the top ten. So Texas Tech is way off that Mark. But you gotta give them a realistic chance because of the defense. I mean, I'll just keep it as simple as I can keep it if you can frustrate Michigan the way frustrated Michigan and not just Michigan, but John beeline coach Michigan, and then do it to Mark few. And then do at the time is Michigan state. And by the way, two of those offenses Michigan's wasn't but top ten offenses in America, just over just humiliated them, embarrass them. If you can do it to them, you can do it to. Julia. I've got give us a score Texas Tech winning the game fifty nine. Fifty seven. All right. So we both have the winning team with fifty nine point. I've cracking the sixty point barrier. Can't wait for this game. As we wrap the podcast. I have to know, you know, for so many years perish was he was resistant not defiant, but resistant about doing podcast person to person, and we did the last one got great response. Also want to say. I I really appreciate I don't say this to be like, hey, people notice me there were a lot of people that came up. I'm sure you've got the same. That said really love the podcast like, that's that's genuinely appreciated when you find Perisher myself. We we are we have thankful that you listen. And we thank you so much for all of that. So thank you continuous. And when we get the off season pairs resistant, and he told me, you know, what it was such a great podcast in person. This do one live podcast to get really comfortable. You've done this whole frequent podcast, and you've been in socks you don't even have your shoes on or in a public place. What are you doing right now? And you do this on airplanes. Do you want the story this line apple socks, by the way? So in New York last week one night or one morning. It's dark in my shoes off as you should. And I've got my radio equipment in my room. And it comes in this hard case and the hard case was lying in the floor open, and I stepped on the edge. Of it. And when I stepped on the edge of it, the hard case came up on my leg as the worst and the worst, and it did that to me my God. Oh my God. And it did that to me. I'm wounded. That's do. I look like a war hero. Do I look like a war hero? Describe me as a war hero who also happens to host a podcast. Oh, man is a gash scabbed over that is no exaggeration..

"Scott Kelsey looking looking like he was having. I don't know. But I think his reputation is a man who has a good time. So he was wearing some sort of Baz deal on. I don't know what was going on there. But but congrats on Texas Tech you move along. Michigan state. I mean, I I wrote a quick call to me the one of the two or three take from the game was I guess in light of the defeat. I was like, you know, what I know what Tom is talking about here. I know what he was saying he wants that second national championship for self validation. Now, I still don't need it for him. But he's now two in six and national semifinals. He is now oddly become as tach te to the notion that he loses on the on the first Saturday, the final four as the fact that he's won a national championship. I'm not taking him down a peg at all you gotta get there to be two in six. You gotta make it eight times. But it is become a little bit of a weird thing that Michigan state just it's just bumping up against something here and keeps falling short. This was the only time as we have mentioned on a couple of previous podcasts that Michigan state lost in the Nash. Semi final when it was the favourite slash and or higher Sita team. That was the case here. Michigan state was the betting favorite didn't come through there. Ran up against what his rating as the best defense in at least eighteen nineteen years. So there's no great shame in it. But it is it is just become a thing. Right. It's become a thing with this makes fun of four hall of Famer, plenty of respect. But I bet you Michigan state fans are just there's a level of frustration that setting in. It's like we're not even getting to the title game. We did it once since we wanna and by the way, we ran up against that epic awesome Oneida UNC team where we almost had no chance. Anyway, even though the game was played there in Detroit had no chance and I remember Tom speaking before that game the sun the day before the game. And he was candidates. You could be he said, listen if they play well, we're not gonna win like better than us in. He said all the he's they have better players than us. They have a better coach than us. And you gotta say you better say, they got a better coach if you're gonna say they got better players, right? He's like he's like if they play well, we won't win. But we have a neck for for making people not play. Well, and so we're gonna hope that we can we can play. Well, maybe make them not place. A well. And then maybe we'll have a shot. Then of course, they go out and get by twenty right? But banging on Tom for being now one for eight when getting to the final four in terms of national championships two and six in the National Symphony three and seven overall if you include national semifinals and title games to me. That's like when people reference LeBron James record in the finals. Good. Good parallel. They say they say you LeBron's three and six in the finals. That's okay. I mean, he's been there nine times. That's amazing and in. Okay, three and sixty nine many times LeBron James has had the favored team when the final started. I would say two three two two the answers to. So if you look at it from a win where you supposed to win it when we're not supposed to win it perspective. He's overachieved in the NBA finals, even if he's three and six and NBA finals and same thing with Tom Izzo. I think he's never as you pointed out on the last podcast been favored to win the championship..

"Five six days here. Full rest before the Texas Tech game. I. Bottom line smart. He's going. His catches Winston goes. He is the straw that. Stirs the drink he gets open shots from self in his teammates. You look at all the key shooting metrics from three pointers to mid range jumpers near proximity shots. Total shots even free throws Sparty ranks top twenty five and all five of those categories. They really shoot the ball. Well, the one concern we had coming into the turn. It was Michigan say turns of all over a little bit right there. One hundred seventy six in the country and turnover percentage, they go out and they face a team that they've seen multiple times in Minnesota. And they turn it over twenty two more times again there, and you thought maybe that would be a concern that was the lone concern in the LSU game for us. But it seems like Winston stepped up his game. When the moments got bigger only seven turnovers against LSU, and and Trump wanders Zabol hawk only seven turnovers against Duke again trae Jones is a ball hawk. I think that's the key here. We know Texas Tech loves depression the ball turnover their length in the country and turnover percentage. Texas Tech as you alluded to loves to switch defensively when they do it's imperative you don't turn it over. And you get the ball. Download to tell mental ward goings once those guys get the ball. I think they have to make tech paver switching right? They're gonna have smaller guys on them. And those guys are gonna have to protect the ball. They're gonna have to be quick with their movements in they're gonna have to finish and be efficient. I think that's big. You know, Torri goings the Saint John's transfer he has been ridiculous on the back line. He is like the ultimate racer this season. He's been that in this tournament. You look at tech. They block nineteen percent of shots the rim, but their little their little lanky down there and Owens is long doesn't have a ton of. Kinda size down there. And you look at some of the at rim. Percentages tech allows fifty five percent shots the rim to go in. So I think that's that's key for Sparty. Don't turn it over get their bulky stronger. Guys. Download to take advantage of the smaller guys on them. That's that is going to be the key to this. Texas Tech has to rebound MRs hundred ninety eight in the country and defensive rebound rate Sparty top twenty five offense rebound percentage..

"March madness bracket go on record of put Ross Ramsey on the hot spot. So I'm going to tell you mine, I've got Duke into the Sweet Sixteen but get knocked off by Virginia Tech. And you may say I'm crazy Virginia Tech beat do. Going February twenty six the Michigan state and taken the east bracket is the number to see. That's when I guide is Owen, his boys Gonzaga going all the way to the elite eight only to get knocked off by Texas Tech, also Murray state beating more kit. I'm I'm telling you history right now that yet to unfold I got Kentucky going into the elite eight in the mid west only to get knocked off in the final four by UNC. My eventual champion there UNC, I do think Kansas will get knocked off by Auburn in that bracket as well. In the south Tennessee, all the way to the final four Virginia to get knocked off by Tennessee in the southern bracket. Oh, you over Mississippi State, Oregon with the upset over Wisconsin. And my Cinderella. Ella is UC Irvine UC Irvine to knock off Kansas state in the first round advance over Oregon only to be defeated by. Virginia and told you about the other side of the bracket also gonna just take Saint Mary's over Villanova. Because like a good Cinderella story. He's with us each week. His name's Mike bazaar. Is there a way might bazaar to hack the tournament? Well, I mean, there's people involved that's harder. I mean, there's always like Pete Rose. Right. I think this is when you get into the social aspect of it you could try to get a team to throw a game. But you gotta convince everybody on the team. So there's gotta be a lot of money there. Yeah. But I mean, it'd be possible. Typically that would get around in college athletics. I would think it would it's a little harder in pro. You gotta you know, he had to keep Pete Rose, quiet and college athletics, you got to keep a whole team in a coach in a bunch of other people on the same age the guys at the end of the bench. Yeah. Keep them quite let's they wanna sing quite the same mill ticket. How you've been doing? I'm fantastic, man. I can't complain life. Grand lead that you're back out. And another addition know that we've come to be termed as this this segment the tin foil segment telling you, but there are solutions even bizarre salute. There we need to be solved. That's it. I'm telling you. So we get out on some limbs. Here we do. And I think the hard part is everybody thinks tinfoil hat. The problem is in like, I was talking to my little brother last night. He was asking me advice for home security stuff like what's overkill for his router and some of the other things, and we were talking through it. And I said, you know, you're wanting to use a VPN at your house, which I think it's great use VPN if you're out in public on public WI fi, whatever. But what's the point? You have Google everything. Google already knows everything about you. Like, they're the worst offenders the BPM yet virtual private network, so VPN in crypts the data on your phone or your laptop and sends it through a tunnel essentially to whatever server you're connecting to. And then let's go anything between your phone and. Server can't read the data. So if you're on Starbucks public wifi. I can probably see what's going on with your computer because we can see it. But if you PIN you kind of have this encrypted tunnel in it helps protect you. So VPN's are great when you're out of work or out of your house, or whatever. But you know, he was a little overkill on on it. I think to try to do it at his house. But on that note, if you go look there's a couple of easy VPN's, you can get that are like Nord VPN and a few others. You can buy an app, it's a few bucks a month more. There's a free one from cloudflare. If you look it up, and like, you can install it on your phone..

"It's a very small number rounding error by a lot of people around here digital dust is one of the phrases for it. And you know, it's a small amount, but it's a very significant program. And it's a significant high profile fight between. Lean tech. You know, maybe a m maybe sharp, maybe, you know, all of those kinds of things, you know, that story better than I do. It's it the profile of it is pretty high. But you know, Jones short better than I do. How often does he lose on something like this? Oh, everybody loses. I mean, and you know, the. The thing about this is the legislature is going to look at it and make decisions about whether. Whether they really care about this and how much they care about it. And which side they're on, you know, when you look at it as a legislator, you know, most of the legislature didn't go to a n m and didn't go to Texas Tech. I mean, some of them certainly did some of them certainly represent those schools, and they're, you know, they're well represented up here. But a lot of members are just like, you know, I don't know do we need a vet school or not. And you know, so they're going to be arguing that case and not arguing the politics. Some of them are going to be looking at the politics and saying, well, you know, I think it's better for me to go this way or that way. There's a you know, that was kind of interesting it's politics in a Petri dish. It's you know, it's right there in front of you. And you get to watch how sausage is made. You know, usually, those kinds of fights are very quiet there in the back room. Nobody sees them. I I certainly don't think that's going to be the situation with the Texas Tech that school speaking speaking of Texas Tech with Ross Ramsey. You took him do the elite eight and your bracket. I did. That's a good basketball team. You're going to say. The final four. Because they run into something called Gonzaga, which I picked to win the whole thing. They could they could through you know. I mean who knows I just, you know, I'm I'm so accustomed to doing my brackets like, you know, like most of the people, I know I do my brackets they play the first weekend. My brackets are completely blown. And then I'm just about just watching basketball. And I thought I'd throw it up before before it blew up. Just so I could have a moment when it was perfect. You're probably not accustomed talking about your brackets on the radio either. But I know people like some Ross Ramsey love for the red raiders. So appreciate that that it's a good basketball team. Well, yeah, we'll probably take that excerpt out I'll I'm going to fly out the tomorrow afternoon in I'll let Chris beard. "If you don't do anything except. Glance at scores. The following day, you go, okay, Duke, went out and handle, Texas Tech. But Duke did not go out and tech. That was a a competitive game basically start to finish and a game that it looked like Texas Tech was going to win probably more minutes than it. Looked like Texas Tech was was was going to to lose you mentioned trae Jones, and he does not get the attention of the other three freshman for obvious reasons. The other three fresher might go one two three and NBA draft. And I do think trae is gonna be a first round pick. But he's not probably not going to be a lottery pick certainly not going to be a top five pick. I'm not gonna get hyperbolic here and talk about how he's just as important as anybody else because I'm not sure that true the RJ pretty damn important to me what he scored thirty points in zion's when he's got the highest PR and the history of whatever looked pretty important to me. But he is very important trade Jones as to what they do. He's not as heralded. But he runs that team. He's tremendous defensively. K talked about this late Thursday about how trade defensively in terms of just knowing where to be. And running things on that end of the court is as good as any freshman. He's he's ever had if not any point guard that he's ever had. I don't think it's an accident that trae Jones is a member of this team. And dukes defensive efficiency rating is third in the country. Remember this team that was so bad defensively super talented, but so bad defensively last season. They had they had a plays on. They were very good last season in spite of what they were on defense right now, they're number two offense efficiency number three. And defensive efficiency. They really are terrific sitting here now at eleven and one heading into the portion of their schedule. They still do have one more nonleague gained that's going to be against Saint John's in February early February. That's Saint John's team that is still undefeated at this point eleven oh under Chris Mullin, but eleven one heading into the portion of your schedule. I don't know if you're much you quote would've taken that. But certainly not a bad place. And it's they're they're doing well overall do I mean, I'm stating the obvious there. But I'm talking about when when they've faced Texas Tech and even a loss against if you eliminate what RJ it was doing the end of the game Duke, very well wins that game this has been beyond expectation. It's. It's almost a trait thing to say GP, but it is important. Remember that the star force them here. The coretec there. They've never played this level of basketball before there is no guarantee that they're going to be awesome. They're yes. They're highly rated, but you just don't know as a collective how they'll perform I even point to last season you can point to we're going to get to Kentucky here shortly. You can have freshmen that are highly rated even ones that are highly rated like Zion and RJ were if you look at the case of scallop Kentucky. There's there's never the guarantee that you'd going to happen. The way that it's happening for Duke. So it is pretty notable too to see how they've been this consistent overall and how they could win that kind of game. It looked like a looked like a great environment. There you obviously had trae young Jimmy Butler. I'm sure if you other celebrities are on hand to watch them real quick entree Jones his numbers. He is the textbook case of when you watch Duke play like I do think that he has nights. And we'll have more nights where he is the most important valuable person on the floor. Just because what he does. But he's averaging eight point seven points five point six times, three point three boards. He's he's shooting it forty five cent from the field. Which is you know, it's okay. He's only thirty one point eight from three. It's not terrible. It's not great overall. But he's he had six deals something like that. He he makes a lot of really good plays in moments when they need them and between him, and then Jack white who is now I've seen Jack white and at least three or four games make big three pointers come up with some big rebounds..

"Larson who wants who wants to mandate at least follow the Bill to require two state agencies who happen to have football teams, Texas university of Texas to play their game on an annual basis that to say the legislature king get involved in sports when they want to when you think about a law. That says if you're gonna compete in a major five conference with with public institutions in Texas like Texas Tech, like university of Texas university, Houston etcetera that yours athletics departments at private schools are not the whenever somebody files. A public information requests. Then you've got to you've got to meet that request that you are no longer outside the bounds of public information requests. In talking about like TCU's and the Baylor's of the island. I mean, the controversies at Baylor, for instance, in how if you know, in my view had something like that happened at Texas Tech you could fill the lower bowl with the hard copies of requests. It would come in from media agencies. But Baylor there's been a lot of talk about art browse here and there and the coaching search, but nobody knows what happened where are you on that? Do you think that they ought to pony up on public information's at providence petitions does that give a leg up to others on a competition basis? Well, I'm on comfortable with with the private schools that able to hide behind that. I think that that's obviously when your institution, and you get money from the state to operate that's kind of the rules UP play by it it. It's tricky. Because in one way, I mean, if they're not taking public funds that they should have to play by the same rules. But if we're going to speak to if we're going to speak to the fact that does that it helped TCU and Baylor did that did that help Baylor not help to us? But that allow Baylor to operate the way they did for many many years, which was a bit sketchy. I think you know, that that's that's I think fair assumption based on people not being able to get into business, you know, in figure out exactly what happened. And why happened how it happened and all that stuff? So because you know, schools they the providence petitions they had behind that a lot. But you just can't you can't they're not bound. To have to tell you anything. They don't want to that part is tricky when it comes to the controversies that we've seen certain places I look forward to. Eventual state Senator Chris level fouling Bill, the private schools are no longer exempt. There you go. Thanks for crossing the fence with me there, buddy. And have a great time on your trip in. "Yes. I have I have have you. Game at the garden. No we were out there at Seton Hall last year play lost that game. But I did not make that trip. I was still doing football related stuff at the time. But the raiders went out to the garden last year and played in the Under Armour event played seat hall that was the only non conference loss that they that they had. So is this is this a true for the level? Families going is everybody in for this trip. My now for Miami, though. But I know I'm talking about I'm talking about Madison Square Garden do. Okay. Yeah. My my wife and kids in my parents are making that trip with the that they're going to go out there and my in laws are going. I think a lot of tech fans and whatnot are gonna make the trip out there. I was at New York's plan time around Christmas time. So it should be fun. But it in and that's a deal we've seen what Duke is able to do so far that's one of the deal for Texas Tech. It's kind of a free spin of the wheel. You know, if you go and compete and win you're gonna get a lot of praise and accolades and deservedly, so you lose that game that that was the expectation, and and you're not going to get hammered for for a loss there like it'll be a good loss as the way that this stuff will get factored in, but but Chris beard will have his guys ready for Memphis, Duke. And we'll just kinda see what happens. So I look up and there's this new thing called net rankings. In Texas Tech men's basketball is number three. What is in net ranking level? They used to used to us. They called RPI ratings power index. It had all these different metrics involved with this is basically a newer version of that. They wanna know, you know, again, did you win? How that did you win where was this game play, and they wait different than wait it differently. If you win away from home purchase, if you do at home, and by how much win by all of these things it's just kind of formula or they put a lot of different metrics into this deal. And it gives them a pretty good indication on on what team is really getting done out there because not everybody plays everybody. Right. And everybody's got different non conference schedules and some tested each other more than others, but bottom line is. Yeah, you wanna be ranked really high this deal right exit tick is and it speaks to what they were able to do in Kansas City because the recent direct so high is because how good USC had been and continues to be an the set when the Brassica. And so that the crazy thing is Memphis is not having a very good year three and three I think coming into this game. And there are PI kind of member was going to be around the to hundreds. So this will kind of actually hurt you when you play them from a numbers standpoint. That's just again that when you schedule teams, do do it months and months in advance you kind of feel for what they all are. But Memphis could in fact hurt your your ranking? And all that even if you win the game. I think I'm making sense. There was this game scheduled while tubby was still at Memphis. No, this was actually scheduled. I wanna say the last six to nine clouds, but this is fairly recent. Yeah, they put this together. Either last spring last summer is they start in basketball skills, very different than than than football. When these conversations football scheduled for, you know, decade out, it seems like now, that's kinda the way it goes. The basketball is pretty much year to year deal. Now tech will have a pretty good feel for what a vent the play in the play in Vegas next year that they're looking to play and maybe the Bahamas the your after that some of those events are kinda scheduled for out. You don't even know who's going to be in those events the other teams, but some of these just single game type deals. These are on a done just months before the season starts. Yeah. Okay. So level cross the fence with me, and let's talk politics and sports for just second. The Texas legislature bills are beginning to be filed. And then they'll play with that other thing for about three months. And and then it just goes into the big pile of of other toys, Charlie wanted a a put the video up on Twitter and Facebook, I think we re tweeted it through the show. He wanted a Hoke that could smash cake in his little head. He's just turned five five convenient locations across hub city. Five years running Charlie just turned five Br. Brings this to mind. They wanted to hope that in his mind. There was a Hoke that a robotic Holt that could smash cake, and I had to tell them I couldn't find anything like that in. This is the box equivalent of. Birthday gifts. We just went and got him a big oil foot toll incredible hulk in Charlie we got got him a little cake and Charlie everybody's saying him happy birthday in. Then you raise incredible hulk way up high in brought it down on the cake one two. And after the second time and said, okay. Okay. Exactly. What the plate the bust up in the cousins is and go everywhere brought he brought incredible Holt down four times on that cake. Five year old little Charlie. Lots of scoop, we're going to stick with the Texas Tech coaching search for for a bit of the program today with other fring Chris level. It's going to be on red raiders sports. That's what I've been logging onto all day long. Those guys are on top of it enjoyed their insights. I I will say that. I don't swerve out the my lane into the coaching search thing at my lane is the politics, but politics is what makes organizations and institutions work. It's it's the power. It's the movement and the practice in many ways an institution organization, that's my intrigue in the coaching. Search is to look at where power is where it's going and who's in control who's not in what's going on behind the scenes. And because Texas Tech football such a big part of west Texas spend, the time that I do on it, and whether or not your sports nother not of the enjoy the coverage that we give level coming up here in about ten minutes from now, and then our friends, Sarah, self war brick. It's been a long time since we did a regular gate update here on the program, but we're going to have sir self Warburg on in. The thing that I'm gonna get into immediately is into the unmet expectations. Are premeditated resentment Kirby hocutt had oppressor on Monday in which he talked about elite in look, I'm the say this Kirby hocutt Nuff said it, and I'm going to say again, I think he's the most powerful official in Lubbock Texas that and maybe for large part of the region. I think that he has proven himself. Those who went in nabbed him from Miami have proven their salt over the I would've never thought that ill. It was a long ways off eight years ago. When are we didn't have to times to rub together? But now, we have eight football tickets and we've got six basketball tickets men's basketball tickets, and that's a budget priority. Now speaks to Kirby hocutt, especially the basketball end. So. But Kirby hocutt. Said something in his press conference in it was that word elite. We're going to be elite in whenever people think about elite. They may think along the lines of Notre Dame in Ohio State urban Meyer, a Nick Sabin in Alabama. I I don't believe that anybody heard him say the words elite and thought well, we're going to get Nick Sabin. But they did think, hey, maybe that Bob stoops thing is a possibility maybe we are going to go get a Hoeger son or a leak share..

"Show with stugatz on ESPN radio. Are you sad to think of the cliff Kingsbury era is being over at Texas Tech GAM, Sanford, Texas Tech? How you get rid of that guy? I mean, he's everything to that school. He's your identity. I mean, he really is. Let's win or lose. You always had the best looking goat in college football. That's it coach willing to tell you how he used flirtation with single moms and had bottle service at practices. Brought over. Yes. Yes. All of the fun stuff that kings, very represents as swaggering fun guy gone with a thirty five and forty record. That was just recently extended didn't they just first of all this is so funny to me that you tell me that they don't have money in this sport. But they just recently extended Kingsbury, then they said never mind about that. And then on top of that that that extension had a buyout clause in it right buyout clause where he had to give where anyone at that time. It was hotter. Pro candidate the idea of him leaving for another school. They had to put a clause in a bio claw, Dan. But you know, there's nothing more grievous in the sport of college athletics. Then having a coach go into a season as a lame duck. You can't have that you always have to extend. I don't think there's ever been a head coach in college football big time college football that's entered the final year of a contract that hasn't gotten the extension. They always. End up getting an extension before they get fired. That's the deal. It's a racket, and they don't have money. They don't have money. Just for the coaches had paid the kid's saving helicoptered into the into the field. The other day it rained. What do you expect them to do? Exactly, let nature. Tickets course. What you gotta do. Get that feel dry. I tell you what dammit Texas Tech the next coach is going to be thirty five and forty anyway, you might as well have Kingsbury, right? I mean, any coach coaches Texas Tech is going to be thirty five and forty right roughly gamma put it on the poll is any coach who coaches at Texas Tech gonna be thirty five and forty after seventy five game. There are some local reports out there near Lubbock owner, Mike Leach might be tossed around as a name, which is there's a lot of baggage there. I don't even know how that happens, but I did watch the apple Cup. And I saw it snowing and Mike Leach offense, probably well. What I loved I loved. I knew when I saw that box score. I'm like, wait a minute. Wait a minute. Nobody actually kept Mike Leach from five hundred passing yards with a scheme. Right. That had to be, you know, seven thousand mile an hour winds in the snow and then oh, yeah. There's the Leech achilles heel. There. It is there's zero rushing yards in a game hurt ya when you're playing Washington. Fifteen not gonna do it. Mike Leach was great there. I should I should take that statement back. I mean, he was eighty four and forty three Tommy Tucker. Ville was third twenty seventeen. I had no idea Tommy Tucker Ville was ever the head coach at Texas tag. What do you associate him with? What Auburn I think he was a he was in between. And then he left Texas Tech for Cincinnati. Is it big stain on the Texas Tech job is timing tub? Ville. Is that the funniest name in college football, Tommy, Tucker, Ville it? Yes, or no. It sounds like a toy train in a in a children's book..

Some analysis on Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes, and who's going to last the longest in the league in what they're staying power is. Thank you Daniel for what sounds like some ineffective illness music in the background or maybe the portion right before you start seeing all the drug doubt elephants there on Dumbo. Have you guys timeout? Let's refer just second as a Dan the four young kids. Nine. Well, now eleven. Nine nine in four about turn fought. I've done the Disney thing I've done the original Disney thing, can we talk for just a moment about how crazy the old. Disney movies are whenever you back and watch them Nokia. How did that not give me nightmares? Like the kids have been raised on. You got a friend in me like the Toy Story stuff and the filled. Good narrative. Those will like you go back, and you read Grimm's fairytales. I don't know how we got there. Just hold on. We'll get him with level here in about six minutes from now. But you go back, and you read Grimm's fairytales, and you understand why he'll the Americans went back and modified those old Germanic in British very tells for like people eighty and things didn't end well and like low kid did something wrong. In crow comes and eight sounds is like the original Hansel and gretel. Like, that's some serious stuff. But you go back even now you watch like the original Pinocchio with the the boys being held off to in by the way sa- great political analogy today, but I'll refrain in kind of stick with where I'm going. Where they get hold off to pleasure island, and they all turned into jackasses. And like the human trafficking involved there in all the sudden like today that would never be Disney could never produce that movie today. Lourdes boss cigars and the equivalent of Pinocchio keystone beer in then Dumbo win the elephants on parade. Like, I've never been stoned my life, but I could just magin how hallucinogenic it would have been to go in and watch that like watching those old movies now is kind of crazy town, and I call him old because quite frankly, I think me and a large portion of this audiences old the old Disney movies. I don't think kids could handle them today. Just like we wouldn't have been able to handle the original Grimm's brother Grimm's fairytales, whenever they're call really really explicit stuff. So that's just knob survey Shen from dad. So last night Halloween. I don't know how your Halloween went many places in Texas. It's wet the further north you get the colder got in. It was certainly coke last night. The kids duked it out my two in played -able t rexes, and we had Zelda in king Kupa the youngest is really absorbed right now and king Kupa. So that's what we win as in. Can. I just say something is somebody who didn't drink a lot in college. So I don't have a wide understanding of alcohol on the whole like, I'm pretty standard like bourbon guy, whenever you know. I'm gonna have a cocktail last night. We were we did like little pre-game and a house and then went out. And we're gonna get in the sports thing in just a moment. But we do a little pre game. And I get there right after the show race over grab bike or to eat a couple of slices of pizza and look around and there's some beer, and then there was like this grapefruit vodka then. We talked about this with a little bit on Thursdays show with Tony, George Texas Tech linked to or two and a half out there in the market ole miss was a favourite back in the spring and summer, but now Texas Tech, the home favourite. Again, you know, they're not getting that full standard three that we would expect to see in Lubbock. And I think I do have them all with a three point home field advantage, so ole miss still would be favored on a neutral according to what the market says. Not sure what your thoughts are on that rich. But I know that you've got some dots on the total for this game. All right. Well, Texas Tech has always known for their hotline offense. Just SCO, outscore, outscore, outscoring outscore again, don't worry about stopping them. Just get the last session and win the game this year. They've lost a lot on offense, but their defense actually has a lot of experience. And it's strange to think that Texas Tech may actually be a defensive team. Now, I'm hesitant to say how good defensively, since it's the big twelve and. You know are, are they going to be TCU good on defense? Or are they just going to be better for Texas Tech, which could still mean just middle of the pack, but it sounds like they're going to try to slow things down a little bit with a little bit more. Rushing up. They're able to stop ole miss a little bit more often than I don't think they're gonna reach the total sixty seven right now. Well, I like what you brought up my Texas Tech because again, you know you, everybody has these narratives about teams coming into seasons and they just sort of automatically expect status quo. The team like Texas Tech, you automatically expect status quo, but I think David gives us a really fantastic higher here. He's now in his fourth season. So he's been able to bring in some more talent and this was a depth shy. I don't wanna say talentless defense, but it was certainly lacking. You'll some explosive players, some guys that can make, you know, generate negative plays. This is defense that improved by thirteen or by eleven point three points per game. Last year. One point three yards per play again, not. Say they're wouldn't be TCU or Oklahoma or Texas or something like that on defense. But if they can be competent here, I do think that totals will be a little bit too high for this team. There may be an adjustment period. I like Gibbs. I liked any. He's now got you know, upperclassmen that he recruited to this program. I may be onto something there and that maybe a couple of weeks trend where the books have a hard time catching up. Right? Yeah, Texas text. Total number is always a little inflated and ole miss. It's kinda gotten that way in the past to some of their all kinds of players that they've had, especially receiver. Or one more game on a touch on here with rich and that's navy taking on Hawaii. This is a fascinating lines me, I, I mean, I had this line nineteen and a half going into week zero. I gave Hawaii point and a half adjustment up because their offense looked pretty good. When you win a seventeen point favorite on the road, you deserve some kind of bump in my power ratings. Now this numbers all the way down to ten. And I don't know if this is a setup from the wise guys that want to see if they get a little bit of public backing, the drive this down to nine and a half or just wait until game day and get the ten with the the biggest limits of the week. But why he has no home field advantage. I don't care that maybe has a long travel from Annapolis, especially with this being week one, they've already been there. There's a naval presence in Hawaii to begin with at the very least military presence that I know there's a rivalry between the branches of the military, but still when navy's playing Hawaii, you know, I mean, you may want an exciting with navy there and that one I. Can't believe this line rich. I just I don't understand why it's going the way it is. No, I don't either. I mean last year you look at Hawaii having allowed five point three yards per carry..

"I can understand why we were joking beforehand. The big twelve is known for high powered offense. You guys are going to be known for that as well. And I realized the cynics out there are concerned a little bit about the defensive side of the ball. You see them in practice, give us a scouting report on the other side. Well, Texas Tech writer, you Texas Tech, you hear about yours. I well defensively, I what I can tell you is coach crime is the expert on his side of the football, but we are where challenged every day right now physically affront front with the run game, we're challenged even know. We're blessed it wide receiver. The secondary's don't a great job of of competing and having a battle back and forth. Everyday and practices is making us better. And you know, my, my personal opinions, we are. We are much better defensive football team right now. Then maybe we were a year ago. Speaking of year ago, coach, everyone was acutely aware of fifty four weeks ago. The change at ole miss and watching coach. Luke come in and leading this team with a with a lot of great assistance. And a lot of character on the football team through a times was difficult, but ended extremely well help us better understand your boss in. Illnesses, head, football, coach, you know, Matt, Matt, Luke is is. You couldn't have a better leader right now for for this program. I mean, he, he has his deeper roots here in Oxford and in ole miss and in this football program, and this university's you could possibly have and he comes to work every day with that passion..

Luke come in and leading this team with a lot of great assistance and a lot of character on on the football team through what time it was difficult but ended extremely well help us better understand your boss in almost head football coach, you know, Matt, Matt, Luke is is. You couldn't have a better leader right now for for this program. I mean, he he has his deeper root here in Oxford and ole miss and in this football program, and this university's you could possibly have and he comes to work every day with that passion. You see it. He wears it on his sleeve, it's infectious. It rubs off on the coaches. It rubs off on the players. You wanna coach art form. You wanna play hard form and I think everybody believes his message. He believes the culture that he's, he's building here and you know, he's going to give it everything he has every day. And I think the players, the coaches feel like they want to return the same. And it is such an interesting story. And coaches come in all different shapes and sizes. As you know, you've dealt with many in your storied career. When I mean, what I heard from, you sounds like what a player would say. I'm fascinated by the trickle down and I know you've explained it, but I'm fascinated by, but by what he means when he's in that room with you, it's one thing to be on the field. But when you're in when you're in the staff meetings, which he like, well, when you get up and go to work and I can always speak for myself. But I, I think. When you get up and you go to work and and you know that the boss when you get there is going to be fired up. He's going to be passionate. Everything is well thought out. Everything is organized in everything means the absolute most to him when it has to do with with our program. You know, you're inspired and motivated to work for for a coach like that for a person like that. And you know, he's giving it his effort to leave this program and you believe in the direction he's taking it. And so when you have that type of leadership, at the top coaches go into their positional rooms with the same passion and the same motivation. And and that's how it winds up acting trickling down to to our players. And I would say it's a credit to our players a very high character locker room, and these guys go to work every day. And you know, they've been through a lot, and I think they're right now just very, very excited about continuing to prepare for Texas coach. Thank you for. Taking time. I know it is a busy time when you're running an offense like that and getting ready for the first game, but we deeply appreciate you sharing your time and especially with the audience. Well, I appreciate the invite. We'll see you on September first. Thank you. Coach Longo the offense coordinator at ole miss. We'll continue with more. We've had a busy show, coach, Brittany Murphy others to come and your phone calls eight, five, five, four to seven to eight five to listening to Paul finebaum show podcast back great conversation there with coach Brett mcmurphy as well. Let's get back to the calls and Andrei is up next good afternoon, Andre. Doda a great interview with a Briton Mark. What, what, what would get down to brass tack? "Two, four. Well, here's the thing about the dunkers that's been inspirational to me. I didn't realize that if you dunk a couple times, you get the lifelong membership card to the dunker commuted. Yes, because I took piano lessons and I had a recital, but I'm not abuse edition. Yeah, but guess what? I don't think you played anything PNO nearly as good as that Todd that I don't did a gay four lists actually by Beethoven is fantastic. Yeah, bet. When other people do it, I was pretty good. First name Bomani is Baker Mayfield before winning the Heisman. It, Oklahoma, Browns rookie. Baker Mayfield was a walk on at Texas Tech and enu Fox Sports documentary called all the way up. Mayfield spoke his piece about cliff Kingsbury his old coach. Let's listen. Listen, I had a great relationship. We're open. We talked a lot. We going back and forth from opinions on what plays that I liked and all that kind of played into factor. And that's realize that that was the right spot from me, but it felt like I was going to be at home. From being the guy forgo chains berry. And then when I got hurt, it just changed a little bit not a little bit lot. All of a sudden it was as if I hadn't played for them, hadn't done anything for them. It was just different. That's I got hurt. Bomani who is that a worse? Look for Baker cliff Kingsbury. I kind of feel like nobody. I mean, he got treated like a wellcoll and who got hurt. He got replaced by Davis Webb who is now the NFL Davis Laura came Davis Webb by the way who then transferred to Cal because he got replaced by Padma hopes right. Also keep it by right before Kingsbury got Texas Tech. He goes Johnny, Manziel, apparently kings various pretty good at this quarterback thing and says some level. But the thing about Mayfield is he doesn't let anything slide knows the fuel that drives him and it's so we'll probably be the fire that engulfs him. So I am hesitant to get on Baker Mayfield because we all saw how treated Colin coward when he was invited into studio masterful. His defensiveness is masterful. There is no question about that, but I need more specifics. Like if you're going to come out here and say that cliff Kingsbury did you wrong in a way that was at all atypical or special? Give. How we know college football coaches or football coaches in general, at any level, treat the disposability of their athletes. I'm going to need to know more. Was it just that they got hurt? Well, it's I think it's not just that he got hurt you gotta remember Mayfield as the first walk on ever to start at quarterback as a true freshman, we say, walk all he says starter, right? So he feels like I was the starter on this team and then I got hurt. And then you acted like you did not know me? Yeah, it'd be a little bit salty about that, but those are in fact the breaks in the way this game goes, it look, if you're Mayfield you kind of get the last last year you were the number one overall pick in the draft?.
