Angels Ex-Staffer Sentenced to Prison in Death of Tyler Skaggs

"How many times have you sat down with a friend? Whatever, you make them at a party or you go to the house and they go, oh, my back, yeah, my back is out again, and I just can't, oh, I got a pill for you. Do you really? Yeah, I got something for you. You want to Vicodin? Oh, that would be great. Oh my God, thank you so much. We've all done that. Well, that'll put you in jail for 20 years. That's what's happening now. Now that makes you a murderer. Because a former media relations director for the Los Angeles angels was sentenced to 22 years in prison last week in connection with the overdose of the former pitcher Tyler skaggs who passed away back in 2019. And I know his death shocked the sports world, particularly when it was announced, 27 year old kid, chomped on his own vomit in a hotel room, and the angels had been scheduled to begin a series against the Texas rangers and the coroners eventually indicated that skaggs had a quote unquote toxic mix of alcohol fentanyl and oxycodone in his system and his death led to a change in the collective bargaining agreement between the MLB and the MLB Players Association under which the MLB PAO I can stand all these fucking I hate this bullshit. The bottom line is the guy wanted a pain pill. And somebody gave him a pain pill. And the person who gave him the pain pill is gonna go to jail for 22 years. I mean, tell me, guys, how many of us, how many of us have said, oh, I have something for you. Don't worry about it. I'll be I'll be at your house in an hour. Don't worry. I have Vicodin. I have leftover Vicodin prescription. I have a leftover percocet prescription. Don't worry. You can't do that anymore.

Your listening to Bloomberg business of sports from Bloomberg radio. This is the Bloomberg business of sports show we explored the big money issues in the world of sports on Michael Barr along with scarlet fu, and Damien SaaS sour. And Yankees president Randy Levine is dropping his knowledge on us about The Bronx bombers and baseball in general. Let's join more of our conversation. Randy, you know, I wonder if you could help me understand, you know, you've been involved in some of the biggest negotiations player negotiations contract negotiations imaginable. The New York Yankees, you've often referred to the economic benefit of playing for the Yankees as a major selling point during these negotiations, and I wonder if you can kick expand on that a bit. I mean, how do you quantify that benefit during the course of these negotiations? I mean, I know advertising opportunities sponsorship engagements and the like. But similarly, I mean, you've got this new found tax disadvantage for the state of New York out of the places like Florida. How do you deal with that when you're talking to players when you're trying to convince them to play for the angst? You know, I'm not going to get into anything regarding any specific negotiation or how it comes in doesn't come in. But when you have the most recognized most valuable most famous sports franchise, I believe in the world with a history that second to none in the city that's the media capital of the world in Mississippi capital of the world. I think it's pretty obvious when you play for the near Yankees everyone knows who you play for, who you are and it's just different. It's different. You're covered differently. You get opportunities that are different than people in other teams. It's just different. That's why the national networks take all of our games. That's why we're always front and center in everything. That's why people from all over the world come to stadium to see it. The cathedral of baseball. So at the end of the day, it's just different. And it's good and bad. I mean, there are certain players. You just saw it with Joey Gallo. It was a great player, a good guy. They just came handled in New York. Can't handle being a Yankee. You know, they just can't do it. The pressure, the attention, you know, two sides of the coin with all the benefits come all and all the recognition and everything. You guys work here. It's everything is magnified. Some people's personalities doesn't make them good or bad or whatever they just not built for it. So, you know, at the end of the day, you get a guy like Jose trevino who came to New York, catcher and he just arrived on it and now he's an all star catcher. So different people are different, but you don't have to sell the Yankees. The Yankees are the young. And New York is New York. That being the case Randy, who do you consider what team do consider your biggest competitor in attracting players retaining players? Who's the biggest rifle out there, not on the field, just in terms of being an employer? All 29. Oh, come on, narrow that down for us, please. No, baby, it's all 29 in our system. Once the player gets the free agency, every team has the opportunity to bid on them. Every team has the opportunity to do stuff and you've gone through the years and you've gotten great players. We'll go on to teams that are unexpected. I mean, whoever thought Carlos Correa would be with the Minnesota Twins this year. Nobody thought it could work for the Corey Seeger would be with the Texas Rangers. So the answer is everything. You know, Randy and your time as president of the Yankees, he founded both the yes network and legends hospitality. I wonder if you could talk to us a bit about the impact of sports gambling on Major League Baseball how that is changing the in game experience and how you see the New York Yankees organization adapting and evolving alongside this. Great question. And really taking the lead in a lot of ways in the whole mobile sports betting in New York. Pretty outspoken on it. I put a coalition together. We can't get a license. The Yankees, but we put a coalition together, which won a license. DraftKings, MGM and valleys, we have many sponsors over those pretty much sponsors. And New York State is doing phenomenal. There's a problem with it. The problem is that the volume is off the chart in New York, but the problem is they're being these companies are being taxed that like over a 60% rate. Those are all losing money. It makes no sense. Whatsoever. And after a while, when you lose money, you just don't go here. You can go right across the river, New Jersey, where I think it's like a 30% tax rate. So I've been arguing that, but it's completely transformed and will continue to transform baseball. In fact, I think baseball will be helped more than anyone. Why it's a great game to be interactive with when you're a fan. There's so many things to bet on. You can bet on with the score. You come back on. The battery and at home run, the triple double is even going to get a hit. What's the pitch fastball slider inning by inning score? I mean, there's countless ways you can do it. That's what fans want interaction. And some clubs and it's a state by state thing kind of sports betting actual kiosks on your property, not here in New York yet, but if it happens and I think it will happen in New York like elsewhere, I mean, you come to Yankee Stadium and you're on your phone betting. I mean, you're basically the stadiums of casino. Randy, the Yankees are a sports club. They're a media juggernaut really at this point. When you and your associates at the organization talk and look at other companies in the media business in the content business, what do you look at in terms of a good example of someone who's doing something well that you think, oh, we could bring that over to the Yankees to MLB. What company inspires you? I think we inspire ourselves. We look for best practices, but we look constantly what kind of content can we add that's a little different that brings yours. I mean, we're very proud, for example, we did deal with John boy, who is very, very cutting edge technology company with that really specializes in video getting into angles of the game and young fans, middle fans. They really middle aged fans love this. So we did a transaction where we brought them on to the S network where it can provide a lot of a lot of content. And then we have the ESF, which is doing phenomenal where we try and round out some of the coverage to bring new fans to warrant only sports fans. And this should obviously be the Yankees, the S has the Brooklyn Nets and New York City football club and we show Manchester City games one day or two after. The Yankees investment in this area 18 rate team may seem Milan, so we share those games. But if you're not a sports fan, we try them around that out. So we have programs on our app with trying to get more on the entertainment side. They're trying to bring new fans. For example, we have a show with a great chef Marcus samuelsson called home plate. Where we have

When Will Americans Realize the Government Isn't Working for Them?

"Going to realize that the government is not working for them. So at the border, what should we as citizens do when the federal government is feeling the system, Carol? Well, I've called for quite some time that the states need to organize a citizen force and to use police officers, use National Guard, use Texas Rangers or Arizona, rangers, and start their own border patrol. We could do this if we wanted to. We can police borders with police borders all the time. We've made a decision that our border is not worthy of policing. We made a decision that the potential benefits from open borders is better than the negatives that benefits, I guess are cheap labor, which is insane. I don't think there's any benefits. Let me be perfectly honest with unlimited legal and illegal immigration. But that's basically the consensus of the kind of cartel ruling class. And so we could do it. It's just a matter of the will. We don't want to do it. I always laugh when people

The Left's Lawless Immigration Policies

"So I want to talk about three small wins and I also want to talk about a very telling admission by Mallorca himself. So here's the first win and that is that the big uproar about all those Haitians who were descending on American shores. Obviously, these are not people at the southern border. They're showing up from Haiti. And they're showing up because the estes poverty in Haiti, but there's poverty in many parts of the world. Our immigration policies are not based upon your poor, therefore you have a right to come to America. So here were the Haitians and they were basically being seen on mosque coming across the southern border huge public relations scandal horrific images for Americans. Who are these people and even though the Biden administration tried to turn the tables? Look at these Texas Rangers rounding them up on horseback cowboy style. Nevertheless, the Biden people realized this is a very serious problem, and so they began to then deport the Haitians. Expelling thousands of them in sending them back home where they, of course, belonged. Victory number one. Here's victory number two the Biden administration as I mentioned on this podcast a couple of times was getting ready was on the verge of making gigantic financial settlements to families that said, oh, we were families who were separated at the border, even if the separations were brief, even if they were temporary. Oh, they were so traumatic. Why not use to this at all? This is emotional hardship and pain. We need to be paid $450,000 each. Not even for family. Per person. And the biodiversity was like, oh, yeah, you know, this song's reasonable. Yeah, yeah, I think giving family is taking taxpayer money and giving America Mexican families a $1 million here a $1 million there so they can basically go hit the Mexican casinos. They thought this was kind of a fair settlement. Well, once again, the public outrage over this. Made it impossible politically for them to go forward with this. And so they have ended those court negotiations over these financial compensation, victory number two. Victory number three is a court victory coming out of Texas and Texas. I have to say, has been the center of the resistance to Biden's immigration policies just a flurry of lawsuits filed by taxes really by attorney general, Ken Paxton, who's been on the show, and this is forced Biden to reimpose, even though not fully Trump's remain in Mexico policy. It's even forced Biden to continue some border wall construction, which is to say to close some gaps in the wall not to build new sections of the wall which they flatly refuse to do, but at least to patch up the wall in places where they were sort of gaping holes. Now, let me turn to the statement by orcas. We have fundamentally changed immigration enforcement in the interior for the first time ever our policy explicitly states that a non citizens unlawful presence in the United States will not by itself be a basis for the initiation of an enforcement action. Now this I think is really significant, you've got a top Biden official basically saying, it is our stated policy that we will not enforce the law. If you've got a guy in the United States illegal, you know, he's illegal. He admits he's illegal. But he doesn't have other violations. He's not a gang member. He doesn't have a criminal record. He's just an illegal. Not by itself, is not sufficient to initiate return or deportation proceedings. So what we have here is a truly lawless administration in the clinical sense of the term, there is a law system says if you don't like a law try to change it, they can change the law they're using the technique of quote enforcement to say, we're going to enforce it here, but not over there in effect what they're saying is we're going to at least in these important respects,

Border Crisis Sparks Calls for Change in Immigration Policy

"June twenty first two thousand nineteen jv pritzker signs measure to help protect illegal immigrants in illinois governor jv pritzker in june of two dozen nineteen signed three bills designed to protect illegal immigrants in illinois that would prohibit law enforcement agencies from coordinating with federal immigration authorities. Pritzker sign the keeping illinois families together. Act which prohibits local law enforcement from coordinating with immigration customs enforcement. Now this was two years ago. Why am i mentioning this. Because you have blue states by the way this is one of thirty examples of blue states that have been signing laws that prohibit police officers and local sheriffs in da's from coordinating with federal officials. That's an act of secession. That's an act of nullification saying we don't want any part of this. Federal compact and we as republicans and conservatives sat idly by like. Oh yeah that's bad. Let's keep going to the courts they've been ignoring the courts and ignoring the laws for years. And so then when one point eight million illegals come into the country to change the country permanently by the way what do we do. We beg joe biden for help. So what are the democrats do when things start to trend in a direction. They don't like they take action. The democrats have the willingness to reshape. Destroy the country. Republicans are getting there now. Some people emailed us and they said well. Charlie couldn't joe biden nationalize the national guard. It is very rare to do so usually only done with the consent of the governor and prayer pet presidents have rarely federalized a state or territory guard without the consent of the governor in the wake of hurricane katrina president. George w bush declined to take control of the louisiana's national guard due to the objection of governor kathleen blanco. But this is such an easy thing. First of all joe biden can't nationalize state troopers. Secondly he can't nationalize texas rangers. Thirdly the governor of texas would say i'm sorry what did you design a piece of paper. There's still our national guard. They're not gonna listen to you federalized nationalize i mean federalize. And so what should have been done. And what's still can be done. Is every single. If the Federal Government Won't Enforce the Law, the States Need to Enforce the Law

"People are saying well. Charlie federal the federal government is in charge of immigration. Law says all those states are able to assist in immigration regulation and enforcement it is the federal government that has the legal power to enforce. Us immigration laws. The us constitution includes a supremacy clause would prevent state laws interfere with immigration enforcement by the federal government. It is so interesting and frustrating that republicans fall for this nonsense. Let's just use a modern example. I'm going to read this again. The constitution includes a supremacy clause with prevents state laws from interfering with immigration enforcement by the federal government. You think that portland and seattle and san francisco and los angeles complied with that under donald trump when they said ice is not allowed in our cities when they declared themselves sanctuary states and sanctuary cities. You remember that remember. When city said we we're going to defy federal immigration law and republicans. Were just like oh yeah. that's okay. They're just a little nuts in seattle and portland. We're going to let them do it. So let me get this straight seattle and portland san francisco chicago new york and philadelphia and say we are not going to implement federal immigration law but texas can't mobilize twenty thousand texas rangers. National guardsmen to go arrest. People that are coming into their state illegally across the board. You see this is one of the problems with the republican party because the republican party is still living in the nineteen eighties. Two thousand one hundred sixteen games So anyway but he he was a he was a fixture for For the rangers another third baseman for this team. When he was with the rangers he was top ten. Mvp once you one Three four five six gold gloves. It's a gold. Love every time every year with them. Like i said he was a four-time all-star with the rangers and again it comes down to a team. That does not have a rich history of talent Pudge spent the most time with them and after that it gets be palmero. Who honestly for me. I think of the rangers and a believed the orioles but anything you know these guys who spent some time in texas but it wasn't their their entire career with them so having having those good years with the rangers really gets him on the mount. Rushmore for me and You gotta have somebody during during those years on. This team was good and the eighties was kind of that time for the rangers. So buddy bell is my third or sorry my fourth. Who's your fourth brig. You know it's gonna come controversial. And i know buddy bell was kind of difficult choices. Well right because you kind of had to decide like where do you go now. So mine's the same way. And i gotta but let me just clear the air. I okay before reveal who it is this doosan. Mvp five time all star three times silver slugger. He won the batting title but his career war is at twenty eight point two. It's a little low for what we would consider a mount rushmore. However this outfielder was a first round draft pick to the tampa bay devil. Rays we all know how first round draft picks go but do play with texas one. Two three four five six seasons after a two year stint in los angeles angels in anaheim. We're talking josh hamilton..

"Welcome back baseball family today. Brig and i are going to go through and we're going to present our nominations for the texas rangers. Mount rushmore Brig though before we get too far into this is going to present you with the history of the texas rangers and when the washington senators all right now to be brief. We've done this with all of them at rush. Moore's previously were going to kind of go through just a brief snapshot of the history. So this franchise. Texas rangers have been around for sixty one seasons nineteen sixty one to two thousand twenty one current that is present. I don't see the texas rangers going anywhere to you brad. No i wouldn't think so. Very good Let me stadium. So the so their record in that time period over the sixty one seasons four thousand five hundred twenty five games one. Excuse me up against four thousand nine hundred fifty four losses. That's a point. Four seventy seven win. Loss percentage if had eight playoff appearances one seasons two pennants zero count them zero world championships and they have retired six numbers of players all time. And i can go through those now. If you'd like brad go for it. Go for a brig. Well you know everybody's retired. Jackie robinson's number so forty. Two's on the list since then five. Additional names have been added. And we're talking. Nolan ryan number thirty four adrian. Bell trae number twenty nine. We've got johnny oates as a manager number twenty six michael young number ten and Yvonne pudge rodriguez as wearing number seven. Those are the retired numbers for the franchise very good. Thank you break now. This one of the things. I was i guess. Having hard time with this was as i always look all time. Top twenty four players right for these organizations considered like who who of these people. Would i consider to be the top ford on the on the mount rushmore and it was interesting because you have the top four and then number five is ian kinzler and my very first thought was. I can stop right there. Because i wouldn't consider him on putting him on. Anybody's not.

"Two thousand ten. The rangers have been adrian veltri in my opinion in agree. More may legitimately what. I was gonna say two time platinum glove. Four time silver slugger. Five time gold glove four-time all-star career war calculated at ninety three point. Five ninety three point five at a third baseman and a right hand at their basement at that so well. They're all right handed. Shut up. i said that and then had the same thought like why did you say that. And i don't know what happened. I should've just made it sound. Like i was now. What does that usually come on. Man career batting average was two eighty six. Not nothing to write home about there but also just solid solid. It's solid performance. I and i agree that for me. It comes down to. You cannot tell stories about texas rangers without adrian. Beltway doesn't happen and that's really and and it comes down to it too. He's the he's the third player on the list in the top twenty four players in rangers history with forty one point one war with the rangers. It goes pudge rafael palmeiro. And then adrian bell trae. Yep that's that's the top three right there. So in in franchise with as rough of a history have had with guys not sticking around not performing and just generally a franchise that hasn't been great over the years He was a definitely bright spot. For the franchise agreed. Brad why don't you go ahead and give you my fourth or you want to. I think this where we're going to diverge. Honestly i do too actually like looking looking at more. I think this is where it's going to be different I'll go ahead with mine. I'm gonna go with buddy bill. Whoa we do diverge very good. Okay there we go. Sorry for those who bet That's why we don't gamble. So so here's the thing adrian. Beltway spent eight years of his career with the texas rangers. As did buddy bell. These were however his peak years in the middle of his career He was a four-time all-star for the rangers He had a career war with the rangers of sorry. My window is loading thirty. Six point three he had a career batting average of two seventy nine two hundred one home runs fifty five career stolen bases. And for those of you who are curious. He's the father of david and mike bell who also played in the big leagues. I know david bell. Because he was the third baseman for the mariners. Two thousand one when they one hundred sixteen games Anyway but he he was a amuse hughes a fixture for for the rangers. He's another third baseman for this team. When he was with the rangers he he was top ten. Mvp once e- one Three four five. Six gold gloves. It's a gold glove every time every year with them Like i said. "I welcome back baseball family working and wrap up our texas ranger. Mount rushmore here and Two for two on the overlap brad. That's pretty remarkable I think this one. I'm gonna i'm gonna go sir blowing up as well. Let's see if we overlap again. You do this does to all right. I'm going with adrian. Beltway got him on my list. Yeah stakes getting higher. Police show. Call your friends. Make sure you know you you wager on this. If you're not betting on whether we overlap four for four i mean. Are you even listening to us the proper way. I don't know i wanna know. If you're not betting on this podcast were even doing with your life. So what are you do. There's gotta be at least twenty five cents right on this. At least if you're over and under doesn't come out to at least twenty five cents. I'm going to have a problem so the man's never bet on anything. Is life all right brad. Why don't you tell us why you picked. Adrian belts right. Okay so adrian belch So one thing for me for stop is the heyday like his best years of his career came in in texas. I feel like if you ask. Somebody who adrian bell played for the first thing they would tell you is texas average fan not a fan of the dodgers mariners or red sox they would tell you texas Because that's where we saw. That's where we saw him have the most success. He had four all-star years with the rangers. Sorry three with rangers wanted the with with the red sox and Having seen him playing seattle the way that he did a which was not great We refer to his time in seattle as the time. He forgot how to play baseball or forgot. How to hit is good defensively. he's very defensively third base for the mariners but he was not great offensively seattle as so many players are when they get are not when they get there He was he was good in. La is pretty good for the dodgers but he was not as good anywhere as he was with the rangers and Beyond that i mean. That's where we got to know the personality of adrian. Veltri right goofing off. Just silly guy. We saw him taking the when he'd hit home runs Like he would. He would swing on one knee when he runs a boston. Took that to texas He was goof around with elvis andrews. That was one of my favorite. Less is the in fill the round because they would like steel steel fly balls from each other they would make each other catch a fly ball so that was fun to watch is a lot of fun to watch so i loved. It loved his time in texas He was top ten in. Mvp voting three four times won. Four gold gloves regles loves in texas He carried the team into the national spotlight when they didn't necessarily deserve to be. We're not a great team overall. But he was a very good player and by. I mean like guess. Like i said top ten. Mvp voting very very good player. All-star couple times.

"Relief in that box dude. Well we just go home. Because i might actually die here. Nolan ryan does have his number retired with angels. Yeah and that to me to me that shows just how remarkably as we could probably do an entire episode talking about how much we love nolan ryan. We shouldn't right now. But the so he spent partial season nineteen sixty six with the mets. He went on to play with the mets for. You know three or four more years. Then he was with california angels for eight. then he's houston for nine and he finished with texas And he is as bread said chosen texas as his hall of fame cap on his plaque cooperstown. So pretty remarkable guy pretty remarkable performance. I don't think you can tell the story of baseball without nolan ryan. And if he played on that team it's really hard to say. You can't tell the story of the texas rangers without talking about nolan ryan texas boy hometown. The whole shebang love it. Absolutely i agree with you. Agree brig one or two lead us into our next one okay. I'm gonna go with another one that that is for me no brainer. It's probably gonna overlap with you. That pudge yvonne rodriguez. You can't tell the story. The rangers that pudge he played catcher. He's five nine two hundred five pounds this dude in the hall. Mvp fourteen time all-star number retired. He's from puerto rico. Here we go. This is what i'm talking about. Sixty eight point. Seven calculated war. He I'm gonna go. If this thing will turn around and go. He played most of his in texas. He had a stint in florida. Detroit and they franchised himself out for a little while just like everybody does at the end of their career specifically through eight ninety s and early two thousands but Most of his games in most of his successes are in texas. Yeah and he did. He got the world series with the with the florida. Marlins in two thousand and three He he was the catcher on that team on one of the things. That i think is interesting is that you know like you. Said he played the majority of his career in texas and then he went back to texas Nine and i think we all thought that that was just like a farewell tour. He played twenty eight games. But then it's like the nets in two thousand ten. Kim colonies like gal complete hundred. Eleven games for you. Apparently and i'm only thirty eight years old. It's fine as a catcher his entire career. His entire career was primarily catcher. Played a little bit of first base. The a little bit get second base probably just an appearance of detroit. Second basically fill. And i'm sure but nobody does that anymore. Nobody stays at catcher for that long as their primary position. We saw just mauer. Joe mauer go. Yeah when prime break predominantly to first base. I think some of that had to do with concussion. Some of it had to do with an ease but specifically bryce harper was drafted as a catcher out of the community college. He was playing for..

"About that for a minute. Twenty seven years in anything is remarkable. That's like marriages last that long. And that's it some some very few or in the military that long. But that's it though that's it here's i just looked this up. He so of the seven no hitters. Two of them came with the texas rangers so he was north of forty. He is throwing to those no hitters at least and so k. Here's another one for you. Real quick going to bring this back So the his last game Came september twenty second nineteen ninety three in the king dome against my seattle mariners give up two hits walked for gave up five runs and basically like i said i always arm fell off but as he walked to the dugout obviously upset disappointed to tell his career was basically over at that point. He got a standing ovation from the panza seattle. Yep so no he can cool. It's freaking cool. And he said. I felt it go pop and it was it. Just kinda was like hanging lamp and he had to he. He stood on the mound. You should see the video. The videos remarkably takes off his hat and he looks around. And that's when we all were like whoa. You know something is definitely going on here so a couple of statistics that i think are remarkable. His war is has been calculated. Eighty one point three eighty one point three wins above replacement for this starting pitcher. So that's remarkable his lifetime. Er as three point one nine with all those complete games and all those innings pitched better than anybody else like three point one over and thousand innings pitched and giving in his last appearance. He did not record now. gave up. Five earned runs that's essentially an infinite array for that game. Yeah which you know. One game in that mini is not going to have that big of a weight but still he had two of those. It's going to. It could be significant. It's right so that's over. The course of eight hundred seven games that he pitched in. And what i think is he's it hall of famer. Eight time all star part of the nineteen. Sixty-nine world series championship his numbers retired in. I believe texas and in anaheim for. I'm not mistaken but he's he also three saves to his name. Oh three saves as a starting pitcher. now. I don't know how that happens. Other than got pulled in midway through probably a playoff game scenario and that's some winner take all type dude jobs. You imagine same reason exactly. And that's what i was gonna say. Can you imagine saying. Do you know what we need. You come in to this out and make sure and i know you pitched yesterday or the day before but we have got to have you right now and then..

"Totally worthwhile happen. Do do your. Who's she. We just give the first one out of the way we could do that. Yeah nolan ryan. Yeah nolan ryan. Yeah we and this is. This is my thing. So i put nolan right on my on my list of very. I talked my list. I feel like he's a super debt. But then but then brig. I went back as looking at his his career in his numbers and everything and i had the realization that he literally only played and i. I shouldn't say that. He only played for the rangers for the last five seasons of his career yet. Nineteen eighty nine through nineteen ninety-three use only an all star one time however you did bring this to my attention that he did go into the hall of fame as a texas ranger which i thought was very interesting Now he did lead the league in strikeouts Twice those first two seasons with the rangers at a three hundred three hundred one and two hundred thirty two strikeouts As far as his career goes he's still leads. Major league baseball with a the most walks allowed two thousand seven hundred. Ninety five is a lot allah he also has the most strikeouts five hundred five thousand seven hundred fourteen which is crazy What that leads me to believe. The guys are just too afraid to be in the box against him to even swing the frequent bat. Well and let's be honest. If there were robot umpires how many of those would convert back over to one of the other categories. Yeah it's true. I'm just saying like i would like to see exactly how many backwards case he has. Because i really do think the guys are just box. They didn't know what to do. They didn't know like he do. They're gonna hit me or he's going to strike now either way. Not an iranian woman does walk me. That's fine he's a adage. Don't wanna be here either way. I wish i was just about anywhere else. Pretty much ended the fact that he picked up so many innings so he did pitch a total of five thousand three hundred eighty six innings over the course of his career. There are a lot of complete gains in there a lot. A lot of his there were two hundred and twenty two over. The course of his career is heyday with the angels. You know he was pitching Hit three years. Our he threw twenty plus twenty twenty six and twenty six complete games in a season now. So that's where guys are just not getting a chance to like not what their pants. The batter's box. There's no there's no relief. Maybe that's where the term relief came from like. Oh please let me face. Someone other than ryan and the batter's are visibly relieved. And that's where relief pitchers come from. Maybe not so much. The pitcher as it is the banner might be right. I might be crazy to. But i probably the lunatic. You've been looking for exact. But here's the other thing too is over. The course of his career nolan ryan threw seven no hitters. That's a lot for those who don't know. I don't have a whole lot of context you but that's a lot especially i mean even over the course of a what Twenty seven year career. The that twenty-seven stop there. And just.

"This is the thing it's crazy to me is tops. The official baseball card of major league. Baseball for seventy years. So that means. I mean i'm thirty five right now they were. They were the official baseball for thirty five years. Before i was born i was like my gosh since double double my life. Literally and then now fanatics comes in and they're going to be the new official trading card of major league baseball for another seventy years. I think so and and you know fanatics started out as like one of those lids type stores like like kind of a small online store like leads us to be and and then they just grew in the got to be the official merchandiser of professional sports plural. General right correct now. They're getting They've pretty much monopolizing professional sports. Yeah they are and don't know that's a good or a bad thing. Trading cards are a big deal suddenly. Yes always called that about a year ago. He did carry. He said he said it was going to happen because he said it was going to or if he just saw coming but well he has so much influence that it's possible that is both. Let's be super. That could be. I happen to have some trading cards. Here brad growl excellent. i went out. I went out and sought long and hard. And i'm i'm talking long and hard to find frigging baseball cards. Because apparently somebody pulled a gun in wisconsin and Was you know fighting a baseball cards at a target in wisconsin to me. That's that's taking it too far much. Because i'm just like you know. What is the big deal. And let's see what i ended up with now some of you. I understand of feel this a sacrilege. Because i have run into a number of people already who found out that i got my hands on some cars. And they're like don't you open that. Like what do you mean. don't open it. So apparently the cold. Her has shifted. Since i was in a baseball cards in my youth and now i'm an hour here. We don't even know they don't even open. The pack apparent will not apparently knowing it. Okay so this is a two thousand twenty one diamond kings baseball card set. There are twenty cards in his box. okay. The box was abnormally large for the size of the cards. One of the last time that i bought baseball cards when i was younger. I thought this box is actually a box of cards. Were boxes a little more expensive. Might have been like five bucks off. Sweet is gonna be awesome cards. I open it up. There was four cards in the box and me being about ten eleven years old. I did not think to look at the quantity. I was looking at quality There were four cards in the box. Thinking probably gonna get at least fifteen twenty. It's very disappointing. But okay rig anything good. Why are the Angels not? Why can't they be better? I mean, they have that history of paying a lot of money to get those stars there And then when the stars arrive there trash, But as soon as they leave, then they have a resurgence in their career. It's a wild thing. Some people say it's an angels hex, or, uh, You know some voodoo going on down there, But that's it's a real thing. They like to pay a lot of money for stars who, while they're underperform, and then when they leave, they do better. But I mean, the Otani kid is obviously doing his thing. We're not going to run our picture out there in the batting line up every you know every day or the opposite. Purists will go. They freak out when they see now that they see this. Will that will there be more? I think more guys like that. Maybe you could Jason, but not to this degree. I mean, that dude is something like special on top of special. But, yeah, you know, Brooks was probably the best pitcher hitter that maybe Texas has ever had. Dennis Cook at it to Dennis Cook with great picture hitter too, right? Cookie was. Did I say? He said he doesn't take batting practice? Yeah. Otani, listen that he ripped that off when I say that to you. Yeah. Long old Coach Dick here Long been my opinion that when it comes to softball, practicing is cheating, okay? Kind of goes for golf as well. But I've been practicing a little bit lately. Practicing it. She got some whiffle balls in the backyard. Also, if you play with a zero B A C that's also cheating. Okay? Yeah, that's you Got you got you got to have some jet fuel and let's get some beers in you, man. Get some jet fuel. All right here. Let's move the golf and my guys been on hold on. Zack for new Broncos is on Calle BJ. What's exactly Hey, not much. I I think I would agree to. I also don't care about the baseball thing. I think I tuned out that entire segment hold for. Thanks Exactly. I'll put you right back on hold. I'll have you now. As as I was calling. When you were talking about the UFC thing, not really having any stars. I was wondering what you guys think I kind of feel like golf is sort of getting that way because we had Tiger Woods. It was the superstar forever, and I feel like we haven't really had, like one person that's like the guy. In a while. I mean, we kind of thought speech was going to do it A few years ago, I was like maybe kept to But like looking at the last three years, there hasn't been a single repeat person win a major. Yeah, I think Ed's going to tell you that that is not true that there's a bunch of rising stars in the game. But it's a good point. Zach, you know, because Jon Rahm is on the cusp. He could. He could win this week in sandwich at Royal ST George's, because he almost won the Scottish Open yesterday. He's right there a budding superstar to be, I think, Bitos Man, Rice and the shambo. Is a superstar, so I think there are superstars they've been trying read like with Rory or with Jordan, right? They just they find the hiccups where they might go off course there for a couple of years, But definitely since Tiger they've been yearning for one. I don't know what the problem is just having that great like upper echelon of of players and having it be more competitive. Just show you have to have someone ahead. I think holders above no, I think it's good for the game in term for people, you know, It's it's super golf fans like And and sort of casual golf fans like us. Yeah, it is good, but when that when Tiger was doing it like he's on Good Morning America, all right. He's on the bananas in Fresco morning show for people who don't care about God. He's on their radar, and there are no golfers right now who are like There's no golfers that do what Tiger did, which is a track non golfers to see him play on Sunday on TV because he's such a He was such a huge personality. Huge person. Yeah, Bryson do Shambo. That guy got any friends? I am so far out on him. I don't know what happened. What'd you do to you now? I don't know. Like I was. I was all about it when he was, you know, just pounding protein shakes and driving the ball a million miles. Then I watched him on the match. What? Everything. And now? Hey, dude. Now he's just saying he's got a new caddy. And he and his old of a guy or fine. I'm like you're never going to talk to that guy again. Yeah, he said today that yoga is business were bad. It's needs have been bad. Well that well, why didn't you say that last weekend or the rocket in Detroit? That Yeah. He's got bad knees. He wants to quit for a while. You didn't say that you had to an assistant pro from Dallas National in Dallas. And you got your friend, your swing coach. And, yeah, Yeah. You guys know who my favorite golfer is? Vinny Del Negro. Former Spur? Yes, sir. Golf champion beat John Smaltz in a playoff. Yesterday. I tell you what, for a guy who finished his baseball career is a closer had an awful time closing out that golf tournament yesterday. Oh, you're killing me there today. That was it. Yeah. Sorry. Exactly. Yeah, well, it was this like a Peter Pan golf. What is that stable, You know, American century American century Century championship. Edwin Tahoe and I need you to get me on their real You can. I can get you on there because I think any Tom Dick or Harry can walk up there and play. John Smaltz, uh, was leading the whole day and then collapsed. The last two holds many Del Negro made a birdie on 18. They go to the first playoff all where John Smaltz. It's a tree and it's a tree again and hits it in the water. It's over. And my guy Vinny Del Negro again former spur Now he did play for, like half the teams in the league. I don't know if the Spurs claim him. Uh, he's He's the first ever basketball player to win the celebrity tournament. Oh, is this what, like Charles Barkley was in that we talked about Barkley Bet on himself. How's your guy? Do the one that you have a tattoo on your back? Tony Tony Romo played well finished in third. I needed to make a couple putts didn't do it. Annika Sorenstam fourth I think that's the thing. She's a She's a Hall of Famer. No, she's you're saying she shouldn't be allowed in? No, she should She should woman and she she should not have played because he's a pro. But it was fun because she's a fine golfer enjoy watching her play Barkley but about $100,000 on himself at 5 to 1 odds that he'd finish in the top 70..

"Proud of this team obviously hated losing losing. I'm proud of my team. The plan is different than the regular season game seven. He's he's getting all you gotta give everything. Today wasn't the result we wanted but we'll come back material. That was the difference in the series. Though i mean you look at the mavericks team it's luka doncic and a bunch of you know bench players outside of kristaps porzingis. Who was supposed to be your number two. Talk about kawhi. Leonard for the clippers and luca. Dodge look at outplayed. Why leonard for most forty seven points or whatever. It was yesterday as far as his average to this series. No question but that's because he had to kawhi. Leonard the clippers dominated. When you go outside the superstars just completely outplayed them out. In finnish smith was the second leading score for the mavericks yesterday with eighteen. And that hasn't been the norm but then this series wasn't The norm and in carlisle will spend the season going to hell. Why couldn't we win. This game win a game at home right especially when they were the first home. Game of the year with the pandemic makes the difference in being a higher seed. Then you have home court advantage and they didn't have that but it is what it is. Now you're you're too young to remember. Well you can go back to twenty eleven. That was the last remember the last time we had something to root about in this town. Because i'm not too young. i'm too old to remember. When are we going to have another championship team. That i can talk about in this down. The i haven't had one since twenty eleven. Yeah that's true. The cowboys have come close. They've got a couple years they haven't though the dads catchier five okay. Well i'm telling arrangers but they're never wanted. I'm not saying they have one. But i'm saying there have been years where you're like. This is the year and then dez doesn't catch the ball when he catches the ball. And then aaron rodgers makes a ridiculous play on the sideline and when dax rookie little plays here and there that derailed potentially championship teams. Just telling you. I'm not getting any younger and eventually i'd like to talk about a championship team again. The mavs need to retool everything before right now. I'm not sure who has the best shot at getting there. What's the mouths. Is it the cowboy fans right now yelling at you know. It's the cowboys cowboys will win this year. Don't get me started on junior shaking your head. I am one of them. So i understand them. Don't get me started on cowboys stars. No well i don't know. They played in the stanley cup. Final last and even number year next year. so maybe they do like the thing Well it's sad what what's sad is now. I don't have anything to talk about until cowboys camp in july and at least we were the rangers team. Now look at the time. Steve don't have time to talk about how bad the rangers are five fifty six now. Thanks steve steve lamb. Here's traffic bill jackson..

How Covid Will Affect Sports This Fall

"One of the things that's on everybody's mind is the travel outlook for this fall. And really what we're talking about. We could be facing as soon as the olympics but all the way in to the fall football season so we're going to get a little expertise on that in the in the form of matt trout. Who joins us from. Sports travel magazine. You could check out a great article. He's got out there on sports magazine dot com talking about the latest sports at cove. Nineteen and really what everybody's trying to do. When it comes to opening stadiums to full capacity and matt. This is an interesting conversation and appreciate your joining the show. Sarah and i on. Spain and fitz have talked a lot about the olympics and some of the challenges. They're facing now is even japan. They're they're not sure that the olympics are safe so as you look at what every single league is trying to do to put forth the effort to put fans in stands. How confident are you at this. Point that we're gonna face what feels like a normal fall. I'm fairly confident. I think An thanks jason. Of course obviously for beyond. But i am fairly confident that we're going to be seen full stadiums In college football pro football all the pro spa sports by the fall. Especially you know you look at major league baseball. And and opening day Obviously the attention on texas rangers having a capacity crowd but everybody did have some restricted level of capacity. And you look at it now. And there's gonna be i think it's close to twenty teams by the fourth of july. That will be having their standing there. Stadium open at one hundred percent capacity. And i think when you go into the fall of the olympics obviously is a totally different animal because of the situation in japan. But i really believe that in this in college football season whether you're watching an sec. Game or pat close game or a group of five game that you're going to be seeing Stands that there might be one or two sections that are socially distanced but for the most part. I think you're gonna see everybody back to what it was. Almost in in in many ways a pre pandemic. Oh set up
